Incels.me, a major hub for hate speech and misogyny, suspended by domain registry

Incels.me, the toxic misogynistic community of self-proclaimed involuntary celibates, is no more — at least at that web address.

On Tuesday, the .ME registry, which controls the entire .ME domain database, published a post explaining that they — and not a domain registrar like GoDaddy — had suspended the domain. The registry says the domain was suspended over anti-abuse policy infractions based on the promotion of acts of violence and hate speech on the website. Incels.me has been inaccessible since Oct. 15.

Incels.me acted as the main online hub for involuntary celibates, or “incels” for short, who congregated in its forums. The incel community is known for its toxic misogynistic views, identifying themselves as “single without choosing to be so,” and blaming women as well as men in relationships for their own sexual failures.

“The decision to suspend the domain was made after the .ME Registry exhausted all other possibilities that could assure us that the registrant of incels.me domain and the owner of incels.me forum was able to remove the subject content and prevent the same or similar content from appearing on the forum again,” said the post.

The domain registry says it was monitoring incels.me since May after being notified about the website’s possible connection to a domestic terror attack.

SEE ALSO: Gab came back online, and immediately filled up with anti-semitism

Earlier this year, the forum received national media attention after a man attacked a crowd with a van in Toronto, killing 10. The driver, Alek Minassian, identified himself as an incel in online posts. In one Facebook post right before the attack, he wrote “the Incel Rebellion has already begun!” The forum praised Minassian as a “new saint.” This sentiment was not out of the ordinary for the incel community, which praises Elliot Rodger, a misogynist mass shooter who murdered six people in Isla Vista, California in 2015, as a hero. The incels.me forum, specifically, has been host to pedophilic, pro-rape sentiment and calls for more incel-inspired violence. Reddit banned its r/incels subreddit community over similar content in November 2017.

The .ME registry claims that it reached out to the registrant of the incels.me domain through the domain registrar — the company which the domain was actually registered through.

In this notice sent by the .ME registry in September, it informed the owner of incels.me of a possible suspension due to infractions of the registry’s anti-abuse policies. The registry also explained in this notice how to avoid this suspension by removing the offending content from the site and taking steps to avoid similar content from being posted in the future.

“Upon inspecting incels.me forum for policy violations on October 15th, the .ME Registry determined that the content that encouraged acts of violence and hate speech still appeared on the forum,” said the .ME registry in its post. “Having witnessed this disregard of not only .ME Registry’s policies and suspension warnings, but also of incels.me forum’s policies the domain registrant formulated themselves, the .ME Registry suspended the domain and decided that it would remain suspended.”

The registrants said in a press release that they were not given notice before .ME Registry took the site down.

The suspension may sound a bit reminiscent of Gab.com being booted from GoDaddy over content promoting violence and hate speech last month after a mass shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. In actuality, the two cases are a lot different.

GoDaddy, as a domain registrar, simply manages the domains registered on its platform. When GoDaddy informed Gab that they no longer wanted to be its domain registrar, Gab was able to transfer its domain to a different domain name company.

With incels.me, the domain was suspended by a registry, specifically in this case the .ME registry, which runs and maintains the database of all the top-level domains under its management. Incels.me being suspended by the registry means they can no longer use the domain in any capacity, regardless of where the domain was registered.

Scott Brooks Says Wizards Have ‘Moved On’ from John Wall Practice Altercation

Al Drago/Associated Press

Washington Wizards head coach Scott Brooks said Tuesday that the team is moving on from a contentious past week that included reports of fighting amongst players and star point guard John Wall saying “F–k you” to Brooks during a practice before later apologizing, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN.com:

“It happened last week. We moved on from it as a team. Not trying to minimize what happened, but in all sports, all teams I’ve been on—I’ve been in the league for almost 30 years as a player, as an assistant coach, as a head coach—that has happened.

“It’s something that you understand that it’s a competitive environment and a lot of times, you have adult conversations that get heated. And we all have to live with what we say and work things out when that does happen and move on.”

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, last Thursday’s practice got heated, with Bradley Beal and Austin Rivers having a confrontation and Wall and Jeff Green having another before Wall hurled the obscenity at Brooks, for which he was later fined.

And when Beal decided the team should air out its dirty laundry, tensions only rose:

“Just before the huddle, people who were present for the moment recounted, [Beal] said something along the lines of, ‘Let’s get it all out. Everybody say what you want to say.’

“A bunch of players did just that and it got heated.

