Warriors’ Kevon Looney Will Play in Game 4 vs. Raptors Despite Rib Injury

TORONTO, ONTARIO - MAY 30: Kevon Looney #5 of the Golden State Warriors dunks the ball against the Toronto Raptors in the second half during Game One of the 2019 NBA Finals at Scotiabank Arena on May 30, 2019 in Toronto, Canada. Golden State Warriors forward/center Kevon Looney, who missed Game 3 of the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors with a non-displaced first costal cartilage fracture, will play in Game 4.

Head coach Steve Kerr revealed the news to reporters in the hours leading to the game’s 9 p.m. ET start on Friday at Oracle Arena.

“He’s dying to play, so we’ll give him a shot and see what he’s got,” Kerr told the media.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported earlier Friday that Looney was lobbying the Warriors to play:

Ramona Shelburne @ramonashelburne

The other day @TimBontemps reported there was a chance Kevon Looney plays in the Finals w/ a fracture near his collarbone. Today he’s listed as questionable in the injury report for Game 4. Word is he’s been lobbying hard to play as the doctors believe the injury won’t get worse

Looney suffered the injury in Game 2, and he left after seeing only 10 minutes of action. The Warriors initially declared him out indefinitely.

A Looney return is a huge boost to the Warriors. The third-year pro has averaged 7.2 points on 73.0 percent shooting in addition to 2.6 rebounds during this year’s playoffs. He’s been remarkably efficient during his 20.6 minutes per game and has come through in the clutch when the Dubs have needed him most.

Namely, Looney had 12 points and 14 boards in a Western Conference Finals-clinching win over the Portland Trail Blazers. He also scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the Western Conference Semifinals-clinching victory against the Houston Rockets.

Looney will likely back up center DeMarcus Cousins, who returned for Game 1 of the Finals after missing 14 contests with a quad injury. Cousins, who came off the bench in the series opener, has started the last two games.

The Warriors have suffered a litany of injuries but appear to finally be getting healthy for the most part. In addition to Cousins’ and Looney’s returns, Klay Thompson is back for Game 4 after missing Game 3 with a left hamstring strain.

Kevin Durant, who has been out with a strained right calf since Game 5 of the Houston series, will not return for Game 4. However, Kerr told reporters that the team hopes the 10-time All-Star can come back for Game 5 or 6:

The Athletic @TheAthleticSF

Kerr says the Warriors are still hopeful Kevin Durant can return for Game 5 or 6, but he won’t be giving any updates on planned activities in between games anymore. https://t.co/6MmU9kO8GC

The Warriors are five-point favorites entering Game 4, per Caesars Palace.

GM Brian Gaine Fired by Texans After Only 17 Months on the Job

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - FEBRUARY 27: Brian Gaine general manager of the Houston Texans is seen at the 2019 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 28, 2019 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Michael Hickey/Getty Images)

Michael Hickey/Getty Images

The Houston Texans announced Friday that they have parted ways with general manager Brian Gaine:

Texans PR @TexansPR

Statement from #Texans Chairman and CEO Cal McNair on Brian Gaine: https://t.co/tpPJvR0cYB

Senior Vice President of Football Administration Chris Olsen will hold the general manager job in an interim capacity while the team looks for a long-term solution.

The Texans signed Gaine to a five-year contract on January 13, 2018, after spending one season as the Buffalo Bills‘ vice president of player personnel.

He was director of pro personnel and then director of player personnel in Houston from 2014-2016 under general manager Rick Smith. Gaine also worked seven seasons for former NFL head coach Bill Parcells, beginning in 1999.

Gaine took over for Smith as the Texans’ general manager when the latter executive took a leave of absence to care for his wife, Tiffany, who passed away from breast cancer in January.

The Texans’ decision is quite surprising, as Stephanie Stradley, John McClain and Aaron Wilson of Houston Chronicle noted:

Stephanie Stradley @StephStradley

WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! https://t.co/v7OmfbaV8o

Aaron Wilson @AaronWilson_NFL

Thoughts on Texans’ firing Brian Gaine: Surprising and shocking move considering the close relationship frequently cited by Bill O’Brien and Gaine and lockstep on personnel moves. Gaine worked for years to become a general manager and such a short tenure is completely unexpected

McClain called the move “stunning.”

Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle provided the inside scoop, hinting at a power struggle behind the scenes. He further criticized Houston for its hiring process a year-and-a-half ago:

Brian T. Smith @ChronBrianSmith

This move has been brewing for a while. O’Brien won the power battle with Rick Smith. Got the GM he initially wanted in Gaine. Now with Easterby, O’Brien has even more power and has the McNairs full backing.

Brian T. Smith @ChronBrianSmith

#Texans zeroed in on Gaine after Rick Smith’s departure. Hiring — and hiring process — looks silly just 18 months later.

Easterby is Jack Easterby, who the Texans hired as their vice president of player development in April. He spent the past six years with the New England Patriots as the team development director/character coach from 2013-2018. Smith predicted a power rise for Easterby:

Brian T. Smith @ChronBrianSmith

Jack Easterby expected to take a more prominent role in #Texans’ organization. Gaine goes. Easterby rises.

Regardless of any reasoning inside the Texans’ headquarters, the move is still a head-scratcher.

Gaine just led the team’s 2019 draft and free-agency efforts. Also, Houston won the AFC South with an 11-5 record last season. The team looked strong on both sides of the ball and stands as a favorite to make the postseason yet again.

Furthermore, the Texans’ long-term investment in Gaine seemed to indicate significant confidence in him doing the job.

Regardless, Houston is in the market for a new general manager, and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network wondered whether Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas could be in the mix:

Tom Pelissero @TomPelissero

Seventeen months ago, the #Texans put in a request to interview Joe Douglas. The #Eagles blocked it. Douglas now is a candidate for the #Jets job … and in Houston again?

Douglas is currently a favorite for the New York Jets‘ open GM job, per Ralph Vacchiano of Sportsnet New York.

Houston opens the 2019 regular season at the New Orleans Saints on Monday, Sept. 9.

GM Jon Horst, Bucks Agree to Reported 3-Year Contract Extension After ECF Run

MILWAUKEE, WI - JUNE 19: Jon Horst speaks to the media as the Milwaukee Bucks new General Manager on June 19, 2017 at the Milwaukee Bucks Schlitz Park Offices in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Bucks announced a multi-year contract extension for general manager Jon Horst on Friday.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported earlier Friday that Horst signed for three additional seasons.

Gery Woelfel, a former Bucks beat writer for the Journal Times, reported on his own website that Horst was looking for a raise with one season left on a three-year deal signed in 2017.

Milwaukee finished a league-best 60-22 and made the Eastern Conference Finals this season.

Horst, whom Wojnarowski called an Executive of the Year candidate, hired ex-Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer to lead Milwaukee in 2017.

Budenholzer has led the team to a 104-60 record in two seasons, and its 60-22 mark last year was the team’s best record since the 1980-81 campaign. The Bucks also made the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 18 years.

Horst also made a few key player transactions that helped lead to the Bucks’ 60-win campaign.

First, he traded for Phoenix Suns guard Eric Bledsoe in 2017.

The nine-year veteran, who averaged 15.5 points, 5.5 assists and 1.5 steals last season, ranked ninth among qualified point guards in defensive real plus-minus, per ESPN.com.

Second, Horst signed center Brook Lopez to a one-year deal this past offseason. Lopez was a perfect complement to the remaining Bucks starters, as his ability to space the floor with his three-point shooting (36.5 percent) helped Milwaukee finish first in points per game.

Horst, 36, has been with Milwaukee since 2008 when he joined the team as its Director of Basketball Operations.

Miss Game Of Thrones? Meet Your New Pop Culture Obsessions

Netflix / HBO / Starz

If you’re still grieving over the loss of Game of Thrones, you’re not alone. Plenty of viewers are still trying to figure out where to go next. What do you watch after enjoying eight years of one of TV’s most addictive dramas? That’s where we come in.

Whether you’re still fruitlessly browsing through titles to find something to scratch that same itch or you just want to try something new, we’ve got a selection of nine shows that we’re confident will very quickly become the next best show you can’t stop talking about — each hand-picked for their connection to the mega-popular HBO series.

