Trump flips the script on Washington scandal response

The president is heading out on the campaign trail as planned even as federal investigators delve into his businesses and campaign.

President Donald Trump is sticking with his ambitious midterm campaign schedule amid a cascade of scandal — a break from the typical pattern of politicians dropping out of sight in politically damaging moments.

The president will visit Ohio on Friday to speak at the state Republican Party dinner. He also is booked to do more than a half-dozen rallies and 16 fundraisers in as many as 15 states over the next six weeks, according to a person familiar with the plans.

Story Continued Below

Trump’s refusal to hide reflects his unshakeable confidence that he’s the only one who can get them to turn out in November, allies say — and the reality that his base won’t abandon him, no matter what. He infamously boasted as a candidate in early 2016 that he could “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters” — and since then has earned his “Teflon Don” reputation as his presidency has bounced from crisis to crisis.

“It’s really an important aspect,” said GOP pollster Chris Wilson. “You just don’t see in his core supporters any dip in that — no matter what happens.”

In the past week, his former campaign manager Paul Manafort was found guilty of tax evasion in Virginia and his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty in New York to campaign-finance violations associated with payments made shortly before the 2016 election to two women — porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal — who claimed they’d had affairs with Trump. On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg had been granted immunity in connection with the investigation into the payoffs.

Trump was briefly shunned after the “Access Hollywood” tape surfaced in October 2016, with Speaker Paul Ryan canceling campaign-trail appearances in the last weeks before the presidential election and dozens of others calling on him to step aside. But Trump has avoided the fate of his predecessor Bill Clinton, who was kept off the campaign trail after his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

To Trump supporters, the legal dramas represent the latest evidence of a “witch hunt” led by special counsel Robert Mueller, who has yet to directly charge Trump or anyone associated with his 2016 campaign with any crimes involving collusion with Russian operatives.

While Republican House consultants expect the torrent of legal dramas to give Democrats an immediate bump in the generic ballot, Trump’s track record of pushing Republicans over the line in swing districts and the unpredictability of the election cycle is bolstering their convictions that 2018 won’t be a repeat of 2006, when disillusionment over the Iraq war combined with a string of corruption cases involving Republicans helped Democrats gain 31 seats to retake the House.

“It was like chipping through concrete,” said a Republican operative involved in this year’s campaign, recalling the difficulty of persuading independent voters, women and seniors in 2006. “People were just locked.”

But this time, the electorate has proven more fluid with the rapid nature of the news cycle – from the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., to the sexual misconduct allegations against Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore to the fights on Capitol Hill over tax reform and repealing Obamacare.

“A week ago we were all talking about Omarosa,” the operative said. “Who knows what we’ll be talking about next week.”

White House and campaign officials are maintaining flexibility as the races shift, they said, and so Trump could go where he is most needed – particularly earlier House races in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

“Whether that’s a visit, a tweet or a fundraiser, there are a lot of ways to handle these,” the GOP operative said.

Others pointed to Trump’s ability to survive political scandals that would have ended almost any other politician’s career, from the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump in 2005 brags about women in lewd terms to his seemingly endless insults — oftentimes about fellow Republicans. “His presidential campaign was supposed to end more than two years ago when he called out [Sen.] John McCain for ‘being captured’” in the Vietnam War, said GOP pollster Robert Blizzard.

But Democrats have been quick to jump on the legal woes threatening Trump, pointing to the Manafort and Cohen cases – along with corruption charges against California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter, one of Trump’s earliest congressional supporters – as another reason they should be fearful.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, speaking at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday, said the three events in such close succession made her “sad for America … that they would do those things.” And she quickly seized on the “corruption” narrative in summing up one of her party’s most potent fall lines of attack.

The “culture of corruption, cronyism and incompetence is so pervasive and it’s in the White House,” she added. “What they are doing is stunning to behold.”

Even without the legal drama, some Republicans were already concerned about Trump’s mercurial approach to campaigning and questioning how disciplined he’ll be on the trail.

He made a last-minute endorsement Tuesday of Wyoming multi-millionaire Foster Friess, who wound up losing his gubernatorial primary – an embarrassing electoral result that echoed Trump’s failed late endorsements in a series of special elections, including Alabama’s high-profile Senate race last year.

