This Is Not What The Minnesota Vikings Paid For

The Minnesota Vikings offense is awful under the supervision of John DeFilippo, and quarterback Kirk Cousins hasn’t played anywhere near a level to validate his three-year, fully guaranteed $84 million contract.

DeFilippo and Cousins both fooled the Vikings organization.

General manager Rick Spielman discussed the hiring of DeFilippo with NFL Network in March, via Terry Horstman of USA Today‘s Vikings Wire:

“The number one thing we wanted to do was get the offensive coordinator hired first. So when we were able to hire John DeFilippo, we sat down as a scouting staff, as a coaching staff and listened to what he’s going to do from an offensive scheme standpoint and evaluated all the quarterbacks on our roster and felt very good about the guys we had on our roster. We just felt that Kirk was such a unique opportunity that rarely comes out, especially at that position. He’s a young quarterback that’s been healthy, that’s been productive in this league.”

DeFilippo hasn’t transitioned well from being the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach to Minnesota’s offensive coordinator, and being healthy and productive doesn’t automatically make someone an elite quarterback.

Minnesota entered the offseason thinking it was only one pivotal piece away from legitimate Super Bowl contention after last year’s 13-3 regular-season effort and a loss to Philly in the NFC Championship Game.

The team supposedly made it that far in spite of its previous starter Case Keenum, not because of him.

Monday night’s 21-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field exposed the flawed Vikings offense, which has fallen to 18th in scoring at 22.9 points per game (eight spots lower than in 2017). Forget the late touchdown. A garbage-time score means the team was shut out for nearly 60 minutes.

Cousins signed with Minnesota without the resume to back up his expected status. The team overlooked one simple thing through the free-agent process: Cousins has never been a top-end starter. He is a slightly above-average single-caller who leveraged his situation in Washington like Bobby Axelrod from Showtime’s Billions in order to maximize profit.

CBS Sports HQ @CBSSportsHQ

With the Vikings’ loss to Seattle, Kirk Cousins’ career record vs. teams above .500 falls to 4-24 https://t.co/4Yvc9LWKwN

The 30-year-old is what he’s always been: A distributor who plays well within an offense’s structure yet fails to elevate the play of those around him or extend an offense beyond its natural setup.

Three straight 4,000-yard campaigns somehow marked him as one of the best free agents in NFL history. Why? Because he’s in his prime, and organizations typically don’t let quality quarterbacks hit the open market. Yet the entire process became overblown.

Cousins is a solid quarterback, but he’s not a franchise-changer. This became obvious when he was placed in a poorly constructed offense with a subpar play-caller. Monday’s performance is a microcosm of bigger issues.

DeFilippo came under fire in recent weeks when head coach Mike Zimmer called his offensive approach into question.

Bruce Kluckhohn/Associated Press

“Same thing I have been saying all year [about wanting to run the ball more],” Zimmer said after a 24-10 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 13, per the Minneapolis Star Tribune‘s Andrew Krammer

An understanding of situational football is important, but the Vikings have talented backs in Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray. And they are not properly using either. The pair combined for 29 carries over the last two contests, and the Vikings scored 17 total points against the Patriots and Seahawks.

A balanced offense isn’t necessary to be successful. Not a single team operates at a 50-50 run-pass ratio. The ability to recognize pre-snap reads is what places the offense in a position to maximize effectiveness. In Minnesota’s case, staying ahead of the chains on early downs would have a profound effect.

DeFilippo discussed Zimmer’s desire to run the ball more prior to Monday’s contest, per Fox Sports North:

“I went back and self-scouted myself. There were two or three instances where we threw the football [against the Patriots], like on that first-and-10 from around the 26, that we probably should’ve run the football. I made that aware to him [Coach Zimmer] and my thoughts on that. It’s just like anybody, I look to go out each week and improve myself. You’re always self-evaluating yourself and looking for ways to get better.”

