Cher sings ‘I Got You Babe’ with her Broadway show cast on Fallon

It’s no mean feat playing a music legend in a Broadway show, but The Cher Show cast give it a red hot go.

However, Cher herself reminded us of the real deal when she joined Broadway’s Jarrod Spector and Micaela Diamond for a performance of her Sonny Bono duet “I Got You Babe” on The Tonight Show.

Honestly, Diamond and Spector do a killer job. But having the Goddess of Pop join the party to belt out her own classic 1965 track is a real treat — and one hell of a time warp.

Makes you want to watch Mamma Mia 2 again…

Jailed Reuters journalists honoured with Pulitzer Prize

Two jailed reporters for the Reuters news agency have won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for revealing the massacre of 10 Rohingya men by Buddhist villagers and Myanmar security forces.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who have been jailed for 490 days in Myanmar for their role in uncovering the killings, won the prestigious award for international reporting on Monday.

They were arrested in December 2017 and are serving a seven-year sentence for violating the country’s colonial Official Secrets Act.

“I’m thrilled that Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo and their colleagues have been recognised for their extraordinary, courageous coverage,” Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen J Adler said.

“I remain deeply distressed, however, that our brave reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are still behind bars.”

Thomson Reuters CEO Jim Smith said the news service “won’t be truly celebrating until Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are free”.

‘Game of Thrones’ hotline sees the cast answer all your dumb questions (sort of)

By Johnny Lieu

With so much to keep track of, we wish there was a Game of Thrones hotline for all our dumb questions about the show.

At $2.99 a minute, we wish we could ask Hodor what his HBO Go password is, tell Ramsay Bolton how much you hate him, and ask Davos Seaworth what happened to his, well, you’ll see.

Unfortunately it’s never going to happen, but at least Jimmy Kimmel Live! makes the imaginary “Game Of Phones” pretty funny.

The Los Angeles Clippers pulled off what may be the greatest comeback in NBA history given the talent on the other side and evened their first-round series with the Golden State Warriors at one game apiece.

Los Angeles erased a 31-point second-half deficit in Monday’s Game 2 at Oracle Arena and stunned the two-time defending champions with a 135-131 victory.

Landry Shamet drilled a go-ahead three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to complete the comeback, and Stephen Curry missed a three on the ensuing possession while Kevin Durant watched from the sideline after fouling out.

Lou Williams spearheaded the comeback with 36 points and 11 assists, while Montrezl Harrell (25 points and 10 rebounds) and Danilo Gallinari (24 points and six assists) provided support.

Clippers Teach Warriors Painful Lesson in Turning On and Off the Switch

It’s difficult to even fault the Warriors for playing with a lack of urgency in Monday’s game.

After all, they are the two-time defending champions who lifted three of the last four Larry O’Brien Trophies and won a record 73 games the one season they didn’t in that stretch. They have won a Game 7 in the Western Conference Finals and competed against one of the best players in league history in LeBron James in the NBA Finals.

Monday was just Game 2 of a first-round series against a team that has no business beating them.

Lesson learned.

The game took a backseat for a stretch in the first quarter when DeMarcus Cousins suffered a quadriceps injury chasing a loose ball. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN noted “there’s significant concern” the injury was a torn quadriceps even though he will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity.

Cousins’ absence was felt hard in the fourth quarter as Harrell dominated the paint and didn’t miss a single one of his nine field-goal attempts. His dunk over multiple defenders to cut the lead to three with just more than two minutes remaining was the first time it felt as if the Clippers were going to complete the comeback.

15 4th quarter points for Montrezl Harrell. That contract the Clips for last summer was I think the best deal signed the entire year in terms of bang for buck. Made no sense the Clips didn’t have to at least get to the mid-level.

Still, it appeared as if the injury was the only pain Golden State would feel when it jumped out to a 73-50 halftime lead with 17 assists on 23 made field goals.

A team that sported a net rating of 4.6 when Cousins was on the court and 7.0 when he was off it this season, per NBA.com, looked even better without its four-time All-Star down low in the first half. It turned to small-ball lineups and unleashed a barrage of three-pointers.

