Sudan military admits it ordered brutal crackdown on protesters

Sudan’s ruling military council on Thursday for the first time admitted it ordered the dispersal of Khartoum sit-in, which left scores dead, as US and African diplomats stepped up efforts for a solution to the country’s political crisis.

Protesters had staged the weeks-long sit-in outside army headquarters in Khartoum forcing long-time leader Omar al-Bashir from power in April.

But the pro-democracy protesters have continued their agitation demanding the military council, which took over from al-Bashir, hand power to a civilian-led transitional body.

On June 3, days after talks between protest leaders and the military collapsed, armed men in military fatigues broke up the camp in an operation that doctors said left 120 people dead. Doctors said that at least 40 bodies were recovered from the Nile river.

The health ministry has put the death toll for that day at 61 nationwide.

The military council had “decided to disperse the sit-in”, said spokesman Shamseddine Kabbashi.

“We ordered the commanders to come up with a plan to disperse this sit-in. They made a plan and implemented it … but we regret that some mistakes happened.”

Later at the end of the conference Kabbashi said that the plan was to clear a nearby area called Colombia, usually inhabited by drug peddlers, but then “we regret what happened”.

He said the findings of an investigation into the incident would be released on Saturday.

Diplomatic efforts

Kabbashi also claimed “more than one coup attempt had been planned” against the military council but were prevented in recent days, with “two groups of officers” taken into custody.

Kabbashi’s comments came after protesters, who had staged a nationwide civil disobedience movement to demand civilian rule, agreed on Tuesday to end the campaign and resume talks with the generals.

Traffic jams have returned to downtown Khartoum and some shops in the capital’s famous gold market began to reopen on Thursday as more residents and office employees ventured out.

Fewer troops and members of the feared paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, accused by protesters and rights groups of leading the crackdown, were on the streets in downtown Khartoum, according to an AFP correspondent who toured parts of the capital.

But they were deployed in force in the northern district of Bahari, a bastion of protests against the military council and Bashir, who on Thursday was charged with corruption.

“Today is my first day to work after the campaign ended but I’m not in the mood to work,” Suheir Hassan, an employee at a government office, told AFP news agency.

“On my way I passed by the sit-in area and remembered that all those voices who used to chant revolutionary slogans have now disappeared.”

Following Ethiopian mediation efforts, Washington’s newly appointed special envoy to Sudan, Donald Booth, and the assistant secretary of state for Africa, Tibor Nagy, met military council chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Thursday.

Burhan told the envoys that Sudan and its people had a positive view of US efforts to reach a political settlement, according to a statement released by the military council.

Washington said Booth had been named to help craft a “peaceful solution” to the crisis that has rocked the northeast African country.

The Alliance for Freedom and Change umbrella protest movement said its leaders had briefed the two US officials on Wednesday on the need for a transparent investigation into the June 3 killings.

They also called for the withdrawal of “militias” from the streets in Khartoum and other towns, the lifting of an internet blockade and the establishment of a civilian administration, it said in a statement.

Worsening economic crisis

The African Union, which suspended Sudan following the crackdown, said global efforts were being made to resolve the crisis.

The US diplomats were also expected to meet with top envoys from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt in Khartoum.

Experts say the three key regional powers back the generals.

Days after Bashir’s overthrow on April 11, Saudi Arabia and the UAE offered a $3bn aid package to Khartoum, including a $500m cash injection into the central bank to help support the Sudanese pound, which has plunged against the dollar.

The country’s worsening economic crisis was one initial trigger for protests against Bashir’s three-decade rule.

On Thursday, prosecutors charged him with corruption and “possessing foreign funds, acquiring suspect and illegal wealth” and putting in place a state of emergency, state media reported.

Last month, Sudan’s public prosecutor ordered the questioning of Bashir, who is being held in Khartoum’s Kober prison, over money-laundering and “financing terrorism”.

Talks between the protest leaders and generals collapsed in mid-May over the question of who should lead a new governing body – a civilian or a soldier.

Relations worsened following the crackdown, with protest leaders now insisting any agreement reached with the military rulers must be backed by “regional and international” guarantees.

Taylor Swift Commands Haters And Homophobes To ‘Calm Down’ On Radiant New Song

Taylor Swift‘s brand new single is here, and it’s nothing to keep calm about.

As promised during her revealing Instagram Live session on Thursday (June 13) — where she also announced her seventh album, Lover — “You Need to Calm Down” arrived at the stroke of midnight.

It’s another buoyant offering from the pop star, who continues radiating joy by putting haters and homophobes in their place: “You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace / And control your urges to scream about the people you hate / ‘Cause shade never made anybody less gay.” We stan a new Pride Month anthem!

