Ron DeSantis is already in hot water less than a day after winning the GOP nomination in the Florida gubernatorial race because of a racist remark he made about his upcoming general election opponent, democrat Andrew Gillum.
The Trump-endorsed DeSantis stepped it in big time on Wednesday morning during an appearance on Fox News in which he said that Florida shouldn’t “monkey this up” by electing Gillum, who is black.
No, really. He actually said it.
It’s hard to believe in 2018 that white people still claim ignorance around using “monkey” or “ape” in connotation with African-Americans when the use of the word has a had an incredibly long association as a racial epithet.
But here we are and DeSantis’ camp is already back-tracking from the comment.
DeSantis’ spox tells me this is something the congressman says “frequently” to express something that was messed up or not done right.
Spox says it “had nothing to do with race or anything like that” but just talking about the situation in Florida. #FLGOV https://t.co/Eg6I3W9ivx

Just… how? Not to bite on John Oliver but how is this still a thing? There’s no excuse for this and Twitter was quick to call DeSantis into account.
.@RonDeSantisFL goes on TV and calls Gillum “articulate” and says he “performed well” during debates, but that we don’t need to “monkey this up” by electing @AndrewGillum Democratic chairwoman Terrie Rizzo blasts DeSantis and says he is using”racist dog whistles.”

Remember earlier this summer, when someone went on Fox News and told Joel Payne, a Democratic strategist who happens to be black, that he was “out of his cotton-picking mind”?
The was David Bossie, who is a member of Ron DeSantis’ national finance team https://t.co/4jyY71Xl0p

As a Floridian, it was my hope this Governor’s race would be about the pressing issues facing our state -rising tides, algae outbreak, trade, economy, jobs. I had hoped it would not be one were racism was front and center. That hope lasted all of 10 hours. https://t.co/KeBENvMovw

He called him “articulate” then said don’t “monkey” this up. They’ve only been running against each other for about 12 hrs in Florida.

He is not, he knows exactly what he said. When is the last time you heard that word in any sentence?

As noted in one of the tweets above, David Bossie, president of Citizens United and a member of DeSantis’ team, was the guy who used the phrase “cotton-pickin’ mind” towards a black panel member on Fox News earlier this summer.
When the same group of people keep doing the same damn thing, it’s a lot harder to believe it’s a mistake rather than the blatant racism is clearly is.
