How to watch the 2019 Golden Globes online (or without a TV)

Want to watch this year’s Golden Globe Awards but not sure how since you’re too cheap to pony up for cable? Have no fear. There are many ways to watch the Golden Globes this year without a cable subscription — or hell, even without a TV!

Awards season officially kicks off with the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 6 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom in California, where there are sure to be some nail biters: Dick Cheney biopic Vice leads the nomination count with six, including Best Motion Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Amy Adams, and Best Actor for Christian Bale, while A Star Is Born, The Favourite, and Green Book are following the pack with five nominations each. On the TV side, Homecoming and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel both have three nominations a piece. (Click here for a complete list of all the nominations.)

SEE ALSO: What to watch on Hulu in January 2019

If you want to find out who will win during this year’s Golden Globes ceremony (not through Twitter spoilers), you’ll have to tune in at your local NBC station at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST to watch live. Killing Eve and Grey’s Anatomy star Sandra Oh and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg will co-host the broadcast with all sorts of stars and celebrities expected to attend.

If you don’t have an over-the-air HD antenna to watch NBC (we’ll explain that later), you can always watch the Golden Globe live on NBC’s live stream on their website and mobile app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets with a cable TV provider login from Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T U-verse, and others.

However, if you don’t have access to broadcast channels, you can still catch the Golden Globe Awards with a number of streaming services that also offer live TV. And with the free trials they offer, you won’t have to pay a cent — just make sure to cancel before you’re charged.

Here’s how to watch the Golden Globes without cable:

1. Sling TV — Free trial available, $25/month

One of our favorite streaming services as of late, Sling TV offers an impressive selection of channels at a price point that most competitors don’t come close to touching. NBC is offered in Sling’s “The Best of Live TV” Blue package, which you can try out with a seven-day free trial for the Golden Globes. Other channels in this package are Discovery, Adult Swim, and FX.

If you’re really loving it when your trial ends, you can subscribe to Sling TV for just $25/month. Plus, get a free Roku Express when you prepay for two months of Sling TV.

2. Hulu with Live TV — Free trial available, $39.99/month

Already love Hulu? Here’s how to make it even better. Unlike Netflix, Hulu offers a live TV option that works on nearly any device to add over 50 live channels to your Hulu library. NBC is included for your Golden Globes streaming, which you can watch with the free trial. Note: Viacom channels like Nickelodeon and Comedy Central are not available, but you’re still getting a decent handful of options for the price.

If you’re really loving it when your trial ends, you can subscribe to Hulu with Live TV for $39.99/month.

3. YouTube TV — Free trial available, $40/month

Enhance your “staying up until 3 a.m. watching dumb videos” experience with YouTube’s live TV add-on. As of now, only one package exists, but it’s a good one. There are over 60 channels including NBC, with niche channels we don’t see much otherwise and premium channels that can be added for an extra fee. For the variety plus the free unlimited DVR, it’s a stellar deal.

If you’re really loving it when your trial ends, you can subscribe to YouTube TV for $40/month.

4. PlayStation Vue — Free trial available, starting at $44.99/month

If you care about premium channels like HBO and Showtime, PlayStation’s live TV subscription will be your heaven. Vue offers four packages ranging from 50 to 100 channels, streaming on five devices at once, and extra customization options – so though it’s one of the priciest, it’s not for nothing. Of course, you won’t have to pay for anything during the five-day free trial, and NBC is available in the lowest-tier “Access” package.

If you’re really loving it when your trial ends, you can subscribe to PlayStation Vue starting at $44.99/month.

5. DirecTV Now — Free trial available, $40/month

Possibly the biggest and baddest in the game, DirecTV Now is DirecTV’s no-satellite-needed live TV service that offers the biggest number of channels — so you’ll be getting the royal treatment during your seven-day trial. There are four packages available and it can get pricey out there, but for the Golden Globes, you’ll only need the lowest-tier plan that includes NBC and 65 other channels.

If you’re really loving it when your trial ends, you can subscribe to DirecTV Now starting at $40/month.

6. fuboTV — Free trial available, $44.99/month

For movie junkies who double as sports obsessives, fuboTV’s sports-heavy packages are unbeatable. Though FuboTV is ideal for the avid sports watcher with niche interests, there are also all of the traditional channels that the rest of the household will want, like HGTV, SYFY, and of course, NBC. There’s only one package to choose from, so you’ll want to the seven-day trial to make sure it’s what you want.

If you’re really loving it when your trial ends, you can subscribe to fuboTV starting at $44.99/month.

7. An HD antenna — $27.59

Image: U MUST HAVE

If the free trial thing sounds like too much work for a single award show (or if you’ve already taken advantage of them with too many fake alternate emails), an HD antenna is a risk-free solution that will last way longer than a seven-day trial. A must-have for any cord cutter, these flat devices simply hang on the wall or a nearby window and pick up over-the-air channels like ABC, CBS FOX, and NBC, all for free.

Amazon has an overwhelming selection, but this one from U MUST HAVE has over 2,000 five-star ratings and is budget-friendly at just $27.95.

Jimmy Butler Rumors: Execs Think SG Takes Free-Agent Meetings Amid 76ers Drama

LOS ANGELES, CA - JAN 01: Jimmy Butler (23) of the Philadelphia 76ers rests during a game on January 01, 2019 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Chris Elise/Getty Images

A report from Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN on Friday indicated there is some tension between Philadelphia 76ers wing Jimmy Butler and head coach Brett Brown behind the scenes, namely regarding Butler’s offensive role.

That calls into question whether Butler, whom the Minnesota Timberwolves traded to the 76ers earlier this season, will stay in Philadelphia long term. He has a player option for 2019-20 but can opt out of his deal after this season.

Shelburne and Wojnarowski offered takes from other teams regarding Butler’s future, in addition to providing additional comments: “Rival teams believe Butler will eventually decide to take meetings with interested suitors in July. Butler’s preference has been to sign a more lucrative deal to remain with the Sixers, but it’s clear that there are issues to be worked out before that comfort level fully exists.”

The 29-year-old is averaging 18.0 points on 46.2 percent shooting in 21 games for the 25-14 76ers, who are fourth in the Eastern Conference.

The 76ers have gone 15-6 with him on the floor (and just 10-8 without), so it’s not as if his presence is putting the team’s season on the brink.

However, Butler went from the Chicago Bulls‘ franchise player to second-fiddle to Karl-Anthony Towns in Minnesota. Now his footing in the Philadelphia offense is even further from No. 1, as two 76ers score more points per game (Joel Embiid and JJ Redick) while point guard Ben Simmons runs the offense.

That could naturally cause some frustration, but Shelburne and Wojnarowski also provided some insight on offensive specifics:

“Butler has expressed a desire to teammates that he hopes to play in more traditional pick-and-roll and isolation sets, rather than trying to find his place in the Sixers’ free-flowing offense, league sources said. In searching for answers, Butler has met privately with Brown and his coaching staff, as well as general manager Elton Brand, league sources told ESPN.”

Butler’s issue is that this team is being built around Simmons and Embiid, two prized first-round picks who are 22 and 24 years old, respectively. Embiid is signed through 2023, while Simmons is signed through 2020 (he’s a restricted free agent after that season).

Brown and general manager Elton Brand are going to build around those two and do what they think is best, especially if Butler could hypothetically skip town after this season.

Still, any tension behind the scenes could be much ado about nothing…for now. The 76ers are right in the thick of the Eastern Conference race and sit just 2.5 games back of Milwaukee for the No. 1 seed. Butler’s tenure with the team isn’t even two months old, and when he’s at his best, he’s one of the game’s greatest two-way players.

If more drama is reported later in the year and the 76ers are sliding, however, then the alarm bells can be rung.

Supreme Court to take on partisan gerrymandering this year

The U.S. Supreme Court

If the Supreme Court rules that both maps in Maryland and North Carolina must be redrawn before the 2020 elections, it could boost Republicans to recapture one Western Maryland seat. | Eric Baradat/AFP/Getty Images

Legal

The court will hear arguments over congressional maps in Maryland and North Carolina that lower courts have struck down.

The Supreme Court will grapple with the legality of partisan gerrymandering in March when it hears arguments challenging congressional-district maps in two states.

The court announced Friday it would consider cases from Maryland and North Carolina after lower federal courts threw out the congressional maps in both states, ruling that they were so gerrymandered to favor one party that they violated the constitutional rights of voters. The high court will consider whether to uphold those rulings and order new maps drawn for the 2020 elections in those states.

Story Continued Below

Federal judges in Maryland tossed the state’s congressional map in November after Republicans sued, claiming Democrats went too far when they altered the lines of a district in Western Maryland to defeat the then-Republican incumbent. Since redrawing the map before the 2012 election, Democrats have held a 7-to-1 advantage in the state’s congressional delegation, after entering the redistricting process with six members, to Republicans’ two.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, a lower court chucked that state’s congressional map last August, ruling that Republicans violated voters’ rights in drawing the lines. But even though the court struck down the map, it said it was too late to draw new lines for the 2018 elections, which were held under the old lines. As they had in 2016, Democrats won only three of the state’s 13 congressional districts, though the result in the state’s 9th District is currently tied up in court following allegations that a Republican campaign contractor improperly collected absentee ballots.

If the Supreme Court rules that both maps must be redrawn before the 2020 elections, it could boost Republicans to recapture the Western Maryland seat formerly held by Republican Roscoe Bartlett, who was defeated by Democrat John Delaney under the new lines in 2012. The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. David Trone, who won last November following Delaney’s retirement from Congress to run for president.

Any Republican gain in Maryland, however, would likely be offset by losses in North Carolina, a swing state where Republicans have held wide advantages in the congressional delegation all decade long. A new map could create a number of new Democratic seats.

The March arguments will be the latest instance of the Supreme Court wrestling with just how far politicians can go in drawing political maps that favor one party over others. In its previous term, the court heard arguments in the Maryland case and another case from Wisconsin over how much gerrymandering is too much.

But rather than decide whether gerrymandering violates voters’ constitutional rights, the high court punted the cases back to lower courts.

Though these cases feature defendants asking the Supreme Court to overturn rulings that struck down gerrymandered congressional maps, good-government groups on Friday sounded a hopeful note that the court would affirm that partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional.

“Now that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear this case, we are hopeful that the court will set a standard that can reign in partisan gerrymandering once and for all,” said Celina Stewart, director of advocacy and litigation at the League of Women Voters. “There is no better time to establish a process, with the 2020 Census approaching — which will guide the next round of redistricting and ensure district lines are drawn in a manner that reflects voting populations, not the politicians in power.”

Timothée Chalamet’s Return, Gucci Selfies, And More We Need To See At The 2019 Golden Globes

Getty Images

The Golden Globes are generally a good time for everyone involved. (Unless you were one of the five all-male nominees in the Best Director category last year.) Not as stuffy and coveted as the Oscars and Emmys, nor as predictable and safe as the Grammys, the Golden Globes have a reputation of being awards season’s biggest party — and for good reason: It’s the one night of the year where TV people (who are really just happy to be there) get to mix and mingle with A-list movie stars while waiting in line at the open bar.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is known for honoring newcomers — which I guess is pretty predictable of them — but it ultimately makes for a show where anything can happen. (Remember when Aaron Taylor-Johnson won the Golden Globe for his supporting performance in Nocturnal Animals? No one saw that one coming.) There’s also not a lot of crossover between the HFPA, a group of international entertainment industry folks, and the Academy, so while taking home a freshly redesigned Golden Globe may give an Oscar hopeful momentum, it’s certainly not indicative of a win.

Still, it’s still an excuse for film and television’s elite to dress up, take selfies, and present each other with shiny statuettes. This year, nominee Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg are at the helm of Hollywood’s tipsiest award show, and they’re planning a “crazy-pants” ceremony.

That being said, here are some of things we’re looking forward to seeing at the 76th Annual Golden Globes this Sunday, January 6.

  1. The cast of Pose owning the red carpet

The category is… red carpet glamour! FX’s groundbreaking drama Pose is nominated for Best Television Series in the drama category, while scene-stealer Billy Porter is up for Best Actor — so prepare for this mesmerizing cast to turn the red carpet into their own personal ballroom for the big event. Sparkle! Lace! Tulle! Beading! Diamonds! Nothing is out of the realm of possibility for stars MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, and Tony-winning Porter.

But they better slay on the way to the podium to accept their Golden Globe. After all, the HFPA love to be first, and since Pose missed the eligibility deadline for the Emmys, it makes sense that these foreign critics would want to be the first to crown this Ryan Murphy gem victorious. And there isn’t a more deserving show in the running.

  2. The return of Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet didn’t walk away a winner on Oscar night last year, but that didn’t matter; he had already won awards season, endearing himself to practically everyone — on Twitter and off. He became a heartthrob seemingly overnight, and now he’s back on the awards season campaign trail for his devastating supporting performance in Beautiful Boy. The Supporting Actor category is perhaps the most stacked of the night, so the young actor’s chances of walking away a winner are slim, but — again — the ceremony hasn’t even started and it’s safe to say that Timothée Chalamet has already won the night. He’ll win in the eyes and hearts of the internet the moment he steps onto the carpet, dressed in an impeccably tailored suit, with his mom in tow.

    Getty Images

  3. Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg’s opening monologue

After stealing the Emmys with their undeniable charisma, Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg are taking the reins at this year’s Globes. It’s a fun pairing, if only because of the unpredictable nature of it. Samberg’s previously hosted the Emmys, while Oh is the first Asian American to host a major award show — which is really more embarrassing for us as a society than it is remarkable. As for what to expect from their show? It’s all a little unknown, which makes it all the more exciting. But there is one thing Oh said she has no interest in: Trump jokes. “What I’m interested in is pointing to actual real change,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I want to focus on that ’cause people can pooh-pooh Hollywood all they want — and there is a lot to pooh-pooh, sure — but we also make culture. How many gazillions of people have seen Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians? That changes things.” So prepare for a celebratory kick-off to awards season.

  4. And the return of Mama Oh

Here’s hoping Oh’s parents once again grace us with their regal presence. Oh’s mother wore a traditional Korean hanbok to the Emmys, where her daughter was nominated for her lead performance in Killing Eve — the first Asian woman to be nominated in the category. Will Oh’s eomma show up to the Globes in another hanbok? Or does she have something else up her delicate sleeve? (TBH, this is all I really care about when it comes to the Globes.)

  5. Lady Gaga’s acceptance speech(es)

Lady Gaga looks poised to win not one but two categories at this Sunday’s ceremony. It’s no secret that the chanteuse has been campaigning hard for that Oscar this awards season for her lead role in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born — and the HFPA love stars — so don’t be surprised if Gaga walks away a winner for both Best Original Song (for “Shallow”) and Best Actress in the drama category. After all, the Globes already awarded Mother Monster back in 2015 for her gory stint on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story, so she’s clearly a HFPA favorite. With the likelihood of her winning at an all-time high, we just have to be emotionally prepared to hear some variation of “there can be 100 people in a room and 99 of them don’t believe in you but all it takes is one.” Oh, and for the tears.

  6. Everything’s Gucci for Elsie Fisher

If the Golden Globes does not give us a photo of Eighth Grade star Elsie Fisher making her iconic “Gucci” symbol on the red carpet, then what are we even doing here? Bonus points if Fisher snags a selfie with her fellow nominees, and they’re all doing it. Olivia Colman and Emily Blunt would be so down!

  7. Bill Hader’s very awkward acceptance speech for Barry

Despite the HFPA’s undying love for 12-time Globes nominee and five-time winner Michael Douglas, Bill Hader still has a good shot at taking home the trophy for his disturbing HBO “comedy” Barry. Sure, the show is great, but he should win because his acceptance speeches are always succinct and a tiny bit awkward — a perfect, meme-able mix. When he accepted the Emmy last year, he simply said “I did not think this was going to happen” and then thanked his cast. Simple! Sweet! A little sweaty! Other white men, please take notes.

The 4 generations meme is the wholesome energy we want in 2019

2018%2f04%2f02%2f74%2fheadshot.edeb7By Morgan Sung

2019 is already off to a good start, meme-wise.

Chinese kids are showing off some wholesome family love on TikTok with the four generations meme. Moms, and their moms, and their moms all make an appearance, and it can’t get any cuter.

SEE ALSO: Soothing places online to escape the hellhole that is 2018

For the meme, kids call out to their parents, who pop into frame. Their parents call out to the children’s grandparents, who call out to their parents, the children’s great-grandparents.

Cue the most adorable old people grins.

Are you ugly crying? I’m ugly crying.

Here’s an incredibly perfect compilation of happy families showing each other off for a whole three minutes and eight seconds.

Other Twitter users fell in love with the meme, too.

Some were still mourning their grandparents.

How dare they flex their living great grandparents on me like this

Pottermore recently resurfaced a wizarding world fun fact that has Harry Potter fans losing it on Twitter. Pottermore reminded fans – or in most cases, informed them – that before plumbing, wizards used to “relieve themselves” literally anywhere and then magically vanish any excrement.

…oh.

This fun-slash-frightening fact depending on your perspective comes from the Pottermore page about the Chamber of Secrets, which, if you recall, is only accessible via ancient plumbing channels.

The tidbit comes as a shock to many because you realize that the world is a wizard’s toilet. What about wiping? What about their clothes?

What’s hilarious about this information is that it is probably in Hogwarts, A History and Hermione read that and still decided she wanted to go to this school 😭 https://t.co/6VGWqVr8CE

And an obvious snag in this method of magical mess-cleaning: What about magical children too young to vanish their business? Harry and his classmates don’t encounter a Vanishing Spell until their fourth year of school, which feels extremely late to learn how to clean your own shit. Perhaps the Hogwarts curriculum prioritized this spell more before toilets.

Rick Pitino Reportedly UCLA Boosters’ Top Target for Head Coach Job

If UCLA boosters get their way, Rick Pitino will be the next head coach for the Bruins basketball team.

Per ForbesAdam Zagoria, multiple “influential” UCLA boosters are targeting the Basketball Hall of Famer to take over the program.

Casey Wasserman, whom Zagoria noted had a hand in the hiring of Chip Kelly as football coach, is among the boosters pushing for Pitino to be hired.

UCLA is in the market for a new head coach after firing Steve Alford on Monday after a four-game losing streak dropped the team’s record to 7-6.

Pitino hasn’t coached in the United States since being fired by Louisville in October 2017. The 66-year-old lost his job after being implicated in a pay-for-play investigation conducted by the FBI that resulted in four assistant coaches at four different schools and an Adidas executive being arrested.

Panathinaikos B.C. of the EuroLeague hired Pitino as its head coach in December. He won his first game with the team on Dec. 28.

Does social media use cause depression?

The extent to which social media has embedded itself into the daily lives of people cannot be understated.

A UK study has looked specifically at how teenagers are affected, and the differences between how they project themselves online and the unattainable images and fantasies they are bombarded with.

Researchers at University College London studied almost 11,000 14-year-olds.

They say teenage girls are twice as likely to show depressive symptoms as boys.

But twice as many girls as boys use social media for more than three hours a day.

The study found that can lead to mood swings, a drop in confidence, and poor sleeping habits.

So what’s the connection between social media use and depression?

Trump: Shutdown has ‘higher purpose than next week’s pay’

Donald Trump

President Donald Trump repeatedly brushed off questions about federal workers who could miss paychecks, instead reiterating his belief that the country needs stronger border security. | Jacquelyn Martin/AP Photo

Thousands of federal employees are on furlough during the partial government shutdown, but President Donald Trump said Friday that it’s for a good cause.

“This really does have a higher purpose than next week’s pay,” Trump said during a news conference.

Story Continued Below

Speaking to reporters shortly after meeting with congressional leaders to discuss negotiating an end to the nearly two-week shutdown, Trump repeatedly brushed off questions about federal workers who could miss paychecks, hammering instead his talking point that the country needs stronger border security measures. The shutdown stems from Trump’s insistence that funding legislation to reopen the government include billions of dollars for physical barriers at the border with Mexico, which Democrats who control the House have refused to approve.

When asked whether there would be any safety net for federal employees who don’t get paid because of the shutdown, Trump said: “Well, the safety net is going to be having a strong border because we’re going to be safe.”

Of landlords expecting rent from federal employees, he said he’d “encourage them to be nice and easy” on their tenants.

The remarks also came as The Washington Post reported that at the same time thousands of federal workers were going without pay, hundreds of senior Trump political appointees were set to get raises of about $10,000 a year. The raises are the result of Congress failing to renew a cap on those appointees’ pay, allowing their salaries to go up, the Post reported.

When asked whether he would tell his appointees not to accept the raise, Trump said he would consider it.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said after the news conference that the administration is “exploring options to prevent this from being implemented while some federal workers are furloughed. Congress can easily take care of this by funding the government and securing our borders.”

Trump said his administration would continue meeting through the weekend to determine how to secure funding for the wall, one of his central campaign promises. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly said Democrats would not give in to demands for more funding, and she said her meeting with Trump on Friday was “contentious.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump told Democrats on Friday that he was willing to extend the shutdown for “months or even years” to get the funding he wanted, an account Trump confirmed during the news conference.

The president said a resolution could come soon, though, and he added that he believes federal employees are fine with the shutdown continuing.

“I think if you ever really looked at those people,” Trump said, “I think they would say, ‘Mr. President, keep going.’”
