Todd Gurley, C.J. Anderson Lead Rams to NFC Championship with Win vs. Cowboys

LOS ANGELES, CA - JANUARY 12: Todd Gurley #30 of the Los Angeles Rams scores a 35 yard touchdown in the second quarter against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Divisional Playoff game at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 12, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

    Harry How/Getty Images

The Los Angeles Rams moved on to the NFC Championship Game after they earned their first playoff win since 2004 on Saturday night.

The running game led the way in the 30-22 divisional-round win over the Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Todd Gurley and C.J. Anderson each topped 100 rushing yards and combined for three touchdowns as the Rams avoided the upset against what had been one of the NFL‘s hottest teams.

Dak Prescott finished with a passing touchdown and rushing score, but it wasn’t enough to help the Cowboys, who still haven’t won a road playoff game since 1993.

Dominant Offensive Line Can Pave Way to Rams Super Bowl Win

The Rams finished the year second in the NFL in both total yards and points scored, but not a lot of credit was given to the offensive line. Not a single player on the unit was named to the Pro Bowl or either All-Pro team.

However, the group deserves full recognition for its showing against a tough Cowboys defense.

The Rams gashed Dallas’ front seven on the ground, rushing for 170 yards in the first half before finishing with 273 yards in the game.

Todd Gurley was the obvious focal point coming in and finished with 115 yards on the ground, but veteran C.J. Anderson was even more impressive with 123 yards and two scores.

While each played well on their own, it was easier with wide-open holes created by Andrew Whitworth, Rodger Saffold and others.

Those watching along recognized the play of the big boys up front:

    Matt Lombardo @MattLombardoNFL

#Rams offensive line is simply dominating at the moment.

    Mike Greenberg @Espngreeny

I can’t believe the way this #Rams offensive line is dominating. I don’t think anyone saw that coming.

The effort in the first half likely helped convince Sean McVay to go for it on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter, which ended up being a second touchdown for Anderson.

Dallas ranked fifth in the NFL in rushing yards allowed and held Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson to just 20 yards on 13 carries in the Wild Card Game. However, the team couldn’t slow down the Rams in this one.

The pass blocking was just as impressive Saturday, as Jared Goff was sacked zero times with just one quarterback hit.

This type of performance will be necessary in the NFC Championship Game no matter who the Rams face. The Saints had the No. 2 run defense in the league with Cameron Jordan making an impact in the pass rush, while Fletcher Cox, Michael Bennett and the Eagles defensive line is also no joke.

However, if the offensive line can play like it did against the Cowboys, no one will be able to stop the Rams offense before they raise the Lombardi Trophy in a few weeks.

Rams Defense Must Provide More Help Around Aaron Donald

Aaron Donald isn’t just the best defensive tackle in the NFL; he is one of the most impressive players in the league at any position.

The All-Pro finished with two tackles Saturday, although his contributions went well beyond the numbers.

Donald was being double-teamed for much of the night—as he has all season—but still found a way to make an impact:

    trey wingo @wingoz

This game is living proof that you don’t need sacks to be dominant. Aaron Donald is WEARING FOLKS OUT

    Ryan Clark @Realrclark25

Aaron Donald is making folks hold him… PERIOD. Just whipping folks easy

    His tackles were also noteworthy:

    Los Angeles Rams @RamsNFL

    HELLO, @AaronDonald97 😳

    #DALvsLA https://t.co/IrWpLJO8w8

His effort opens things up for other guys on the defense to make plays. The problem is we didn’t see much of anyone else in this game.

While the Cowboys were held to 22 points, the team’s biggest issue was its inefficiency on third down while finishing 1-of-10 in the game. This required some key plays from the Rams defense, but the Cowboys also made their own mistakes.

Los Angeles forced zero turnovers on defense, and the only sack came on a questionable “in the grasp” call where it appeared Prescott escaped.

This type of effort won’t be good enough against either the Saints or the Eagles.

The Rams have had some questionable games as a defense, but the unit has survived thanks to its ability to make game-changing plays. Even while allowing 51 points to the Kansas City Chiefs, the team also forced five turnovers with a couple of defensive touchdowns to help come away with the dramatic win.

Los Angeles needs players like Dante Fowler and Marcus Peters to play to their ability in the next game to avoid being outscored like in the first matchups against the Saints and Eagles.

Cowboys Set Up for Extended Window if Dak Prescott Does His Job

Few expected the Cowboys to be playing at this point in the year after the 3-5 start to the season. However, the team turned things around with eight wins in nine games to get to the divisional round.

