What your favorite home assistant command really says about you

2018%2f11%2f12%2f8e%2fhttps3a2f2fblueprintapiproduction.s3.amazonaws.com2.4bf63By IZOD

No matter what kind of home assistant or smart speaker you’re on a first name basis with, chances are you’ve reached co-dependent status with it — because no one wants to physically do things when you can yell at a piece of plastic to do it instead. Playing actual board games? It’s not 1984. Jotting down things for your to-do list? Uh, pens are practically an endangered species. Knowing things? Please, there’s the internet for that.

Our go-to commands get us through the day, but when you really think about it, your favorite requests actually reveal a lot about your character. Here, we take a closer look at what your choice commands could be saying about you.

“Set a timer”

When you ask your home assistant to set a timer, you feel like the boss of your domain. Heaven forbid you should have to take out your phone to manually do it on some digital app. No, you have things to do! You are clearly a precise, punctual, and to-the-point person, which means you are efficient with your time and can’t waste precious seconds on anything beyond asking a timer to be set for you. We’re talking as little effort as possible — just a shout, if you will — because you’re too busy multitasking or trying to get in a 6-minute cat nap to worry about an alarm, too.

“Read the news”

If you ask a smart speaker to read you the news, you’re mildly interested in what’s happening around you and want the anyone who’s tracking your digital footprint to think that you’re smart. Optics are important to you, and how are you to keep up appearances if you don’t have a loose grasp on current events? A firm grasp might require actually picking up a newspaper or scrolling through a news site — but the former would get ink on your fingers and the latter would put you at risk for carpal tunnel, so you respectfully decline and prefer to consume your news aurally. It’s eco-friendly and efficient, and everyone loves a twofer.

“What time is it?”

We all need to know what time it is, but our phones, clocks, or watches aren’t always nearby. Asking for the time is a natural question for a hands-free assistant, especially when you, well, have your hands full. Now, if you’re the type to ask what time it is multiple times, that’s just peak laziness. Get quiet, dig deep, and ask yourself: Are you happy with this sloth life? You also may be suffering from acute lethargy and should consider consulting a physician.

“Play [song]”

Sometimes you have a song in your head and you just need to hear it in real life. Other times you just need to fill the deafening silence in the room. Either way, you’re a fantastic human being because you like music and everyone knows that music is awesome and makes the world go ‘round. Also, if you have friends who don’t like music, they’re probably robots and you should excise them from your social circle immediately.

“What’s the weather?”

No longer can you make it through more than five waking minutes of the morning without knowing what the weather is. How will you decide what to wear? What if you’re too hot or too cold? Do you need an umbrella? Ultimately this says you’re the type who likes to be prepared for anything. Not only do you ask what the weather is, you also try to mine additional information by posing your question in other clever ways: What’s the temperature? Is it going to rain today? Fear not, A-types. To ensure you’re always primed for the elements, wear layers. And remember: If it’s fall or winter, it’s always sweater weather.

Leftover season is upon us, which means that now is the time to invest in some solid Tupperware.

You may be thinking that the mix-matched menagerie of lids and plastic containers you have tucked away in your kitchen will do the trick, but I regret to inform you that it will not.

Come the end of your Thanksgiving meal, as you try to fit your leftovers into whatever food storage containers you have, you’ll wish you’d invested in some sturdy containers worthy of storing the meal you spent hours—days, even!—creating.

Beyond the holidays, the right food containers can make a hell of a difference when you’re packing your lunch, meal prepping, or storing things in the freezer for a later date. So, why not take this opportunity to invest in some food storage that will actually serve your needs rather than those flimsy plastic containers that came with your last Seamless order?

With so many options available, wading through the vast food container selections can be exhausting, so we’ve broken down the most vital information to consider before clicking buy.

Glass vs. plastic

Food containers often fall into one of these two categories. Plastic containers are lightweight and easily transportable, while glass tends to be sturdier and best for reheating leftovers. But which is actually better? It depends on what you intend on doing with your containers.

Typically, glass container is reserved for meals stored in the freezer or the fridge that can easily be transferred to the oven for heating up, while plastic containers are ideal for packing your lunches, Kim Kimbriel, a Container Store buyer told the Washington Post.

When it comes to plastic containers, there has been some concern over materials containing BPA (bisphenol-A) and phthalates, which may be “endocrine disrupters” (meaning that they can mess with your hormones,) according to Harvard Health Publishing. Now it’s easier than ever to find plastic containers that are BPA free, but there are still looming concerns over whether or not it’s ever really OK to microwave plastic containers. If you’re really worried about any potential side effects of using plastic containers, it’s probably best to stick with glass.

Containers for all occasions

The vast array of container options available is enough to make anyone’s head spin. They come in so many different shapes and sizes that it can be difficult to navigate which package or container is right for your particular set of needs.

