Sacramento Kings head coach Dave Joerger’s job reportedly may be in jeopardy because of a difference in philosophy between him and the front office.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, those within the front office are unhappy that Joerger is favoring playing veteran players over the team’s young prospects.
Specifically, Kings executives would reportedly like 2018 No. 2 overall pick Marvin Bagley III to be featured more prominently.
Bagley is averaging 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season, and he has yet to make a start.
Instead, Joerger has utilized 30-year-old Nemanja Bjelica as the starting power forward despite the front office reportedly believing Bagley would be a starter entering the season.
Additionally, rookie power forward Harry Giles is averaging just 10.0 minutes per game, and third-year big man Skal Labissiere has appeared in only five games and is averaging a mere 5.6 minutes per contest.
One bright spot in terms of Sacramento’s young players is second-year point guard De’Aaron Fox, who is performing near an All-Star level with 19.0 points, 7.3 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game.
Overall, the Kings are a surprisingly 8-7, which currently ties them for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with the New Orleans Pelicans.
Sacramento hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2005-06, which is the NBA’s longest current postseason drought.
Joerger is in the midst of his third season as Sacramento’s head coach after spending three seasons as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.
He reached the playoffs all three years he was at the helm in Memphis, but he owns a record of just 67-112 with the Kings.

The incoming congresswoman endorses an effort by the group Justice Democrats to make the House Democratic Caucus more liberal and diverse by taking on incumbents.
Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday threw her weight behind a new national campaign to mount primaries against incumbent Democrats deemed to be ideologically and demographically out of step with their districts.
The incoming star congresswoman from New York again put the Democratic establishment on notice that she and activist groups on the left aren’t content with a Democratic-controlled House: They are determined to move the party to the left.

“Long story short, I need you to run for office,” Ocasio-Cortez said Saturday on a video conference call hosted by Justice Democrats, as the group launched a campaign dubbed “#OurTime.” Justice Democrats supported Ocasio-Cortez’s primary campaign against powerful Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.).
“All Americans know money in politics is a huge problem, but unfortunately the way that we fix it is by demanding that our incumbents give it up or by running fierce campaigns ourselves,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “That’s really what we need to do to save this country. That’s just what it is.”
The incoming congresswoman’s chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, a co-founder of Justice Democrats, was blunter.
“We need new leaders, period,” he said on the call. “We gotta primary folks.”
The group said they want Democratic members of Congress to be representative of their diverse communities and support liberal policies like Medicare for all, abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department, implementing a “Green New Deal,” and rejecting corporate PAC donations. On the campaign trail, Ocasio-Cortez talked about forming a “corporate-free caucus” as a means to push for reform. That type of group, if it forms, could turn out to be the left’s counterpart to the Freedom Caucus, which pushed Republican leadership to the right.
As for which Democrats they will target, the grass-roots organization welcomed its members to submit nominations of candidates and potential districts to target in 2020. Justice Democrats said it will prioritize women and diversity in their recruitment. All four incoming House members who were backed by Justice Democrats are women of color: Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ocasio-Cortez.
“If you’re a strong progressive leader in your community and committed to getting money out of politics, I want you to join me in Congress. I want you to run,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter Saturday
The 29-year-old Ocasio-Cortez and Justice Democrats want her victory over Crowley to be the beginning of a movement rather than just a one-off upset. “We recruited and supported Ocasio-Cortez all the way to a historic victory and now we’re going to repeat the playbook,” Justice Democrats Executive Director Alexandra Rojas said in a statement.
Tlaib a fellow Democratic socialist who had the support of Justice Democrats in her own competitive primary for Rep. John Conyers Jr.’s old seat, threw her support behind the new campaign as well.
“Help uplift women like us at all levels of government. We still need more of you to run with us. So get your squad together. We are waiting for you,” Tlaib said in a statement.