“Look,” Trump told a raucous crowd in West Virginia late Tuesday, before Friess finished out of the money in Wyoming. “I don’t want to brag about it, but man, do I have a good record of endorsement.”

While Friess’ campaign was ecstatic about the president’s eventual endorsement, multiple Republicans close to the campaign said the bump that Friess got from Trump’s endorsement came too late.

A longtime Trump backer, Friess jumped in late to the gubernatorial race and had tried to score an earlier endorsement from the president to pair with the support of his son, Donald Trump, Jr. He also had hoped to get the president out to a rally in Casper, Wyo.

Trump was warned about the lack of an upside to wading into the race, with the other campaigns trying to dissuade the White House from getting behind any of the candidates, two Republican campaign officials said.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Friess’s team only got wind the morning it came down, forcing them to scramble to highlight the support. Reached by phone Wednesday, Friess stressed how grateful he was for the Trumps’ support. Friess said he spoke with the president’s son earlier in the day, and gave him a message for Trump.

“I told Don [Jr.] that I wanted to double down on the support for the president, so he gets the kind of respect that he really deserves,” he said.

The president remains far more valuable in Senate races than House contests because of the different nature of the two maps – with the upper chamber largely being decided in states where the president won.

Trump is a major draw in Senate races across North Dakota, West Virginia, Montana and in states like Georgia, where “you see a change in the polling toward the Republican because he is able to motivate turnout amongst those presidential year Trump voters that might normally turn out in an off year,” Wilson said.

But even in districts where he is perceived as weaker, and a possible drag on Republicans, incumbents and some candidates in open seats have found a way to talk about the president’s woes without dissing him entirely.

Rep. John Katko of New York, running in a district carried by Hillary Clinton in 2016, told the editorial board of Syracuse.com and The Post-Standard that the president’s legal setbacks strengthen his resolve Mueller must be allowed to continue his investigation into Russian meddling. “It’s not a witch hunt,” he added.

Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois has questioned how forthcoming the president has been while Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida criticized the president’s escalating assaults on the Russia investigation.

“It is a major mistake to attack the Mueller probe in such a personal way,” Curbelo said in a statement to POLITICO. “The best thing for everyone, especially if the White House is so confident that the president will be absolved in this process, is to let the process continue.”

Liam Payne Finally Dropped His Solo EP And It’s All About Sex, Of Course

Paul Zimmerman/WireImage

Just over a week ago, Liam Payne revealed the reason we still hadn’t heard his debut LP, which he’d been teasing for months and at one point had confirmed a release date for. That reason, it turned out, was very personal. “As you may know, the last few months have seen some big changes for me,” the singer wrote on Twitter. “I looked at some of the songs on my album which were done a while ago and they felt from another age. I’m determined for my debut album to truly represent me.”

In the meantime, Payne has finally dropped a proper release with a brand-new EP called First Time on Friday (August 24), and its four tracks follow the template for mid-tempo, lightly moody, and romantic R&B-influenced pop he’s set up in the years since One Direction began its hiatus in 2016.

First Time is primarily a showcase for Payne’s voice. There’s a brief piano ballad called “Depend on It” that finds him tenderly pleading with someone to get back together and return to the days of “loving, touching, kissing, fucking like our lives depend on it.”

The title track (and new single) sees French Montana and Payne acting like a pair of heartbreakers — including in the just-dropped new music video as well — while “Home With Me” and “Slow” are ready to be added to and queued up on your bedroom-jams playlist.

As for the “big changes” Payne alluded to in his note earlier this month, it was revealed in July that he and Cheryl Cole had split after two years together. Last year, the paired welcomed a son named Bear.

On social media, Payne thanked fans for their support and added a supplementary photo of himself looking especially moody on release day, which seems crazy because, like, your EP is out, dog! Have a smile.

You can listen to First Time in full above. (And say, Louis Tomlinson, how’s that Arctic Monkeys-inspired debut album coming along?)

Samsung’s first Android Go phone is the bare-bones Galaxy J2 Core

Samsung has launched its first-ever smartphone based on Android Go, a stripped-down version of Google’s mobile operating system aimed at entry-level devices.

The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core is, unsurprisingly, not very powerful — after all, Android Go is designed to work well with really basic phones. But the J2 Core is a weakling even amongst Android Go phones.

