DRC vote: Opposition says ruling party win would be ‘provocation’

Kinshasa, DRC – Vote counting has started in the Democratic Republic of Congo‘s long-delayed election as the opposition claimed it will not accept a ruling party victory.

“I cannot see how Mr Shadary (the ruling party’s candidate) can win. I doubt anyone will have the courage to proclaim Shadary as the winner. It will be a provocation,” Martin Fayulu, leader of the opposition Lamuka coalition, told Al Jazeera on Monday.

Sunday’s vote, which has been repeatedly postponed since 2016, was marked by long delays with many polling stations not opening and voters not finding their names on the poll register.

The electoral commission (CENI) on Wednesday said at least 20 percent of the polling stations in the capital, Kinshasa, would not open because of a lack of voting machines.

More than 46 million Congolese registered to take part in the election to pick a successor to President Joseph Kabila, who has ruled the mineral-rich country for 17 years.

As many as 21 candidates contested the poll.

Early this month, a blaze destroyed the commission’s main warehouse in Kinshasa. CENI said the fire destroyed 80 percent of the voting machines allocated for the capital, which is home to about 15 percent of the country’s electorate.

“It was deliberately disorganised. The people of the Congo are asking the truth. They are asking for their act (vote) to be reflected in the result. The result should reflect what they did on Sunday,” Fayulu added.

‘Badly organised’

Voting did not take place in three opposition strongholds, where at least 1.2 million people registered to vote.

CENI, earlier this week, said it was delaying voting in the eastern cities of Beni and Butembo in North Kivu until March next year, because of the ongoing Ebola outbreak which has claimed more than 330 lives.

CENI also said voting will take place in March next year in Yumbi in the western Bandundu province because of ethnic violence. More than 100 people have been killed in the area since the start of the month.

Crispin Landa, a political analyst, told Al Jazeera the postponement could lead to unrest.

“I think Sunday’s elections were the worst in terms of organisation and preparation comparatively to all elections this country has held so far, including those held during Joseph Mobutu,” Landa said.

“It’s in the opposition’s stronghold that complications have been observed. It was badly organised and could lead to chaos,” Landa added.

Fiston Kamanda, an adviser to Ramazan Shadary, told Al Jazeera the opposition should wait for official results to be announced and accept the outcome.

“Fayulu does not have a chance to win an election. He doesn’t represent anything. He might win in Kinshasa, but not anywhere else. We are confident we will win. If he is not happy with the results when it is announced, he can go to court,” Kamanda said.

Provisional results are expected on January 6, while the official results of the presidential polls are due to be announced on January 15.

Voters are also electing representatives for the national and local assemblies.

Meanwhile, the internet was heavily restricted in Kinshasa on Monday shortly after the vote tallying started. Residents in the eastern city of Goma also told Al Jazeera they were experiencing internet restrictions.

Al Jazeera contacted both internet service providers and the government and is awaiting comment.

DRC, a mineral-rich country of 80 million people in central Africa home to more than 60 percent of the world’s cobalt, has never had a peaceful transfer of power since it gained independence from Belgium in 1960.

The best goalkeepers in Europe: Alisson beats everyone, in Serie A Handanovic on top

31 December at 13:10

The role of the goalkeeper is crucial, especially when his performance helps not to concede goals and to seal the defensive side. Below we report the ranking of the goalkeepers who have obtained the highest number of clean sheets.

With 12 inviolate nets in 20 games and only 8 goals conceded, it is Alisson Becker, Liverpool’s goalkeeper, the number one of the five main leagues in Europe.

The second place is occupied by Samir Handanovic, author of a great season with Inter. The number 1 of Nerazzurri, with 10 clean sheets out of 19 games played, is the best goalkeeper of Serie A. He only conceded 14 goals.

The third step of the podium goes to the new Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Blues took him in the summer of 2018 from Atletico Bilbao for 80 million pounds. The 1994 class player obtained 9 clean sheets in 20 games, conceding 16 goals.

14 of the biggest royal family moments from 2018

What a year it’s been for the royal family!

While 2018 has been a mean old year for us mere mortals, those whose blood runs blue have had a festive year with not one but two weddings and some pretty major announcements.

Now that the year is coming to an end, it’s time to look back at the most memorable royal family moments from 2018.