The grass-roots group expects to focus more on safe Democratic seats — as Crowley’s was — than on the swing districts, largely centered in the suburbs, that the party won en route to the House majority. That’s a slight shift in strategy after all of the group’s candidates, such as Kara Eastman in Nebraska, came up short in Republican-held congressional districts in 2018. Replacing safe Democratic incumbents with more progressives and diverse leaders, the thinking goes, could move the Overton window of what is and is not acceptable in the Democratic Party.
“There’s lots of blue districts in this country where communities want to support a new generation of diverse working class leaders who fight tirelessly for their voters and build a movement around big solutions to our country’s biggest problems,” said Rojas.
There are parallels between this effort and the Tea Party movement during Barack Obama’s presidency, when congressmen in solid Republican seats like former Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor faced primary challenges from the right.
Still, it is unusual for freshmen Democrats to throw their support behind an organization that is threatening to wage primaries against their new colleagues. And it’s unclear whether it could trigger a backlash from incumbent lawmakers who want to take advantage of their newfound majority to get things done, rather than sweating a primary challenge.
But Ocasio-Cortez has already made clear she’s looking to break the mold. During her first week in Washington, she joined a protest in Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi’s office, supporting calls for a “Green New Deal”.
”It wasn’t a very polite move to do,” Chakrabarti said.
Ocasio-Cortez said at the sit-in that she was not there to protest Pelosi but to support the activists and their agenda.
“Should Leader Pelosi become the next speaker of the House, we need to tell her that we’ve got her back in showing and pursuing the most progressive energy agenda that this country has ever seen,” she told them. “This is about unity. This is about solidarity.”
Hodges entered the day in need of 316 yards to top McNair’s mark of 14,496 yards, and a seven-yard pass to DeMarcus Ware late in the third quarter sealed the deal for the Bulldogs gunslinger, according to ESPN News Services.
All told, Hodges stands alone as the FCS’ most accomplished passer with 14,584 yards.
In addition to the gaudy yardage total, Hodges wrapped up his career in Homewood, Alabama, with the FCS records for completions (1,310) and attempts (1,896). He also had 111 touchdowns through the air, per ESPN.
Samford finished its 2018 campaign 6-5, including 5-3 in Southern Conference play.
MIAMI — Andrew Gillum, the Florida Democratic Party’s first African-American candidate for governor, officially called it quits Saturday and congratulated Republican Ron DeSantis as the governor-elect of Florida.
Gillum’s announcement follows an automatic recount that ended Thursday and showed him gaining just one net vote in the process, making the margin against DeSantis officially 33,683 votes, or 0.41 percentage points.
Story Continued Below
Gillum, who conceded on Election Night Nov. 6 and then withdrew his concession when the race headed to an automatic recount, was hoping that lawsuits from Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in his race would turn up more votes. But it didn’t happen, and Nelson is sure to lose as well. The 2018 Florida midterm election results are scheduled to be certified Tuesday.
“We said we would fight until the last vote is counted. We are now closing out the hand recount phase in two of the statewide races,” Gillum said in a Facebook video address, referring to Nelson’s contest and the race for agriculture commissioner, where Nikki Fried appears to be the only Democrat elected statewide.
“We wanted to make sure that every single vote including those that were overvotes, undervotes — as long as it was a legally cast vote — we wanted those votes to be counted,” Gillum said, standing next to his wife and adding that they “wanted to take a moment to congratulate Mr. DeSantis on becoming the next governor of the great state of Florida.”
The 39-year-old mayor of Tallahassee came closer than any other Democrat in 20 years to beating a Republican candidate for governor. Gillum’s unlikely win in the Democratic primary and his dynamic speaking style earned him a national fan base, and signaled that he’s likely to run for office again because, he said, his campaign was part of a “movement.”
In conceding, Gillum opted not to keep his options open by contesting the election, a long-shot effort that he and his advisers believed would be doomed to fail and corrosive for his brand.
Even President Donald Trump, who trashed Gillum as corrupt and feckless, had kind words about Gillum and said he was someone to watch.