SEE ALSO: Your Android phone pings Google a lot more than you might think

The J2 Core has a 5-inch, 960 x 540 pixel screen, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel selfie camera, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, an Exynos 7570 processor, and a 2,600mAh battery. On the software side, the J2 Core will rock Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition)

If those specs sounds like the Middle Ages, keep in mind that Android Go phones typically cost around $100 bucks (Samsung didn’t release the price for the J2 Core, though) and are invariably entry-level devices, typically in markets with lower buying power.

Compared to some other Android Go phones, though, J2 Core is pretty basic. For example, Asus’ ZenFone Live L1 comes with a 5.5-inch screen and 16GB of storage. Alcatel’s 1X also has more storage (16GB) and a bigger screen (5.34 inches) than the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core. Again, both those phones are priced at around $100, so if Samsung’s offering turns out to be cheaper, it could be a good deal for someone looking for an entry level device.

The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core will launch in Malaysia and India on Aug. 24, and Samsung plans to bring it to additional markets “in the near future.”

Cancel all future award shows. Chrissy Teigen has crowned the single greatest episode in the history of television.

On Thursday night, Chrissy shared a video of her favorite episode of the popular NBC comedy, The Office: “Dinner Party,” which she dubbed the best episode of all time.

SEE ALSO: The 65 absolute best moments from ‘The Office’

“Best episode of all time. Not only of The Office, but all of television: ‘Dinner Party’ at Michael and Jan’s,” she can be heard saying, while John Legend is heard giggling off camera.

Both a fan and cast favorite, “Dinner Party” (Season 4, Episode 13) gives viewers a rare glimpse at Dunder Mifflin employees outside the office.

Michael and Jan have Jim, Pam, Angela, Andy, Dwight, and Dwight’s plus one over for the most awkward night of food and games. And Chrissy is correct… the episode is truly perfect.

This in’t the first time Chrissy and John have shown their love for the comedy series on Twitter. Back in July the couple made several impressively deep cuts references to the show on Twitter.

I just wanted a paper shaped pancake

— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) July 10, 2018

The tweets referenced Season 5, Episode 23 of the show, titled, “Michael Scott Paper Company,” and Episode 9 of The Office‘s seventh season, titled “WUPHF.com,” which actually mentions John Legend.

The couple clearly knows their stuff when it comes to The Office, and now we know Chrissy and John also spend their nights re-watching old episodes just like us. Very relatable!

Wonder how they feel about a potential revival or Christmas special

Zimbabwe court rejects opposition bid to annul election results

Zimbabwe‘s Constitutional Court has unanimously dismissed a bid by the largest opposition coalition to annul the results of last month’s presidential election, which gave a victory to incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Chief Justice Luke Malaba said on Friday that the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) alliance, led by Nelson Chamisa had failed to prove fraud accusations during the July 30 vote.

The MDC had filed a legal challenge, citing a catalogue of alleged discrepancies, including incorrect counting and fake polling stations, as well as instances at voting centres where there were more ballots cast than registered voters.

“There has been a massive doctoring of evidence,” Thabani Mpofu, a lawyer representing the MDC, told the top court when it started sitting on Wednesday.

Mnangagwa, of the ruling ZANU-PF party, won the election with 50.8 percent of the vote – just enough to pass the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff against Chamisa, who finished second with 44.3 percent.

European Union observers said that the ZANU-PF candidate had benefitted from an “un-level playing field” and some voter intimidation, though international monitors largely praised the conduct of the election.

The legal challenge delayed Mnangagwa’s planned inauguration for August 12. According to the constitution, the inauguration should take place within 48 hours of the court’s ruling.

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa said the vote was rigged in favour of the president [Reuters]

Mnangagwa took over after a military intervention in November 2017 resulted in the resignation of 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years.

Mnangagwa, who has promised to revive the country’s ruined economy, had vowed that the vote would be free and fair amid hopes that it would open up a stream of foreign investment and aid.

Wilf Mbanga, political commentator and editor of The Zimbabwean, said the court challenge would put in question ZANU-PF’s election victory.

“Global acceptance will be difficult. Investors may be difficult to attract,” Mbanga told Al Jazeera.

Campaigning was more open than previous votes, but the election was marred by violence and a crackdown on opposition activists.

On August 1, clashes broke out in central Harare between security forces and opposition supporters. Six protesters died after soldiers opened fire, in a response the opposition alliance called “disproportionate and unjustified”.