No one likes being eliminated from the playoffs, but this team should be proud of what it has achieved this season. For fans around the country, they should be especially excited about where this group can go next year and beyond.

Despite getting gashed by the Rams on the ground in this game, the strength of this team was its defense full of young playmakers like Leighton Vander Esch and Byron Jones. While offensive production can be inconsistent from season to season, this performance by the defense was legitimate, and the unit could get even better as the players get more experienced.

Demarcus Lawrence and David Irving are pending free agents but could make this an elite defense if they return.

Meanwhile, everyone should return on an offense that has gotten better in the second half of the season.

Amari Cooper brought the type of explosiveness the team had been missing before his midseason trade, showing the deal was indeed a great value:

    Next Gen Stats @NextGenStats

Amari Cooper reached a max speed of 20.45 MPH on his 29-yard TD reception in the 1st quarter.

Cooper now has 3 of the top 4 fastest top speeds as a ball carrier for the @DallasCowboys this season.

    #DALvsLAR #DallasCowboys https://t.co/fG3nnFj7bV

Michael Gallup also had a breakout performance against the Rams, finishing with six catches for 119 yards. Adding in Ezekiel Elliott and a strong offensive line when healthy, the situation is perfect for Dak Prescott to succeed.

Of course, the quarterback remains the biggest question mark on the roster after an up-and-down season. While he had big moments, he also relied upon the talent around him to carry him when needed.

Still, he showed the type of impact he can make when he is given the opportunity to succeed.

His third-quarter throw to Gallup was very Patrick Mahomes-esque and one of the best plays he has made all season:

    NFL @NFL

    Galluping for 44 yards!

First and goal for the #DallasCowboys

    📺: #DALvsLAR on FOX https://t.co/FiA1rWW526

Prescott also used his legs in the fourth quarter, running in a touchdown on an option play in the closing minutes.

While he wasn’t perfect, he avoided turnovers and gave his team a chance to win on the road against a very good opponent. This is what you want from your quarterback, and this level of play could help the Cowboys next season.

Even without any key additions in the offseason, Dallas should be one of the favorites in the NFC in 2019.

    What’s Next?

The Rams advance to the NFC Championship Game to face either the New Orleans Saints or Philadelphia Eagles. Meanwhile, the Cowboys will go into the offseason hoping they can find the missing pieces needed to get over the hump.

Guatemalans protest gov’t decision to kick out anti-graft body

Guatemala City – Holding picket signs emblazoned with messages condemning corruption, Dolores Yal and other indigenous Maya Kaqchikel women and men lined up behind their banners, waiting for the march to begin.

They travelled 65km from the Patzicia municipality to Guatemala City to join hundreds of Guatemalans to march against the latest government threats to constitutional order and anti-corruption efforts.

“We are here to oppose corruption. We have already been battling it for years,” Yal, a leader of the Residents Against Corruption in Patzicia movement, told Al Jazeera.

The protests come after Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales on Monday shutdown the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) and ordered its international staff to leave the country within 24 hours.

The CICIG shutdown and government defiance of Constitutional Court rulings overturning its anti-CICIG measures have sparked widespread opposition. Patzicia residents, urban collectives, human rights activists, students, artists and other Guatemalans gathered at a capital city roundabout Saturday to begin an hours-long march into the downtown core.

“We do not want [CICIG] to leave the country. We want it to come back,” said Yal.

Jorge Santos sees the growing demonstrations as a positive sign. The executive director of Udefegua, a national human rights group, Santos attended the march along with other human rights observers from the organisation.

“The executive branch of government undertook these illegal, unconstitutional and illegitimate actions during a period when they did not expect people to react, between Christmas and into the new year,” he told Al Jazeera as hundreds of people began marching up a boulevard.

    Repeated attacks on CICIG

Established in 2007, CICIG gained international attention following an investigation into the administration of then President Otto Perez Molina, which led to his resignation in 2015 and prosecution for corruption.

Morales was elected president on an anti-corruption platform just days after Perez Molina’s arrest. Since taking office in 2016, however, the Morales administration has faced investigations into alleged acts of corruption, including illegal financing of the 2015 campaign. Morales has denied all allegations of corruption.

As the investigations into Morales and his party progressed, the administration attempted in 2017 to derail CICIG’s investigations by declaring head commissioner Ivan Velasquez persona non-grata, attempting to bar him from the country. The measure was reversed days later by the country’s Constitutional Court.

