Travis Scott will be performing at 2019’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, but he made the NFL agree to contribute to a worthy cause first.

Scott was rumored to be appearing as a special guest on Maroon 5’s upcoming Halftime show. The “Sicko Mode” rapper was quickly criticized for the rumored move, in light of the fact that the NFL effectively put quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s professional football career on hold for his protests against police brutality and racial inequality during pre-game National Anthem performances.

In partnership with the NFL, Scott will make a $500,000 donation to Dream Corps, a social justice organization that pushes anti-poverty and environmental initiatives.

“I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in,” Scott said in a statement that makes no explicit mention of Kaepernick or the earlier backlash he’d faced. “So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation.”

He added that he’s “proud to support Dream Corps” and hopes that the group’s work will “inspire and promote change.”

Other artists, including Rihanna and Jay-Z, have reportedly declined to perform at the Super Bowl, as a show of support for Kaepernick.

Twitter users weren’t impressed with the announcement, and were skeptical of Scott’s donation.

Would be awesome if he didn’t do it at all. Wtf they congratulating him for lol

Maroon 5 will also be backed by Big Boi during their performance.

Kyler Murray Rumors: Star Is Seeking $15M, Wants ‘Big-Time Money’ from A’s

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray (1) looks to pass the ball, during the second half of the Orange Bowl NCAA college football game against Alabama, Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, in Miami Gardens, Fla. (AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee)

Oklahoma quarterback and Oakland Athletics draftee Kyler Murray is deciding whether to continue his football career in the NFL or move on to baseball, and it appears money could play an important factor.

According to Mike Leslie of WFAA, Murray is hoping to get $15 million from the Athletics to stick with baseball. He will reportedly declare for the NFL draft if he doesn’t get “big-time money.” However, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported the $15 million figure is “too high” but that the A’s and Murray’s representatives “are working on something creative to accommodate him.”

The outfield prospect was drafted No. 9 overall in the MLB draft in June and signed a $4.66 million signing bonus.

While Murray had limited exposure on the football field at the time, he exploded during the 2018 season for the Sooners and won the Heisman Trophy as the best player in the country.

Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller polled scouts and executives who said the quarterback “would be a lock as a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft.”

For this reason, Murray is reportedly expected to declare for the NFL draft before Monday’s deadline, according to Slusser

Still, the Athletics won’t let their highly regarded prospect go down without a fight. Jon Heyman of Fancred discussed his value on the baseball field:

Jon Heyman @JonHeyman

Top A’s execs are in Dallas meeting with Kyler Murray to try to convince him to stick with baseball. The Heisman trophy winner has until tomorrow to declare for NFL draft. Oakland gave him 4.6M bonus after making him a 1st rounder in MLB draft. Scouts love his bat and foot speed.

Per Leslie, even general manager Billy Beane went to meet with the young prospect.

This is what makes the guaranteed money so important. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was the last pick in the first round last season and still signed a four-year deal worth $9.47 million with a $4.97 million signing bonus. Murray could get at least that in the first round, and if he plays well, he could make at least $20 million per year by his fifth season.

In baseball, the player would have to get to the majors and then have three years before reaching arbitration, six before hitting free agency.

Giving him guaranteed money this week would likely ease some of his concerns about switching sports.

Anthony ‘The Mooch’ Scaramucci joins ‘Big Brother: Celebrity Edition’

For at least one former White House staffer, there is life after Donald Trump.

Anthony “The Mooch” Scaramucci is officially set as one of the 12 contestants who will be competing when Season 2 of Big Brother: Celebrity Edition premieres on Jan. 21. He’s presumably hoping he’ll last longer there than he did in the White House, where bad behavior cost him his job after just a week.

SEE ALSO: The darkest fake media in ‘Black Mirror’: A complete guide

The Mooch won’t be Big Brother‘s first ex-Trumper contestant. Omarosa Manigault Newman, who worked in the White House until Dec. 2017, made it as far as the Season 1 finale of Celebrity Edition in 2018, just a few months after she was unceremoniously fired from her government role.

Mooch joins a mall-star cast that includes: O.J. Simpson pal Kato Kaelin, controversial Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, Blossom star Joey Lawrence(!!), Lindsay Lohan’s mom and manager Dina Lohan, Mean Girls actor Jonathan Bennett, former wrestler Natalie Eva Marie, former NFL star Ricky Williams, track and bobsled star Lolo Jones, comedian Tom Green, and singers/reality personalities Tamar Braxton and Kandi Burruss.

The 12 of them will be competing for the show’s $250,000 prize, which will be awarded when the season finale airs on Feb. 13. You can check out the full CBS gallery of contestants right here.

The Season 2 casting is rife with eyebrow-raising names that span multiple generations, but few have generated more talk than the Mooch casting. Obviously. The guy had the shortest tenure as White House Press Secretary in U.S. history, and he quickly achieved infamy for his unfiltered chatter.

I wonder how many mooches The Mooch will last in the Big Brother house. #CBBUS2

Iran artist puts spotlight on water shortage through music

Images of glowing light danced to a slow electronic beat, as an indistinguishable instrument radiated sound resembling flowing water.

No more than a hundred people sat down in the darkened cavern in the northwest Iranian city of Qazvin, while listening to the tune played by electronic musician, Saba Alizadeh, who came up with the idea to highlight the ongoing water shortage in Iran.

A century ago, it would have been impossible for the artist to entertain his audience there. The facility, common across pre-modern Iran, was originally built to store drinking water underground for local residents in Qazvin, 140km northwest of capital, Tehran.