“Praetorian politics will continue to define the political landscape and this is unsettling not only because the presence of the military on the foreground of our politics is likely to result in repression and plunder as evidenced by the killing of unarmed civilians,” Michael Choto, a political analyst, told Al Jazeera.

He called for the disbanding of “the patronage and corruption network that has characterised our country’s politics for the last 38 years.”

Coalition government?

In the parliamentary elections, also held on July 30, ZANU-PF secured a clear majority by winning 145 seats in the 210-strong parliament. The MDC came second with 63.

The ruling party, which has been in power since independence in 1980, has ruled out any form of political alliance with the opposition.

Opposition supporters were arrested during post-election violence in the capital, Harare [Reuters]

But some analysts said a coalition would ease political tensions in the country.

“This would be first prize and would solve a lot of problems but is highly unlikely given the extreme polarisation which has actually been worsened by the court case and the post-election killings,” Mbanga said.

“The winner-takes-all attitude will be disastrous but I fear that is what will happen. Although I hope Mnangagwa is pragmatic enough to see that would be counter-productive,” he added.

Choto said the MDC, which has historically been ZANU-PF’s biggest challenger, “should regroup, re-evaluate … and reshape” its strategy with a focus on ensuring victory in the 2023 elections.

“Nelson Chamisa has time on his hands,” he said.

“He has the changing demography of Zimbabwe on his side, he should not allow himself and the alliance to be swallowed, to legitimise a military government that has come to power not through the ballot but by the barrel of a gun.”

BTS Defy Expectations With Anthemic New Single ‘IDOL’ — And A Nicki Minaj Collab

BigHit Entertainment

What do you do when you’re at the peak of your creative power? When you’ve broken streaming records worldwide, scored the highest Hot 100 debut ever for a K-pop group, and become the first Korean artists to ever top the Billboard 200 albums chart? When you’ve sold out your first U.S. stadium venue in 20 minutes?

When you’re the seven members of BTS, you turn the fuck up.

The global phenoms dropped their highly anticipated new album, Love Yourself: Answer, on Friday (August 24), along with a loud, exuberant visual for their lead single “IDOL.” The release of Answer concludes the group’s critically acclaimed Love Yourself trilogy, which began last year with the release of Love Yourself: Her and continued with the chart-topping full album, Love Yourself: Tear, earlier this year.

With “IDOL,” the Love Yourself era has culminated into a dizzying display of self-love and celebration bolstered by pounding South African beats, traditional Korean instrumentation, and a boisterous house flow. It’s a confident single, one that turns a positive affirmation like “You can’t stop me loving myself” into an anthemic banger fit for a stadium.

Despite their success in the States — rapper Nicki Minaj even features on an alternate version of “IDOL,” undoubtedly meant for U.S. radio play — the colorful visual proves that BTS hasn’t abandoned their roots. They are Korean artists first and foremost.

Beyond its atmospheric production, which features Korean chants and instrumentation often associated with gugak, “IDOL” is riddled with symbolic imagery. From Korean folklore like the moon rabbit and the sacred tiger to the traditional hanboks that Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook wear throughout the video, BTS is celebrating Korean culture on a global scale. More so, they’re celebrating themselves.

“IDOL” makes it clear: BTS are not phenomenons. That’s an ephemeral concept we often tack onto things we find hard to explain. But BTS, driven by their undeniable creativity, passion, and ARMY of fans, is a movement, and “IDOL” is a thundering call to action — to get up, dance, and to love yourself.

2018 Fantasy Football: Best Value Draft Picks

0 of 8

Amazingly, Chris Hogan is a great value as the top WR in New England.

Amazingly, Chris Hogan is a great value as the top WR in New England.Mark Humphrey/Associated Press

For the most part, value picks aren’t overlooked players, but they are underrated. Average draft position might suggest a player you rank as a WR2 is being treated as a WR3. If you take advantage of those perception-related discounts while sticking to your rankings, it will limit the need to overdraft players.

You don’t have to reach for a QB with someone like Philip Rivers available in the double-digit rounds. He’s not a top-12 QB by current ADP, but he can play like one at a cheaper price. That is a value.

Chris Hogan is regularly drafted as a top-30 WR toward the top of the sixth round, so while you may take him as your WR3, his upside as the top WR in New England is easily within the top 20. In fact, he could be in the league-winner category if he continues to dominate targets after Julian Edelman returns from his four-game suspension.