In August 2018, Morales announced that he was not going to renew CICIG’s mandate and then barred Velasquez from the country in early September. Once again the Constitutional Court ruled against Morales’s unilateral decision, but the administration refused to comply with the court order.

The battle between the government and the country’s top court continued over visas for international CICIG personnel in December 2018 and into the new year, when the government detained a CICIG investigator January 5 for more than 24 hours upon entry at the airport.

Two days later, Morales announced Monday that the government was unilaterally withdrawing from the agreement with the UN that established the CICIG. He accused the body of polarising the country, violating human rights, and being allied with criminal structures and “terrorists”.

“The [government] thinks that it has absolute power,” said Pamela Saravia, a member of the Batucada del Pueblo collective that has participated with drumming in nearly every anti-corruption protest since 2015.

“This is the moment to tell them that it isn’t that way. We need to defend the constitution,” Saravia told Al Jazeera.

The Constitutional Court ordered a provisional injunction on Wednesday, reversing the expulsion of CICIG, but the highest court itself is also under attack. The government has been defying its rulings, breaking with constitutional order, and government-aligned politicians are attempting to remove judges.

In a public statement on Friday, the Guatemalan government pledged ongoing support for anti-corruption efforts and the rule of law, but made no explicit mention of either CICIG or the court.

    More protests expected

Velasquez weighed in on Friday with an 11-page letter to UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres, laying out details of the commission’s work and responding to the accusations against CICIG levelled by Morales, among others.

“The smear campaigns, defamation and threats have increased. That is expected when it comes to a body that has as its goal the prosecution of structures that co-opt the State to make a profit and that refuse to give up the privileges they obtained illegally and illegitimately,” Velasquez wrote.

Saturday’s march kicked off several days of protests and scheduled for next week around the country.

A broad coalition of organisations has organised highway and border blockades on Monday, and a rural social movement has plans for further nationwide actions on Tuesday.

Guatemalan movements see the struggle against corruption and a constitutional breakdown as more important than ever as the country prepares for the June 2019 general elections.

“The issue right now is that we must defend and guarantee that the government respects the constitution,” said Saravia.

“We must prevent by all means the authoritarianism of the government that we are seeing today,” she said.

Warren calls for ‘systemic change’ in first New Hampshire swing

Sen. Elizabeth Warren speaks during a New Hampshire organizing event.

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Sen. Elizabeth Warren called for “systemic change” ranging from eliminating for-profit prisons and legalizing marijuana to establishing more equitable housing programs during her first New Hampshire swing of the 2020 presidential campaign Saturday.

“We need to make change in this country. Not little bitty change. Not change at the margins. Not a nibble around the edges, not even pass one good law here and one good law there,” Warren said at Manchester Community College, which her campaign said drew about 500 people. “We need to make systemic change in this country.”

    Story Continued Below

The Massachusetts Democrat is seen as a strong contender in the neighboring Granite State’s early 2020 primary, where her closest competition could be Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who won the state’s 2016 Democratic primary and is weighing another run. During an hour-long question-and-answer session Saturday, Warren repeatedly highlighted issues faced by people of color, a group Sanders struggled to reach in his first bid for the White House.

She said the United States should do away with for-profit prisons and legalize marijuana to put an end to disproportionate arrests and convictions for people of color, responding to a question on criminal justice reform asked by 26-year-old Pedro Altagracia of Concord.

“We now have a criminal justice system that tears apart communities of color and individuals,” Warren said. “That is a criminal justice system that is broken, front to back.”

The Massachusetts Democrat also touted her plans to build more housing and make rent more affordable for middle and lower-income families. She called for boosting the estate tax that was phased out under President George W. Bush and again targeted by Republicans in their 2017 tax overhaul.

“You could pay for every single one of those 3.2 million housing units without costing a single middle-class family in America one thin dime,” Warren said.

In her stump speech, Warren, a former Harvard professor, brushed off the assumption that she is a product of the Ivy League. “For those who think I was born at Harvard, in fact, I went to the state law school,” she said, referring to Rutgers University in New Jersey. As she did in an earlier swing through Iowa, Warren emphasized her upbringing in Oklahoma, her older brothers’ service in the military and her parents’ struggle to keep their finances afloat.

Warren was the first household-name Democrat to announce an exploratory committee. As she courted New Hampshire voters in Manchester and at a house party in Concord, the 2020 field grew by two. Democrat Julian Castro formally announced he’s running at a San Antonio event after launching an exploratory committee in 2018, and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced her 2020 run on CNN the night before.