But Williams went into takeover mode in the second half, slashing through the lane for his own looks and facilitating whenever the Warriors were caught watching him. He was the best player on the floor against a team with at least three future Hall of Famers and led an 85-58 charge in the last two quarters.

While Los Angeles deserves all the credit in the world for the comeback, that is a score difference that simply wouldn’t have happened if the Warriors were fully engaged for 48 minutes.

Golden State didn’t have the mental toughness or second-half engagement level to deal with Patrick Beverley’s style as a pestering defender who isn’t afraid to talk regardless of the moment. Durant was ejected in Game 1 for getting involved with the pesky guard and then fouled out in Monday’s contest in large part due to offensive fouls as he pushed him away.

Durant also had nine turnovers in the face of the pressure defense.

Draymond Green eventually fouled Beverley out with a massive flop, but it was too late at that point. Beverley had successfully done just what he intended—bother the Warriors just enough to throw them off their game and start focusing on him instead of securing the 2-0 series lead.

While that was happening, Williams, Harrell and Gallinari chipped away enough to put the visitors in position to win down the stretch.

Golden State flipped the proverbial switch during its first-half dominance but never did again against a Clippers squad that has been nothing but heart all season. Any assumption they would go away after being blown out in the opening two quarters was wrong and didn’t take into account who they’ve been for months.

Sam Vecenie @Sam_Vecenie

The Clippers have a bunch of fighters, man. I love this team so much. They just scratch and claw for every inch on the floor.

Russillo @ryenarussillo

Well, that was weird. The Clippers are so tough. Doc is the best at getting his teams to believe when it seems delusional.

Los Angeles could have folded when it traded away its leading scorer in Tobias Harris but instead has played with an intensity the Warriors couldn’t match down the stretch. The champions have been on cruise control all season, while the Clippers have been fighting for their playoff lives and then seeding in the face of low expectations.

That is not to say the Warriors are suddenly going to lose this series. They are still far more talented and flashed just how dominant they can be in that first half, but they learned a painful lesson about not matching the intensity and desperation of their opponents in the postseason.

Even they can lose.

What’s Next?

The series shifts to Los Angeles for Thursday’s Game 3 and Sunday’s Game 4 at Staples Center.

India elections: Modi government’s economic report card

New Delhi, India – On April 6, speaking at the University of Delhi, India’s Finance Minister Arun Jaitley waxed eloquent about how the world’s most-populous democracy would become the third largest economy on the planet by 2030 after the United States and China.

By then, the size of India‘s economy would have more than trebled to $10 trillion from around $2.9 trillion at present, he said.

What was noteworthy was that Jaitley’s speech hardly dwelt on the performance of the government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the last five years, as India votes in the 17th general electionsbetween April 11 and May 19.

Votes will be counted on May 23 to determine whether the right-wing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Modi would be elected for a second term of five years.

The day after Jaitley’s speech, the BJP released its election manifesto that promised huge investments in India’s creaking infrastructure (in roads, railways, bridges and airports), the expansion of an income support scheme for farmers, a welfare board for traders, simplifying the goods and services (GST) regime, lower income taxes, setting up medical institutes and technology centres for small enterprises.

A few days earlier, the largest party in the opposition, the Indian National Congress had released its manifesto, the highlight of which was a grandiose scheme for income support for the poorest one-fifth of families in the country.

The BJP, which had promised between 10 million and 20 million jobs annually before the 2014 elections, has played down job creation.

Job crisis

Even spokespersons of the BJP acknowledge that much remains to be done to provide employment opportunities.

Demonetisation destroyed the country’s job-creating potential and badly hurt those employed in the informal sector

Abhijit Sen, economist

“We have to work harder to create job opportunities for the youth. We have so far paid attention to investments by government bodies and we now need to boost private investments and create consumer demand by increasing the liquidity in the system,” Gopal Agarwal, the party’s national spokesperson on economic issues, said.

India has seen low rate of inflation in the last five years [Francis Mascarenhas/Reuters]

Of late, there has been considerable controversy about data on jobs in India. Government has been accused of suppressing job data. Leaked data indicate that the unemployment rate in the country at 6.1 percent is the highest in 45 years and that an estimated 20 million young men had dropped out of the job market over the last five years.