Determining values is about getting the most bang for your buck. Maybe you don’t want to go all in on Jerick McKinnon as your RB2. Instead, you can wait a little longer and take Dion Lewis two or three rounds later with the hope he turns into the golden star of the Titans backfield.

Note: All ADP data and fantasy stats are from FantasyPros. All advanced stats calculated using data from Pro Football Reference. All stats are based on points per reception (PPR) format.

With Doug Baldwin on track for Week 1, he's back in the WR1 conversation.

With Doug Baldwin on track for Week 1, he’s back in the WR1 conversation.Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images

At the beginning of training camp, Doug Baldwin was my No. 8 WR and clearly in the WR1 tier. At the time, Baldwin’s ADP was 30.4/WR12, which put him on the WR1/WR2 borderline, although still a coveted player. Unfortunately, a knee injury that seemed to come out of nowhere at the end of July put a damper on any excitement for Baldwin.

You could easily argue that Baldwin’s ADP before the injury made him a minor value. since he finished the last three seasons at No. 11, No. 8 and No. 10 among WRs. Baldwin’s ceiling might be higher this season than ever before with Jimmy Graham and Paul Richardson leaving more than 33 percent of the team’s target share up for grabs.

Some of those targets will be absorbed by Tyler Lockett, Jaron Brown, Brandon Marshall and Ed Dickson, but Baldwin is clearly the top option and should get a boost in targets as a result.

Baldwin appears to be trending in the right direction for the start of the regular season. According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, head coach Pete Carroll said Baldwin “ramped up conditioning” last week. Carroll added Baldwin is “progressing as hoped” and will “for sure” be ready for Week 1.

Even though Baldwin’s ADP didn’t slip that much since the injury was announced, the value was already there and looks even better at 35.6. Baldwin has WR1 potential, so if he remains a third-round pick, he could turn into the smartest pick of the draft.

Mark Ingram will provide a big boost to the Saints and your fantasy team upon his return.

Mark Ingram will provide a big boost to the Saints and your fantasy team upon his return.Kelvin Kuo/Associated Press

Can a player be a value if he’s completely useless for the first month of the season? In the case of Mark Ingram, that answer may provide the key to a fantasy championship.

We know Ingram will serve a four-game suspension to open the 2018 season, which is a big reason why Alvin Kamara’s ADP is 6.0/RB5. As a rookie, Kamara was the No. 3 RB with Ingram not far behind at No. 6, so both players were strong RB1s. That’s an amazing achievement, and it also showed the Saints’ commitment to their talented backfield.

It’s hard to believe the Saints would mess with a winning formula, which is why Ingram should resume the same active role he played last year. Remember, Kamara had just 120 carries last season and never had more than 12 carries in a game. He had double-digit carries on only five occasions. A lot of that had to do with his average of more than six targets per game and more than five receptions per game.

The Saints have no reason to overwork Kamara on the ground once they have a fresh Ingram back for the fifth game. Ingram could easily be a strong RB2 with the possibility of returning to the RB1 tier if the team wants to replicate how it found success with their backfield in 2017.

You’ll need a plan to cover Ingram’s absence for the first four games, but after that, the boost he should provide could pay big dividends for the rest of the season.

The Tennessee Titans didn't pay Dion Lewis to be a role player.

The Tennessee Titans didn’t pay Dion Lewis to be a role player.Mark Humphrey/Associated Press

Did you know that the No. 15 fantasy RB in 2017 had a total of 19 carries and seven receptions in his first five games of last season? If you think that sounds like a small role, you’re right, but that RB was Dion Lewis, and he wound up with 161 carries and 25 receptions over the next 11 games. Over those 11 games, Lewis was the No. 7 RB.

Even after proving himself to be a great fantasy RB for the AFC champions, Lewis isn’t getting the same respect from fantasy players based on his current ADP. If you want to blame his move to the Tennessee Titans, that’s justified, but don’t give too much credit to Derrick Henry.

The 180 carries Lewis racked up last season accounted for just 40.2 percent of the carry share in New England, but don’t forget about his minimal role over the first five games. In Tennessee, Henry accounted for 39.7 of the carries (176), which wasn’t far behind DeMarco Murray at 41.5 percent (184). Henry deserved a bigger workload, although that just means he was better than Murray and not necessarily a major upgrade.

