How Democrats are failing on legalized marijuana

Overall, the year has not lived up to expectations.

This was supposed to be the big year for marijuana legalization. But in many state capitols across the country, efforts have stalled or collapsed as Democrats clash over everything from race and criminal justice to how to divvy up a gold mine of pot tax revenue.

Legalization of recreational marijuana seemed all but inevitable in at least a half dozen states when the year began — including Democratic legislatures in New York, New Jersey and Illinois.

Story Continued Below

But in state after state, proposals encountered significant turbulence, and the clock is now running out on the legislative season.

New Jersey’s top lawmaker declared the state’s legalization drive dead and will instead support a 2020 ballot referendum. New York Democrats are trying to rekindle efforts to pass a bill that would permit recreational use after negotiations stalled out during the budget process in March. And in New Mexico, a legalization bill got pushed aside for more pressing priorities, most notably boosting education funding.

Disputes over addressing racial and economic justice issues, home cultivation of cannabis plants and marijuana-related state revenue have splintered Democrats as they seek to corral enough votes for passage.

“The legislative process is difficult, it’s complicated and it’s really challenging to get agreement on a large-scale social reform,” said John Hudak, a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution and author of “Marijuana: A Short History”, noting that marijuana advocates often overestimate its salience. “While cannabis reform is very popular, it’s not something that most Americans feel passionately about.”

Marijuana advocates point to some unlikely victories in parts of the country that have previously been hostile. The Alabama Senate, for example, recently approved medical marijuana legislation, and the Texas House has advanced bills reducing penalties for marijuana possession and expanding its medical program.

But overall, the year has not lived up to their expectations.

At this point, Illinois appears to be the best bet for getting a full legalization bill across the finish line, but it’s still iffy with two weeks left until adjournment. Freshman Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s budget plan is counting on pot to generate an estimated $500 million for the cash-strapped state.

“We think we’re getting close,” Illinois state Sen. Heather Steans, chief sponsor of the legalization bill, SB7, told POLITICO recently. “We’ve been working on this two years. It’s been a collaborative process with many stakeholders at the table.”

One key sticking point in Illinois — particularly with law enforcement — is whether to allow people to grow cannabis plants at home. Steans said she expects the bill’s final language will allow only medical marijuana users to grow their own.

“We think there’s a strong rationale for that since it can’t be covered by insurance or Medicaid,” Steans said. “And that makes it easier for law enforcement.”

But some top Illinois Democrats, including outgoing Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, are worried that lawmakers are trying to jam legalization through too quickly in order to reap the financial windfall.

“Don’t go head first into this just because we’re thirsty and hungry for revenue,” he told POLITICO.

Across multiple states, one of the thorniest issues is how to address equity concerns raised by the War on Drugs, with minorities subject to disproportionate financial and criminal penalties for drug possession for decades.

In New York, some Latino and African American lawmakers have withheld support for legalization because they say criminal justice reform and provisions designed to ensure minority participation in the newly-legalized — and potentially very lucrative — market don’t go far enough to redress historical inequities.

On Thursday, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Illinois Capitol to demand that a dedicated funding stream from marijuana sales go toward violence reduction and programs that boost communities disproportionately affected by the enforcement of lower-level drug offenses.

By contrast, in New Jersey, some elements of the three-bill package rankled conservative and moderate Democrats from the powerful South Jersey voting bloc. One sticking point: a provision that allowed for expunging third-degree distribution convictions, which covers up to five pounds of marijuana.

Ultimately, those fractures derailed the New Jersey legislation. Senate President Steve Sweeney instead is backing a 2020 ballot referendum on full legalization.

“I know the governor tried. We would speak two or three times a week when we were trying to get it done, but there were never a list of votes provided to me to show they were close,” Sweeney said at a press conference on Wednesday. He added that Gov. Phil Murphy “didn’t listen to the advice that legislators gave him” on how to shore up support for legalization.

The rocky path that legalization bills have encountered in state legislatures isn’t entirely surprising given the lack of past success. Of the 10 states that have full legalization, just one — Vermont — enacted it through the legislative process. And there, possession was legalized, but recreational sales remain prohibited. All of the others were passed through ballot referendums, a much cleaner process since voters can only approve or reject the proposals as written. Medical marijuana bills have enjoyed more success in state capitols, with 16 states enacting laws.

