UN rejects US-drafted resolution to condemn Hamas

The United Nations General Assembly has rejected a United States-sponsored resolution seeking to condemn Hamas, the Palestinian group administering the besieged Gaza Strip.

The resolution, which was backed strongly by Israel, needed a two-thirds majority to pass on Thursday following an earlier vote in the assembly.

The proposal failed to cross the threshold, with 87 nations voting in favour and 57 voting against. Thirty-three countries abstained.

The earlier vote to require a two-thirds majority, which followed a procedural move requested by Kuwait, was much closer: 75-72, with 26 abstentions.

Hamas thanks UN member states

The resolution was one of US ambassador to the UN envoy Nikki Haley’s final acts in the international body before she leaves her post at the end of the year.

The outgoing envoy, a staunch defender of Israel, had written to member states on Monday to urge them to vote for the US-drafted text, warning them: “The United States takes the outcome of this vote very seriously.”

“Before the General Assembly can credibly advocate compromise and reconciliation between the Palestinians and Israel, it must on record, unambiguously and unconditionally, condemn Hamas terrorism,” Haley told the body before the vote.

In an official statement, Hamas thanked UN member states “that stood by our people’s resistance and the justice of their cause” and attacked Haley who it said “is known for her extremism and her positions that support the Zionist terrorism in Palestine”.

Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank, also welcomed the resolution’s defeat saying: “The Palestinian presidency will not allow for the condemnation of the national Palestinian struggle.”

Ali Abunimah, co-founder of Electronic Intifada, an independent online news publication, said the failure of the proposal was significant.

“This resolution was really just an attempt to weaponise the UN against the Palestinian people, against their legitimate rights,” he told Al Jazeera.

“The resolution itself was just transparently Israeli talking points – it didn’t mention the military occupation, the siege of Gaza, Israel’s daily attacks against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. I think the world saw through it and they rightly rejected it.”

Crippling blockade

The Gaza Strip, home to two million Palestinians, has been under a crippling Israeli blockade for more than a decade.

In 2006, Hamas beat Fatah in parliamentary elections in the Gaza Strip and, a year later, fighting between the rival factions broke out.

When Hamas eventually took control, Israel responded by enforcing a land, sea and air blockade on Gaza and banning its residents from working in Israel.

Egypt followed suit, effectively sealing the Strip – often described as the world’s largest prison – from the outside world.

Gaza’s continued isolation has devastated its economy, impoverished its population and left 60 percent without jobs, adequate electricity and health services.

BioWare’s new ‘Anthem’ trailer finally dishes on story details: Watch

Initial hype for BioWare’s answer to Destiny, the upcoming online multiplayer Anthem, was pretty tepid. It looked like every other cookie cutter never-ending co-op shooty game, a genre quickly becoming oversaturated.

But now the newly released 2018 Game Awards trailer has revealed more about Anthem‘s story. And it’s clear the studio behind Mass Effect is distinguishing its game by focusing on what they do best: telling engaging narratives.

Most notably, the trailer revealed the game’s main villain, the Monitor.

Giving off very Darth Vader meets Thanos vibes, the Monitor believes he can harness the chaotic power of the mysterious Anthem force — for good, he claims. But ending the needless suffering of the world will require authoritarian control.

Hmm, sounds familiar, buddy. And it doesn’t usually work out that way.

Trump picks State Department spokeswoman for top U.N. post

Heather Nauert

Heather Nauert’s apparent appointment came as something of a surprise, as people close to the situation had previously said the former Fox News anchor had fallen out of contention after emerging as an early favorite. | Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images

White House

Heather Nauert, a former Fox News host, has been chosen to replace Nikki Haley, according to two sources.

President Donald Trump has tapped State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, two people familiar with the matter said on Thursday night.

Trump chose the former Fox News anchor to replace Nikki Haley, who is leaving her post at the end of the month, according to a senior administration official and another person familiar with the choice.

Story Continued Below

Nauert’s apparent selection came as something of a surprise, since people close to the situation had previously said Nauert had fallen out of contention for the post after emerging as an early favorite.