Yet poor sequential play-calling continued. Once the Vikings finally established even a slight hint of rhythm, decision-making led to setbacks. In the third quarter, on 4th-and-1 from the 40-yard line, the Vikings attempted to slam Murray behind the offensive interior, only to be rebuffed because of a stacked box. The play never really had a chance because the Vikings didn’t spread the field. DeFilippo called a heavy formation, which provided the Seahawks with an advantage.

Prior to that point, each of the Vikings’ drives ended in a punt or a turnover. Cousins managed only 55 passing yards through three quarters.

Minnesota missed its lone chance to take the lead after failures by both the coordinator and the quarterback. The Vikings ran the ball twice up the middle against a stout Seahawks front before chasing points on fourth down instead of attempting a field goal. Cousins missed an open Adam Thielen after safety Tedric Thompson slipped in the end zone and instead threw to a doubled Kyle Rudolph. Cousins’ poor ball placement only exacerbated the issue.

Thielen, who finished with five receptions for 70 yards, wasn’t exactly happy.

Stephen Brashear/Associated Press

“It’s been there all f–king day,” ESPN’s mic heard him say after a 35-yard reception, according to CBS Sports’ Will Brinson

Cousins is going to take what’s given to him and nothing more. There’s some value in being able to correctly assess the opening in a defense and exploit it on most occasions. But playing the position is about far more than simple pitch-and-catch. A quarterback needs to create. Cousins doesn’t do this.

He’s already been sacked 10 more times than Keenum last year and crumbles under pressure. He had opportunities to create plays down the field, but he became rattled with pressure around his feet, as NFL Next Gen States noted (h/t ESPN’s Courtney Cronin):

Courtney Cronin @CourtneyRCronin

Cousins went 1-of-7 (14%) when a defender got within 2 yards of him Monday according to NFL Next Gen Stats, his worst mark of the season. Cousins has attempted 161 passes this year with a defender within 2 yards of him, most in the NFL.

Keenum may not be the most physically gifted quarterback, but he’s tough in the pocket with enough mobility to make something out of nothing. This is especially important when playing behind a porous offensive line.

Poor play-calling and Cousins’ lack of playmaking Monday place a searing spotlight on a struggling front five. The team already had issues at guard. Tom Compton was playing poorly on the left side, and Mike Remmer was unable to win at the point of attack on the right. Things could get worse since second-round right tackle Brian O’Neill suffered a leg injury.

The 6-6-1 Vikings still reside in the sixth and final playoff spot with remaining games against the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. How can Minnesota fix its offense over the next three weeks?

“A good question,” Zimmer said, per the St. Paul Pioneer PressChris TomassonIt can’t.

DeFilippo could make his play-calling less predictable by mixing up formations or situations, but that won’t change who Cousins is or magically fix the team’s offensive line problems.

The Vikings took a step back when the organization had to replace Pat Shurmur, who left to coach the New York Giants, and overspent on an overhyped free agent. They’ll continue to pay for both decisions.

They have won championships together, battled each other as opponents and developed into the defining players of one of the best draft classes in NBA history, but LeBron James has something Dwyane Wade never will: bragging rights from their final matchup.

James led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 108-105 victory over Wade’s Miami Heat on Monday at Staples Center in what figures to be the last matchup between the two future Hall of Famers after Wade said he will retire following the 2018-19 season.

Los Angeles has found its stride and is now 6-1 in its last seven and 17-10 overall, while Miami dropped to 11-15 and saw its two-game winning streak end.

James won the game and impressed on an individual level with 28 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds, while Wade countered with 15 points, 10 assists and five boards. Kyle Kuzma added a game-high 33 points for the Lakers, and Justise Winslow spearheaded the Heat with 28 points.

Winslow and Wade each had potential game-tying threes on Miami’s final possession but were unable to deliver with the outcome hanging in the balance.

James and Wade will forever be linked together.

They are the central figures of a 2003 draft class that also included Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, David West, Kirk Hinrich, Boris Diaw, Kyle Korver, Kendrick Perkins and James’ coach, Luke Walton, among others. They won two championships and reached four straight NBA Finals together with the Heat and treated fans to a lengthy list of alley-oops and incredible moments that were featured in tribute videos Monday.