Did you catch how Swift spelled “glad” with two A’s in the accompanying lyric video? Yep, that’d be a reference to the LGBTQ organization GLAAD, which recently received a generous donation from the pop star and noted ally herself.

The track’s cover art shows Swift’s back covered with a (presumably fake) tattoo that echoes the opening scene of her “ME!” video: a kaleidoscope of butterflies emerging from a slithering snake, which was the dominant symbol of her brooding reputation era.

“You Need to Calm Down” is the second taste of Lover, following the Brendon Urie-featuring lead single, “ME!”. The reputation follow-up arrives on August 23 and marks a decidedly lighter and brighter direction for Swift, who appears amid pastel-colored clouds on the dreamy cover art.

Swift further revealed on Instagram that the 18-track project is “very romantic.” She explained, “And not just simply thematically, like it’s all love songs or something. Because I think that the idea of something being romantic, it doesn’t have to be a happy song. I think you can find romance in loneliness or sadness or going through a conflict or dealing with things in your life. It just kind of looks at those things with a very romantic gaze.”

The “You Need to Calm Down” video, Swift spilled, will premiere on Monday (June 17) on Good Morning America. Until then, read up on more album details here, and get those countdowns going!

Kawhi Leonard, Raptors Top Warriors for 1st NBA Title After Klay Thompson Injury

The Toronto Raptors took the court in 1995 and have played 24 seasons of NBA basketball since.

They can call themselves champions for the first time.

Toronto defeated the Golden State Warriors 114-110 in Thursday’s Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals to win the series on the road at Oracle Arena. The Eastern Conference representative didn’t lose a single game away from home against the mighty Warriors, preventing the modern-day dynasty from winning three straight titles and four in five years.

Raptors win their first NBA title in franchise history! https://t.co/NKcECe3Hvc

While Toronto is the champion, Golden State’s health remains an overarching storyline as this series goes down in the history books.

Already without Kevin Durant, the Warriors lost Klay Thompson to a knee injury in the third quarter after he scored 30 points as a primary offensive threat. That left Stephen Curry (21 points and seven assists), Andre Iguodala (22 points) and Draymond Green (11 points, 19 rebounds and 13 assists) to do the heavy lifting.

Even still, Golden State had an opportunity to win in the final 10 seconds after Danny Green threw the ball away. However, Curry missed a three-pointer that could have forced a Game 7.

NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, Pascal Siakam, Serge Ibaka and Fred VanVleet all scored at least 15 points, and the visitors needed every last one.

Already a Toronto Legend, No Reason for Kawhi to Leave Raptors

Toronto’s acquisition of Leonard will go down as one of the greatest trades in NBA history whether he stays or not, but he has plenty of reasons to continue building his legend in a Raptors jersey.

The new champions took a tremendous risk sending Jakob Poeltl and DeMar DeRozan—already a franchise icon who helped make the team an annual contender in the Eastern Conference—to the San Antonio Spurs for Danny Green and Leonard with no guarantee the latter would stay for more than a season before hitting free agency. What’s more, Leonard was coming off an injury that kept him out of all but nine games in his final season with the Spurs.

He now has the chance to become the prized free agent of the summer should he decline his player option, and Raptors fans would surely forgive him for moving on after he led them to their first title.

However, he no longer has to worry about whether he can become a household name in Toronto. He just put on a two-month showcase on national television during one of the greatest single playoff performances in league history and is known across the sports world.

He hit the series-winning buzzer-beater in Game 7 of the second round against the Philadelphia 76ers, sinking a shot that will go down in history. He out-dueled potential league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in the Eastern Conference Finals. And he took down the mighty Warriors in the NBA Finals without losing a single game in the daunting Oracle Arena.

With Durant out with a ruptured Achilles and LeBron James turning 35 years old in December, Leonard has a chance to become the preeminent player in the league next season while defending a crown in Toronto.

Should he stay, he would also have plenty of pieces around him, as Lowry posted a narrative-shifting 26 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in Thursday’s contest, which began with him taking over in the first quarter.

The five-time All-Star drilled his first three triples and sliced through the defense before finding Siakam for an alley-oop to set the tone, which created space for others to operate as the game continued. It was the type of performance that indicated he will be more than comfortable running the offense next season even if Leonard needs to rest periodically before the playoffs.

Elsewhere, Siakam, VanVleet and OG Anunoby provide the Raptors with a young core to build around and talented pieces who can take advantage of the doubles Leonard draws on a consistent basis. Siakam and VanVleet each took over games throughout these playoffs and could take more of the responsibility away from No. 2 in 2019-20.

Anunoby didn’t play in the postseason because of injury, but he already battled James in last year’s playoffs and has a promising future as someone who can model his game after Leonard’s. The 2017 first-round pick is a two-way forward who often defends the opponent’s best player while providing offense on the other end.

