Britain’s Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab resigns

Dominic Raab quit as UK’s Brexit Secretary over the proposed EU withdrawal agreement in a huge blow to British Prime Minister Theresa May.

“I regret to say that, following the Cabinet meeting yesterday on the Brexit deal, I must resign,” Raab said. May’s plan threatened the integrity of the United Kingdom, he said.

“I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we made to the country in our manifesto at the last election. This is, at its heart, a matter of public trust,” he said in his resignation letter, published on his Twitter account.

European Union leaders will meet on November 25 to endorse the divorce deal that has been stalled over lack of consensus.

May will set out the terms of the draft withdrawal agreement on Thursday to the House of Commons, which must approve the deal before the UK leaves the European Union on March 29.

The PM secured the backing of her cabinet for the draft agreement on Wednesday, after a five-hour meeting.

“The collective decision of the government was that the cabinet should agree to the draft agreement and the outlying political declaration,” May said on Wednesday.

“This is a decisive step, which allows us to move on and finalise the deal in the days ahead,” she added. “These decisions were not taken lightly, but I firmly believe they were in the national interest.”

Rajon Rondo Hand Injury Diagnosed as Fracture; Lakers PG out ‘A Couple Weeks’

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without point guard Rajon Rondo after he suffered a fractured hand in Wednesday’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers

Lakers coach Luke Walton told reporters the team expects Rondo to miss at least a couple weeks.

Rondo joined the Lakers in the offseason as part of the franchise’s makeover. The four-time All-Star remains an effective role player in his 13th season thanks to his ability to distribute the basketball.

Last season with the New Orleans Pelicans, Rondo made 63 starts, and his 46.8 shooting percentage was his best since 2012-13. He entered Wednesday averaging 9.3 points and 6.8 assists per game in Los Angeles.

The Lakers added Rondo, in part, to serve as an insurance policy at point guard. Lonzo Ball missed 30 games with various injuries as a rookie.

Of course, LeBron James’ presence on the roster this year changes the offensive dynamic because he controls the ball and dictates what happens.

Rondo’s absence won’t hurt the Lakers much because of James. Ball will likely see an increase in playing time at point guard until Rondo is able to return.

Digital dictatorship in Vietnam seeks to silence dissidents

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – Pham Doan Trang strums softly on an acoustic guitar. She’s performing the Vietnamese folk song Water Ferns Drift Clouds Float Far. It’s a song permitted by Vietnam’s government. The authorities keep a close eye on any public performance.

Trang, 39, now suffers when she plays the song. Not because of its moving lyrics or melody but because she can barely strum the chords. Last August, Trang was arrested along with 50 others at a concert in a Ho Chi Minh City teashop.

“They raided the concert. They said the singer was singing unpermitted songs,” Trang said.

“They have a law that stipulates that every songwriter must register to perform and disseminate a song. That means if you compose a song and perform it somewhere without asking for permission, you are doing something illegal.”

Witnesses watched as police physically assaulted Trang who was seated in the audience. While in police custody, she sustained injuries to both hands. Many weeks later, bruises still cover her knuckles.

She was never charged with a crime but had her passport, phone and laptop confiscated.

This is not the first time Trang has been arrested or assaulted. In 2015, she was participating at a protest against the felling of trees in the capital, Hanoi. Police descended on protesters and both of her knees were broken.

This has left her with a debilitating limp.

Vietnam marks 50th anniversary of Tet Offensive

“Since I became an activist. I [have been] attacked, physically attacked, many times by the police. Now I am disabled,” Trang said, looking down at her hands, knees and mobility aid by her side.

“Once you learn about freedom, it’s very hard for you to stop.”

Communist mindset

Trang is one of Vietnam’s most prolific dissident writers. Her most recent book Politics for the Masses got her briefly detained earlier this year. It’s a political primer for pro-democracy activists.

“Many people say this book can give me a prison sentence of 20 years. This book may give me a death sentence. It’s a logical deduction,” Trang said. “I don’t know what is their strategy or plan. I mean [a] status on Facebook may attract several likes, not hundreds or thousands, but people are still given 20 years [in prison]. I can’t understand the mindset of communists.”

Vietnamese environmentalist, Le Dinh Luong, had his 20-year prison sentence upheld last month – one of the longest handed down to an activist. He was convicted of “attempting to overthrow the state”.

Vietnamese blogger Mother Mushroom – Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh – was released and sent into exile in the United States after serving two years of a 10-year prison sentence. She was convicted in 2016 of writing “anti-state propaganda”.