“It’s hard to do it legislatively, I admit,” Murphy told a press conference recently, adding that he considered the expungement and social justice elements to be the most important reasons for legalizing cannabis through legislation, rather than via referendum. “We’re a lot more complicated than Vermont. It’s always been default to go to a referendum and ask the people.”

Marijuana advocates point out that they are making progress, including in parts of the country that have previously been hostile, even if this year didn’t live up to their hopes.

Karen O’Keefe, director of state policies for the Marijuana Policy Project, also notes that it took years in both New York and Illinois to garner support for medical marijuana bills.

“I’ve worked in marijuana policy for 15 years and having Democratic majorities in both chambers hasn’t even made it easy to pass medical marijuana,” O’Keefe said. “Elected officials tend to be way behind the public on this issue.”

But legalization opponents argue that lawmakers inevitably turn against the proposals when presented with evidence of public health concerns, particularly around driving on drugs, and marijuana use by kids. They insist that the legalization movement is waning.

“Each year, well-paid pot lobbyists come to state capitols promising marijuana legalization bills are a panacea to state budgets and social justice,” said Kevin Sabet, president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, which has worked to defeat legalization bills across the country, in a statement to POLITICO. “The fact is, marijuana legalization is a failed policy that is having disastrous effects in every state that legalizes.”

Legalization advocates scoff at such assertions. They point to polling data that shows strong bipartisan support for legalization as evidence that, whatever the setbacks, progress will continue. Even if the legislative efforts in Illinois and New York collapse this year, they’ll be pushing bills again in 2020, and Connecticut’s push to pass full legalization this year is making steady progress. In addition, marijuana legalization referendums are likely to be on the ballot in states beyond New Jersey, possibly including the presidential battlegrounds of Florida and Ohio.

“In the grand scheme of things, our reform movement is just beginning to crest after all these years of prohibition,” said Carly Wolf, state policies coordinator for the marijuana advocacy group NORML. “It comes down to managing expectations and thinking realistically. … It’s not realistic to expect that five state legislatures are going to approve legalization bills in a single year.”

Boeing admits flaws in 737 MAX simulator software after crashes

Boeing has acknowledged it had to correct flaws in its 737 MAX flight simulator software used to train pilots, after two deadly crashes involving the aircraft that killed 346 people within six months.

The US-based aerospace company said its simulators were incapable of replicating certain flight conditions that contributed to the Ethiopian Airlines crash in March, or the Lion Air accident off Indonesia last October.

“Boeing has made corrections to the 737 MAX simulator software and has provided additional information to device operators to ensure that the simulator experience is representative across different flight conditions,” Boeing said in a statement on Saturday.

The company did not indicate when it first became aware of the problem, and whether it informed regulators.

Its statement marked the first time Boeing admitted there was a design flaw in software linked to the 737 MAX, whose MCAS anti-stall software has been blamed in large part for the Ethiopian Airlines tragedy.

Grounded planes

The 737 MAX was grounded around the world in March following the Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 on board just five months after a similar crash of a Lion Air flight of a 737 MAX killed 189 people.

The company said the latest “changes will improve the simulation of force loads on the manual trim wheel,” a rarely used manual wheel to control the plane’s angle.

“Boeing is working closely with the device manufacturers and regulators on these changes and improvements, and to ensure that customer training is not disrupted,” it added.

Southwest Airlines, a major 737 MAX customer with 34 of the aircraft in its fleet, told AFP news agency it expected to receive the first simulator “late this year.”

American Airlines, which has 24 of the aircraft, said it had ordered a 737 MAX simulator that will be delivered and put into operation in December.

“As a result of the continuing investigation into both aircraft accidents, we are looking at the potential for additional training opportunities in coordination with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and Allied Pilots Association,” it added.

On Thursday, Boeing said it had completed a software update for its 737 MAX jets and that is also submitting a plan on pilot training to the US Federal Aviation Administration.

The planes are awaiting approval from US and international regulators before they can return to service.

Currently, there is only one flight simulator specific to the 737 MAX in the United States, and it is owned by Boeing, according to FAA documentation.

US airlines train their pilots flying the MAX on a simulator built for the 737 NG, the version preceding the 737 MAX in the 737 aircraft family.

