Netflix’s ‘The Last Summer’ doesn’t understand teenagers: Review

The following review of The Last Summer is spoiler-free.

From Sex Education to American Vandal, Netflix knows how to slay a Gen-Z narrative. So, what’s up with The Last Summer

Out now, the new teen rom-com has all the bones of a decent high school drama. Teeming with emerging Hollywood stars and topically tied to the approaching summer vacation, The Last Summer chronicles a senior class’s final months together before heading off to college.

It’s the perfect stage for a farewell to adolescence, tale of self-discovery, or story of seasonal romance — all narratives The Last Summer tackles in its many interwoven plots, and then pumps full of characters more unbelievable than the cancellation of Santa Clarita Diet

SEE ALSO: These are the Netflix shows Gen-Z thinks actually represent them

Starring Riverdale‘s KJ Apa, The Fosters‘ Maia Mitchell, and many others, The Last Summer begins by making the traditional YA filmmaking mistakes we’ve come to expect. The “teenage” cast shares an average age of 24, their wardrobes are more expensive than your car, their cars cost more than a typical annual salary, and absolutely no one knows how to text.

It’s classic “high school, but make it Hollywood” type stuff — annoying, yet forgivable. Then, things get baffling.

In its nearly two-hour runtime, The Last Summer does not create a single passable, adolescent character, managing to somehow both overshoot and undershoot the maturity of every teen in their story.

On the one end of the spectrum, you have the 30 somethings, alleged teens who speak and act as if they’ve been deadened by years of layoffs, family troubles, and mounting debt. In all but appearance, these characters are the opposite of youthful.

An example: The first major couple The Last Summer introduces, a pair of high school sweethearts destined for different universities, break up with each other before the summer begins so they’ll have time to move on. A totally reasonable, and believable teen move.

But then, they woodenly negotiate the terms of their parting — without any hint of actual affection for each other, and certainly no tears — ending their two-year long romance with a handshake. (Yes, a handshake.)

More the finale to a successful corporate merger than a portrayal of perilous teen love, this awkward exchange makes it nearly impossible to care about their broken romance for the remainder of the film.

On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got your sixth graders, shallow characters written with not only limited maturity, but the mental capacity of single-celled organisms.

Two examples here: (1) The boy who keeps a deeply problematic “sexual wish list” of female classmates he’d like to bed before heading off for higher education and (2) the girl who proudly boasts of her fondness for her Junior Lit class by bellowing “I’m always liiiiit” at the top of her lungs, and frequently conveys her need for some silicone “double-Ds.”

It’s uh… something? But hardly an accurate representation of what most teenagers are like. Devoid of any saving grace, you can forget about getting invested in these types.

The only characters I did manage to care about? Reece and Chad. Played by Mario Revolori and Jacob McCarthy, these morons are an absolute delight. They aren’t well-written as teenagers, but their Superbad-like plot is inventive and fun. I won’t give anything away, but if you absolutely must watch this movie, take time to appreciate these guys.

All in all, The Last Summer manages a few moments of reprieve, but ultimately fails to put the teen in its teen movie. It’s not the worst addition to the YA genre, but it certainly doesn’t deserve to join  Netflix’s catalogue of typically phenomenal teen content.

The Last Summer is out on Netflix now

‘Borderlands 3’ looks promising but needless CEO drama could kill it

The Borderlands 3 reveal on May 1 was almost great, if not for all the drama.

It was looking good at first for developer Gearbox Software. Despite the questionable choice to have embattled studio founder and CEO Randy Pitchford serve as the hype man on stage, the game does a fine job of making a case for its own existence.

Not that it’s a giant leap forward. This series has been largely dormant for five years. But with all the industry shifts lately toward more fully online “games-as-a-service” (think Destiny), Gearbox’s pitch of “more Borderlands, with cool improvements” is a tantalizing proposition.

The new game will stick with the first-person space Diablo vibe that’s defined the series since the very first release. The action plays out across a wider range of planets, but the heart of the game still revolves around amassing a stockpile of randomly generated guns that often perform in unexpected and wild ways.

The Borderlands 3 reveal was almost great, if not for all the drama.

At one point during the reveal presentation, Pitchford’s case for Borderlands 3 turned to the ways the game would — and wouldn’t — be monetized. This is where the trouble all started, though it wasn’t clear at that moment.

