Feast your eyes on this spectacular Hubble photo of a spiral galaxy

The Hubble telescope has captured a dazzling new photograph of a spiral galaxy, NGC 2903.

NGC 2903 is part of the constellation Leo, located roughly 30 million light-years from Earth. NASA used the powerful orbital telescope to explore it along with over 100 other disc galaxies in the region.

Spiral galaxies comprise the majority of galaxies in space at over 75 percent. Our own Milky Way galaxy was thought to be one until the 1960s, when it was reclassified as a barred spiral (a spiral galaxy with a distinct center bar in addition to spiral arms). Spiral galaxies’ arms are full of stars (and solar systems) as well as cosmic dust and gas bursts.

NASA has a particular fascination with black holes at the moment, and spiral galaxies often contain singularities — another word for “black hole” — somewhere near the center. Hubble’s surveys of disc galaxies aim to explore the relationship between these black holes and their local galaxies.

Algeria: Bouteflika’s brother, intelligence chiefs arrested

Algerian police have arrested former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s youngest brother alongside two former intelligence chiefs, according to local media.

Said Bouteflika and Generals Bachir Athmane Tartag and Mohamed Mediene were taken into custody on Saturday, reported Ennahar TV.

The younger Bouteflika, who served as advisor to the president for more than a decade, is seen by many as having taken de facto control of the North African state, after his brother suffered a crippling stroke in 2013.

Massive ongoing protests calling for a radical change pushed the ailing president to resign on April 2, but demonstrators continue to demand the removal of all those linked to the former administration.

Abdelkader Bensalah, the former head of the Senate, is currently serving as interim president until an election scheduled for July 4.

OnePlus 7 ad drops the phone in water, but you still shouldn’t

A new advertisement for the OnePlus 7 series smartphone suggests that you can just drop the phone in a bucket of water and it’ll be fine – but OnePlus also wants you to know that’s not true.

The embellishment made for a striking visual, at least. In the ad, OnePlus declares: “Water resistant ratings for phones cost you money. We bought something less expensive instead.”

That “something” is a bucket full of water, into which the OnePlus 7 is then gracefully dropped.

SEE ALSO: OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro leaks may have just revealed everything about the phones

That’s a real mic-drop declaration for a smartphone provider to make (a phone-drop, if you will), but what it implies is that OnePlus 7 hasn’t undergone its formal IP certification for water resistance. Indeed, the text immediately following says: “Water resistant under optimal test conditions. OnePlus makes no guarantees regarding water/liquid resistance.”

An IP rating doesn’t guarantee a phone’s water resistance, but it does provide peace of mind for many customers and is built into the price of a phone. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei posted in the forums, reinforcing the company’s commitment to water resistance and defending the “relatable video.”

“This is not a bucket challenge, and we certainly don’t want all of you to try to drop your OnePlus 7 Pro in a bucket,” he added. “And just like other smartphone brands that do IP classify their devices, our warranty does not cover water damage.”

The Verge notes that there are existing videos of OnePlus phones surviving brief altercations with water, but that still doesn’t translate to a safe dunking.

The OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro will be officially revealed on May 14.

Daniel Jones: Goal Is to Win ‘Multiple Super Bowls’ with Giants Like Eli Manning

New York Giants 2019 first-round pick Daniel Jones is setting the bar high for his NFL career.

Jones told reporters Friday that he is looking to follow in the footsteps of Giants starting quarterback Eli Manning by bringing championships back to New York: “I think the goal is certainly to win Super Bowls. There’s no doubt about it, that the goal, to win multiple Super Bowls, like Eli has. I’m looking forward to that.”

New York selected Jones sixth overall out of Duke, which raised eyebrows and drew criticism among pundits and fans alike.

The Giants could have taken Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins off a 50-touchdown season, but Haskins went to the rival Washington Redskins at No. 15 instead. New York also could have had Kentucky pass-rusher Josh Allen after he recorded 17 sacks and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year, but he was taken seventh by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jones’ college career left something to be desired, as his most productive season (2018) saw him complete 60.5 percent of his passes for 2,674 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing for 319 yards and three scores.

