Iran unveils new domestically made warship

Iran’s navy launched a domestically made destroyer, which state media said has radar-evading stealth properties, amid rising tensions with the United States.

In a ceremony carried live on state television on Saturday, the Sahand destroyer – which can sustain voyages lasting five months without resupply – joined Iran’s navy at a base in Bandar Abbas on the Gulf.

The Sahand has a flight deck for helicopters, torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-ship guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and electronic warfare capabilities, state television reported.

US President Donald Trump pulled out of an international agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme in May and reimposed sanctions on Tehran. He said the deal was flawed because it did not include curbs on Iran’s development of ballistic missiles or its support for proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq.

The Trump administration has said its goal is to reduce Iran’s oil exports to zero. Senior Iranian officials have said that if Iran is not allowed to export, then no other countries will be allowed to export oil through the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf.

“This vessel is the result of daring and creative design relying on the local technical knowledge of the Iranian Navy… and has been built with stealth capabilities,” Rear-Admiral Alireza Sheikhi, head of the navy shipyards that built the destroyer, told the state news agency IRNA.

Iran launched its first locally made destroyer in 2010 as part of a programme to revamp its navy equipment which dates from before the 1979 Islamic revolution and is mostly US-made.

Iran has developed a large domestic arms industry in the face of international sanctions and embargoes that have barred it from importing many weapons.

Separately, a naval commander said Sahand may be among warships that Iran plans to send on a mission to Venezuela soon.

“Among our plans in the near future is to send two or three vessels with special helicopters to Venezuela in South America on a mission that could last five months,” Iran’s deputy navy commander, Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani Moqaddam, told the semi-official news agency Mehr.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said last week Iran should increase its military capability and readiness to ward off enemies, in a meeting with Iranian navy commanders.

Iran’s navy has extended its reach in recent years, launching vessels in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian ships from Somali pirates operating in the area.

The chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces said in 2016 that Iran may seek to set up naval bases in Yemen or Syria in the future, raising the prospect of distant footholds perhaps being more valuable militarily to Tehran than nuclear technology.

In August, Iranian state media showed President Hassan Rouhani unveiling new domestic made fighter jet.

Blue economies: Growth through humanity’s relationship with water

All life on Earth is dependent on water. Together with carbon, it is one of the most important building blocks of all living organisms, from the smallest animal to the largest tree.

However, as humanity’s impact on the global environment has increased in the last hundred years, issues such as pollution, coral bleaching and overfishing have become significantly larger, damaging important ecosystems around the globe.

In an attempt to create plans to battle these negative effects, the Kenyan capital Nairobi this week was the location for the world’s first Sustainable Blue Economy Conference, a summit focusing on how countries can benefit from what is called a Blue Economy.

More than 15,000 participants shared ideas about marine life, environmental protection and how the globe can benefit from the blue economy.

The conference built on “the momentum of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 2015 Climate Change Conference in Paris and the UN Ocean Conference 2017 Call to Action”, its website states.

Creating that blue economy is a challenge, with global warming, plastic pollution and overfishing as some of the main issues that need to be tackled.

The idea behind building a blue economy is that countries should use oceans and seas to their full advantage without that leading to the suffering of aquatic life, pollution or other negative effects.

This does not only include the world’s oceans, but also seas, lakes, rivers and smaller bodies of water.

“The world has rallied around the enormous pressures facing our oceans and waters, from plastic pollution to the impacts of climate change,” the summit’s website said. “At the same time, there is international recognition that we need to develop our waters in an inclusive and sustainable manner for the benefit of all.”

The key to a blue economy is finding the middle road between sustainability and economic growth, often achieved with the help of innovative and new technologies.

Since the ocean has suffered immensely over the last decades from the world’s rapid economic growth, the damage done now has to be restored, but a blue economy would do so without hurting the economic prospects of people.

First off, this means minimising carbon emissions by switching to more sustainable energy sources and making sure that for instance shipping routes are the most effective and provide the least possible amount of pollution.

