NFL Playoff Schedule 2019: Bracket Dates, Picture and Wild-Card Predictions

The Indianapolis Colts knocked off the Tennessee Titans on Sunday night to secure the final playoff spot of 2018. However, while the score did get a close at times, Indianapolis dominated the Blaine Gabbert-led Titans most of the game. The real pre-playoff drama occurred earlier in the day.

The late-afternoon game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns came down to the wire, and as it played out, Pittsburgh Steelers fans and players alike watched the action unfold at Heinz Field.

The AFC North title was on the line, and the Ravens won it with a defensive stand just outside of field-goal range. The win gave them a 10-6 record and the division, and it left the Colts and Titans fighting for the final playoff spot.

Pittsburgh needed a Browns upset to take the division, thanks to a 2-4 slide to finish the season. They and the 8-7-1 Minnesota Vikings both watched their playoff dreams die on Sunday afternoon. The Philadelphia Eagles slipped into the postseason with a win and a Vikings loss, and with Indianapolis win on Sunday night, the playoff picture was set.

The New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams all have a first-round bye. The other eight playoff teams will be in action next weekend, and we’re here to make our predictions for how that weekend unfolds.

Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans

When: Saturday, January 5 at 4:35 p.m. ET

TV and Live Stream: ESPN, ABC, WatchESPN and fuboTV

The Houston Texans have been one of the better stories in the NFL this season. They lost Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus to season-ending injuries last season. All three returned to form in 2018. The Texans started the season 0-3, they then rattled off nine straight wins and went on to go 11-5 and win the AFC South.

With the Colts coming to town, we’re going to have a familiar matchup. We’re also getting an unlikely one, as Indianapolis started the season 1-5.

Indianapolis is actually the more dangerous of the two teams in this game, as they’ve been scrapping for a playoff shot over the last several months. They’re a balanced team with an improving defense, a strong running game and a 100-percent Andrew Luck.

Luck vs. Watson makes for an intriguing quarterback duel, but we believe this game will be decided in the trenches. That’s a matchup that favors Indianapolis, especially when it comes to pass protection. Watson was sacked 62 times in the regular season.

Ultimately, a poor offensive line and a lack of receiving options outside of DeAndre Hopkins could cost the Texans. The Colts don’t have these glaring issues. Indianapolis won 24-21 the last time these two teams met, and this game might not even be as close.

Prediction: Colts 30, Texans 20

Seattle Seahawks at Dallas Cowboys

When: Saturday, January 5 at 8:15 p.m. ET

TV and Live Stream: Fox, Fox Sports Go and fuboTV

The  NFC action certainly kicks off with a bang. The Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys are similar teams that should make for an exciting matchup. Both have solid defenses (each is allowing fewer than 22 points per game) and both have a rushing attack that can dominate games. Dallas has home-field advantage. Seattle has a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

There are two big factors in this game that favor Seattle, though. One is Wilson. He is a quarterback you trust more in a clutch playoff situation—as long as it isn’t throwing from the 2-yard line. Prescott has yet to prove he can deliver late in a playoff game, and if he’s asked to do so against Seattle’s aggressive defense, it could spell trouble.

The other factor is that Seattle is built to win on the road. While Dallas has the better running back in Ezekiel Elliott, the Seahawks have the league’s No. 1 rushing offense (158.5 yards per game). A strong running game and a stiff defense are always going to travel, and this lessens the advantage Dallas gets from being at home.

This is going to be a physical, hard-fought battle, and it truly could go either way. While not everyone on Seattle’s roster is playoff-tested, Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll are experienced in these types of games. Because of this, we’re predicting the Seahawks in a close one.

Prediction: Seahawks 24, Cowboys 20

Carolyn Kaster/Associated Press

Los Angeles Chargers at Baltimore Ravens

When: Sunday, January 6 at 1:05 p.m. ET

TV and Live Stream: CBS, CBS All Access and fuboTV

In a rematch of Week 16, the Ravens will host the Los Angeles Chargers with a shot at the Patriots on the line. The last matchup came in Los Angeles, and the Ravens won handily, 22-10. However, the Chargers are eager to get a little revenge.