Oliver McGee, a former US deputy assistant secretary for transportation, said it’s vital for pilots to have access to accurate training systems.

“These simulators are very important to the airline operators,” he told Al Jazeera from Lubbox, Texas. “It can cost about tens of millions of dollars over the life of the aircraft.”

“American Airlines is already on board, saying we’re going to get those simulators and get more data and information, to the manufacturers, from the pilots where the maneuverability and controllability of the MCAS takes place,” he added.

US airlines have targeted August as the date they expect to resume flying on the 737 MAX.

Draymond Green Proving He’s Warriors’ Most Irreplaceable Player

PORTLAND, OREGON - MAY 18: Draymond Green #23 of the Golden State Warriors dribbles against CJ McCollum #3 of the Portland Trail Blazers during the second half in game three of the NBA Western Conference Finals at Moda Center on May 18, 2019 in Portland, Oregon. As long as the Golden State Warriors keep winning without him, there’ll be room for debate about Kevin Durant‘s value.

But in the wake of Draymond Green’s top-down, front-to-back, mind-body-and-soul takeover during the Dubs’ 110-99 Game 3 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday, there is no disputing his irreplaceability.

Green finished Saturday’s contest with 20 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists and four steals in 38 electrifying minutes. It was his seventh career playoff triple-double and third in this postseason alone. Though it’s very often the case that Green’s numbers don’t tell the story of his impact, that was especially true in Game 3.

Yes, even with numbers as eye-popping as those.

Several of his most meaningful plays didn’t culminate with him scoring. He triggered the end-to-end sequence that gave the Warriors their first lead of the night, starting with a tough contest on a Damian Lillard drive and then making a full-court sprint that produced a Kevon Looney layup.

Drew Shiller @DrewShiller

Sooooooo many people said Draymond Green would never be the same player he was the past couple of seasons. Those people need to apologize https://t.co/Wta8n6ZNjI

The end-to-end stretch finished an 18-5 run that gave the Warriors a lead after they trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half.

When Jordan Bell missed a breakaway dunk that could have sent the second-year big man spiraling, Green was in his ear, preventing the nosedive with some positivity.

Golden State Warriors @warriors

Leadership. https://t.co/2JskSLdugj

Though saying so might rob Bell of a bit too much agency, it’s hard to divorce Green’s pep talk from the way Bell bounced back from his blunder. The second-year forward remained in the game after his botched slam and converted his next dunk attempt (using two hands to remove any doubt) and turned in a clutch block to preserve the Warriors’ 82-79 lead at the third-quarter buzzer.

Green wasn’t just pushing the pace. He was pushing his teammates, goading them on with his words and his play. If his upbeat chatter wasn’t enough, it seemed as though he decided to play so hard that anyone performing at a lower level of intensity would look lazy by comparison.

“It was one of the best games I’ve ever seen Draymond play,” Steve Kerr said during the post-game press conference.

NBA on ESPN @ESPNNBA

“He was like a wrecking ball out there. He was destroying everything in his path.”

—Steve Kerr on Draymond’s Game 3 performance https://t.co/Y0S4B4riZ2

He chose the right night, as this was the type of game the Warriors could have been excused for letting slip away. They were up 2-0 and, perhaps rightfully, didn’t have reason to feel threatened by a Blazers team that was showing fatigue even before Green ran them into the ground. Had Golden State lost on Saturday, it still could have secured a Game 4 win and gone home to ice the series.

But now the Blazers are on the cliff’s edge because Green shoved them onto that precipice.

Sure, Stephen Curry seized control in the fourth quarter, flinging daggers en route to 36 points on 11-of-26 shooting. But without Green practically forcing the rest of the Warriors to keep hold of a rope that was rapidly slipping from their grasp earlier on, it’s hard to know if Curry’s late surge would have mattered—or if he’d have even been on the floor if this game had continued down the path it was on when Portland held that 18-point lead in the second quarter.

Maybe that feels like a stretch, crediting Green for Curry’s closing blitz, but his was one of those infectious efforts that touched every corner of the game. Green’s relentless pace-pushing kept the Warriors within striking distance during that otherwise lackluster first half, and when he slammed the pedal down even harder after the break, it broke the Blazers.

It also earned Green plenty of plaudits, like this:

Bobby Marks @BobbyMarks42

Draymond Green is playing on a different level right now.