Amnesty International says there are at least 97 prisoners of conscience in Vietnam. Human Rights Watch puts the total at more than 130, according to its Asia deputy director, Phil Robertson.

This year alone 55 Vietnamese activists, bloggers and Facebook users have been jailed, according to an AFP news agency investigation.

Many Vietnamese believe the government uses political prisoners such as Mother Mushroom as bargaining chips to gain concessions from the US and, most recently, to improve trade relations with the European Union.

Human rights lawyer Le Cong Dinh served five years in prison and was released in 2014 because of pressure placed on Hanoi.

“After that the US agreed not to protest against Vietnam’s involvement in the UN Human Rights Council. That’s why I got out of jail. They tried to force me out of the country at the time but I rejected and decided to stay and keep fighting,” he said.

Facebook overthrow?

From Facebook down to the Streets is a 2016 samizdat book by Pham Doan Trang. It raised the attention of Vietnamese authorities as it documented the country’s nascent environmental movement.

Hanoi plan to ban motorbikes by 2030 to combat congestion

Trang is extremely careful with her online activity. She knows any comment she posts to Facebook could be used to prosecute her and send her to prison like many of her peers.

Vietnam’s government has stated it employs a 10,000-strong cyber “task force” to monitor activists.

“What are they thinking? Do they actually think that people writing on Facebook can overthrow the administration?” Trang asked.

Since last June nationwide protests against Vietnam’s proposed Special Economic Zones and cybersecurity law have caught Hanoi off guard. Hundreds were arrested.

“Vietnamese Facebook users are close to 60 million,” said Vi Tran, co-director of Legal Initiatives for Vietnam. “Many large protests [against the government] around the country have started on Facebook.”

Inside Vietnam, historically information flowed from the top down via state-run media, but with the rise of blogging and social media platforms now the news flows horizontally with bloggers and journalists writing and sharing news independently.

Reporters Without Borders’ 2018 World Press Freedom Index ranks Vietnam 175 out of 180 countries – one point ahead of China. Freedom House says Vietnam is not free.

But unlike in China, access to Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter in Vietnam isn’t blocked. Under its new cybersecurity law, the Vietnamese government requested these US tech companies to open offices inside the country to store its data locally.

A song for freedom

The law will come into effect January 1, 2019. Tech giants Facebook and Googlehave been given one year from this date to comply. Human Rights Watch has called it disastrous for freedom of expression in Vietnam.

Vietnam’s compulsory drug rehab centres

“Observers are saying that the new cybersecurity law will give the government a tool to arrest more activists,” Le Cong Dinh added.

Vietnamese civil society groups are concerned Facebook has begun to block or shut down accounts requested by the authorities. This move could silence many dissidents using the platform to share independent news and opinions.

“I just feel worried for other people. I’m so familiar with violent suppression and political repression,” Trang said. “But for other people it’s a real danger because now they can be arrested and given lengthy prison terms for a post.”

Trang is extremely worried about the deteriorating human rights situation in Vietnam. But she’s optimistic about the peaceful, non-violent, methods used by her compatriots to express their dissatisfaction with the regime in Hanoi.

In the meantime, she’ll continue her work offline.

“My hands are hurt but I can still type. I’m working on a new book. It’s a legal handbook for people with imprisoned family members,” Trang said. “I may even write a song.”

Stephen Colbert’s parody of Trump’s ‘Policy Time’ channels ‘Adventure Time’

While the much-loved Adventure Time might be long gone, Stephen Colbert has a worthy alternative: Policy Time.

The Late Show’s spoof comes following reports that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has instituted “policy time” in a bid to get Trump to focus on policy matters.

It’s on top of the president’s much-talked about “executive time,” in which he spends time tweeting and watching TV, which is referenced in the parody’s theme song. Oh, and Kelly is the dog for some reason.

LeBron James Passes Wilt Chamberlain for 5th on NBA All-Time Scoring List

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - OCTOBER 29: LeBron James #23 of the Los Angeles Lakers is seen at the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 29, 2018 at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James moved into fifth place on the NBA‘s all-time scoring list, climbing past Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain.

Entering Wednesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, James needed 39 points to claim the fifth spot from Chamberlain. He achieved the feat with a free throw in the fourth quarter.

The next step up the scoring chart holds a significant symbolic importance. Assuming he reaches 32,293 career points, James will overtake Michael Jordan for fourth place.

