‘True Detective Season 3’ review: Thank god, it’s really good again

After a much loved first season and a near-universally panned second, HBO’s “two cops, sitting in a cop car, two feet apart because the space between them is occupied by the unfathomable cruelties of man” show True Detective is back. And thank god, it’s good again. Very good.

True Detective Season 3 — which made the first five episodes of the season available for review — is more than a return to Season 1’s spooky, winding excellence. It tackles different issues to previous seasons and focuses more sharply on issues and realities that were left unexamined in its previous iterations.

Casting Mahershala Ali as Detective Wayne Hays, undoubtedly the star of the third season, is the most affecting choice anyone involved could have made for True Detective. His character, who was originally conceived as a white detective, gives the show an opportunity to explore the machinations of racism in three different time periods — the 1980s, the ’90s, and finally in the 2010s.

SEE ALSO: Best gifts for people obsessed with true crime

True Detective has always been about the ways social class and human difference affect justice, but Detective Hays being partnered with the coarse and well-intentioned Detective West  allows those trademark cop car conversations to go places that the show hasn’t previously examined.

True Detective has always been about the ways social class and human difference affect justice, but Detective Hays being partnered with the coarse and well-intentioned Detective West (played by Stephen Dorff) allows those trademark cop car conversations to go places that the show hasn’t previously examined. Race is always present in Season 3, and it comes by its focus on the subject honestly — nothing about Wayne’s status as a black cop on the force is taken for granted, and the effect of racial stereotypes on the carriage of justice is also examined.

In this way the show succeeds in categories that early seasons couldn’t even compete in, and categorically improves its canon.

Further elevating True Detective Season 3 is Carmen Ejogo as Amelia Reardon, a schoolteacher who is so much more than Hays’ romantic interest. Her independent investigations and needed dose of empathy is crucial to understanding the show’s central mysteries.

There are other things that make True Detective Season 3 remarkable. It expands on the previous format of having two time periods — the case itself and later interviews about the case — by adding another timeline to follow, which is that of an elderly Hays reflecting on his story for a true crime documentary. It’s not too much of a spoiler to say that the elder Hays (still played by Ali in surprisingly convincing age makeup) suffers from a disease that makes his memory unreliable, which adds another layer of unreliable narration to some, if not all, of the flashbacks.

In common True Detective fashion there is beautiful cinematography and affecting musical stings in Season 3. Long scenes of detectives tracking clues go on without any dialogue and are carried only by the emotive quality of its actors’ faces. The case in question, that of two missing children, is compelling enough to carry an element of mystery that is sure to inspire many a message board discussion. These are all elements that are to be expected of the show, despite how many balls were dropped in the season previous.

Have no fear that Season 3 is the TD follow-up its fans deserve.

True Detective Season 3 premieres on HBO on January 13th.

Syrian refugees wading through knee-deep water in Lebanon camps

Bekaa Valley, Lebanon – Tarima Ibrahim huddled together with her children to keep them warm as incessant rainfall, heavy winds and hail slapped their tarpaulin tent and lashed their refugee camp.

“We are freezing,” she said. “The tent is not heating up because it is flooded with ice-cold water.”

Lebanon was hit by Storm Norma on January 6, heavily impacting at least 360 informal refugee settlements and putting 850 others at risk. The country is home to more than a million Syrian refugees, many of whom live in temporary structures like these.

Tarima’s camp, Ali Askar, is situated near the snow-capped Qalamoun mountains, in an area called Bar Elias in Lebanon which is one of the worst hit by the storm.

Wading through knee-deep water, Tarima pointed to the floating utensils, soaked jackets and dripping blankets in her tent. “We lost a home in Syria, now we have lost what we had here,” she said.

In 2015, Tarima fled Homs in Syria and moved to the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. She said that she may have saved her family from the war but does not know how to protect them from the wrath of nature.

According to the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, at least 70,000 people are at risk from extreme weather, over half of them children. Norma has already claimed the life of its first victim, an eight-year-old girl who was swept away by the flood in the Minieh region.

Tarima is frightened about losing her children to the storm. “I was afraid they would be swallowed by the flood, now I am worried about disease,” she said.

Her 18-month-old boy Ahmad has been running a high fever for over a week now but has not yet seen a doctor.