“Round two — that’s all I can say about that,” Chargers defensive back Desmond King said, per Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com. “It’s round two and we have to get ready to play.”

This game is likely to come down to L.A’s ability to slow the run and its ability to protect the football. The Browns showed on Sunday that with some creative playcalling, a team can move the ball on Baltimore’s defense. Cleveland had 426 yards of offense but also turned the ball over three times. Those turnovers are why Baltimore is in the postseason instead of Pittsburgh.

The Chargers have shown they can win on the road in tough environments—they won in Pittsburgh and Kansas City late in the season—but they won’t if they cannot protect the ball. Philip Rivers’ two interceptions in the last outing against Baltimore were costly, and he’s had six in the last three games.

Our guess is that coach Anthony Lynn makes ball-security a major point of emphasis this week and the Chargers are more careful with the ball this time around. However, we believe a late turnover will still doom the Chargers, just like it did the Browns on Sunday.

Prediction: Ravens 26, Chargers 22

Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears

When: Sunday, January 6 at 4:40 p.m. ET

TV and Live Stream: NBC, NBC Sports App and fuboTV

The Eagles aren’t quite the same team they were last season, but over the last few weeks, they’ve looked a lot like that Super Bowl squad. Nick Foles has brought some chemistry to the offense, the defense is feeding off the energy, and a three-game winning streak has the Eagles set to visit the Chicago Bears.

What awaits is a Bears defense that has allowed a league-low 17.7 points per game. The Eagles are going to need every bit of that offensive chemistry to put points on the board in Chicago.

This game will largely come down to Foles’ health. He left Sunday’s game with a rib injury, and he is set to undergo further tests on Monday, according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer:

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer

Eagles are planning more tests for Nick Foles ribs/chest tomorrow. Was in a lot of pain going into x-rays but hoping just a bruise and can play in playoffs

If Foles is at or close to 100 percent, we believe the edge will lie with Philadelphia. He has already pulled out wins against playoff teams (Houston and the Rams) in recent weeks, and it’s not like he lacks big-time playoff experience.

While Chicago can certainly lean on its run game and defense, the inexperience of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky could be the Bears’ downfall. If the Eagles are forced to start Nate Sudfeld, though, the advantage will rest with the Bears.

“My plan is to get ready to roll,” Foles said, per ESPN’s Michele Steele.

For now, we’re going to assume that Foles will start, and because of that, we’re going to pick the Eagles to come out on top.

Prediction: Eagles 22, Bears 17

Number of journalists killed on the job in 2018 rises

The number of journalists and media workers killed while carrying out their jobs rose again in 2018, reversing a downward trend of the previous three years, according to a new report by an an international trade association.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said on Monday that 94 journalists and media workers died in targeted killings, bomb attacks and crossfire incidents this year.

The figure, up from 82 killings recorded in 2017, included 84 journalists, camera people and technicians as well as 10 media staff members including drivers and protection officers.

Six of the victims were women and there were also another three work-related accidental deaths, the Brussels-based group’s annual report said.

Afghanistan: 16

Mexico: 11

Yemen: 9

Syria: 8

India: 7

Pakistan: 5

Somalia: 5

United States: 5

Philippines: 3

Ecuador: 3

Brazil: 3

Colombia: 2

Palestine: 2

Guatemala : 2

The most dangerous place to be a journalist was Afghanistan, where 16 media workers lost their lives. At least nine journalists were killed in an explosion in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, in April after arriving to the scene to cover the aftermath of an earlier suicide bombing.

In Mexico, where organised crime often targets journalists, 11 media workers were killed.