Wade is one of the best shooting guards in NBA history as a three-time champion, NBA Finals MVP, eight-time All-NBA selection, three-time All-Defensive selection and 12-time All-Star.

While James ultimately surpassed him as a three-time champion, four-time MVP, three-time NBA Finals MVP, 14-time All-NBA selection, six-time All-Defensive selection and 14-time All-Star, they are both headed to the Hall of Fame.

It is the fact that James is still arguably the best player in the league in 2018-19 while Wade is coming off the bench in the twilight of his great career that underscores the former’s true greatness.

Yes, James—who turns 34 in December—has the age advantage over the 36-year-old Wade, but that doesn’t account for the fact that the Lakers playmaker led the league in total minutes last season while playing all 82 regular-season games and dragging the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Finals for the fourth straight time.

Those minutes add up, and it was his eighth straight appearance in the NBA Finals.

It was an astounding accomplishment for someone playing in his 15th season, and he has picked up where he left off in his 16th by averaging 28.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.9 assists in his first 26 games with the Lakers as an early MVP candidate.

By comparison, Wade played 67 games and averaged just 22.9 minutes a night last season and is yet to start for the Heat in 2018-19.

James’ elevated status juxtaposed against his friend’s isn’t a knock on Wade, either. After all, he is aging in a perfectly expected manner and still flashing moments of greatness in the final stage of his career. At least he is on the court and not coaching like fellow draftee Walton or parting ways with the Houston Rockets as a shell of his former self like Anthony.

Rather, it is an appreciation of just how special James is as one of the greatest to ever do it.

Sharing the court with Wade for the final time while Walton coached from the sidelines was another reminder this extended dominance isn’t how things are typically done in the NBA.

Wade is getting tribute videos in 2018, while James is still carving up opponents as a championship contender.

Kyle Kuzma’s Scoring Ability Easing LeBron’s Workload

Brandon Ingram missed his third straight game with an ankle injury, which put more of the spotlight on Kuzma as a secondary act to James.

He delivered on the offensive end yet again, scoring at least 20 points for the fifth straight game and seventh time in the last nine. The streak is a welcome change for the Lakers after the second-year playmaker scored in single digits in three of the previous five contests before the last nine.

Los Angeles is still just 5-5 when James doesn’t score at least 25 points, but it won its last two such games during Kuzma’s recent scoring stretch.

That is critical because having the offensive onus fall on James’ shoulders every night at this stage of his career is a lot to ask with loftier goals looming. The Lakers will need James as fresh as possible come April, May and potentially June.

Kuzma is proving to be someone Walton can count on when looking to take some of the workload away from James. He drilled three shots from beyond the arc against the Heat—a necessary skill set with defenders collapsing on James—and attacked the basket a number of times.

James understands the biggest games are yet to come as a championship-winning veteran, and Kuzma’s continued emergence will save some important miles on his legs before the stretch run.

What’s Next?

Both teams are on the road for their next games, with Miami at the Utah Jazz on Wednesday and Los Angeles at the Houston Rockets on Thursday.

NASA spacecraft finds signs of water on Bennu asteroid

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has found water on the asteroid Bennu, after finishing its two-year trip to the formation.

Sitting 12 miles (19 kilometres) from the surface, the probe has discovered water hidden inside the asteroid’s clay minerals, thanks to data obtained from the probe’s spectrometers.

SEE ALSO: NASA spacecraft reaches asteroid Bennu, plans to send 4 pounds of rock back to Earth

During its two-year, 1.4 million-mile (2.2 million-kilometre) trip to the asteroid, instruments aboard OSIRIS-REx — that’s the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer — began to make scientific observations of Bennu between mid-August and early December.

Two of these instruments identified molecules on the asteroid, containing bonded oxygen and hydrogen atoms — these bad boys are known as hydroxyls.

These hydroxyls, NASA said, can be found across the asteroid in water-bearing clay minerals, which means Bennu’s rocky surface once had contact with water.

