As wildfires continue to rage across California, a set of before and after photos brings into focus the utter devastation wrought by the blazes, particularly in the northern California town of Paradise which has essentially been incinerated by the fires.

As of Thursday morning, the Camp Fire has burned over 140,000 acres and is still raging at only 40 percent contained after sparking to life a week ago.

Investigators are still searching for a cause of the fire.

Once the fire exploded, it was fueled by already unusually parched timber and grasses and driven quickly, burning 70,000 acres in is first 24 hours, by excessive winds. The fire is California’s deadliest ever with 59 reported deaths as of Thursday morning and more than 100 people still reported missing.

Meanwhile, in Southern California, the Woolsey Fire was 57 percent contained as of Thursday morning as it had burned just shy of 100,000 acres. The other notable recent blaze, the Hill Fire, was 97 percent contained, some rare good news in a horrible week for the state.

Instagram adds new shopping features to make it even easier to buy stuff

Instagram really, really wants you to buy stuff in its app.

The company announced three new features that make it easier to buy and sell products on the platform.

Among the updates:

  • A new collections feature that lets you privately save links to products you might want to buy in a dedicated “shopping” section.

  • Shoppable product tags for video posts. This lets companies link out to specific products that appear in their videos. A similar feature for image posts was added in September.

  • A redesigned “shop” section for business profiles that makes it easier to buy specific items.

These changes not only come in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season, but at a time when e-commerce is becoming more and more strategically important to the company.

Instagram hasn’t said much publicly about its ambitions in the space, but it’s become increasingly clear that the company sees shopping as a massive — and relatively untapped — opportunity. Currently, there are more than 25 million businesses that have Instagram profiles, and the photo-sharing app has become one of the most important platforms for smaller and direct-to-consumer brands. But the company hasn’t done much to monetize the shopping that happens in its app. Companies aren’t charged for using shopping tools organically, though they can pay for shoppable ads.

But if Instagram did want to start making money off all these transactions, it first needs to get more people and companies to buy and sell in its app, a hugely important step in the right direction.

The app also added shoppable tags to Stories and dedicated shopping channels for Explore in September. The company is also rumored to be working on a dedicated shopping app.

Instagram isn’t alone in this, either. Snapchat is also aggressively pursuing shopping, with shoppable ads in Stories and a partnership with Amazon. In Snap’s case, though, the company may have much more groundwork to lay as Snapchat doesn’t have the same business presence ad Instagram does.

For both companies, though, the strategy is clear: it wants users to think of their apps as shopping destinations.

Facebook starts rolling out ‘Unsend’ feature in Messenger

Some messages are better left unsent.

Ever wish you could retract something you said?

Soon you’ll be able to do something of the sort on Facebook’s Messenger. The social network has started a rollout of an “Unsend” feature for Messenger, letting users delete messages within 10 minutes of sending.

SEE ALSO: Frontline’s Facebook documentary sheds new light on company’s mistakes

The news of the feature existing isn’t new — Facebook confirmed it earlier this month. But now, TechCrunch has found out that it’s actually rolling out in some markets, namely  Poland, Bolivia, Colombia and Lithuania, on both iOS and Android. Other markets are coming soon, though timing is uncertain due to an App Store policy that doesn’t let app updates around the holidays (typically from Dec 23-27).

The feature is simple to use, and will appear as an additional option at the bottom of the screen when you long press a message you’ve sent in Messenger. Now, the options include “copy,” “forward” and “delete;” the new option will be known as “remove.” Tap it, and you’ll be able to remove the message either only for you, or for all recipients.

TechCrunch also has some new details on how the feature might be upgraded in the future. For example, Facebook is considering the possibility of adding an expiration date in advance — either for a single message or an entire message thread.

The “Unsend” feature has an interesting history. TechCrunch reported in May — and Facebook later confirmed — that Facebook has deleted years-old messages sent by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, without giving any sort of warning to recipients. Now, finally, all users will be getting this option — albeit usable only within a much shorter timeframe.

Report: DJ Durkin Assisted Maryland Coaches During Suspension, Approved by AD

Former University of Maryland football coach DJ Durkin reportedly advised assistant coaches and helped create game plans during his time on administrative leave during the 2018 season.

According to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun, a task force was informed that assistants sent Durkin game film and received feedback during his absence.

Maryland’s Board of Regents reportedly knew about Durkin’s role with the team, and the now-former coach told the board that his involvement was approved by athletic director Damon Evans.

