Josh Rosen Trade Rumors: Giants Would Explore Dealing for Cardinals QB

The New York Giants have been major sellers so far in the new NFL year, so it comes as a change of pace to see them reportedly interested in adding a player.

Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reported Wednesday night on the Giants’ direction and mentioned that the team may be interested in exploring a trade for Arizona Cardinals second-year quarterback Josh Rosen:

“Even as they signal a commitment to a rebuilding plan, the New York Giants still do not expect to move on from 38-year-old quarterback Eli Manning this year, according to multiple sources familiar with their strategy.

[…]

“Sources said they would explore a trade for Arizona’s Josh Rosen, if the Cardinals decide to make him available, but that they aren’t sure yet whether that will happen or whether they would be sure to make an offer for Rosen if it did.”

The commitment to Manning has earned general manager Dave Gettleman criticism, especially as New York has parted ways with much younger assets such as wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and safety Landon Collins.

This article will be updated to provide more information on this story as it becomes available.

US Senate passes bill to halt Saudi military support in Yemen

Washington, DC – The US Senate voted 54-46 to block further involvement by the US military in the war in Yemen, where Saudi and UAE bombings conducted with American weapons are blamed for causing mass civilian deaths, starvation, and disease.

“We have the opportunity to take a major step forward in ending the horrific war in Yemen and alleviating that terrible, terrible suffering being experienced by the people in one of the poorest countries in the world,” Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, said.

“There is no secret as to why there is a cholera epidemic. It’s because the Saudis bombed the water treatment facilities so the water isn’t clean anymore,” said Senator Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat.

Aid groups estimate as many as 60,000 civilians have been killed in the war and as many as 85,000 children starved to death.

The Senate action sends the resolution back to the House of Representatives, which is expected to approve it a second time after having voted 248-177 on February 13 to approve the measure. The resolution is being brought forward under the War Powers Act of 1973, a Vietnam War-era law that asserts Congress’ authority over deployment of US military power.

“We have been supporting and in some case actively participating in this war,” said Senator Mike Lee, a Utah Republican.

Veto threat

The Trump White House has threatened to veto the joint House and Senate resolution if it reaches the president’s desk. Officials assert the US needs a free hand to support Saudi Arabia in a regional conflict with Iran while pushing for a diplomatic resolution to the Yemen conflict.

Congress would need two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override the president’s veto for the resolution to gain effect. So far, backers lack sufficient votes in both the House and Senate to override the president.

Republican leaders supporting Trump argued US lawmakers’ concerns about the killing of Saudi journalist and US resident Jamal Khashoggi should be addressed separately.

“Concern about Saudi Arabia’s human rights issues should be addressed to the administration and Saudi officials,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican. “That’s what I have chosen to do and what I have asked others to do.”

The resolution would “harm bilateral relationships in the region” and “negatively affect our ability to prevent the spread of violent extremist organisations” such as al-Qaeda and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the White House said.

The Trump administration argues that, by directing the military to support a US ally, the president is acting within his constitutional authority. The president’s “senior advisers would recommend he veto the joint resolution”, the White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement of administration policy.

Republicans further warned the measure could lead to American casualties in Saudi Arabia if it prevented the US military from sharing intelligence on targeting of population centres by Houthi missiles.

Peace talks

United Nations special envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths met with US senators behind closed doors on March 11.

“The UN-led peace talks are our best hope going forward,” and “congressional actions may influence critical peace negotiations”, Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Jim Risch, an Idaho Republican, said in a statement afterward supporting the Trump administration’s posture.

Others took a different view of Griffiths’ briefing. Senator Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat, said he was surprised Griffiths did not urge the Senate to refrain from advancing the resolution.

19 million Yemeni children suffer malnutrition and illness

“Those of us who went to the hearing Monday afternoon fully expected him to tell us, ‘Here’s why I think your resolution is a bad idea.’ He didn’t say that. We asked him directly. He did not say, ‘Please don’t vote for this resolution on Yemen.’ In fact, he said some things that I was very surprised that he said,” Kaine told Al Jazeera.

Griffiths informed senators the Houthis have legitimate issues with the Saudi-backed Yemen government that need to be addressed, and further military action would not advance either side’s interest. Griffiths told senators the only viable solution in Yemen is a political settlement, according to Kaine.

Congress is increasingly frustrated with the Trump administration’s handling of the US relationship with Saudi Arabia.

Killing Khashoggi

A bipartisan group of senators led by Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey introduced a bill on February 7 that would impose sanctions on members of the Saudi royal family and others for the killing of Khashoggi. Republican senators Lindsey Graham, Susan Collins and Todd Young are co-sponsors.

US intelligence agencies have concluded Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved in Khashoggi’s killing. Trump has declined to answer demands from Congress that the US reach a determination on Prince Mohammed’s role and impose sanctions under US human rights law, the Global Magnitsky Act.

“All of the evidence suggests that the Saudi crown prince was directly responsible for that murder,” Sanders said.

The Trump administration has not provided senators any information about meetings Trump’s son-in-law and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner had with Prince Mohammed in Riyadh in late February. Kushner had visited a number of Middle East countries seeking support for the US’ plan for Israel and the Palestinians.

Asked whether senators have been briefed on the White House’s discussions in Riyadh, Kaine told Al Jazeera: “No we have not. Not about Khashoggi. Not about Yemen. Not about discussions about nuclear technology transfer. We have no information.”

