Nate Stanley’s 3 TDs Lift Iowa to 2019 Outback Bowl Win over Mississippi State

In a battle of two of the best defenses in the country, Iowa outlasted Mississippi State for a 27-22 victory in the 2019 Outback Bowl.

Nate Stanley threw three touchdown passes as the Hawkeyes earned their second straight bowl victory following a stretch of five losses in a row. The team will finish 9-4 thanks to three straight wins to end the season.

Mississippi State ends the year 8-5 in Joe Moorhead’s first season leading the program, while quarterback Nick Fitzgerald totaled two touchdowns in the loss.

Points were difficult to come by early in this one, which isn’t a surprise considering Mississippi State led the nation with just 12.0 points allowed per game. Iowa was nearly as good, ranking 11th with 17.4 points allowed per game.

There were only 542 offensive yards in this game, with the eventual winner only gaining 200. The Hawkeyes were held to negative-14 rushing yards in a win.

However, both teams were able to find ways to score thanks to big plays on either sides of the ball.

Iowa appeared to take control of the game in the second quarter when Nate Stanley threw two touchdown passes in a span of 53 seconds. Nick Easley got wide open for a 75-yard catch and run before Ihmir Smith-Marsette scored on the next drive following a quick fumble.

Easley also scored in the second half and finished with eight catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Dear Old Gold @DearOldGold

Nick Easley is having him quite the performance for his last game as a Hawkeye!

While the Hawkeyes built a 17-6 lead at halftime, Mississippi State used quick strikes to go ahead in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs scored twice in a span of 18 seconds, thanks in part to a fumbled kickoff by Iowa. Fitzgerald took advantage with an impressive 33-yard run into the end zone for the score:

Every time it seemed as though one side would pull away, the other came through with a game-changing play:

Pat Forde @YahooForde

Momentum has whipsawed the other way in Iowa-Miss State. That game is all over the place.

Of course, no play was bigger than the fourth-quarter interception in the end zone from Iowa’s Jake Gervase. Fitzgerald found Stephen Guidry for an apparent go-ahead touchdown, but the receiver couldn’t hold on, and it led to a game-changing turnover.

Tyler Horka @tbhorka

I think Stephen Guidry just lost the game for Mississippi State.

Mississippi State’s defense gave Fitzgerald another chance at a potential game-winning touchdown, but the offense couldn’t get beyond the 32-yard line before a turnover on downs.

Neither team looked comfortable offensively during the game, but the best players stepped up when needed to keep it an exciting battle throughout. Iowa simply made the better plays at the end, which was enough to come away with the win in the New Year’s Day bowl game.

Will there be a peaceful transfer of power in DRC?

Congolese president Joseph Kabila has been in power for nearly 18 years, but he has now agreed to step down.

Millions of voters went to the polls in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday to choose his successor after a delay of more than two years.

The votes are being counted, but both Kabila’s chosen candidate and the opposition are already claiming victory.

The election was marred by widespread irregularities, including complaints of vote rigging and violence.

The internet has been cut, in an apparent attempt to stop speculation about the results. And people in some areas didn’t get to vote because of fighting and an outbreak of the Ebola virus.

With provisional results expected to be announced this week, is the DRC about to embark on a new era?

President Obama tweets inspiring New Year’s message

Barack Obama doesn’t have to say much to inspire the masses. A simple message like the one the former president tweeted on New Year’s Day often does the trick.

“In 2018 people stepped up and showed up like never before,” Obama wrote. “Keep it up in 2019. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and I’ll be right there with you. Happy New Year, everybody!”

The replies are exactly what you’d expect, ranging from “Thank you for keeping your voice out there to give us a little bit of hope” to “It soothes my soul to hear from you, our last sane leader” to “You, sir, are a breath of fresh air.”

In 2018 people stepped up and showed up like never before. Keep it up in 2019. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and I’ll be right there with you. Happy New Year, everybody!

— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) January 1, 2019

Though Obama didn’t share a detailed list of what he hopes liberals can accomplish in 2019, one can only imagine it includes ending the government shutdown, denying President Trump funding for his border wall, tackling climate change, enacting federal gun safety legislation, and fielding strong contenders for the 2020 presidential election.

SEE ALSO: The youth activists who proved critics wrong in 2018

Even with Obama’s promise that he’ll be “right there with” people, that’s quite the slog ahead. And it feels particularly daunting to notice the contrast between Obama’s feel-good message and the barrage of New Year’s tweets from Trump, including a classic all caps post that began, “HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE HATERS AND THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA!”

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE HATERS AND THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA! 2019 WILL BE A FANTASTIC YEAR FOR THOSE NOT SUFFERING FROM TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME. JUST CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE, GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR OUR COUNTRY!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 1, 2019

In the same tweet, Trump also directed those “SUFFERING FROM TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME” to “JUST CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE.” Of course, because this is the internet, the phrase “calm down and enjoy the ride” began trending on Twitter, thanks in part to Trump critics who pointed out why it’s beyond bizarre to hear a president embrace that mantra as a governing philosophy.

“Just calm down and enjoy the ride” aptly expresses the spirit of an authoritarian leader speaking to what he hopes is a cowed citizenry and a passive populace. https://t.co/Wl8ClYIb4Y

— Bill Kristol (@BillKristol) January 1, 2019

If we’re choosing between “We’ve got a lot of work to do, and I’ll be right there with you,” and “JUST CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE,” we’ll take the former any day.

Ultima Thule is getting clearer, and it looks like a big bowling pin

It looks like a giant bowling pin.

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has sent back its closest view of the most distant world humanity has ever visited, Ultima Thule, a snapshot taken on December 31. From half a million miles out, Ultima still appears fuzzy, but the irregularly-shaped object is becoming increasingly clear.

The day prior, New Year’s Eve, Ultima was just comprised of a few pixels — so this is a notable improvement.

“Even though it’s a pixelated blob still, it’s a better pixelated blob,” New Horizons project scientist Hal Weaver said Tuesday at mission headquarters, located at Maryland’s Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

Scientists estimate that Ultima is about 22 miles long by 9 miles wide (35 by 15 kilometers). It’s spinning through space — from our perspective — like a propeller blade, Weaver said.

New Horizons, however, has already successfully flown just 2,200 miles from Ultima’s surface, precisely at 12:33 a.m. ET on January 1, 2019. Data from these close-up images are now traveling through the solar system, so the fuzzy “blob” will get profoundly detailed over the coming days, revealing the surface of this distant world.

Scientists at New Horizons’ headquarters are abuzz: Successful mission updates, which show the craft is safe and operating well, have been met with roaring cheers and standing ovations.

SEE ALSO: 2018 takes the podium as one of the hottest years on record. Let’s look deeper.

And for good reason. Ultima lies in a far-off group of objects, called the Kuiper Belt, that ring the solar system. Temperatures here approach absolute zero (minus 460 degrees Fahrenheit), which is as cold as it gets. Scientists suspect that these ancient objects have been preserved in relatively pristine condition since the beginnings of the still-forming solar system, some 4 billion years ago.

Seeing Ultima, then, is like witnessing our solar system origins, long before the first life even evolved on Earth.

“The Kuiper Belt is just a scientific wonderland,” Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, said on Sunday.

From the latest image, it still remains unclear if Ultima is actually two objects that are closely orbiting one another, or a single mass. But as of Tuesday morning, New Horizons scientists were betting on a single object.

“My money is on the single body,” said Weaver.

We’ll soon find out.

Google Assistant will now donate to your favorite charity

Donating money to a charity or nonprofit organization just got easier for people who use Google Assistant. The voice-activated program now responds to commands to “donate to a charity” or to “make a donation.” Google launched the feature last month, according to 9to5Google.