We’ve got drama, fearless women, character cliques, and just about anything you could ask for, even including a few murder mysteries. There are established shows a few seasons in that you can happily binge, and also a few new series about to light up our streaming queues.

With these shows, you’ll be over that final episode in no time:

  1. Riverdale

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Drama; complicated relationships; complex storylines; powerful women; a leading man who knows nothing; murder; scheming

What’s it about? It’s all about the drama, baby. The fresh-faced cast of Archie Comics is plunged into a dark, sexy world of murder, betrayal, and intrigue. This isn’t your grandparents’ Betty and Veronica, either – Riverdale has taken the perennially pure Archie universe and spread dirt all over it to powerful effect.

The show works to slowly peel back the layers of a seemingly idyllic small town to reveal its seedy underbelly. Everyone’s favorite high school football player Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) navigates adolescence alongside best friend Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), and wealthy socialite Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes). Oh, and the entirety of Riverdale High is forced to face the death of one of its beloved students: Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines).

Jason’s sister Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) initially works to uncover the secret behind his death, but the show quickly transforms into a much more nuanced mystery beyond that — complete with appearances by some beloved Archie characters like Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) and Kevin Keller (Casey Cott). If you’re not sold already then we have two words for you: musical episodes.

Where to watch: You can catch up with current seasons of Riverdale on Netflix and the CW app.

  2. Black Mirror

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Dark storytelling; intriguing plot threads; unhappy endings; stunt casting

What’s it about? Black Mirror is an anthology series, much like The Twilight Zone, which deals with the what-ifs of modern technology. Each episode is an independent story (though some have references to others), and usually deals with a singular concept of technology gone wrong.

With how close we are to the precipice of the Internet, social media, and smartphones ruling our lives, Black Mirror succeeds because it projects just what might happen if we teeter off the edge right into techno-insanity. Each episode is a chilling look into the maybes of tomorrow and just how alone we can be despite the world being more connected than ever. It’s also rife with some exceedingly dark subject matter, and plenty of unexpected character deaths and unhappy endings.

Where to watch: You can stream all seasons of Black Mirror, including the spinoff Black Mirror: Bandersnatch on Netflix.

  3. Deadwood

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Gritty action; addictive plot; murder; betrayal; memorable dialogue; superb character acting

What’s it about? This critically-acclaimed Western series is set in 1870s Deadwood, South Dakota. Over three seasons, it weaved an intricate look at life in the mid-late 19th century and featured the stories of historical figures like Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and more. Series creator David Milch used diaries and newspapers from the era to paint an accurate portrait of the time, and it remains one of the most evocative portrayals of the Old West.

Unfortunately, despite the acclaim during its original run from 2004 to 2006, Deadwood was canceled. In the time since, it’s developed a huge fanbase and concluded properly in the form of a two-hour film that premiered last month. It’s all come full circle.

Where to watch: You can stream the entirety of Deadwood and its accompanying film via the HBO Now app and Amazon Prime Video.

  4. Westworld

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Mysteries to unravel; drama; high production values; murder; grisly deaths; strong blond heroines who may or may not actually be villains

What’s it about? Westworld is a theme park in the near future that allows visitors to check out a realistic recreation of the Wild West. The park is inhabited by androids which both serve the guests of the park and as characters in a multi-day narrative meant to serve to immerse them in the western atmosphere. At the end of their pre-programmed story, the androids have their memories wiped and the whole thing starts over.

While the androids are programmed not to harm guests in any way, a few have started to retain memories from past loops. Because they’re able to learn and retain information, they begin to become self-aware. Westworld follows this journey and the consequences of the androids learning their entire existence is a lie.

Where to watch: Westworld is available to stream on the HBO Now app. Season 3 will premiere in 2020.

  5. Euphoria

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Intrigue; sex; intense character interactions; a great soundtrack

What’s it about? Though Euphoria has yet to air, it’s an upcoming HBO series that you’ll absolutely want to keep an eye on. Zendaya, in a tragic and mesmerizing performance, takes the lead in a show that follows a group of high school students as they struggle to navigate teenage life. They grapple with the same kinds of universal questions that pop up throughout adolescence — as well as love, sex, friendship, and drugs. But Degrassi this is not; the show aims to depict today’s teens as they really are: messy, complicated, and addicted.