And this:

Rob Mahoney @RobMahoney

Draymond Green is unbelievable.

And this:

Ben Taylor @ElGee35

Draymond looks like 1982 Magic out there. I’m impressed.

A cursory look through coverage of this dynasty will yield a dozen instances of some Warriors figure—Kerr, Stephen Curry, you name it—calling Green the team’s heart and soul. But that sells him short in the anatomy department. He’s the guts and brains, too. The player who intuits what his team needs and figures out how to deliver it.

“When we have Steph, Klay, KD, DeMarcus, I don’t need to play like that,” Green said in his postgame presser on NBATV. “I take it upon myself to be the guy to give that up.”

Unless you count his 12 dimes, Green gave nothing up on Saturday. Instead, he took the series.

So with the Warriors having effectively ended this thing (unless a wiped-out Blazers team becomes the first to ever erase a 3-0 deficit in a seven-game engagement), we can look ahead and ask the usual questions.

When will Kevin Durant be back, and in what form?

Will KD’s re-integration into a team that has rediscovered some three-year-old magic without him prove difficult?

How can Golden State stop Giannis Antetokounmpo or Kawhi Leonard (but, come on, it’ll be Giannis)?

Those answers will be difficult to come by, and there’s only so much Green can do to grease the skids for Durant’s return. But maybe the more important thing to consider in all this is that Green, the guy whose public spat with Durant in November nearly pulled the team apart, is the one currently holding everything together.

Re-Signing Klay Thompson Should Be the Warriors’ Top Offseason Priority

Nobody truly doubted Thompson’s value to the Warriors as he heads for free agency, but it seemed fair to wonder whether he might relish the opportunity to be the top star elsewhere. Earlier in May, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith reported on First Take that the five-time All-Star might be growing tired of being the third option in Golden State’s offense.

Nick Friedell of ESPN followed up by reporting the Warriors are feeling good about Thompson potentially sticking around the Bay Area for the long term: “The simple fact is that the Warriors love Thompson and Thompson loves being a Warrior.”

Golden State is clearly better with Durant healthy, and the team should make every effort to keep the 10-time All-Star if he opts out of his contract. In a perfect world, Thompson and Durant will stay in the fold heading into next season.

If push comes to shove, this series is driving home exactly why Thompson—not Durant—should be the star Golden State must re-sign above any other.

The Warriors systematically tore Portland apart in the second half. As soon as the they stared chipping away at the Blazers’ lead, everybody knew how the game was going to end. And that happened with the core of stars responsible for one ring and an NBA-record 73 regular-season wins before Durant arrived.

Look no further than Lillard’s numbers to see Thompson’s impact on the defensive end.

Kirk Goldsberry @kirkgoldsberry

Dame Lillard in regular season:
35 points on 28 shots per 100 possessions.

Dame when guarded by Klay in this series:
12 points on 18 shots per 100

https://t.co/4DaIkNcl1N https://t.co/XMxBC00Jgy

Chris Broussard @Chris_Broussard

Here’s a mouthful: Steph & Klay are making Dame & CJ look like Dame made Russ look. The gap between the NBA’s 1st & 2nd best backcourts is HUGE!

He didn’t have a great night on offense, shooting 8-of-20 from the field and 1-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Warriors were also minus-one with him on the floor, per ESPN.com. The last figure could be attributed to the fact Steve Kerr threw Thompson out to lead the second unit for stretches.

Golden State of Mind @unstoppablebaby

The Dubs are giving the Blazers major issues with the Klay + Bench Mob lineup to start the 4th….#KerrIsAGenius

Take Durant out of the mix, and the nucleus of a championship-winning squad remains. General manager Bob Myers and majority owner Joe Lacob shouldn’t lose sight of that fact when the time comes to formally offer Thompson a max contract.

Along with that, the team shouldn’t hesitate to communicate to Thompson exactly how much he’s valued in his current home.

What’s Next?

The Blazers host Game 4 on Monday, with tipoff scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Even if Portland comes out on top to push the series to five games, it’s likely delaying the inevitable with the Warriors one win away from a fifth straight NBA Finals.

India elections 2019: Final round of voting under way in 59 seats

Indians are voting in the seventh and final phase of national elections, wrapping up a six-week-long campaign season with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeking re-election for another five years.

