No. 1 Gonzaga Upset by Jordan Ford, Unranked St. Mary’s in WCC Tournament Final

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 12: Zach Norvell Jr. #23 of the Gonzaga Bulldogs drives against Tanner Krebs #00 of the Saint Mary's Gaels during the championship game of the West Coast Conference basketball tournament at the Orleans Arena on March 12, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Saint Mary’s Gaels punched their ticket to the 2019 NCAA tournament with a 60-47 upset of the top-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs in the West Coast Conference championship game.

This is the first time since 2012 that Gonzaga failed to win the conference tournament.

Gaels guard Jordan Ford was one of three Saint Mary’s players to score in double figures. He led the team with 17 points, while center Jordan Hunter (12 points, 15 rebounds) posted a double-double.

The Gaels held the Gonzaga offense to nearly half its scoring average (90.2 points). The Bulldogs shot 38.3 percent from the field and went 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

Although Brandon Clarke had 16 points in the defeat, fellow Zags stars Rui Hachimura and Zach Norvell Jr. were largely invisible. Hachimura attempted just six shots en route to a nine-point night, while Norvell shot 1-of-11 and finished with two points.

Tuesday’s result is bound to have a domino effect on the seeding for the NCAA tournament.

From Gonzaga’s perspective, the selection committee may not look kindly upon such a heavy defeat this close to the Big Dance. The Bulldogs might be the No. 1 team in the country, but their hold on a No. 1 seed is far from airtight.

Sam Vecenie @Sam_Vecenie

Will also just say: Gonzaga should be a No. 1 seed regardless of this result. Don’t know if it’ll happen, but they should be. https://t.co/RyqQ54Xtkx

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanHoops

I still think Gonzaga gets a No. 1 seed.

Dan Wolken @DanWolken

Gonzaga is terrific but they should not be a 1 seed. Point blank period.

While slipping to a No. 2 seed wouldn’t be the worst outcome for Gonzaga, that would make the team’s road to the Final Four a little more difficult.

The Gaels’ win was the worst-case scenario for any at-large teams on the bubble. In his most recent edition of Bracketology, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi projected Saint Mary’s as one of his “next four out.” Now, the squad is guaranteed a place in the 68-team field.

Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein

Bubble Teams across America just realized there’s not going to be a lot of sleep between now and Sunday night. Saint Mary’s just cost somebody a chance to experience the NCAA Tournament.

The Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, ACC, SEC and Pac-12 tournaments haven’t even started yet, with all six set to tip off Wednesday. Bubble teams still have an opportunity to either impress the selection committee or claim a guaranteed tournament berth.

Conversely, a few more schools may emulate Saint Mary’s and play the role of spoiler, shrinking the margin for error even further for those programs with work to do in the coming days.

US Senate to vote on Saudi-Yemen war resolution

The US Senate will vote on Wednesday on a resolution to end Washington’s support for the Saudi Arabia-led military campaign in Yemen, as lawmakers push President Donald Trump to toughen his policy toward the kingdom.

Announcing the vote on Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders called the war “a humanitarian and strategic disaster”. Sanders, an independent who is running for president as a Democrat, is a lead co-sponsor of the resolution along with Republican Senator Mike Lee.

The Saudi-Emirati-led coalition fighting in Yemen since 2015 has consistently attacked civilians, as well as homes, schools, businesses, farms, a health clinic, a government administration building and a celebration hall, in violation of the laws of war.

Despite ongoing abuses by the alliance, the US continues to sell Saudi Arabia and the UAE weapons for use in the war on Yemen.

Veto by Trump

The vote on the war powers resolution will be the second in four months in the Senate.

The chambre passed the measure by 56-41 in December, a rebuke of Trump amid anger at Saudi Arabia not just over civilian deaths in Yemen, but also the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a Saudi consulate in Turkey.

To become effective, however, the resolution must be passed by the new Senate, which was seated in January, as well as the House of Representatives. Then it must garner enough votes to override an expected veto by Trump, who has touted the importance of a strategic alliance with Riyadh.

19 million Yemeni children suffer malnutrition and illness

The House passed its own version of the resolution in February, but a procedural issue kept it from a vote in the Senate.