But don’t think Bennu was once brimming with lakes, or even puddles. According to NASA, the asteroid is actually too small to have ever hosted water in liquid form, but its parent body could have.

“The presence of hydrated minerals across the asteroid confirms that Bennu, a remnant from early in the formation of the solar system, is an excellent specimen for the OSIRIS-REx mission to study the composition of primitive volatiles and organics,” Amy Simon, OVIRS deputy instrument scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a statement.

OSIRIS-REx is NASA’s first asteroid sample return mission. When the spacecraft lands on the surface of Bennu in July 2020, it will gather 4.4 pounds (2 kilograms) of rock over a year and a half to send back to Earth in a capsule.

“When samples of this material are returned by the mission to Earth in 2023, scientists will receive a treasure trove of new information about the history and evolution of our solar system,” added Simon.

Apple files appeal on iPhone sales ban in China

Certain iPhone models have been banned from sale in China.

Apple is appealing a decision that bans certain iPhone models from being sold in China.

As reported by CNBC, the tech giant filed an appeal on Monday, after San Diego-based chipmaker Qualcomm was granted multiple injunctions against Apple’s Chinese subsidiaries earlier that day.

SEE ALSO: Apple’s latest business move hints at a Netflix-like approach with Apple Music

It means Apple is prohibited from selling the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X domestically in China. Qualcomm claims that Apple infringed on two of its patents.

The patents relate to features which allow users to adjust and reformat the size and appearance of photographs, and to manage applications using a touch screen when viewing, navigating and dismissing apps on their phones.

“Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us. These Court orders are further confirmation of the strength of Qualcomm’s vast patent portfolio,” Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm executive vice president and general counsel, said in a statement online.

While the ban is only limited to China, it’s another chapter in the ongoing and messy legal saga between the two tech giants, which resulted in Apple dumping Qualcomm’s (superior) cellular modems earlier this year.

The dispute stems from Qualcomm’s charging of patent royalties, which Apple has decried as extortionist.

“Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world. All iPhone models remain available for our customers in China,” Apple said in a statement to the news outlet.

“We will pursue all our legal options through the courts.”

Mashable has reached out to Apple for further comment.

Russell Wilson, Stingy Seahawks D Destroy Shaky Kirk Cousins, Vikings on MNF

SEATTLE, WA - DECEMBER 10: Russell Wilson #3 of the Seattle Seahawks runs the ball for a first down in the second quarter against the Minnesota Vikings at CenturyLink Field on December 10, 2018 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images

The Seattle Seahawks earned their fourth straight win, beating the Minnesota Vikings 21-7 on Monday night at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

With the victory, the 8-5 Seahawks solidify their hold on fifth place in the NFC. Seattle is now 1.5 games ahead of the 6-6-1 Vikings, getting the team one step closer to securing a wild-card berth for the postseason.

Russell Wilson finished 10-of-20 for 72 yards and an interception. Chris Carson chipped in with 90 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

Kirk Cousins threw for 208 yards and a touchdowns. Stefon Diggs finished as the Vikings’ leading receiver after catching four passes for 76 yards.

Seahawks’ Blueprint for Success on Full Display vs. Vikings

It wasn’t a lot of fun to watch, but the Seahawks’ performance showed what they need to do over the remainder of the season. Especially with Doug Baldwin nursing a hip injury that ruled him out for the game, Seattle is best suited to lean on the running game and count on the defense keeping the opponent out of the end zone.

The Seahawks defense in particular stepped up late in the game when one touchdown would’ve put the Vikings ahead.

Omar Ruiz @OmarDRuiz

The #Seahawks are proving that just because they no longer have a historically great defense, full of future Hall of famers, doesn’t mean they still can’t have a great defense, period. And that Bobby Wagner is still the best middle linebacker in the game.

Field Gulls @FieldGulls

Seahawks need the defense to have fourth quarter game-winning drives like you’d expect from an offense. Outside of an outstanding grab by Stefon Diggs, they’re getting the job done.