The Board of Regents cleared Durkin to return as head coach on Oct. 30, but university president Wallace Loh fired Durkin the following day amid public backlash.

Durkin was head coach of the team when offensive lineman Jordan McNair died from a heatstroke suffered during a team workout in May, and several players later told ESPN of “a coaching environment based on fear and intimidation.”

Maryland placed Durkin on administrative leave following the report, which also saw strength and conditioning coach Rick Court leave the school permanently.

Loh later announced that the University of Maryland accepted “legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes” made by the training staff that led to McNair’s death, per ESPN’s Heather Dinich.

In addition to Durkin and Court, Maryland parted ways with trainers Steve Nordwall and Wes Robinson.

While Durkin reportedly said that Evans allowed him to speak with the coaching staff during his leave, a university spokeswoman told Barker on Wednesday that Durkin “was not to perform coaching duties while on administrative leave” and that neither Evans nor Loh cleared him to do so.

Offensive coordinator Matt Canada has served as the interim head coach throughout the 2018 season.

The 5-5 Terrapins will look to make themselves bowl eligible Saturday when they host the No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes.

Cabinet members are among the most powerful people in the county. Their job is to lead their respective executive departments and advise the president.

The cabinet consists of the Vice President and 15 executive departments ranked according to their presidential line of succession. Additional members can be designated by the president and are Cabinet-ranked, but do not hold any other additional powers.

Most of Donald Trump’s appointed cabinet members are white and male.

Supreme Court Justices are the highest-ranked judges in the country. They have the power to interpret the Constitution.

Justices are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. They serve a lifetime tenure.

The longest-serving justice currently in office is Clarence Thomas, who was appointed by George HW Bush in 1991. The most recent justice to join is Brett Kavanaugh, who after a controversial confirmation process, assumed office in October 2018.

Each of the 50 US States and five territories has a governor. Governors lead their respective states and implement laws.

Governors are elected by direct popular vote, and typically serve a four-year term.

Historically, there has been very little diversity among US governors with the majority being white men.

Glen Taylor: Wolves ‘Wasted Some Time’ Trying to Prevent Jimmy Butler Trade

Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor likes the haul his team received from the Philadelphia 76ers for Jimmy Butler, but he also has some regrets about how the process played out.

According to Jace Frederick of the Pioneer Press, Taylor said Wednesday that he believes the T-Wolves “wasted some time” trying to convince Butler to stay for the entire 2018-19 season.

Taylor added that head coach Tom Thibodeau “did everything under his power” to keep Butler in the fold.

Ultimately, though, Minnesota shipped him and forward Justin Patton to the Sixers for forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric, guard Jerryd Bayless and a 2022 second-round draft pick.

Rather than getting a deal done during the offseason and removing any potential distractions from the equation, the saga spilled over into the regular season and wasn’t resolved until Monday’s trade.

With regard to the drawn-out nature of the situation, Taylor said, “It consumed too much of my time on things that were negative.”

Taylor also noted the organization “probably would’ve done some things differently” in retrospect.

Despite the fact that some mistakes were made along the way, Minnesota seemingly did well in the trade by landing two immediate impact players.

Covington is an excellent defensive player and a quality three-point shooter who is averaging 11.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game this season.

Meanwhile, Saric is a supremely talented 24-year-old who is putting up 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest.

Taylor explained the rationale behind accepting Philadelphia’s offer despite the lack of a first-round draft pick: “I thought [acquiring starting-caliber players] was better than some of the other [proposals] that might have included a pick or something like that. Of course, we love picks, but I thought that we immediately probably better bring a group together and these two guys seem to fit in.”

The trade paid immediate dividends Wednesday as Minnesota beat the New Orleans Pelicans 107-100.

Covington and Saric combined for 22 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, while Karl-Anthony Towns was the clear top dog with 25 points and 16 boards in the victory.

‘My deal, no deal or no Brexit’: UK’s May fights for survival

Prime Minister Theresa May has said her draft agreement on Britain’s departure from the European Union is the only way to avoid a no-deal Brexit as she faced political attacks from all sides, including a threat of a no-confidence vote from inside her own party.

Speaking before a hostile parliament after several ministers quit on Thursday, the leader of Britain’s Conservative party told legislators “the choice is clear”.