“Beal walked off the floor. That’s when he said he was tired of the direction the group was heading, according to sources. It’s when he gestured to team president Ernie Grunfeld and declared, ‘I’ve been dealing with this s–t for seven years. It starts top-down,’ as The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported Monday.”

In the aftermath of the contentious practice—and amidst the team’s disappointing 5-11 start to the season—Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported the Wizards were making every player on the roster available in trade talks, even its stars:

“The Wizards have resisted involving Wall or Beal in previous trade talks, including discussions that they held for the league’s past two available stars, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler, league sources said. While Washington hasn’t shopped its All-Star backcourt, it is rapidly becoming apparent to the organization that it needs to start considering overtures for them.”

Beal is the most tradeable of the bunch. The 25-year-old is three years younger than Wall, has a far more palatable contract and a skill set that better fits the modern NBA, offering superior floor-spacing and perimeter shooting. But he is also arguably Washington’s best player, making him the star they should be building around going forward.

But while Beal will undoubtedly have countless suitors, Wall may be impossible to trade. For one, he has a 15 percent trade kicker:

Tom Haberstroh @tomhaberstroh

Seeing a lot of John Wall fake trades out there. There are 21 million reason$ he won’t be traded this season. That’s how much the Wizards would have to pay to fulfill Wall’s trade kicker if he was dealt tomorrow.

For another, Wall’s four-year, $170 million contract extension kicks in next season. For a high-usage point guard who isn’t particularly impactful on defense, has never been a consistent perimeter shooter and appears to have taken a step back this season, that’s an enormous salary-cap burden.

Yes, Wall still has blistering pace and is extremely dangerous in transition. But he isn’t the sort of transcendent superstar worth that contract. As Zach Lowe of ESPN.com aptly noted, “Wall is a lot like Russell Westbrook: Explosive, lacking a reliable jumper, with a bad habit of turning into a statue off the ball. Westbrook is just way better.”

Plenty of teams nonetheless would take a player like Wall on their team. It seems less likely that many will be jumping at the opportunity to add Wall’s salary, however.

In the interim, the Wizards have to make it work.

“We’ve got to keep moving,” Beal noted. “It’s easy when you’re losing to pinpoint it on, ‘Oh, there’s problems. They don’t get along. They fight.’ It’s easy to do that. It’s easy to do that.

“I’m not going to get caught up in it and my team damn sure isn’t, so we’re just going to come out and compete every night and do what we can to win. Because that’s what we’re here to do.”

If you see a Black Friday deal on these tech products, go for it

Black Friday is nearly here. And yes, that means we’re going into the deep end of the holiday season.

You probably have a list of people to buy gifts for, and you might be on the hunt for something special for yourself, too. Chances are your eye on a product or two, and you’re eagerly awaiting the price to drop.

SEE ALSO: One of the best early Black Friday gaming deals: Get an Xbox One S Minecraft bundle for $199 at Walmart

Black Friday is often your best bet for saving big on those products. Big-ticket items like 4K TVs will get some deep cuts along with more affordable options.

Here’s a list of top tech that you should snag immediately if a sale presents itself this Black Friday.

Amazon Echo Show

Image: ZLATA IVLEVA/MASHABLE

The second-generation Echo Show has a larger display, better sound, and a sleeker design. While it’s typically not so cheap at $229, there’s a good chance it will get a discount. The 10.1-inch screen is great for watching shows on Hulu or from NBC. Plus it can be used for karaoke through Amazon Music or Spotify since it can show lyrics. Moreover, if you want immediate gratification, Whole Foods has it in store.

Furbo Dog Camera

Image: ZLATA IVLEVA/MASHABLE

Dog owners, listen up. Leaving your dog is often sad, especially when they look at you as you’re closing the door. Furbo’s Dog Camera lets you watch, talk, and shoot a treat at your four-legged friend while away. While the camera is stationary, it’s weighted, so your pup can’t knock it over. It can shoot a treat or two out several feet. The HD camera can’t be panned, but you can zoom in, and it performs well in dark lighting conditions.

Apple AirPods

Image: lili sams/mashable

Apple’s AirPods, its true-wireless headphones, have become ubiquitous. They cost a decent amount at $159, but they’re also a few years old now, and you may see some great discounts on them this year. iPhone users really can’t go wrong with them. Bluetooth pairing is ridiculously easy thanks to the W1 chip, and sound is very good.

Totallee Thin Cases

Image: totallee

Apple’s iPhones have a great design, and the same goes for several Android phones. Some people value protection over style, but ideally you want a case that compliments the design. Totallee makes ultra-thin cases that look amazing (especially for iPhones). Even better, the cases come in many colors and finishes, including a clear option.

