TCU Grinds Out OT Victory vs. California in 2018 Cheez-It Bowl

TCU salvaged a disappointing season with a 10-7 overtime win over California in the 2018 Cheez-It Bowl.

Sewo Olonilua rushed for 194 yards and a touchdown to lead the Horned Frogs to victory in a wild matchup Wednesday. The teams combined for nine interceptions and 15 punts, but Jonathan Song helped secure the win with a 27-yard field goal in the first overtime.

Those watching along were certainly enjoying the wildness throughout:

Tom Fornelli @TomFornelli

I’m telling you now, I don’t care what happens the rest of the year, this game will be at No. 1 in my post-bowl rankings.

THE CHEEZ-IT BOWL IS THE BEST FOOTBALL GAME OF ALL TIME

Chris Vannini @ChrisVannini

I want to stop watching this game, but I can’t. It’s the Cheez-It of bowl games.

Nicole Auerbach @NicoleAuerbach

Congrats to TCU and Cal both for the most delightful game of the season. We salute you.

The bowl game, formerly known as the Cactus Bowl, was played at Chase Field in Phoenix as one of two games this postseason played at a baseball stadium (Pinstripe Bowl).

TCU (7-6) avoided a losing record on the season, something the team has only done three times in 19 years under Gary Patterson. California finished with a 7-6 record in the second year under Justin Wilcox.

Both teams came into the game with quality defenses but questionable offenses, neither averaging more than 25 points per game.

This lack of balance was obvious throughout the game, as both sides struggled to move the football consistently.

The turnovers were especially prevalent, starting with a miserable first half:

Yogi Roth @YogiRoth

This game. Seriously. 5 int’s in 17 minutes. Going to go out on a limb and say each team will run the ball 80% of the remaining snaps. #CheezItBowl

Barrett Sallee @BarrettSallee

Congratulations, you have an interception in the Cheez-It Bowl.

Yes, you.

Dan Wolken @DanWolken

The Cheez-It Bowl is a hot mess in the best way possible

There was a stretch of interceptions on four straight possessions, with six total before halftime.

It didn’t get any worse than this failed trick play that became a turnover:

Cal Football @CalFootball

Hawkins ✖2⃣ https://t.co/WAw52Ndees

Jaylinn Hawkins had three interceptions as part of an impressive effort from the Golden Bears defense.

Third-string quarterback Grayson Muehlstein struggled mightily for TCU, finishing 7-of-20 for 27 yards and four picks. He had three interceptions and just four completions in the first half for only 10 yards and didn’t do much more in the second.

However, the team relied upon the rushing attack to move the football and eventually get onto the scoreboard.

After Cal scored the only touchdown in the first half on a four-yard run by quarterback Chase Garbers, the Horned Frogs were finally able to tie the game at the end of the third quarter with a one-yard run by Olonilua.

TCU ran the ball on all seven plays of the scoring drive, including a Wildcat run to convert a fourth down.

Drew Davison @drewdavison

Sewo Olonilua has been one bright spot for Frogs O. What a run on 4th-and-2. Olonilua has 120 yards on 19 carries.

This production was enough to force overtime despite TCU having just 24 passing yards in regulation.

After Chase Forrest threw his second interception for California in overtime—giving the team five for the game when added to the three from Garbers—the Horned Frogs took advantage of the opportunity and never gave the ball back.

Neither team played well offensively, but Olonilua was the difference in the second half and overtime to help TCU secure its fourth bowl win in the last five years. After an injury-filled season, the squad will hope for more luck in 2019 while returning a lot of young talent.

Cal will also bring back several notable players on both sides of the ball, which could help make the team a legitimate contender in the Pac-12 next season.

Vontaze Burfict’s Latest Concussion Reportedly Could Be Career-Threatening

KANSAS CITY, MO - OCTOBER 21: Linebacker Vontaze Burfict #55 of the Cincinnati Bengals gets set on defense against the Kansas City Chiefs during the first half on October 21, 2018 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Peter G. Aiken/Getty Images)

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict suffered a concussion during Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Citing his colleague Katherine Terrell, Schefter reported the latest concussion “could put his career in jeopardy,” considering it’s the seventh of his career and second of the month.