“There are no medicines and no doctors,” she said. “Look at this dirty water. Won’t there be sickness?” she added. Her other children have colds and coughs, a condition many children in the camp are suffering from.

“There is not enough food either. My children have not had milk for over a week,” Tarima said, adding that she lost the food she had saved to the water and is now waiting for local Lebanese NGOs to provide whatever they can.

Lisa Abou Khaled, a spokesperson for UNHCR, told Al Jazeera that the organisation has begun to pump out water in the camps in the Bekaa. She said it is “proving to be a challenging task” because most of the camps are built below road level and rainwater has continued to accumulate.

“Both in the North and the Bekaa, alternative sites have been identified to accommodate families affected by the storm,” Abou Khaled said, adding that about 600 people had been relocated so far and some have moved into permanent structures with family and friends, while others have sought shelter in nearby schools or mosques.

Lisa said that along with local authorities and partners, UNHCR has distributed blankets, mattresses, and drainage kits.

‘Swimming pool’

The International Rescue Committee [IRC] has also sent its team to the affected areas and reported severe damage in the camps in North Lebanon.

Paul Donohoe of the IRC said that their team visited the camps in the Akkar region and described the site as “looking more like a swimming pool”.

“Irrigation and drainage at informal tented settlements are poor and it is almost impossible to prevent flood water entering the tents,” Donohoe said.

IRC has suspended many of its educational activities in the country, affecting 5,700 students.

A refugee outside Tamira’s tent in Ali Askar camp near the Syrian border [Anchal Vohra/Al Jazeera]

Donohoe described the helplessness of the refugee children who rely on begging or selling various items on the streets. “The severity of the storm didn’t prevent many Syrian children from continuing to work or begging on the streets to help make ends meet for their families.”

Nadia Rdeini, a local activist, has been conducting many rounds of the Ali Askar camp. As the camp flooded, she said, the refugees were rushed to the centres run by two NGOs in the camp so they could be provided some immediate relief. But much more needs to be done.

“The people need more food, more blankets, more clothes,” she said. “We also need to help them to rebuild their tents and provide them with the few necessary items they need to live which they have now lost.”

Nadia is concerned that the people may have to live with the aftermath long after the bad weather has passed. She volunteers with an NGO called Lighthouse Peace Initiative, which has started a fundraiser campaign to help the refugees in the Bekaa Valley.

Another resident in the camp is Huda al Zahoori, whose tent is also flooded. She is in her late sixties and lives alone in the camp. Her husband left for Syria a few months ago when they heard that their son had been arrested by the Syrian government, she said.

“My husband went to search for him but he has not found our son yet,” she said. I do not want to live in such conditions in Lebanon but how do I go back? It is not safe in Syria for us.”

Huda’s sentiment resonated in other camps. The Syrian refugees said that they were tired of the living conditions in Lebanon even before the storm hit but could not see a way out.

Little help from authorities

Tarima feels she has no choice. “The way Lebanon has treated us, it is clear they want us to leave but where do I go when I go back to Syria?” she asked, “My house has been destroyed and the government will enlist my husband in the army. Who will feed us then?”

The Lebanese government has always said that they want the Syrian refugees to return to Syria and has done little to help those struck by the storm and in urgent need of help.

On Thursday, Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri headed a meeting with a range of ministries and announced measures to mitigate the impact of another storm expected over the weekend.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that government intends to clear up four storm drains located within Greater Beirut and repair damage on key roads.

The Syrian refugee encampments though may continue to be inundated. Lebanon does not allow official refugee camps and has strict restrictions on material that can be used to build even semi-permanent structures, to prevent them becoming permanent. This has forced many Syrians to live in unprotected tents and brave harsh winters year after year.

The Lebanese government fears that the Syrian refugees may never return and will stay back in Lebanon just as the Palestinians did who came here in 1948.

On Wednesday, Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun said that the Syrians should go back to Syria, take part in the Syrian reconstruction and live with dignity.

Tarima said that she does not want to say anything against the Lebanese government but she does not have any hopes from them.

“We pray to our God that the waters recede,” she said. “But it would be very kind of you to ask someone to help us with water for the toilets. The bathrooms in the NGO centre are very dirty,” she added, as two boys rowed a plank of wood from one camp to another.