Those numbers don’t scream “first-round pick,” but Jones knows it is up to him to change the perception of him: “It’s my job to make people believe in me. I understand that. There is a lot of work to do, and I’m excited to do it.”

It is easy to draw parallels between Jones and Manning since they have a similar frame and were both developed by current Duke head coach and former Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe in college.

The biggest difference is that Manning was viewed as an elite player when he entered the draft, while opinions varied on Jones; there was no consensus that he should even be a first-round pick, let alone sixth overall.

Jones is set to join a Giants team that has just eight wins combined over the past two seasons, but he will have an opportunity to learn behind Manning. Once he takes over the reins, he will have the benefit of Saquon Barkley leading the running game, which could give him a better chance to succeed than most anticipate.

‘Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker’ trailer gets classic 16-bit treatment

The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer might give you chills in any form. A new 16-bit version from John Stratman echoes the style of the classic Super Star Wars SNES game, with pixellated animation capturing the movie scenes and chiptune takes on John Williams’ score.

Along with the Emperor’s newly digitized cackle, multiple jaw-drop moments from the trailer hit the same dramatic tone in 16-bit animation. Our new heroes standing before the remnants of the Death Star, for instance, reinforces the importance of Rey’s journey and the need for good to triumph over evil.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters Dec. 20.

Tesla emailed its employees on Thursday to caution them against leaking company information, especially to the press.

The email, which was leaked to the press, ostensibly pits Tesla and its employees against “outsiders” and those who will “do anything to see us fail.”

SEE ALSO: Tesla’s self-driving ‘brain’ hit with serious Trump administration tariff

“As a result of our success, we will continue to see an interest from people who will do anything to see us fail,” the Tesla email reads. “This includes people who are actively seeking proprietary information for their own gain, targeting Tesla employees through personal networks or on social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.”

In the past, information leaks have not led to the kindest press for Tesla, including exposure of product issues and tenuous business relationships. The email details almost half a dozen examples of recent confidentiality breaches and the actions Tesla took against those employees.

“Tesla will take action against those who improperly leak proprietary business information or violate the non-disclosure obligations to which we all agreed,” it continues. “This includes termination of employment, claims for damages, and even criminal charges.”

It goes on to invoke employees’ confidentiality agreements and to offer resources for those who “may benefit from training or a more complete understanding of how to protect our intellectual property and confidential business information.”

You can read the full email over at CNBC.

Venezuela’s Juan Guaido asks supporters to rally military

Opposition leader Juan Guaido will make a fresh bid on Saturday to rally Venezuela‘s armed forces behind him calling on his supporters to march to military bases and barracks.

The protest call by the head of the National Assembly legislature – who is recognised as interim president by more than 50 countries – comes just days after he urged the military to rise up against the socialist president.

“Peacefully, civically … we are going to deliver a simple document, a proclamation to the Armed Forces to listen to the Venezuelan call, that a rapid transition is possible to produce free elections,” Guaido told a press conference in Caracas on Friday.

“The call is to add and not to confront, to ask the military to be on the side of the constitution,” he said on Twitter.

¡Calle permanente y sostenida!

Mañana a las 10:00 am, todo el país se moviliza en paz a las principales unidades militares. El llamado es a sumar y no enfrentar, a que se pongan del lado de la constitución.

Anunciaremos los puntos en @Presidencia_VE. #VzlaEnPieDeLucha

— Juan Guaidó (@jguaido) May 3, 2019

A small group of military personnel responded to Guaido’s call to join him on Tuesday, but the effort petered out, triggering two days of protests against the government in which four people were killed and several hundred injured.

Military supports Maduro

Also on Tuesday, Leopoldo Lopez, a politician and Guaido’s mentor who was arrested during a protest movement in 2014 and transferred to house arrest in 2017, appeared together with Guaido and dozens of soldiers after escaping his home and before seeking refuge at the Spanish ambassador’s residence.

