Steelers Happy to Let Big Ben Lead Them, but They May Not Be for Long

Let’s say you’re a Steelers fan.

Chances are you are angry with Antonio Brown.

You think he was a me-first guy. You think he destroyed the locker room. You believe he was an egotistical jerk. You’re glad he’s likely played his last game for the franchise. Good riddance, you say.

Chances are you are done with Le’Veon Bell, too.

You hate that he sat out last season because he wanted a bigger payday. You believe he’s another me-first egomaniac. You’re more than ready to tell him, “Don’t let the Terrible Towel hit you on the way out the door, Le’Veon.”

This is not how every Steelers fan feels, but it’s not a stretch to believe many of them do. For a time, they may even be glad the team is fully in the hands of Ben Roethlisberger. As Pittsburgh GM Kevin Colbert told reporters Wednesday, Roethlisberger is now the Steelers’ “unquestioned leader.”

But is that a good thing?

What the Steelers are doing this offseason may represent one of the riskiest offseason plans any modern franchise has undertaken. Rarely does a team dump two superstars in one offseason.

It’s the equivalent of the Patriots parting ways with Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman. It means Pittsburgh is going all-in on Roethlisberger, and while he is a seasoned player, and future Hall of Famer, there are still potential problems with this strategy.

There are some NFL assistant coaches who believe Roethlisberger can carry a team the way Russell Wilson does, and there are some who think Bell and Brown carried Roethlisberger, and with their departures, the quarterback will be exposed.

Let’s tackle the second part first, as we have some evidence for that argument.

Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell were considered high maintenance in some NFL circles, but both impressed Steelers teammates and coaches with their work ethic.

Brown is one of the greatest receivers of his generation. He’s tied with Marvin Harrison and Brandon Marshall for the most seasons with at least 100 catches and 10 receiving scores in league history, according to ESPN Stats & Info. His four such seasons best Jerry Rice’s three.

Bell had a similar impact, and the combination of Bell and Brown at times proved devastating. During one January 2017 playoff game against the Dolphins, the two combined for 36 touches, 298 total yards and four touchdowns.

Despite the impression that Brown (and Bell to some degree) are divas (reputations that were somewhat justified), both players also are seen as relentlessly hard workers.

“Le’Veon is a guy that’s totally into football,” former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley said this week on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He’d sit by my office before the team meeting in the morning and have his iPad out, watching tape.”

Haley added that Brown was the hardest-working player he’s ever coached in his 24 years in the NFL.

“AB is arguably the hardest worker I’ve ever been around,” Haley said. “It comes through his competitive nature, desire. … You could never ask anything more of that guy. He wanted to do it all, all the time. What more could you ask for?”

Now for the hard part: Can Roethlisberger transform what the Steelers have left into what they have been in the Ben-Bell-Brown era? The team thinks so.

He did throw for more than 5,000 yards and had a passer rating of 96.5 last season, his highest since 2014. And while no one would confuse the production of receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and running back James Conner with Brown and Bell, both had their moments last season, showing at least enough to think they could provide a reasonable facsimile of what Brown and Bell offered.

Still, it’s also true that Roethlisberger has had double-digit interceptions for four straight years. And while Smith-Schuster is talented, he and Roethlisberger now won’t have the benefit of Brown getting constant double-teams. As for Conner, though he did run for more than 100 yards five times last season, he also produced five games with 60 rushing yards or fewer.

JuJu Smith-Schuster had 1,426 yards receiving and seven touchdowns last season but likely will be forced to face the league's top defensive backs next season as the presumptive No. 1 receiver in Pittsburgh.

Then, finally, there is the huge black and gold elephant in the room, and that’s Roethlisberger’s leadership skills. Former teammates have characterized him as a poor teammate. Former Steeler and future Hall of Famer Hines Ward said Roethlisberger “should know better” than to openly criticize teammates, as Roethlisberger has done on more than a few occasions. If Colbert’s recent comments exalting his QB are any indication, though, the team doesn’t seem to have a problem with Roethlisberger’s approach with a roster Colbert described as “kids” working under the soon-to-be 37-year-old.

With Brown and Bell on the team, Roethlisberger’s leadership was tempered by other spheres of influence in the locker room. Without them, it’s all on Roethlisberger. The Steelers seem happy with this.

But the question is…

…should they be?

Senegal candidates wrap up campaigns ahead of presidential vote

Dakar, Senegal – Senegal’s presidential candidates are wrapping up their election campaigns on Friday, as rights groups call on authorities to make sure the vote is held in a climate free of violence and intimidation.

