Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki Named Special Additions to 2019 NBA All-Star Game

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade and Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki have been named as special roster additions for the 2019 NBA All-Star Game, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times

“Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade embody the best of the NBA: remarkable skill, drive and professionalism as well as a deep devotion to strengthening their communities and growing the game around the world,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.  “As a global celebration of basketball, our All-Star Game is an ideal setting to salute these first-class NBA champions and Finals MVPs.”

The 2019 NBA All-Star Game will be held on Feb. 17 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It marks Wade’s 13th All-Star selection and his first since 2016. Nowitzki is now headed to his 14th All-Star Game, his first since 2015.

While neither star has performed at an All-Star-caliber level this season, it’s an honor that is fitting for two legends who are nearing the end of their respective careers.

Wade considered hanging up his sneakers last offseason but decided to return for a 16th NBA season, which he deemed “one last dance”:

Having accepted a bench role for his farewell tour, the 37-year-old is averaging 13.8 points and 4.3 assists in 25.4 minutes per game this season.

Wade still managed to find himself in contention for a starting spot throughout the voting process despite posting modest, albeit respectable, numbers this season.

Although he appreciated the love the fans were showing him during his final season, he acknowledged last month, per Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, that he didn’t feel as though as had earned a spot on the roster:

“If I’m choosing an All-Star, I’m not picking me. It’s not an indictment on anything, but guys that deserve to be All-Stars will be All-Stars.

“For the first time, I actually agree with [TNT analyst] Charles Barkley and what he said. It’s a lot of guys that get their first chance to be All-Stars, and if they deserve it, then they deserve it and they should have those spots. I appreciate the love from my fans to even vote me, to have as many votes as they did. But from an All-Star standpoint, there’s multiple guys that deserve to be in there and I hope they get their opportunity.”

Wade was not voted in as a starter nor was he among the reserves announced on Thursday night. However, he will still be heading to Charlotte.

Meanwhile, Nowitzki is averaging just 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.3 minutes per game in 20 appearances this season.

He missed the start of the season due to ankle surgery in April 2018 and did not debut until Dec. 13.

Nowitzki has been non-committal about his future. The 40-year-old is in his 21st NBA season, becoming the first player in league history to spend 21 years with one franchise.

While the full roster has been announced, the teams for the 2019 All-Star Game will be determined by a draft, with the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo serving as captains. The first round of the draft will have the captains select from the pool of starters, and the second round will feature the reserves. Per the NBA, Wade and Nowitzki will be a part of a special third round.

Of note, James—who spent four and a half seasons as Wade’s teammate with the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers—will hold the first pick in the third round.

The 2019 NBA All-Star Game draft will air on Feb. 7 on TNT at 7 p.m. ET.

ICC orders conditional release of Ivory Coast’s Gbagbo

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered the conditional release of former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo after he was cleared of charges of crimes against humanity last month.

Judges agreed on Friday to release the 73-year-old former strongman and his aide Charles Ble Goude on condition that they live in an as-yet-unspecified country pending an appeal by the prosecution.

Gbagbo and Ble Goude stood trial on four counts of crimes against humanity for murder, rape, persecution and other inhumane acts committed by pro-Gbagbo forces in the aftermath of the disputed 2010 polls.

Gbago has been in ICC custody since 2011, Ble Goude since 2014.

Appeals judge Chile Eboe-Osuji said the court would release them “to a state willing to accept them on its territory and willing to enforce the conditions set” by the court.

Ivory Coast is an ICC member state, but the court may be unwilling to send Gbagbo to his homeland, given that it has refused to surrender Gbagbo’s wife Simone despite an outstanding ICC warrant for her arrest.

Gbagbo had been kept in detention pending objections by prosecutors, who plan to appeal the acquittal and sought guarantees that the men would return to court later if required.

Lawyers previously cited the arrangement reached with former Democratic Republic of the Congo vice president and rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba, who went to Belgium after he was cleared by the ICC last year.

Bemba was acquitted on appeal for crimes allegedly committed by his militia in the Central African Republic in 2002-2003.

Bemba was later convicted of tampering with witnesses but did not have to return to serve time in jail because of previous time served.

The court ordered officials to make “appropriate interim arrangements” to find somewhere for Gbagbo to stay until a final agreement is made with whichever country hosts him.

