The internet is not having the new portion recommendation for fries, it’s pretty bleak

Ryan Sedmak

A professor out of Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health says that people should only be consuming 6 fries per serving…yes, 6.

Of course, the internet had something to say about it. Still, studies have shown a connection to eating fries and obesity…so it is something to be considered, to an extent.

Heisman Candidate Kyler Murray Would Like to Play Both Football and Baseball

Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman Trophy favorite Kyler Murray, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in June, says he’d like to try to go pro in both baseball and football:

Andy Staples @Andy_Staples

Kyler Murray: “I’d like to do both [football and baseball] if possible. But I don’t know how possible that is.”

The 21-year-old accounted for 51 total touchdowns, a 70.9 percent completion rate and 892 rushing yards while leading OU to a 12-1 record, Big 12 title and an upcoming College Football Playoff date with No. 1 Alabama on Saturday, December 29.

A rising baseball star, Murray found success for the Sooners baseball team last year with 10 home runs, 47 RBI and a .954 OPS in 189 at-bats.

The A’s drafted Murray ninth overall in the 2018 draft, and the plan then was to play one year of football at OU before moving on to pro baseball.

However, that was before Murray exploded on the college football landscape, and there have been signs Murray is changing his mind about a pro football career.

In an interview with Tim Tebow on ESPN’s College GameDay (h/t Julian McWilliams of The Athletic) on Saturday, December 1, Murray revealed that a pro football career was under consideration. Sportsbooks are even taking bets on whether Murray will be picked in the NFL draft and play pro football and baseball in 2019, per OddsShark.

It would be fascinating to watch Murray try both, but regardless of his eventual decision, the football/baseball star has a chance to be one of America’s most entertaining athletes in future years.

Charlottesville: James Alex Fields guilty of first-degree murder

A Virginia jury on Friday convicted James Alex Fields Jr of first-degree murder in the death of Heather Heyer at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.

During the incident, Fields slammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing 32-year-old Heyer and injuring dozens more.

Earlier in the day, Fields was photographed marching with Vanguard America, a neo-Nazi group, during the rally. Throughout the day, rally participants clashed with community members, anti-racists and anti-fascists across the city.

Unite the Right, called to oppose Charlottesville’s decision to remove a Confederate statue, was the largest white nationalist rally in the US in recent decades.

The rally brought out thousands of supporters of the alt-right, a loosely-knit coalition of white supremacists, white nationalists and neo-Nazis.

See How Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes, And More Are Basking In Their Golden Grammy Nods

Getty Images

Ahh… the sweet sound of a Grammy nomination.

The nominees for the 2019 awards show were announced on Friday (December 7), and the Grammys did indeed “step up” by recognizing more women and more hip-hop artists in the major categories. Needless to say, it’s an exciting day for many of your fave artists, who promptly took to social media to bask in the golden glow of a Grammy nod (or two or three or more).

Demi Lovato, who’s been keeping a low profile since her overdose this summer, took to Twitter for the first time since July to react to her nomination for Best Pop/Duo Group Performance for her Christina Aguilera collaboration, “Fall in Line.” “Woke up filled with hope. Dreams come true y’all… thank you @xtina. I love you so much,” she wrote, later adding, “This is so surreal.” Aguilera graciously responded, saying, “You deserve it all and getting to work with you was its own award for me @ddlovato. There’s no one I’d rather share this with!!”

First-time nominee Shawn Mendes was equally flustered upon hearing that his self-titled third LP is up for Best Pop Vocal Album, while “In My Blood” is a contender for Song of the Year. “Unbelievable, speechless right now. I LOVE YOU,” he tweeted after sharing an Instagram video of his real-time reaction. His buddy Niall Horan even chimed in for a congratulatory message, writing, “My guy @ShawnMendes got 2 Grammy nominations!!! Fuck yeahhhhh!”

And in one of the morning’s most emotional reactions, Janelle Monáe — who helped present the nominations on CBS — was on the verge of tears upon hearing that Dirty Computer earned a nod for Album of the Year. “This album is so much bigger than me. It’s about a community of marginalized voices. … I’m happy to be representing them,” she said on the air. It was a genuinely powerful moment, and a testament to how meaningful a Grammy nomination can be to an artist.

Trump called Tillerson ‘dumb as a rock’ and ‘lazy as hell’

Remember Rex Tillerson, Trump’s largely accomplishment-free Secretary of State?

Well he’s back, this time with some long overdue criticism of our Commander in Chief.

On Thursday, Tillerson spoke at a fundraiser for for the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The former Secretary of State “let loose,” as much as that limestone rock of a man can be loose about anything.