Another important aspect of the blue economy is making sure that economic growth is sustained without exhausting natural resources.

Therefore, during the Nairobi summit, topics such as illegal fishing and overfishing played an important role.

Because of illegal and overfishing, fish stocks have decreased significantly over the last couple of decades, leading to major changes in marine ecosystems, and scientists have warned that these stocks need to increase to ensure healthy oceans.

Another important issue that plays a key role in achieving the goals of the blue economy is pollution.

Over the last couple of years, increasingly more attention has been paid to oceanic pollution, especially when it comes to remnants of plastic that have made their way into those ecosystems, with the most striking example the so-called great garbage patch in the middle of the Pacific.

Several attempts are currently under way to decrease the amount of plastic in the seas and oceans, with for example a private organisation trying to collect plastic trash from the water and the European Union banning single-use plastic items such as straws in the future.

Finally, blue economies want make sure that marine reserves and coral reefs grow and become healthier.

In recent years, a number of large marine reserves were appointed in an attempt to protect the ecosystems in these areas, including reserves off the coast of the US West Coast, near the Antarctic and one near Costa Rica.

But on the other hand, environmental agencies have warned coral bleaching has become a major issue for marine life.

Not only are corals themselves living beings, they also host a large number of other animals that have suffered from the abysmal state of some of the world’s most important reefs like the Great Barrier Reef near Australia.

By focusing mostly on environmental issues, the blue economy is very similar to the green economy, the main difference being that a blue economy mostly focuses on humanity’s relationship with water in all its forms.

The hope is that in the end, if all these issues are tackled, blue economies should not only lead to healthier environments for plants and animals, but also lead to better lives for humans.

The ultimate goal is that blue economies will lead to more human prosperity as well, not because they use up resources provided by the oceans, seas, lakes and rivers, but because a relationship has been found that provides enough for both humans as well as aquatic life to thrive, without either of them being effected negatively.

Ex-US Justice official pleads guilty in 1MDB lobbying scandal

A former US Justice Department official has pleaded guilty to banking violations as part of an attempt to lobby Washington to drop an investigation into a money laundering and bribery scheme that pilfered billions from Malaysia‘s 1MDB investment fund.

George Higginbotham, 46, admitted on Friday to lying to US banks while transferring tens of millions of dollars to fund a lobbying campaign on behalf of Low Taek Jho – the 1MDB affair’s alleged mastermind.

The massive corruption investigation, which upended Malaysian politics, spanned the globe with the money from the state fund gambled in Las Vegas, spent on diamond jewelry and a luxury yacht and used to finance the “Wolf of Wall Street” and other Hollywood productions.

The long-ruling coalition in Malaysia was ousted in a May election, and then-Prime Minister Najib Razak, who set up the fund, now faces criminal charges there.

In August, US prosecutors charged Low, who is at large, with eight counts of money laundering.

Low, who has maintained his innocence through a spokesman, is accused of helping orchestrate the theft of $4.5bn from the government-backed investment fund.

Higginbotham’s guilty plea in a federal court in Washington marked the first public acknowledgment of a secret attempt to pressure US officials to shut down their investigation into the 1MDB scheme.

Prosecutors said Higginbotham, who worked on the congressional affairs staff in the Justice Department’s Office of Justice Programs, helped open bank accounts and created false loan documents for shell companies to pay an influential person to pressure officials to drop their probe.

That person’s identity wasn’t revealed in court.

Higginbotham falsely claimed in emails to banks that the money was being used to fund entertainment ventures and failed to disclose that it was, in fact, being used to finance the lobbying effort to shut down the 1MDB investigation, prosecutors said.

Higginbotham “did not play a role” in the Justice Department’s investigation and failed to influence any aspect of it, the agency said in a statement.

US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said Higginbotham likely faced a sentence of up to 16 months in federal prison, but said he could also face no jail time.

As part of a plea deal, Higginbotham has agreed to testify before grand juries and speak to federal investigators.