1. *The* wedding

Two different royals may have tied the knot in 2018, but the first wedding of the year was also the most spectacular.

The whole world (or at least 29 million people, per Nielsen figures) watched Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle tie the knot in St George’s Chapel on May 19th. Not only was the ceremony quite the showstopper, the guest list was out. of. this. world. In attendance was the Queen of England *AND* the Queen of the Universe, Oprah.

Come on, just look at the two of them.

Awwwww

Awwwww

The entire ceremony was just one moving scene after another.

Like when Prince Charles walked Meghan Markle down the aisle, as her own father could not attend.

Serena Williams was also there. NBD.

2. The baby announcement

Five mere months after their wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex) rocked our world once more.

On Oct. 15 Kensington Palace made the announcement that the Duchess is expecting a baby in the spring of next year.

3. Prince Charles turned 70 and revealed his favourite dish

On November 14th Prince Charles celebrated his 70th birthday and we all learned a new word; “groussaka”. In a birthday interview with Country Life, His Royal Highness revealed that he prefers the classic Greek dish moussaka with grouse, not lamb, giving us the groussaka. Thanks for sharing, your highness.

Clarence House also released some lovely family photos in celebration of the Prince’s big day.

4. Prince Louis was born

Prince William and Kate Middleton (the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) welcomed their third child, Louis Arthur Charles in April.

The name Louis was perceived to be a nod to Lord Louis Mountbatten, a well-loved relative of the royal family who was killed in an IRA attack in 1979.

A lot of people people thought Kate Middleton paid tribute to Princess Diana when she introduced Louis to the world. The Duchess wore a red dress with a white collar, much like the red and white outfit worn by Diana when she left the hospital after giving birth to her second son, Harry.

5. Meghan Markle released a cookbook

One of Meghan Markle’s first solo projects as a Duchess was the charity cookbook Together: Our Community Cookbook. The Duchess came up with the idea of the cookbook after a visit to the Hubb Community Kitchen, a community kitchen that helped feed survivors in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower disaster in 2017.

The proceeds from the cookbook, the foreword of which is penned by the Duchess herself, all go to the Hubb Community Kitchen, to help keep it open.

6. Princess Eugenie got married

Prince Harry was not the only young royal who got married this year.

His cousin, Princess Eugenie, tied the knot with wine merchant Jack Brooksbank in October. Their wedding, also in St. George’s Chapel, was quite the star-studded affair with Kate Moss, Liv Tyler, Demi Moore, and Naomi Campbell in attendance, to name a few.

When Cara Delevingne showed up to the ceremony in a suit and top hat, she pretty much stole the show.

7. Princess Charlotte started school

Three-year-old Princess Charlotte started school and we’re mostly including this because of how unbelievably darling she is in this photo.

8. Meghan Markle bonded with the Queen

Everyone knows that hanging out one-on-one with your in-laws can be a tad strenuous, but Meghan Markle sure makes it look easy.

The Duchess had her first solo outing with Queen Elizabeth in June, when the two attended the opening of the Mersey Gateway bridge in Cheshire.

Even though looking at a bridge all day might not sound all that interesting to a lot of people, these two managed to make it look like a hoot.

9. The first same-sex wedding in the Royal Family’s history

Lord Ivar Mountbatten, the Queen’s third cousin, made history when he married his partner, James Coyle, in September. Mountbatten is the first member of the royal family to be openly gay and marry a same-sex partner.

The wedding was held privately, but Mountbatten shared a photo of the two on Instagram.

10. The Queen met President Trump

Brits weren’t too fussed when U.S. President Donald Trump visited the UK in July. Neither was the Queen when the president reportedly showed up 15 minutes late to their meeting.

Donald Trump denied being late, and actually claimed that the pair got along brilliantly.

11. Harry and Meghan’s first royal tour

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first royal tour overseas was a trip to Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand (in fact, they made their aforementioned pregnancy announcement right as they landed in Sydney.)

During their trip they experienced a lot of local culture and also served up so. much. cuteness.

12. Prince William spoke his mind about social media

Let’s face it; it’s the tech bros’ world and we’re all just living in it. Well, Prince William will not accept that.

The Duke of Cambridge spoke candidly at an event at the BBC about how Big Tech and social media companies have failed to live up to the responsibilities that come with their immense power.

