Google may be working on cheaper versions of its Pixel 3 phones, the Google Pixel 3a and the Google Pixel 3a XL, 9to5Google reported Monday, citing a source familiar with the phones.

There have been previous rumors about the new Pixels, with an alleged launch date in the spring, but now we’re also getting details on some of the phones’ specifications. Exact pricing has not been revealed, but per 9to5Google, the new phones may be “a couple hundred dollars cheaper.” (Currently the Pixel 3 is on sale for $600 at the Google Store.)

According to the new report, the Pixel 3a will have a 5.6-inch OLED display with a 2,220×1,080 pixel resolution. It will be powered by a Snapdragon 670 chip, and come with 4GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel wide-angle selfie camera, and a 3,000mAh battery.

The Pixel 3a XL will likely have a 6-inch display; there’s no word on the chip or the camera.

Both phones are said to have USB-C connectors, 64GB of storage, Active Edge squeeze sensors on the sides, a Titan M security chip, and 18W fast charging. And both phones will come in either white or black (the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are also available in pink).

If the reports are true, the new Pixels might be a way to get all of Google’s software goodies that are exclusive to Pixel phones without spending a ton of money.

It’s unclear when the phones will hit the market, but 9to5Google says it seems like the launch is “imminent.”

Here is the day Google’s Inbox is going to die

Going to that big App Store in the sky.

Anyone who logged into Google’s Inbox app on Tuesday was greeted by a notification telling them to just download regular Gmail already. It also warned users that Inbox will not be available after April 2.

The move was first announced back in September, but Google apparently felt the need to reiterate that Inbox will die soon to anyone still using the app.

SEE ALSO: Review: The Helm personal email server puts you in control of your data

Though the two apps are functionally similar, Inbox and the regular Gmail app served different audiences. Inbox leaned heavily into productivity-minded users by giving people some handy ways to clean up their messy inboxes and never spend too much time drafting a response. It was the birthplace of the auto-generated Gmail reply, for those who would rather say “Thanks!” by pressing a button than typing it out.

That was one of the Inbox features that eventually made it over to the default app, but not all of them did. For example, Inbox also allowed users to sort similar messages into “bundles,” something that hasn’t been fully replicated in Gmail just yet.

The app was originally launched in 2014 on an invite-only basis, but became available to the public later. It can still be downloaded and used for now, but it’s probably inadvisable to fall in love with Inbox just two weeks before its destruction.

As you might expect, the death of Inbox has made some people pretty unhappy. An online petition to stop Google from shutting down Inbox was created late last year and actually got a boost in signatures on Tuesday morning after the death notification went out. At the time of writing, it was about 500 signatures away from its goal of 10,000.

Inbox fans took to Twitter to mourn the outgoing app and vent their frustration.

UN calls for aid as displaced from Cyclone Idai may reach 2m

Geneva, Switzerland – At least half a million Mozambicans have been displaced by cyclone Idai, but that figure may rise to four times that in the aftermath of the devastation, United Nations officials warned on Tuesday.

The World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and other UN agencies launched an appeal for immediate international funding and logistical support to save hundreds of thousands who remain isolated and with no access to food or clean water in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi

In Mozambique, the government’s estimates put the number of those affected by the cyclone at 600,000 in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zambézia, Inhambane and Tete.

A WFP staff member, who flew over the area inundated since the weekend when two swollen rivers burst their banks, spoke of “inland oceans extending for miles and miles in all directions”.

The situation is particularly dire in the port city of Beira, where thousands are still on rooftops and in trees waiting to be rescued, as the flood reached a height of six metres, UN officials said.

“A lot is needed, the world doesn’t realise the scale of the problem especially in Mozambique, where some 1.7 million people were on the path of the cyclone,” said Herve Verhoosel, WFP spokesperson.

Some 920,000 people were affected in Malawi with some 82,000 being displaced, but UN officials said the impact was limited and people were returning to their homes on Tuesday, as further assessments were under way.

Cyclone Idai death toll at 215, Beira city ’90 percent destroyed’

In Zimbabwe, some 15,000 people have been displaced, with Chimanimani and Chipinge being the hardest-hit districts.

“People visible from the air may be the lucky ones, and the top priority now is to rescue as many as possible and ferry them to safety,” said Lola Castro, WFP Regional Director for Southern Africa.

Addressing reporters in Geneva, Castro said assessing the extent of the damage and needs is a huge challenge given the poor weather conditions, the limited access to the areas hit by the cyclone and the complete power and telecommunications blackouts.