Nearly a 100 million people are eligible to vote on Sunday in 59 constituencies across seven states – including the politically-critical Uttar Pradesh in the north and West Bengal in the east.

Sunday’s voting also covers Modi’s constituency of Varanasi, a temple town where he was elected in 2014. He spent Saturday night at Kedarnath, a temple of Hindu god Shiva nestled in the Himalayas in northern India.

Counting of votes is scheduled for May 23.

The election is seen as a referendum on Modi’s five-year rule. He has adopted a nationalist pitch in trying to win votes from the country’s Hindu majority by projecting a tough stance against Pakistan, India‘s Muslim-majority neighbour and archrival.

Modi has played up the threat of Pakistan, especially after the suicide bombing of a paramilitary convoy on February 14 that killed 40 Indian soldiers.

Voter turnout recorded till 9 am: Bihar-10.65%, Himachal Pradesh- 0.87%, Madhya Pradesh-7.16%, Punjab-4.64%, Uttar Pradesh-5.97%, West Bengal- 10.54, Jharkhand-13.19%, Chandigarh-10.40% in #Phase7 of #LokSabhaElections2019 pic.twitter.com/wG1XvkYS3m

— ANI (@ANI) May 19, 2019

Reporting from Varanasi, Al Jazeera’s Sohail Rahman said while the BJP stressed on national security as its main poll agenda, the opposition attempted to corner him by focusing on issues of development.

“Discourse certainly changed after Pulwama attacks and national security became the issue. However, people and experts that I talked to said actual issues haven’t come out, issues like health, education, sanitation and infrastructure, which the opposition used to target the government.”

“The incumbent BJP government has been very reluctant to talk about what they have achieved in the last five years,” he said.

The Congress and other opposition parties are challenging Modi over a high unemployment rate of 6.1 percent and farmers’ distress aggravated by low crop prices.

Some of Modi’s boldest policy steps, such as the demonetisation of high currency notes to curb black-market money and bring a large number of people into tax net, proved to be economically damaging.

A haphazard implementation of “one nation, one tax” – The Goods and Services Tax – also hit small and medium businesses.

Voter turnout in the first six rounds was approximately 66 percent, the Election Commission said, up from 58 percent in the last national vote in 2014.

The election has taken place in a charged atmosphere as Modi’s BJP sought a second term by pushing policies that some say have increased religious tensions and undermined multiculturalism.

The campaigning has been marred by accusations and insults, as well as the unprecedented use of social media.

Voting has largely been peaceful but for sporadic violence in the eastern state of West Bengal , where the BJP is trying to wrest seats from Trinamool Congress, a powerful regional party that is currently governing the state.

In a drastic and unprecedented action, the Election Commission cut off campaigning early in West Bengal on Thursday after days of clashes in the final stretch of the election.

Pre-election poll surveys by the media indicate that no party is likely to win anything close to a majority in parliament with 543 seats. The BJP, which won a majority of 282 seats in 2014, may need some regional parties as allies to stay in power.

A Congress-led government will require a major electoral upset.

War of Will Wins 2019 Preakness Stakes; Favorite Improbable Finishes 6th

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - MAY 18: Jockey Tyler Gaffalione celebrates after crossing the finish line on War of Will #8 to win the 144th Running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on May 18, 2019 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)

War of Will reigned supreme in the 2019 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday.

He finished ahead of Everfast to earn the fourth victory of his professional career.

Warrior’s Charge, which started from the third post, led for much of the race, with Anothertwistafate running behind in second. Heading out of the final turn, Warrior’s Charge remained in front of the pack, but War of Will surged ahead on the inside rail. Everfast and Owendale also overtook Warrior’s Charge to earn second and third, respectively.