Judging by its first trailer, Euphoria finds Zendaya’s character in a rough place in her young life. Based on the Israeli show of the same name, the show is executive produced by Drake and will feature a star-studded cast (and soundtrack). It should also be rife with an excess of uncomfortable moments and good characters doing bad things — and we all know Game of Thrones had that in droves.

Where to watch: Euphoria will be available to stream via the HBO Now app starting on June 16.

  6. Dark

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Mystery; murder; supernatural elements; multiple storylines; conspiracies; picturesque scenery

What’s it about? Dark is, well, exactly what its name implies. When children start disappearing from the fictional German city of Winden, the mystery begins expelling several skeletons from closets — and taking you on a multiple decade-spanning thrill ride. It follows four families that find their destinies intertwining across 1953, 1986, and the present in 2019. We won’t spoil anything further, but it touches on double lives, supernatural elements, and mental health in ways that are unexpected and unforgettable.

Where to watch: You can stream the entirety of Dark via Netflix.

  7. The Society

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Shaky alliances; scheming; supernatural elements; addictive storytelling; cliffhangers

What’s it about? What would happen if, one day, all the parents in the world disappeared? The Society, a modern-day reimagining of the 1954 Nobel Prize-winning novel Lord of the Flies, examines what happens when a group of teenagers discover they’ve been left alone to their own devices, forming a society (as the title implies, of course) with dubious intentions.

After the teens wake up in a strange approximation of their regular neighborhood without the influence of their parents, they must work together to rebuild a life for themselves as they knew it, all the while trying to parse details about where they are and how they got there to begin with. Of course, this means alliances are formed, partnerships are broken, and people are dying to keep particular secrets. You never know just quite who you should trust — but it makes for a great watch.

Where to watch: You can stream The Society via Netflix.

  8. His Dark Materials

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Supernatural elements; fantasy setting; secrets; scheming; source material; fantastical beast companions

What’s it about? This upcoming fantasy series explores an alternate world where all humans have their own animal companions called daemons. But they’re not just any animals, they’re actually manifestations of the soul. Protagonist Lyra (Dafne Keen) is an orphan who stumbles upon a dangerous secret involving Lord Asriel (James McCoy) that takes her on a twisting, strange journey which finds her uncovering a web of kidnappings and their link to a substance called Dust.

Based on the popular novel series by Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials will premiere on HBO later this year, giving you plenty of time to catch up with the books in the event you want a head start. And unlike George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, this book series is actually complete.

Where to watch: His Dark Materials will be available to stream via the HBO Now app when it begins airing later in 2019.

  9. The Spanish Princess

Game of Thrones fans will appreciate: Perilous relationships; treachery; romance; sex; historical setting; great cinematography; forbidden lovers; thrones

What’s it about? It probably makes perfect sense to watch a period drama after Game of Thrones, since it’s closest in tone and setting to the fantastical series, and The Spanish Princess should tick all the boxes you’re looking for nicely. Braids. Crowns. Costumes. It has all of that in spades, plus a little romance. Following the teenage princess Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Spanish rulers Isabella and Ferdinand, it follows Catherine’s journey to England where she meets her husband-to-be: Arthur, Prince of Wales.

At first, she’s thrilled, thinking she’s been receiving romantic letters from Arthur, when all this time it’s actually been his brother Harry, Duke of York. Plans suddenly change, and after Arthur is out of the picture, Catherine sets her sights on another romantic suitor. As you can imagine, complications ensue.

Where to watch: You can stream The Spanish Princess via Starz.

Ex-College Basketball Coach Lamont Evans Sentenced to 3 Months for Taking Bribes

Former Oklahoma State Cowboys and South Carolina Gamecocks assistant basketball coach Lamont Evans received a three-month prison sentence Friday for accepting bribes to push players toward certain managers and financial advisers.

Larry Neumeister of the Associated Press reported U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos also ordered Evans to forfeit $22,000 and work 100 hours of community service during the sentencing in New York City.

The 41-year-old former Drake University guard called it “one of the saddest days of my life” as he exited the courtroom after telling Ramos he found “an easy way to make money,” per Neumeister.