If you’re a meal prepper or desire to become one, you’ll probably want to invest in a set of rectangular, medium-sized glass containers like Bayco’s 8-piece set available on Amazon for $31.99.

<img alt="Perfect for prepping all your meals." class="" data-caption="Perfect for prepping all your meals." data-credit-name="Bayco/amazon” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!294d” data-image=”https://ift.tt/2DhqWGJ; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/cjybrftwmld4OP6QwelwgvvbnkE=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F881401%2Fa6ba7e62-b8a1-45b3-8817-612b172360a6.png” title=”Perfect for prepping all your meals.”>

They’re easy to stack, heat, and fill with food for the entire week.

But if you plan to eat salads primarily or foods that don’t require reheating, these deli-style plastic containers from DuraHome might be a worthwhile investment. They’re also perfect for freezer storage or holding dry goods.

<img alt="Endless options." class="" data-caption="Endless options." data-credit-name="durahome/amazon” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!4aec” data-image=”https://ift.tt/2PWBYIm; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/35jZz8ywVgX4Y9uZ-32cFrk-MWk=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F881393%2F42ca78ea-061b-4d2b-8af1-698a71cf6f59.png” title=”Endless options.”>

Endless options.

Oh, and if you’ve been bringing a lot of soups or pastas to work with you, you may want to check out Zojirushi’s Stainless-Steel Food Jar.

Remaining ingredients

While glass tends to be ideal for most food storage situations, I find that mini plastic containers are perfect for storing those last couple of onion slices, leftover dressing, or herbs in the fridge or freezer.

Greenco’s mini food storage containers make it easy to hold on to your leftover ingredients without taking up much space. They’re BPA-free and freezer safe, but unfortunately they’re not microwave compatible.

General leftovers

For all your general leftover needs, a nice set of glass containers that range in size should do the trick.

We recommend the 30-piece glass Snapware set, available on Amazon for $$49.99. It may seem like more than you need, but I promise you’ll find use for all of it.

<img alt="You'll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set." class="" data-caption="You'll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set." data-credit-name="snapware/amazon” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!a25c” data-image=”https://ift.tt/2PWC9Dw; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/GFaPS3uJEdpmKQeYnqYsTnNHA_Y=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F881348%2F13e8e1eb-6bdb-480e-b7dd-5582a21d1b30.png” title=”You’ll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set.”>

You’ll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set.

Image: snapware/amazon

But, if you’re convinced it’s just too much for you, you can invest in Snapware’s six- or eight-piece sets instead.

Once you’re fully equipped with an arsenal of food containers, you’ll be ready for pretty much any leftovers situation.

Potential Landing Spots for 10-Time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony

0 of 5

    Mary Altaffer/Associated Press

Carmelo Anthony and the Houston Rockets are apparently blowing past the honeymoon period and racing directly to divorce court.

First, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski brought word the two parties were “discussing his role and how they might still be able to proceed together for the rest of the season.” Then the floodgates opened.

Marc Stein of the New York Times reported “Anthony has been informed that his brief time with the team will soon be ending.” Multiple Rockets players and coaches believe Anthony has played his last game as a Rocket, per ESPN.com’s Tim MacMahon. The Athletic’s Kelly Iko reported Anthony will be waived “in the near future.”

If Anthony’s exit is imminent, where could he possibly go?

On one hand, he’s 34 years old, playing the worst ball of his career and about to leave a team for the third time since September 2017. But he’s also a future Hall of Famer who has hinted more than once he has something left in the tank.

Has he already played his last NBA game? Or are there teams that might still covet what he offers? We’ll explore both possibilities while identifying five potential landing spots.

1 of 5

    Noah Graham/Getty Images

This just feels like a Golden State Warriors move, doesn’t it? They’ve never shied away from a roster challenge—JaVale McGee, Nick Young, DeMarcus Cousins, etc.—and they might have a bigger need for Anthony’s game than you’d think.

Before Boogie fell in their laps this summer, the Dubs “were thinking wings,” as general manager Bob Myers said on 95.7 The Game in August (via NBC Sports Bay Area). Their only offseason perimeter pickups were rookie Jacob Evans, Jonas Jerebko (really a small-ball big), Alfonzo McKinnie (a 26-year-old who entered the season with 14 NBA appearances) and two-way contract recipients Damion Lee and Marcus Derrickson (another stretch 4).

Suffice it to say, wing depth isn’t exactly a strength at the moment.

For that matter, neither is second-team scoring. Despite having the NBA’s highest-scoring offense and not having anyone average 35 minutes per gameKevin Durant, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are the only ones clearing 30—Golden State sits just 28th in bench points per game (30.8). Quinn Cook paces the reserves with 8.9 points per game, a figure boosted a bunch by the 27 points he tallied during his lone start.

