North Korea denies Trump’s account of summit collapse

North Korea Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho talks during a press conference

A senior North Korean official contradicted President Donald Trump on Thursday, denying that his country had insisted on the removal of all sanctions in return for dismantling a key nuclear facility.

In a rare news conference addressing the reason why nuclear talks broke down in Hanoi early Thursday, North Korea’s minister of Foreign Affairs, Ri Yong-ho, added that his country would dismantle the facility if some U.S. sanctions are first lifted.

    Story Continued Below

Ri asked the “U.S. to lift articles of sanctions that impede the civilian economy and the livelihood of our people,” and confirmed that his country would dismantle its Yongbyon nuclear material production facility “in the presence of U.S. experts.”

Trump during a news conference earlier Thursday said North Korea “wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety” in return for dismantling Yongbyon. Trump said he walked away from his talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un because of the request.

“They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that,” Trump said.

Trump noted that Yongbyon is just one part of North Korea’s nuclear program and that “there’s plenty left after that.”

“I felt that that particular … facility, while very big, it wasn’t enough to do what we were doing,” he added.

Without specifically mentioning Trump, Ri claimed that North Korea did not ask for all sanctions to be lifted.

“What we proposed was not the removal of all sanctions, but a partial removal,” Ri said, according to a live translator.

“If the U.S. removes partial sanctions … that hamper the civilian economy and the livelihood of our people, in particular, we will permanently and completely dismantle all the nuclear material production facilities” at Yongbyon, Ri said.

Lady Gaga Says She And Bradley Cooper Aren’t In Love — Even If Ally And Jackson Maine Were

    Ed Herrera via Getty Images

2018’s A Star Is Born is a classic story of love, stardom, and tragedy — one that Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper made into a huge pop culture moment. The power of their portrayals can be found in the accolades they’ve received; two Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and over 60 other trophies since the film has been released.

The chemistry between the two leads was magnetic, creating scenes of what appeared to be a genuine connection that made the romantic story that much more authentic and ultimately heartbreaking. But on the Wednesday night (February 27) episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Gaga grabbed the figurative microphone to tell everyone that the acting was just acting and that there were no actual sparks between them.

Gaga took the stage with Kimmel for a lengthy discussion about all things A Star is Born. “It’s been quite a week,” she said before putting the Oscar trophy for Best Original Song for “Shallow” from the film on the table. The host quickly launched into a discussion about the film, digging into the question that everyone wanted to know following the film itself and their performance of “Shallow” at the 2019 Academy Awards: Is there any real-life romance between the two?

Gaga immediately rolled her eyes at the question, giving the answer everyone wanted to know before she even opened her mouth. “Social media, quite frankly, is the toilet of the internet, and what it’s done to pop culture is abysmal,” she said. “People saw love and, guess what, that’s what we wanted you to see.”

In addition to talking more about A Star Is Born, there was also a reminder that a 12-minute-extended cut of the film is coming back to theaters starting this Friday for a week. For the Jackson- and Ally Maine-obsessed, this is the opportunity to explore more of their relationship, and, by extension, the acting that went into making it feel so real.

Check out the discussion about the film and relationships above.

Blackberry sues Twitter for messaging patent infringement

BlackBerry has filed a lawsuit against Twitter for mobile messaging patent infringement.

Blackberry will see Twitter in court.

On Wednesday, former mobile phone giant BlackBerry filed a lawsuit against Twitter accusing the social media company of patent infringement. BlackBerry claims that Twitter is illegally using mobile messaging technology that the company created.

In its lawsuit, BlackBerry refers to Twitter as “a relative latecomer to the mobile messaging world.” The company claims that Twitter “created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative user interface and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”

In total, BlackBerry says that Twitter is infringing on six of its patents — covering everything from push notifications to mobile advertising.

BlackBerry states that it had reached out to Twitter in an attempt to resolve the intellectual property dispute, but was unable to reach an agreement. The company asserts in its suit that the use of its “mobile messaging innovations harms BlackBerry and provides an undeserved windfall” to Twitter.

If this all sounds familiar, that’s because BlackBerry has filed similar lawsuits against Facebook and Snapchat just last year. Both those suits are still pending litigation.

SEE ALSO: The curse of the Twitter reply guy

In 2016, BlackBerry announced it would no longer build its own hardware and instead focus on other areas of its business such as software.

Another one of those revenue-driving areas? Its patents.

“We have today about 44,000 patents,” said BlackBerry CEO John Chen at the 2015 Waterloo Innovation Summit. “The good thing about this is that we also have one of the youngest patent portfolios in the entire industry, so monetization of our patents is an important aspect of our turnaround.”

The sad reality here is that BlackBerry, once one of world’s most popular phone companies, is effectively becoming a patent troll.

When reached for comment, a Blackberry spokesperson told Mashable,”We don’t comment on pending litigation.” A Twitter spokesperson also declined to comment.

It looks like this one’s going to be settled in court.

Israel’s Netanyahu to be indicted for ‘bribery, fraud’

Israel’s attorney general will indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in one case of bribe and two cases of fraud and breach of trust, Israeli TV reported on Thursday, citing the justice ministry.

The reported decision deepens uncertainty over his prospects in a tight election race, although the announcement was expected.

The actual filing of the reported charges, which include bribery, fraud and breach of trust, will depend on the outcome of a required hearing, likely after the April 9 election, where Netanyahu can try to persuade the attorney general not to indict him.

Netanyahu, who is seeking a fourth consecutive term, denies any wrongdoing.

Netanyahu’s Likud party calls the reported charges “political persecution” and said the prime minister would make a statement at 18:00 GMT on Thursday.