Castro said the UN has suggested that the Government of Mozambique ask South Africa to help create an air bridge in order to reach the most isolated areas, where people have lost everything. UNICEF launched an appeal on Tuesday for $20.3m to support the response in the three countries.

Airlifts started

The WFP said an MI-8 transport helicopter had started airlifts on Tuesday, with two more aircraft scheduled to arrive before the end of the week. On Tuesday WFP airlifts dropped high-energy biscuits, water and blankets to people crammed on rooftops and elevated patches of land outside Beira.

Negotiations by the WFP to bring to Beira two freight aircraft, including a Hercules C-130, are at an advanced stage, Verhoosel said.

While the agency’s warehouse in Beira was badly damaged by the cyclone, some food remained intact. From that stock, WFP staff who were in the city prior to the cyclone, continued to provide easy-to-prepare fortified food to thousands displaced who found shelter in 18 schools and churches in the area.

Heavy rains to continue

Heavy rainfall is projected to continue in Sofala and Manica provinces from 19 to 21 March. With heavy rain continuing and forecast to persist for days, concern is growing about further flooding as rising water makes its way down Mozambique’s main river systems.

Alerts have been issued regarding the risk of flooding in the Buzi, Pungoe and Save river basins in the next 72 hours, which could lead to further destruction and potential loss of life. The Buzi river has already burst its banks killing hundreds.

Firefox will now automatically block those annoying autoplaying videos

Image: leon neal/AFP/Getty Images

2018%252f06%252f26%252fc2%252f20182f062f252f5a2fphoto.d9abc.b1c04.jpg%252f90x90By Matt Binder

Execute Firefox 66.

Mozilla just dropped the latest version of its popular Firefox web browser and it could make your internet experience way less annoying.

Its hot new feature: automatically blocking autoplaying video with sound. Videos that autoplay on mute by default won’t be affected by Firefox’s block, so it’s clear that Mozilla is focusing on specific types of videos that go out of their way to annoy users. Videos that autoplay after you finish watching a previous video, like on YouTube or Netflix, also won’t be affected by the block.

While Google’s Chrome browser has had a similar feature for about a year now, Firefox’s solution seems more thorough. By default, Chrome doesn’t block every site that autoplays videos like Firefox does. It’s also a lot easier for users to quickly whitelist a website with videos they don’t want to block with Firefox.

The latest version of Firefox also puts an end to another scourge of the web: websites that jump around thanks to slow loading images and advertisements. Firefox 66 introduces a scroll anchoring feature which basically locks where you are on a webpage in place. This way the page doesn’t automatically scroll down while you’re reading an article because an annoying banner ad just loaded at the top of a website.

Another feature added to Firefox with this update is a new search box which allows users to scan through all of their open tabs.

Firefox 66 also delivers other search improvements, updated security warnings, support for Windows Hello on Windows 10, as well as finally adding basic support for the MacOS touch bar.

Firefox users can download the update here.

Man returns to his car to find a koala chilling in air-conditioned comfort

Air conditioning is a gift — one that belongs to humans and koalas alike.

Tim Whitrow, an Australian winemaker, was recently visiting a vineyard and left his car door open with teh air conditioning on to help keep his dog cool in the heat. When he returned to the vehicle he found a Koala chilling in the back seat.

It took a little bit for Whitrow to finally get the koala to leave.

“As I was moving to another part of the vineyard I noticed that someone else was also in the car enjoying the A/C. It took a fair bit of convincing to get the feisty little fella out,” Whitrow wrote on Facebook.

Why anyone would want a koala out of their car and not in their arms, to be held forever, is beyond me. My fantasy pet combination is a dog and a koala. Imagine coming home to not one but two furry things.

Though it’s true that koalas don’t like to cuddle, and human encounters often stress the creatures out. But maybe this koala was different? Or perhaps it really was just really hot and wanted to cool off. (With their thick fur, koalas are known to overheat in hot temperatures and occasionally even pass out.)

Either way, congratulations to Whitrow on this brief encounter with a magical creature.

Dreamy ‘Lucy in the Sky’ trailer starring Natalie Portman: Watch

Few humans have ever faced the vastness of outer space and then had to literally come back down to Earth after. In Lucy In The Sky, Natalie Portman plays an astronaut who struggles immensely upon returning to her home planet after glimpsing the “vast celestial everything” that lies beyond it.

“I just feel a little off,” she narrates in the trailer. “You go up there and you see the whole universe, and everything here looks so small.”