“We’re gonna do some kickass campaign DLC [or downloadable content] and I’m sure we’re gonna do all kinds of fun customizations like heads and skins [for your characters] but we’re not doing any of that free-to-play junk; there’s not going to be any microtransactions, there’s not gonna be any of that nonsense,” he said at around the 55-minute mark of the live stream

Let’s unpack that real quick. Borderlands has always expanded after release with DLC add-ons to the story that you could buy. Starting in Borderlands 2, there were also character heads and skins you could spend much smaller amounts of money on to customize your in-game appearance. They were popular, and reportedly a valuable source of income for Gearbox and publisher 2K in the game’s post-release life.

They were also, definitively, microstransactions. Pitchford misspoke when he said “there’s not going to be any microtransactions.” That’s fine, these things happen.

The real trouble came up when Game Informer published a story zeroing in on this error. Pitchford had said one thing, but 2K had subsequently confirmed that, yes, just as in past games players would be able to buy character skins. And Pitchford responded, clearly enraged.

Why you guys would fuck me on this is beyond me… thanks a lot.

    — Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) May 1, 2019

Pitchford is fundamentally misunderstanding the role of the press in his response. He’s treating Game Informer like some kind of ally in spreading his/Gearbox’s message, when in fact the magazine’s writers work instead to inform their readers — and that includes answering questions when they come up.

Pitchford’s statement about Borderlands 3 including “heads and skins” but not having any microtransactions led to the natural question: does that mean customization items are all free? Any longtime fan can assume they’re not because such items were purchasable in past games, but Game Informer‘s writer did their job and got 2K to confirm it.

Rather than accepting the fact that he himself misspoke, Pitchford accused Game Informer of trying to “fuck” him over. He called the article’s reasonably asked and answered question “clickbait” and suggested his wording during the presentation was clear.

The episode was, to put it mildly, a bad look.

A social media blow-up quickly ensued. Borderlands fans started coming after Pitchford to take issue with his overreaction. He doubled down on defending himself and kept on going, even as people threw his own direct quotes right back at him. You can see some of his carrying on in responses on the above Game Informer tweet and even more in Pitchford’s subsequent Twitter replies.

The episode was, to put it mildly, a bad look. Microtransactions gaffe aside, Gearbox’s first dive into Borderlands 3 gameplay went well. It looks like a promising crowd-pleaser for fans that have been waiting five years for a sequel. But in responding the way he did on social media, Pitchford effectively shifted focus away from the game and on to his behavior.

    Then things got weirder.

Someone asked David Eddings — a former Gearbox executive who also happened to be the voice of Borderlands’ most popular character, Claptrap — if he was returning in Borderlands 3. He said no. He hadn’t been paid for doing the role previously, probably because he was already a Gearbox employee. But Eddings, who has since moved on, said he wanted money in exchange for the work of voicing Claptrap.

No. For the first time, I insisted on getting paid for my performance and all of a sudden they couldn’t afford me. Now I’m not telling them how to run their business but maybe next time they should put the $12M payment from 2K in the Gearbox bank account instead. Just sayin’…

    — David Eddings (@davideddings) May 2, 2019

(The “$12M payment” comment is a snarky reference to Pitchford’s aforementioned legal troubles. You can read more about that at the link up top, but tl;dr: there’s an allegation that he received a “secret” $12 million bonus some years ago that should have gone to Gearbox as a whole.)

Pitchford has a different view of things. When a Twitter user called him on Eddings not returning, the Gearbox CEO suggested that his former exec had in fact been given an offer, and that he’d turned it down.

Mr. Eddings was paid very handsomely during his employment. After his employment he was made a relatively generous offer to reprise the role. Unfortunately, he turned that opportunity down.

    — Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) May 3, 2019

That was echoed in a statement Gearbox provided to IGN.

Gearbox works to treat and compensate all voice actors at industry standards. We offer the opportunity for salaried employees to voice characters in the game, but is not a mandatory responsibility to their job requirements.

In this particular case, now that he was no longer an employee, we offered him an industry standard rate, but were not able to reach an agreement. We are confident and happy with Jim Foronda as the voice of Claptrap, and we are confident our fans will be too.