But Sanders was the competitor on the minds of many in the crowd Saturday, several of whom told POLITICO they were deciding between the Vermont lawmaker and Warren.

Megan Arsenault, 27, of Concord, said she voted for Sanders in 2016 but is undecided whether she will support him again or root for Warren in 2020. She said she supported the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which Warren proposed and then set up after it was created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank law.

“It’s up in the air at this point,” Arsenault said of her 2020 primary vote.

Asked how she planned to capture the 60 percent of New Hampshire Democrats who voted for Sanders over Hillary Clinton, the eventual Democratic nominee for president in 2016, Warren told reporters she’s running because her “life’s work has been about what’s happening to America’s working families.”

“I don’t know if she’ll be the final candidate I support, but I’m a great admirer,” said Rosie Little of Concord, who said she agrees with Warren’s plans to help the middle class.

Rich Lawless of Hooksett, 61, attended the Warren event with his 10-year-old grandson Killian Kirby. “We’re here to see the show. We’re here to listen,” Lawless said. The pair are aiming to see as many 2020 candidates passing through New Hampshire as they can. Last cycle, Kirby attended events for President Donald Trump and Clinton and met Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Lawless said he voted for Trump in 2016 and that he’s glad to see construction booming in New England, but his mind isn’t made up for next February’s primary.

Warren, a vocal critic of the president in the Senate, has stayed away from using Trump’s name on the campaign trail over the last two weeks. It’s a departure from her 2018 reelection strategy, when she often tied her Republican opponent to the president during debates.

“We need to talk about our affirmative vision,” Warren said Saturday. “I’m willing to fight. Everybody knows that. The question is, how do we build an America that works not just for those at the top but an America that works for everyone else?”

Discovery in skeleton’s teeth reveals role of Medieval women in art

It’s not surprising to learn that women who lived during the Middle Ages didn’t always get the credit they deserved, but tangible proof that further erodes our male-centric view of history is always welcome.

A new study asserts that lapis lazuli found in the teeth from the remains of a Medieval woman indicates that she was an artist. Researchers are calling the discovery a “bombshell” because it provides extremely uncommon proof of the role that women played as skilled artists at the time.

“It’s kind of a bombshell for my field,” Alison Beach, a medieval history professor at Ohio State University and co-author of the study, told the Associated Press. “It’s so rare to find material evidence of women’s artistic and literary work in the Middle Ages.”

“B78,” as the anonymous skeleton is identified, was 45 to 60 years old when she died. She was then buried at a monastery in Germany sometime between 1000 and 1200 AD. Researchers first began to examine the mouth of the anonymous skeleton to better understand Medieval diet.

SEE ALSO: The internet couldn’t help but laugh at the poor Pompeii victim crushed by a giant rock

But the discovery they made was much more substantial. The resulting study, published in Science Advances by the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History and the University of York, found remnants of the stone lapis lazuli.

At the time, lapis was used to create blue pigment, and it was as valuable as gold. Specifically, artists used it to create illuminated manuscripts, which are intricately painted, often with precious materials. Researchers said that only skilled painters were entrusted with this duty, and as such, were some of the few people with access to the stone.

    <img alt="Lapis lazuli in the teeth of a medieval woman." class="" data-caption="Lapis lazuli in the teeth of a medieval woman." data-credit-name="science advances” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!60c0″ data-image=”http://bit.ly/2SMpwce; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/RvFmFcahubqyvS6DYD2OB6m2Eo4=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F916341%2F7290cfe8-0949-4fbc-a71d-96e1f8f58b80.jpg” title=”Lapis lazuli in the teeth of a medieval woman.”>

Lapis lazuli in the teeth of a medieval woman.

    Image: science advances

So how did ancient residue of a blue stone get into the skeleton’s mouth?

Researchers think that licking the tip of a paintbrush was a common method to get a fine tip at the time. There are other explanations for how the lapis might have entered her mouth; perhaps she helped produce the stone, or it could have been used as a medical treatment. But a frequently licked paintbrush is the most likely explanation for the amount of lapis found in B78’s mouth so many centuries later.

It’s pretty cool to learn that a random skeleton was an elite artist in the Middle Ages. But the discovery has bigger implications. Scribes of the time penned every book produced by hand, and while few were credited it is believed that women both contributed more and were recognized less than is known. This discovery supports that belief.

“Because things are much better documented for men, it’s encouraged people to imagine a male world,” Beach told the AP. “This helps us correct that bias. This tooth opens a window on what activities women also were engaged in.”