When the Titans gave Lewis a four-year deal worth $19.8 million with $8.3 million guaranteed at signing, it killed a lot of the excitement for Henry after the team cut Murray. It also sent a message about what the Titans thought of Henry to spend that much on the open market for Lewis. That is not the type of money you pay a part-time RB. Lewis is coming in to play a big role, which makes sense, since he’s a better all-around back than Henry.

In two seasons, Henry has just 24 receptions for 273 yards and a TD on 32 targets. Lewis had 32 receptions for 214 yards and three TDs on 35 targets in 2017 alone. Lewis has a clear advantage as a receiver and should be used as such. Without a regular role in the passing game, Henry’s ceiling just isn’t that high.

The difference between the two players might be shrinking, but Henry is going nearly two rounds earlier at 41.2/RB18. That would be a rise of 29 spots from his No. 37 finish in 2017. Meanwhile, Lewis’ ADP drops him nine places from RB15 in 2017 to RB24 in 2018.

Even if you expect more from Henry and a little less from Lewis compared to last season, Lewis is a better value. Henry needs to make a big jump to justify his ADP, whereas Lewis can have some regression and still beat out his current draft value.

Expect a very busy season out of Chris Hogan.

Expect a very busy season out of Chris Hogan.Jason Behnken/Associated Press

It’s a little baffling that Tom Brady’s top WR for at least the first month of the season can’t crack the top 25 WRs or the first five rounds of fantasy drafts. There’s an easy argument for why Chris Hogan is a player to target at a good and potentially great value.

In August alone, the Patriots moved on from Kenny Britt and Jordan Matthews. Eric Decker was signed after Matthews was cut loose, but he’s coming off just 54 receptions for 563 yards and one TD as part of a weak Titans receiving corps in 2017. Cordarrelle Patterson has 85 receptions over the last three seasons and is more of a returner than a regular contributor on offense. Phillip Dorsett has been a massive bust as a 2015 first-round pick with just 63 receptions in three seasons.

The Patriots still have Rob Gronkowski as the top offensive weapon, so he should at least repeat if not top the 18 percent target share from last year. Julian Edelman missed all of last season with a torn ACL and will serve a four-game suspension to open the regular season. While he could step right back into a busy role, more than 35 percent of last year’s target share is available following the departures of Brandin Cooks and Danny Amendola.

Edelman should get a solid portion of those targets, but Hogan is the name to focus on after he had 10.1 percent (59) in just nine games last season. If he played the entire season, that number would have jumped to almost 18 percent (104 targets). Hogan will get a big opportunity in Edelman’s absence and could carve out a solid role to keep even when Edelman returns to action.

As I covered in this week’s Big Board, the Patriots are battling multiple backfield injuries with Rex Burkhead (knee) and Sony Michel (knee). Plus, they’ve talked to Hogan about a contract extension, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.. This all adds up to a potential top-20 season for Hogan, which might be conservative. Don’t underestimate what it means to be Tom Brady’s top WR.

Case Keenum should provide a boost to Emmanuel Sanders' fantasy value.

Case Keenum should provide a boost to Emmanuel Sanders’ fantasy value.Dustin Bradford/Getty Images

You could make a case for both Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas as values, but Thomas still costs a fourth-round pick, which is a strong investment. Instead, we’ll examine how Sanders can make a run at the top-25 fantasy WRs in 2018 even though his ADP puts him firmly in the WR3 tier outside of the top 30.

Last season, Sanders was limited to 12 games by a nagging ankle injury. He, along with the rest of the Broncos offense, saw a dip in fantasy value due to poor QB play. He was limited to just 47 receptions for 555 yards and two TDs on 92 targets. Despite missing four games, the 92 targets accounted for 16.6 percent of the team’s target share. If healthy, that number could have jumped over 22 percent.

With his ankle injury behind him and Case Keenum taking over the QB spot, Sanders’ two biggest issues from 2017 have been rectified. From 2014-2016, Sanders finished as high as fifth and no lower than 20th among fantasy WRs. At his current ADP, he wouldn’t even have to get all the way back to the production of those three seasons to be a valuable fantasy asset.