And only last week, John James, a potential Republican rising star who just lost his U.S. Senate bid in Michigan, was being described inside the White House as a serious contender. But in recent days, James’ chances fizzled, felled by a lack of foreign policy chops.

James, a West Point graduate and combat veteran, is scheduled to meet with Trump next week to discuss other opportunities to serve in the administration, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

Bloomberg was the first to report on Trump’s choosing Nauert. If officially nominated, she will have prevailed over a number of candidates with more foreign policy credentials. Others who have been floated for the U.N. post before falling away include the ambassador to France, Jamie McCourt; the ambassador to Germany, Ric Grenell; the ambassador to Canada, Kelly Knight Craft; NATO Ambassador Kay Bailey Hutchison; and former White House deputy national security adviser Dina Powell.

Each contender has faded for various reasons. James was seen as lacking the necessary foreign policy acumen; Powell, who left the West Wing in January, decided to stay put at Goldman Sachs at her colleagues’ urging; Trump said Grenell was performing too well in his current role to be reassigned; and Craft and McCourt never fully captured the president’s attention.

Trump even suggested early on that his daughter Ivanka, who surprised the diplomatic world when she briefly sat in for her father at a G-20 summit last July, would be an “incredible” choice for the U.N. job. But the younger Trump later made it clear in a tweet that she was not under active consideration for the position.

Multiple other factors made the search for a new U.N. ambassador even more challenging, including an internal debate over whether the position should remain as a Cabinet position or be downgraded so the next ambassador reports directly to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

While some foreign policy experts say the shift could help the administration better coordinate foreign policy, it has likely made the position less desirable to big-name recruits.

Having the U.N. ambassador in the Cabinet “creates an odd configuration,” said Matthew Waxman, who held several senior national security jobs in the George W. Bush administration.

It makes the position-holder an “independent adviser on foreign policy to the president,” he added, which has advantages but can generate challenges. “We generally want our U.N. ambassador and our U.N. Embassy implementing policy that is set, coordinated or developed by the State Department.”

It’s unclear whether Nauert’s appointment would mean the position has been downgraded.

White House national security adviser John Bolton, who was himself ambassador to the U.N. during the George W. Bush administration, also asserted himself in the decision-making process, according to two Republicans close to the White House. Bolton, they said, wanted to ensure the nominee has the requisite foreign policy chops. When Bolton took the U.N. job, he was working as a top State Department official and had previously done stints at the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Justice Department.

A spokesperson for the National Security Council did not respond to a request for comment about Bolton’s involvement in the search process.

Haley, a former South Carolina governor whose next move remains unclear, plans to stay in New York until her 17-year-old son finishes high school. She has not said publicly whether she has a preferred candidate for the U.N. job.

Lakers Rumors: LeBron James Wants Carmelo Anthony to Join LA

LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 20: LeBron James #23 of the Los Angeles Lakers and Carmelo Anthony #7 of the Houston Rockets wait for and inbound at Staples Center on October 20, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Harry How/Getty Images

LeBron James is interested in making his good friend Carmelo Anthony a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, according to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon.

Per Vardon, James believes Anthony could help a young Lakers roster that has dealt with a number of injuries already this season. Point guard Rajon Rondo (hand) and forward Brandon Ingram (ankle) are both currently sidelined.

According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, the Lakers may have interest in Anthony after the Michael Beasley signing has not worked out.

As for Anthony, the 10-time All-Star has been out of action for nearly a month, last appearing in a game back on Nov. 8. He spent the offseason on the move, being traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Atlanta Hawks before ultimately being bought out. In the end, he wound up signing with the Houston Rockets for the veteran’s minimum of $2.4 million. He also accepted a bench role for the first time in his career.

However, his time in Houston did not go as hoped.

Anthony averaged 13.4 points on 40.5 percent shooting and 5.4 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game. While those are respectable numbers, the Rockets got off to just a 4-6 start after winning an NBA-best 65 games a season ago. Ultimately, the team decided to end the experiment after just 10 games.