If Anthony would be receptive to a bench role—admittedly a significant if—he could help fortify one of the franchise’s only weaknesses. Since the start of last season, the Warriors have received 20 points from a bench player only once. Anthony orchestrated two such performances during his first seven outings of 2018-19. His career-low 16.4 points per 36 minutes would still rank sixth on the Warriors.

Of all possible landing spots, Golden State might have the fewest minutes to offer. But if Anthony puts winning at the center of his decision, he won’t find a more favorable situation. Plus, if he provides a playoff spark on an uncharacteristically quiet night by the Warriors stars, his legacy might get a welcome lift.

This connection is unavoidable, even though the Los Angeles Lakers are fully loaded with 15 contracts and more in need of help on defense (17th in efficiency) than offense (11th).

Still, this would be the basketball bucket list move for Anthony. The Lakers were high on his wish list this summer in no small part because he could finally play with his close friend LeBron James, per ESPN.com’s Jordan Schultz. Classmates in the 2003 draft, James and Anthony have long discussed the possibility of joining forces.

“That was the first conversation: How are we going to play together?” Anthony told B/R Mag’s Howard Beck. “He was like: ‘Man, I want to play with you. How are we going to play together?’”

Only the Lakers know if they feel they should make that happen, but they certainly could.

There’s flotsam at the back end of the roster that could easily be jettisoned. There’s also a fairly significant need for bench buckets. After Kyle Kuzma’s promotion to the first five, the highest-scoring reserve left is Josh Hart (11.8 points per game this season, but only 7.9 as a rookie last year). Anthony is pumping in 13.4 per night—amid a poor enough fit that the cord could be cut less than a month into the campaign.

While Anthony’s arrival could jolt some locker rooms, he may not even be noticed in L.A. The Lakers added Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee, Lance Stephenson and Michael Beasley in the same offseason. If there are any chemistry concerns, they won’t be big enough to scare off this front office.

The Philadelphia 76ers just made their all-in push by acquiring disgruntled four-time All-Star Jimmy Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves. But Philly also sacrificed some of its depth to get the deal done.

While the Sixers didn’t trade anyone the caliber of Butler, they did lose starting forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric in the exchange. With rookie Zhaire Smith (foot) sidelined for the foreseeable future and Mike Muscala providing inconsistent production (42.5 percent shooting), Philadelphia needs frontcourt reinforcements.

According to Get More Sports’ Chris Sheridan, the Sixers are “kicking the tires on the idea of claiming [Anthony] off waivers.” At least one NBA analyst likes the potential fit.

“How about going to Philly?” ESPN’s Jalen Rose said on Get Up! “Why not try to ride their wave? They just lost two players in theory that can give them offense and give them shooting. Maybe you go to the East Coast where you’re more familiar and try to see if you can link up with a young basketball team that’s still trying to figure their way.”

The Sixers need more shooting (33.0 three-point percentage, 22nd), and while Anthony wouldn’t be an automatic fix to that problem (career 34.7 percent), he’s had flashes of perimeter proficiency. From 2012-13 to 2013-14, Anthony averaged 2.3 long-range makes per game with a 39.1 percent conversion rate. Getting him back near those numbers could provide a big lift to Philly’s 21st-ranked attack.

With Butler hounding wings and Joel Embiid protecting the paint, the Sixers might have enough defenders to carve out a sizable role for Anthony without disrupting their top-10 defense.

The 2018-19 San Antonio Spurs roster feels a bit like a challenge of Gregg Popovich’s coaching acumen. Had you made a list of the Association’s least-Spursy players a few years back, chances are you’d have put LaMarcus Aldridge, DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay all near the top—perhaps just beneath Anthony.

But Popovich has found ways to make it work with the first three, each of whom has played a substantial role in the squad’s 7-4 start. The most successful strategy—which should interest Anthony—is embracing those players’ skills, their anti-Spursy traits if you will. It was a lesson Popovich learned on the heels of Aldridge’s trade request.

“As discussions went on, it became apparent to me that it really was me,” Popovich said, per ESPN’s Michael C. Wright. “He’d played in the league for nine years. I’m not going to turn him into some other player. … That was just silly on my part—total overcoaching. So we took care of it, and he’s been fantastic.”

Perhaps Popovich’s greatest strength is his ability to mold his approach to his players. The good news with Anthony is he’d already be comfortable with a lot of the changes. The Spurs lead the league in pull-up shots (29.9 per game) and post touches (20.7), so some of the sharpest weapons in Anthony’s arsenal would not only be allowed but also featured.

Adding intrigue to this destination is the fact Popovich has already proved capable of teaching old hoopers new tricks. Both DeRozan and Aldridge are averaging career highs in assists per game, while Gay just missed posting his best defensive rating during his first season with the Spurs. A ticket to the Alamo City, then, could be Anthony’s best hope for rounding out his game.

