Egypt demands CBS should not air interview with President Sisi

The Egyptian government has demanded that CBS should not air an interview with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that he gave to the US network’s investigative news programme, “60 Minutes”.

CBS said the information given by Sisi in the interview, such as denying the detention of political prisoners and admitting to closely cooperating with Israel, was “not the kind of news his government wanted broadcast”.

“The 60 Minutes team was contacted by the Egyptian ambassador shortly after and told the interview could not be aired,” the network said.

However, CBS said the segment, which they dubbed “The interview Egypt’s government doesn’t want on TV”  will be aired on Sunday at 7pm Eastern Time (12:00 GMT).

Interviewed by Scott Pelley, Sisi denied having political prisoners and “prisoners of opinion” in prison.

“There are no political prisoners in Egypt,” he said, his face shiny with sweat.

“We are trying to stand against extremists who impose their ideology on the people,” he continued. “Now they are subject to a fair trial, and it may take years but we have to follow the law.”

On political prisoners in Egypt

Sisi dismissed reports from international rights organisations such as Human Rights Watch that estimated Egypt has imprisoned as many as 60,000 political activists.

“I don’t know where they [HRW] got that figure,” he said.

The rights group had interviewed a former prisoner, relatives of detainees, and lawyers who had documented abusive conditions held in prisons, such as overcrowding, torture, sexual assault, and deaths in custody.

The most notorious of these prisons is the Tora maximum security jail, popularly known as “the Scorpion”.

The Egyptian president also admitted that his army has been closely collaborating with Israel in the Sinai Peninsula against armed fighters.

“That is correct,” he said. “We have a wide range of cooperation with the Israelis.”

In recent years, various rights groups have highlighted Egypt’s increasingly repressive policies against its own citizens, particularly its crackdown on freedom of expression.

“The security services have been ruthless in clamping down on any remaining political, social or even cultural independent spaces,” Amnesty International’s North Africa Campaigns Director Najia Bounaim said last year.

“These measures, more extreme than anything seen in former President Hosni Mubarak‘s repressive 30-year rule, have turned Egypt into an open-air prison for critics.”

Sisi came to power on the back of a popularly-backed military coup in 2013 that deposed former President Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected leader.

Will women win fight to worship in Hindu temple?

The state of Kerala has been at a standstill following violent protests against the lifting of a ban preventing women of reproductive age from entering one of Hinduism’s holiest temples – Sabarimala.

The Supreme Court made the ruling in September but conservative groups backed by India’s ruling party – the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – objected and blocked attempts by women to gain entrance.

On Wednesday, under the cover of darkness and escorted by police officers, two women walked in.

Protests began soon afterwards.

Hundreds of thousands of women have formed what they called The Women’s Wall – a 600-kilometre human chain – to raise awareness of their plight and to campaign for women’s rights.

GM unveils autonomous food-delivery program with DoorDash

It started with pizzas and Walmart groceries delivered in a self-driving car from Ford. Now robot-driven food is catching on with even more new companies and apps. GM’s Cruise is working with food delivery service DoorDash to bring your meal from a restaurant to your front door. It’s Cruise’s first foray into food delivery.

The two companies announced Thursday that “select customers” in the San Francisco area would soon get to experience autonomous food delivery from one merchant with one self-driving vehicle. More vehicles and restaurants are expected to join in the next six months. DoorDash didn’t specify which restaurant would kick off the autonomous deliveries, but it could be pizza again, like Ford’s Domino’s Pizza partnership.

This is part of Cruise’s self-driving testing in the city where it plans to have a ride-hailing service, like Uber, with self-driving cars by the end of this year. When someone orders a meal from DoorDash it could come in a Cruise car. Safety operators will still be in the front seats. The companies said grocery deliveries could be a future program.

In a blog post, DoorDash explained, “we’ve built a runner system to move orders from the merchant to the autonomous vehicle. Then, the customer will be notified when the autonomous vehicle is approaching the customer address.”

Cruise is frequently spotted throughout the city as it tests its autonomous Chevy Bolts. At the end of last year, Zoox became the first autonomous vehicle company in California to receive a permit to drive passengers around. It’s like Google’s self-driving car spinoff company, Waymo, that’s taxiing select riders in self-driving vehicles in the Phoenix area, except the California company can’t charge passengers for the rides and safety operators are required in the vehicle. So no true driverless rides yet.

Meanwhile at University of the Pacific’s Stockton campus, PepsiCo on Thursday announced the launch of a “snackbot,” which is exactly like it sounds. A robot that roves around dropping off snacks like chips, water, juice, and iced tea. By using an app, students can grab snacks stored in the robot. Bay Area-based Robby Technologies built the fleet of self-driving robots.

The cooler-like box on wheels is reminiscent of the exploding delivery robot seen on the UC Berkeley campus last month. Postmates also introduced Serve, a wide-eyed food delivery bot, in December.