Other than Thomas and Sanders, the Broncos don’t have any established talent in their receiving corps, so both players have a chance to see at least 20 percent of the target share. If Sanders stays healthy, the upgrade in QB and a larger target share would give him a legit chance to find his way back into the top 25 fantasy WRs.

6 of 8

Jamison Crowder may already be the preferred target of Alex Smith.

Jamison Crowder may already be the preferred target of Alex Smith.Wesley Hitt/Getty Images

You don’t have to think much of Jamison Crowder to recognize that an ADP putting him at WR37 doesn’t make much sense with a WR33 finish in 2017. He was able to do that despite just two games with five receptions and 50 yards in the first seven weeks of the season. He improved significantly in the second half and was the No. 21 fantasy WR from Weeks 9-17.

A little bit more consistency out of Crowder is one way to improve on last year’s finish and outplay his current ADP. He has a good chance to find that consistency with Alex Smith taking over for Kirk Cousins. Even though Crowder posted top-35 finishes the last two seasons with Cousins, it always felt like he was capable of more.

Smith made big plays with Tyreek Hill in Kansas City, but Crowder is more of a fit for his style. Considering Paul Richardson is more of a deep threat and Josh Doctson has battled multiple injuries and inconsistency, Crowder seems primed to become Smith’s preferred target. It wouldn’t be out of the question to see Crowder improve on the 19.3 percent target share he had in 2017.

The loss of Derrius Guice will put more responsibility on the arm of Smith and the passing game as a whole. Chris Thompson and Jordan Reed should be consistent options if healthy, but there’s more than enough to go around for Crowder to get his and find his way inside the top 30 fantasy WRs.

Don't underestimate the rapport between Jack Doyle and Andrew Luck.

Over the last two seasons, only eight players finished among the top 13 TEs both years. They were Jason Witten, Jimmy Graham, Travis Kelce, Kyle Rudolph, Zach Ertz, Cameron Brate, Delanie Walker and Jack Doyle. That may not seem like much, but a lack of consistency and depth has been a problem at the TE position for years.

Doyle was able to post a TE7 finish in 2017 without Andrew Luck. His 22.9 percent target shared trailed only T.Y. Hilton, who finished with 23.1 percent. The departures of Donte Moncrief and Kamar Aiken leave more than 19 percent up for grabs. Ryan Grant and Eric Ebron should cut into a decent portion of that target share. However, the pie could get significantly bigger.

Without Luck, the Colts had 487 pass attempts, 469 of which came from Jacoby Brissett, who was with the team for less than a month before starting his first game. In 2016, the Colts had 584 pass attempts with Luck starting 15 games. A healthy Luck should provide an uptick in pass attempts to much closer to the 2016 totals than the 2017 totals.

Familiarity is another positive attribute for Doyle’s fantasy value. Other than Hilton, Doyle is the only Colt to catch at least 20 passes from Luck in a season. The additions of Grant and Ebron are significant, but with Luck returning from an extended layoff, don’t underestimate the comfort and rapport he has with Doyle.

You won’t find a lot of value at TE, so consider Doyle a good value if you’re waiting a while to grab your TE. He can find his way into the top 10 by the end of the season.

You'll rarely be let down by Philip Rivers.

If Philip Rivers finishes at his ADP of QB14, it will tie his worst season of the last five years. Last season, he was the No. 8 fantasy QB. and other than the QB14 finish in 2016, he hasn’t been worse than QB12 since 2013.

Rivers isn’t the only example of a QB you can grab late and throw right into your starting lineup, but he does have the most consistent fantasy numbers of similar QBs going this late in drafts. He’s made a career of getting the most out of his receiving corps, regardless of what kind of talent he’s throwing to in a given year. Losing Hunter Henry to a torn ACL was a huge bummer, but it won’t kill the fantasy prospects of Rivers.

A WR trio of Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams and Mike Williams in addition to Melvin Gordon in the backfield still gives Rivers a strong group to work with this season, Mike Williams is a potential positive wild card after a back injury delayed the start of his pro career last year and cost him any chance of a productive season. The Chargers spent a first-round pick on him last April, so they clearly believe he has a lot of talent and trust Rivers to get it out of him.

Tyrell Williams has been a nice find as a reliable target for Rivers, and Allen is one of the best in the game after finishing as the No. 3 fantasy WR in 2017. Put your confidence in Rivers to get the most out the talent around him. He will outplay his ADP.