“When the President would say, ‘Here’s what I want to do and here’s how I want to do it.’ And I’d have to say to him, ‘Well Mr. President, I understand what you want to do, but you can’t do it that way. It violates the law. It violates treaty,’” Tillerson said.

Tillerson also complained that it was challenging to move from a “disciplined, highly-process oriented” corporation to work for Trump, “who is pretty undisciplined, doesn’t like to read, doesn’t read briefing reports, doesn’t like to get into the details of a lot of things.”

In the past, it was rumored that Tillerson once called Trump a “moron.”

Here’s what our normal, mature President had to say in response:

Mike Pompeo is doing a great job, I am very proud of him. His predecessor, Rex Tillerson, didn’t have the mental capacity needed. He was dumb as a rock and I couldn’t get rid of him fast enough. He was lazy as hell. Now it is a whole new ballgame, great spirit at State!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 7, 2018

Yes, the president called Tillerson “dumb as a rock” and “lazy as hell.”

And here’s how Twitter responded:

Why did the President hire someone dumb as a rock? Asking for a friend.

— (((Harry Enten))) (@ForecasterEnten) December 7, 2018

people who live in White Houses shouldn’t throw dumb as a rocks

— Clara Jeffery (@ClaraJeffery) December 7, 2018

“dumb as a rock…lazy as hell” would be a great twitter bio. kinda jealous of rex tbh

— Tierney Sneed (@Tierney_Megan) December 7, 2018

“Looked up ‘Tea for the Tillerson’, realized somebody had already said it, felt disappointed.” <— What Twitter has done to me.

— Emily Nussbaum (@emilynussbaum) December 7, 2018

PROTECT REX TILLERSON!!! TRUMP REPLIERS ASSEMBLE!!!

— Patrick Monahan (@pattymo) December 7, 2018

Rex Tillerson was “lazy as hell,” says man who used a motorcade to travel 250 yards earlier this week #MAGA

— Mike (@MKChiWriting) December 7, 2018

so you’re saying not only do you hire people who are lazy and dumb as a rock you then just let them hang around after discovering this https://t.co/sfSOAKgYN7

— Kilgore Trout (@KT_So_It_Goes) December 7, 2018

One person, however, said it better than any of us:

It is possible that Trump and Tillerson are both correct.

— Michael Grunwald (@MikeGrunwald) December 7, 2018

At least Twitter isn’t as dumb as a rock today.

Owner Mark Lerner Doesn’t Expect Bryce Harper to Sign Contract with Nationals

DENVER, CO - SEPTEMBER 30: Bryce Harper #34 of the Washington Nationals runs out a fourth inning double against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on September 30, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty Images)

Washington Nationals managing principal owner Mark Lerner said Friday he doesn’t expect superstar free agent Bryce Harper to re-sign with the organization.

Lerner told Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier of 106.7 The Fan that the Nats presented the outfielder with their best offer in September and have since shifted their focus elsewhere.

“But I really don’t expect him to come back at this point,” he said. “I think they’ve decided to move on. There’s just too much money out there that he’d be leaving on the table. That’s just not [agent] Mr. [Scott] Boras’ MO to leave money on the table.”

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported the Nationals’ offer to Harper included an annual base salary around $30 million as part of a long-term extension proposal.

Lerner didn’t confirm the amount, but he told Paulsen and Rouhier the club made it clear to the outfielder’s representation they wouldn’t be interested in joining an offseason bidding war.

“Well, when we met with them and we gave them the offer, we told them, ‘This is the best we can do.’ We went right to the finish line very quickly,” Lerner said. “And we said, ‘If this is of interest to you, please come back to us and we’ll see whether we can finish it up.’”

He added it’s now a “strong possibility” the Nats wouldn’t be able to make a deal work even if Boras came back with interest in the original offer because of their other moves.

Washington signed starting pitcher Patrick Corbin to a six-year, $140 million contract (via Jamal Collier of MLB.com) while acquiring two relief pitchers, Kyle Barraclough and Trevor Rosenthal, and two catchers, Kurt Suzuki and Yan Gomes, via trades and free agency.

General manager Mike Rizzo previously said he felt the blockbuster Corbin signing was “independent” of the Harper situation and wouldn’t rule out a reunion, per Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.

If the Nats don’t add another outfielder, top prospect Victor Robles will likely join Adam Eaton and Juan Soto in the Nationals outfield to open the 2019 season.

Meanwhile, Tim Brown and Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported officials from the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies were among the “upward of a dozen teams” to meet with Harper or make plans to do so during free agency.

US wants Huawei executive ‘to face charges over Iran sanctions’

A top Chinese telecommunications executive facing possible extradition to the United States appeared in court Friday as she sought bail in a case that has rattled markets and raised doubts about the US being able to reach a truce in its trade war with China.

