Watch Michelle Obama’s eyebrows as she reveals that Melania Trump ignored her offer for advice

The complicated relationship between former First Lady Michelle Obama and current First Lady Melania Trump got another wrinkle on Monday.

Michelle Obama, during an interview with ABC to promote her upcoming memoir Becoming, talked about how Laura Bush had reached out to her before she became First Lady in 2008. Michelle extended the same offer to Melania after Donald Trump was elected, but when asked by Robin Roberts if Melania had accepted, Michelle replied only, “No, no she hasn’t.”

Obama’s little eyebrow raise at the end says all you need to know about the way the rest of that story goes.

Of course, Michelle is remembered for the legendary side-eye she delivered at Trump’s inauguration, and she admits in Becoming that, on that dreary day, “I made my own optic adjustment. I stopped even trying to smile.”

This pairs well with the other tidbit about the Trump-Obama beef that we already knew: That Michelle has understandably said she’d “never forgive” Donald Trump for his role in spreading and weaponizing his birther conspiracy theory against her husband.

The one remaining thing we need to learn is Michelle’s thoughts on that time Melania straight-up plagiarized one of her speeches during the 2016 Republican National Convention. (And that was not even the only time Melania has ripped off an Obama production.)

This feud could really beat any beef that Drake is a part of.

AP College Basketball Poll 2018: First Regular-Season Rankings Released

It took all of one week for Duke to ascend to the nation’s No. 1 ranking.

The Blue Devils moved up three spots to college basketball’s pinnacle in the latest Associated Press poll, unseating No. 2 Kansas. Gonzaga holds the No. 3 spot, while Virginia and Tennessee round out the Top Five.

Here’s a look at how the entire Top 25 played out:

1. Duke

2. Kansas

3. Gonzaga

4. Virginia

5. Tennessee

6. Nevada

7. North Carolina

8. Villanova

9. Auburn

10. Kentucky

11. Michigan State

12. Kansas State

13. Oregon

14. Florida State

15. Syracuse

16. Virginia Tech

17. Mississippi State

18. Michigan

19. Clemson

20. UCLA

21. TCU

22. LSU

23. Purdue

24. Marquette

25. Buffalo

Kansas is the fourth team in AP poll history to lose the preseason No. 1 ranking in the first week without losing. And the Jayhawks dropped through no fault of their own. Kansas looked strong in its 92-87 win over Michigan State, which is currently the No. 11 team in the country.

Instead, it’s by sheer force of Duke’s brilliance that the Blue Devils soared to No. 1. The three-headed monster of Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish looks even better than advertised, unloading a 118-84 beatdown of Kentucky in their season opener before a 94-72 win over Army on Sunday.

Army hung with Duke until the final 12 minutes, when the Blue Devils went on an 11-point run to take the victory.

“That whole thing, the hangover of success and travel and then getting ready for a game,” coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters. “The only way you do it is to do it. And our guys don’t feel good about themselves right now. And that’s good. Although they turned it around in the second half, they were in a position to lose the game and they responded, and they responded really well.”

Duke’s 135 weeks at No. 1 are the most in NCAA history. Kentucky, which sat second in the preseason poll, dipped all the way to No. 10.

The Wildcats would have been the biggest losers in the poll if not for West Virginia, which dropped from No. 13 all the way outside the Top 25 with a 99-94 loss to Buffalo. The Bulls got 43 points and 14 rebounds from CJ Massinburg in the impressive win, which sent them into the Top 25 for the first time in program history at No. 25.

No. 24 Marquette rounds out the new entries in a mostly stagnant poll.

‘Profoundly dismayed’: Amnesty strips Suu Kyi of top honour

Amnesty International has stripped Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi of its highest honour over her “indifference” to the atrocities committed by the country’s military against the Muslim-majority Rohingya.

The UK-based human rights group on Monday said it was revoking the Ambassador of Conscience Award it gave Aung San Suu Kyi in 2009 during her 15-year house arrest.

“Today, we are profoundly dismayed that you no longer represent a symbol of hope, courage, and the undying defence of human rights,” Amnesty chief Kumi Naidoo said in a letter to Aung San Suu Kyi released by the group.

“Amnesty International cannot justify your continued status as a recipient of the Ambassador of Conscience award and so, with great sadness, we are hereby withdrawing it from you.”

The group said it informed Myanmar’s leader of the decision on Sunday. She has so far issued no public response.

Once hailed as a champion in the fight for democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi has been stripped of a series of international honours over a Rohingya exodus that began in August 2017.

More than 720,000 Rohingya fled the Buddhist majority’s western Rakhine State in a military crackdown since August last year, with most seeking refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Many are believed to have been either murdered or tortured and raped.

Controversial tenure

Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party swept to power in 2015 in a landslide victory ending decades of military rule in the southeast Asian country of around 50 million.

But her tenure has been marred by a failure to speak up for Rohingya, who were driven out of the country by the army in what the United Nations has called an ethnic cleansing campaign.