‘Disaster’

The United Nations calls Yemen the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. About 14 million of the impoverished country’s 29 million population on the brink of starvation.

The war in Yemen has been at a stalemate for years, with the Saudi-Emirati-led coalition and Yemeni forces unable to dislodge Houthi rebels from the capital, Sanaa, and most urban centres.

According to the charity Save the Children, an estimated 85,000 children may have starved to death over the past four years of war.

Almost 100 civilians were either killed or wounded every week in Yemen last year, with children accounting for one-fifth of all casualties, the UN says.

Report: Odell Beckham Jr. Seeking Restructured Contract from Browns After Trade

PHILADELPHIA, PA - NOVEMBER 25: Odell Beckham #13 of the New York Giants looks on prior to the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on November 25, 2018 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

Mitchell Leff/Getty Images

Following his reported trade to the Cleveland Browns, Odell Beckham Jr. wants to restructure his contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Browns have agreed to send the 17th overall pick in the 2019 draft, a third-round pick and safety Jabrill Peppers to the New York Giants for Beckham.

Beckham’s request comes after the Oakland Raiders amended Antonio Brown‘s contract immediately after they acquired him from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Brown will receive a little over $50.1 million through the 2021 season, up from $38.9 million under the deal’s original terms. Brown’s guaranteed money also climbed from zero to $30.1 million, per Florio.

Beckham signed a five-year, $95 million extension with the Giants last August, but he has good reason to either seek a new deal or renegotiate the particulars fo his current contract.

While he has $72.7 million total left between now and 2023, only $16.7 million of that is guaranteed salary, per Over the Cap. That guaranteed money is entirely contained in the 2019 season as well, so Beckham has little in the way of long-term security.

The Browns made a big investment in Beckham through Tuesday’s trade. Cleveland would have few hurdles, however, if it wanted to release him at any point in the future.

In order to avoid any friction with their newest star, acceding to his demand is arguably the smart move for the Browns. Adding a few million dollars and increasing his guarantees wouldn’t significantly alter their financial flexibility going forward—at least much more than adding his existing contract to the payroll did.

Dark modes are all the rage, and now Chrome has come to the table.

With the release of Chrome 73 on Tuesday, the browser now natively supports the dark mode long offered in macOS Mojave.

SEE ALSO: How to enable ‘dark mode’ in 10 popular mobile apps

If you have dark mode enabled in your Mac’s settings (open up System Preferences > General, then select “Dark” by the Appearance option) then the theme should do its thing, if you have the latest version of Chrome installed.

As per Chrome 73’s release notes, Windows support is “on the way.”

Of course, there are already a number of dark themes which you can download through the Chrome store, but the latest update means you won’t need to shop around for a theme you like — you can just use the official one.

Keep in mind that Chrome’s new dark mode looks pretty much the same as Incognito Mode, minus the warning that “you’ve gone incognito.”

The trailer for ‘CRYPTO’ just dropped, and cryptocurrency is good now

KICKBACKS.
KICKBACKS.

2017%252f09%252f18%252f2b%252fjackbw5.32076.jpg%252f90x90By Jack Morse

With all the exit scams, weird meat obsessions, and cantankerous fan-boy culture, the world of cryptocurrency is kind of a drag. And that’s without even touching on the current and persistent bear market.

But all that has changed, denizens of the internet. Cryptocurrency is good now, and we owe it all to the trailer for the upcoming crypto-themed action flick starring none other than Snake Plissken himself. Say hello to CRYPTO, the film that, like its eponymous subject matter, features a bunch of idiots fighting over bullshit and terrible security practices.

SEE ALSO: One of the most popular Ethereum apps sure looks like a Ponzi scheme

The trailer for the film, featuring an appropriately bedraggled Kurt Russell, hit the internet on March 11 and oh boy did it get our blood flowing. Go ahead and take a peek. We’ll wait.

Breathtaking, right? Did you take a moment to bathe in the reflected glory of Luke Hemsworth and Alexis Bledel. Yes? Good, let’s move on.

The story, as much as there appears to be one, follows an anti-money laundering expert’s trip to small town America and a subsequent run in with the Russian mob. But put that aside for a moment, and let’s focus on the verisimilitude of the thing.

It can only go up.

It can only go up.

