Chase Daniel, Bears Beat Lions on Thanksgiving with Mitchell Trubisky Injured

DETROIT, MI - NOVEMBER 22: Quarterback Chase Daniel #4 of the Chicago Bears looks to pass against the Detroit Lions during the first quarter at Ford Field on November 22, 2018 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Leon Halip/Getty Images)

Despite playing without starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, the Chicago Bears defeated the Detroit Lions 23-16 on Thursday in a Thanksgiving Day NFC North clash at Ford Field in Detroit.

Chicago improved to 8-3 and maintained its spot atop the division, while Detroit fell to 4-7 and further damaged its already-faint playoff hopes.

The Bears made two key defensive plays late in the fourth quarter to win the game, including a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown by safety Eddie Jackson to break a 16-16 tie with six minutes left:

Cornerback Kyle Fuller then foiled Detroit’s comeback attempt by intercepting Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford in the end zone with 1:11 remaining.

Veteran Chase Daniel made his third career start Thursday in place of Trubisky, who was out with a shoulder injury.

The 32-year-old Daniel finished the game having completed 27 of 37 passes for 230 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Detroit was also without some key players on offense, as rookie running back Kerryon Johnson and wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. sat out with knee injuries.

The Lions also traded veteran wideout Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of October.

That placed much of the offensive burden on the shoulders of Stafford, and he was unable to make many big plays against Chicago’s dominant defense, finishing 28-of-38 for 236 yards with no touchdowns and two picks.

Detroit secured a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by LeGarrette Blount, but the Bears pulled ahead 9-7 shortly before halftime when Daniel found running back Taquan Mizzell for a 10-yard touchdown with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter:

NFL @NFL

@ChaseDaniel: Pass the touchdowns! 🏈

📺#CHIvsDET on CBS https://t.co/1IfOMgoDyR

Blount gave the Lions the lead back late in third quarter when he scored from four yards out to make it 13-9.

The veteran running back was Detroit’s offensive star, with 88 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

A 14-yard touchdown pass from Daniel to running back Tarik Cohen put Chicago back on top by three in the fourth quarter, and Jackson put the game away for the Bears after Detroit tied it with a field goal.

Bears Are Only Average Without Trubisky

Daniel put up solid numbers Thursday, but it was clear that Chicago sorely missed Trubisky’s dual-threat ability in a tight game.

The second-year quarterback led Chicago to a 7-3 start and has impressive stats on the season with 2,469 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions through the air, along with 363 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Head coach Matt Nagy clearly favors throwing the ball over running it, as pointed out by Matt Eurich of 247Sports:

Matt Eurich @MattEurich

Matt Nagy when thinking about the running game:

“Nah”

As a team, the Bears rushed just 15 times for 38 yards Thursday, which put the offense mainly in Daniel’s hands.

That game plan has worked well for Trubisky this season, but Daniel isn’t the type of quarterback who can win games on his own.

Daniel primarily did his damage with underneath passes against the Lions, and Jason B. Hirschhorn of SB Nation suggested Chicago would’ve been better off incorporating more of the ground game:

Jason B. Hirschhorn @by_JBH

Matt Nagy might as well run the Wing T during the fourth quarter. The Bears can’t do much worse with Chase Daniel at quarterback.

The Bears have a supremely talented defense that allowed just 333 total yards and 17 first downs, but in order to compete with elite NFC teams such as the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints come playoff time, Chicago needs to put points on the board offensively.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported the Bears may have to play without Trubisky for the next few weeks:

Jason La Canfora @JasonLaCanfora

Trubisky could be out a few weeks. Bears are in good hands with Chase Daniel. He knows system inside out. Has extreme trust from teammates and coaches

While La Canfora is confident the Bears can win with Daniel at the helm, there is far less margin for error with Trubisky out, especially if Nagy refuses to establish the ground game with Jordan Howard.

The Bears have built a bit of a cushion for the playoff spot over the first 11 weeks of the season, but an extended absence from Trubisky could shrink or eliminate the separation both in the NFC North and in the wild-card race.

Chicago can hang with middling teams like the Lions, but if Trubisky isn’t back within two weeks, the Bears may be in for a rude awakening when they face the NFC-leading Rams on Dec. 9.

Johnson, Not Stafford, the Key to Lions’ Offensive Success

Much of the blame for Thursday’s loss will fall on Stafford’s shoulders in the coming days due to his late-game failures.

While he nearly bounced back from the pick-six to Jackson, his game-ending interception to Fuller prevented him from redeeming himself:

NFL @NFL

ANOTHER PICK!