The two teams drew even in overtime, but the Spurs never trailed in the second extra session en route to one of the wildest games in recent NBA history. STATS explained just some of the reasons:

Thunder Quietly Developing Title-Caliber Supporting Cast

Oklahoma City could have three All-Stars in Westbrook, Paul George and Steven Adams, but the Thunder’s performance proved the team has supporting cast members who can propel them to the NBA Finals.

First, Terrance Ferguson put on a show from deep following a 4-of-4 night from beyond the arc Tuesday. None of his shots were bigger than a game-tying three-pointer with 40.7 seconds remaining in regulation:

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

Ferguson 3. White answer.
What a 4Q. https://t.co/3P52R2w1MO

Royce Young of ESPN praised the pass, given that Westbrook had an opportunity for a three himself:

Royce Young @royceyoung

What a pass from Westbrook. Turned down the wide open 3, and found Ferguson.

Westbrook’s trust in Ferguson to knock down one of the game’s most critical shots is a good sign for the second-year pro’s immediate future. Although Ferguson hasn’t had much of an offensive impact in his career, the 20-year-old may have experienced a breakthrough in recent days.

Second, Grant is developing into a Swiss army knife. Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer praised his defensive versatility:

Kevin O’Connor @KevinOConnorNBA

Jerami Grant is filthy. There are very few true five-position defenders in the NBA. Grant is one of them.

While there wasn’t much defense played in the Southwest shootout, the Thunder rank No. 1 in defensive efficiency thanks in part to Grant’s efforts. He’s also in the top 50 in defensive real plus-minus.

Fred Katz of The Athletic, who used to cover the Thunder, gave Grant an excellent compliment as well:

Fred Katz @FredKatz

@KellyIkoNBA 30 teams could use a Jerami Grant type

The energetic Grant scored 25 points on 10-of-20 shooting and added 12 rebounds and three blocks. He averaged 12.4 points on 52.4 percent shooting entering Thursday.

The most remarkable part of the Thunder’s gutsy performance isn’t about who was on the court. Rather, it’s who the Thunder didn’t have.

Shooting guard Andre Roberson is recovering from a small avulsion fracture in his left knee. He ranked second overall in defensive real plus-minus last season and first among guards. If he were on the floor Thursday, the Spurs would have been hard-pressed to make 14 straight threes.

Backup big man Nerlens Noel suffered a concussion Tuesday, and he too offers a strong defensive presence. He’s ranked 10th in the league in defensive real plus-minus.

And yet the Thunder somehow almost won a game against a scorching-hot Spurs team that is 18-5 at home and just put forth one of the best offensive performances by any team this decade. The Thunder may not take solace in a moral victory, but the loss may foreshadow a successful spring.

Spurs’ Bench Can Propel Them into Top 4 in West

Aldridge put on a clinic during his 56-point performance. His patented turnaround jumper was unstoppable, and he scored in the paint with ease.

But the Spurs wouldn’t have won without a tremendous performance from their bench, which has been a catalyst for the team’s run.

Belinelli was plus-17 after 24 minutes. Patty Mills and Davis Bertans combined for seven three-pointers and 26 more points. At one point, the Spurs bench was nearly outscoring the Thunder by themselves, per Erik Horne of The Oklahoman:

Erik Horne @ErikHorneOK

Spurs bench through 16 minutes: 32 points, 9-of-9 3-pointers
Thunder through 16 minutes: 35 points

Belinelli was also the reason for one of the game’s more ridiculous stats in a night full of them, per Spurs Basketball Communications Coordinator Jordan Howenstine:

Jordan Howenstine @AirlessJordan

Marco Belinelli hit 3 three-pointers in less than one minute tonight.

Last player to do that -> Belinelli – earlier this season on 12/21.

Belinelli’s ability to take over a game from three-point land is an excellent weapon off the bench, and Mills in particular has been fantastic. In his last six outings, the ex-St. Mary’s star has averaged 13.0 points per outing.

And Bertans recently received positive remarks from Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich for his developing offensive game: “Absolutely, he’s not just a three-point shooter,” Popovich said per Jeff Garcia of Fox 29 San Antonio on Monday. “He can drive it; he’s finding people after he drives it, which is a big sign of development for him.”

The Spurs also got a bit deeper Thursday as Pau Gasol returned to the starting lineup, and that was without third-leading scorer Rudy Gay on the floor. The 32-year-old veteran is out with a sprained left wrist, but when he returns, he’ll help create one of the league’s deepest teams.