In the meantime, the two sides have been looking for a potential landing spot for the 16-year veteran.

Before signing with Houston, Anthony had drawn interest from the Lakers and the Miami Heat. When news of Anthony’s stint of the Rockets coming to an end broke, though, James said he had “no idea” if his team would make a run at his buddy.

James and Anthony have a relationship that dates back to their high school days, and they both entered the league together in 2003.

As the two stars previously revealed to Bleacher Report’s Howard Beck, James, Anthony and Dwyane Wade had once discussed entering free agency together in 2010…and then Anthony signed a five-year deal in 2006 that threw a wrench in the plans. With that, the Big 3 wound up being James, Wade and Chris Bosh, not Anthony, in the summer of 2010.

James has teamed up with Wade in both Miami and Cleveland, but he has not been able to link up with either of the other two Banana Boat members, Anthony and Chris Paul. But he made it clear he would welcome playing with both players.

“I really hope that, before our career is over, we can all play together,” James told Beck. “At least one, maybe one or two seasons—me, Melo, D-Wade, CP—we can get a year in. I would actually take a pay cut to do that.”

Well, Wade is retiring after this season, and Paul signed a four-year deal with the Rockets this past summer. A Banana Boat squad may not be in the cards, but James and Anthony may have the opportunity to team up for the first time in their NBA careers.

Anthony, however, can’t be traded until Dec. 15 as the result of signing as a free agent during the offseason. If the Rockets waive him, the Lakers would need to have an open spot on the roster.

13 Biggest Snubs And Surprises From The 2019 Golden Globe Nominations

HBO/Fox Searchlight/Netflix

The 2019 Golden Globe nominations are here, and as such, there’s plenty to be simultaneously upset and overjoyed about. When it comes to awards season, there’s always an emotional give and take — but at least the Golden Globes are the show with the open bar, so that always helps numb the pain.

When it comes to TV, we know the Hollywood Foreign Press Association love to champion new shows and emerging talent — but this year felt a little too safe. Meanwhile, the nominees in the film categories felt all over the place, in a good way. (Except if you’re Ethan Hawke.) Let’s take a look at some of the biggest snubs and surprises from this year’s nominees.

  1. SNUB: Ethan Hawke, First Reformed

Where the rest of the entertainment industry zigs, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association zags — and nowhere was that more apparent than the Best Actor, Drama category. Ethan Hawke’s simmering performance in First Reformed has been garnering attention all season long with key wins at this year’s Gotham Awards and New York Film Critics Circle. So naturally, the HFPA wants to stay as far away from predictable as humanly possible. Assuming that Hawke’s still got momentum come the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Independent Spirit Awards early next year, he’ll still be the Oscar frontrunner come February. — Crystal Bell

  2. SNUB: Nicholas Hoult, The Favourite

I’m sorry, but does Sam Rockwell really need more attention for playing morally dubious men? There were so many snubs in the Supporting Actor category, it’s hard to know where to begin, but there’s something so deliciously wicked about Nicholas Hoult’s madcap performance in The Favourite — a film that did receive nominations for its deserving female stars: Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz. It’s the kind of scene-stealing performance that the HFPA would usually be all over. (Plus, Hoult is British! They love Brits!) It’s the best Hoult has ever been, and it’s a shame he wasn’t recognized for it. — C.B.

  3. SURPRISE: Billy Porter and Pose

Billy Porter, you better werk. The beloved Tony winner is the heart and soul of Ryan Murphy’s FX drama about ballroom culture in 1980s New York, so it’s only right that his standout performance was recognized by HFPA. But that didn’t make it any less surprising when it actually happened. The HFPA love to be first, and Pose did miss the eligibility deadline for the Emmys — so of course these foreign critics would want to be the first to honor such a wonderful, groundbreaking show. While I would have loved to see MJ Rodriguez score a nomination for her tender lead performance, the show itself did land a Best Drama nom alongside The Americans and Killing Eve. And you know that cast is going to slay the red carpet. — C.B.