Thousands killed

The first former head of state to stand trial in The Hague, Gbagbo was found not guilty on January 15 for the 2010 wave of violence.

More than 3,000 people died on both sides after Gbagbo refused to concede defeat to his internationally backed-rival, Alassane Ouattara, who is Ivory Coast’s current president.

The ICC was set up in 2002 for trials relating to war crimes and crimes against humanity. So far, most of its cases have involved African countries.

Previous ICC attempts to try top politicians for crimes committed by subordinates or followers have all run into serious difficulties.

In 2014, the ICC’s chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, dropped crimes against humanity charges against Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

If the Boston Celtics are thinking about trading for Anthony Davis, they may not be able to count on him being a long-term asset.

Per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Davis would view the Celtics as a “rental option” since they aren’t his “preferred” long-term destination.

This ‘Fyre Fest 2019’ parody ad is way too real

By Chloe Bryan

The Fyre Fest jokes just keep rollin’ in.

A parody video popped up on YouTube Thursday advertising “Fyre Festival 2019,” which costs $20,000 and takes place in prison. Billy will be there, of course, because he is in prison.

The infamous orange square, which you probably remember from the Fyre Fest documentaries on both Netflix and Hulu, also plays a big part here. Coincidentally, it is also the color of a prison jumpsuit.

See you there!

Either the Knicks Are Getting KD or They Just Made the Worst Trade Ever

New York Knicks' Kristaps Porzingis (6) waves to fans before an NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks Tuesday, March 13, 2018, in New York. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)

Frank Franklin II/Associated Press

NEW YORK — What the Knicks did Thursday afternoon was so shocking, so extraordinary, so extreme, that any explanation must begin with two extreme possibilities:

• The Knicks have taken the dark art of tampering to unprecedented levels and are absolutely certain that at least one superstar (possibly two) is signing with them in July.

Or:

• The Knicks have just taken the greatest leap of faith in franchise history, risking the careers of everyone working at Madison Square Garden if the gambit fails.

There are less radical ways to interpret the stunning trade that sent Kristaps Porzingisthe Knicks’ fabulously talented young 7-footer—to Dallas. But since executives across the NBA responded with either profound suspicion or profound disbelief, let’s start with the extremes.

It’s not just that the Knicks gave up on a 23-year-old All-Star, one so unique he’s been nicknamed “the Unicorn.” It’s that they effectively used that young star as inducement to get the Mavericks to absorb their two worst contractsthat of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee. In essence, the Unicorn just became bait in a massive salary dump.

And that’s what had rival general managers gagging on their afternoon lattes.

“It’s never happened,” one veteran exec said. “Teams have given up unprotected picks. But no one’s ever traded an established star, an established commodity, just to clear money.”

There are other elements to the deal. The Knicks got Dennis Smith Jr., a second-year guard with a mixed reputation; two future first-round picks whose value is hard to gauge; and two veterans whose time in New York will likely be brief, DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews.

But the biggest benefit by far is the $75 million in cap roomenough to sign two max-level free agents this summer when a bonanza of superstars, led by Kevin Durant, will hit the market.

Could this be a vision of the Knicks' future or another dream that will go unrealized in New York?

Could this be a vision of the Knicks’ future or another dream that will go unrealized in New York?Andrew D. Bernstein/Getty Images

So, Durant and Kyrie Irving? Kawhi Leonard? Kemba Walker? Jimmy Butler?

Cue the suspicion and conspiracy theories.

“The only reason you can justify doing it,” the same exec said of dumping Porzingis, “is you have some level of certainty in your own mind that you’re getting KD and Kyrie, or KD and whatever.”

Others were more blunt. “It means they’re pretty sure they’re getting KD,” said a rival exec who believes the Knicks have already been told Durant is coming.

This is today’s NBAruled by paranoia, plotting and back-channel negotiations.

Long before the Porzingis trade, word of a tacit agreement between the Knicks and Durant was circulating through the league. That Durant’s agent, the Manhattan-based Rich Kleiman, has openly gushed about his Knicks fandom (and his aspirations to run the team) only added life to the narrative.

At Madison Square Garden, there is no shortage of people who believe the same.

It is, of course, illegal for any such agreement to existor even for discussions to occur while a player is still under contract with another team. But it happens.