More than six million Senegalese citizens have registered to take part in Sunday’s poll, the first since the West African country cut the presidential term from seven years to five in 2016.

Five candidates are in the running for the country’s top office with incumbent President Macky Sall seeking a second and final term in office.

Ahead of Senegal election, voters turn to political satire

Sall, 57, is favourite to win the poll after two of the country’s most well-known opposition leaders were barred from contesting the election.

Former mayor of the capital Dakar, Khalifa Sall – who is not related to President Sall – is serving a five-year jail term on corruption charges.

Meanwhile, Karim Wade – son of the country’s former leader Abdoulaye Wade – went into exile in Qatar in 2017 after serving half of a six-year jail term on corruption charges.

Both deny the charges, which they say are politically motivated.

Macky Sall, who took office in 2012, is expected to address his supporters late Friday at the national football stadium in Dakar.

‘France’s candidate’

“He has done better than [former president] Abdoulaye Wade ,” Daouda Ngom, a security guard, told Al Jazeera in front of Sall’s party headquarters in the Mermoz neighbourhood of the city.

“During his seven years he has done better than 12 years of Wade,” he continued.

“He has achieved many things, we have many more schools, universities, and also achievements in infrastructure.”

However, opposition supporters do not share that assessment of the president’s performance in office.

On the other side of the city in the Sacre Coeur neighbourhood, critics said the president has not done much except further the interests of France, the country’s former colonial ruler.

“Macky Sall has no ability to change our lives,” said Mamadou Goumbada, a retired teacher.

“He has sold the country’s wealth to French companies. He is France’s candidate. Idrissa Seck will never do that,” The 70-year-old opposition supporter told Al Jazeera, referring to the country’s former prime minister, who is challenging Sall for the presidency.

The campaign period has been relatively trouble free but rights group Amnesty international said at least two people have been killed since campaigning started on February 2.

“While authorities should protect and promote human rights in the context of elections, particularly the right to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, all candidates should also remind their supporters to refrain from using violence in any circumstance,”  Francois Patuel, Amnesty International’s West Africa researcher, said on Thursday.

Polling centres will open at 8am local time (0800 GMT) and close at 6pm local (1800 GMT).

If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote on Sunday, a runoff will be held on March 24.

Senegal, a country of more than 15 million people, is one of the most stable democracies in Africa and has had three largely peaceful transfers of power since independence from France in 1960

Chinese Rap Group Higher Brothers Recruits Schoolboy Q, Soulja Boy, More For New Album

Daniel Boczarski/Redferns

Over the past few years, thanks to a persistent web presence and a determination to take risks, Chinese trap dynamos Higher Brothers have steadily become the most famous hip-hop group in their home country — and one whose name is known far and wide in the West as well. “Rap is becoming more popular in China, because the Internet is making the world closer,” member MaSiWei told Paper in June 2017. “Higher Brothers is representing China and we want to continue putting Asia on the map.”

That same month, a viral video of rappers like Migos, Joey Purp, Denzel Curry, and more watching the group’s “Made in China” music video became an essential part of their story. All of them unsurprisingly dug the song and the four members’ energies. Some even said they’d be open to working together in the future.

Now, less than two years later, Higher Brothers have released their second album, Five Star, and included in its 14 tracks are collaborations with rap heavy hitters like Curry himself, Schoolboy Q, J.I.D., Rich Brian, Soulja Boy, Ski Mask the Slump God, and more. It’s out today (February 22) and features the singles “Open It Up,” “16 Hours,” and the Chinese New Year celebration anthem, “Gong Xi Fa Cai.”

Each track on Five Stars is helmed by a different producer, allowing for all four Higher Brothers — MaSiWei, DZKnow, Psy.P, and Melo — to showcase their flows across a panoply of atmospheres, from airy and breezy “Flexing So Hard” to slick and poppy on “Sunshine” to yearning trap&B on “Need Me Now” to smoldering on the Ski Mask/Curry collab “One Man Punch.”

Though Higher Brothers have been active for years, this new album feels like a proper arrival. “Just a couple of years ago when we were all living in one room together with nothing at all — and not knowing any English,” the group tweeted from the 88rising account right before the album dropped. “We couldn’t have imagined to come this far. This album represents our dreams.”

When sex ed doesn’t cut it, texting services can help

The internet has changed how kids learn about sex, but sex ed in the classroom still sucks. In Sex Ed 2.0, Mashable explores the state of sex ed and imagines a future where digital innovations are used to teach consent, sex positivity, respect, and responsibility.

Unlike many sex education curriculums, sexual health text services offer personalized resources catered to young people’s behaviors, preferences, and lifestyles. If teens have questions about their bodies, sex, or relationships, their answers may just be a text away.