  4. SURPRISE: First Man doesn’t land much of anything

This is why it’s never a good look to start speculating Oscar chances too early. When news of Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic starring Ryan Gosling hit the trades in 2017, critics were quick to paint it as the young director’s next Oscar contender. But with good, not great reviews and little to no fanfare, it looks like First Man‘s Oscar chances are dwindling. Claire Foy’s nom for Best Supporting Actress could give her momentum come February, but Chazelle — an HFPA and Academy favorite — probably won’t be so lucky, no matter how stunning that last act is. But with one Academy Award already under his best, the 33-year-old director is going to be just fine.

  5. SNUB: Emma Stone

Emma Stone was rightfully nominated on the film side for her hilarious supporting role in The Favorite, but she failed to secure the same recognition on the TV side for Netflix’s Maniac. Shockingly, the highly stylized Cary Joji Fukunaga series was completely shut out from the nominees list, despite the critical buzz the show received (and the excitement surrounding Stone’s reunion with her Superbad love, Jonah Hill!). Did the HFPA think one nod was enough for the actress, or did they just love The Favorite so much that they totally forgot about her equally impressive Maniac performance? — Alissa Schulman

  6. SURPRISE / SNUB: This Is Us

Wow, wow, wow. The show that secured a total of six nominations over its first two seasons — including two for Best TV Drama and an historical Best TV Actor win last year for Sterling K. Brown — was completely passed over in its third season. The hit NBC show introduced a completely new timeline this past season, giving audiences exactly what we wanted with a deep-dive into Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) past. Emotional family-driven storylines have continued to move audiences, but apparently the HFPA has no tears left to cry for the Pearson family. — A.S.

  7. SNUB: Issa Rae

Issa Rae, the creator-writer-star of HBO’s Insecure, has already said she measures her show’s success not on awards but on its cultural relevancy. “I want to be a pop-culture staple,” she said in 2017. And there’s no other show on television that inspires the kind of fanfare as Insecure. Still, it would have been nice to see Rae get her due with a much-deserved Golden Globe nomination. But as much as the HFPA love the exciting, shiny new stars, they just as quickly dispose of them to focus on the Next Big Thing. — C.B.

  8. SNUB: Sam Elliott, A Star Is Born

There was no shortage of recognition for awards season heavy-hitter A Star Is Born, with a stunning five nominations, including Best Picture — Drama, Best Actress for Lady Gaga, and Best Actor and Best Director for Bradley Cooper, but Jackson Maine’s brother and manager Bobby — the original wind beneath his wings and fierce reminder of his ghostly dreams — went completely unnoticed. This is, sadly, not a total surprise for Sam Elliott, a highly recognizable Hollywood veteran who has only secured a total of two Golden Globe noms and zero wins over the course of his five-decade film career. — A.S.

  9. SURPRISE: Bodyguard

Richard Madden couldn’t snag a bottle of water at the Netflix offices [LINK: https://ift.tt/2RAdx0l%5D, but he could help the company snag two Golden Globe noms for Bodyguard. The twisty drama is up for both Best TV Series and Best TV Actor for the Game of Thrones alum, a pleasant surprise for fans of the show — which was record-shatteringly huge in the U.K. — and now a must-see for those who haven’t yet dove into the show about a PTSD-afflicted veteran-turned-bodyguard for a Home Secretary threatened by a terrorist plan. Add it to your Christmas binge list. — A.S.

  10. SURPRISE: No love for Saoirse, Margot, and Mary, Queen of Scots

What happens when two awards season darlings come together for a rich historical drama? Absolutely nothing, apparently. The HFPA declined to offer any accolades to the Saoirse Ronan/Margot Robbie-led drama, which also happened to be directed by a woman. (Although perhaps the female direction was this film’s downfall; the HFPA also once again declined to recognize any non-male directors this year.) Ronan and Robbie were both nominated for Best Movie Actress — Musical or Comedy last year, with the Lady Bird actress taking home the statuette, so it seemed like the HFPA would be totally into this powerhouse team-up. Hopefully it’ll be more to the Academy’s liking. — A.S.