This is a particularly important issue in a country in which half its population is below the age of 26.

Agarwal nevertheless believes that the Modi government should be credited with major achievements on the economic front.

“In 2014, when we came to power, the Indian economy was in bad shape – inflation was at double digits, the fiscal deficit was at 4.5 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), indicators of the ease of doing business were relatively low, the country’s foreign exchange reserves were not very comfortable and we were not getting much foreign direct investments. On all these counts, we are in a much better shape today,” he told Al Jazeera.

“… We have initiated technology-driven solutions to problems, encouraged start-ups by small entrepreneurs and taken steps to move people out of agriculture and the informal sector.”

Some economists concede that one of the positive features of the Indian economy in the last five years has been the low rate of inflation. But this, they argue is largely on account of low international crude oil prices resulting in huge windfall gains for the country.

Dependent on oil

India is dependent on imported crude oil to meet over 80 percent of its requirements. Oil imports comprise around a third of the country’s total import bill thus impacting the country’s external balance of payments as well as the rate of inflation.

“The performance of the government on the economic front has been pretty bad if you consider the fact that over the last five years, the country has benefitted from a massive windfall on account of low crude oil prices to the extent of not less than two percent of our GDP each year,” said Abhijit Sen, eminent economist and former member of the now-defunct Planning Commission.

We have to work harder to create job opportunities for the youth

Gopal Agarwal, the BJP spokesperson

He believes that low oil prices kept inflation under check, the external balance of payments under control and ensured that the quality of government finances – including the fiscal deficits of the state governments and the central government – did not deteriorate. “Under the circumstances, the rate of growth of GDP was creditable though not as good as the government is claiming,” he said.

Modi launched ‘Make in India’ campaign to make the country a manufacturing hub [Amit Dave/Reuters]

As world crude oil prices have firmed up over the last year or so, the inflation rate has inched up. High real rates of interest have squeezed corporate profits and suppressed consumer demand as well – sales of passenger cars and two-wheelers are down.

After coming to power, the Modi government launched a slew of welfare schemes, including a programme to give a free cooking gas cylinder to women in poor households and opening bank accounts to directly transfer the benefits of government subsidies to the underprivileged.

An “insolvency and bankruptcy code” was put in place to resolve problems related to financially stressed assets of firms leading to unpaid loans taken from banks.

GST

But the opposition has accused the Modi government of not doing enough to prevent high-profile businessmen from fleeing India after defaulting billions of dollars of bank loans.

The biggest “reform” measure of the government was the movement towards a unified Goods and Services Tax (GST) in July 2017 that subsumed India’s complicated (and messy) indirect taxes regime spread across 29 states and seven federally-administered regions.

The rolling out of the GST regime, touted by the government as a classic instance of “fiscal federalism,” however, has been stymied by poor planning and implementation besides an erratic internet infrastructure.

Arguably the more important reason why the beneficial impact of the rolling-out of the GST was not felt was on account of the unprecedented act of banning 86 percent of the currency in circulation in 2016.

Modi claimed that the shock decision would constrain the use of illegal money or black money – or the money that is not accounted for in government records – in the economy and check the use of fake currency notes by “terrorists”. Later, the government claimed that demonetisation, as the note ban was called, would usher in a “cash-less” or “less-cash” society.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the move as an act of “organised loot and legalised plunder”.

Demonetisation “destroyed the country’s job-creating potential and badly hurt those employed in the informal sector that accounts for over 90 percent of the country’s economy,” Sen, the economist, said.

Critics said that the credibility of the economic data put out has plummeted as government was accused of trying to manipulate it.

Farmers have staged protests as agriculture sector has performed poorly [Anushree Fadnavis/Daylife]

Economists like R Nagaraj, professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development research, Mumbai, claim that instead of a GDP growth of 8 percent and 8.2 percent in fiscal years (ending 31 March) 2017 and 2018 respectively, the “actual” numbers could be two percentage points lower.

Poor performance of the agricultural sector

Even if one accepts the figures put out by the government’s Central Statistics Office, the estimated rate of growth of GDP in fiscal year 2019 has been pegged down from 7.2 percent to 7 percent, the lowest in five years.