5 of 5

    Nathaniel S. Butler/Getty Images

No matter where you try to plug in Anthony—the Miami Heat, Portland Trail Blazers and Brooklyn Nets are among the other possibilities—he lands as a support player, likely in a second-team role. It’s possible he’ll decide that’s not the way he wants to end his career.

At his exit interview with the Oklahoma City Thunder in April, Anthony sounded like he was at least contemplating retirement.

“It’s something I really have to think about, if I really want to be this type of player, finish out my career as this type of player, knowing that I have so much left in the tank and I bring so much to the game of basketball,” Anthony said, per ESPN.com’s Royce Young.

Granted, a player saying he has “so much left in the tank” doesn’t exactly sound like someone planning to hang ’em up. But if he’s resistant to the idea of being a reserve and only has reserve roles open to him, then maybe it makes the most sense to just walk away.

He has nothing left to prove in the NBA, despite what his naysayers might lead you to believe. He ranks 19th all time with 25,551 points and 18th with a career scoring average of 24.0 points per game. He’s made 10 All-Star teams and six All-NBA rosters. Basketball Reference gives him a 98.2 percent chance of making the Hall of Fame, which is ninth-highest among active players.

And even if his critics will point to a lack of playoff success (only two trips beyond the first round), Anthony is content with his career—and the three Olympic gold medals in his collection.

“Most athletes don’t have an opportunity to say that they won a gold medal, better yet three gold medals,” Anthony said in 2016, per Marc Stein, then with ESPN.com. “… I can look back on it when my career is overif I don’t have an NBA championship ring—and say I had a great career.”

While the prospect of retirement might seem jarring—Anthony was a full-time starter on a playoff team just last season—maybe it will offer him a sense of peace he won’t find elsewhere.

Arab refugees in Bangkok long for home amid immigration crackdown

Bangkok – Six years ago, several days after taking his high school exams, Ibrahim and his family fled Syria to Lebanon where they boarded a flight to Bangkok.

Arriving in the Thai capital on tourist visas, they experienced freedom away from the horrors of war in Syria.

But since their visas expired, they have been living as undocumented migrants.

“We thought of Thailand as a transit point,” Ibrahim told Al Jazeera, “and that we would stay one or two years. Yet after six years, our lives are stuck in limbo.”

In Thailand, Ibrahim’s family applied for resettlement in the US only to wait for two years with no progress.

They then requested resettlement in Canada, restarting the entire process.

In Bangkok, it takes an average of three to four years to complete the resettlement process, leaving many refugees vulnerable and frustrated.

“We’d love to live here, it’s like the Middle East. People are friendly and will talk to you, unlike people in Europe who won’t say hello,” said Ibrahim. “We no longer dream of peace, only of a passport.”

Thailand is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and the Thai Immigration Act of 1979 views anyone overstaying their visa as an illegal immigrant, including asylum seekers and refugees.

Refugees and asylum seekers are caught up in a police raid and transported to an immigration detention centre [Al Jazeera]

The UNHCR told Al Jazeera that Thailand is home to 103,000 refugees with an estimated 6,000 urban refugees from countries including Pakistan, Somalia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, and Syria.

Thailand was among the last countries to maintain a consulate in Damascus, making it an obtainable visa at a time when doors were shutting to those fleeing Syria.

Mirvat came to Thailand in 2012 soon after graduating from Damascus University.

Six years later, she remains in Bangkok where she has had four children but has not been able to pursue her career.

“The most difficult thing is that our kids can’t attend school and have nothing to do,” she told Al Jazeera.

The greatest fear facing Bangkok’s urban refugees is arrest and as a result, many stay inside their homes for long stretches of time.

“I can no longer go to the market and am scared to go to the hospital. We feel scared by everything,” said Mivrat.

Refugees’ fears have recently been heightened by a major police operation that began in October with the appointment of Surachet Hakparn, the new immigration bureau commissioner of the Royal Thai Police.

“Operation X-Ray Outlaw Foreigner” aims to round up and detain undocumented migrants, with asylum seekers and refugees caught up in the clampdown.

Police raids have led to hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers being held at immigration detention centres.

Last month, the immigration bureau also revoked bail for undocumented migrants who could have previously been released on 50,000 baht ($1,500).

An estimated 200 refugees from Syria were among those summoned back into detention.

The recurrent myth that refugees are a security threat and a drain on society is simply not true. Palestinians and Syrians are incredibly productive and resourceful.

Evan Jones, Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network

Refugees previously granted bail are now subject to increased harassment and arrest, said migrants and rights groups.

“The immigration detention centre is not designed for long-term stay, but hundreds of detainees stay for more than one year,” Puttanee Kangkun of Fortify Rights told Al Jazeera.

Most are overcrowded with more than 300 detainees held in a cell designed for 70 inmates.