NBA All-Time Scoring List Top Five

1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387)

2. Karl Malone (36,928)

3. Kobe Bryant (33,643)

4. Michael Jordan (32,292)

5. LeBron James (31,420)

Even at 33, James continues to play at a high level. He entered Wednesday averaging 26.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.1 assists in his first season with the Lakers. Just as impressive, James has welcomed the uptempo style head coach Luke Walton wanted to implement. Los Angeles ranks third in pace, according to NBA.com.

Chamberlain is the second legendary name James leapfrogged this season. Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki was in sixth place on the scoring list before LeBron’s 35-point effort in a 110-106 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 27.

Nowitzki commented on how James may ultimately be able to wrest the top spot from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

If he stays healthy, the way he’s looking and moving, he has a chance at Kareem,” Nowitzki said, per ESPN.com’s Tim MacMahon. “His numbers have been unbelievable. He doesn’t seem to slow down. The stuff he was doing last year in year 15 was incredible. If he keeps this up, he can pass Kareem.”

Long before he can set his sights on Abdul-Jabbar, James will first have to topple the greatest player in NBA history. A little over 800 points separate him from Jordan, so it’ll be a little while before James is within striking distance.

Assuming he can maintain a 25-point-per-game pace, James should get there sometime inside the next 40 games, giving him ample time to catch Jordan this season.

Mike Pence: No place for ’empire and aggression’ in Indo-Pacific

US Vice President Mike Pence told leaders of Southeast Asian nations on Thursday there is no place for “empire and aggression” in the Indo-Pacific region, a comment seen as a reference to China’s rise.

Pence did not mention China in his remarks at the opening of a summit of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Singapore, but he stressed all countries in the region should be allowed to prosper.

“Like you we seek an Indo-Pacific in which all nations, large and small, can prosper and thrive – secure in our sovereignty, confident in our values, and growing stronger together,” he said. “We all agree that empire and aggression have no place in the Indo-Pacific.”

‘Free, fair and reciprocal’

Pence said Washington had taken action to promote this vision, including steps to spur private investment in infrastructure and the pursuit of trade that is “free, fair, and reciprocal”.

The vice president also highlighted the United States’ “pressure campaign” on North Korea, its “commitment to uphold the freedom of the seas and skies”, and determination to ensure that Southeast Asian nations are secure in their sovereign borders, on land, at sea, and in the digital world.

Singapore summit: US-China trade war dominates talks

Pence’s comments follow a major speech in October in which he flagged a tougher approach by Washington towards Beijing, accusing China of “malign” efforts to undermine US President Donald Trump and reckless military actions in the South China Sea.

The United States has conducted a series of “freedom of navigation” exercises in the disputed South China Sea, angering Beijing, which claims the sea as its own.

Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan also claim parts of the maritime region, which is thought to be rich in natural resources and is a major global shipping route.

China rising

Pence’s comments came as a US report on Wednesday said China’s armed forces could match the United States’ by 2050.

Beijing has made significant advancements in hypersonic weapons, cyber abilities, and space defence, said the report. China increased its military budget this year to $175bn, an 8.1 percent increase compared to 2017.

Congress tasked the National Defence Strategy Commission to look at Trump’s sweeping National Defence Strategy (NDS), which highlighted a new era of “Great Power competition” with Moscow and Beijing.

The panel found just as the US military faced budget cuts and diminishing military advantages, nations such as China and Russia are pursuing build-ups aimed “at neutralising US strengths”.

“America’s military superiority – the hard-power backbone of its global influence and national security – has eroded to a dangerous degree,” the commission’s report said.

The US’ focus on counter-insurgency operations has resulted in it slipping in other warfighting areas such as missile defence, cyber and space operations, and anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare.

“The US military could suffer unacceptably high casualties and loss of major capital assets in its next conflict,” the commission found.

“It might struggle to win, or perhaps lose, a war against China or Russia. The United States is particularly at risk of being overwhelmed should its military be forced to fight on two or more fronts simultaneously.”

Though the Pentagon this year has a budget of more than US$700bn – far more than Russia and China combined – the commission said the sum is still “clearly insufficient” to meet the goals laid out in the NDS.

‘Toxic’ is a sadly perfect word of the year for 2018

Toxic environment: Air pollution in New Delhi hit hazardous levels on Nov. 8.

2018 has been one toxic year.

You know it, we know it, and the Oxford Dictionary knows it. The prestigious publisher has chosen their Word of the Year, and this time, it’s “toxic.”