UGGs Combo Headphone Earmuffs

Image: ugg

Ugg might be known for super warm boots, but at least one tech product is in its lineup. The Classic Tech Earmuff or Sheepskin Headband Earmuff packs in warmth and a fuzzy build, while also sneaking a pair of headphones in each ear. The sheepskin on either of these is water resistant, and the auxiliary cord can be attached or detached. For devices that have dropped the headphone jack (i.e. most flagship phones today), you’ll need to bring an adapter.

SanDisk microSD Cards

Image: sandisk

Everyone can always use more storage. Androids owners, GoPro users, avid DSLR shooters, and even Nintendo Switch gamers. SanDisk makes some of the best microSD cards that offer fast read and write times, with storage options from 16GB up to 400GB size. Check retailers like Amazon.com, Target, BestBuy, eBay, and even Walmart for some steep discounts.

Bose QuietComfort 35 II

Image: DIAMOND NAGA SIU/MASHABLE

A good pair of headphones doesn’t come cheap, especially with noise cancellation built-in. The current Bose QC 35 II is one of the better ones, with several levels of noise cancellation, Alexa or the Google Assistant built-in, and long battery life. The cost is high at $349.95, but Black Friday could deliver some discounts on them.

Amazon Echo Dot

<img class="" data-credit-name="
” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!d525″ data-image=”https://ift.tt/2Q78eIQ; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/YGnuBlXI2v2TbNnxW9uNiXd5eAc=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F885628%2F6dc4f2f4-02a1-4b7f-b7b2-584e7a593f70.jpg”>

Image:

The entry-level Alexa speaker is the Echo Dot. For 2018 it got a redesign, with better sound. It keeps that same $49.99 price, and there’s a good chance it’ll get discounted for Black Friday. Plus Amazon is offering three of them together for under $100.

Samsung SmartThings Wifi

Image: ZLATA IVLEVA/MASHABLE

Samsung’s second go at a mesh WiFi system combines internet connectivity with a smart home network. The SmartThings WiFi three-pack covers up to 4,500 square feet with WiFi, ideal for most homes. Each of these hubs intelligently provided internet to the connected devices. Plus, each one contains ZigBee and Z-Wave connectivity to power your smart home.

Nimble Wireless Dual Pad

Image: nimble

Listen, AirPower still isn’t here, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t charging pads that can handle more than one device. Nimble is an eco-friendly mobile accessory company from the team behind Mophie. You can charge two devices wirelessly on the Wireless Dual Pad. It also supports fast charging with iPhone and Samsung devices thanks to an output of up to 10 watts.

This is not a drill: You can save $100 on Amazon when you buy two Echo Spots.

Smart devices are so great, right? You can control your lights, music, and TV with just the sound of your voice. But while they are becoming more ubiquitous every day, most smart devices are a bit impersonal. The Echo Spot is not like the others though: it’s a smart device that has personality to fit every need. So much in fact, that we’re giving these as gifts to everyone on our list this year — which is why we’re so excited about this deal.

The Echo Spot can do everything you’ve come to expect from Amazon devices, like show you the news, give you weather updates, play your music, and control your other smart devices via Alexa. The best part through is that you can pick and choose your own interface and display from a wide range of options.

If you want the Echo Spot to be an alarm clock, it has a clock face setting. If you want the Echo Spot to be your primary news source, it has a setting for various news outlets like CNN. If you want the Echo Spot to be your music hub, it works as a Bluetooth speaker that can show you music lyrics on its 2.5-inch touchscreen display with Amazon Music, as well as Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and Audible for audiobooks. The Amazon device can even be used for video chats or as a baby monitor when the Ring Video Doorbell or Amazon Cloud Cam are synced to it.

While one Echo Spot is on sale for $129.99 in honor of Black Friday, if you buy two, you can get them for just $159.98 — that’s a $100 savings.

Amazon customer Elizabeth Z writes:

“The Echo Spot is everything I thought it would be, and more. I love being able to play Prime videos and music from what essentially is taking the place of my alarm clock. It’s also great to be able to check in on my various security cameras and control my Philips Hue lights. The screen is small (as expected) but still has great playback quality. I really like the analog clock faces and it would be great if even more were released for some variety. I can’t think of any drawbacks to this product. It was worth the wait.”