This is a developing story, more soon.

Nokia PureView 9 comes to U.S. on March 3

    Count 'em.
    Count ’em.

    Image: Raymond Wong/Mashable

At this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia (now owned by HMD Global) has done something it hasn’t done in a long time: It innovated.

The company’s PureView 9 flagship is the first-ever phone to feature five rear cameras, and now it has a U.S. launch date: March 3.

SEE ALSO: The best tech of Mobile World Congress 2019

Nokia PureView 9 uses its 5-camera array in a pretty novel way. All of the sensors have a 12-megapixel resolution and an f/1.8 aperture; two shoot in color and three in monochrome, and the resulting photos should have a huge dynamic range and tons of depth information, more than any other smartphone camera.

Other specs include a 5.99-inch OLED screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip (in contrast to the latest crop of flagships which sport the new, 855 chip), 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, an under-the-display fingerprint sensor and a 3,320mAh battery.

HMD Global has sweetened the deal by offering a $100 discount on the phone in the first week of sales, bringing the price down to $599. The price goes back up to $699 on March 11.

Mashable’s Ray Wong had some hands-on time with the PureView 9, and he found some of its features impressive, though the phone overall lacked polish. Hopefully Nokia can iron out the kinks in time for the U.S. launch.

OnePlus CEO not impressed by folding phones

BARCELONA — OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, who is very picky about corners, doesn’t like the ones he sees on the folding phones here at MWC19.

“It’s not product excellence, having to stop at that level of large curvature,” he said through a translator. “My focus is on the flexible OLED technology, and as that advances and gets really good, what possibilities there are. When those fields can get really small and tight, what possibilities are there for the screen technology?”

Of course Lau would be talking about the degrees of fold. The cult phone-maker CEO, who has an engineering background, is informally known as the chief product designer at OnePlus, and once showed me how he obsessed over the corner radius when developing the OnePlus 6.

While other companies have been launching 5G phones here at MWC19, OnePlus is sticking with a teaser. Up in the Qualcomm booth, the company has what looks like a very long screen covered by a plastic shroud. The apparently tall, narrow screen is a bit of an optical illusion, caused by the casing, Lau said; what’s under there is more likely to be a more normal-looking smartphone.

“It has to go back to a form factor that’s desirable by the wider community … [I] don’t see that as a radical shift from the form factor of what already exists,” Lau said.

While OnePlus hasn’t decided on the name for the 5G phone yet, it sounds like it won’t be called the OnePlus 7. At least for now, OnePlus will be running two parallel product lines: a broadly available 4G phone line and specialized 5G products for specific carrier partners.

“The 5G products have to be customized for the individual carrier in the individual country, where the 4G product works on every network,” Lau said.

Instead of focusing on radical form factors, OnePlus is trying to develop a 5G app ecosystem. At a panel yesterday, Lau announced a competition for OnePlus fans to develop 5G app ideas. Game streaming from the cloud will definitely be one 5G application, and that led to a theme Lau thinks groundbreaking 5G apps will have.

“I think for the first stage, what a lot of feedback will be about is the tightening of the closeness between the device and the cloud. The speed between the two, what possibilities are there on that front?” Lau mused.

Leaning on the cloud more will probably require new service plans, and Lau warned that might take a little while. “Looking at the 3G to 4G transition, that was also very expensive at the beginning,” he said.

“But a technology transition as significant as this is, is going to bring about a change in carrier business models. Their focus on payment for certain amounts of data will transition; what it will turn into, I don’t know,” he said.

Donald Cerrone Teases Conor McGregor Fight at UFC 239 in Instagram Post

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 04: (R-L) UFC lightweight title challenger Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone exchanges words with UFC interim featherweight champion Conor McGregor during the UFC's Go Big launch event inside MGM Grand Garden Arena on September 4, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

      Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Getty Images

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone took to Instagram on Wednesday night to tease a potential fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 239 on July 6.

Cerrone posted a photo of a bottle of Budweiser and a bottle of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey with the caption: “@budweiser vs @properwhiskey … July 6th.”

Cerrone is sponsored by Budweiser, and McGregor is the founder of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey. Also, UFC 239 is expected to take place on July 6 in Las Vegas, leading to speculation that a fight between the two stars has been agreed upon.

After the 35-year-old Cerrone beat the up-and-coming Alexander Hernandez by second-round knockout in January, he called out McGregor.

Per ESPN.com’s Greg Rosenstein, Cerrone said after his return to the lightweight division: “The old man has still got it. This is the fight that the UFC wanted. I wanted [a] Top Five [opponent]. I want Conor if he’ll agree to it. I’m coming for a belt. Cowboy is back.”

McGregor was receptive to fighting Cerrone, as evidenced by the following tweet:

      Conor McGregor @TheNotoriousMMA

For a fight like that Donald, I’ll fight you.
      Congratulations.

While McGregor is serving a six-month suspension for his role in a brawl with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October, he is eligible to return in April, which would allow him to compete against Cerrone at UFC 239.

Cerrone owns a career record of 35-11 with one no-contest, and he is on a two-fight winning streak after losing four of his previous five bouts.

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old McGregor is 21-4, and he is the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion. McGregor is coming off a fourth-round submission loss to Nurmagomedov, and he has not won a fight since beating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016.

The break McGregor took to focus on facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match is partly to blame for that, but the Irishman is just 2-2 over his past four fights after previously winning 15 in a row.

As two of the most charismatic and popular figures in UFC, Cerrone and McGregor would undoubtedly make UFC 239 one of the most must-see MMA events of the year.