In violation of children’s rights under international law, children are separated from parents and siblings while unaccompanied boys under the age of 12 are held alongside adult men.

Officially, Thai authorities claim that some refugees have fake UNHCR cards and that the operation will check their documents, and re-release genuine asylum seekers on bail.

However, local refugee rights groups told Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity that they were sceptical, noting that the Thai government works closely with UNHCR and can easily check its database.

“Beside the UNHCR card, which has almost no meaning under domestic legal provisions, [refugees] have no other legal protection,” said Puttanee Kangkun.

‘We do not ask for money, only to be resettled’

The hostile environment has made a bad situation worse for refugees. Over the past year, Thai immigration police have targeted African immigrants in Bangkok in what has been criticised as racial profiling

Compared to Somali, Nigerian and other African nationalities, Arabs have had moments where they were able to evade authorities more easily and enjoy some degree of greater freedom.

Ibrahim and his mother used to supplement their remittances by selling Arab street food including shawarma, hummus, and bread at community events and near local mosques. But the recent clampdown on immigration has put a stop to this.

Basil, a 20-year old Palestinian refugee from Syria, explained: “For a long time, I could go out, eat, party and have a life here. But that has all changed now.”

“Soi Arab”, the Middle Eastern quarter in the heart of Bangkok’s tourist district of Nana, is home to restaurants where young Syrian and Palestinian refugees work without documentation.

“I was paid 250 baht ($7.50) a day for a 12-hour shift washing dishes and the owner gave leftover food for me and my family,” said Basil.

Yet recently, fearing police raids, owners are asking refugee workers to stay home.

“Nobody is working now,” said Basil.

Despite the recent immigration raids, refugees Al Jazeera spoke to were not critical of the Thai government.

“We feel abandoned by the United Nations,” said Mivrat. “We do not ask for money, only to be resettled.”

‘Soi Arab’ in Nana district is popular with Middle Eastern tourists and some refugees have found work there [Kittipot Promprakai/Al Jazeera]

Sources told Al Jazeera that around 20 percent of the refugees from Syria in Thailand have been resettled, which is high compared to the less than 1 percent global average for third country resettlement.

The majority were Syrian passport holders, with only around 50 individuals left in Thailand.

Those stuck in Bangkok are primarily Palestinian refugees whose options are more limited.

No Palestinian refugees have been resettled in 2018, while resettlement to the US has ground to a halt since the election of President Trump.

“For many Syrian and Palestinian refugees, the sad reality is that they may never be considered for resettlement in a third country,” Evan Jones of the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network told Al Jazeera.

“With global resettlement numbers dropping, these individuals may be stuck on the fringes of Thai society for years or even decades ahead, unable to access some of their most basic human rights.”

If given a choice, many Palestinian refugees from Syria would settle in Thailand. The majority interviewed for this story have university degrees and had established careers before fleeing the war.

But within some sections of Thai society, Arab refugees are perceived as posing a security threat.

“The Thai government should accept the reality that not every refugee could resettle in third countries, so the concept of local integration needs to be taken into consideration in balance with national security concerns for a sustainable solution,” said Puttanee Kangkun of Fortify Rights.

Jones added: “The recurrent myth that refugees are a security threat and a drain on society is simply not true. Palestinians and Syrians are incredibly productive and resourceful and bring a range of skills and knowledge that could help benefit Thai society.”

Even if the Syrian war ends, Palestinian refugees who travelled to Thailand on now-expired emergency documents have lost the right to return to Palestine. Renewing their travel documents has also become much more difficult since the Syrian consulate in Bangkok closed in 2017.

Refugees that Al Jazeera spoke with estimate that there are 400 Palestinian refugees from Syria remaining in Bangkok, with another 201 from Iraq and 15 from Gaza.

For some of them, resettlement will be to a fourth rather than a third country.

Asma was born in Haifa in 1940 and as a young girl fled Palestine for Iraq. She was displaced again by Iraq’s descent into violence after 2003, living for three years in a refugee camp in Cyprus before arriving in Thailand.

“I asked the UN to send me home to Haifa,” she said. “I just want to be in my country.”

‘I think it’s over’: Sinema closes in on Arizona Senate victory

Kyrsten Sinema

Rep. Kyrsten Sinema’s campaign manager released a statement Sunday calling the Democrat’s lead in Arizona’s Senate race “insurmountable.” | Matt York/AP Photo

Elections

It would take a stunning reversal for Martha McSally to overtake the Democrat.

Arizona’s Senate race isn’t over. But Kyrsten Sinema should be feeling awfully good about her chances.

Down narrowly on election night, the Democratic congresswoman overtook Republican Martha McSally two days later and has since padded her lead to nearly 32,000 votes as mail-in ballots have been tallied. At this point, it would take a stunning reversal for the Republican to mount a comeback, since the vast majority of outstanding votes are in areas of the state where Sinema is ahead, in some cases by significant margins.