Camila Mendes Talks ‘Redefining’ Romance With Her New Sugar Baby Rom-Com

Michael Stewart/WireImage

For Camila Mendes, the key to a successful relationship is simple. “I think communication is everything, and not feeling ashamed of your feelings,” she told MTV News. “The more you share with your partner about where you’re at emotionally, the better it is for the relationship and the more the other person will feel comfortable to share their feelings.”

This position holds true for any type of relationship, be it romantic, platonic, or even transactional — like those she partakes in in her latest movie, The New Romantic.

In the indie flick, on iTunes and VOD now, Mendes plays Morgan, a sugar baby who introduces student journalist Blake (Jessica Barden) to the plush lifestyle. For the uninitiated, a sugar relationship is one in which a younger person (sugar baby) enters a relationship with an older, wealthy person (sugar daddy/momma) — complete with whatever relationship benefits both parties agree upon, from platonic hangouts to sex — in exchange for gifts or money.

The Orchard Movies

It’s an arrangement that sounds pretty far from the romance we’re used to championing onscreen. Although, the way the actress sees it, sugaring isn’t so different from traditional relationships, and her passionate reasoning in support of the pay-to-play arrangement is actually pretty feminist.

“I think if anything all we need to do is just accept the fact that these women have the right to decide for themselves what they want to do,” she said. (For the record, Mendes does identify as a feminist — “Of course, absolutely I do” — particularly when it comes to “being fully comfortable with my sexuality and not feeling any shame about it.”)

It’s a stance Mendes has been developing for years. In college, long before she ever saw a script for The New Romantic, her social circle provided her with a wealth of second-hand knowledge. “There was one girl who I was better friends with, she would share her stories,” Mendes recalled. “She had no shame about it whatsoever. For her, it was kind of empowering. She used to always say it’s taking advantage of a flawed system or turning the situation on its head.”

Getty Images

The cast of The New Romantic with writer-director Carly Stone (center).

To illustrate the similarities between a sugar relationship and a traditional courtship, let’s start with what matters to Mendes: communication. Creating an open and honest dialogue comes into play right at the onset of any sugar daddy/baby bond, when both sides establish what they are willing to contribute to the relationship. “If anything, the difference is that the sugar-baby date is way more definitive and clear about what the relationship is,” she said.

In terms of the actual dating of it all, much like any relationship, Mendes deemed sugaring a “case-by-case situation,” noting that a sugar baby is in complete control of who she sees, when she sees them, what she does with them, and how much she’s compensated — or, to put it another way, her worth.

“I learned that a lot with my friend who was a sugar baby,” Mendes said. “She’d talk about certain situations … like she’ll immediately recognize when she’s not comfortable with a person … and then she would cut off that connection immediately. But then there were people that she actually was attracted to and that she wanted to go on dates with, you know?”

The Orchard Movies

As the movie also points out, it’s not like sugar babies are creating entirely new dating decorum. “There already is this kind of inherent cultural dynamic where men seem to feel like they need to provide for a woman and they pay for all the dinners and blah blah blah,” Mendes argued. “I’m not saying that that’s how it should be, but given that that is a pretty normal dynamic that people want to adhere to, it’s like, well, then what difference does it make if it’s a sugar baby going on a date?”

So essentially, a sugar baby/daddy relationship complies with long-established social conventions, using mutually agreed-upon relationship guidelines so that both consenting parties feel their value is fully appreciated and are, thus, happy in their dynamic. Sure, it requires assigning a price to every action, but all relationships require some kind of give-and-take.

As Mendes noted, “It’s redefining the romance.”

Why major brands are heading to crowdfunding sites for product development insights

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint api production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fvideo uploaders%2fdistribution thumb%2fimage%2f87050%2fda2e1fac 512f 40ef b81c 775cd9b6c346

Pete Pachal

Ten years ago, Indiegogo launched the modern era of crowdfunding by creating a place where anyone could pitch their idea, product, or creative endeavor to the entire world, asking for the funds to make it reality. Today there are no shortage of crowdfunding sites, and even though Indiegogo isn’t as large as rival Kickstarter, it’s still tremendously influential, offering entrepreneurs not just a funding platform, but also support beyond their campaigns, with tools to ease the transition from concept to launch.

Indiegogo has always had a more worldwide audience than its peers, and now current CEO David Mandelbrot wants to take things further with more outreach to inventors in China as he leads the venture-funded company to profitability. Mandelbrot joined Mashable’s MashTalk podcast to talk about how crowdfunding has evolved since in the past decade, how the company approaches quality control, and what he thinks of Indiegogo’s “anything goes” reputation.