It would be easy to write this off as a case of “he said-he said” under normal circumstances. Pitchford’s and Eddings’ words aren’t directly at odds; rather, it sounds like Eddings (who, it’s worth noting, helped to popularize Claptrap) wanted some amount of money beyond what Gearbox was willing to pay.

There’s just one problem: this isn’t the only voice actor drama connected to Borderlands 3. Back in April, Pitchford had said that Troy Baker — a popular voice actor who lent his talents to the character of Rhys in Telltale Games’ spin-off, Tales from the Borderlands — had turned down an offer to appear in the sequel.

You’ll have to ask Troy. I was told by the audio director that he turned it down. Fortunately, with how Rhys appears in the game, I don’t think it actually matters at all. You’ll see for yourself when the game comes out and you may disagree with me on that or not.

    — Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) April 10, 2019

Baker’s own account is quite different. In a subsequent video interview with OnlySP, he points out that he wanted to return for Borderlands 3 but Gearbox had decided against it. And that maybe Pitchford knew about it, but maybe he didn’t.

“I think it’s interesting that Randy Pitchford tweeted out that I turned it down, and then he said he heard that I turned it down,” Baker said. “So maybe… I would fact check before I tweeted out to the internet.”

As you can see, there’s been a whole lot of drama here and none of it is very clear. Mistakes were made with the reveal and there’s at least some sign of disgruntlement from former Borderlands voice actors, but there are two sides to every story. And while Pitchford’s legal drama may be alarming, it remains unresolved — and therefore unproven.

The biggest headlines coming out of that reveal focused on Pitchford and his behavior.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem. Look at the situation like this: Gearbox lifted the lid on Borderlands 3 after five years of silence. It should have been a triumphant moment for that entire team, especially with the game apparently making fans excited.

Instead, the biggest headlines coming out of that reveal event focused on Pitchford and his behavior. And it’s not because the media is trying to “fuck” him. He created these problems for himself — and unfortunately, for his entire team — by not explaining things clearly enough. Then, when members of the press did their due diligence in trying to clear up the confusion, he flew off the handle.

It looked bad, and it made Pitchford a difficult source to trust as the voice actor stories started rolling around. (Yes, the Baker story is technically from April, but it picked up steam again after what happened.)

Speaking as a longtime fan, I hope Gearbox can bounce back from this setback and deliver a game that makes everyone happy. But I also think Pitchford’s behavior has made it clear that the studio is going to continue to struggle with getting the message out while he’s the main Borderlands 3 hype man.

The next big test is E3 2019, which kicks off in mid-June. Will Pitchford show up once again and make a scene? Hopefully, for the sake of every talented creator at Gearbox, the answer is no.

Mo Salah Stretchered off After Suffering Apparent Head Injury vs. Newcastle

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was stretchered off during the Reds’ 3-2 win over Newcastle United on Saturday with an apparent head injury:

Mo Salah went off with a head injury 🙏🤕 https://t.co/ysEEQvIgDX

The Egypt international went down after a heavy collision with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the 68th minute at St James’ Park with the score at 2-2. He was replaced by Divock Origi.

Carl Markham at the Press Association offered some more details:

    Carl Markham @carlmarkham

.@MoSalah caught a nasty blow to the head as Dubravka came for a cross and hit him with his hip. Been down a long time, not looking good.

The news will be a huge blow to Liverpool at a vital part of the season. Salah had earlier scored his 22nd Premier League goal of the season with the Reds needing a win to go above Manchester City in the title race:

Mo Salah puts Liverpool back in front 👑 https://t.co/QOkAf6u1Aq

Liverpool play their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

However, before then they take on Barcelona in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final trailing 3-0 from the first leg at the Camp Nou.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has already said he is likely to be without Firmino for the second leg against Barcelona, according to Rory O’Callaghan at Sky Sports News.

The Reds will want to have the Egypt international available, as he has been the team’s most productive forward since he returned to England last season.

Formerly of Chelsea, he developed into a world-class forward at AS Roma and powered the Reds to last year’s UEFA Champions League final.

He’s a crucial part of the attacking trident alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, and with limited depth available behind Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, his loss is a major blow.

Daniel Sturridge has flashed his potential but has had plenty of injury troubles himself, and he lacks the versatility that makes Salah such a special player. Origi helped give Liverpool the lead in the 86th minute, jumping with Jamaal Lascelles as the ball deflected in for a dramatic late goal.