Does Thursday’s bold salary dump indeed mean the Knicks have Durant in the bag? We won’t know until July. A lot can change in five months.

Which brings us to the risk. And there’s a lot of it.

What if the Knicks whiff on Durant, just as they whiffed on LeBron James in 2010? What if Irving stays in Boston, Walker stays in Charlotte, Butler stays in Philadelphia and Leonard lands in Los Angeles (with the Clippers)?

Then what?

What if the Knicks land just one star? Even that’s a dicey outcome, given how little proven talent they have. Rookie Kevin Knox has shown only flashes so far. Mitchell Robinson is a project. Smith, although an elite athlete, fell out of favor in Dallas after just one season because of his poor decision-making and ball dominance.

Having not experienced a winning season since his arrival in New York, Kristaps Porzingis lost faith in the Knicks' ability to turn the organization around.

Porzingis has his flawsand is still recovering from a torn left ACL he suffered 12 months agobut he was by far the Knicks’ best player and their best trade asset. He was absolutely beloved by fans.

But Porzingis had grown disillusioned with all the losing and roster churn and the gnawing sense that the franchise didn’t properly value him. He was also on his fourth head coach and second team president in four years. He’d been privately stewing for some time.

It hardly came as a shock Thursday when Porzingis suggested a trade (not requested, per sources), just months before entering restricted free agency.

The Knicks didn’t have to grant it. They had the right to match any deal Porzingis signed this summer. They could have waited out the storm, found other avenues to clear cap room, locked up Porzingis for five years and used him as the draw for star free agents.

But now? Now the Knicks have no All-Star to attract the others.

“Perplexing,” one veteran GM said. “Shortsighted.”

The Knicks also just lost some credibility. It was just a few months ago that team president Steve Mills publicly asserted that the Knicksafter years of foolish short-term fixes, impulse buys and leaps for every shiny objectwould take a methodical path forward. Build through the draft. Develop their youth.

“We’re committed to following the plan and not just shifting, pivoting, because we see something that is attractive and might fast-track something,” Mills said in September. “I’ve seen that happen and go wrong too many times. That’s not what we’re doing.”

On Thursday, Mills jettisoned the Knicks’ brightest prospect in 30 yearsfor the mere possibility of chasing shiny objects in July.

“If they strike out, they will all be fired,” a rival scout said. “Crazy risk, but I kind of like it.”

Worth noting: That cap-clogging contract of Hardaway’s (four years, $71 million) was given to him by Mills, in his first act after taking the reins from Phil Jackson in 2017. Lee’s contract (four years, $48 million) came under Jackson, but Mills was the GM.

Also worth noting: The Knicks could have drafted Smith in 2017, but the Jackson/Mills front office chose Frank Ntilikina, just days before Jackson was fired.

After passing on Dennis Smith Jr. in the 2017 draft, the Knicks added him this week, albeit at what could be a hefty cost.

The Knicks effectively sacrificed Porzingis on the altar of their own mistakes.

In the near term, the Knicks might also have damaged their chances of landing the No. 1 pick in June. Jordan and Matthewsassuming the Knicks don’t release or trade themare sturdy veterans who will help win games, thus hurting the team’s lottery odds. Both will be free agents this summer, so their stays are likely to be short in any case.

The upside? It’s possible Smith polishes his rough edges and becomes an effective lead guard. But scouts are generally skeptical, citing his wonky jumper and shoot-first mentality. The Mavericks had been looking to dump him for weeks.

The two draft picks could be valuable. One of them, a 2021 first-rounder, reportedly is unprotected. But if Porzingis clicks well with rookie sensation Luka Doncic, Dallas could quickly become a playoff team, dropping the pick into the low teens or 20s. A 2023 pick (protected 1-10) is too far off to even think about.

The deal was made so quickly that most teams had no idea Porzingis was even available, which means they had no opportunity to make the Knicks a better offer.

“They absolutely did not do due diligence,” one source said.

Still, one team executive suggested the Knicks might win the deal, though it depends on multiple variableshow Smith and the picks work out and, of course, whether any stars take that cap room.

It’s a massive gamble. Unless, of course, the Knicks already know how this play ends.