Image: screenshot / “crypto”

From the amazing file labeling system (hello “KICKBACKS”), to the apparent Coinbase knockoff DELTA COIN listing bitcoin cash at $983.74 (which, LOL), CRYPTO proves that the true cryptocurrency magic happens on the big screen.

I’ll take “Separate blockchain,” please.

Image: screenshot / “crypto”

Of course, no crypto thriller would be complete without a bunch of ones and zeros flashing across a character’s computer to signify a hack. But you needn’t worry, because CRYPTO has that, too.

Oh no! A HACKER ATTACK!

Oh no! A HACKER ATTACK!

Image: screenshot / “crypto”

If there’s one thing the trailer makes crystal clear it’s that CRYPTO the movie, unlike actual cryptocurrency, will never let you down. So go ahead and take out that third mortgage on your house, and stock up on tickets now. It will be totally worth it, and that’s a guarantee. And, well, if we’re wrong, then John McAfee will eat his own dick on TV.

The movie is hitting select theaters on April 12, and will also be available on demand. We can’t wait.

Report: Odell Beckham Jr. Traded to Browns for Draft Picks, Jabrill Peppers

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (13) warms up before an NFL football game against the New York Jets, Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, in East Rutherford, N.J. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

Bill Kostroun/Associated Press

The New York Giants reportedly are trading superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns, in a move sure to send reverberations throughout the NFL.

Mike Garafolo @MikeGarafolo

BREAKING: The #Browns have traded for #Giants WR Odell Beckham, sources say. The deal is done. I am not joking.

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

Odell Beckham Jr. traded to Cleveland, as @MikeGarafolo reported.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants are receiving this year’s No. 17 overall pick, a 2019 third-rounder and safety Jabrill Peppers.

Although Beckham’s off-field antics often generated unwanted headlines, the Giants appeared willing to look past those issues because of his on-field success.

The 26-year-old LSU product recorded 390 catches for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns across 59 games after the Giants selected him with the 12th overall pick in 2014. He tallied at least 90 receptions, 1,300 yards and 10 scores in each of his first three seasons.

His 2017 campaign came to a premature end in October when he suffered a fractured ankle. He also missed the final four games in 2018 because of a quad injury.

Tensions between Beckham and the Giants began to rise in March 2018.

Giants co-owner John Mara caused the trade winds to start blowing when he refused to say whether Beckham would be with the team for the 2018 season, per Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.

“I can’t answer that one way or another,” Mara said. “We’re certainly not shopping him if that’s what you’re asking. But again, when you’re coming off a season where you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say that anybody is untouchable.”

In late March 2018, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Beckham would “not set foot on a field without a new contract extension.”

The Giants wound up giving Beckham a five-year, $95 million contract extension in August, but they’re moving on from him less than a year later. Trying to replace one of the league’s most explosive playmakers will be an uphill battle for New York.

Beckham should immediately take over as the Browns’ top target. He’ll join a promising receiving corps that also features Jarvis Landry, Antonio Callaway and Rashard Higgins.

No one should be happier about the trade than Baker Mayfield, who showed signs of improvement throughout his rookie year and now has a true No. 1 wideout at his disposal.

Australian Cardinal George Pell jailed six years for abusing boys

Disgraced Australian Cardinal George Pell was sentenced to six years in prison on Wednesday for the sexual abuse of two boys in 1996 in a Melbourne cathedral.

Pell – once the Vatican’s chief financial officer and an adviser to Pope Francis – is the highest-ranking Catholic Church official to be convicted of molesting children.

He faced a maximum sentence of 50 years in jail.

Going through the crimes in graphic detail, Chief Judge Peter Kidd told the Melbourne court Pell’s actions had a “profound impact” on the life of the boy who survived his abuse, and likely had a similar impact on a boy who later died of a heroin overdose.

He accused Pell of “callous indifference” to the suffering of the boys, who have not been named.

In December, the now 77-year-old was found guilty on five charges relating to the sexual assault of two boys at Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral in 1996. The media was unable to report on the conviction until February because of a suppression order.

Angela Sdrinis, a Melbourne lawyer who has represented victims of abuse for more than two decades, said “the conviction of George Pell shows victims of child sex abuse that no one is above the law”.

The judge started the proceedings by saying Pell was on trial and not the Catholic Church.