Nine were killed in Yemen, eight in Syria, seven in India, six in Somalia and five each in Pakistan and the United States. Three were killed in the Philippines, Ecuador and Brazil, and two in Colombia, Guatemala and the besieged Gaza Strip – Palestinian journalists Ahmad Abu Hussein and  Yaser Murtaja were killed by Israeli forces in April while covering months-long mass protests along the fence with Israel.

The list “paints a situation of on-going safety crisis in journalism, which was highlighted by the cruel murder of the Washington Post columnist and Saudi national, Jamal Khashoggi“, the IFJ said in a statement.

Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October. His body has not been found.

Khashoggi wrote critically of Saudi Arabia’s government, and the alleged involvement of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the journalist’s slaying has put the governments of other countries under pressure to sever economic and political ties.

“Jamal Khashoggi was a very well-known figure, but you know, the most shocking statistic is that we know that nine of 10 journalist murders remain unpunished in the world,” IFJ President Philippe Leruth said.

Leruth demanded that United Nations member states adopt a convention on the security and protection of journalists that it presented to UN missions in New York in October.

“This convention, supported by the profession as a whole, is a concrete response to crimes committed against journalists in full impunity,” he said.

‘Sad reminder journalists’ safety remains elusive’

The IFJ connects some 600,000 media professionals from 187 trade unions and associations in more than 140 countries.

Imprisoned in Egypt: Two years since arrest of Mahmoud Hussein

The group said the new report showed that journalists face dangers apart from the risks of reporting from war zones and covering extremist movements.

“There were other factors, such as the increasing intolerance to independent reporting, populism, rampant corruption and crime, as well as the breakdown of law and order,” the IFJ said.

Anthony Bellanger, the group’s general secretary, called the numbers on the group’s list “a sad reminder that the safety of journalists will remain elusive as long as countries boasting institutions which should be enforcing the law but have been paralysed by corruption and incompetence in the face of unrelenting assault on journalism”.

He added: “As such, they stand as a damning indictment of the authorities for their failure to uphold the journalists’ right to their physical safety and to guarantee an informed public discourse in a democracy.”

Bernie alumni seek meeting to address ‘sexual violence’ on ‘16 campaign

Sen. Bernie Sanders

People involved in the effort said they signed the letter before Sen. Bernie Sanders officially launched a 2020 presidential bid in the hopes that it would spur real action within his campaign (if he opts to run). | Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Elections

The signees are looking to change what they call a pervasive culture of toxic masculinity in the campaign world.

More than two dozen women and men who worked on Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign are seeking a meeting with the senator and his top political advisers to “discuss the issue of sexual violence and harassment on the 2016 campaign, for the purpose of planning to mitigate the issue in the upcoming presidential cycle,” according to a copy of letter obtained by POLITICO.

“In recent weeks there has been an ongoing conversation on social media, in texts, and in person, about the untenable and dangerous dynamic that developed during our campaign,” they wrote.

Story Continued Below

Organizers of the effort said they did not intend for the letter to become public, but they confirmed that they sent it to senior Sanders officials on Sunday afternoon.

Friends of Bernie Sanders, the senator’s principal campaign committee, responded to the letter in a statement to POLITICO. “We thank the signers of the letter for their willingness to engage in this incredibly important discussion,” the statement reads. “We always welcome hearing the experiences and views of our former staff. We also value their right to come to us in a private way so their confidences and privacy are respected. And we will honor this principle with respect to this private letter.”

The committee also pointed to new policies implemented during the senator’s 2018 reelection campaign that included creating a toll-free hotline run by a third party to report incidents and mandating training for all staff and volunteers.

The signees did not describe specific instances of “sexual violence and harassment” that occurred on the campaign. The statement circulated broadly over the past weekend among former staffers who added their names in support and was not specific to people who had experienced harassment or violence.

Several people who signed the letter said that their effort is not just about Sanders’ 2016 or 2020 presidential campaigns, but rather about what they called a pervasive culture of toxic masculinity in the campaign world. They stressed that they hoped their letter would not be reduced to reinforcing the “Bernie Bro” caricature, but rather would be one part of a larger reckoning among people running campaigns.