“Their self-image is so grounded in their positive power for good that they seem unable to engage in constructive discussion about the social problems they are creating,” the Prince said as he urged social media companies to “reject the false choice of profits over values.”

13. Kate Middleton received the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II

One of Kate Middleton’s most-talked about looks this year was at a Buckingham Palace state dinner, where the Duchess of Cambridge wore a tiara formerly worn by Princess Diana along with  what is probably the most beautiful 19th century pearl and diamond necklace you’ll ever see.

But, noticeably, the Duchess also wore a brand new order; the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II, given to members of the Royal Family for their service (that’s the yellow ribbon with the Queen’s face, in case there was any doubt.)

14. Prince Harry and Megan Markle released a never-before-seen photo from their wedding

As the year drew to an end, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex got one more moment in the spotlight as they released an unseen photo from their wedding reception.

The photo, which is featured on the couple’s official 2018 Christmas card, is a black and white shot of the couple watching fireworks while holding hands.

What’s more romantic than that?

Thanks for all the memories, your royal highnesses. May 2019 be as full of glitz, glamour and royal grandeur.

Harry Kane vs. Alan Shearer: comparative career paths

[–]andy_brixton[S] 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of strikers, careers and goal-scoring, Alan Shearer’s PL record is far superior to any other player, it has to be H’s (club level) target . I wanted to take a look at how they compare at the same age, and as their careers progressed.

(A quick mention though for Serge Aguero who is scoring at an almost identical rate to H but, at five years his senior, will run out of time (he came to the PL at aged 23 and is now 30)).

The Premier League’s top scorers : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Premier_League_players_with_100_or_more_goals

For the purpose of comparison, it’s helpful that H was born in July and Shearer in August. From that we can conveniently ascribe a full season to a respective age. For example for the 2018/19 season, H will be 25 years old (Shearer will be 48!).

Points of interest: we can see that H has made fewer appearances but has scored more goals; that translates into a career goal/game ratio of 0.59 for Shearer and a current ratio of 0.7 for H: more goal s in fewer games for H.

We can also see that Shearer had an 18-year career at the top level (18-years old to 36). In contrast, H had a handful of starts aged 20 and flew out the traps aged 21 – that might be partly a reflection of the more urgent nature of the PL as compared with the old First Division.

Just to say, I’ve doe this strictly out of curiosity as an amateur!

Things to note from this chart:

I’ve extrapolated this seasons total for H; currently he is on 20 / 13 (Appearances / Goals) and for the purpose of this graph I’ve assumed season totals of 34 / 26.

The Premier League started in 92/93, after Shearer began playing at the topmost level. I have included his record from before the PL (5 seasons in the then First Division).

We can see that Shearer was pretty well injury-free until aged 27 – in that season both appearances and goals were rare.

Quite the opposite. British Twitter is generally a glorious place filled with puns, sarcasm, and the kind of amusing day-to-day observations capable of bringing surprising levels of joy — and 2018 was no exception.

Russia detains American in Moscow over suspected spying

Russia's relations with the US have soured since Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 [Alexander Zemlianichenko/AP]
Russia’s relations with the US have soured since Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 [Alexander Zemlianichenko/AP]

Russia‘s domestic security service (FSB) has said it had detained an American citizen suspected of spying in Moscow.

The FSB, which said the American had been detained on December 28, said in a statement on Monday that a criminal case had been opened against him.

The statement identified the American in Russian, using a name that appeared to translate as Paul Whelan.

It did not provide any detail about the nature of the alleged espionage.

The US Embassy in Moscow could not immediately be reached for comment.

The arrest came with Russia embroiled in a number of spy scandals with the West, from the alleged poisoning by Russian agents of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England, to the US conviction of Russian Maria Butina for acting as an illegal foreign agent.

Russia’s relations with the United States have soured since Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

Since then the United States and other Western countries have imposed a wide-range of sanctions against Russian officials, companies and banks.

Paul Pogba Supports Kalidou Koulibaly with Anti-Racism Wristband

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba wore an anti-racism wristband in support of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly on Sunday against Bournemouth.

Pogba donned the band during the 4-1 triumph, and he said afterwards it was with the centre-back in mind. Koulibaly was the victim of racist abuse during the Partenopei’s match against Inter Milan on Boxing Day, per Sky Sports.