The utility of these tools is clear: Forty-five percent of teens say they are almost constantly online, according to a Pew Research Center survey.

What’s more, people feel most comfortable discussing sensitive topics on the apps and channels that they know, says Mike Gozzo, the chief technology officer at Smooch, a Montreal-based messaging platform.

“It’s really, really important that if you want to get, let’s say, a teen to reach out to you with something that’s on their mind, that you’re present where they are,” says Gozzo.

Knowing this, some organizations are finding ways to be digital-first, whether that means training volunteers to send approachable, informative texts or designing a sexual education chatbot.

But while digital resources are useful, it’s important to note that they can’t replace comprehensive sex ed curriculums.

“I think what’s important … is that we still remember what can be done in-person in sex education that still can’t be replicated in the digital environment,” says Leslie Kantor, the former vice president of education for Planned Parenthood and the chair of the department of urban-global public health at Rutgers School of Public Health.

SEE ALSO: Sex ed fails teens by ignoring sexting

As Kantor explains, most digital tools are designed for people seeking a solution to an immediate problem and also don’t offer the opportunity to practice things like using a condom. On the other hand, comprehensive sex education curriculums in schools help young people think about topics and situations before they become pressing, such as unhealthy behaviors and communication within a relationship. But at the same time, many teens aren’t getting comprehensive sex education at school. Only 24 states and D.C. require sex education, and what is taught in the classroom can differ from school to school.

Digital tools can help fill in the gaps and provide a space for teens to ask questions without feeling embarrassed. Here are three texting services that teens can turn to if they don’t want to ask a sex ed question in a classroom, don’t know who to trust, or need advice on next steps to take after an unplanned pregnancy.

1. Planned Parenthood’s Chat/Text Program

Through Planned Parenthood’s chat/text program, you can ask trained sex educators about abortion, birth control, emergency contraception, pregnancy, and STDs. All you have to do is text “PPNOW” to 774636 during certain hours

The Planned Parenthood educators on PPNOW are trained to help teens make decisions, whether that’s going to a health center, taking a pregnancy test, or getting emergency contraception, says Julia Bennett, the director of learning strategy for education at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. They’re also well-versed on various sexual health topics, she explains.

When I tested the service, I was asked to share my gender, age, zip code, and race/ethnicity before an educator asked how they can help. (Planned Parenthood told Mashable that they don’t share or sell users’ data.) I received quick, thorough responses.

For example, seven minutes after I asked if it’s necessary to eat the sugar pills in a birth control pack, it responded, “Just to clarify, what is the name of your pills?” After I clarified, the service explained it’s ok to miss the sugar pills as long as I start the next pack on time.

“There’s no hormones in them. They are just reminders to take your pills each day and of when to start your next pack,” it wrote. Good to know.

Planned Parenthood is committed to helping teens be safe and healthy, as well as guiding them through the decision-making process, says Bennett. That’s where the phone comes in.

“We know that young people are spending a lot of time on their phones and online, and so, it’s really important that we meet young people where they are instead of asking them to come to us” says Bennet.

2. Jane’s Due Process

Jane’s Due Process is a nonprofit that provides free attorneys to pregnant minors in Texas who need a judicial bypass to have an abortion without receiving permission from their parents. The nonprofit also helps teens around the country by providing a contact who can help them navigate the process, according to Eleanor Grano, the organization’s community outreach and youth engagement coordinator.

The organization partnered with Smooch to extend their existing phone helpline to a texting hotline. Using this service, teens (users need to be at least 13 years old to use the service, says Grano) can receive information about the judicial bypass process as well as general sexual health topics by texting 866-999-5263. For more complex questions about sexual health, Grano says the service will reply with links to additional resources. While teens can text the hotline to ask about the process, Grano says they will eventually need to pivot the discussion to a phone call.

Smooch’s goal was to make sure people get unbiased support, regardless of the choices they make about a pregnancy or other health situations, says Gozzo, Smooch’s CTO.

For Gozzo, texting was the best medium to achieve that goal.

“Aside from the fact that teens and pretty much everybody now is using [texting] as their primary form of communication, it’s also an easier place for you to write what you want to say to make the words come out in a way that feels less threatening, less nerve-wracking than it would be in other forms like giving a stranger a phone call,” Gozzo says.

3. Planned Parenthood’s Roo

To use Planned Parenthood’s new chatbot Roo, go to roo.plannedparenthood.org or text Roo to 22422 on your phone. A chatbot is a program that answers questions in a conversational way based on a database of knowledge — there’s no human on the other end. In a personal and friendly manner, the smiling purple chatbot answers questions about birth control, bodies, pregnancy, relationships, sex, and more.