Terrell noted the additional issues with this type of injury:

Katherine Terrell @Kat_Terrell

Those are only the seven we know about as well. I always wonder how many players have concussions that don’t end up in protocol. https://t.co/m4YrCMfM0G

Burfict is in his seventh NFL season.

Injuries have been a significant problem for him in this time, as he has failed to play in more than 11 games in any of the past five seasons.

He has also earned multiple suspensions during this stretch for both on-field play and failed drug tests.

Burfict has missed a total of 10 games because of suspension in his career to go with his $4.2 million worth of fines, per Spotrac.

The 28-year-old also turned heads in a negative way when he shook off a trainer while being brought off the field Sunday, via Dov Kleiman

At his best, Burfict is a Pro Bowl player who led the NFL with 177 total tackles in 2013, his last full season. However, injuries and off-field problems have derailed his career, and it seems he might have played his last game.

‘Occupation of Iraq is over’: Iraqi leaders denounce Trump visit

Iraqi political and militia leaders have condemned US President Donald Trump’s unannounced trip to Iraq as a violation of their country’s sovereignty.

In a surprise visit to US troops, Trump on Wednesday landed at an airbase west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where he thanked the soldiers for their service.

Sabah al-Saadi, the leader of the Islah parliamentary bloc, called for an emergency session of the Iraqi parliament “to discuss this blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and to stop these aggressive actions by Trump who should know his limits: The US occupation of Iraq is over”.

Islah is headed by Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr, who has long opposed the US presence in Iraq since a Washington-led invasion toppled the government of Saddam Hussein in 2003 over weapons of mass destruction and ties to al-Qaeda that both proved non-existent.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died in the conflict, which many analysts call one of the major US foreign policy debacles in recent history and one of the most destructive invasions in modern history

The Bina bloc, Islah’s rival in parliament and led by Iran-backed militia leader Hadi al-Amiri, also objected to Trump’s trip to Iraq.

“Trump’s visit is a flagrant and clear violation of diplomatic norms and shows his disdain and hostility in his dealings with the Iraqi government,” said a statement from Bina.

Trump did not meet any Iraqi officials during his three-hour long stay. A scheduled meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi was scrapped and the two leaders talked instead by telephone.

Abdul Mahdi’s office said in a statement that US authorities had informed Iraq’s leadership of the president’s visit in advance. The statement said the Iraqi prime minister and US president held a phone conversation due to a “disagreement over how to conduct the meeting”.

Iraqi legislators told Reuters news agency that the two leaders had disagreed over where their planned meeting should take place: Trump had asked to meet at the Ain al-Asad military base, an offer which Abdul Mahdi declined.

Syria withdrawal

Trump’s visit to Iraq came a week after his decision to withdraw all US troops from neighbouring Syria despite strong objections from domestic and foreign allies. Pentagon chief Jim Mattis and the US envoy to the coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group quit shortly after Trump’s announcement.

At the Ain al-Asad Airbase, Trump defended his decision to pull US soldiers out of Syria while insisting he has no similar plans for Iraq.

Falih Khazali, a former militia leader turned politician allied with Bina, accused the US of wanting to increase its presence in Iraq.

“The American leadership was defeated in Iraq and wants to return again under any pretext, and this is what we will never allow,” he said.

Bina said Trump’s visit “places many question marks on the nature of the US military presence and its real objectives, and what these objectives could pose to the security of Iraq”.

UPFRONT: Is it time the US apologised for invading Iraq? (24:58)

‘US only given us destruction and devastation’

While there has been no full-scale violence in Iraq since ISIL suffered a series of defeats last year, some 5,200 US troops train and advise Iraqi forces still waging a campaign against the group.

Iraq’s Shia militias, also known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), many of which are supported by Iran, oppose the presence of US troops in the region. The PMF was made formally part of the security forces this year after helping the military defeat  ISIL in Iraq in 2017.

Qais al-Khazali, the leader of the powerful Iran-backed Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia, said on Twitter: “Iraqis will respond with a parliamentary decision to oust your (US) military forces. And if they do not leave, we have the experience and the ability to remove them by other means that your forces are familiar with.”

Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, said there is a sense of “confusion” in Iraq in regards to the US’s policy in the region.

“They are very concerned in Iraq about the 2,000 troops pulled out of Syria,” he said. “Baghdad is much more safe than it has been for a very long time and the Iraqis are very confident that they can deal with ISIL within their own borders – but what really concerns them is Syria and that’s where they are less confident.”

In Baghdad’s streets, meanwhile, Iraqis denounced the US presence in the country.

“We won’t get anything from America,” resident Mohammad Abdullah told Reuters news agency.

“They’ve been in Iraq 16 years, and they haven’t given anything to the country except destruction and devastation.”

Last month, a study said that hundreds of thousands of people have been killed due to the so-called “war on terror” launched by the US in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The report by the Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs stated that between 182,272 and 204,575 civilians have been killed in Iraq.

Former LA Galaxy Coach Sigi Schmid, MLS’ Winningest Manager, Dies at 65

FILE - In this Oct. 27, 2015, file photo, then-Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid walks off the field following an MLS soccer training session, in Tukwila, Wash. Schmid, the winningest coach in Major League Soccer history who led the LA Galaxy to the first of five MLS Cup titles, has stepped down as coach of the Galaxy. The team said Schmid's resignation was effective immediately Monday, Sept. 10, 2018. Dominic Kinnear was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren, File)

Ted S. Warren/Associated Press

Sigi Schmid, who stands as Major League Soccer’s all-time leader in managerial wins with 228, died on Wednesday at the age of 65.

The family confirmed his death, per Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times, who also noted that the cause has not been disclosed. As the time of his passing, Schmid was awaiting a heart transplant at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Schmid enjoyed a fantastic coaching career leading a host of teams, including the UCLA Bruins, the United States Men’s Soccer under-20 team, Seattle Sounders FC, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Columbus Crew. He won three national titles at UCLA and two MLS Cups with L.A. and Columbus.

Condolences poured in after news of Schmid’s death broke.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber released a statement:

Don Garber @thesoccerdon

Major League Soccer is devastated by the news of the passing of Sigi Schmid. Sigi will go down as one of the leading figures in the history of our league. https://t.co/xki3MDQ5Ka

Ex-Galaxy beat writer Fred J. Robledo noted Schmid’s gregarious and extroverted nature:

Fred J. Robledo @SGVNSports

Hearing that Sigi Schmid has died hurts. When I covered the Galaxy, had so much respect for him. He was an incredible guy who loved to tell stories and always asked how you were doing. RIP Sigi https://t.co/5FR3yoApQu

New England Revolution play-by-play announcer Brad Feldman offered strong praise of Schmid’s character regardless of his team’s outcome:

Brad Feldman @BradFeldman_

RIP Sigi Schmid. Always gracious and dignified – win, lose or draw – he was a credit to the sport in this country and to MLS. A true winner. https://t.co/vwr774JCaS

Per Baxter, former USMNT managers Jurgen Klinsmann also provided his thoughts on a man who seemed universally loved on Wednesday:

“He was an amazing family person and his love for soccer was endless. He was like an encyclopedia. He formed soccer in this country like no one else over the last 30 years, at UCLA, in the college world, or by building the success and foundation of the Galaxy, the Columbus Crew and the Seattle Sounders. His brain was always going 200 mph.

“He was such a giver. Sigi leaves us far too early. People like him are very rare in this world: straight forward, giver, passionate, endlessly dedicated to his mission and to his family.”

Schmid, Bruce Arena and Steve Sampson stand as the only three coaches in history to win an MLS Cup and an NCAA title.

MLB Trade Rumors: Indians ‘Engaged’ in Corey Kluber Talks with Padres

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Corey Kluber throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, in Kansas City, Mo. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

Charlie Riedel/Associated Press

The San Diego Padres are currently involved in trade talks to acquire Corey Kluber from the Cleveland Indians, according to Jon Paul Morosi of MLB.com.

While the Los Angeles Dodgers are still considered the favorites to land the pitcher in a trade, the Padres remain interested in the ace.

Young major leaguers Manuel Margot, Hunter Renfroe and Austin Hedges have been discussed as possible parts going back to Cleveland.