Seattle doesn’t boast as much star power on defense as it did during the Legion of Boom era, and the team ranked 16th in defensive efficiency entering Week 14, per Football Outsiders.

And on offense, the running back trio of Carson, Rashaad Penny and Mike Davis combined to gain 156 yards on 33 carries. Wilson also scrambled for 61 yards, breaking off a 40-yard run late in the fourth quarter as the Seahawks marched down the field.

Nick Wagoner @nwagoner

40-yard run by Wilson has Seahawks knocking on the red zone again. Points here should put this one away for Seattle.

Carson capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run with two minutes, 53 seconds remaining.

Looking at the NFC playoff picture, winning ugly should be Seattle’s strategy.

The Dallas Cowboys beat the New Orleans Saints in Week 13 by adopting a physical approach and keeping the Saints offense off the field. Likewise, the Chicago Bears handed the Los Angeles Rams their second loss of the season Sunday after holding Los Angeles to 214 total yards and forcing four turnovers.

The Seahawks don’t have the playmakers to keep up with the Rams or Saints in a track meet. But they can make a deep playoff run by using their smashmouth offense and getting timely stops on defense.

Conservative Kirk Cousins Is Sinking Vikings

As good as the Seahawks defense was, the Vikings have no excuse for putting up just 276 total yards. Many of their problems on offense started with Cousins.

Minnesota gave Cousins $84 million guaranteed in the offseason to help make the team a Super Bowl contender. Instead, the Vikings are fighting for their playoff lives and have slipped from fifth to 17th in offensive efficiency, per Football Outsiders.

mike freeman @mikefreemanNFL

Not only has Cousins failed to lift the Vikings. They’ve regressed. This was a playoff team last year.
Same ol’ Cousins.

CJ Fogler @cjzero

Something spectacular about having Kirk Cousins, Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen, Kyle Rudolph, and Dalvin Cook and still feeling like the Seahawks 3-0 might be insurmountable tonight

With his massive contract came a new set of expectations for Cousins. The issue for Minnesota is he’s basically the same quarterback he was for the Washington Redskins.

Myron Medcalf @MedcalfByESPN

Some people will stay on the “it’s not all on Kirk Cousins” train. That’s fine. And it’s true. BUT Mike Zimmer went out of his way to tell us that Case Keenum wasn’t legit to set up the acquisition of the $84 million guaranteed for HIS QB. Zimmer deserves the blame. He did this.

Monday night was a perfect example of everything wrong with Cousins.

He has a pair of dynamic playmakers in Diggs and Adam Thielen, yet he was averse to taking any risks down the field. On one of the few occasions when he tested the Seahawks secondary deep, Diggs hauled in an incredible 48-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

NFL @NFL

.@KirkCousins8 to @StefonDiggs for the 48-yard catch! #SKOL

📺: #MINvsSEA on ESPN https://t.co/5c85OGV8HE

This game wasn’t a departure from the norm for Cousins either. He’s 22nd in yards per attempt (7.11) among qualified quarterbacks.

At some point, Cousins must be willing to take chances in the pocket, because he’s otherwise failing to make the most of the tools at his disposal. If he never reaches that point, then it’s a big problem for the Vikings because his contract makes him almost impossible to move.

What’s Next?

The Seahawks hit the road to take on the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, California. The Vikings welcome the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Huawei CFO proposes electronic monitoring, bail hearing adjourned

The chief financial officer of Chinese telecom giant Huawei has offered to submit to strict electronic monitoring as she sought release from Canadian detention – but will will have to wait at least one more day to see if she will be granted bail.

Meng Wanzhou was arrested at the request of Washington during a layover at the Vancouver airport on December 1, the same day that the leaders of China and the US agreed to a 90-day truce in their countries’ trade war that has threatened global economic growth.

The 46-year-old’s arrest rocked financial markets and infuriated Beijing, fuelling tensions between the world’s two largest economies and complicating efforts to resolve their trade dispute.