“Almost all data other than the GDP growth figures, including other items in the National Accounts Statistics, shows the economy has been doing poorly in the last five years,” said Surajit Mazumdar, an economist and professor at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University.

“Agriculture, manufacturing and construction, investment, foreign trade, bank credit, wages, government revenues – trends in all of these show clear signs of an extremely sluggish economy incapable of creating employment opportunities that so many desperately need,” he said.

Mazumdar contends that “this is not surprising given the fact that the Modi government has consistently emphasised fiscal consolidation and reduction of the deficit – which is more about the state withdrawing from the economy rather than doing something for the economy”.

One of the reasons for the sluggish rate of growth of the economy has been the poor performance of the agricultural sector. Both the BJP and the Congress have promised to implement schemes to provide a “minimum basic income” for farming families with small land holdings and low incomes.

What is acknowledged by all is that farming in the country has become extremely risky and unremunerative. Close to one out of two Indians depend on agriculture for their livelihood.

“Our performance on the agriculture front has also been pretty dismal with the rate of growth of crop output less than 1 percent per annum over the last five years,” Sen pointed out.

Farmers have come out in hundreds of thousands to march on the streets of the national capital, Delhi and the country’s commercial capital, Mumbai to draw attention to the dismal conditions under which they are eking out a livelihood.

Curiously, even as Modi has been emphasising nationalism and the country’s unity in campaign speeches, his political opponents – comprising a motley combination of regional political outfits and India’s “grand old party,” the Congress, which has become weaker than ever before – are emphasising on economic issues.

The Opposition has been hammering the incumbent regime for its failure to create jobs for the youth, making farming less risky, disrupting the economy by demonetisation, allowing bad loans of banks to balloon and increasing the gap between the rich and the poor.

Even if the number of income tax assesses went up after demonetisation, many economists believe the big-bang decision hurt the weakest sections of India’s population the most – women and children dependent on them, senior citizens, farmers, daily-wage labourers and small traders and shopkeepers.

Trevor Noah interviewing Stephen Colbert is as delightful as you’d expect

Stephen Colbert doesn’t seem to be too precious about his desk. The Late Show host handed the reins to his former boss Jon Stewart in Nov. 2018, and on Monday, Stewart’s successor had a turn.

The Daily Show‘s Trevor Noah interviewed Colbert on the quintessential elements of a late night show in the age of Trump — especially how they check in with the president’s latest antics on Twitter, or “the national nanny cam.”

But Noah also asked the hard industry questions, like whether Colbert thought he’d succeed when CBS selected him (the real him, not his Daily Show character) to replace David Letterman in 2014.

“Was there a point when you genuinely thought to yourself, ‘I’ve made the biggest mistake ever?’” Noah asked.

“This was one of the most agonising things I’ve ever done. I thought about that, I never thought about stopping,” Colbert said, nonetheless unpacking his fears about legacy and jumping into something new.

DeMarcus Cousins Suffers Injury, Warriors Reportedly Fear It’s a Torn Quad

Golden State Warriors star DeMarcus Cousins suffered a non-contact injury on Monday night against the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 2 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, there is “significant concern” Cousins tore his left quad, but the Warriors hope it’s just strained, adding he will have an MRI on his quad Tuesday.

Cousins was chasing after a loose ball when he fell to the court and immediately grabbed his left leg.

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

Boogie heads to the locker room after an apparent leg injury.

Hope the big fella is okay. https://t.co/tW2Yd4vdaR

He has had his share of ups and downs in his first season with the Warriors. The four-time All-Star missed the first 45 games while continuing to rehab from a torn Achilles he suffered in January 2018.

In 30 regular-season games, Cousins averaged 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He’s spent much of the year working his way back into game shape after missing so much time, and his three-point percentage (27.4) is his worst since the 2014-15 season.

The Warriors have been able to endure without Cousins for most of this season on the strength of their starting lineup. Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green have the team poised to make another deep playoff run.

Cousins’ size adds a missing element for the Warriors as they pursue their third straight NBA title. Head coach Steve Kerr has to exercise caution to ensure his star center is healthy for the remainder of the postseason.