Higginbotham pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to make false statements to a bank and was released without bail on Friday. He is due back in court in March.

The Justice Department separately announced Friday it was seeking to recover $73m held in American bank accounts that Higginbotham and Prakazrel “Pras” Michel opened last year on Low’s behalf.

Earlier in November, US prosecutors unveiledcriminal charges against Low and two former Goldman Sachs bankers tied to the massive theft.

Washington Punches Ticket to Rose Bowl with Win vs. Utah in Pac-12 Championship

SANTA CLARA, CA - NOVEMBER 30: Byron Murphy #1 of the Washington Huskies returns an interception for a touchdown against the Utah Utes during the Pac 12 Championship game at Levi's Stadium on November 30, 2018 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Sophomore cornerback Byron Murphy had two interceptions—including one returned for the game’s only touchdown—as No. 11 Washington defeated No. 17 Utah, 10-3, in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Friday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Murphy’s 66-yard pick-six with 1:05 remaining in the third quarter gave Washington a 9-3 advantage.

The 10-3 Huskies won their second Pac-12 title in three seasons. Utah made its first-ever conference title matchup after winning the Pac-12 South.

The Utes fell to 9-4.

Byron Murphy and Taylor Rapp Are Future First-Round Draft Picks

Murphy and junior safety Taylor Rapp have enjoyed dominant individual seasons, to the point where the duo look like future first-round NFL draft picks.

Murphy may be the best cornerback in the nation, as noted by these numbers from Pro Football Focus:

Byron Murphy is currently the nation’s highest-graded cornerback https://t.co/JROJwGSPKa

PFF also credited Murphy with allowing just 9.3 yards per reception.

Murphy’s first interception was a thing of beauty, as he showed excellent ball skills in grabbing a dropped pass and returning it to the house for six:

He showcased those skills yet again on his second pick, which occurred with 4:27 left in the game:

Rapp also had a big play of his own before the first half, as his sack pushed Utah out of field-goal range:

📺 FOX https://t.co/9Nsu4T5o4b

Like Murphy, PFF also praised Rapp, revealing that he was one of top five safeties in the country on November 21:

Washington State’s passing attack will have to contend with Washington’s Byron Murphy & Taylor Rapp – each of whom are graded in the top-5 of their position currently

https://t.co/4VimpTIhCc https://t.co/EaBfpcIxW5

NFL scoring is higher than ever with teams averaging 24.1 points per game, which is buoyed by quarterback-friendly rules and innovating passing offenses. Teams will need strong playmakers in the secondary to help slow down opposing offenses, and Murphy and Rapp certainly fit that bill.

Washington Has Good Chance to Upset Ohio State in Rose Bowl

If Washington faces Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, don’t sleep on the Huskies winning the game outright.

According to Football Outsiders, Washington’s defense was ranked 13th in efficiency in the FBS heading into Friday. Aside from the aforementioned efforts of Murphy and Rapp, Washington has a tackling machine in linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven, who amassed 155 regular-season stops. The Huskies also held Washington State, which averaged 38.3 points per game, to just 15 in the Apple Cup on November 23.

Ohio State’s offense is one of the best in the FBS with a 43.3-point-per-game average. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins leads a deadly passing attack, and J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber form a dynamic rushing duo.

However, Burr-Kiven can help neutralize the rushing attack, and Murphy and Rapp are capable of making big plays to shut down the OSU offense.

On the other side of the ball, the Huskies could get going against a Buckeyes team that has allowed 31 or more points in four of its last five games. The OSU run defense is susceptible to big games, like when Maryland running back Anthony McFarland Jr. rushed for 298 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Washington has a solid backfield option in senior Myles Gaskin, who has rushed for 55 touchdowns in his four-year career.

Gaskin, who is ranked as a top-10 NFL draft prospect at his position by Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, can help the Huskies control the time of possession and keep the Buckeyes offense off the field. If Washington jumps out to a lead and Ohio State is forced to pass to get back in the game, that could play into the playmaking Huskies secondary’s hands.