At the start of the experience, Roo will prompt you to choose your gender from an extensive list including Female, Male, Trans Man, Trans Woman, and Non-Binary. You can also name your own or skip the question altogether.

You’ll then see a list of popular topics such as masturbation, sexual orientation and gender, health services and cost, and symptoms. Click any one of them to see questions like, “Can you get pregnant from dry humping?” or “Does it hurt to have sex for the first time?”

I asked Roo if it’s possible to get pregnant on my period, and it said that although it’s possible, it’s less common. “You’re most likely to get pregnant just before or during ovulation (when an egg is released), which is *usually* about 2 weeks before your period. But unprotected vaginal sex at *any time* can cause pregnancy.”

After its initial response, Roo directed me to additional, related resources, such as Planned Parenthood’s Tumblr post about how to use menstrual products.

For even more information, click directly on the Roo avatar to find a health center, text with a health educator, or help Planned Parenthood and Roo improve their services.

“Planned Parenthood really sees the value in reaching young people online, where they are, so we can reach young people when they need us and on the platforms in which they are already existing,” says Bennett.

‘Hungry and dirty’: More civilians leave ISIL holdout in Syria

Trucks carrying civilians left ISIL’s last pocket of territory in eastern Syria on Friday hours after coalition air raids meant to pressure the fighters targeted the area on the banks of the Euphrates River.

Reporters near the front line at Baghouz saw dozens of trucks driving out full of civilians.

Most on board were women and children, although there were some men, their faces covered with chequered scarves.

The trucks were escorted by gun-mounted pick-up trucks belonging to the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). As the convoy passed, automatic gun fire could be heard in the distance and coalition aircraft flew overhead.

The final assault

The Kurdish-led SDF surrounding the patch of land have been unable to carry out a final assault on the last enclave held by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) armed group because of the presence of the civilians.

Some 300 ISIL fighters along with civilians believed to be mostly their families, according to The Associated Press news agency, have been under siege for more than a week in the tent camp in Baghouz, near the Iraqi border.

Reuters news agency says 7,000 civilians were also holed up with the fighters, citing Mustafa Bali, head of the SDF’s media office.

As the trucks left the area, Bali told Reuters that thousands more civilians still remained inside the village.

A full evacuation of civilians was required to bring about a final defeat of ISIL in Baghouz, he told Reuters earlier on Friday.

“If we succeed in evacuating all the civilians, at any moment we will take the decision to storm Baghouz or force the terrorists to surrender,” he said.

Reporters saw dozens of trucks carrying civilians leave Baghouz on Friday [Rodi Said/ Reuters]

Bali told AP the coalition carried out air raids on Friday to pressure the fighters into allowing civilians to leave.

The SDF hopes to complete the civilian evacuations by Saturday.

‘Hungry and dirty’

In the past few weeks, nearly 20,000 people had left Baghouz through a humanitarian corridor, leaving the ISIL holdout on foot, but the fighters then closed the passage and no civilians left for a week until Wednesday, when a large group was evacuated

Bali said that screening had determined that most of those evacuated on Wednesday were not from Syria.

“The majority are Iraqi and from countries of the former Soviet Union, but there are also Europeans among them,” he told AFP.

David Eubank, the leader of the Free Burma Rangers volunteer aid group, said the women and children trucked out were “very hungry and dirty”.

They included “many French women”, as well as others from Australia, Austria, Germany and Russia, and one woman from Britain, he told AFP.

Human Rights Watch urged the SDF and the US-led coalition supporting it to make protecting civilians a priority.

“Civilians leaving Baghouz is a relief but it should not obscure the fact that this battle appears to have been waged without sufficient consideration to their wellbeing,” the New York-based watchdog’s counter-terrosim director, Nadim Houry said.

Recapturing Baghouz would mark an end to the territorial rule of ISIL’s self-declared “caliphate” that once stretched across a third of both Syria and Iraq, but the armed group is still seen as a major security threat.

It has steadily turned to guerrilla warfare and still holds territory in a remote, sparsely populated area west of the Euphrates River – a part of Syria otherwise controlled by the Syrian government and its Russian and Iranian allies.

The United States will leave “a small peacekeeping group” of 200 American troops in Syria for a period of time after a US pullout, the White House said on Thursday, as President Donald Trump pulled back from a complete withdrawal.

Trump in December ordered a withdrawal of the 2,000 troops, saying they had defeated ISIL in Syria.