Story Continued Below

Even some Republicans have begun to acknowledge the increasing likelihood of defeat.

“I think it’s over,” said Chuck Coughlin, a veteran Republican strategist in the state, crediting Democrats’ turnout operation, particularly among early voters. “It’s just not there. It’s not in the math.”

There are still nearly 220,000 votes left to be counted, and a new batch will be released Monday evening. But McSally would have to win 57 percent of the remaining votes to eke out a victory; she currently trails 49.6 percent to 48.1 percent.

Some national figures agree it’s all but over. One national Republican, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, said McSally’s potential path to victory is becoming “increasingly more difficult” and that the math “gets harder every day.”

Of the remaining uncounted votes, more than 90 percent — in excess of 200,000 ballots — are in counties where Sinema currently leads, and only about 16,000 are in counties where McSally is ahead. Republicans had been expecting the vote updates to begin to swing McSally’s way as the state began counting early ballots that were dropped off at polling places on Election Day late in the weekend, but Sinema continued to gain ground on Sunday.

The vast majority of ballots McSally would need to win are in Maricopa County, a traditional Republican stronghold where she currently trails Sinema by more than three percentage points.

Democrats have grown increasingly confident in Sinema’s chances with each update. Her campaign manager, Andrew Piatt, released a statement Sunday calling the Democrat’s lead “insurmountable.”

Mike Noble, a Republican pollster who surveyed the race throughout the cycle, assessed a McSally turnaround as “highly improbable.” McSally will likely bank votes in Pinal County, where she currently leads comfortably. She won a majority of the nearly 8,000 votes Pinal tabulated Monday afternoon, but failed to cut significantly into Sinema’s lead. And in addition to Maricopa, there are likely more than 36,000 votes left in Pima County, where Sinema is leading by double digits.

“The Senate race is pretty much over, unless there’s a miracle out there,” Noble said. “Statistically, it seems that Sinema will likely win.”

Not all Republican share that view. Robert Graham, the former chairman of the state GOP, said it’s too soon to count out McSally given the large number of uncounted ballots in Maricopa County. Though the county has skewed towards Sinema so far, Graham said a shift is still possible as the remaining ballots are counted early this week.

“I wouldn’t throw in the towel yet,” Graham said. “I think Martha still has a fighting chance.”

Republicans currently have a 51-49 Senate majority, and had a net gain of two seats on the night of the election after knocking off three Democratic incumbents, which party officials considered a major success.

Arizona would be the second GOP-held seat flipped by Democrats — they also won in Nevada — and would limit Republicans total gain to 53 seats at most, pending a recount in Florida, where Republican Gov. Rick Scott narrowly leads Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

Democrats had been cautiously optimistic about winning Arizona throughout the cycle. Sinema led in public and private polling for the majority of the race, having taken a lead after spending heavily on TV over the summer while McSally was still slogging through a three-way Republican primary, which she ultimately won easily.

But McSally steadily chipped away at Sinema’s lead, and the race went into election night considered a tossup after the parties and outside groups combined for more than $50 million in spending. Sinema ran towards the center while McSally ran as a strong Trump ally, a dynamic that may have helped Sinema with the state’s swing voters.

Sinema or McSally would become the first woman to represent Arizona in the Senate. Whoever wins will likely be joined soon by another newcomer. Sen. Jon Kyl currently holds the state’s other seat after being appointed to replace late Sen. John McCain, but Kyl has not committed to continuing to serve beyond this year.

There is some speculation in Arizona and Washington that if McSally loses this race, she could be appointed to replace Kyl, though neither she nor Republican Gov. Doug Ducey have mentioned the possibility publicly. Kyl or his potential replacement would have to run in a special election in 2020, and again for reelection in 2022.

Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., And More Marvel Heroes Pay Tribute To Stan Lee

WireImage/Getty Images/FilmMagic

Stan Lee revolutionized comic books by delicately balancing superhuman powers with humanizing choices and giving young people everywhere heroes they could relate to. Thanks to his illustrious stamp on the industry, his legacy will live on long after his passing. At the same time, it makes his death that much more devastating, particularly for those who were lucky enough to work closely with the Marvel legend.

Soon after the sad news was announced, Chris Evans took to Twitter to celebrate Lee’s contribution to pop culture. “For decades he provided both young and old with adventure, escape, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy. He exuded love and kindness and will leave an indelible mark on so, so, so many lives,” he wrote, before signing off with Lee’s signature, “Excelsior!!”

Giving credit where credit was due, Robert Downey Jr. — who helped turn Lee’s comics into an epic film franchise starting with the MCU’s first movie, Iron Man — simply stated, “I owe it all to you,” alongside a photo of them together, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige wrote, “No one has had more of an impact on my career and everything we do at Marvel Studios than Stan Lee.”