Taiwan ‘threatened’ but not intimidated by China military drills

Taiwan is not intimidated by China’s military drills this week, its president said, after the latest Chinese military manoeuvres were denounced as “coercion” and a threat to stability in the region.

China’s People’s Liberation Army said its warships, bombers and reconnaissance aircraft conducted “necessary drills” around Taiwan on Monday, although it described them as routine.

Taiwan scrambled jets and ships to monitor the Chinese forces, its defence ministry said, accusing Beijing of “trying to change the status quo of the Taiwan Strait”.

On Tuesday, President Tsai Ing-wen said Taiwan was not intimidated by the drills.

“As you may be aware, China’s armed forces yesterday sent a large number of military aircraft and naval vessels into our vicinity. Their actions threaten Taiwan and other-like minded countries in the region,” said Tsai.

“These actions only serve to strengthen our resolve. Our military forces have the capacity, determination, and commitment to defend Taiwan and not allow coercion to dictate our own future.”

Tsai also said the US administration had notified Taipei of its third arms sale to Taiwan, the training of pilots at the Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

“It enhances their abilities to defend our air space. I want to express my appreciation to the US government for the announcement.”

The goal of the drills was to practise a “combined firepower assault” that included electronic jamming from aircraft under the protection of fighter jets, the People’s Liberation Army Daily reported on Tuesday.

Bombers “screamed” towards the area and carried out “sudden attacks” while warships occupied assault positions and conducted attacks on “enemy” fire points, the official paper of China’s military said.

The paper cited a Chinese military representative as saying the drills were annual, planned exercises that were “completely within the normal legal rights of a sovereign country”.

Meanwhile, Paul Ryan, former speaker of the US House of Representatives, said the US considers any military threat to Taiwan a concern and urged China to stop, saying the moves were counterproductive.

The United States has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help provide the island with the means to defend itself and is its main source of arms.

Game of Thrones has officially returned, with Bran Stark being a royal creep, Jon Snow learning home truths, and Deanerys possibly rethinking some incendiary knee-jerk actions.

But apart from the main narrative hijinks, the Season 8 premiere contained more than a few easter eggs — including a possible Ed Sheeran shoutout.

As EW noted, the first episode of the final season included two cheeky cameos from the stars of your other favourite binge-worthy TV shows: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney and Silicon Valley‘s Martin Starr.

There’s a scene in which a (finally) valorous Theon Greyjoy rescues his sister Queen Yara from capture by the eye-poppingly power hungry Euron Greyjoy. Aboard the ship Silence, moored in King’s Landing, there are several guards who meet their doom during the stealth rescue.

One casualty is played by Starr, who plays the apathetic Bertram Gilfoyle in Silicon Valley

Another of these guards, who takes an arrow through the back of the head and out the eye, is played by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and co-creator McElhenney, who posted a delightfully disturbing Instagram of his character.

“Don’t blink,” reads the caption.

As EW points out, McElhenney goes way back with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who actually wrote an episode for Season 9 of Sunny in 2013.

Both McElhenney and Starr mulled over their cameos in a behind-the-scenes short.

“They gouged my eye out. They gouged my fucking eye out,” said McElhenney. “They can put it back in, right? Right? Benioff told me they would.”

Wouldn’t bet on it.

Only a week after K-pop queens Blackpink smashed records on YouTube, BTS has overtaken them.

The video for the band’s latest earworm, “Boy With Luv,” which features singer Halsey, is the most viewed music video debut in YouTube history, a company spokesperson confirmed to Mashable.

The pastel colour-heavy video, which debuted on Apr. 14, earned 74.6 million views in its first 24 hours. It eclipses the record previously set by Blackpink for “Kill This Love,” which had 56.7 million views within a day — this surpassed Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next,” at 55.4 million one-day views.

“Boy With Luv” is also the fastest music video to hit 100 million views, reaching the milestone in under 2 days. It’s a record also previously set by Blackpink.

The YouTube records cap off a big week for BTS, with the release of their EP Map of the Soul: Persona, plus a highly-coveted appearance on Saturday Night Live.

BTS are also set to perform alongside Halsey at the Billboard Music Awards on May 1, and gathering from their previous appearances at award shows, it’s going to be another big moment for a band who show no signs of stopping.