“In hindsight and upon reflection, I knew that it was wrong,” Evans said.

He pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit bribery in January after admitting he accepted $22,000 in bribes during his time at Oklahoma State and South Carolina.

“I now know that accepting those funds in exchange for introducing them to any one player was wrong and violated the law,” Evans said at the time.

Prosecutors in the case had initially aimed for an 18-month prison term.

Evans became the third former college basketball assistant sentenced in New York City this week.

Tony Bland (USC Trojans) received two years of probation and 100 hours of community service, while Emanuel “Book” Richardson (Arizona Wildcats) was sentenced to three months in prison.

Chuck Person (Auburn Tigers) is the final assistant awaiting his sentence as part of the FBI’s investigation into alleged corruption in college athletics.

US starts withdrawing Turkey from F-35 programme over Russia deal

The United States Pentagon has notified Turkey that it is canceling its purchase of F-35 fighter jets if the Turkish government goes ahead with the purchase of a Russia‘s S-400 missile defence system.

Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has sent a letter notifying Turkey that all training of Turkish pilots will also end as of July 31. And all Turkish personnel connected to the F-35 programme must leave the country by the end of that month.

Shanahan’s letter explicitly states there will be “no new F-35 training”. It says there were 34 students scheduled for F-35 training later this year.

“This training will not occur because we are suspending Turkey from the F-35 programme; there are no longer requirements to gain proficiencies on the systems,” according to an attachment to the letter that is titled, “Unwinding Turkey’s Participation in the F-35 Program.”

In his letter, Shanahan also warned Ankara that its deal with Moscow risked undermining its ties to NATO, hurting the Turkish economy and creating over-dependence on Russia.

“You still have the option to change course on the S-400,” Shanahan wrote.

The two NATO allies have sparred publicly for months over Turkey’s order for Russia’s S-400 air defence system, which Washington says poses a threat to the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 stealthy fighters, which Turkey also plans to buy.

The US has said Turkey cannot have both, but had avoided taking steps to curtail or halt planned training of Turkish pilots in the programme, a reprisal that could be seen as an embarrassment in Turkey.

Russia: ‘Everything is on track with the Turks’

The announcement came as the head of Russia’s state-owned conglomerate Rostec said Moscow would begin delivering the S-400 air defence systems to Turkey.

“Everything is on track with the Turks. I hope that we will begin to deliver in about two months,” Sergei Chemezov told NTV channel, according to Russian news agencies on Friday.

“The credit money has been spent, the technology was produced. And we completed training of all the military personnel,” he said.

If Turkey were removed from the F-35 programme, it would be one of the most significant ruptures in recent history in the relationship between the two allies, experts said.

Turkish officials have not immediately commented on the Pentagon’s letter.

Turkish President Recept Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday it was “out of the question” for Turkey to back away from its deal with Moscow.

Erdogan said the United States had not “given us an offer as good as the S-400s”.

The Turkish lira declined as much as 1.5 percent on Friday before recovering some losses. The currency has shed nearly 10 percent of its value against the dollar this year in part on fraying diplomatic ties and the risk of US sanctions if Turkey accepts delivery of the S-400s.

‘Graceful wind down’

Turkey is one of the core partners in the F-35 programme and expressed an interest in buying 100 of the fighters, which would have a total value of $9bn at current prices.

Turkish companies produce some 937 parts of the F-35, largely for the aircraft’s landing gear and centre fuselage, the Pentagon says. The US is now planning to move that production elsewhere, ending Turkey’s manufacturing role by early next year.

The Pentagon believes that it can minimise the effects on the broader programme if Turkey abides by the US timeline.

“What we are doing is working to do a very disciplined and graceful wind down,” Ellen Lord, an under secretary of defence, told reporters at the Pentagon.

But if Turkey were removed from the F-35 programme, the ramifications would be felt far beyond the Turkish air force.

Strains in ties between the US and Ankara already extend beyond the F-35 to include conflicting strategy in Syria, Iran sanctions and the detention of US consular staff in Turkey.

FTC takes tech scrutiny to heart of Silicon Valley

Federal Trade Commission Building

The past year has brought signs that the FTC is increasingly interested in taking another crack at tech. | Alex Brandon/AP Photo

Technology

The FTC’s outreach is a visible sign of the approach the commission is taking toward antitrust scrutiny of tech.