Iran sentences president’s brother to prison for corruption

Hossein Fereydoun was handed an unspecified prison term for corruption [File: Atta Kenare/ AFP]

A court in Iran has sentenced President Hassan Rouhani‘s younger brother to an unspecified jail term in a corruption case that supporters of the Iranian leader allege is politically motivated.

Hossein Fereydoun, who is also a close confidante of the president, has vowed to appeal the sentence, local media reported on Saturday.

“This person [Hossein Fereydoun] was found not guilty on some charges, while he was sentenced to prison on other accusations,” Hamidreza Hosseini, a judiciary official, was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

The trial of Fereydoun, along with six co-defendants, began in February without the judiciary giving details of the charges.

He had initially been held in 2017, on financial crime charges, before being released on bail.

Fereydoun, responding to the court’s decision on Saturday, said he rejected the ruling.

“I strongly and categorically reject allegations against me in the court and some of the media, and I’m protesting,” he was quoted as saying by the semi-official news agency ISNA.

Fereydoun was a senior diplomat who took part in talks that led to the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

Some supporters of Rouhani, who was born Hassan Fereydoun before adopting his new surname, view the charges against his brother as a move by the judiciary to discredit the president.

The judiciary has denied having any political motivation in cases it tries.

Raptors’ Pascal Siakam Doubtful for Game 4 vs. 76ers with Calf Contusion Injury

    Chris Szagola/Associated Press

The Toronto Raptors could be without one of their top players, forward Pascal Siakam, against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series Sunday.

According to Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun, the Raptors have listed Siakam as doubtful with a calf contusion.

In Thursday’s 116-95 Game 3 loss to Philly, Siakam played 34 minutes and finished with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting.

The Raptors face a 2-1 deficit in the series and need a road win in Game 4 to avoid being pushed to the brink of elimination.

Per TSN’s Josh Lewenberg, Siakam said he was unsure how he injured his calf and called it “very sore and a little swollen.”

Siakam also told Lewenberg that he will test the calf during Saturday’s practice and Sunday morning while continuing to receive treatment.

The 25-year-old Siakam could have suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of Toronto’s Game 3 loss when he was called for a flagrant foul for tripping Sixers center Joel Embiid with his right leg:

    Josh Lewenberg @JLew1050

Do you know how you got hurt?
Siakam: “No… There was a lot of contact during the game so I don’t know exactly when it happened.”
It was the same leg you used to trip Embiid, right?
Siakam: “Uh, yeah. I think so.”

Siakam is the most likely candidate to be named the NBA‘s Most Improved Player this season, as he averaged 16.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists after putting up just 7.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game last season.

As good as he was during the regular season, Siakam has been even more dominant in the playoffs with averages of 22.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest.

If Siakam can’t go in Game 4, Toronto will be without one of its most explosive athletes and versatile defenders, which will put even more pressure on superstar Kawhi Leonard to perform.

It would likely also result in Serge Ibaka‘s insertion into the starting lineup alongside Marc Gasol, which is a setup that could give Philadelphia some trouble in terms of matching the Raptors’ size inside.

Toronto could also go small by playing Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet together more often, although they combined to go just 2-of-17 from the field in Game 3.

Dozens killed as Russian, Syrian air attacks in Idlib intensify

Syrian government forces and their Russian allies continue their air offensive on the country’s rebel-held northwest for a fifth consecutive day in a widening campaign, killing and wounding dozens and forcing thousands to flee their homes.

After an overnight lull, government and Russian warplanes escalated bombings on Saturday hitting rebel areas in Idlib and the neighbouring province of Hama, aid workers in the area said.

On Saturday, government forces were sending new reinforcements towards Idlib, including tanks, armoured personnel carriers and hundreds of troops.

The official SANA news agency said the army had destroyed “jihadist” positions in southern Idlib and nearby Hama province in response to what it called repeated violations of a de-escalation agreement.

But the UN humanitarian coordinator said schools, health facilities and residential areas have been hit and the government forces are employing the worst barrel bombing in at least 15 months.

Barrel bombs are containers packed with explosives dropped from helicopters.

“Now, the bombing has returned and is much heavier and has spread very widely in Jabal al-Zawiya and rural northern Hama,” Ahmad al-Dbis, safety and security manager for the US-based Union of Medical Care and Relief Organisations (UOSSM), told Reuters News Agency.