  11. SNUB: Succession

There was no other show on television this year as fun as HBO’s Succession, and maybe that was part of its problem. It’s a societal satire wrapped up in a broody, family drama — if your family had billions of dollars, routinely stabbed each other in the backs, and snorted cocaine. It honestly should have been submitted to the comedy category! Outside of Kieran Culkin, who scored a nom for Best Supporting Actor, the summer phenomenon was completely shut out. On one hand, Succession seems like the kind of batshit-crazy show that HFPA would dig — and it missed the eligibility window for the Emmys — but on the other, maybe Succession is just a victim of Peak TV. With so many new shows premiering every month, it’s that much harder for an enjoyable show like Succession to rise to the top. Not to mention, it was so nice to see The Americans finally get recognized. — C.B.

  12. SNUB: Widows

I blame this more on the Fox marketing department than I do the HFPA, but the point still stands: Justice for Widows. How do you put Viola Davis in a thrilling, female-led heist movie, open the film with a full-tongue make-out between her and Liam Neeson, dress her in the most incredible clothes, hand her a gun, and not give her a damn Golden Globe nomination? Davis and Elizabeth Debicki deserved noms for that final scene alone! Maybe the HFPA didn’t understand it, or maybe they have no taste — either way, Widows deserved more. — C.B.

  13. SURPRISE: So… does this mean we have to see Vice?

Timing is everything, and if there ever was a perfect time for a closer look into our country’s politics (aside from, you know, literally always), it’s now. Perhaps that’s why Vice, a movie about that guy who once accidentally shot a human in the face during a quail hunt — and also was our Vice President — received the highest number of Golden Globe nominations of any movie or TV show this year with a whopping six honors in all the major categories. The heavy-hitter, competing on the Musical or Comedy side, is up for Best Picture, Actor for Christian Bale, Actress for Amy Adams, Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell, and both Director and Screenplay for Adam McKay. No one is misunderestimating this film. Unfortunately, this one doesn’t hit theaters until December 25, so we still have a few more weeks to go before we can witness Bale’s incredible transformation into Dick Cheney and hear Rockwell’s George W. Bush-inspired drawl. — A.S.

Musk’s underground LA tunnel opening postponed

The Hawthorne tunnel public debut got pushed back a week.
The Hawthorne tunnel public debut got pushed back a week.

Image: the boring company

2016%2f10%2f18%2f6f%2f2016101865slbw.6b8ca.6b5d9By Sasha Lekach

Long criticized for his time management skills, billionaire inventor Elon Musk is once again behind schedule on a major project.

This time it’s the underground Hawthorne test tunnel for The Boring Company’s high-speed transit system underneath Los Angeles. A big public opening experience was scheduled for Tuesday, but a company spokesperson emailed over a new date set for Dec. 18.

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk’s neighbors scuttled plans for his West LA tunnel

Musk tweeted about the delay, expertly spinning it as an improved event that just needs a bit more attention and time to pull off. He promised “more than a tunnel opening” with autonomous transport cars and car elevators. Maybe something like the elevator approved for under a Hawthorne home the company purchased? Guess we’ll find out later this month.

Boring Company product launch on Dec 18. More than a tunnel opening. Will include modded but fully road legal autonomous transport cars & ground to tunnel car elevators.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 7, 2018

As a 2016 Gizmodo article succinctly (and still accurately) states, “Elon Musk is always late.” As The Boring Company is another Musk brainchild, it makes sense that the delayed pattern carries over.

The Hawthorne tunnel project website still lists Dec. 10 as the completion date for the first section of the 2-mile tunnel, and that may be the case. But it’s the public debut that Musk promised that is getting pushed back.

Opening event that night & free rides for the public next day

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 22, 2018

Back in October, Musk promised free rides for next week after an opening party the night before. Those looking for a free ride will need to clear out their schedules — this may take a while.