“This letter is just a start,” said one of the organizers who declined to be named. “We are addressing what happened on the Bernie campaign but as people that work in this space we see that all campaigns are extremely dangerous to women and marginalized people and we are attempting to fix that.”

People involved in the effort said they signed the letter before Sanders (I-Vt.) officially launched a 2020 presidential bid in the hopes that it would lead to real action if and when the senator begins assembling his team. Organizers wrote they wanted the meeting to produce a plan for “implementing concrete sexual harassment policies and procedures; and a commitment to hiring diverse leadership to pre-empt the possibility of replicating the predatory culture from the first presidential campaign.”

The signees range from field organizers to some of the top officials on the 2016 campaign, according to multiple people involved in the effort. Some of the signees do not expect to join any 2020 campaign while others are open to joining a potential Sanders 2020 bid.

The letter also requested the meeting to be in-person with an unrecorded phone line for those who cannot attend and that it include 2016 campaign manager Jeff Weaver; Sanders‘ chief of staff, Caryn Compton; deputy chief of staff Ari Rabin-Havt; the campaign manager for Sanders’ 2018 re-election effort, Shannon Jackson; and top communications official Arianna Jones, along with Sanders himself.

“It is critically important that Senator Sanders attend this meeting to understand the full scope of the issue from 2016 and how the campaign plans to move forward,” the letter states.

The letter is just the latest instance of potential Democratic presidential candidates and lawmakers of both parties confronting a culture of zero tolerance for sexual harassment and allegations of sexual assault.

Several members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, resigned or announced their retirement in 2017 and 2018 in the wake of allegations about their own behavior or conduct of their top aides. Earlier this month, both chambers of Congress passed legislation to combat harassment that required members of Congress to pay for settlements instead of relying on taxpayer dollars.

Democratic professionals and progressive grass-roots organizers, in particular, are pushing the party and its leaders to be more vigilant about misbehavior, especially given the rise of the Women’s March and #MeToo movements.

The issue is particularly fraught for potential 2020 presidential campaigns. As likely campaigns interview staffers, there has already been a higher level of scrutiny for past predatory or misogynistic behavior, according to several people involved in possible campaigns.

A longtime top staffer to Sen. Kamala Harris resigned earlier this month after the Sacramento Bee found that the California Department of Justice had settled a lawsuit against him for $400,000 that included allegations of gender harassment and retaliation while he served under Harris when she was state attorney general.

“We were unaware of this issue and take accusations of harassment extremely seriously. This evening, Mr. [Larry] Wallace offered his resignation to the senator and she accepted it,” Harris spokeswoman Lily Adams told the Bee.

Season 5 of ‘Black Mirror’ will be delayed because of ‘Bandersnatch’

'Black Mirror: Bandersnatch' unsurprisingly was a time drain.

With its myriad of decisions and endings, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch certainly looked like a hell of a film (or game?) to put together.

So much so that in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, producer Annabel Jones confirmed that Season 5 of the Netflix series would be delayed, with an arrival set for sometime in 2019.

SEE ALSO: A game from ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ is playable now

It’s due in part to the “enormous” creative time that the film took, and Jones herself had “forgotten” how many endings there are in Bandersnatch, although the widely distributed number is five

The show’s creator Charlie Brooker said there are definitely more endings though, where the unwieldy, wild nature of the choose-your-own-adventure story apparently has parts that are very difficult to reach, and may never be accessed.

Jones and Brooker used a storytelling tool developed by Netflix called Branch Manager, which allowed them to bring together the interactive film.

What you won’t see in the forthcoming season, however, is interactivity. The episodes will be linear, and there will likely be a change in tone to the usual gut-wrenchingly sad stories we’re used to from Black Mirror by now.

“We’re doing more optimistic episodes and stories, rather than just dystopian and negative ones,” Brooker said in another interview with the New York Times. “We want to keep the show interesting for us.”