While Ohio State (11-1) is ranked sixth in the country and boasts a powerful offense, an upset isn’t out of the question if the Buckeyes and Huskies square off.

What’s Next

Washington will participate in the 2019 Rose Bowl on Tuesday, January 1, at 5 p.m. ET in Pasadena, California. Right now, the Huskies’ opponent is undecided, although they will be playing a Big Ten school.

No. 6 Ohio State and No. 21 Northwestern face off in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, with the winner poised for a Rose Bowl bid.

However, OSU still has a chance at the College Football Playoff. If the Buckeyes win and are chosen as one of the FBS’ top four teams by the selection committee, then the Big Ten’s next-highest-ranked team should get the Rose Bowl berth. Right now, Michigan is that team at No. 7.

Utah’s bowl and opponent will be revealed Sunday.

Where to Watch: College football games and related coverage are available through fuboTV.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced the release of running back Kareem Hunt on Friday after TMZ Sports posted a video of Hunt in a physical altercation with a 19-year-old woman at a Cleveland hotel in February.

His release came shortly after the NFL announced Hunt was placed on the commissioner exempt list.

In February, Courtney Astolfi of Cleveland.com reported two police reports were filed following the altercation with Hunt listed as the suspect on one and Abigail Ottinger, the 19-year-old woman shoved and kicked in the security footage, listed as the suspect on the other.

No charges were filed in the case. Friday marked the first time the video was made publicly available.

Hunt said in August he “learned” from his offseason—which also included allegedly punching a man in the face at an Ohio resort in June—and remained “focused on football.”

“Just be in the right place at the right time,” he told reporters. “I’m going to keep thinking about football and go out there and do my job.”

Following his release, Hunt issued a statement which was relayed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport: “I want to apologize for my actions. I deeply regret what I did. I hope to move on from this.”

Hunt appeared in each of the Chiefs’ first 11 games of the 2018 regular season. He tallied 1,202 yards from scrimmage and 14 total touchdowns.

Troye Sivan Lived His ‘Worst Nightmare’ in Boy Erased

Troye Sivan‘s music career has been quickly heating up, with the artist clocking the release of his second album, Bloom, headlining a tour, releasing collabs with Ariana Grande and Charli XCX, and recording a Queen cover this year alone. But one thing convinced him to (briefly) hit pause on that passion to return to another: Boy Erased.

Sivan had been “waiting for the film that ticked all of the boxes,” he told The Hollywood Reporter, and upon reading the script about surviving gay conversion therapy, “it was immediately clear to me that this was the thing that I wanted to do.”

In the movie, Sivan plays Gary, who befriends main character Jared (Lucas Hedges) when they join the same conversion program. The story sparked memories from his own coming-out and inspired him to audition. “[That] was my worst nightmare before I came out, that my parents were not going to accept me and they’d want to fix me,” Sivan said. “Many people are not as lucky as I’ve been in regard to family and friends being supportive, so any opportunity I can get to help change that, I’ll jump at it.”

For Sivan, knowing that these programs are still legal in most of the country and seeing the LGBTQ community’s rights constantly in question has only added to the urgency of the film. Fortunately, he’s already felt the positive impact the movie has made. “We’re hearing people’s stories and hearing people sharing their past [experiences] with conversion therapy or if they’re in a tough spot with their family,” he said. “The movie is serving a purpose in real life.”

For a project he felt this passionately about, Sivan wanted to contribute as much as possible, so he “pushed, and pushed, and pushed” to write an original song for the film, he previously told MTV News correspondent Josh Horowitz. “Basically, from day one on the set I was, like, on this campaign in my head to get some music in the movie.”

Without any official go-ahead, the “My, My, My” hitmaker started sending songs to director Joel Edgerton and inviting himself to music meetings until eventually, his beautifully haunting ballad with Jónsi, “Revelation,” was born.

Watch Sivan talk about the song below.