“The planes are not stopping at all and the bombing is continuing in a very big way like yesterday and worse,” al-Dbis added.

The recent upsurge in violence is the most serious in Idlib since Russia and Turkey negotiated a ceasefire in September.

The shaky truce had averted a major government offensive on the last rebel stronghold in Syria.

The Syrian Civil Defence, a rescue service operating in rebel-held areas, said it had recorded more than 30 deaths in the last few days.

Dbis said the number of dead was at least 50 while the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which monitors the war, said at least 67 people had been killed.

    Medical facilities bombed

Mustafa al-Haj Yousef, the civil defence director for Idlib, said more than 130,000 people had fled towards more secure areas, adding: “Civil defence centres have been targeted directly.”

UOSSM says four medical facilities have been bombed.

Over the past weeks, government forces have bombarded rebel-held areas while al-Qaeda-linked fighters attacked army positions around Idlib killing more than two dozen troops and pro-government gunmen over the past week, according to the AP news agency.

Idlib is the last major area of Syria still in rebel hands after a string of government offensives backed by Russian air power since 2015 turned the tables in a protracted civil war.

President Bashar al-Assad has regained control over most of the country, with the northeast held by Kurdish groups backed by the United States.

Idlib is held by an array of rebel groups, including the powerful Hay’et Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a coalition of armed groups including those formerly affiliated with al-Qaeda.

Turkey, which has supported the rebels and has troops to monitor the truce, has been negotiating with Moscow to halt the air attacks with little success.

Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi will not run for reelection next year, the four-term Republican senator said on Saturday.

The 75-year-old Senate Budget Committee chairman announced his retirement in Gillette, Wyo., where he used to be mayor. The low-key Wyomingite said he wants to focus on budget reform.

“I don’t want to be burdened by the distractions of another campaign,” Enzi said, according to the Casper Tribune.

Senate Republicans have been closely watching Enzi, figuring he may decide to call it quits after 24 years in the Senate, but most were unaware of his weekend plans. Enzi’s office did not respond to requests for comment on Saturday morning ahead of the announcement.

Enzi is among the least flashy personalities in the Capitol. He often literally keeps his head down, immersed in either thought or reading, typically wielding an e-reader device.

He frequently ignores reporters to go about his day, which is likely focused on cutting spending and balancing the budget. He posts often about the “penny plan,” which would reduce spending by 1 percent each year. Enzi is term-limited from serving as budget chairman after next year.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who threatened Enzi with a primary challenge in 2014, praised him on Saturday for “fighting for a smaller, less obstructive, and more efficient federal government that would allow people to grow and thrive.” Her statement did not address whether she will run to succeed Enzi.

The Senate field is likely to be frozen until Cheney — already a statewide elected official — makes a decision. What she decides to do has outsized impact on House Republican politics, as well. If she runs for the Senate, it will remove a potential threat to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.). If she decides to stay in the House, it’s a sign she is interested in moving up in House Republican leadership in the coming years.

Enzi’s seat is highly likely to remain in Republican hands. Speculation on his replacement will center on Cheney, who eventually backed off challenging Enzi 2014. Former Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead would also be a formidable candidate. If neither runs, the state’s Republicans could be looking at a crowded primary for the safe GOP seat.

Enzi’s only whiff of recent controversy was a 2017 comment, in which he observed: “I know a guy that wears a tutu and goes to the bars on Friday night and is always surprised that he gets in fights. Well, he kind of asks for it a little bit.” He quickly apologized.

While a fiscal conservative, Enzi has taken a couple of positions that defied conservative orthodoxy. He supported legislation that would allow states to charge a sales tax that divided Republicans and also has backed raising the federal gas tax in the past.

But Enzi has been a reliable Republican vote and almost never challenges party leaders publicly. He beat out former Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) for the Budget Committee chairmanship in 2014.

“Mike Enzi’s character, courage and credibility have made him a respected moral leader in the U.S. Senate. In four terms in the Senate he has never wavered in his commitment to God, family or Wyoming,” said Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the No. 3 GOP leader, who is now in line to be the senior senator from the state.

Gale McGee was the last Democrat to represent Wyoming in the Senate. He retired in 1976.