Of course, it’s not just the superhero staples who are mourning this loss. Black Panther stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke paid tribute to the Marvel boss, as well as Tom Holland. “How many millions of us are indebted to this guy, none more so than me. The father of Marvel has made so many people so incredibly happy. What a life and what a thing to have achieved,” the Spider-Man star wrote on Instagram.

We regret to inform you Trumpy Bear is a *real* thing you can spend money on

2016%2f09%2f16%2f56%2fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde2lzax.6d630By Nicole Gallucci

Looking for something to tightly squeeze while you fear for the future of American politics? Trumpy Bear is here to help… or at least help give you nightmares. The purpose of this terrifying little creature is unclear, but the product is very real.

For those who haven’t yet seen the commercial for Trumpy Bear, a Trump-themed teddy bear with an American flag blanket hidden in its back, let us fix that.

The ad resembles an amateur splicing of deleted scenes from the Twilight films, a classic, embarrassing infomercial, a class project, and an extremely low-budget campaign commercial. And there’s a very good chance after watching it you’ll think it’s fake. But it’s unfortunately not.

The stuffed bear is really for sale and can be yours for two payments of $19.95 (plus shipping).

Though Trumpy Bear has been advertised for a year, the commercial — complete with clueless-looking actors, poor editing, a laughable voiceover, and completely unrealistic scenarios — is so bizarre that each time a clip is shared on social media it attracts fresh attention.

So when Fox News aired a Trumpy Bear ad on Monday morning, people were shook all over again.

Many people have a hard time believing the bear, with it’s ill-fitting blonde combover, long red tie, and white collar and wrist cuffs, is real. And once they find out it is, the reality is equally (if not more) challenging to grasp.

As you may have guessed, many people cope with the upsetting revelation that this bear does exist by mercilessly trolling it. Here are a few examples.

I wonder if the Trumpy Bear is a licensed product. In the 80s, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sued a toy company for an unlicensed product called “Kareeem Abdul-Jabear.” Part of the terms of his legal victory was that he got to take all the existing bears from the company pic.twitter.com/hc1ct2yHix

Fox News: Show your patriotism by buying Trumpy Bear! The bear with a flag up its butt!

The Trumpy Bear ad packs everything bad about infomercials into a horribly painful two minutes, and brings politics into the mix to make things even worse.

But according to the commercial, the China-made bear will improve your golf game! So how can you pass on an offer like that?

In a newly published interview with Jeopardy!’s Alex Trebek, Vulture’s David Marchese asked the game show’s long-time host how he thinks President Donald Trump would fare on the show. Naturally, Trebek wasn’t afraid to give his honest opinion.

SEE ALSO: Donald Trump’s election was a ‘traumatic experience’ for many college students

“He might not agree that any of the correct responses are correct,” said Trebek, taking aim at the president’s frequent dismissal of facts

In the hours since the interview hit the internet on Monday morning, people have been zeroing in on Trebek’s dig, among a handful of other notable lines from the piece.

Trebek also called Trump a bully in his interview, emphasized the importance of knowledge, and made some truly unfortunate comments about the #MeToo movement.

But overall we have to say that Trebek’s assessment of Trump sounds pretty on-point to us.

Things haven’t been easy for LeBron James since signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, and the 14-time All-Star admitted he had to step back and reflect on his current situation so as not to overreact.

I haven’t changed anything outwardly, but you know me. You know how I am,” James said, per Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes. “I almost cracked [last week]. I had to sit back and remind myself, ‘[Expletive], you knew what you were getting yourself into.’ This process has been good for me. I just have to continue being patient.”

Comic book genius Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, dies at 95

Stan Lee, who dreamed up Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk and a cavalcade of other Marvel Comics superheroes that became mythic figures in pop culture with soaring success at the movie box office, died at the age of 95, his daughter said on Monday.

As a writer and editor, Lee was key to the ascension of Marvel into a comic book titan in the 1960s when, in collaboration with artists such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he created superheroes who would enthrall generations of young readers.

“He felt an obligation to his fans to keep creating,” his daughter JC Lee said in a statement to Reuters news agency. “He loved his life and he loved what he did for a living. His family loved him and his fans loved him. He was irreplaceable.”

Lee was declared dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee’s daughter. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Americans were familiar with superheroes before Lee, in part thanks to the 1938 launch of Superman by Detective Comics, the company that would become DC Comics, Marvel’s archrival.

Lee was widely credited with adding a new layer of complexity and humanity to superheroes. They had love and money worries and endured tragic flaws or feelings of insecurity.

“I felt it would be fun to learn a little about their private lives, about their personalities and show that they are human as well as super,” Lee told NPR News in 2010.

He had help in designing the superheroes but he took full ownership of promoting them.