As Morosi noted, the Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds have all shown interest in a possible trade for Kluber, as well as the Padres and Dodgers.

The buzz is understandable, considering the pitcher’s effectiveness on the mound over the past few years. The 32-year-old has two Cy Young awards already on his resume and came close last season before finishing in third place in the voting.

He finished the year with a 2.89 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 215 innings, plus a career-high 20 wins.

Kluber can be a game-changer at the front of any rotation if the Indians decide to pull the trigger on a deal.

Meanwhile, the Padres struggled to a 66-96 record last season but have been aggressively looking for a frontline starter throughout the winter.

They had discussions with the New York Mets about Noah Syndergaard, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv, as well as the Toronto Blue Jays regarding Marcus Stroman, per Morosi.

In every case, the Padres have noted that top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. isn’t available, but they have a deep farm system and several quality young players that could generate interest in a deal.

BC vs. Boise State First Responder Bowl Canceled Due to Severe Weather

Bad weather conditions in the Dallas area caused the 2018 First Responder Bowl between Boston College and Boise State to be canceled.

Per an announcement on Twitter, the game will officially be ruled a no-contest.

Boston College was leading 7-0 in the first quarter after AJ Dillon’s 19-yard touchdown. A lightning strike near the Cotton Bowl forced a delay of at least 30 minutes with five minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

As the delay moved past an hour, another round of lightning hit the area. That led representatives from both teams to meet with game officials to discuss options before the decision was made to cancel the contest:

First Responder Bowl @FRBowl

Another strike, unfortunately it means the clock resets on the delay…

Thanks to @BroncoSportsFB for the clip! https://t.co/sINQRFcfBV

Per Weather.com, the forecast in Dallas calls for thunderstorms all day with the percentage of precipitation dropping under 50 percent after 1 a.m. local time.

Boston College finished with a 7-5 record, and Boise State posted its third straight 10-win season.

Trump defends Syria pull-out during surprise visit to Iraq

In a surprise trip to Iraq, President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended his decision to withdraw US forces from Syria where they have been helping battle the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.

“We’re no longer the suckers, folks,” Trump told American servicemen and women at a base in western Iraq.

Trump said it’s because of US military gains that he can withdraw 2,000 forces from Syria. During his first visit to a troubled region, Trump also said he has no plans to withdraw US forces from Iraq.

“I made it clear from the beginning that our mission in Syria was to strip ISIS of its military strongholds,” Trump told troops clad in fatigues at al-Asad Airbase west of Baghdad.

The decision to withdraw troops from Syria came despite objections from a number of politicians within his own party and Pentagon officials.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis abruptly resigned following the announcement. Mattis was expected to leave his post in February, but Trump forced him out early, saying he was replacing Mattis on January 1 with deputy defence secretary Patrick Shanahan in an acting capacity.

Brett McGurk, the top US envoy in the anti-ISIL fight, announced he was leaving earlier than expected due to Trump’s decision.

Trump’s announcement also rattled allies around the world, including in Iraq.

Trump said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to take out “any remnants” of ISIL left in Syria. The US presence in Syria was not meant to be “open-ended,” he said, adding that other wealthy nations should pay for rebuilding Syria.

First visit to conflict zone

Trump’s trip to Iraq was shrouded in secrecy. Air Force One flew overnight from Washington, DC, landing at an airbase west of Baghdad under the cover of darkness Wednesday evening. It is his first visit with troops stationed in a troubled region.

Trump has drawn criticism from some in the US military for not having visited US troops in conflict zones since taking office in January 2017, particularly after he canceled a trip to a World War One cemetery in France last month due to rain.

While there has been no full-scale violence in Iraq since ISIL suffered a series of defeats last year, US troops train and advise Iraqi forces still waging a campaign against the group.

The US military says it has about 5,200 troops in Iraq, focused on training and advising Iraqi troops to ensure that ISIL does not re-emerge.

NATO defence ministers agreed in February to a bigger “train-and-advise” mission in Iraq after a US call for the alliance to help stabilise the country after three years of war against ISIL.

On his way home from Iraq, he will also stop to visit troops at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

Can the US be a dependable ally?