Even with Gay and Gasol missing games this year, the Spurs are tied for fifth in the Western Conference and just one game in back of the Thunder for third.

The Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets look like they’ll hold the top two conference seeds, barring injuries or an unforeseen collapse, but a top-four ranking isn’t out of the realm of possibility for the Spurs.

They won’t be this hot every night, but the fact that numerous reserves are capable of lighting it up from deep breeds confidence heading into the regular season’s second half.

What’s Next?

The teams will finish a home-and-home set Saturday at 8 p.m. ET in Oklahoma City.

What a 4Q. https://t.co/3P52R2w1MO

HBO’s Twitter account just burned Jack Dorsey

Ouch.
Ouch.

2017%2f09%2f18%2f2b%2fjackbw5.32076By Jack Morse

Nothing brings out a perfectly workshopped diss like a little cross-industry promotional opportunism.

We were reminded of this fact on Jan. 10, when, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the show The Sopranos, the HBO Twitter account announced it would dish out Sopranos-inspired nicknames. And you better believe that Twitter CEO and “conversational health” guru Jack Dorsey wanted in on the fun.

“In honor of the 20th anniversary of The Sopranos, I’m handing out Soprano nicknames today,” read the tweet from HBO’s main account. “Who wants one? FYI if you tell me your first name, this is way easier for me.”

Dorsey replied with an emoji of a person raising his right arm, and the word “jack.”

HBO was apparently happy to oblige, and hit the man who was most recently accused of some pretty serious Myanmar-related ignorance with a nickname all his own.

World, meet “Jackie No Edits.”

The nickname references the misguided desire of misinformed people to force Twitter to implement an edit button. This is a bad idea, but an OK burn as far as burns go.

Dorsey, for his part, quickly changed his profile name to “jackie no edits.” And thus, the corporate cycle was complete, and we could all go back to our peaceful online lives

Elon Musk posts first glimpse of SpaceX’s finished Starship test vehicle

2016%2f09%2f16%2fe7%2fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde1lzex.0f9e7By Johnny Lieu

Elon Musk just gave us a look at the first test version of SpaceX’s Starship.

Formerly known as the BFR, Musk announced on Thursday that the spaceflight company’s test version of the Starship, dubbed the “hopper,” has just finished being assembled at SpaceX’s launch site in Boca Chica Village, Texas.

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk says he’s not joking about that hover car

This particular Starship will be used for suborbital vertical take-off tests, which will be similar to ones it completed for the Falcon 9 back in 2013.

An orbital version of the Starship will be taller, have thicker skins to avoid wrinkling, and a smoother nose. Musk said the company should have its first orbital prototype by June.

The Starship is SpaceX’s new class of super-heavy launch vehicle that will replace the company’s current crop of products, and will allow for potential missions around the Moon and to Mars.

Twitter user Evelyn Janeidy Arevalo managed to get up close to the hopper prototype, and has posted pictures and video of the Starship.

Last week, Musk hinted that the suborbital Starship test could happen as soon as February, but some “unforeseen issues” could push it back a month.

Lauren Jauregui’s ‘More Than That’ Is A Swaggering, Hypnotic Flex

Courtesy Alexa Zeliger

After wallowing in frustration and jadedness on “Expectations,” Lauren Jauregui is turning the tables. On Friday (January 11), the former Fifth Harmony singer kept her debut solo era going with “More Than That,” a sultry number that finds her cooly asserting her dominance.

“If I’ma take a gamble then you better come correct / I need more than them diamonds that you got around your neck/ Shit, anybody can flex,” Jauregui sings on the swaggering first verse. She rides the hypnotic, 808-tinged beat straight into a hook that’s as confident as it is catchy: “Boy, you better come stronger than this liquor / Wanna take me home? Better be more convincing / It’ll take more than that to get to me / More than that to get your way.”

There’s a reason this track came with such ethereal artwork: If god is a woman, then the dude Jauregui’s singing about better stop playing and bow down.

Jauregui’s new single is the latest taste of her hotly anticipated debut solo album, expected to release this year. Despite “More Than That” sounding tailor-made for an R&B feature, the 22-year-old previously hinted that there would be no collaborations on the project. “It’s just gonna be my voice,” she said last year.