Aung San Suu Kyi‘s administration rejected the UN findings as one-sided, and said the military action was engaged in a legitimate operation against armed rebels.

Last month, the 73-year-old was stripped of her honorary Canadian citizenship over her failure to speak up for the Rohingya.

In March, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum rescinded its top award while other honours, including the freedom of the cities of Dublin and Oxford, England, were also withdrawn.

She has also lost numerous smaller awards from individual universities and local and regional governments.

In 1991, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which many of her critics have also called to be withdrawn. The Swedish foundation that oversees the award has refused.

Samsung will debut new foldable phones once per year, says

Foldable phones are coming.

2017%2f09%2f19%2ffa%2frakheadshot.f59fbBy Rachel Kraus

Foldable phones aren’t going away anytime soon.

Samsung’s head of mobile, D.J. Koh, said that the company plans to release a new foldable phone every year in select markets, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News.

The report claims that the first foldable Samsung smartphone will be released in the first half of next year. Notably, it will not be part of the company’s popular Galaxy S or Galaxy Note series. Instead, the company will launch a brand new series for the foldable phones called the “Galaxy F” series.

SEE ALSO: How Samsung’s foldable phone will work

Samsung’s foldable phones were long-rumored to be one of the company’s greatest innovations in the increasingly saturated smartphone market. The phone is rumored to be vastly different — and certainly more intentionally bendable — than anything available from chief rivals Apple and LG.

It sounds a little screwy, but this type of device might actually be really helpful if it works as intended. The device would essentially work like a tablet that folds in half. When folded, the front pane of glass will be a regular smartphone-sized display.

But, when users want to indulge or use their phones for more serious work tasks, they could then unfold their phones into a full-sized tablet. The mobile front display would become inactive to reveal the tablet-sized display in all it’s glory. Plus, it’s worth noting that the display would not have any breaks on the binding. It would, indeed, be one large display.

Samsung’s new “Galaxy F” smartphones will unfold into a full-sized tablet.

Image: samsung

Koh says that Samsung’s first foldable smartphone will ship in the first half of 2019 “no matter what.” The yearly unveils, and that determination, indicates that Samsung views this new device as another flagship — not just a gimmick.

Production will reportedly start with 1 million units. That means Samsung thinks 1 million people want to walk around with a double-decker phone in their pants. And Koh reportedly insisted that that was just a start, and expects to increase production should the need arise, which it definitely, totally will.

The phone will also reportedly cost $1,770 — more expensive than the most pricey iteration of the iPhone XS Max. Smartphones really were becoming too cheap, frankly. Too many affordable, simple, and intuitive smartphones out there. Thank goodness someone has finally introduced a premium entry into the market. Since we’re all so rich, you know? Us millennials are totally down to buy a foldable phone in lieu of saving for a mortgage on a house we can’t afford.

But that price really is a steal, considering you’re getting both a phone AND a tablet in one device. Just think — you could use your phone in a vertical aspect ratio. And — then — you could use your phone on a screen that’s double the size.

Who doesn’t absolutely, positively need that?! With yearly updates to boot!

Maybe this phone will be worth bending over backwards for, after all.

Carmelo Anthony Rumors: 76ers ‘Kicking the Tires’ on SF If Released by Rockets

The Philadelphia 76ers could be among the teams interested in Carmelo Anthony if he is released by the Houston Rockets.

Chris Sheridan of Get More Sports reported the news Monday, noting the Sixers are “kicking the tires” on making a waiver claim on Anthony.

The Rockets and Melo appear to be headed for a divorce after he’s seen action in just 10 games. He has been held out of Houston’s last two contests with an illness as rumors have persisted about his departure. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported several Rockets players do not expect Anthony to return.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey spoke to reporters before Sunday’s win over the Indiana Pacers and said those scapegoating Anthony have been “unfair.”

“We’ve been extremely happy with his approach,” Morey said. “Every reason we’ve brought him here, he’s followed. Again, that’s why he’s here. It’s unfair that there’s all this speculation on just one player. I understand it, because he’s obviously a Hall of Famer, but it’s unfair.”

Anthony has averaged 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game with the Rockets but has been an awkward fit on both ends of the floor. His defense in particular has been difficult to mask—the team allows 9.1 more points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor, per NBA.com—and Houston’s been impressed with the play of undrafted rookie Gary Clark.

MacMahon reported the Rockets are expected to sign Clark to an NBA contract once the Anthony situation is sorted out. Clark is currently playing on a two-way deal.

The Sixers need help at the 4 spot after agreeing to trade Robert Covington and Dario Saric to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Jimmy Butler, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Anthony is an imperfect fit, but Philly might be forced into a less than ideal situation given the relative dearth of other options available.

Salvadoran rape survivor faces prison for giving birth in toilet

Usulutan, El Salvador – The trial of a young Salvadoran woman, who became pregnant after being raped and suffered complications during her pregnancy, is set to begin on Monday in the latest case tried under the country’s strict abortion laws.