US suspends compliance with INF treaty, may withdraw in 6 months

The United States is suspending its compliance with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia on Saturday and will withdraw from the landmark 1987 arms control accord in six months if Moscow does not end its alleged violation of the pact, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday.

Pompeo said the administration will provide formal notice to Russia that the US is withdrawing from the INF in six months and, if Moscow doesn’t come into compliance, the treaty “will terminate”.

President Donald Trump said in a statement that “for too long” Russia has violated the treaty “with impunity, covertly developing and fielding a prohibited missile system that poses a direct threat to our allies and troops abroad”.

An American withdrawal from pact has been expected for months and follows repeated accusations by Washington that Moscow is violating the treaty – a charge the Kremlin denies.

The treaty, signed in 1987 by then-President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, banned an entire class of weapons: ground-launched cruise missiles with a range between 500 and 5,000km.

Such weapons were seen as particularly dangerous since they take only a few minutes to reach their targets, leaving little time for political leaders to ponder a response and raising the threat of a nuclear war in case of a false attack warning.

US officials have also expressed concerns that China, which is not party to the treaty, is gaining a significant military advantage in Asia by deploying large numbers of missiles with ranges beyond the treaty’s limit.

‘Unwilling to hold substantial talks’

NATO said that if Moscow failed to destroy all new missile systems that Washington insists violate the treaty, “Russia will bear sole responsibility for the end of the treaty.”

Trump said his administration “will move forward with developing our own military response options and will work with NATO and our other allies and partners to deny Russia any military advantage from its unlawful conduct.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters earlier on Friday that he was expecting to receive official notification in the coming days. He accused Washington of being “unwilling to hold any substantial talks” with Moscow to save the treaty.

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from Moscow, said one of the major problems with a US withdrawal is that there is no alternative in place.

“There have been various critics, across the spectrum, saying the INF treaty was out of date because it was something the US and Soviet Union had agreed to, but countries such as China hadn’t. They were allowed to forge ahead with missile development as they wished,” he said.

“The problem is that right now, there is no replacement … and there doesn’t seem to be any work in progress to develop one.”

In a tweet on Thursday, chief Spokeswoman for NATO Oana Lungescu, said there are no signs of getting a compliance deal with Russia.

“So we must prepare for a world without the Treaty,” she wrote.

Technically, a US withdrawal would take effect six months after this week’s notification, leaving a small window for saving the treaty. In talks this week in Beijing, the US and Russia reported no breakthrough in their dispute, leaving little reason to think either side would change its stance on whether a Russian cruise missile violates the pact.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted by the Russian state news agency Tass as saying after the Beijing talks on Thursday, “Unfortunately, there is no progress. The position of the American side is very tough and like an ultimatum.”

Ryabkov added that Moscow remains ready to “search for solutions” that could keep the treaty in force.

A US withdrawal raises the prospect of further deterioration in US-Russian relations, which are arguably at the lowest point in decades, and debate among US allies in Europe over whether Russia’s alleged violations warrant a countermeasure such as the deployment of an equivalent American missile in Europe.

The US has no nuclear-capable missiles based in Europe; the last of that type and range were withdrawn in line with the INF treaty.

‘Unleash new missile competition’

The prospect of US withdrawal from the INF pact has stirred concern globally.

Following the US announcement, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted that Russia is not prepared to restore confidernce in the INF treaty.

“There will be less security without the treaty,” he said.

Nuclear weapons experts at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said in a statement this week that while Russia’s alleged violation of the INF treaty was a serious problem, US withdrawal under current circumstances would be counterproductive.

“Leaving the INF treaty will unleash a new missile competition between the United States and Russia,” they said.

Laura Rockwood, executive director at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, called the treaty “extraordinarily successful” and said it “needed saving”.

“It would be best to keep the INF in place,” she told Al Jazeera. “You don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. It’s been an extraordinarily successful arms control treaty. There have been concerns over competition by China but perhaps the best way of addressing that is instead of scrapping the INF altogether, you try to engage China either on a trilateral basis or on a separate bilateral basis.”

Ariana Grande And 2 Chainz Connect And Squash Any Ill Feelings On ‘7 Rings’ Remix

Getty Images

By Trey Alston

Ariana Grande’s trap-infused, Thank U, Next single “7 Rings” came with a visual centered around an iconic pink house. 2 Chainz noted the similarities to his own Pink Trap House promotion and Grande’s video, sparking rumors that the situation created bad blood between them.