War of Will takes the second jewel of the Triple Crown. https://t.co/MzXHpj0GPr

Finish: Horse; Jockey; Trainer (Payout)

1. War of Will; Tyler Gaffalione; Mark E. Casse ($900,000)

2. Everfast; Joel Rosario; Dale Romans ($300,000)

3. Owendale; Florent Geroux; Brad Cox ($165,000)

4. Warrior’s Charge; Javier Castellano; Brad Cox ($90,000)

5. Laughing Fox; Ricardo Santana Jr.; Steve Asmussen ($45,000)

6. Improbable; Mike Smith.; Bob Baffert

7. Win Win Win; Julian Pimentel; Michael J. Trombetta

8. Bourbon War; Irad Ortiz, Jr.; Mark Hennig

9. Signalman; Brian Hernandez Jr.; Ken McPeek

10. Anothertwistafate; Jose Ortiz; Blaine Wright

11. Alwaysmining; Daniel Centeno; Kelly Rubley

12. Market King; Jon Court; D. Wayne Lukas

13. Bodexpress; John Velazquez; Gustavo Delgado

Betting Payouts (Win, Place, Show)

War of Will ($14.20, $7.40, $5.40)

Everfast (N/A, $32.00, $14.40)

Owendale (N/A, N/A, $6.00)

Exacta (1-10): $947.00

Trifecta (1-10-5): $4,699.80

Superfecta (1-10-5-3): $51,924.00

The win represents a redemption for War of Will after the Kentucky Derby. The colt was among those impeded by Maximum Security at the Derby, which resulted in Maximum Security’s disqualification.

There was no controversy this time around as jockey Tyler Gaffalione ran a perfect race. War of Will was constantly hovering around the leaders. Gaffalione made sure to conserve War of Will’s stamina and picked the right time to make his move on Warrior’s Charge and jockey Javier Castellano.

Castellano left a lot of space on the inside rail, and Gaffalione could’ve tried to push War of Will a little earlier in the race.

Had he done so, he might have lost the victory in the last moments. War of Will appeared to build a healthy lead, only for Owendale and Everfast to quickly close the gap.

Improbable was the favorite on race day, boasting a +250 (bet $100 to win $250) moneyline. He was never much of a factor Saturday, running in the middle of the pack and failing to make a significant push on the leaders. Improbable followed up his fourth-place showing at the Kentucky Derby with a sixth-place effort in the Preakness.

Nick Coffey @TheCardConnect

Improbable was pretty blah in both races

While War of Will grabbed the headlines, Bodexpress won the hearts and minds of race fans.

Jockey John Velazquez fell off the horse as soon as the race began, creating the surreal scene of Bodexpress going the entire Preakness by himself. He had no trouble following the track’s route and keeping up with his peers.

Since he was jockey-less, Bodexpress is officially credited as failing to finish. He exits Pimlico as the clear sentimental victor, though.

Bodexpress tried to win Preakness without a jockey 😂 https://t.co/lBRbxCORdW

If Bodexpress runs the Belmont without a jockey I am getting a tattoo of a damn horse

Gentry Estes @Gentry_Estes

Had Bodexpress won without his jockey: Nah, it wouldn’t have counted. Yea, it would have been epic.

Fans already knew heading into the event they’d have to wait at least another year to witness the 14th Triple Crown winner. Kentucky Derby champion Country House pulled out of the Preakness on May 7, with trainer Bill Mott confirming he was experiencing a minor coughing fit.

For some, Country House’s withdrawal helped avoid a potentially tricky situation given the controversy that surrounded his triumph at Churchill Downs. Race officials disqualified Maximum Security after determining he disrupted some of his fellow horses during the Derby. It was the first time in history the Kentucky Derby winner was disqualified.

That story undoubtedly would’ve cast a shadow over Country House had he competed in and won the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes on June 8.

Instead, the spotlight will be on War of Will in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s race. Gaffalione and trainer Mark E. Casse have a little less than a month to get him ready for the trip to Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, assuming they intend to compete in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

A Times Square billboard caught fire, and the tweets were lit

So hot right now.
So hot right now.

By Jack Morse

New York City’s Times Square is a famous for its towering digital billboards. However, they’re typically not on fire.

That all changed Saturday when a billboard advertising Skyy Vodka went up in flames around 3 p.m. The video ad, featuring drag queen Trixie Mattel, continued to play as the fire grew and tourists looked on.

The resulting tweets, perhaps predictably, were lit.

Keep your loved ones close and your billboards closer today. ❤

— Trixie Mattel (@trixiemattel) May 18, 2019

holy shit we’re casually walking through times square and there’s suddenly tons of fire trucks and ambulances and BOOM! a big ass fire the next block up from the line friends store! pic.twitter.com/tAvuKyhvSw

— METLIFE | 🤪 𝚙𝚛𝚘𝚝𝚎𝚌𝚝𝓉𝒶𝑒𝚜𝚚𝚞𝚊𝚍 🤪 (@taesyellowberet) May 18, 2019

But Skyy Vodka didn’t have all the fun, with the burning digital screen at one point switching to a whiskey ad and the request to “please drink responsibly.” Is a flaming shot “responsible”? Asking for a friend.