Pell is “entitled to the balanced and steady hand of justice”, Kidd told the court, lamenting a “lynch mob mentality” among some of the public.

“You are not to be made a scapegoat,” Kidd said.

Pilots complained at least 5 times about Boeing 737 MAX problems, records show

Boeing 737 MAX 8

In a separate report from October, a pilot complained that a MAX 8’s autothrottles — which command the plane to accelerate to a set speed within certain parameters — were not working properly even though the crew had engaged them. | Stephen Brashear/Getty Images

Pilots in the U.S. complained at least 5 times in recent months about problems controlling their Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets during critical moments of flight, federal records show, adding to questions raised by deadly crashes involving that model of jetliner in Ethiopia and Indonesia.

Some of the incidents appear to involve the same anti-stall system that has come up as a potential cause of October’s Indonesia crash, according to a review of a Federal Aviation Administration incident database that lets pilots self-report trouble. Investigators have not said whether the same technology had emerged as a possible cause of Sunday’s crash in Ethiopia, although both involved airliners that mysteriously plunged to the ground minutes after takeoff.

Story Continued Below

For one U.S. incident in November 2018, a commercial airline pilot reported that during takeoff, the autopilot was engaged and “within two to three seconds the aircraft pitched nose down,” in a manner steep enough to trigger the plane’s warning system, which sounded “Don’t sink, don’t sink!”

After the autopilot was disengaged, the plane climbed as normal, according to the report.

The reports are submitted anonymously to help improve reporting of safety problems and so do not include any information about which airline was involved. In addition, though the reports have a spot to note what airport was involved, often pilots do not fill out that field.

The November incident occurred days or weeks after the October crash in Indonesia, which killed 189 people aboard a Boeing 737 MAX 8 operated by Lion Air. The report noted that before the plane involved in the November incident took off, the crew had “discussed the recent MAX 8 [anti-stall] guidance” issued by the FAA and Boeing.

In both the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air crashes, the plane descended sharply more than once as pilots wrestled with the controls before crashing. In the case of Lion Air, preliminary facts suggest that the cause may have been the anti-stall system, which was designed to force the plane’s nose down if it seemed to be rising steeply enough to risk a stall.

Pilots groups have complained that Boeing did too little to ensure that pilots or airlines were aware of the new anti-stall feature — or knew how to turn it off if it were malfunctioning or acting on faulty data.

In a separate U.S. incident in November, a pilot reported that trouble started when he or she engaged the autopilot after leveling off from takeoff: The co-pilot “called out ‘DESCENDING,’ followed by an almost immediate: ‘DONT SINK DONT SINK!’” warning, the pilot wrote. But the plane resumed climbing after the crew disengaged the autopilot.

In another report, a commercial airline pilot complained about how the FAA and Boeing were handling the problem.

While the FAA had issued an emergency directive on Nov. 7, 2018, to help pilots understand how to handle problems with the anti-stall technology, “it does nothing to address the systems issues,” the pilot wrote. The pilot further noted that the flight manuals had yet to be updated with that information at that time.

“I think it is unconscionable that a manufacturer, the FAA, and the airlines would have pilots flying an airplane without adequately training, or even providing available resources and sufficient documentation to understand the highly complex systems that differentiate this aircraft from prior models,” the pilot wrote. “The fact that this airplane requires such jury rigging to fly is a red flag. Now we know the systems employed are error prone — even if the pilots aren’t sure what those systems are, what redundancies are in place, and failure modes.”

The pilot added: “I am left to wonder: what else don’t I know? The Flight Manual is inadequate and almost criminally insufficient. All airlines that operate the MAX must insist that Boeing incorporate ALL systems in their manuals.”

In a separate report from October, a pilot complained that a MAX 8’s autothrottles — which command the plane to accelerate to a set speed within certain parameters — were not working properly even though the crew had engaged them. The pilot noticed quickly and adjusted the thrust manually to continue to climb.

“Shortly afterwards I heard about the (other carrier) accident and am wondering if any other crews have experienced similar incidents with the autothrottle system on the MAX?” the pilot wrote in the report. The pilot wrote that both he or she and the captain were new with this model plane and thus “not able to identify whether it was the aircraft or me that was in error.”