Venezuela’s military has since reiterated its support for the government, and President Maduro is standing his ground.

“Do not come to buy us with a dishonest offer, as if we do not have dignity,” Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino said.

The country’s attorney general Tarek William Saab said on Friday that 18 arrest warrants had been issued for “civilian and military conspirators” following the failed uprising, with lieutenant colonels among the uniformed personnel being sought.

However, analysts say the actions of the military reveal the uncertainty of the current situation.

“What happened on April 30, displays the fragility of the system at this moment,” Ramon Pinango, a Venezuelan sociologist told Al Jazeera.

“How is it possible that Leopoldo Lopez was under house arrest, with officers in front of his house, and he was able to walk out, and be in the streets for a good part of the day?” he added.

Tensions in Venezuela have soared since Guaido invoked the Constitution to declare himself acting president on January 23, claiming Maduro’s re-election last year was illegitimate.

The standoff has drawn in major world powers, with the US throwing its support behind Guaido and Russia and China backing Maduro.

The United States has imposed tough sanctions and President Donald Trump has refused to take the threat of military action off the table, in an intensifying campaign to drive Maduro out.

But Trump adopted a strikingly conciliatory tone after a more-than-hour-long conversation with Vladimir Putin on the Venezuela crisis, describing the Friday talks with his Russian counterpart as “very positive”.

“He is not looking at all to get involved in Venezuela other than he’d like to see something positive happen for Venezuela,” Trump said of Putin.

“And I feel the same way. We want to get some humanitarian aid. Right now people are starving.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to hold talks with his Venezuelan counterpart, Jorge Arreaza, in Moscow on Sunday.

‘Interference in internal affairs’

Venezuela has suffered five years of recession marked by shortages of basic necessities as well as failing public services, including water, electricity and transport.

Trump’s tone came in stark contrast to that of his top advisers, in particular, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who charged this week that Maduro had been poised to flee to Cuba, but was talked out of it by the Russians.

US-Russian tensions have spiked over the months-long standoff in Venezuela, and the Kremlin’s assessment of the Trump-Putin call differed substantially from that coming from the White House.

“Interference in internal affairs, attempts to change the leadership in Caracas through force, undermine the prospects for a peaceful settlement of the conflict,” said a Russian statement.

“Vladimir Putin stated that only the Venezuelan people have the right to decide the future of their country,” it added.

The US is insisting Maduro’s days are numbered, but experts say its options for breaking the stalemate are limited, and that Washington may have overestimated the opposition leader’s strength.

Robert Downey Jr. hosted a star-studded lunch featuring Brie Larson, Zoe Saldana, and more

By Harry Hill

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

I don’t think I’ve ever had this much FOMO about a lunch.

As the Avengers: Endgame hubbub continues to keep the internet ablaze, the stars of the record-breaking film are stoking the coals with even more content. Robert Downey Jr. shared a couple of photos from a very fun lunch on his Instagram earlier this week.

SEE ALSO: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ promises a more inclusive future for Marvel

As a caption, Downey Jr. wrote, “#tbt #throwback#flashback to the #Women of @marvelstudios #mcu lunch I had the pleasure of hosting….” He included two photos, though he’s only in the first one.

The star-studded on-set picnic featured a bounty of Downey Jr.’s female costars, including Brie Larson, Elizabeth Olsen, Zoe Saldana, Evangeline Lily, Danai Gurira, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Letitia Wright, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Some of Endgame actresses even showed up in costume, making the gathering a sight to behold.

From what we can see, the lunch spread included La Croix and an assortment of vegetables. So that’s what superheroes eat!

The post has garnered mass Insta-acclaim, with over 11 million likes and more than 84k comments. That just goes to show that we’ll tune in to the Endgame cast whether they’re fighting Thanos or just sipping on sparkling water.