“Congratulations to Andrew Gillum on having run a really tough and competitive race for Governor of the Great State of Florida,” Trump said on Twitter. “He will be a strong Democrat warrior long into the future – a force to reckon with!”
Apple would probably rather skip the references to Bendgate. It’s not like anyone’s walking around with an iPad Pro in their pocket, right?
That may be true, but it’s still alarming to see just how fragile the newly released iPad Pro actually is. YouTuber JerryRigEverything put the tablet through a multi-part stress test, including the damning bend test, and he was left with a mangled wreck of an Apple device.
This is a great video to check out if you’re mulling a new tablet purchase. While, yes, the iPad Pro is hardly pocket-sized, it’s very easy to imagine things getting bendy if someone were to accidentally sit on one.
This is also a fun show if you’re a fan of watching pricey new technology get systematically, violently torn apart in the name of science.
Kids in Texas will finally learn that slavery was the primary reason for all the fighting during the Civil War, and people can’t believe it took the state this long to decide that.
The state Board of Education confirmed that starting in 2019, public school curricula will include the fact that slavery played a “central role” in the war. During the vote Friday, the board also added Hellen Keller and Hillary Clinton back to the lesson plans. The two women were controversially removed in September in an effort to “streamline” the statewide standards.
The previous curriculum listed sectionalism and states’ rights before slavery in statewide social studies standards. According to NPR, Republican board member David Bradley wanted students to learn about the other causes because “each state had differences and made individual decisions as to whether or not to join into the conflict.”
“I mean, that’s the definition of states’ rights,” he argued.
Although Democrats on the board pushed for slavery to be the only taught cause of the Civil War, the majority-Republican board drew up a compromise. In the new set of standards, public schools will teach students about “the central role of the expansion of slavery in causing sectionalism, disagreements over states’ rights, and the Civil War.”
Lawrence Allen Jr., the only black member of the board, hopes the new standards will reinforce the connection between slavery and the Civil War since there’s no “consensus” over the war’s causes.
“And so if we can’t drive it to a consensus in our state, we need to let our students look at it from all points of view,” he said.
The wider population of Americans (and other social media users), however, can’t believe that it took Texas this long. Although it’s a step forward in acknowledging the country’s dark history, many believe it isn’t enough.
omg i’m teaching my brothers about slavery and they are beyond shook, this is why i don’t trust the texas education system. they should know this already
It’s outrageous that this even happened. The way we do (or don’t) memorialize history can directly affect the types of policies and laws within the state #LALS172@LALS_Falcon
And I’m sure we’ll still hear “The civil war wasn’t about slavery, it was about states rights.”… which is correct, except the absolute main concern was the states right for slavery.
And the Cornerstone Speech by Confederate Vice-President Alexander H. Stephens. Look it up. It says it all. The South seceded for ONE main reason: slavery.
Well u see. We don’t like to admit mistakes. Just like we don’t reaaaally talk about what happened to the Native Americans. Just that we “kindly” moved them around to make room for us.
The changes will take effect in August 2019 for middle and high school students, and 2020 for elementary schoolers, more than 156 years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the United States.
Commentator Bill Maher disparaged Stan Lee, the seminal creator of iconic comic book superheroes like Spider-Man, The Hulk, and The Fantastic Four, in an unsolicited 293-word Saturday morning blog titled “Adulting.”
Twitter was quick to rebut Maher’s cultural musings after he mocked the late Lee’s widely-appreciated work, belittled millions of people who value comics, and broadly labeled comics as “stupid stuff.”
“I’m not saying we’ve necessarily gotten stupider,” Maher wrote, before adding, “The problem is, we’re using our smarts on stupid stuff.”
Distilling decades of comic book history, culture, and meaning down to a short, oversimplified opinion is naturally going provoke the ire of the public, especially those who possess a greater familiarity of both comics and Lee’s intellectual influence.