That @ChicagoBears defense wants seconds. #DaBears

📺: #CHIvsDET on CBS https://t.co/YuqCfyBSdh

The biggest issue for Stafford was the fact that he was unable to make plays down the field with only Kenny Golladay to count on as a quality, trusted receiver.

Also, with the exception of a 27-yard rumble by Blount in the fourth quarter, Detroit was unable to get much going on the ground.

The Lions clearly missed Johnson, who has been one of the best rookies in the NFL this season.

Andy Benoit of Sports Illustrated is so impressed by Johnson that he sees many years of big-time production in his future:

Andy Benoit @Andy_Benoit

Kerryon Johnson will be one of those RBs who has at least 1,100 yards rushing, 500 receiving every season. That’s his baseline.

Johnson has rushed for 641 yards and three touchdowns this season, and he is averaging 5.4 yards per carry. He has also caught 32 passes for 213 yards and one score.

Per Chris Emma of 670 The Score, Johnson has been directly responsible for the Lions’ four wins this season:

Chris Emma @CEmma670

Kerryon Johnson’s top four rushing games helped the Lions to their four wins. They are 0-6 in the others. Detroit has a major void to fill on offense, and against one of the league’s top defenses.

In addition to his statistical production, Johnson is hugely important to the Detroit offense in terms of keeping opposing defenses honest.

The Bears were able to focus primarily on shutting down Stafford and the passing game, which resulted in poor numbers for the veteran quarterback.

Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk was disgusted by how conservatively Stafford had to play Thursday:

Michael David Smith @MichaelDavSmith

I mean it’s just preposterous for Matthew Stafford to ever be 17-for-23 for 92 yards. The Lions are now two seasons into the huge contract they gave him and they’ve accomplished nothing toward putting together an offense that takes advantage of his big arm. https://t.co/UXlYcRhn6Q

While Detroit’s system is partly to blame, Johnson’s absence meant there were few opportunities to take advantage of the extra defensive players in the box.

The Lions offense has long been predicated on Stafford and the passing game, but if Detroit is going to take advantage of a fairly easy schedule down the stretch, it will need a healthy Johnson in the lineup and leading the offense with his dual-threat ability.

What’s Next?

Provided Trubisky is healthy enough to return, the Bears will likely be a heavy favorite when they face the 3-7 New York Giants on the road next week.

Meanwhile, the Lions will have a major challenge on their hands when they host the 10-1 Rams, who boast the best record in the NFL this season.

California: Rain helps fight wildfire, hampers search for remains

The first significant rain in months in northern California all but extinguished the deadliest wildfire in the state’s history on Wednesday but also raised risks of flash flooding that could hinder teams searching for human remains.

Between 102-152mm of rain was expected to fall through the weekend in areas around the town of Paradise, the community of nearly 27,000 people 280km northeast of San Francisco that was largely incinerated by the so-called Camp Fire.

The blaze killed at least 83 people and 563 remain unaccounted for, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told a news briefing on Wednesday.

“The rain is a concern for us and there is the potential for mudflows,” Honea said. Searchers would be pulled out of areas threatened by mudslides, he said.

Richard Ventura of Orange County’s FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team said on Thursday the rainy, windy, cold conditions are making the search process “miserable.”

His team has 27 people involved in the effort in northern California.

Ventura said the rain “clumps things together” while making the terrain soggy and harder for workers to see and move.

The storm added to the misery of evacuees camped out in a Walmart parking lot in nearby Chico.

Mitchell Manley was cold and wet but thankful he persuaded his elderly mother to evacuate. He said most of the dead were retirees who thought they could ride out the flames in their homes.

“I was lucky to get her out, she was going to sit it out,” said Manley, who was camping at Walmart while he waited to go back to his home in Concow.

Warehouses were opened in Chico to provide evacuees protection from the cold and rain. Others are being welcomed by nearby families for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Some 830 people had signed up to spend their Thanksgiving combing through ash and rubble in forecast heavy rain, searching for human remains, Honea said.

Rivers of mud possible

The rains, which in some areas were likely to be accompanied by winds of up to 72kph, raised risks of ravines turning into rivers of mud. The fire has burned across 62,000 hectares of the Sierra foothills and is 85 percent contained.

“There’s no vegetation to hold the earth and there’s a risk it could just start moving, with mud carrying everything in its path,” National Weather Service forecaster Johnnie Powell said in Sacramento.

Firefighters installed straw tubes known as wattles to stop hillsides being washed away.

“With the heavy rains, the fire activity is practically nothing,” said Cal Fire Operation Section Chief Josh Bishop.

The death toll has been gradually rising, with two more names added to the list on Wednesday to bring the total to 83 people, with 58 of them tentatively identified, Honea said.