Grande ended all speculation with the release of the official remix of “7 Rings,” featuring Chainz himself. The rapper adds a snarky, telling verse to the original. Listen to the remix below.

2 Chainz’s funny barking is displayed in full force on Grande’s single. Among his typical barrage of jaunts, jest, and similes, there’s one line that seems to acknowledge his influence on the “7 Rings” music video: “My ideas are priceless / I know I’m the nicest,” he raps.

2 Chainz released his fourth studio album, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, in 2017 and opened up a pink house in Atlanta known as the “Trap House” as a promotional attraction. Since its opening, the house has offered free HIV testing, Halloween attractions, and a number of other community services and activities.

Grande’s upcoming album Thank U, Next drops on February 8. The song “7 Rings” was responsible for Grande’s recent tattoo snafu when she had Japanese kanji characters for “small BBQ grill” etched on her skin instead of the song’s title. But don’t worry — it’s since been fixed.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shines bright in ‘Knock Down the House’

“In the beginning, the fundamental question is, ‘Why you? Why do you think you can do this?’” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez notes in Knock Down the House. There are, as the documentary has already pointed out, a million reasons why she’s not the obvious choice for New York’s 14th Congressional District.

In the end, though, the answer she gives is the only one that matters: “Because no one else would.”

SEE ALSO: Why Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dropped into a ‘Donkey Kong 64’ session on Twitch

It’s a line that inspires cheers and fist-pumps, the perfect motto for an up-and-comer positioned as the David to incumbent Joe Crowley’s Goliath. What makes Knock Down the House so compelling, though, is that it digs beyond the pretty soundbites and packaged-for-TV narratives to show us not just who and what is happening in American politics right now, but how and why.

Given Ocasio-Cortez’s meteoric rise from New York City bartender to DC superstar, it’s no surprise that Knock Down the House focuses most heavily on her. But she’s only one of four subjects. The others are Cori Bush from Missouri’s 1st District, which includes the place where Michael Brown was killed; Amy Vilela from Nevada’s 4th Congressional District, whose daughter died after being denied care over an insurance issue; and Paula Jean Swearengin, a Senate candidate in West Virginia who wants to take on the coal industry.

All four are contextualized here as part of a broader movement to bring fresh faces – women, people of color, and others who don’t fit the usual mold – into American government, aided by organizations like Justice Democrats and Brand New Congress.

Those who follow politics closely may not find a ton of new information here. For the rest of us, however, it’s a chance to consider just how entrenched the establishment is, and what the cost is of that status quo.

Director Rachel Lears is blessed with compelling subjects (these are, after all, people charismatic enough to convince thousands to vote for them), and she’s also got an eye for little moments that feel like entire stories on their own – like the epic side-eye Ocasio-Cortez gives to sum up her feelings about Crowley’s campaign brochure.

In another funny, cringe-y scene, Crowely self-consciously rolls up his sleeves during a debate that isn’t going his way, presumably to signal that he’s ready to get to work for his constituents.

“I get scared of the cynicism that could result from people really believing in something and it not happening.”

Knock Down the House makes no bones about where it stands with these candidates and their positions. Parts of the film even seem like they could double as campaign videos, they’re so sympathetic and flattering to these politicians. But it’s preferable to mealy-mouthed both-sides-ism, and in any case the goal here isn’t really to get you to vote for these people. The elections they’re working toward have already come and gone.

It’s to encourage citizens to take a good, hard look at our current political system, and ask ourselves what we stand to gain by shaking it up. The attitude it takes toward these women’s rivals isn’t so much anger as it is frustration, as when Bush notes that, sure, Lacy Clay may have seniority in Congress, but “does it count for us?” Is he using that power to serve his people? Or is it time to replace him with someone who will?

As positively as Knock Down the House frames its core subjects, it’s clear-eyed about the difficulties these women face in their runs for office – not least of which is an existing political machine designed to keep them out. At one point, Steven Horsford, Vilela’s competition, gets a cushy donation from Crowley, because, an advisor notes, “If Amy wins against an establishment Democrat, things start to look more hopeful for a scrappy woman from the Bronx.”