“Well done guys, beautiful way to end the year and an honour handband for Kalidou Koulibaly. In 2019 say NO to racism,” he said on Instagram.

The wristband was black and white, with “NO” written on it.

As Sky Sports relayed, Inter have been ordered to play their next two home matches behind closed doors following the incident. Koulibaly was subjected to monkey chants by some in the stadium.

Inter boss Luciano Spalletti condemned the actions of some Inter supporters.

“Racist chanting should not be taking place,” he said, per Dejan Kalinic of Goal. “If 65,000 people come and watch the match on Christmas, they want to see something else. This is the football that Italians and the people around the world want to enjoy.”

Numerous figures in football have supported Koulibaly, including Napoli and Argentina legend Diego Maradona:

Ahead of their clash at the San Paolo with Bologna on Saturday, the Napoli fans also showed their backing for their star defender by wearing masks of the Senegalese and holding up placards with Koulibaly’s face on:

The Napoli players also warmed up for the game by wearing the 27-year-old’s No. 26 jersey in another display of solidarity.

Pogba’s gesture came in a 4-1 win for Manchester United, with the Red Devils coasting past Bournemouth. The Frenchman was the star man on the day, as he scored two goals and set up another. It was the second game in succession in which Pogba has netted a brace.

The former Juventus man has said in the past he was the victim of racist abuse in Serie A. In 2013 he accused Torino striker Riccardo Meggiorini of using a racially motivated insult, per Neil McLeman of the Daily Mirror.

In March this year, Pogba and his France team-mate Ousmane Dembele were also allegedly subjected to monkey chants when his side played against Russia in an international friendly, per Jamie Smith of Goal.

Lindsey Graham: Trump ‘slowing’ US pullout from Syria

President Donald Trump has ordered a slowdown to the withdrawal of United States troops from Syria, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has said.

“I think we’re in a pause situation,” the South Carolina Republican said outside the White House on Sunday.

On December 19, Trump announced the withdrawal of all the roughly 2,000 troops from war-torn Syria, with aides expecting it to take place swiftly.

Graham had been an outspoken critic of Trump’s decision, which had drawn bipartisan criticism.

He had warned that removing the troops would hurt national security by allowing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS or Daesh) to resurge, betraying US-backed Kurdish fighters of the YPG armed group battling remnants ISIL, and enhancing Iran’s ability to threaten Israel.

The president had declared victory over ISIL in Syria, though pockets of fighting remain.

Since announcing the withdrawal, two senior government officials resigned, Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and US envoy to forces fighting ISIL, Brett McGurk.

Critics had contended that the US withdrawal would embolden Iran and Russia, which have supported the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

National Security Adviser John Bolton was expected to travel to Israel and Turkey next week to discuss the president’s plans with the American allies.

During his appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union”, Graham previewed his arguments to Trump for reconsidering the Syria pullout.

“I’m going to ask him to sit down with his generals and reconsider how to do this. Slow this down. Make sure that we get it right. Make sure ISIS never comes back,” Graham said.

What about the Kurds?

The announcement of the Syria withdrawal had shocked legislators and American allies, including Kurds who have fought alongside the US against ISIL and face an expected assault by Turkey.

“I think we’re slowing things down in a smart way,” Graham said, adding that Trump was very aware of the plight of the Kurds.

“And, at the end of the day, if we leave the Kurds and abandon them and they get slaughtered, who’s going to help you in the future?” he told CNN. “I want to fight the war in the enemy’s backyard, not ours. That’s why we need a forward-deployed force in Iraq and Syria and Afghanistan for a while to come.”

Trump’s trip to Iraq last week was an eye-opener according to Graham and he understood the need to “finish the job” with ISIL.

“I think the president has come up with a plan with his generals that makes sense to me,” Graham said.

Graham said later on Twitter that Trump would make sure that any withdrawal from Syria “will be done in a fashion to ensure: 1) ISIS is permanently destroyed 2) Iran doesn’t fill in the back end, and 3) our Kurdish allies are protected.”

The President will make sure any withdrawal from Syria will be done in a fashion to ensure:

1) ISIS is permanently destroyed.

2) Iran doesn’t fill in the back end, and

3) our Kurdish allies are protected.