The number of people unaccounted for, which has fluctuated widely over the past week, declined by 307.

Asked about the effects of rain on the search for remains, Honea said it would make going through debris more difficult but he was less concerned about remains washing away than the headaches posed by mud.

Still, he said some remains might never be found.

“What we’re looking for in many respects are very small bone fragments so, as we go forward, it’s certainly possible that not all of them will be located,” Honea said.

An anthropologist examines the remains of a dog found in a bathtub in a home destroyed by the Camp Fire in Paradise [Terray Sylvester/Reuters]

The Camp Fire incinerated 13,503 homes in and around Paradise. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The state is undertaking the largest single wildfire cleanup operation in its history to remove toxic and radioactive ash and debris at burned home sites, said Eric Lamoureux from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

Butte County says evidence from recent fires in California showed that some destroyed homes and property contained “high and concerning levels of heavy metals, lead, mercury, dioxin, arsenic and other carcinogens. Some property may have the presence of radioactive materials.”

Jordan criticised over renaming brigade after UAE crown prince

Senior Jordanian military officers have expressed displeasure over the renaming of one of the country’s combat brigades after the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

On Tuesday, King Abdullah II presided over a ceremony where the military renamed one of its special forces units “Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Rapid Intervention/High Readiness Brigade” from “Desert Brigade”, angering many of Jordan’s armed forces high command.

The move is “deeply insulting to Jordan’s military traditions”, said a senior officer who wished to remain anonymous.

“Sadly, it looks like money can change and buy everything, including our military and its traditions.”

Jordanian military officers are barred from commenting publicly about political and military issues, including the renaming of the brigade, and could be charged if found to have done so.

The UAE signed a $100m grant agreement with the Jordan’s Crown Prince Foundation during al-Nahyan’s visit to the country on Tuesday to support business development in Jordan.

“The renaming of the brigade is ill-conceived and it contradicts Jordan’s military values,” Mahmoud Hammad, a retired general and former commander of Jordan’s land forces, told Al Jazeera.

“The military divisions are named after royal family members and historic Muslim commanders. I respect Abu Dhabi’s crown prince and his late father but to have one of Jordan’s armed forces units named after him is just too much.”

— RHC (@RHCJO) November 20, 2018

Earlier, a statement by Jordan’s royal court said: “Naming the brigade after the UAE crown prince is an expression of the deep brotherly ties between the two nations.”

The brigade was established in 2014 during the Syrian civil war with the help of the US army.

The US Central Command, which lists Jordan, Syria and Iraq as part of its area of responsibility, envisioned the brigade as a strike force to target ISIL fighters in Iraq and Syria.

The US also equipped the brigade with eight US-made Blackhawk helicopters.

Since the 1960s, Jordanian military officers have trained and advised UAE and other Gulf militaries.

Jordan currently has “between 80 and 100” combat special forces that support the UAE’s efforts in the war in Yemen, according to senior Jordanian officers.

White House considers plan to keep asylum seekers in Mexico

Part of the migrant caravan

The White House is weighing a plan to require Central American migrants to remain in Mexico while their asylum requests are pending.

The proposed change, first reported Wednesday night in the Washington Post, would be a departure from current procedure, which allows asylum seekers to remain in the U.S. until their case is reviewed by an immigration judge.

Story Continued Below

The plan could move forward as soon as Friday, the Post reported, though a Homeland Security spokeswoman vehemently denied any such action was imminent.

“DHS is not implementing such a new enforcement program at this time,” DHS spokeswoman Katie Walsh said in an email. “Reporting on policies that do not exist creates uncertainty and confusion along our borders and has a negative real world impact.”

“We will ensure — as always — that any new program or policy will comply with humanitarian obligations, uphold our national security and sovereignty, and is implemented with notice to the public and well coordinated with partners,” Walsh said.

Under the plan, the Post reported, Central American refugees who cannot establish “credible fear” of persecution in Mexico will be turned away at the border. “If you are not determined to have a reasonable fear of remaining in Mexico, you will remain in Mexico,” a DHS memo said, according to the Post.

Rumors of the proposed change began circulating last week, an immigration advocate told POLITICO, though an exact timeline for announcing the change remains unclear.

“It’s definitely something that they’re trying to move forward,” said Jennifer Quigley, a strategist for Human Rights First.

DHS is still finalizing the plan, according to a former Obama Justice Department official familiar with the memos, making it unlikely that the White House will announce it this week. The official described the plan as a workaround to put pressure on Mexico.