The snackbots are here.

Ball don’t lie.

It appeared as if the Golden State Warriors would win Thursday’s Western Conference Finals rematch against the Houston Rockets. Officials missed Kevin Durant clearly being out of bounds when he saved a ball that led to Stephen Curry‘s go-ahead jumper in overtime, but James Harden had other ideas.

Harden drilled a deep three-pointer over two defenders in the final seconds, propelling the Rockets to a 135-134 victory over the defending champions at Oracle Arena. Durant’s potential game-winner on the other end rimmed out, and Houston won its sixth game in a row and moved to 11-1 in its last 12.

The reigning MVP has been the catalyst behind the red-hot play and notched a triple-double of 44 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds to go with his game-winner. He also connected on a tying three-pointer in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.

He now has 40-plus points in five straight games as he looks to continue pushing Houston up the standings and making a case for a second straight MVP trophy.

Tropical storm Pabuk edges closer to southern Thailand

A strengthening tropical storm is edging closer to southern Thailand, prompting thousands of people to seek shelter inland, suspending ferry services and closing a major airport.

Tropical storm Pabuk is forecast to make landfall on Friday evening in Nakhon Si Thammarat and bring torrential downpours and strong winds to more than a dozen other provinces in the south, home to one of the world’s biggest natural rubber plantations and several islands popular with domestic and foreign tourists.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, the airport was closed and authorities made rounds on Friday morning urging people to leave before roads are blocked, while in the Gulf of Thailand the winds accompanying the potentially damaging storm churned up high waves and gusts.

“The strong winds are forecast with waves up to three to five meters high in the Gulf and two to three meters high in the Andaman Sea. All ships (should) keep ashore,” the Thai Meteorological Department said in a statement early on Friday, adding that the storm had maximum winds of 80 kilometres per hour.

Officials expect the conditions to persist into Saturday.

Al Jazeera’s Florence Looi, reporting from the island of Koh Samui on Friday noon, said the effects of the incoming storm could be seen and felt in the holiday destination, where all flights and ferry services had been suspended.

“The waves are much more powerful than normal, they are reaching up to three metres and are coming much further inland,” she added.

Over the past few days, 6,176 people have been evacuated to shelters from Nakhon Si Thammarat as well as the provinces of Pattani, Songkhla and Yala, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has said.

‘Unusual storm’

Looi said Pabuk has been described as “unusual” because it is “taking place outside of the monsoon season for this part of the world”, noting that the last time something like this happened in Thailand was three decades ago.

“The good news is that forecasters say they do not anticipate the tropical storm to strengthen to a typhoon, but we are still expecting to see sustained rainfall possibly and very likely into Saturday, which means there is still a threat of flooding, landslides and mudslides in the southern provinces,” Looi added.

Photos posted on social media showed dark sky, very heavy rains and violent sea waves.

National energy company PTT Exploration and Production Pcl said it had suspended operations at Bongkot and Erawan, two of the country’s biggest gas fields in the Gulf of Thailand.

Looi said that more than 2,000 workers on offshore rigs have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“In some of the southern provinces, officials have also given the order to start releasing water from reservoirs to decrease the potential from flash floods,” she added.

‘Bachelor’ contestant puts on fake Australian accent, and people aren’t convinced

2016%2f09%2f16%2fe7%2fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde1lzex.0f9e7By Johnny Lieu

On a show like The Bachelor, it’s understandable that contestants need to do what they can to stand out.

With the 23rd season (!) of the popular reality show set to arrive on Jan. 7 on ABC, a promo was released on Thursday featuring a contestant named Bri.

SEE ALSO: 9 of the most irresponsible TV moments of 2018

Bri, less understandably, tries her hand at faking an Australian accent when she first meets Colton Underwood, who is the Bachelor in the upcoming season.

Bri’s accent starts as believable, but then begins to sound like a strange mix of a Scandinavian and Australian accent. Or maybe it’s South African.

Some people weren’t so convinced by the accent.

That’s the worst Aussie accent I’ve ever heard but okay

— Daphne (@daphnejanee) January 3, 2019

To be fair, she doesn’t say she’s Australian — rather that it’s just an accent — so she’s technically not lying, just engaging in a little sprinkle of deception pretty early in the game.

As per The Bachelor website, Bri is actually, shock and awe, a “model from Southern California.”

“Bri is much more than just a pretty face. She played soccer for eight years, enjoys hiking and camping, and loves to hit the snowboard slopes. Her biggest dating fear? Farting too loudly. (Don’t worry Bri, we won’t tell Colton.)” the bio reads.

Also, does she plan on keeping this accent on throughout the series? Guess that’s how they’ll get us watching, we suppose.