Washington has accused Huawei of using a Hong Kong shell company to sell equipment to Iran in violation of US sanctions. It also says Meng, daughter of founder Ren Zhengfei, and Huawei misled banks about the company’s business dealings in Iran.

China protested over the weekend by summoning the US and Canadian ambassadors, demanding that Washington withdraw its arrest warrant and warning Ottawa that it faces “grave consequences”.

Packed courtroom

The hearing, which began on Friday, has sparked widespread interest. On Monday, the courtroom was packed again with media and spectators, including some who came to support Meng. One man in the gallery brought binoculars to have a closer look at the 46-year-old executive, while outside court a man and woman held a sign that read “Free Ms. Meng”.

After a second daylong session on Monday, Justice William Ehrcke said the bail hearing would continue on Tuesday.

In urging the court to reject Meng’s bail request, prosecutor John Gibb-Carsley said the Huawei executive has vast resources and a strong incentive to flee as she is facing fraud charges in the US that could put her in prison for 30 years.

Gibb-Carsley later told the judge that if he does decide to grant bail it should include house arrest.

David Martin, Meng’s lawyer, said she was willing to pay for a surveillance company to monitor her and wear an ankle monitor but she wanted to be able to travel around Vancouver and its suburbs. Scot Filer of Lions Gate Risk Management group said his company would make a citizen’s arrest if she breached bail conditions.

Martin said Meng’s husband would put up both of their Vancouver homes plus $1m Canadian ($750,000) for a total value of $15 million Canadian ($11.2m) as collateral.

The judge cast doubt on that proposal, saying Meng’s husband is not a resident of British Columbia – a requirement for him to act as a guarantor that his wife will not flee – and his visitor visa expires in February.

The prosecutor said her husband has no meaningful connections to Vancouver and spends only two or three weeks a year in the city. Gibb-Carsley also expressed concern about the idea of using a security company paid by Meng.

He said later that $15m Canadian ($11.2m) would be an appropriate amount if the judge granted bail, adding that half should be in cash.

‘Damocles’ sword hanging over Chinese government’

Meng’s arrest has come at a time when the two countries are seeking to resolve a dispute over Beijing’s technology and industrial strategy. Washington has slapped tariffs on $250bn in Chinese imports, charging that Beijing steals US technology and forces US companies to turn over trade secrets.

Tariffs on $200bn of those imports were scheduled to rise from 10 percent to 25 percent on January 1. But over dinner with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Buenos Aires, Argentina, US President Donald Trump on December 1 agreed to delay the increase for 90 days, buying time for more negotiations.

Both sides have sought to keep the trade talks and the arrest separate, at least so far, but the developments in Canada roiled markets.

Stocks around the world fell on Monday over investor concerns about the continuing trade dispute, as well as the cloud hanging over Brexit negotiations after the UK’s prime minister postponed a vote on her deal for Britain to quit the European Union. In the US, stocks were volatile, tumbling in the morning and then recovering in the afternoon.

Bill Perry, a trade lawyer with Harris Bricken in Seattle, said China’s decelerating economy is putting pressure on Xi to make concessions before US tariffs go up.

“They need a trade deal. They don’t want the tariffs to go up to 25” percent, said Perry, who produces the “US China Trade War” blog. “This is Damocles’ sword hanging over the Chinese government.”

Over the weekend, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng summoned Canadian Ambassador John McCallum and US Ambassador Terry Branstad.

Le warned both countries that Beijing would take steps based on their response. Asked on Monday what those steps might be, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said only, “It totally depends on the Canadian side itself.”

The Canadian province of British Columbia has already canceled a trade mission to China amid fears China could detain Canadians in retaliation for Meng’s detention.

Huawei, the biggest global supplier of network gear for phone and internet companies, has become the target of US security concerns because of its ties to the Chinese government. The US has pressured other countries to limit use of its technology, warning they could be opening themselves up to surveillance and theft of information.

Lu, the foreign ministry spokesperson, accused unspecified countries of hyping the “so-called” threat.