SEE ALSO: How a ridiculous game uses jousting dicks to interrogate toxic masculinity

“The Oxford Word of the Year is a word or expression that is judged to reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the passing year, and have lasting potential as a term of cultural significance,” reads on online statement from the dictionary.

“In 2018, toxic added many strings to its poisoned bow becoming an intoxicating descriptor for the year’s most talked about topics.”

Dictionaries like the Oxford, Merriam-Webster, Macquarie and Dictionary.com pick their words of the year based on the frequency of online lookups — last year, Oxford’s was “youthquake.”

What made the shortlist for 2018? Gaslighting, incel, techlash, gammon, cakeism, overtourism, orbiting and of course, Big Dick Energy.

According to data collated by the dictionary, the word “toxic” saw a 45 percent rise in the number of times it’s been looked up on the Oxford Dictionary website in 2018.

But it’s not just looked up alone. Over the last year these ten habitually associated words, or collocates, were the most looked up:

  1. Chemical

  2. Masculinity

  3. Substance

  4. Gas

  5. Environment

  6. Relationship

  7. Culture

  8. Waste

  9. Algae

  10. Air

Toxic masculinity stands out, right? It’s the second most associated word people have looked up in the dictionary online. It makes sense considering the last 12 months, with the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements championing the abolition of toxic masculinity, and toxic relationships (number six on the list).

Toxic chemical, however, is the most looked up. Oxford suggests this could be due to news stories of the last 12 months involving these, like the nerve agent poisoning of a former Russian intelligence officer and his daughter, and global concern over the world’s toxic chemical stockpiles.

Toxic environment could mean multiple things, from recent shifts in attitude toward harassment in the workplace to recent reports of extreme air pollution in India. The same goes for toxic culture, which could relate to workplace unrest akin to Google’s mass walkouts.

So, you’ve made it this far, you must want to know where the word “toxic” comes from?

“The adjective toxic is defined as ‘poisonous’ and first appeared in English in the mid-seventeenth century from the medieval Latin toxicus, meaning ‘poisoned’ or ‘imbued with poison’,” reads the Oxford Dictionary’s definition.

“The medieval Latin term was in turn borrowed from the Latin toxicum, meaning ‘poison’, which has its origins in the Greek toxikon pharmakon – lethal poison used by the ancient Greeks for smearing on the points of their arrows.”

Oh cool, you can see how much time you waste on Instagram now

Instagram’s “Your Activity” will help you keep tabs on your usage.

Last year, Instagram was rated as the most damaging social network for one’s mental wellbeing.

It’s unsurprising all those vanity and #influencer posts weren’t really doing us any favours, and now the app is rolling out a way to track your usage, and to limit it if need be.

SEE ALSO: The preferred methods of extreme Instagram lurkers

Called Your Activity, the dashboard is accessible in the top right menu, and you can see how much time you’ve spent on the app on average, as well how much you’re using it each day.

There’s also options to restrict your usage, in the vein of Apple’s Screen Time and Google’s Digital Wellbeing, where you can set a daily time limit and have Instagram notify you if you’ve spent too much time in the app.

Once your time is up, a dialog box will appear telling you that you’ve hit your limit, with the option to hit OK or edit your reminder so you can continue zombie scrolling.

The feature was first spotted in June, and a month later it was confirmed that the dashboard would be coming to Facebook and Instagram.

Instagram's reminder of your mindless scrolling.

Instagram’s reminder of your mindless scrolling.

Image: instagram

For the moment, it appears Instagram’s Your Activity doesn’t offer the granularity of Apple’s Screen Time.

On Screen Time, you can look at what times of the day you’re using the app, and how long for. Plus, the feature can send you a five minute warning prior to hitting your daily limit, and tells you how many notifications you’ve received that day.

With that said, it’s unclear if such insights and notifications have a profound effect on curbing one’s social media usage. For that, you might just need to rely on old-fashioned willpower.

Jimmy Butler: Brett Brown ‘Special’; with HC on Course ‘It’s Going to Be Easy’

Although the Philadelphia 76ers lost in Jimmy Butler‘s debut with the team Wednesday, he is apparently happy to play under head coach Brett Brown.

“He’s special; he makes sure everyone is out there comfortable,” the guard said of Brown after the game, per Serena Winters of NBC Sports Philly. “… When the head of this thing is steering us in the right direction, it’s going to be easy.”

Butler scored 14 points in 33 minutes during the 111-106 loss to the Orlando Magic.