Directed by Legion‘s Noah Hawley, Lucy teases sci-fi and surrealism as Lucy grapples with her mundane reality (it’s loosely based on real-life astronaut Lisa Nowak, who was arrested after returning from missions on Discovery and the International Space Station).

She finds comfort in fellow astronaut Mark (Jon Hamm) when her husband Drew (Dan Stevens) can’t relate to what they experienced. The film also stars Zazie Beetz, Pearl Amanda Dickson, and Ellen Burstyn.

Lucy In The Sky will premiere in 2019.

Video: Watch UFC President Dana White Announce New 7-Year Contract

UFC President Dana White has signed a new seven-year contract to extend his tenure at the company.

White spoke to Megan Olivi in an interview for the UFC’s YouTube channel, and he announced he had signed a new deal to run concurrently with ESPN’s new partnership with the MMA promotion:

Per ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, White said: “Ari Emanuel and I just signed a new seven-year deal, too. So we’re here for seven years. ESPN is here for seven years, and the incredible things that we’re going to work on, I just can’t even tell you how pumped I am for all this stuff.”

Emanuel is the co-CEO of Endeavor, the company that holds the majority stake in the UFC and with whom White signed the deal.

White also believes the exclusive ESPN partnership is good news for UFC fans:

UFC @ufc

“It’s incredible for the fans.” @MeganOlivi sits down with @DanaWhite to discuss the @ESPN extension, exclusive PPV rights on ESPN+, McGregor’s return, Khabib, Diaz and more.

Full interview: https://t.co/qfmnkQlcwj https://t.co/4p9IC8TAAe

MMA Fighting’s Shaheen Al-Shatti supplied further details on the implications of the deal:

Shaheen Al-Shatti @shaunalshatti

Two notes on the deal from the press release just send out by ESPN.

– New ESPN+ subscribers will get one-year of ESPN+ and a UFC PPV event for $79.99.

– Existing ESPN+ subscribers will be able to purchase UFC PPV events for $59.99 per event.

The 49-year-old has been in charge of the UFC since 2001, when his school friends, Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, bought it.

Under White, it has gone from “the verge of bankruptcy” to a “multi-billion dollar enterprise,” that has seen “fights in 175 countries, over 100 UFC training facilities worldwide and a television presence that has reached over a billion households,” as ForbesDanny Boice wrote in 2014.

As Rothstein noted, White’s expansion of the company into the mainstream, which included the introduction of female fighters in 2012, helped make household names out of the likes of Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey.

UFC was bought by Endeavor in 2016, but White remained at the helm. He added:

“After the sale I stayed on and we’ve been working hard for the last two-and-a-half years to take this thing to the next level. That’s why I’m here. I didn’t stay here. It’s not about money. It’s not about any of that stuff.

“I don’t care about any of that stuff. I like to win and I like to take this thing to the next level, the next level, the next level, and it’s what we’ve always done and what we’ll continue to do.”

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev announces resignation

Nursultan Nazarbayev has led Kazakhstan since before its independence in 1989 [File: Benoit Tessier/Reuters]

Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev has resigned from his position after 29 years in power.

“I have decided to end my duties as president,” Nazarbayev said in a televised address on Tuesday without giving a reason for the decision.

“This year I will have held the highest post for 30 years. The people gave me the opportunity to be the first president of an independent Kazakhstan,” he said.

As per the country’s constitution, Kassym-Jomart Toqaev, the speaker of the country’s upper parliament chamber will hold presidential authority for now, Nazarbayev said.

Nazabayev said he will continue as leader of the ruling Nur Otan party and will remain as chairman of the presidential Security Council, which could allow him to retain key powers.

The news came hours after Nazarbayev’s office said it would make an important announcement.

Nazarbayev, 78, has led Kazakhstan since 1989, when it was still part of the Soviet Union. He came to power as the Central Asian country’s Communist Party chief and was then elected president.

In 2015, he was elected for another five-year term, reportedly taking nearly 98 percent of the vote.

According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, there has been speculation that Nazarbayev might step down as president but continue to hold power in another capacity.

The group reported in February that Nazarbayev had sought clarification from Kazakhstan’s Constitutional Council on an article dealing with the termination of presidential duties, prompting concerns that Nazarbayev was seeking to maintain his grip on power if he stepped down as president.

Rights groups have accused Nazarbayev of suppressing dissent, prolonging his time in office and using political means to subdue political opponents.