Veteran leaders are also present on the Raptors roster in Lowry, Ibaka, Green and Marc Gasol (should he pick up his own player option or re-sign in free agency). Plus, Toronto has a head coach in Nick Nurse who just won a championship in his first year at the helm.

While there is no guarantee the entire group will stay together, Leonard should have plenty to like north of the border.

He will forever be a Toronto legend after delivering the franchise its first championship. Now he has the chance to further cement his status as the best Raptor ever and make Toronto his new home.

Saudi air defence intercepts five Houthi drones: SPA

Saudi Arabia says its air defence forces intercepted five drones launched by Yemen’s Houthis at Abha airport and the city of Khamis Mushait in the latest escalation of conflict in the region.

The air traffic and air space at Abha airport were operating normally, a Saudi-led coalition spokesman said in a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency said early on Friday.

At least 26 people were injured after Houthis fired missile at Abha airport on Wednesday, drawing sharp response from Riyadh which vowed to take “stern action”.

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement earlier said that it carried out drone attacks on Abha Airport days after it targeted the airport in southwest Saudi Arabia with missile, the group’s Al-Masirah TV reported.

The rebels, who have been fighting the Saudi-led coalition since March 2015, have carried out at least four attacks on Saudi Arabia this week as it has stepped up attacks on the kingdom amid tensions between Shia power Iran and the US, Saudi Arabia’s main ally.

On Monday, Saudi air defence forces intercepted two drones targeting Khamis Mushait in the kingdom’s south.

It caused no damage or casualties, the Saudi-United Arab Emirate (UAE) coalition, which intervened in Yemen in support of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was ousted from power by the Houthis in late 2014.

Last month, the Saudi air force shot down a bomb-laden drone deployed by Houthi rebels that targeted Jizan airport, close to the southern border with Yemen.

The airport is used by thousands of civilians every day, but the coalition reported no casualties and warned the rebels of a strong response.

Two oil pumping stations in Saudi Arabia were targeted by Houthi drones in May causing minor supply disruptions highlighting an apparent significant leap in the drone capabilities of the Houthis.

The rebels say they had the right to defend themselves in the face of five years of Saudi-UAE bombing and an air and sea blockade.

The conflict in Yemen has killed tens of thousands of people, many of them civilians, aid agencies say.

It has triggered what the UN describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 24.1 million – more than two-thirds of the population – in need of aid.

The things I am watching tonight:

    1. Can Steph and Klay get to 60 points?
    2. Will the good or bad version of DeMarcus show up?
    3. Can anyone else on GSW provide some scoring?
    4. Will the Raptors make a respectable number of threes?

GSW needs those to go their way to win.

Lover It Is! Taylor Swift Unveils The Release Date And Cover Art For Her New Album

Getty Images

Finally, we have answers! During an intimate Instagram Live session on Thursday (June 13), Taylor Swift spilled all the details surrounding her upcoming seventh album, which is titled — drumroll please — Lover.

“Another thing that you were absolutely correct about was the album title. The album is called Lover,” Swift spilled, after praising her fans’ dedication to hunting the easter eggs she planted in her “ME!” video.

As you might recall, the word “Lover” appeared prominently on that video — in fact, it was so prominent, that fans thought there was no way it would be hidden in such plain sight. Looks like Tay got the last laugh on that one.

Swift further revealed that Lover will arrive on August 23 (because 8+2+3=13, her fave number) and will comprise 18 tracks, including the Brendon Urie-assisted “ME!” Another new single called “You Need to Calm Down” will arrive tonight (yes, tonight!) at midnight, and will be followed by a music video premiering on June 17 on Good Morning America.

Speaking about the album’s title, Swift explained, “This album, in tone, it’s very romantic. And not just simply thematically, like it’s all love songs or something. Because I think that the idea of something being romantic, it doesn’t have to be a happy song. I think you can find romance in loneliness or sadness or going through a conflict or dealing with things in your life. It just kind of looks at those things with a very romantic gaze.”

Among Swift’s other revelations: there will be four deluxe editions of the album, and she’s collaborated with designer Stella McCartney for a collection inspired by the new music. Got all that? Good.

Check out Lover‘s dreamy, pastel-colored artwork above, and start those countdowns — August 23 will be here before you know it, and you do NOT need to calm down about it.

Suspected New Zealand mosque shooter pleads not guilty

This is the first time a terrorism charge has been brought in New Zealand [Reuters]
This is the first time a terrorism charge has been brought in New Zealand [Reuters]

The Australian man accused of killing 51 worshippers at two mosques in New Zealand in March pleaded not guilty to multiple murder and terrorism charges on Friday.