The 29-year-old can be a difference-maker with his new team as one of the top two-way players in the NBA. He has earned an All-Star appearance in each of the last four years and joins a team that was considered one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference before his arrival.

However, he also comes with plenty of question marks after requesting a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves in September.

“He has to be on his best behavior [in Philly], and he knows it,” a league executive told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. “If he screws up that team, that’ll be three straight teams. Someone will sign him in free agency, but he won’t get all that he’s asking for.”

Butler has a player option for 2019-20 but could decline it and hit free agency this offseason.

Fortunately, he appears to be getting along with his new coach and teammates through the first few days with the squad.

Avenatti in police custody following domestic dispute

Michael Avenatti

Stormy Daniels attorney Michael Avenatti was arrested Wednesday in Los Angeles and booked on a felony domestic violence charge, Los Angeles police confirmed.

Avenatti, an anti-Trump fixture on the cable news circuit who is exploring a 2020 run for president, was arrested at 2:05 p.m. on the 10000 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, police said.

Story Continued Below

The attorney held a brief news conference late Wednesday after he was released from jail.

“I have never struck a woman. I never will strike a woman. I’ve been an advocate for women’s rights my entire career and I’m going to continue to be an advocate,” Avenatti told reporters. “I’m not going to be intimidated from stopping what I am doing.”

Avenatti welcomed an investigation, saying he expected to be “fully exonerated.”

Earlier, Tony Im, a public information officer for the Los Angeles Police Department, said Avenatti was booked on a charge of felony domestic violence with injuries. Avenatti’s bail was set at $50,000. Police wouldn’t provide more details of the incident.

The explosive development comes as Avenatti has spent months laying a foundation for a White House bid, and as the brash, in-your-face attorney threatened or brought legal action against the Trump administration on multiple fronts.

Before his release from jail, Avenatti released a statement through his law office denying all abuse allegations.

“I wish to thank the hard working men and woman of the LAPD for their professionalism they were only doing their jobs in light of the completely bogus allegations against me,” he said. “I have never been physically abusive in my life nor was I last night. Any accusations to the contrary are fabricated and meant to do harm to my reputation. I look forward to being fully exonerated.”

The Los Angeles Times reported the allegations were made by a woman who had “visible injuries.”

With Avenatti still in police custody, both his ex-wife and his estranged wife released separate statements through Avenatti’s law firm.

“My client states that there has never been domestic violence in her relationship with Michael and that she has never known Michael to be physically violent toward anyone,” an attorney for Lisa Storie-Avenatti said in a statement. “My client requests that the media respect her privacy and that of the parties’ young son.”

“I’ve known Michael for the last 26 years, we met when he was 21 years old and we were married for 13 years,” said Christine Avenatti-Carlin in a statement. “Michael has always been a loving, kind father to our two daughters and husband. He has never been abusive to me or anyone else. He is a very good man.”

Avenatti, who is in the midst of a contested divorce from Lisa Storie-Avenatti, has campaigned across 20 states since July, speaking to large crowds and selling out fundraising dinners, including in Iowa. Avenatti has attempted to position himself as the Democrats’ answer to Donald Trump, calling on the Democratic field to “hit harder” against the president.

On Saturday, Avenatti revealed he represented a man who was seeking to bring charges against Fox News host Tucker Carlson after an incident in a Virginia restaurant.

Since Avenatti began ramping up his 2020 ambitions, he’s faced various controversies, from getting into verbal scrums with Donald Trump Jr. over Twitter to facing a backlash over comments he made, according to Time, that the person to run against Trump “better be a white male.” Avenatti said he was taken out of context, saying: “It’s a f—— outrage.” Last month, the Senate Judiciary Committee referred Avenatti and his client Julie Swetnick to the Justice Department for an investigation into false statements after she leveled sexual misconduct allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, then a Supreme Court nominee.

Avenatti also faced his share of troubles in civil court. As part of their divorce case, his second wife sought $215,643 a month in family support. And in October, a Los Angeles judge issued an order saying Avenatti must pay $4.85 million to a former law colleague who claimed he was owed millions of dollars in profit.

At the time, Avenatti told POLITICO there was nothing in his past that would rule out a potential run for president. He even launched a political PAC and released his first ad.

“There’s all kinds of things I would not have done. Do I think any of them are disqualifying? No. Do I think any of them are disqualifying in the age of Donald Trump? Absolutely not,” he said. “But look, I’m a real guy. I’m a genuine guy. But if I decide to do it and some of these things come out, I’m going to own them.”