His creations included web-slinging teenager Spider-Man, the muscle-bound Hulk, mutant outsiders The X-Men, the close-knit Fantastic Four and the playboy-inventor Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man.

Dozens of Marvel Comics movies, with nearly all the major characters Lee created, were produced in the first decades of the 21st century, grossing over $20bn at theaters worldwide, according to box office analysts.

Spider-Man is one of the most successfully licensed characters ever.

Lee, as a hired hand at Marvel, received limited payback on the windfall from his characters.

In a 1998 contract, he wrestled a clause for 10 percent of profits from movies and TV shows with Marvel characters.

In 2002, he sued to claim his share, months after “Spider-Man” conquered movie theaters. In a legal settlement three years later, he received a $10m one-time payment.

Hollywood studios made superheroes the cornerstone of their strategy of producing fewer films and relying on big profits from blockbusters. Some people assumed that, as a result, Lee’s wealth had soared. He disputed that.

“I don’t have $200m. I don’t have $150m. I don’t have $100m or anywhere near that,” Lee told Playboy magazine in 2014. Having grown up in the Great Depression, Lee added that he was “happy enough to get a nice paycheck and be treated well”.

In 2008, Lee was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest government award for creative artists.

Initially thought comics were a dead-end career

Lee was born as Stanley Martin Lieber in New York on December 28, 1922, the son of Jewish immigrants from Romania.

At age 17, he became an errand boy at Timely Comics, the company that would evolve into Marvel. He got the job with help from an inside connection, his uncle, according to Lee’s autobiography Excelsior!

Lee soon earned writing duties and promotions. He penned Western stories and romances, as well as superhero tales, and often wrote standing on the porch of the Long Island, New York, home he shared with his wife, actress Joan Lee, whom he married in 1947 and who died in 2017.

The couple had two children, Joan Celia born in 1950 and Jan Lee who died within three days of her birth in 1953.

In 1961, Lee’s boss saw a rival publisher’s success with caped crusaders and told Lee to dream up a superhero team.

Lee at the time felt comics were a dead-end career. But his wife urged him to give it one more shot and create the complex characters he wanted to, even if it led to his firing.

The result was the Fantastic Four. There was stretchable Mr Fantastic, his future wife Invisible Woman, her brother the Human Torch and strongman The Thing. They were like a devoted but dysfunctional family.

“Stan’s characters were always superheroes that had a certain amount of humanity about them or a flaw,” said Shirrel Rhoades, a former executive vice president of Marvel and its publisher in the mid-1990s.

“As iconic as Superman may be, he’s considered a Boy Scout. He doesn’t have any real flaws,” Rhoades said. “Whereas you take a Spider-Man, kids identify with him because he had his problems like they did. He suffered from great angst.”

Lee considered the comic-book medium an art form and he was prolific. By some accounts, he came up with a new comic book every day for 10 years.

“I wrote so many I don’t even know. I wrote either hundreds or thousands of them,” he told the Associated Press in 2006.

Lee involved his artists in the process of creating the story and even the characters themselves, in what would come to be known as the “Marvel Method.”

It sometimes led critics to fault Lee for taking credit for ideas not entirely his own.

He described his creative process to Reuters in outlining how he came up with his character Thor, the god of thunder borrowed from Norse mythology.

“I was trying to think of something that would be totally different,” he said. “What could be bigger and even more powerful than the Hulk? And I figured why not a legendary god?”

To give Thor more rhetorical punch, Lee gave him dialogue styled after the Bible and Shakespeare.

As for Tony Stark-Iron Man, he was based on industrialist Howard Hughes, Lee told interviewers.

Stan’s soapbox

Lee became Marvel’s publisher in 1972. He went on the lecture circuit, moved to Los Angeles in 1980 and pursued opportunities for his characters in movies and television.

Through it all, he kept connected with fans, writing a column called “Stan’s Soapbox” in which he often slipped in his catchphrase “‘Nuff Said” or the sign-off “Excelsior!” In his later years, he gave constant updates via Twitter.

“Stan was a character. He was a character as much as any he ever created,” Rhoades said. “He created himself, in a way.”

He also made cameos in most Marvel films, pulling a girl away from falling debris in 2002’s Spider-Man and serving as an emcee at a strip club in 2016’s Deadpool.

The Walt Disney Co bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for $4bn in a deal to expand Disney’s roster of characters, with the most iconic ones having been Lee’s handiwork.

By that point, Lee had all but parted ways with Marvel after being made a chairman emeritus of the company. But even in his 80s and 90s, Lee was a wellspring of new projects, running a company called POW! Entertainment.

Recent projects he helped make possible range from the films Black Panther and Doctor Strange to such TV series as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Guardians of the Galaxy.

“His greatest legacy will be not only the co-creation of his characters but the way he helped to build the culture that comics have become, which is a pretty significant one,” said Robert Thompson, a pop culture expert at Syracuse University.