A prosecutor for the Canadian government urged the court not to grant bail, saying the charges against Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer (CFO) for Chinese telecom giant Huawei, involve US allegations that Huawei used a sham shell company to access the Iran market in dealings that contravene US sanctions.

Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1 while transferring planes on a trip from Hong Kong to Mexico at the request of US authorities seeking her extradition. The arrest was made public on Wednesday.

If convicted, the 46-year-old daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei faces more than 30 years in prison, said the Canadian prosecutor.

The prosecutor said Meng had personally denied to US bankers any direct connections between Huawei and SkyCom, when in fact “SkyCom is Huawei”.

Hong Kong-based SkyCom’s alleged sanctions breaches occurred from 2009 to 2014.

The lawyer suggested that Meng has shown a pattern of avoiding the US since becoming aware of the investigation into the matter, has access to vast wealth and connections, and therefore could flee Canada.

Meng’s lawyer, David Martin, disputed the prosecutor’s call to deny bail, saying, “The fact a person has worked hard and has extraordinary resources cannot be a factor that would exclude them from bail.”

He said Meng’s personal integrity would not allow her to go against a court order, and that she would not embarrass her father and company founder by breaching such an order.

US-China trade thaw threatened

The arrest roiled global stock markets over fears the move could escalate the US-China trade war despite a truce between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping last week.

Canada denied that the arrest, which was made public on Wednesday, was politically motivated, while US officials on Thursday said Trump did not know about the arrest in advance.

Earlier on Friday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said neither Canada nor the US provided China any evidence that Meng had broken any law in the two countries, and demanded her release.

In a statement on Wednesday, Huawei said “the company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng”.

Chinese state media slammed Meng’s arrest, accusing the US of trying to “stifle” Huawei and curb its global expansion.

Guy responds to his own wanted mugshot on Facebook and hilarious romance ensues

Ugh, don’t you hate it when the police rush you into turning yourself in?

A Facebook post led to an unexpectedly hilarious exchange between the Richland Police Department and a wanted criminal who was taking his sweet time.

For its weekly “Wanted Wednesday,” the Washington police department posted a mugshot of 38-year-old Anthony Akers, who allegedly violated his probation. He has a history of illegal possession of prescription drugs and resisting arrest, according to the Tri-City Herald.

But Akers, clearly exasperated by the attention, didn’t want to be rushed.

“Calm down, im going to turn myself in,” he commented.

When he didn’t show up, the Richland Police Department tried reaching out again. They even offered him a ride to the station.

Akers said he needed to tie up “a couple loose ends” before his impending incarceration, but assured the police that he would show up in “the next 48 hours.”

On Monday, the police responded with another post, days after Akers promised to turn himself in.

“Dear Anthony, is it us?” the Richland Police Department asked. “We are beginning to think you are not coming.”

When he didn’t show over the weekend, Akers wrote a heartfelt apology for standing up the police. Here’s his tongue-in-cheek note admitting his “commitment issues.”

Dear RPD, its not you, its me. I obviously have commitment issues. I apologize for standing you up, but let me make it up to you. I will be there no later then lunchtime tomorrow, I know you have no reason to believe me after what i did to you, but I promise that if i dont make it on my own by lunchtime tomorrow I will call for a ride to assist me with my commitment issues. Thank you in advance to your response if you are patiently giving me another chance with us, I know i dont deserve it.

P.S. You’re beautful😙

After nearly a week of ghosting, empty promises, and leading them on, Akers finally turned himself in. He replied to the Richland Police Department’s post with a cheeky selfie captioned, “Here for our date sweetheart.”

Love, Actually who? Watch this romance blossom over Facebook instead.

Elon Musk says he doesn’t know how to smoke pot, and we believe him

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took a puff off a joint three months ago and people are still talking about it.

In a preview Friday for an upcoming 60 Minutes interview with Lesley Stahl, Musk defends his brush with marijuana.

“I am somewhat impulsive and don’t want to adhere to some CEO template,” he says. When she grills him on the pot, he replies, “I do not smoke pot. As anyone who watched that podcast can tell I have no idea how to smoke pot, or anything.”

SEE ALSO: OK, everybody: Stop pot-shaming Elon Musk

It’s pretty evident from footage of Joe Rogan’s podcast that Musk didn’t inhale and didn’t really know what he was doing, but it hasn’t stopped everyone from Fox News to NASA from making the smoking incident into a huge deal.

The clip was taken down from the 60 Minutes YouTube channel after about an hour and replaced with a different clip (above) about Musk’s next move amid recent GM car plant closures.

But don’t despair. A CNBC segment captured the one-minute clip where Musk talks about his weed ineptitude and called Twitter a “war zone.”

The full interview airs Sunday on 60 Minutes on CBS at 7 p.m. local time.
