Here’s a timelapse of 10,000 larvae eating a whole pizza

By Chloe Bryan

Pizza is one of the only good things left in this world. If you’d like to ruin it for yourself, we’d suggest viewing this.

Science Magazine, a publication that hates when we feel happy, uploaded a timelapse on Wednesday featuring 10,000 black soldier fly larvae eating a pizza in two hours. Ew!

Researchers, who posted their findings in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, are studying the flow of larvae on the surface of the pizza during feeding. They’re hoping to learn more about how, once full, the grubs “can be turned into high-protein food for animals such as chickens and fish that humans are more interested in eating.” Hopefully, this will end up cutting down on food waste.

So, it’s larvae eating pizza for a good cause. But it’s still larvae eating pizza, which is why my verdict is: Thanks, I hate it.

Apple releases fix for disastrous group FaceTime bug

Make it happen.
Make it happen.

Image: Chesnot / getty

2017%252f09%252f18%252f2b%252fjackbw5.32076.jpg%252f90x90By Jack Morse

Better late than never.

Apple has finally released an update for iOS that fixes a serious bug in group FaceTime which allowed callers to spy on those they were calling — even if the intended recipient never answered. The update, iOS 12.1.4, was made available for download on Feb. 7 and follows shortly on the heels of two Congressional lawmakers publicly demanding answers from Apple CEO Tim Cook about the major privacy screw up.

SEE ALSO: Apple was warned of the FaceTime bug over a week ago

According to Apple the update is for all iPhones newer than the 5s, the iPad Air and later iPads, as well as the iPod touch 6th generation. It mitigates what the company describes as a “logic issue [that] existed in the handling of Group FaceTime calls.”

That so-called logic issue, discovered by a teenager in mid-January, burst into the public eye on Jan. 28 and forced Apple to disable the group FaceTime service altogether (it has now been turned back on). News of the vulnerability was met with shock by the security community, which correctly pointed out how big out a deal this really was.

The Facetime bug works in both iOS and MacOS, so now would be a good time to disable Facetime on everything and then pour out a 40 for the Apple security team.

— Eva (@evacide) January 29, 2019

With this fix finally released, you should immediately update your iOS. And, having done so, go back to listening to Apple brag about how what happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone.

France recalls Italy envoy amid war of words over yellow vests

France recalled its ambassador to Rome on Thursday in a move unprecedented since World War II saying it was fed up with “repeated, baseless” attacks by Italian political leaders on the country.

The move came amid mounting tensions between the two European Union members after Italy‘s deputy prime minister met French yellow vest protesters.

France’s foreign ministry recalled its ambassador to Rome for consultations after a series of comments from Italy’s two deputy prime ministers, Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini.

“For several months, France has been the subject of repeated accusations, unfounded attacks and outlandish claims,” the ministry said in a statement, calling the situation “unprecedented”.

Di Maio and Salvini, who formed a populist coalition government together last year, have repeatedly criticised French President Emmanuel Macron, who has, in turn, targeted their “eurosceptic actions” before high-stakes European Parliament elections in May.

The latest spat erupted on Tuesday after Di Maio, head of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement, revealed he had met “yellow vest” anti-government protesters outside Paris.

He said the aim was to prepare a common front for European Parliament elections in May, while boasting on Twitter “the wind of change has crossed the Alps.”

“The most recent interferences constitute an additional and unacceptable provocation,” the French foreign ministry said.

‘Terrible president’

Macron has blasted the Italian government’s “cynicism and irresponsibility” after it began preventing rescue boats with migrants and refugees on board from docking at Italian ports and compared the rise of far-right nationalism to leprosy.

The verbal sparring has only intensified since with Salvini calling Macron a “terrible president” last month in a Facebook video.

“We don’t want to row with anyone,” Salvini said on Thursday in a statement. “We’re not interested in controversies: we are serious people and we are defending Italian interests.”

He called for the two countries to find a solution to problems that have caused tensions, including French border controls on the Italian border and demands by Rome for the extradition of far-left Italian fighters who live in France.

Salvini and De Maio angered Macron, in particular, by publicly supporting the yellow vest protesters who have taken to the streets to denounce high-living costs and a perceived indifference by the government to rural and small-town France.

Last month, Paris summoned Italy’s ambassador to protest Di Maio’s accusation that France was encouraging immigration to Europe “because European countries, France above all, have never stopped colonising dozens of African countries”.