As Mashable’s Adam Rosenberg wrote following the comic legend’s Nov. 12 death: “Lee, and through him Marvel, recognized that superheroes were still fundamentally human, capable of all the same flaws and fears as anyone else. It’s a mindset that led to more human stories, but also one that unavoidably flirted with the political climate as well.”
Sophisticated literature can come in many forms, and if you write off an entire industry because you’re too stupid to see that? Well. I feel sorry for you.
Also, Bill Maher’s show isn’t exactly sophisticated television compared to a Breaking Bad or a Sopranos.
I also notice that people who shit on comics as irrelevant don’t usually read them or haven’t since they were kids many decades ago. Kind of like hating opera, even though you can’t name a single one you’ve ever seen or listened to.
I never speak on topics I know little or nothing about. Why? I never want to be the fool. In other words, I don’t wanna make a Bill Maher out of myself.
It’s crazy to me that Bill Maher is using Stan Lee’s death to insult the maturity of comic book fans. It’s crazily out of character for him to try to assert his intellectual superiority over the ignorant masses in a shrill, strident, obnoxious and attention-seeking way.
As New York Times reporters Jonathan Kandell and Andy Webster noted, “Under Mr. Lee, Marvel transformed the comic book world by imbuing its characters with the self-doubts and neuroses of average people, as well an awareness of trends and social causes and, often, a sense of humor.”
Maher, forever a firestarter, probably wrote what he wrote to provoke a response. That doesn’t make the drags aimed at him any less entertaining, though.
Maher’s just trolling, and lots of people are rising to the troll. (Julie Burchill did it better 30 years ago with her “There aren’t any adult comics because adults don’t read comics” line. ) More people cared about Stan Lee’s death than care about Bill Maher alive. https://t.co/yRzFCYQBzl
The Ohio State Buckeyes survived another sluggish start to pass their final road test of the year by pulling out a 52-51 overtimevictory over the Maryland Terrapins in College Park on Saturday.
Dwayne Haskins led the way for Ohio State by throwing for 405yards and was responsible for six totaltouchdowns, with running back J.K. Dobbins (career-high 203 yards and one touchdown) also contributing to the victory.
Maryland running back Anthony McFarland ran for 298 yards and twotouchdowns.
Dwayne Haskins Can Carry Ohio State to Big Ten Title
Ohio State has struggled both on the ground and on defense, but it has still managed to stay in College Football Playoff contention—and it’s all thanks to Haskins.
The bad news for the rest of the college football world is that the sophomore star proved on Saturday that he can be more than just a one-dimensional passer.
Entering the game, Haskins had just 41 carries through the first 10 games of the season, good for just 34 yards. Only once did he have more than 10 rushing yards in a game, a 24-yard performance against Oregon State in the season opener.
The 6’3″, 220-pound quarterback had a different approach against Maryland, pulling the ball down and taking off when the opportunity presented itself. He finished with season highs in carries (15), yards (59)and rushing touchdowns (three).

Meanwhile, he also completed 28 of 38passes while leading his team to a come-from-behind victory.
Haskins was far from perfect; he lost a fumble and also threw a brutal pick-six at the beginning of the second half. But keeping defenses honest with his legs completely changes Ohio State’s offense—and the results showed in the team’s 283total rushing yards Saturday.
Some fans had been looking for dual-threat quarterback Tate Martell to take on a bigger role in the offense, especially in the red zone. But if Haskins is able to make plays with his legs as well as his arm, some of the Buckeyes’ issues could become irrelevant.
Ohio State isn’t earning any style points with the College Football Playoff committee, but it’s doing enough to stay in the mix. If the Buckeyes wind up winning a conference title this season, there’s no question Haskins will have been the MVP.
What’s Next
Ohio State (10-1) returns to Columbus for The Game against archrival Michigan, with the winner earning a trip to Indianapolis to take on Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game. Meanwhile, Maryland (5-6) will look to earn bowl eligibility in its regular-season finale against Penn State in Happy Valley.