“I must tell you that not a single piece of evidence have they ever presented to back their allegation,” he said. “To create obstacles for companies’ normal operations based on speculation is quite absurd.”

Canadian officials have declined to comment on Chinese threats of retaliation, instead emphasising the independence of Canada’s judiciary and the importance of Ottawa’s relationship with Beijing.

YouTube Rewind 2018 is already the second-most disliked video ever

Since 2010, YouTube has released a yearly wrap-up of its most popular videos and creators.

It did the same thing this year with YouTube Rewind 2018. It featured the likes of Will Smith, plus creators Molly Burke, Liza Koshy, and Simone Giertz in a predictably upbeat compilation released last Thursday.

There’s also an homage to K-pop, some late night show hosts doing Fortnite dances, and yes, more Fortnite references.

Fast forward a few days, and the video has the distinct honor of becoming the second-most disliked video on YouTube, racking up an impressive 7.7 million dislikes since its debut.

The number one spot belongs to the music video for Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” which has 9.7 million dislikes. However, “Baby” has 2 billion views, and it was posted all the way back in 2010.

The deep unpopularity of YouTube’s Rewind video, which becomes clear through the video’s comments and social media chatter, is that YouTube has omitted some of the platform’s biggest stars.

The likes of Shane Dawson, Logan Paul, and PewDiePie don’t make an appearance, and that weird, but ultimately very popular boxing match between KSI and Paul didn’t rate a mention either. What gives?

Well, given Paul and PewDiePie‘s rather odious behavior in the past, it’s perhaps unsurprising that YouTube has cut them, as well as other unsavory elements out of its recap.

PewDiePie, real name Felix Kjellberg, released a reaction video to YouTube Rewind 2018. Kjellberg revealed that he was told by the company that he wouldn’t be included in the recap, not that he seems to mind.

“I remember Rewind was something that was a homage to the creators that year. It was something cool to be part of,” he said. “Now I’m almost glad I’m not in it, because it’s such a cringey video at this point. It’s disconnected with the community and its creators.”

But there’s a bigger picture, as The Verge’s Julia Alexander notes: This year’s video feels especially marketer and advertiser-friendly, to the detriment of its own community.

“Ignoring the moments that YouTube’s community cares about and pays attention to, like a boxing match that brought in nearly 1 million live viewers, hides an enormous part of the platform’s cultural shift,” she writes.

“It feels disingenuous, like YouTube is hiding its uglier side under a carpet while showing guests around.” It shouldn’t surprise us, but money certainly talks.

NBA Trade Rumors: JR Smith Drawing ‘Exploratory Interest’ from Rockets

The Houston Rockets are looking to close the gap with the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference and are reportedly interested in adding someone who played in the last four NBA Finals.

On Monday, Marc Stein of the New York Times reported Houston has “expressed exploratory interest in acquiring JR Smith.”

Stein noted Smith is “on hiatus” from the Cleveland Cavaliers as they continue to look for a trade partner.

Houston leads the league with 42.2 three-point attempts per night under head coach Mike D’Antoni, which could make Smith a good fit. James Harden and Chris Paul consistently draw additional defenders with their penetration and offensive abilities, and Smith could play off them and hit open looks off passes.

After his time alongside LeBron James, Smith is accustomed to playing with someone who attracts additional attention and kicks out.

The Rockets no longer have Trevor Ariza to knock down shots, but Smith could provide another capable option after he connected on 37.5 percent of his triples last season.

Smith is also a playoff-tested veteran with 130 postseason games on his resume. He helped the Cavaliers make it to the Finals in each of the last four years, drilling 43 percent of his playoff three-pointers in 2016 for the eventual champions and 50 percent of his playoff three-pointers in 2017.

While Smith won’t carry an offense single-handedly, he is well-suited to play alongside Harden and Paul and will be comfortable under the spotlight should Houston advance far in the playoffs again. Moving him would also make sense for the Cavaliers, who are looking to accelerate their rebuild by flipping veterans for young players and/or draft assets.