According to ABC 7, no injuries have been reported. Thankfully, tourists can now go back to their regular Times Square activities of photographing definitely not-on-fire billboards and people dressed up in costumes.

Michigan GOP congressman says Trump’s conduct impeachable

Justin Amash

“Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,” Justin Amash wrote.

Michigan Rep. Justin Amash became the first Republican lawmaker to declare that President Donald Trump committed impeachable offenses and that Attorney General William Barr “deliberately misrepresented” special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

Amash, whose libertarian views often put him at odds with Trump and his fellow Republicans, posted a series of tweets Saturday afternoon outlining positions that even some Democrats have been unwilling to embrace — an extraordinary development that comes as Democratic leaders face increasing pressure from progressives to launch impeachment proceedings.

Story Continued Below

“Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,” Amash wrote, arguing that lawmakers have become too afraid of using impeachment to deter presidential misconduct.

“Impeachment, which is a special form of indictment, does not even require probable cause that a crime (e.g., obstruction of justice) has been committed; it simply requires a finding that an official has engaged in careless, abusive, corrupt, or otherwise dishonorable conduct,” Amash wrote.

In recent days, more rank-and-file Democrats have said they support initiating impeachment proceedings against the president; but Speaker Nancy Pelosi and most Democratic leaders and committee chairs have resisted those calls, citing their ongoing investigations into the president’s alleged conduct. The House Judiciary Committee, for example, is investigating Trump for allegations of obstruction of justice and abuses of power.

Around half of Mueller’s 448-page report is devoted to allegations that the president sought to undermine or shut down the special counsel’s investigation altogether. The report outlined several episodes that meet all the element of an obstruction of justice offense, most notably former White House Counsel Don McGahn’s testimony about Trump’s persistent efforts to have McGahn fire the special counsel.

Amash argued that Congress is failing to live up to its constitutional duties in part because of “extreme partisanship” that has worsened under Trump.

“While impeachment should be undertaken only in extraordinary circumstances, the risk we face in an environment of extreme partisanship is not that Congress will employ it as a remedy too often but rather that Congress will employ it so rarely that it cannot deter misconduct,” Amash said. “Our system of checks and balances relies on each branch’s [sic] jealously guarding its powers and upholding its duties under our Constitution. When loyalty to a political party or to an individual trumps loyalty to the Constitution, the Rule of Law — the foundation of liberty — crumbles.”

The Michigan Republican also echoed Democrats and hundreds of former federal prosecutors who have argued that Trump would have been charged with obstruction of justice if he were not president — a reference to the Justice Department’s long-standing policy stating that a sitting president cannot be indicted. In his report, Mueller cited that policy when explaining his decision not to charge Trump with a crime.

Amash took aim specifically at Barr, putting the GOP lawmaker in line with Democrats who have accused the attorney general of trying to portray Mueller’s report in a favorable light for the president.

“In comparing Barr’s principal conclusions, congressional testimony, and other statements to Mueller’s report, it is clear that Barr intended to mislead the public about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s analysis and findings,” Amash said, adding that “Barr’s misrepresentations are significant but often subtle, frequently taking the form of sleight-of-hand qualifications or logical fallacies, which he hopes people will not notice.”

Despite Amash’s frequent opposition to Trump, he is one of the most conservative members of Congress and sits on the powerful House Oversight and Reform Committee, which is investigating Trump for alleged financial crimes. His fellow Republicans have maintained that Democrats’ various investigation of Trump are politically motivated and illegitimate, and they’ve largely declared Mueller’s Russia probe to be a settled issue that warrants no further action or investigation.

Amash claimed that most members of Congress haven’t even read Mueller’s report, and he slammed those lawmakers whose minds were made up “within hours” of the release of the redacted version of Mueller’s report.

“America’s institutions depend on officials to uphold both the rules and spirit of our constitutional system even when to do so is personally inconvenient or yields a politically unfavorable outcome. Our Constitution is brilliant and awesome; it deserves a government to match it,” he concluded.