But for years now, most of these reservoirs have dried up turning the structures into relics of Iran’s past.

The brick-lined water reservoir, known as Ab-Anbar in the Persian language, is covered with a dome, protecting the stored water from evaporation and contamination. It is connected to a wind tower, known as badgir, which serves as a natural cooler of the water inside.

Iran: Drought epidemic fuels water crisis

These reservoirs were so important to life, particularly in the desert areas, that they became integrated into communities in arid regions of the country.

Alizadeh, the musician, saw an opportunity to revisit these architectural icons, in an effort to raise awareness about the country’s water crisis.

“Metaphorically speaking, the concerts were a recollection of the water that did not exist there in the reservoirs anymore,” Alizadeh told Al Jazeera.

“It is supposed to sound the alarm, reminding Iranians that in a place which used to be a depot for water, now there is only dirt.”

Recently, the research arm of the Iranian parliament warned that water shortage in the country could lead to social discontent. It added that by 2020, up to 80 percent of Iran’s more than 80 million people could face water scarcity.

‘Elegy for water’

So far, Alizadeh has performed his show, ‘Elegy for Water’ at reservoirs in the cities of Qazvin, Kerman and Shiraz. The 35-year-old musician plans to do more events in Kashan, Yazd and Isfahan, cities that in recent years have faced water shortages.

The water problem in these major cities has been exacerbated by poor infrastructures and government policies.

About 35 million Iranians, a little less than half of the total population, living across 334 cities faced water shortage during the summer of 2018, according to Iran’s Minister of Energy Reza Ardakanian.

Lack of awareness about the issue has further added to the problem.

“We are facing a severe drought… We don’t seem to pay attention to the things that are happening in this regard,” Alizadeh said.

“Perhaps this tour could be a very small gesture to remind people of water; so that they could appreciate it a bit more,” he said, referring to the wastage of water in the country.

Alizadeh came up with the idea of the musical piece in 2012, when he started to study music in California Institute for Arts, after he finished his bachelor’s degree in photography in Iran. It was only much later, when he decided to perform the piece at dried-up cisterns to highlight growing water problem.

Fusing music and religion

The musician uses Zanjeer – which is made of small chains hanging off a wooden handle – as a source for musical notes.

A dome protects the brick-lined water reservoir from evaporation and contamination [Erfan Dadkhah/Al Jazeera]

Zanjeer is mostly used during annual Ashura commemorations by Shias, who hit their bodies with the object to mourn the death of their third Imam.

Alizadeh installed a microphone at the end of Zanjeer’s handle to capture the granular sound made by the movement of the chains.

The rattling of the chains is then processed by a computer to become a sound that is reminiscent of that of flowing water.

“I wrote the harmonies within the sound of the water,” he explained.

The initial piece was completed with an overture that he wrote recently, turning ‘Elegy for Water’ into a 40-45 minutes long music.

‘Nailed to my chair’

The performance includes visuals created by artist Siavash Naghshbandi, who collaborated on the project. The images were an artistic perception of the reflections of water. They were projected on the walls of the water cisterns.

The musician uses Zanjeer, a chain used during Shia religious rites, as a musical instrument [Erfan Dadkhah/Al Jazeera]

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Naghshbandi referred to the “mysterious” quality of the forms that the flow of the water creates; as well as the irony of watching those visuals in a dried-up cistern.

“The images were projected on the ceiling. It was as if you saw the reflections of the water when you take a look above, knowing there is no water in the reservoir,” he said.

What can be done to ensure food security and preserve water resources?

Roshanka Sajadian, a Tehran-based architect, took a two-hour road trip to Qazvin to watch the show.

“The combination of the concept, the music and the location turned this into a curious event,” she told Al Jazeera.

“It was as if I was nailed to my chair, wiping tears off my face as the music rose to a crescendo.”

Andreas Spechtl, an Austrian musician who collaborated with Alizadeh on the project, told Al Jazeera that the artist is “mourning the loss of water, while treating a highly traditional and religious device, Zanjeer, as an electronic instrument.”

“One could call it conceptual art. But it’s not that easy, because there are no answers and no great solutions in his work. He is not making a big case. No. He’s now and then dropping a question. And that’s the noblest thing you can say about art.”

‘Super Mario Bros.’ theme is a killer song for a gymnastics routine

Video game music is a largely (but not entirely!) untapped treasure trove for the gymnasts of the world.

Brigham Young University gymnast Shannon Hortman-Evans took to the floor on Friday night to perform an impressive routine at a meet against the University of Utah — to the tune of the Super Mario Bros. theme.

SEE ALSO: This adorable couple has competed in ‘Mario Kart’ religiously since 2001

Unfortunately, the music is a little hard to hear over the commentators, but you can still catch little pieces of it here and there, including some parts of the main theme, coin noises, and the tune that plays when Mario grabs a Super Star.

The whole thing feels like a real-life version of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. The only thing we’re missing is a bunch of Toads and Shy Guys cheering Hortman-Evans on in the stands.

Even though we can’t hear most of the music, the routine itself is impressive enough to carry the moment. Evans scored a 9.900 out of 10 with all those flips, jumps, and moves.

Hopefully this will inspire some more video game-based floor routines. Maybe somebody could take on the haunting Halo theme next.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Sunday the Philadelphia Phillies have become the “clear-cut favorite” to land Harper, the co-crown jewel (with Manny Machado) of this free-agent class.

Harper met with the Phillies for five hours Saturday in Las Vegas. A formal contract offer was not made, but one is expected within the next week.