No complaints there — after years spent sharing tracks with four other girls, she’s earned the spotlight.

Myanmar cracking down on opium, but conflicts fuel drug trade

The amount of land being used to grow opium poppies continues to decline in Myanmar, but ongoing conflicts are hampering efforts to stamp out the trade at a time when the illicit drug economy is becoming increasingly diverse, according to a new UN report.

Some 37,300 hectares of land in the country was under poppy cultivation last year, down from 41,000 in 2017, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said in its Myanmar Opium Survey 2018 on Friday.

Nearly 90 percent of all the opium was grown in the northeastern Shan state, where government forces continue to battle ethnic rebels.

“The biggest drops in cultivation have been seen in areas that have had relatively good security,” the UNODC said.

“However, in parts of Shan and Kachin experiencing a protracted state of conflict, high concentrations of poppy cultivation have continued – a clear correlation between conflict and opium production.”

Myanmar has been battling conflicts in its border regions for decades and the unrest has long underpinned the drugs trade; in the mid-1990s, Myanmar’s Golden Triangle, which includes the border areas of Laos and Thailand, had the dubious distinction of being the centre of the world’s opium and heroin trade.

Since then, government eradication efforts have helped tackle the problem, but the conflicts continue to provide the kind of conditions that allow the illicit drug trade to thrive.

Myanmar is still the world’s second biggest producer, after Afghanistan, and it remains the major supplier of opium and heroin in East and Southeast Asia, as well as Australia.

Shift to methamphetamines

The UN drugs and crimes agency said civil strife last year also made it difficult for the government to access opium-growing areas, obstructing efforts to destroy poppy fields.

About 2,605 hectares was eradicated in 2018, 26 percent less than the previous year, it said. UNODC data shows eradication has been in decline since 2015.

The agency noted that economic problems including a lack of job opportunities and income inequality also contributed to the resilience of the drug trade amid increasing efforts by traffickers and organised criminals to diversify the market.

UN warns of intensified violence in northern Myanmar

The UN drugs and crimes agency pointed out that of the 11 countries in the region that shared data with it, nine now say methamphetamine is their biggest drug of concern, compared with only four a decade ago when heroin was their main worry.

“There has been a sharp increase in the supply of, and demand for, synthetic drugs and particularly methamphetamine across East and Southeast Asia and neighbouring regions,” the UNODC said. “The downward trend in opium cultivation and related heroin production needs to be understood in this context.”

The agency’s report came days after the International Crisis Group said that the long-running conflict in Shan state had turned the area into a hub for the global trade in crystal methamphetamine or ice, with the business controlled by local armed groups.

“The trade, which now dwarfs legitimate business activities, creates a political economy inimical to peace and security,” the group said in a report on Monday.

“It generates revenue for armed groups of all stripes.”

Crisis Group also said the militias and other armed groups who control both the areas of production and the main trafficking routes have no incentive to demobilise, because the weapons, territorial control and absence of state institutions are essential to the maintenance of their drug income.

The trade also attracts transnational criminal groups and allows “a culture of payoffs and graft to flourish” as officials are bribed for protection, support or to turn a blind eye to what it happening.

This “adds to the grievances of ethnic minority communities that underpin the seventy-year old civil war“, the group’s research found.

Regional strategy needed

In its survey, UNODC noted that while fewer hectares of land were being cultivated with poppies in Shan and Kachin, the concentration of fields was highest in the parts of the states where the conflict was most protracted.

In Kachin, most opium cultivation took place in areas controlled by the Kachin Independence Army, while in North Shan it was in areas under the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army; in South Shan, the Pa-O National Liberation Army, the Restoration Council of Shan State and the Shan State Army South, and in East Shan, the People Militia’s Force.

“There is a direct connection between drugs and conflict in the country, with the drug economy supporting the conflict and in-turn the conflict facilitating the drug economy,” the UNODC said. “Providing solutions to the conflict requires breaking this cycle.”

Resolving the issue will also require regional cooperation, Jeremy Douglas, regional representative for the UNODC in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, told Al Jazeera.

The manufacture of methamphetamines and ice require precursor chemicals, which are often smuggled into the country from China, while the drugs themselves need reliable trafficking networks to reach consumers beyond Myanmar’s borders.

“The region needs a shared strategy,” Douglas said. “Myanmar will not be able to solve the situation alone.”