In an attack broadcast live on Facebook, the lone gunman armed with semi-automatic weapons targeted Muslims attending Friday prayers in Christchurch on March 15, in New Zealand’s worst peacetime mass shooting.

Appearing in Christchurch High Court via audio-visual link from a maximum-security prison in Auckland, Brenton Tarrant sat silently as lawyer Shane Tait said his client pleaded “not guilty to all charges”.

This is the first time a terrorism charge has been brought in New Zealand.

The self-proclaimed white supremacist has been charged with 51 counts of murder, 40 of attempted murder and engaging in a terrorist act over the March 15 atrocity in the South Island city.

High Court Justice Cameron Mander said the trial will begin on May 4 next year.

Judge Mander said that courts usually endeavoured to bring cases to trial within a year of the event, but that “the scale and complexity of this case makes this challenging.”

Tarrant has been remanded in custody until August 16 when a case review hearing is scheduled.

The 28-year-old stood facing the camera from prison, mostly with an impassive expression but smirking at times as his lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Around 80 members of Christchurch’s Muslim community sat in the back of the court, solemn and quiet throughout the appearance. There were some quiet gasps when the not guilty plea was entered by Tarrant’s lawyer.

At the last hearing on April 5, the court had ordered Tarrant to undergo mental assessment first to determine whether he was fit to stand trial.

The Judge said on Friday that there were no issues arising from mental health assessments and the defendant is fit to stand trial.

‘Let me make something 100% clear’: FEC chair lays down the law on foreign help

Ellen Weintraub

The head of the Federal Election Commission released a statement on Thursday evening reiterating, emphatically, that foreign assistance is illegal in U.S. elections.

“Let me make something 100% clear to the American public and anyone running for public office: It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election,“ wrote Ellen Weintraub, commissioner of the FEC. “This is not a novel concept.“

Story Continued Below

She also sent the statement via Twitter with the introductory line: “I would not have thought that I needed to say this.“

Weintraub‘s statement comes after President Donald Trump told ABC News that he would probably hear out opposition information offered by a foreign national if given the chance in 2020. He also said he might not tell the FBI about it, even though bureau Director Christopher Wray said such assistance would need to be reported.

Trump‘s comments garnered fierce backlash from Republicans, Democrats and former law enforcement officials, who disputed the president’s assertion that accepting opposition research from foreign sources is a common practice among members of Congress. Trump made the comments while responding to attention over his son Donald Trump Jr., who met in Trump Tower with Russian nationals offering dirt on then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the lead-up to the 2016 election.

Trump told ABC News‘ George Stephanopoulos that hearing out foreign election information was not election interference, but rather “oppo research.“

Weintraub was clear in rebutting that characterization.

“Anyone who solicits or accepts foreign assistance risks being on the wrong end of a federal investigation,” she said in her statement. “Any political campaign that receives an offer of a prohibited donation from a foreign source should report that offer to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Kyrie Irving Rumors: Star ‘Prepared to Sign’ with Nets After Celtics Opt-Out

Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets have been connected numerous times in recent weeks, but Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald provided the most impactful news when he reported Thursday that the floor general “is prepared to sign with the [Nets] when he becomes a free agent next month.”

“According to a source with ties to Roc Nation, the organization expected to become Irving’s new representative, the All-Star point guard is prepared to sign with the Brooklyn Nets when he becomes a free agent next month,” Bulpett wrote. “A separate league source told the Herald that his team (not the Celtics) has received the same information and is operating under the belief that Irving wants to join the Nets.”

The 27-year-old averaged 23.8 points, 6.9 assists and 5.0 rebounds last season. The 2016 NBA champion and six-time All-Star was the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft out of Duke.

The 42-40 Nets surprised many en route to their first postseason appearance since the 2014-15 season.

They have an All-Star in D’Angelo Russell, but the Nets could use a superstar like Irving to build their team around as they look to improve upon their successful 2018-19 campaign.

If Irving comes on board, the Nets would have one of the NBA’s more productive offensive backcourts.

The eight-year veteran, who has posted 22.2 points per game during his career, has made 39.0 percent of his three-pointers.

Russell is coming off a career-best season in which he averaged 21.2 points on 43.4 percent shooting in just 30.1 minutes per game. For his part, he seemingly approves of Irving headed to the Nets if his like on an Instagram post featuring a custom Irving Nets jersey is any indication:

DLo approves 👀 https://t.co/U2Qr7jtTM5

Brooklyn has room for improvement on the offensive end; per ESPN.com, the Nets finished just 19th in offensive efficiency last season.

Irving can certainly help in that regard, as his 24.37 player efficiency rating ranked third among all qualified point guards last season, per ESPN.com.

Ultimately, adding Irving is a no-brainer for Brooklyn if both sides can reach an agreement.