Internal strife over the administration’s asylum policies escalated in recent days, with Chief of Staff John Kelly and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen vocally opposing a Cabinet order granting the troops deployed at the southern border the right to use lethal force to defend border patrol agents. The pair relented eventually, though the exchange revived speculation that Trump will soon fire Nielsen — an idea he’s floated to friends and associates since the midterm elections.

To carry out its latest asylum plan, the administration would likely have to convince Mexico to cooperate — a difficult task, Quigley said, since Mexico has far fewer asylum officers to handle the influx of refugees. Mexican officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The plan could spell more legal trouble for the Trump administration, which has lost a string of court battles in an effort to stop migrants traveling to the U.S. A federal judge in San Francisco this week temporarily halted a fast-track regulation and presidential proclamation issued Nov. 9 that barred migrants who cross the border between ports of entry from seeking asylum.

Immigration advocates likely would challenge the latest plan. Federal law states that asylum seekers intercepted by border officers “shall be detained for further consideration of the application.” If it’s determined the person does not have a “credible fear of persecution,” the law says, that person will be “removed from the United States without further hearing or review.”

“That’s where you get into legally dubious territory,” Quigley said.

Trump has repeatedly called migrant caravans a national security threat and dispatched 5,800 troops to the border before the midterm elections. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts on Wednesday bluntly criticized Trump’s attacks on the courts after the president excoriated the “Obama judge“ who halted his asylum order.

“We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” Roberts said in a statement. “What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.”

Gabby Orr contributed to this report.

Daniel Radcliffe explains why he won’t see ‘Cursed Child’

There’s a certain amount of pressure on Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, but Radcliffe revealed why he hasn’t and likely won’t.

“It would not be a relaxing evening at the theater,” Radcliffe told Seth Meyers on Late Night. “I feel like I would be being watched for my reaction.”

SEE ALSO: Harry Potter play ‘Puffs’ now available for purchase

“Maybe that is completely conceited and egotistical and people wouldn’t care,” Radcliffe added about his paranoia, “but I do feel if I was just surrounded by Harry Potter fans, I’d feel like…it would be a little odd.”

He also assured Meyers that he isn’t avoiding the play because it might “throw me into some sort of existential crisis” (it might, though).

Meyers suggested Radcliffe go see the show in disguise. Might we suggest a character?

Trump issues Thanksgiving threat: I’ll close border if I have to

President Donald Trump is threatening to close the US border with Mexico for an undisclosed period of time if his administration determines that its southern ally has lost “control” on its side.

The repeated threat, which came on Thanksgiving Day in the US, is in response to thousands of migrants and refugees who have arrived in border town of Tijuana, many hoping to apply for asylum

“If we find that it’s uncontrollable,” Trump said, “we will close entry into the country for a period of time until we can get it under control. The whole border.”

Thousands of Central Americans, fleeing violence, extreme poverty and political persecution, have made their way to the border over the last month as part of a caravan, dubbed the Central American exodus. Thousands more are following behind

Caravans from the region are not rare, but this one is unusual for its size. Migrants and refugees often prefer to travel in groups to avoid the dangerous journey through Mexico to the border.

According to Mexico’s Baja California state governor, more than 5,600 migrants and refugees have arrived in the Tijuana area in recent days, and the stadium sheltering individuals is now over capacity.

Migrants and refugees stand in line for a meal after arriving in Tijuana, Mexico [Jorge Duenes/Reuters]

Central Americans who are part of the collective exodus have shared harrowing stories of being forced to leave their homes due to threats or violence. Others, including those with or caring for individuals with disabilities or health conditions, are hoping to find work in the United States to afford medical treatment

Since the initial collective exodus set off from Honduras in October, Trump has sought to sow fear, often falsely labelling the group as an “invasion” and saying, without giving evidence, the caravan is full of “criminals”.

Authority to use lethal force

The president also deployed thousands of troops to the border, and this week gave the US defence chief expanded powers to use the military to protect US Border Patrol agents. On Thursday, Trump confirmed that he gave troops the “ok” to use lethal force against migrants and refugees “if they have to”, even though there have been no signs of violence towards US authorities.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is set to hold a “large-scale operational readiness exercise” at the San Ysidro port of entry in Tijuana on Thursday.

A boy, part of a caravan of thousands travelling from Central America en route to the United States, walks through a makeshift camp in Mexico City [Hannah McKay/Reuters]

The administration also implemented new asylum rules on the border, which were temporarily blocked by a US judge.

Under the new rules, individuals crossing the border between official ports of entry would not be eligible for asylum. Rights groups call the rules a violation of US and international laws.

On Monday, US District Judge John Tigar issued a temporary nationwide restraining order prohibiting the enforcement of the policy, saying “Whatever the scope of the president’s authority, he may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden.”