Imelda Cortez, 20, is accused of attempted aggravated homicide of her newborn baby. She became pregnant at the age of 17 after being raped repeatedly by her stepfather.

Cortez, who said she was not aware she was pregnant at the time, suffered abdominal pains and went to the toilet where she fainted in April 2017. Her baby was found in the toilet.

The baby survived, but Cortez was sent to jail to await trial. She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Her stepfather has been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a minor and faces up to 15 years in prison.

Cortez’s lawyers had previously asked the judge to suspend the case due to lack of evidence of an attempted aggravated homicide. Medical reports from government institution Legal Medicine show that the young mother experienced a natural birth with no signs of having induced it herself. The baby did not show signs of aggression after birth, the institution reported.

A verdict in the case is expected sometime this week.

Women suffer under strict abortion laws

Cortez is one of the dozens of Salvadoran women accused of attempting to kill their babies in a country with a total abortion ban and some of the highest rates of disapproval of legalising abortion.

The Central American country criminalised abortion in all circumstances in 1998 when the country rewrote the penal code to remove previous exceptions that allowed abortion in some cases. Since then, El Salvador has put dozens of women behind bars for suspected abortions.

In the face of national and international pressure, El Salvador released some women imprisoned for suspected abortions earlier in the year.

This included Teodora Carmen Vasquez, who was released in February after serving more than 10 years in prison for aggravated homicide in one of the most high-profile cases of women imprisoned for abortion in El Salvador.

Carmen Vasquez was convicted in 2008 for allegedly aborting her child and sentenced to 30 years in prison. She maintained she suffered a stillbirth after health complications. Her sentence was reduced before her release.

Since Carmen Vasquez was allowed to walk free, at least four other women have been released.

“For us women who have been detained in a prison for late-term obstetric emergencies, I consider the system unjust because they have not investigated the things as they have happened,” Carmen Vasquez told Al Jazeera in September. “They’ve accused us of something that we’ve never done, just because we had these emergencies outside a hospital.”

‘A step backwards’

Although Vasquez’s release marked a small step forward for women’s rights, recent shifts in the political makeup of the Salvadoran National Assembly worry rights advocates.

Despite lobbying by activists, a bill to depenalise abortion in cases of rape of a minor and risk to the life or health of mother failed to pass in April 2018.

In May 2018, newly elected representatives for the legislative assembly took their seats, with the right-wing ARENA party retaking control, leaving little possibility of passing a similar bill until the next election cycle.

The international community should be alert because sexual and reproductive rights often take a back seat when there are these steps backwards for human rights. The worst part is always lived by women.

Sara Garcia, Citizen Group for the Depenalisation of Abortion

Sara Garcia, an activist with the Citizen Group for the Depenalisation of Abortion, called the failed attempts a “step backwards for the assembly, for our democracy and for the human rights of women”.

She also called on the international community to “be alert because sexual and reproductive rights often take a back seat when there are these steps backwards for human rights. The worst part is always lived by women.”

Carmen Vasquez stands in solidarity with Cortez because they’ve gone through the same experience, with just one difference.

“Now, I’m free and she’s still going through this process,” she said. “They should investigate the cases well to serve justice as it should be.”

Danai Gurira’s Heartfelt People’s Choice Speech Is A Celebration Of Women As Superheroes

Alberto Rodriguez/E! Entertainment/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images

The recurring theme at 2018’s E! People’s Choice Awards, echoed in many acceptance speeches throughout the show on Sunday night (November 11), was gratefulness. That’s standard fare at awards shows, sure, but this year’s show took place in Santa Monica, just miles from where cataclysmic blazes have killed 31 people and charred 200,000 acres of land. Most speeches thanked the firefighters and first responders. Some asked for continued prayers and good wishes.

When Black Panther‘s Danai Gurira stepped up to accept Action Movie Star of 2018, she offered a version of those thoughts, too, expressing gratefulness in the native tongue of Wakanda before thanking director Ryan Coogler for “entrusting women to be collaborators and to be front and center and to have space to tell a story with him.”

Gurira’s win as Black Panther’s fierce warrior-general Okoye was made even sweeter by the four nominees she bested in the category, all fellow superheroes. To win Action Movie Star of 2018, she beat out Chris Hemworth (in Thor: Ragnarok), Chris Pratt (in a non-superhero role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Ryan Reynolds (in Deadpool 2), and the Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman. She still called each of them “beautiful” and said she loved them all.

Finally, Gurira’s closing sentiments brought her entire speech to another level. “To the people, to the people, to the people!” she said to rising applause. “Thank you for affirming that women and girls, when they’re given a chance to hang with the boys, can hang with the best of them.”

Gurira returned to the stage twice more for Avengers: Infinity War‘s big wins, alongside costars Scarlett Johansson and Pom Klementieff. Watch Gurira’s inspiring solo speech above in full.