Desus & Mero’s parody of ‘Green Book’ is just *chef’s kiss*

By Johnny Lieu

There are plenty of takes out there about the simplistic, and thus problematic treatment of race in the seemingly feel-good Green Book, but we think Desus & Mero explained it best.

In a parody called “The Greenest Book,” which featured in the duo’s debut episode on Showtime on Thursday, they trailer’s VO introduces a “story of a white man… who had the courage to know a black person.”

Featuring a number of the film’s memorable-ish scenes, once you’re done watching this skit, you too can declare that “racism is over now,” we guess.

James Harden Rips Referee Scott Foster After Fouling Out in Loss vs. Lakers

James Harden and Chris Paul weren’t pleased with referee Scott Foster following the Houston Rockets‘ 111-106 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.

Per ESPN.com’s Tim MacMahon, Harden expressed his frustration after being called for four offensive fouls in the game:

“Scott Foster, man. I never really talk about officiating or anything like that, but just rude and arrogant. I mean, you aren’t able to talk to him throughout the course of the game, and it’s like, how do you build that relationship with officials? And it’s not even that call [on the sixth foul]. It’s just who he is on that floor.

[…]

“It’s lingering, and it’s something that has to be looked at for sure. For sure, it’s personal. For sure. I don’t think he should be able to even officiate our games anymore, honestly.”

Paul also weighed in on Foster’s officiating after he and Harden fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t know what else to do, know what I mean?” Paul said. “I met with the league with him before and all this stuff. I don’t know what else to do.”

Foster only called two fouls against Harden in the game, and Michael Smith called the reigning NBA MVP for a charge with one minute, 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter that led to his exit.

But Foster did call Harden for two offensive fouls, including a charge against LeBron James when he was driving to the basket late in the fourth quarter and Houston was trailing by two points.

The Rockets have had a contentious relationship with Foster dating back to last season. Paul told reporters after a win over the Portland Trail Blazers in January 2018 “there’s history there” with Foster, and he sarcastically called the veteran official the man fans “pay to see.”

In a 2016 survey conducted by Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times, Foster was voted the NBA’s worst official by more than 30 players and coaches.

Harden and Paul had plenty of reasons to be frustrated, in addition to fouling out. Houston led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before the Lakers went on a 51-27 run to close the game.

Pakistan army: Will respond with ‘full force’ if India attacks

Pakistan army: Will respond with 'full force' if India attacks
The killing of Indian soldiers in Indian-administered Kashmir has ratcheted up tensions between India and Pakistan [Younis Khaliq/Reuters]

The Pakistani army has said it is prepared to defend against any attack by India, and would respond with “full force” if that happens, a spokesman said a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan authorised the military to begin preparations for a possible attack.

“We have no intention to initiate war, but we will respond with full force to full spectrum threat, that would surprise you,” said Major General Asif Ghafoor on Friday, amid heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

“We do not wish to go to war. If it is imposed on us, we have the right to respond,” he told a news conference in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

India vowed a “jaw-breaking response” to a suicide bombing in the disputed Kashmir region last week claimed by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) armed group.

The attack killed 42 Indian soldiers – the worst such attack since the start of an armed rebellion in 1989.

Pakistan said it was “not involved in any way, means or form” in the attack which it claimed was “conceived, planned and executed indigenously”.

In the statement, Pakistan reiterated its offer to help investigate the attack and to take action against anyone found to be using the Pakistani soil for attacks on India.

Pakistan also offered to hold a “dialogue” with India on all issues, including “terrorism”. Earlier, it had demanded India provide evidence for its claims that it supports Kashmiri rebel groups.

India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads for seven decades over the Himalayan region of Kashmir, now one of the most militarised zones in the world.

India accuses Pakistan of harbouring and aiding armed rebels who target its forces in Kashmir, but Pakistan denies the allegations.

The latest tensions have raised fears of possible military escalations between the longtime rivals.

Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, is split between Pakistani and Indian zones of control, but both countries claim it in its entirety and have fought two of their three wars over it.

Chris O’Dowd tries to guess what Trump’s laugh sounds like and it’s horrifyingly funny

Comedian Chris O’Dowd can only presume that U.S. President Donald Trump is not familiar with his work. This is due to the fact that the comedian and actor has never heard the president let out so much as a chuckle.

“I’ve never heard the man laugh!” O’Dowd told James Corden on The Late Late Show.

Corden then asked O’Dowd and the other guest of the evening, comedian Kal Penn, to try and imitate the president laughing — with hilariously high pitched and slightly unsettling results.

It that really what Trump’s laugh sounds like? No one knows…