The House Oversight Committee has demanded documents from the White House on plans to sell nuclear power technology to Saudi Arabia.

Alexa can do a lot more in your car with Echo Auto skills

Amazon’s Echo Auto just skilled up.Β

Developers can now make skills just for the Auto, which works with your phone or with some in-car infotainment systems. What’s it for? It’s basically an Alexa digital assistant device made specifically for the car.Β

Amazon announced on Wednesday the new customizable skill-making for the car, which it argues is different from developing skills for a living room or kitchen space. Car skills will determine how each is designed and works, whether it’s a game or a news-reading app.Β

SEE ALSO: Amazon’s Echo Auto is finally here

Amazon doled out advice for those looking to create skills for the car, such as keeping responses quick, considering synchronization with Alexa outside the car or when first coming into the car from elsewhere, location awareness, and using voice only.Β

Amazon released a developer guide, “Best Practices for Designing Alexa Skills for Automotive,” going deeper into skill design for drivers, passengers, and driving instead of the typical Alexa user in a house. Β

Designing a skill for a car-only use-case is similar to a new trivia app made for commuters called Drivetime. It uses the same design principles to make it car-friendly, with long pauses, extended time for spoken answers, and a truly hands-free experience. Alexa developers are advised to limit any interactions with the Alexa app and Auto device β€” the Auto skills can’t be distracting because the user is behind the wheel.

The Echo Auto remains a fairly elusive car gadget β€” you can only get it through a waitlist-request system on Amazon. People are starting to wonder where it is. Today’s announcement about car-specific skills seems like a good sign that a wider rollout is coming soon.

What is going on with the Amazon Echo Auto? It’s been months since it was announced and it’s still only available on an invite-only basis in the US.

β€” Barry Collins (@bazzacollins) March 12, 2019

It’s listed at 50 percent off and only $24.99 for now, but once it’s more widely available, it’s supposed to bump up to $50. The Echo Auto is also still lagging behind on its compatibility with other apps like Apple Maps and Waze, which the website still says will be “available later this year.” Apple Music is still “coming soon.”

As long as it works in the car, people are eager to get their hands on the newest Alexa device.

Flight on Southwest or American? Make sure it wasn’t on a Boeing 737 Max.

The FAA may have just messed up your travel plans.Β

On Wednesday, the agency announced that it’s grounding all Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 airplanes after two fatal crashes in the last five months. The two airlines with the most Boeing 737 Max 8 planes? Southwest with 34 and American Airlines with 24.Β

The Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday prompted the groundings. Just a few months before in October, the same type of plane crashed in Indonesia.

As President Donald Trump made the announcement Wednesday, more than a dozen flights on the affected planes were mid-trip. They will be allowed to land at their final destinations, but once on the ground they have been ordered to stay there as part of the temporary grounding order.Β

The planes represent only about 4 percent of Southwest’s fleet of about 750 planes, but in the coming days, those 34 unavailable planes will make rebooking a mess. American has a larger fleet of about 1,000 planes.

In a statement, Southwest said it was complying with the FAA requirement even though it remained confident in the Max 8 after more than 41,000 completed flights. As far as the impact on travelers, “Our goal is to operate our schedule with every available aircraft in our fleet to meet our Customers’ expectations during the busy spring travel season,” the company wrote.Β

That means Southwest is offering free rebookings for any customer on a canceled Max 8 flight. They can do so with any other flights with no fees or fare differences. Anyone traveling on Southwest or American flights in the next few days should check their aircraft type to see if they are on a Max 8 plane.Β

A Southwest spokesperson noted that its Max 8 planes are distributed across different cities and regions. That means any random flight could be affected, so check your flight info.

The flight tracking site FlightAware reported 440 Southwest cancellations Wednesday β€” the most of any airline. American had only 196.

American Airlines wrote in a statement that American flies on Max 8 planes 85 times a day, which is only 1.2 percent of its 6,700 daily flights.

The airline said, “Our teams will make every effort to rebook customers as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

If customers opt out of booking new flights, they can instead request a full refund.

The Max 8 planes still out there.

The last flights were still airborne Wednesday afternoon. A Southwest flight from San Jose to Houston’s William P. Hobby airport was scheduled to arrive around 6:27 p.m. CT, the final Max 8 flight for the airline.

Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard has denied the allegations made against him in a lawsuit filed byΒ Masin Elije.

Per TMZ Sports, Howard said he’s never met Elije and called the lawsuit a “money grab.”

“I don’t know this person, never seen him,” Howard said. “Any allegation said about me is false.”

Robert Littal of Black Sports Online reported Wednesday that Elije filed a civil lawsuit against the eight-time All-Star.Β

In aΒ series of tweetsΒ this past November, Elije accused Howard and his pastor, Calvin Simmons, of sexual harassment, threatening and manipulation.Β

Elije said he was in a relationship with Howard, who Elije said was cheating on him with a transgender woman. Elije also said Howard allegedly threatened to “beat the s–t out of” him unless he signed a non-disclosure agreement.Β

TMZ noted Elije’s lawsuit doesn’t specify what Howard, who is planning “legal action of his own”Β was trying to keep from being made public. The lawsuit does allege the NBA star madeΒ “threats on [Elije’s] life.”

As part of the lawsuit, Elije wants Howard to cover his legal costs.Β

Howard has appeared in only nine games for the Wizards this season. He’s been sidelined since Nov. 18 because of a lower back injury.Β