“We can choose to leave with no deal, we can risk no Brexit at all, or we can chose to unite and support the best deal that can be negotiated,” May told the House of Commons.

Her comments came after two cabinet ministers, including the head of Brexit negotiations, and two junior ministers quit the government in protest at the agreement over Britain’s departure from the bloc on March 29, 2019.

In his resignation letter, Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab said that May’s plan threatened the integrity of the UK.

“I regret to say that, following the cabinet meeting yesterday on the Brexit deal, I must resign,” he said on Thursday.

“I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we made to the country in our manifesto at the last election. This is, at its heart, a matter of public trust.”

Esther McVey, the secretary for work and pensions, said the draft deal “does not honour the result of the referendum” in her own resignation letter.

Meanwhile, Jacob Rees-Mogg, who leads a group of anti-EU Conservatives, submitted on a letter of no-confidence in the prime minister saying that “it would be in the interest of the party and the country if she were to stand aside”.

Is it time to write? pic.twitter.com/K2S9ZSwPKU

— Jacob Rees-Mogg (@Jacob_Rees_Mogg) November 15, 2018

At least 48 such letters from Conservative MPs are required to trigger a vote of no-confidence in the party leader, but a majority of the party’s 315 legislators would have to vote against May in order for her to be ousted.

Amid the political turmoil, the pound plunged on currency markets, falling 1.7 percent to $1.27, its second biggest drop after it fell 1.73 percent against the US dollar in September.

Preparing for no-deal

May told legislators that they will have to consider the British people’s vote to leave the EU in a June 2016 referendum when parliament is asked to vote on a final Brexit agreement, which could potentially happen in December.

The referendum saw 52 percent of voters choosing to leave the EU, while 48 percent voted to remain.

The results triggered international shock and questions as to how Brexit could be implemented – The UK and EU economies are intertwined, as is their territory.

One of the most complicated issues is the prospect of a “hard border” in Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but shares a border with the Republic of Ireland, an EU member state.

There were concerns about Brexit endangering the Good Friday Agreement, which provided a framework for the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Wednesday an agreement that avoids a hard border and endangering the Good Friday Agreement – even in the event of a no-deal Brexit – had been reached, according to The Guardian.

UK ministers back Theresa May on Brexit deal

EU leaders will meet on November 25 to endorse May’s divorce deal, although the British prime minister acknowledged that a number of obstacles remained before Brexit could be finalised.

“We have been preparing for no-deal and we continue to prepare for no-deal because I recognise that we have a further stage of negotiation with the European Council and then that deal when finalised … has to come back to this House,” she told parliament.

But politicians on all sides told May that there was no way the proposed EU withdrawal agreement could pass their approval, with arch-Brexiteers and EU loyalists alike insisting it was already sunk.

“After two years of bungled negotiations, the government has produced  a botched deal that breaches the prime minister’s own red lines and does not meet our six tests,” Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour party, told parliament..

Corbyn has said Labour will vote against any deal that does not meet its tests, which include delivering the same benefits Britain currently has as a member of the EU customs union and single market.

“The government is in chaos,” Corbyn said. “Their deal risks leaving the country in an indefinite halfway house without a real say.

“The government simply cannot put to parliament this half-baked deal that both the Brexit secretary and his predecessor have rejected.”

Best gifts for grandma: Gift ideas for your nana, abuela, yia yia, or grams

Grandmas are often portrayed as frail and ignorant things, but the grandmas we know? They’d wallop you upside the head with a purse full of Werther’s Originals just for thinking such narrow-minded thoughts about your matriarchs.

When shopping for grandmothers, folks generally tend to think about their particular intersection in life (older, woman) rather than their personality. And we are here to tell you that is just plain wrong.

The most important part about shopping for grandma is to think of the stuff she actually likes. Don’t know what that is? Well it’s high time you found out! Grandmothers can be into anything —technology, science, even powerlifting. It’s up to you to find a gift that supports those hobbies, one that’ll really make your grandmother feel seen and heard.

Keep in mind that grandmother gifts sometimes default fall into the category of “gifts that help her serve others.” Our grandmothers were born in a different time, and honestly some of those gifts are really great because grandmothers earnestly love them. Some of those service-type gifts are on this list, because they’re rad, but be sure to coordinate with others so it isn’t all she gets. And be sure you’re not heading right to those gift options because they feel compulsory.

Your grandma is a complex, powerful woman and it’s about time you got her a gift that reflected that. Here are our top picks:
