Are the Colts Quietly the Best Team in the AFC?

A little luck is helpful. A lot of luck will take someone far. A dominant Andrew Luck turns the Indianapolis Colts from a dangerous postseason opponent into the AFC’s most complete squad.

The healthy and calm-in-the-pocket version of Luck seen during Saturday’s 21-7 victory over the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium harkens back to the once-in-a-lifetime quarterback prospect who took the league by storm.

Luck no longer needs to be the franchise’s focal point behind a dominant offensive line, a potent running game and a fundamentally sound defense. But he still can be if needed. All of these factors coalescing at the same time make this arguably the best Colts team in the post-Peyton Manning era, which is surprising when you consider this year’s squad started 1-5 before winning 10 of its next 11 contests.

The fact the Colts even reached this point is amazing.

No one knew if Luck was even capable of playing this season after missing all of the 2017 campaign with a shoulder injury. Frank Reich wasn’t supposed to be the head coach, either. A last-minute change of heart from Josh McDaniels forced the franchise to change direction and hire Reich. The organization had already signed three assistant coaches at McDaniels’ request, and they had to be assimilated into Reich’s staff.

“When we hired (Frank Reich) I said, ‘How could we have be so stupid?’ owner Jim Irsay said, per the Indianapolis Star‘s Zak Keefer. “He should’ve been our first choice.”

Somehow, it all worked out in the Colts’ favor. And it’s only getting better.

Luck, in particular, is living up to what could have been considered unfair expectations after being touted as the best quarterback since Manning or John Elway. He played extremely well before his bum shoulder but developed bad habits due to poor protection, lack of a running game and injuries.

Now, Luck’s best version fits into a young and talented roster.

The 29-year-old signal-caller posted career highs this season in completion percentage (67.3) and quarterback rating (98.7). He completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 222 yards, two touchdowns and an interception Saturday. His improved efficiency can be seen in the precise nature of his throws from the pocket or on the move.

Two specific throws highlight both areas.

The end-zone angle shows how Luck makes a difficult throw look easy. First, he adjusted his launch point to avoid pressure. He still took the hit, but not before he uncorked the pass. The ball landed gently as a feather in the awaiting arms of Hilton between three Texans defenders.

Now, watch as Luck rolls to his left to avoid pressure and allow his receiver to become available:

Neither results in a touchdown, yet both helped extend drives.

Sometimes a quarterback just needs to drop, hit his back step, rip a pass to the sideline from the opposite hash and stop the opponent’s momentum like Luck did in the fourth quarter to Hilton:

Two major differences exist in Luck’s game today compared to ghosts of seasons past. His throwing motion is much tighter after reteaching himself how to throw a football as part of the rehabilitation process. Also, the quarterback is far more comfortable with his offensive line, and his footwork is greatly improved, as former offensive line coach Paul Alexander noted:

Paul Alexander @CoachPaulAlex

ANDREW LUCK, without a doubt, is setting up not as deep this year. I’ve studied him extensively. His footwork is shorter and he’s easier to protect. This is a qk 7 step play action drop. Lots of QBs end up at 10 yards depth … only to their demise. @CaptAndrewLuck #Colts https://t.co/xUUeN1xzCG

A confident quarterback in the pocket tends to be the result of a reliable offensive front. The Colts’ offensive line developed throughout the season into one of the league’s best. The ripple effects can be felt throughout the team’s entire approach.

Everything starts with All-Pro rookie Quenton Nelson. The fact a guard deserves so much recognition says it all, but a closer inspection shows a truly special talent. Former NFL offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger succinctly summed up Nelson’s year-long performance with one play:

Rich Ohrnberger @ohrnberger

Colts LG Quenton Nelson is a savant..

-Varies his pass sets to avoid being “set-up”
-Joins hips with adjacent linemen and moves bodies on DBL teams
-Athletic puller/zone blocker
-Nasty attitude…plays low and mean.

..here he is vs Jadeveon Clowney https://t.co/DxuzQpHqgC

Nelson’s greatest asset isn’t overwhelming upper-body strength, advanced technique or movement skills; it’s that his attitude is infectious. For years, the Colts featured one of the league’s softest fronts. He’s now must-watch television.

However, he added to an offensive line with a few pieces already in place. Former first-round pick Ryan Kelly (who returned from injury Saturday), left tackle Anthony Castonzo and right guard Mark Glowinski all had significant starting experience. The final piece fell into place when fellow rookie Braden Smith took over at right tackle.

This group can impose its will even against a defense featuring J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney

The Colts set two franchise postseason rushing records Saturday, with Marlon Mack running for 148 yards and the team managing 200 yards. More importantly, the Colts put the game away by keeping it on the ground with six straight running plays.

The Texans didn’t allow a single 100-yard rusher all season and led the league by allowing a paltry 3.4 yards per carry. Indianapolis came in and averaged 5.7 yards.

“In playoff football, how do you win games?” Reich asked in his postgame speech. “You dominate up front. That’s playoff football … It’s complementary.

Efficient quarterback play behind a strong offensive line and capable ground-and-pound approach is even more successful if the defense isn’t a sieve.

Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has been a wizard working with the available talent and converting a 3-4 scheme under Chuck Pagano into a sound Cover 2-inspired approach as one of the league’s most prolific zone schemes. The Colts were second to only the Los Angeles Chargers in using zone coverage on 74 percent of regular-season plays, according to the telecast.

Eberflus forced Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson to beat the Colts. The second-year signal-caller couldn’t do it. He dinked and dunked throughout the contest and relied more on his athleticism to get anything going in the second half.

Strong fundamentals coupled with taking opportune risks helped shut down the Texans offense.

During Houston’s final fourth-down play, the Colts employed a five-man blitz. Linebacker Anthony Walker came on a delayed A-gap dog, which drew the offensive interior’s attention. Cornerback Kenny Moore blitzed from the slot, drove Texans running back Lamar Miller into Watson, knocked the quarterback off balance and the ball fell short of its intended target.

The league’s 11th-ranked defense isn’t littered with recognizable talent, but they fly to the football while playing with sound fundamentals.

All of these factors are in the Colts’ favor and the entire package can’t be found on any other AFC squad. The Chiefs, whom Indianapolis faces next weekend at Arrowhead Stadium, aren’t nearly as good on defense. Philip Rivers isn’t as mobile playing behind a more susceptible offensive front. The Ravens don’t have much of a downfield passing attack. The Patriots aren’t as explosive, either, after losing Josh Gordon to an indefinite suspension.

Luck will lead the way, but he no longer needs to shoulder the load.

Brett Brown: I Don’t Think Jimmy Butler Crossed Line During Heated Film Session

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown, left, talks with Jimmy Butler (23) during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Charlotte Hornets in Charlotte, N.C., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018. (AP Photo/Chuck Burton)

Chuck Burton/Associated Press

Philadelphia 76ers star Jimmy Butler reportedly “aggressively challenged” head coach Brett Brown recently, but it doesn’t appear as though he crossed any lines with his approach.

Brown addressed the matter Saturday, per the Bucks County Courier Times’ Tom Moore:

“As I’ve said to the team a moment ago, I’ve had many meetings with Jimmy. In the film session, I didn’t think it went over the line. If it did, I would’ve addressed it.

“He wanted to be in more pick and rolls. That was true. My job is to make this work.”

Brown added, per The Athletic’s Michael Lee, that he views that matter as a “non-story” and that any criticism of his player is “unfair.”

ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Friday that Butler spoke out against Brown’s system during a recent film session in Portland. Witnesses of the confrontation believed the incident was not typical of a player-coach exchange, with some calling it “disrespectful.”

Per Shelburne and Wojnarowski, Brown did not take exception to the matter, noting it was within the boundaries of the relationship the two had established. And that’s a sentiment he echoed on Saturday.

Of course, Butler may not get the benefit of the doubt in some people’s eyes after the way he forced his way out of Minnesota last year.

Butler’s trade request went public just before the Timberwolves were set to open training camp. He was given permission to skip the preseason as he sought a trade, but when no deal was reached, he reported to the team—and that’s when the real show began.

Butler was immediately involved in a heated practice upon his return to the Timberwolves, which Wojnarowski reported included Butler telling Minnesota general manager Scott Layden, “You f–king need me, Scott. You can’t win without me.”

Minnesota eventually wound up trading Butler to Philadelphia on Nov. 12.

While internal turmoil could prove problematic for a team with championship aspirations, Brown was quick to point out the four-time All-Star plays a key role in the Sixers’ success.

“Jimmy Butler makes us better,” Brown said Saturday, per Moore. “There is no denying that.”

Philadelphia was 8-6 before acquiring Butler; it is 17-8 since the trade, as Butler has averaged 18.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.9 steals per game in 21 appearances.

It’s important to remember Butler can be a free agent at the conclusion of the season. If the Sixers want to re-sign him, keeping him happy is key.

The Golden State Warriors have struggled to find much of a rhythm early on this season and currently sit at 25-14, but head coach Steve Kerr believes it’s only a matter of time before the back-to-back defending champs hit their groove.

“We’ve got to do better,” Kerr said on Saturday, per ESPN’s Nick Friedell. “We know that. We’ve got to play better as a team. We’re at the halfway point now of the season coming up, so we are going to continue to work and we’re going to get to the point where we’re going to reach our potential, but we haven’t gotten there yet for sure.”

DR Congo on edge as presidential election results delayed

Preliminary results from Democratic Republic of Congo‘s tumultuous presidential election will be delayed past Sunday’s deadline, the head of the election commission has said.

The announcement on Saturday has prompted fears the vote result could be manipulated, with analysts saying prolonged uncertainty could trigger deadly clashes, similar to the violence that broke out in the central African country after the 2006 and 2011 elections.

The commission, known as CENI, had received only 47 percent of vote tally sheets as of Saturday, its president, Corneille Nangaa, told the Reuters news agency.

It not yet clear when the results would be ready, he said, adding: “It will not be possible to announce the results tomorrow.”

Nangaa said the delay was caused by logistical problems posed by the DRC’s size, with the country encompassing an area approximately as large as Western Europe.

The country’s powerful National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), which represents the country’s Catholic bishops, warned popular anger could result in the event the final result were not “true to the verdict of the ballot box”.

DR Congo’s powerful Catholic Church, which deployed more than 40,000 election observers, had said Thursday it knew who had won the vote, but did not name him as the country’s electoral regulations forbid anyone but the electoral commission to announce results.

In a letter to Nangaa on Saturday, CENCO president Mgr Marcel Utembi said that, given the delay, “if there is a popular uprising it would be the responsibility of the CENI”.

The December 30 vote saw 21 candidates run to replace President Joseph Kabila, who has ruled the vast, conflict-ridden country for almost 18 years.

Among the frontrunners were Kabila’s handpicked successor Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary and two opposition candidates: veteran heavyweight Felix Tshisekedi and newcomer Martin Fayulu.

Fears of violence

The lengthy counting process has raised fears among opposition politicians and non-governmental organisations the results could be manipulated to install Shadary in power.

Fayulu, Tshisekedi and the ruling coalition all claim to have won the vote.

The New York Times, citing an unnamed Western diplomat and a presidential adviser, said on Saturday that the church has determined that Fayulu won the election, with a lead of 30 points over Shadary.

Kabila’s ruling Common Front for Congo (FCC) coalition has accused CENCO of “seriously breaching” the constitution and electoral law by “illegally declaring voting trends” in favour of a given candidate.

Analysts warned of a heightened potential for violence should the uncertainty over Kabila’s successor continue.

“The state will want some more time to rig it, that’s what they are playing for, time,” said Reuben Loffman, a lecturer in African history and specialist in DRC history at UK-based Queen Mary University of London.

“If they release the results now they will immediately get exposed … the church would immediately come on to them,” he told Al Jazeera.

Independent Central Africa analyst Kris Berwouts, meanwhile, said Kabila’s administration was “cornered” in the wake of the election.

“The plan was to organise the elections and independent of who people voted for and proclaim Shadary as the winner,” said Berwouts, author of Congo’s Violent Peace: Conflict and Struggle since the Great African War.

“Everybody at this point is extremely aware of the potential for violence … that potential exists because the regime organised the elections to win them and that seems to have become difficult … it will be extremely difficult [for the government] to keep things as they are,” he told Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, international concerns are mounting over the transfer of power in sub-Saharan Africa’s largest nation. The United Nations Security Council met on Friday to discuss how to react, but was unable to reach an agreement, according to an internal report seen by Reuters.

Both the United States and the European Union have urged Kabila to ensure a peaceful change of power in recent days.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced he had ordered the US military to deploy soldiers to Gabon, one of nine countries which border the DRC, to protect US citizens and diplomatic facilities should violence break out.

The DRC has never had a peaceful transition of power; its first democratically elected leader, Patrice Lumumba, was assassinated in 1961, one year after the country gained independence from Belgium.

Lumumba was succeeded by Mobutu Sese Seko, whose decades-long rule was marked by authoritarianism, brutality and corruption.

He was forced out in a 1997 coup by Laurent-Desire Kabila, who was in turn assassinated in 2001.

Lawmakers on both sides of aisle request pay be withheld or donated amid shutdown

A slew of congressional lawmakers are vowing to decline their paychecks in a show of solidarity with federal employees affected by the partial government shutdown that stretched Saturday into its third week.

Several House members have submitted letters to the chamber’s chief administrative officer requesting that their pay be withheld until Democrats and Republicans broker a compromise to end the partisan funding battle set off by President Donald Trump’s demand for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Government workers will miss their first round of payments as a result of the shutdown on Jan. 11.

“I do not believe it is appropriate for members of Congress to be paid during a lapse in appropriations while hardworking border security agents and other civil servants are furloughed,” wrote Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.).

Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) dubbed the shutdown “yet another sad example of Washington’s dysfunction and inability to compromise,” and House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) wrote that he would not collect his salary “as long as our border security agents, air traffic controllers and TSA agents are not paid and their families not supported.”

Among the Democratic members who have made public their plans to refuse payment are Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-New York), Rep. Dwight Evans (D-Pa.), Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Tom O’Halleran (D-Ariz.).

“It is troubling that the White House and Congressional leaders are allowing partisan gridlock to get in the way of funding our government and preventing a shutdown yet again,” O’Halleran said in a statement.

Various senators also said they would not collect taxpayer dollars as the stalemate drags on, and announced plans to donate their earnings to various charities and non-profit organizations.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) pledged his payment to Homes for the Brave, an organization focused on combating homelessness among veterans, while Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) said she would be gifting her salary to food banks across her home state.

President Donald Trump on Friday issued an executive order canceling across-the-board pay raises for government workers in 2019, and the Office of Personnel Management announced it would be halting planned increases for Vice President Mike Pence and hundreds of other administration officials.

When Rashida Tlaib was sworn into Congress on Thursday, her election had already made history – and there, in the U.S. Capitol, her attire followed suit. Tlaib wore a thobe, or traditional Palestinian robe, which inspired Palestinian-American women around the country to share their own with the Twitter hashtag #TweetYourThobe.

Notably, Tlaib was sworn in on a Quran. Her sons also earned some attention when they dabbed in celebration after the swearing in.

As the son of a Palestinian mother, its a milestone for Palestinian-Americans to see their culture and heritage reflected in their elected officials. China passes law to make Islam ‘compatible with socialism’

China has passed a new law that seeks to “Sinicize” Islam within the next five years, the latest move by Beijing to rewrite how the religion is practised.

China’s main English newspaper, Global Times, reported on Saturday that after a meeting with representatives from eight Islamic associations, government officials “agreed to guide Islam to be compatible with socialism and implement measures to Sinicize the religion”.

The newspaper did not provide further details or the names of the associations that agreed to the decree.

China has embarked on an aggressive “Sinification” campaign in recent years with faith groups that were largely tolerated in the past seeing their freedoms shrink under Chinese President Xi Jinping, China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.

Practicing Islam has been made forbidden in parts of China, with individuals caught praying, fasting, growing a beard or wearing a hijab, facing the threat of arrest.

According to the UN, more than one million Uighur Muslims are estimated to be held in internment camps where they are forced to denounce the religion and pleadge allegiance to the officially atheist ruling Communist Party.

Rights groups have accused China of engaging in a campaign of ethnic cleansing. In August, a Washington Post editorial said the world “can’t ignore” the campaign against Muslims.

Islamic crescents and domes have been stripped from mosques, and according to the Associated Press news agency, religious schools and Arabic classes have been banned and children barred from participating in Muslim activities.

China has rejected the criticism, saying it protects the religion and culture of its minorities.

However, in the past week alone, authorities in China’s Yunnan province, which borders Mynamar, have closed three mosques established by the marginalised Hui Muslim ethnic minority, the South China Morning Post has reported.