Todd Bowles Fired as Jets Head Coach After 4 Seasons with Team

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles in action against the Indianapolis Colts during an NFL football game on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, in East Rutherford, N.J. (Brad Penner/AP Images for Panini)

Brad Penner/Associated Press

The New York Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles on Sunday after four years at the helm:

New York Jets @nyjets

Chairman & CEO Christopher Johnson has informed Todd Bowles he will not be returning in 2019.

📰 https://t.co/JgKBKH0I2h https://t.co/X1m1Ri34Sk

Bowles led the Jets to a 4-12 record in 2018, which marked the continuation of a disappointing run for the Elizabeth, New Jersey, native.

During his tenure in New York, Bowles went 24-40, and he capped his stint with three consecutive losing seasons.

Things started promisingly for the former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator, as he went 10-6 in his first season with the Jets in 2015. New York missed the playoffs in 2015, though, and it never returned to that level under Bowles.

The lack of a reliable starting quarterback marred Bowles’ tenure, but he may have had a hand in the development of a franchise signal-caller this season.

New York selected Sam Darnold out of USC with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, and though he was shaky to start his career and made his share of mistakes, he made promising strides over the final month of the season.

Darnold did that despite having limited weapons around him, so his progress could make the Jets’ head coaching job a desirable one with Bowles now out of the picture.

It isn’t likely the 55-year-old Bowles will immediately land on his feet with another head NFL job, but he shouldn’t have much trouble finding work as a coordinator.

Though the Jets have struggled defensively in recent seasons, they were fourth in total defense and ninth in scoring defense under Bowles in 2015.

Also, in his two seasons as Arizona’s defensive coordinator, Bowles led the Cards to top-10 finishes in points allowed.

Things didn’t work out for Bowles in New York, but he is still a quality defensive mind who could be an asset to many coaching staffs in the NFL.

Nukes, economy, Trump summit: What’s in Kim Jong-un’s 2019 agenda

Kim Jong-un will be keeping North Korea watchers busy on New Year’s Day, when he is expected to give his annual address laying out the country’s top priorities for the year ahead.

The speech, which is normally broadcast on North Korea’s state-run television network, is often the best gauge of what the North Korean leadership is focused on and what tone it will take in its dealings with the outside world.

For 2019, it will be parsed carefully for clues about Kim’s thinking on denuclearisation talks with Washington and a second summit with US President Donald Trump, relations with South Korea and Pyongyang’s efforts to get out from under international sanctions as it tries to build up its domestic economy.

A look at Kim’s plate for the coming year:

The economy

This is Kim’s primary concern. He made that clear in his 2018 News Year’s address and his government has been hammering it home ever since.

In his first televised speech, at a military parade in 2012, Kim vowed the nation would never again have to tighten its belts, a reference to the economic hardships it has faced, including a disastrous famine in the 1990s.

While they remain isolated and unable to travel or experience foreign media freely, North Koreans are aware of the yawning prosperity gap between themselves, South Korea and China.

Kim has tried to address that by initiating infrastructure projects in major cities, building up the capital and allowing – if not overtly supporting – the spread of the market economy. What’s not clear is how far he is willing to go with the kind of fundamental, systemic reforms needed to really ensure sustainable growth.

North Korea has hinted it wants to join the World Trade Organization and be more a part of the global economic community. But that would also require some risky moves – like increased transparency and commitment to global rules and norms. A big question is how much control Kim is willing to relinquish in exchange for prosperity.

North Korea is entering the fourth year of a five-year economic plan that Kim announced with great fanfare at a rare congress of his ruling party in 2016.

If precedent is any indication, he will go into some detail outlining, sector by sector, the country’s successes so far and emphasising what remains to be done.

This part of the speech is usually couched in deliberately vague, broad or aspirational language and is directed at the domestic party leadership.

But if Kim is serious about change, this could be where he drops some important hints.

Is North Korea’s timeline denuclearise for real?