The FTC has sent top antitrust officials into the heart of Silicon Valley to seek out complaints about anti-competitive behavior, an unusual move that offers yet another hint about the government’s growing interest in policing the industry’s giants.

The weeklong tour included private meetings between leaders of the FTC’s new technology task force and more than a dozen industry players to discuss the state of their businesses and market competition challenges, an FTC official familiar with the issue told POLITICO. During that same trip, the head of the FTC’s bureau of competition made a direct plea to attendees at an antitrust conference in Palo Alto, Calif. to share any evidence of anti-competitive tech mergers, according to a copy of his remarks.

Story Continued Below

The outreach — details of which were previously unreported — comes as both the FTC and Justice Department have shown a surge of interest in taking a serious look at years of complaints about the dominant role that companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon are playing in big slices of the economy and Americans’ everyday lives. Those include disclosures in the past week of an arrangement in which the Justice Department has claimed jurisdiction over any potential antitrust probes of Google and Apple, while the FTC would be free to do the same with Facebook and Amazon.

Neither agency has announced plans to launch an antitrust investigation, but such discussions can be the first step toward an active probe. The FTC has also spent the past year pursuing an investigation of alleged privacy violations by Facebook, which has said it expects a fine of as much as $5 billion.

The FTC’s outreach at the May 22 conference in Palo Alto, organized by the publication Global Competition Review, was one visible sign of the approach the commission is taking toward antitrust scrutiny after creating the technology task force in February. The mandate of the 17-person task force, mainly made up of FTC staff attorneys, is to investigate anti-competitive conduct and review previously approved mergers.

Bruce Hoffman, director of the FTC competition bureau, told attendees at the Palo Alto event that the agency would be “keeping our ear to the ground” to learn about mergers and other anti-competitive behavior that might not reach officials in Washington. Hoffman said he’s aware of concerns that large companies are buying potential rivals to squelch competition but he has yet to see good economic evidence of a widespread problem.

“We need your help,” Hoffman told the gathering. “Participants in these various industries might well be best situated to spot problematic acquisitions and bring them to our attention.”

Patricia Galvan, who heads the FTC task force, spoke on a panel at the same conference, and two other leaders of the unit, Gail Levine and Krisha Cerilli, were also in Silicon Valley at that time, according to current and former FTC officials familiar with the trip. They met privately with industry players over several days around the conference, said the officials, who characterized the meetings as listening sessions.

The current FTC official told POLITICO that competition enforcers rarely travel outside Washington to hear from industry participants and the task force’s participation in the Palo Alto antitrust conference offered an opportunity to take such meetings to the nation’s technology capital.

“Because small companies and investors fear retaliation or some kind of financial detriment by speaking up, it’s important for antitrust enforcers to reach out and make it easy for complainants to present their information confidentially with the protection of the government. It sounds like the FTC is enabling that type of behavior,” said Gene Kimmelman, a former DOJ official who now runs the advocacy group Public Knowledge.

Former FTC Chairman William Kovacic, a Republican, noted that the agency is undoubtedly feeling political pressure to act in the face of Washington’s increasing distaste for big technology companies.

“That task force is going to be the group that will spearhead the new cases, and you can’t imagine making a basic decision about what companies to pursue without consulting [the task force], Kovacic said.

“You’re going to be measured by what you deliver for these type of issues,” he added. “To create the task force pushes you in the direction of doing something.”

The FTC has spent years dogged by a reputation for being reluctant to offer aggressive policing of the big search, social media and online commerce companies, even as they have come to dominate ever greater shares of the U.S. and world economies.

During the Obama administration, the FTC conducted a probe of Google’s search practices but closed the matter in 2013 without taking any enforcement action, a move that drew criticism the agency had choked. The Wall Street Journal reported two years later that FTC staff had wanted to pursue an antitrust lawsuit against Google, only to have the commissioners shoot down the idea.

That left the antitrust enforcement field largely in the hands of European regulators, who have hit Google with penalties totaling nearly $10 billion. But the past year has brought signs that the FTC is increasingly interested in taking another crack at tech.