Even once these candidates start to gain traction, the fear of losing looms large: “I get scared of the cynicism that could result from people really believing in something and it not happening,” Ocasio-Cortez admits.

In Ocasio-Cortez’s case, of course, that fear proved unfounded. Knock Down the House‘s most moving moments come at the end, as the results come in for New York, and Ocasio-Cortez thrills in her unexpected victory. No doubt you’ll have seen some of that footage in news reports already, but it packs a fresh emotional punch after 70-odd minutes of following her on the campaign trail.

For others, the ending isn’t so happy. Even there, though, the lasting sentiment is one of empowerment, rather than cynicism. These people may have lost their elections. But doesn’t it say something that such ordinary folk could even get this far? Perhaps the time really has never been riper to, in the words of Swearengin, “raise some hell, and take our lives back.”

Leaked Samsung video shows foldable phone and other futuristic gadgets

If this new video leak is really showing the Galaxy F, then Samsung has gone a long way from the prototype you see in this photo.

The mother of all Samsung leaks just hit the internet in form of an official teaser video for upcoming devices. The video, uploaded by Samsung Vietnam according to XDA Developers, shows a foldable phone, a bezel-less, notch-less phone, and a new tablet — among other gadgets.

But upon closer inspection, it’s possible that the video isn’t all that new, and that it’s merely showing concept devices, which will probably be quite a bit different from the actual phones Samsung is launching on Feb. 20.

The original video was quickly removed but it was re-uploaded by SlashLeaks; check it out below.

SEE ALSO: Samsung’s Galaxy S10 will probably be very expensive

First, the good stuff. The video and the devices it shows are very cool. The foldable phone, making an appearance at 0:24 in the video, seems to have a foldable inner screen and another screen on the outside, tiny bezels and a very thin form factor. It looks like a better, sleeker version of the prototype Samsung had shown in November, which is pretty much what we’d expect the company to launch.

Many more cool gadgets are featured in the video. The super-thin, near-bezel-less tablet at 0:18 is dreamy, and the gaming phone at 0:37 appears to be all screen, without bezels or notches.

But when you see the gigantic three-screened personal tailor (0:10) and the robotic tattooing arm (0:20), you’ll realize that this video is all about concept devices — stuff that Samsung engineers may be dreaming up somewhere, but also stuff that’s likely not launching anytime soon.

Furthermore, the phones we do recognize in the video are older Samsung models, the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9. If this was the official announcement video for Samsung’s foldable phone, it would likely feature the new S10 devices as well.

So yes: The video is definitely interesting, and it does offer a glimpse into Samsung’s potential future products, but does it really show the Galaxy F? We’ll find out in three weeks.

Nicki Minaj Is The Queen Of Darkness In Chaotic New ‘Hard White’ Video

YouTube/Young Money/Cash Money

By Trey Alston

One of Nicki Minaj’s longtime strengths has been her willingness to get crazy. Her name is practically synonymous with theatricality. On Friday (February 1), she released a demonic new visual for “Hard White” that shows how much she goes the extra mile with her work. It reaffirms her queen status in the realm of the living, although it’s shot in the realm of the dead.

The visual is made up a mix of dark magical scenery and twisted backdrops. Nicki appears as a witchy figure, wearing a mix of costumes that look both majestic and increasingly terrifying. There’s one scene that looks to be a futuristic throne room where she operates in full control. In others, there are naked, painted people moving demonically. Its title may be “Hard White,” and while white historically has symbolized purity, this lavish, sinister video represents anything but.

In the midst of the frantic movements and simmering flames, Nicki raps about her twisted rule of rap’s domain. “Mirror, mirror, who’s the fairest? / You the motherfucking fairest, Nicki,” she raps, repeating a line delivered by the Evil Queen of the classic film Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. That bar alone really sells the idea of the song, that a hard-nosed dominating woman emcee is perched upon her throne.

“Hard White” comes from Nicki’s 2018 album, Queen. It’s the fifth single following “Chun-Li,” “Bed,” “Barbie Dreams,” and “Majesty.” She’s getting ready to go on the European leg of The Nicki Wrld Tour with Juice WRLD, who replaced Future as the co-headliner. She dropped the equally captivating video for “Good Form” in November.

Watch the chaos unfold in the video above.