Twitter Loved Man City vs Liverpool

  • Dominic King @DominicKing_DM

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone just agreed that was a magnificent game of football, contested by two outstanding teams? Liverpool edgy first half, better at 4-2-3-1. Man City’s work was extraordinary, Bernado Silva and Fernandinho of the highest class. A pleasure to watch.

  • Rory Smith @RorySmith

This will ruin my mentions, I suspect, but what that game proved to me was that there’s not a vast amount between those two teams. City marginally better; be interesting to see if that translates to five more points than Liverpool over the course of the rest of the season.

  • Guillem Balague @GuillemBalague

No game in world matches #MCILIV in intensity, rhythm, collective work without the ball. Others might have more quality/chances. But fascinating seeing two of the top managers at work (subs could decide this). Impossible to take the eyes off it -just to write this tweet 😂

  • Guillem Balague @GuillemBalague

    More exciting than excellent

One team (City) aware they had to replace absentees or players not in form with work. Another one (Liverpool) so strong mentally that know this is JUST a defeat, nothing else

2 coaches that know any team could have won

    Great fun, that was

What a pulsating and mesmeric game betwn Liverpool and Man City…was at the edge of my seat. We fought a good fight the reds…hold your heads up high…a favor returned by City from last season…😁😁😁 #MCILIV

  • Socanalysis @SocanalysisHQ

Klopp should be proud of his team. Thought Liverpool were very good. Plenty of positives to take from the performance. Liverpool the only side in the last 18 months who go toe-to-toe with Man City in their clashes.

Two weeks ago, a deadly volcanic tsunami struck in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, catching residents by surprise.

Clouds have obscured people from capturing the aftermath, but earth observation company Planet Labs managed to capture high resolution images of the Anak Krakatau volcano.

SEE ALSO: Explaining the deadly volcanic tsunami that hit Indonesia

The volcano’s cone collapsed and triggered a landslide underwater on Dec. 22, leading to huge waves that weren’t detected by tsunami warning systems.

As noted by the American Geophysical Union, the pictures show how much the volcano has changed after the disaster, where a bay has formed from the collapse, along with high levels of sediment in the water surrounding the island.

The first image is from Dec. 17, before the volcano’s collapse, while the second image is from Dec. 30, after the landslide.

    No. 8 Baylor Snaps No. 1 UConn Women’s 126-Game Regular-Season Win Streak

    Ray Carlin/Associated Press

The eighth-ranked Baylor Lady Bears upset the previously unbeaten No. 1 Connecticut Huskies 68-57 on Thursday night at Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.

Kalani Brown led the way for Baylor, scoring 22 points and grabbing 17 boards. Juicy Landrum’s three-point shooting was also key as the junior guard was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc en route to an 11-point night.

UConn hadn’t lost a regular-season game since Nov. 17, 2014, when it fell to Stanford in overtime.

Defense has been Baylor’s calling card all season. Entering Thursday, the Lady Bears were 20th in points allowed (54.9) and first in opponent field-goal percentage (29.5).

Because of the 6’7″ Brown, Baylor presented UConn with a difficult matchup inside as well. True freshman Olivia Nelson-Ododa is the only player taller than 6’3″ on the Huskies.

The final numbers tell the story of the game.

The Lady Bears held UConn to 29.4 percent shooting. The Huskies also shot just 4-of-20 in the fourth quarter, missing 11 of their 13 three-point attempts.

On offense, Baylor relied heavily on its inside game and getting to the basket. The Lady Bears had a 52-10 advantage in paint scoring. The Huskies had no answer for Brown, who shot 10-of-16.

    Baylor Lady Bears @BaylorWBB

Count em up… Kalani Brown with 2⃣0⃣points as we head down the stretch! #SicUConn #FinishStrong https://t.co/3w9iU6d4M0

Baylor hasn’t reached the Final Four since 2012, falling in the Elite Eight on four occasions. Lady Bears fans know they can’t take anything for granted in March, but this squad clearly has the pieces on its best night to advance to the national semifinals.

Kim Mulkey’s team showed its mettle by fending off UConn’s comeback attempts in the second half.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Christyn Williams trimmed the Lady Bears’ lead to four points, 51-47, heading into the fourth quarter, and then, Crystal Dangerfield brought the Huskies to within six points, 61-55, with three minutes, 31 seconds left in the game. On both occasions, Baylor didn’t panic and widened the gap on UConn.

Although losing one game isn’t a reason for panic in Storrs, this game illustrated two clear issues for the Huskies.

They’re going to have a hard time against teams with dominant post players, and a matchup with Baylor or Mississippi State and Teaira McCowan is entirely plausible in the NCAA tournament.

UConn’s bench didn’t show up either. Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier combined for 28 points, which might have been enough on a different night. Instead, the trio of Nelson-Ododa, Mikayla Coombs and Batouly Camara combined for zero points off the bench. As good as the Huskies’ starting five is, their lack of depth could be their undoing.