Nuclear arsenal

North Korea is still standing firmly behind the agreements it made with Trump at the Singapore summit. The problem is that North Korea’s interpretation of what they agreed to is at odds with that of the Trump administration.

Kim never agreed to unilaterally throw away his hard-won nuclear arsenal, which he maintains is a necessary deterrent to the threat of an attack by the United States.

The North’s moratorium on nuclear tests and long-range missile launches also is not part of the summit agreement and there is no explicit promise in the Singapore joint statement that the North will not continue producing or developing its missiles.

So while the missiles have stopped flying for now, there’s still a lot up in the air.

Kim agreed the North would “work toward the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula”. But from the North’s perspective, it must include the removal of what it has always claimed is the reason why it has nukes in the first place – the threat of a US nuclear attack. While not directly criticising Trump, a tactic it is likely to stick with until it sees the overall process as seriously off the rails, the North has tried to play him against his advisers while it pushes for security guarantees and sanctions relief.

The bottom line is that North Korea has not given up much since Singapore. And it doesn’t think Washington has, either.

Trump has said a second summit could be held soon. The New Year’s speech gives Kim a golden opportunity to set the goalposts and to try to further detach Trump from his advisers.

North Korea’s Kim agrees to ‘dismantle’ key missile test sites

Relations with South Korea

In contrast to Pyongyang’s dealings with Washington, relations between North and South Korea have seen a major thaw.

With three leaders’ summits in 2018 and dozens of other meetings, the Koreas have opened a liaison office in the North Korean border town of Kaesong, created border buffers and no-fly zones to reduce military tensions, and jointly surveyed North Korea’s outdated railways and roads with the goal of connecting them with the South.

They even vowed to make a bid to jointly host the 2032 Summer Olympics.

But Seoul cannot proceed without the removal of U.S.-led international sanctions. While President Moon Jae-in sees inter-Korean reconciliation as a crucial part of nuclear diplomacy, his enthusiasm for engagement has caused discomfort in Washington. Pyongyang, meanwhile, has already begun expressing its frustration with the slowdown in inter-Korean projects and demanded that Seoul break from Washington’s lead.

Some analysts expect Kim to further try to drive a wedge between the allies with a nationalistic call for stronger inter-Korean cooperation, while painting Washington as a bad-faith actor refusing to take corresponding measures to the North’s unilateral dismantlement of a nuclear test site and the suspension of nuclear and long-range missile tests.

A suspected malware attack affected major U.S. newspapers over the weekend.

In what was initially thought to be a server outage, the attack delayed distribution of Saturday’s Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune, according to the Times

SEE ALSO: Hacker uses internet meme to send hidden commands to malware

On Saturday afternoon, the company suspected that the attack had originated from outside of the U.S., but didn’t reveal any further detail about its origins or what evidence led to the belief it came from overseas.

“We believe the intention of the attack was to disable infrastructure, more specifically servers, as opposed to looking to steal information,” a source told the Times.

The attack also affected Tribune Publishing properties, who owned the Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union Tribune until June, when it was sold to biotech investor Patrick Soon-Shiong.

The Chicago Tribune said its print edition was published without paid death notices and classified ads, while other Tribune newspapers had a slimmed down version of the Saturday edition delivered on a Sunday.

A Tribune Publishing Company spokesperson said that “there is no evidence that customer credit card information or personally identifiable information has been compromised.”

A disruption to our print production systems caused delays in the delivery of some of our newspapers Saturday. We apologize to all of our readers for the inconvenience. https://t.co/KmVYE7FpNu

— Tribune Publishing Company (@tribpub) December 30, 2018

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Reuters it had knowledge of the situation.

“We are aware of reports of a potential cyber incident affecting several news outlets, and are working with our government and industry partners to better understand the situation,” DHS spokesperson Katie Waldman in a statement.

Malware attacks have become increasingly common among companies, crippling infrastructure and in one Alaskan case earlier this year, forcing employees to go back to typewriters and hand-write receipts.