Users can donate to 501(c)(3) public charities in the U.S. Once Google Assistant receives the command to make a donation, the user can name the organization of their choice if they haven’t already, and the amount of their gift. Google prompts the user to finalize the donation and the money is then routed to Network for Good, a nonprofit that processes donations for charities.

“We hope that the simplicity and convenience of donating with the Google Assistant will encourage more people to give back to the causes they love,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement to Mashable.

SEE ALSO: Everything to consider before donating money

Google Assistant can only make donations if its payments feature is enabled by the user. 9to5Google reported that the new command works on several Android and Google Home speakers.

Google Assistant isn’t the only AI-powered virtual assistant capable of making donations. Amazon gave its Alexa app the same feature in April 2018.

Now that both Amazon and Google have streamlined the donation process, supporting your favorite charities is only a voice command away.

NASA spacecraft survives risky encounter with faraway dark world

An unmanned NASA spacecraft has sent a signal back to Earth that it has successfully made it through a risky flyby past the most distant planetary object ever studied, the US space agency said on Tuesday.

NASA rang in the New Year with a historic flyby of the farthest, and quite possibly the oldest, cosmic body ever explored by humankind – a tiny, distant world called Ultima Thule – in the hopes of learning more about how planets took shape.

A series of anxiously awaited “phone home” signals arrived after 10:30am (15:30 GMT), indicating that the spacecraft had made it, intact, through the risky, high-speed encounter.

“We have a healthy spacecraft,” said Alice Bowman, missions operations manager for the New Horizons spacecraft, as cheers erupted in the control rooms at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland.

About 10 hours earlier, NASA celebrated the New Year’s flyby, at 12:33am (05:33 GMT) when the New Horizons spacecraft aimed its cameras at the space rock 6.4 billion km away in a dark and frigid region of space known as the Kuiper Belt.

Images and data will start arriving later Tuesday, offering scientists the first up-close look at an ancient building block of planets, Bowman said.

Confirmed! @NASANewHorizons flew by the most distant object ever visited by a spacecraft. Congratulations to the New Horizons team, @JHUAPL and the Southwest Research Institute for making history yet again! pic.twitter.com/t47BOmo7c1

The flyby took place about a billion miles beyond Pluto, which was until now the most faraway world ever visited up close by a spacecraft.

Real-time video of the actual flyby was impossible, since it takes more than six hours for a signal sent from Earth to reach the spaceship, and another six hours for the response to arrive.

Hurtling through space at a speed of 51,200km an hour, the spacecraft aimed to make its closest approach within 3,520km of the surface of Ultima Thule.

Lead planetary scientist for New Horizons, Alan Stern, said Ultima Thule is unique because it is a relic from the early days of the solar system and could provide answers about the origins of other planets.

“The object is in such a deep freeze that it is perfectly preserved from its original formation,” he said.

“Everything we are going to learn about Ultima – from its composition to its geology to how it was originally assembled, whether it has satellites and an atmosphere and those kinds of things – are going to teach us about the original formation conditions of objects in the solar system.”

What does it look like?

Scientists are not sure what Ultima Thule looks like, whether it is cratered or smooth, or even if it is a single object or a cluster.

It was discovered in 2014 with the help of the Hubble Space Telescope, and is believed to be 19-32km in size.

A blurred and pixelated image released on Monday, taken from 1,920,000km away, has intrigued scientists because it appears to show an elongated blob, not a round space rock.

The spaceship was to collect 900 images over the course of a few seconds as it shaved by. Even clearer images should arrive over the next three days.

“Now it is just a matter of time to see the data coming down,” said deputy project scientist John Spencer of the Southwest Research Institute.

Scientists decided to study Ultima Thule with New Horizons after the spaceship, which was launched in 2006, completed its main mission of flying by Pluto in 2015, returning the most detailed images ever taken of the dwarf planet.

Stern said the goal is to take images of Ultima that are three times the resolution the team had for Pluto.