That includes the FTC’s negotiation of a possible data privacy settlement with Facebook, with a potential fine of up to $5 billion, which would be the largest in the agency’s history. That investigation was triggered by last year’s revelation that the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which worked on President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, had improperly obtained personal information on tens of millions of Facebook users.

The FTC has also shown new assertiveness on antitrust: Last month, it won a lawsuit against semiconductor giant Qualcomm in which the FTC accused the company of engaging in anti-competitive behavior to maintain a monopoly over certain processors used in mobile phones. Qualcomm is appealing the ruling.

The tech industry’s critics have already offered ideas for how the commission should pursue its next targets, including a potential antitrust probe of Amazon.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) proposed legislation as part of her 2020 presidential campaign that would bar companies like Amazon from selling goods in a digital marketplace they control, arguing it gives them an unfair advantage over other merchants on the platform. Amazon has denied engaging is bad conduct and argues its e-commerce operation helps small businesses attract more customers.

Amazon has also rapidly expanded into other lines of business, often through acquisitions like its FTC-approved purchase of grocery chain Whole Foods in 2017. Its lucrative Amazon Web Services division is a leading provider of cloud computing services to corporations and governments alike, providing technology that ranges from data storage to facial recognition software.

‘You all go’: Algerians rally for change after elections scrapped

Thousands of people have gathered in the Algerian capital calling on interim President Abdelkader Bensalah to quit after he vowed to stay in power until a new head of state was elected.

Carrying banners reading “You all go” and “We need new figures”, protesters packed central Algiers on Friday for the 16th consecutive week demanding the removal of the ruling elite.

Bensalah, speaker of the upper house, was elected by parliament to lead the North African country when President Abdelaziz Bouteflika quit on April 2 in the face of widespread protests against his 20-year rule.

Elections were set for July 4, under constitutional rules that state a presidential election must be held within 90 days, but Algeria‘s constitutional council on Sunday called off the vote citing a lack of candidates.

No new date has been set, and the council has suggested Bensalah’s mandate be extended. The 77-year-old politician on Thursday called for “inclusive dialogue” to prepare for an election.

But the protesters have been staunchly against presidential polls being held as long as the current leaders, which they accuse of having links to Bouteflika, remain in power.

One banner held up by protesters read: “Bensalah go”.

They also called on army chief General Ahmed Gaid Salah – who has become the country’s power broker – to “clear off” as police deployed massively across the centre of the capital.

“We will not tolerate Bensalah,” protester Ismail Omrani said. “He will not remain the head of the state as he said yesterday.”

Hamid, a civil servant, added that any dialogue “should be with the real holder of power, and that means the army. Bensalah does not make the decisions.”

‘Masquerade’

Dalia Ghanem Yazbeck, a researcher at the Carnegie Middle East Centre based in Beirut, told the AFP news agency that the protesters won points with the cancellation of the July 4 elections.

But on the other hand, she said, the planned polls “were a non-event because from a logistical point of view it would have been impossible to organise the elections”.

While Gaid Salah had pushed for the polls, July 4 looked increasingly implausible as no major party nominated a candidate.

Algeria protests

A major obstacle emerged when some mayors and magistrates said they would not take part in organising the elections.

The two unknown figures who put themselves forward – Abdelhakim Hamadi and Hamid Touahri – had not been expected to gather the necessary 60,000 voter signatures to validate their bid for office.

Yazbeck said: “No one wants to run in the election and take part in this masquerade, and it is clear that the authorities cannot agree on a candidate to represent them.”

“The authorities are improvising. There are no long term solutions and despite what they thought, the [protest] movement is not petering out,” she added.

Algerians have been demonstrating since February after Bouteflika announced plans to seek a fifth term in office.

Since his resignation, the army, the country’s most powerful institution, has met a number of protesters’ demands including launching anti-corruption probes against people suspected of misuse of power and public funds.

Last month, Bouteflika’s youngest brother, Said, and two former intelligence chiefs were placed in custody by a military judge over allegations of “harming the army’s authority and plotting against state authority”.

At least five businessmen, including the country’s richest man, Issad Rebrab, who is active in the food industry and sugar refining, have been arrested for alleged involvement in corruption scandals.