DOJ must release redacted Michael Cohen search warrant, judge says

Michael Cohen

Legal

The ruling delivered a partial victory to media organizations that have been seeking government records in the Cohen case.

A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Justice Department to release redacted versions of its search warrant and other materials tied to the FBI’s April 2018 raid on Michael Cohen, Donald Trump‘s former personal lawyer.

In a 30-page opinion, U.S. District Court Judge William Pauley delivered a partial victory to several media organizations that have been seeking the sensitive government records in the Cohen case, including its search warrant, warrant applications and supporting affidavits.

Story Continued Below

Cohen, a longtime Trump attorney and fixer, is scheduled to begin serving a three-year prison sentence on March 6 for a series of tax fraud and lying charges.

Media companies including CNN, The New York Times and The Associated Press sued to gain access to the government materials connected to the FBI raid of Cohen’s home, hotel room, office, safe deposit box, cellphones and other electronic equipment. The move was a critical early phase of the government’s investigation into potential Trump campaign malfeasance.

Trump complained about the raid at the time, declaring on Twitter: “Attorney-client privilege is dead!”

Pauley, a Bill Clinton appointee based in New York federal court, accepted the news outlets’ First Amendment and common law arguments seeking public access to the materials. But in allowing DOJ to first make redactions, the judge also heeded the government’s warnings that releasing everything could jeopardize its ongoing investigation, including a probe into Cohen’s campaign finance crimes that has implicated Trump himself.

“At this stage, wholesale disclosure of the materials would reveal the scope and direction of the Government’s ongoing investigation,” Pauley wrote. “It would also unveil subjects of the investigation and the potential conduct under scrutiny, the full volume and nature of the evidence gathered thus far, and the sources of information provided to the Government.”

“And if the past is any prologue, unmasking those who are cooperating with the Government’s investigation or who have otherwise provided information to the Government could deter further cooperation with the investigation by ‘subject[ing] those individuals to witness tampering, harassment, or retaliation,’” the judge added.

Pauley’s decision also allows DOJ to black out the names of the special agents who signed the Cohen search warrant and other materials, as well as other identifying information like their experience or techniques and procedures.

And the judge said redactions can be made to limit the release of the names of people around Cohen where the public “might infer criminal complicity, as opposed to references to individuals or entities mentioned only in passing.” That includes Cohen’s transactions connected to his tax medallion business, according to the ruling.

Pauley did order DOJ to release materials tied to the charges against Cohen involving tax evasion and false statements that he made to financial institutions, as well as anything dealing with Cohen’s conduct that didn’t lead to criminal charges.

Thursday’s decision gives DOJ until Feb. 28 to submit the materials to the court under seal with the proposed redactions. After that, Pauley said he will order the government to file the materials on the public docket.

A spokesman for the Southern District of New York and a representative for Cohen declined to comment on the ruling. Attorneys for the media coalition did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Back in my day, people sent hate mail to their representatives the good old fashioned way — with letters.

When I was a young kid, I once sent “hate mail” to George H.W. Bush using cut out magazine letters, accusing the president of failing to adequately protect the dolphin community. Nowadays, angry citizens are more sophisticated. They’re even willing to use edible means of engagement.

Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, for example, started receiving fortune cookie hate mail.

The senator also says he received a cookie which “expressed a hope for me to be trapped in an elevator” with people who were angry at him. The cookie was possibly a reference to an incident where protestors crowded Senator Jeff Flake in an elevator during the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings.

The Senator further requested that he be sent a fresher batch of hate mail cookies:

Listen: If you’re a member of the left, there are plenty of reasons to hate Senator Sasse. He’s a strong conservative. His book, The Vanishing American Adult: Our Coming-of-Age Crisis—and How to Rebuild a Culture of Self-Reliance, received mixed reviews, with one outlet accusing the Senator of being a “millennial bashing baby.”

But do you really want to waste a perfectly good fortune cookie on a Senator? Fortune cookies are some of the best mass-produced cookies in the damn game. It’s hard to even find them in supermarkets.

My fortune is now telling me to go out and consume a whole bag. Thanks for the inspiration, Senator Sasse’s troll.

We’ve reached out to Sasse’s office for comment, and we’ll update this post if we hear back.
