After year of tragedy, how ready’s Indonesia for other disasters?

Medan, Indonesia – When a fatal tsunami last month battered the coastlines of the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra during a long holiday weekend days before Christmas, many on the shore could do little more than try to flee the surging waves on foot.

“What struck me … was how exposed people were,” Rosemarie North, Asia Pacific communications manager at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), told Al Jazeera.

“They live close to the sea along the coastline, which no doubt had been a beautiful and relaxing place for locals and tourists alike. When the tsunami came, they ran, if they could.”

North visited Java’s Banten province as part of the IFRC’s response to the humanitarian crisis caused by metres-high waves smashing into coastal settlements and popular resorts along Indonesia’s Sunda Strait on the evening of December 22. The tsunami is thought to have been caused by an eruption and subsequent landslide of the nearby volcanic island of Anak Krakatoa.

The wall of water that surged towards the shore killed more than 430 people and displaced some 30,000 others.

It was one of the most destructive disasters to hit Indonesia in 2018 – but it was hardly the first, or the worst, of its kind.

Just last year, 2,564 disasters killed thousands of people and displaced more than 10 million others across the country, a vast archipelago that sits of the Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, landslides and widespread flooding.

“In 2010, Indonesia had 84 active fault lines. But in 2017 a team of geologists found 295 active fault lines in the region,” Medi Herlianto, director of emergency facilities at Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), told Al Jazeera.

Government response

Responding to one of the deadliest years on record, the Indonesian government announced in early January that it is doubling its disaster relief budget for 2019 to 15 trillion rupiah ($1.06bn).

Nufransa Wira Sakti, spokesperson for the finance ministry, said that five trillion rupiah would be used for post-disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation, with another 10 trillion earmarked for pre-disaster response.

The move was welcomed by some as a positive step, but others warned that more is needed to address the root cause of many of the problems faced by the country in dealing with an ongoing spate of natural disasters.

“We need to mitigate disasters, not just respond to them once they have happened,” said Herlianto. “For every $1 we invest on disaster mitigation, we need to spend around $40 on response.”

As such, he said, it would be much cheaper and safer for Indonesia to implement infrastructure such as early warning systems and evacuation plans, rather than just distributing aid once a disaster has devastated a local community.

North agreed. “The government put an early warning system in place after the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, covering tsunami, flood, high tides, typhoon, and other hazards,” she said, referring to one of modern history’s worst natural disasters that killed more than 220,000 people, the vast majority of whom were in Indonesia.

“The system still needs significant improvement – this has been recently highlighted by the president of Indonesia – given the fact that the installed equipment is not proportional to the large number of critical points that need to be monitored in the country.”

Indonesians call for better response to tsunami disaster (2:11)

Last week, at the first cabinet meeting for 2019, Indonesian President Joko Widodo addressed concerns about the country’s ability to respond to a crisis. “Given our disaster-prone geographic conditions, we must be prepared, responsive, alert and resilient in facing any natural disaster,” he said.

For Herlianto, a major issue is responsibility for disaster management at a district and city level lies with local authorities and not with the central government.

He said that “480 districts and cities around Indonesia have a local disaster management agency, but only 10 of these have a comprehensive disaster management plan in place,” adding that BNPB has been providing training nationwide but local disaster management agencies often fail to implement disaster preparedness plans properly.

The impact on tourism

There are also concerns that if Indonesia cannot demonstrate a comprehensive response to disasters, its  vital tourism sector could take a hit.

In recent years, the government has rolled out its “10 New Balis” scheme in an attempt to boost tourist numbers by encouraging visitors to venture to other parts of the country – other than the popular resort island.

Stuart McDonald, co-founder of Travelfish.org, an independent travel guide to Southeast Asia, argued that there is an essential paradox between Indonesia’s tourism marketing and its disaster response.

“Indonesia uses its volcano-dotted position on the Ring of Fire heavily in its tourism promotions. But when it comes to doing the hard yards investing in safety to make these activities actually relatively safe, for both domestic and foreign tourists, Indonesia is found badly wanting,” he told Al Jazeera.

“It seems nobody has as much practice at responding to disasters as Indonesia, which makes the sometimes haphazard response all the more frustrating. Often post-disaster changes which could reduce the chance of future issues are not followed through.”

Financial and emotional toll

Against all this, local residents continue to live in fear.

“We can’t think about the future,” Andi Karim, a 32-year-old resident of Rajabasa village in Sumatra who saw his house partially destroyed when the tsunami hit, told Al Jazeera.

“We’ve no money and we’re traumatised. And we’re scared to be here on the coast at night. In the dark, we can’t see if another wave is coming.”

He is not alone in feeling this way.

During her time in Banten, North visited a local mosque on a hillside in Kampung Sirih which was being used as a shelter for around 300 tsunami-hit women and children, many of whom had experienced natural disasters before.

“I met a woman who’d had to take off about four years ago too, when a twister came through the coast and destroyed her shop. She and her three children are safe again this year, but the experience left her quite nervous,” said North.

“She had a sense another disaster would befall her.”

Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma’s Lakers Upset by Cavaliers Without LeBron James

LeBron James remains out with a strained groin, but the Cleveland Cavaliers were able to get some revenge against his new team with a 101-95 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

Collin Sexton scored 17 and Tristan Thompson added 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Cavs snapped their 12-game losing streak with their first win since Dec. 18. Of course, Cleveland still has the worst record in the NBA at 9-35, the only team in the league without double-digit wins.

The Lakers are now just 3-7 without James, falling to 23-21 despite 29 points and nine rebounds from Kyle Kuzma. Lonzo Ball had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the disappointing home loss.

Lakers’ Struggles Without LeBron Paint Bleak Picture

James has now missed 10 games and could miss a few more. His groin is reportedly “progressing,” but he won’t be evaluated again until Jan. 16, according to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.

We have seen enough to know that this Lakers team is not very good without him.

Los Angeles had lost six of its last nine games, but this might have been the worst performance of the season against arguably the worst team in the NBA.

The offense was especially embarrassing against a historically bad defense:

Joe Vardon @joevardon

Statistically speaking, the Cavs have the worst defense of all time. Tonight they’ve kept the Lakers to 74 points with 7:39 left

Boogie Bousins @bansky

Cavs have the worst record in the league. The worst road record. Hace lost 12 straight. And they have the worst defensive rating in the league (by 3.5 whole ass points) by far.

The Lakers probably wont hit 90 on them.

This is how coaches get fired

This probably summed it up the best:

Amir Blumenfeld @jakeandamir

I mean, I know the Lakers don’t have LeBron tonight, but neither do the Cavs.

There were some good individual performances from Kuzma and Brandon Ingram (22 points), while Ball filled up the stat sheet. However, they were still outplayed by Cleveland, each finishing at least minus-13 on the court.

The young trio also didn’t salvage an offense that was miserable in nearly every metric. The team shot just 39.6 percent from the field, including 7-of-34 from three-point range. Shooting 59.3 percent from the free-throw line at home is also cringe-worthy.

Outside of Kuzma scoring 41 points in a win over the Detroit Pistons and Ingram taking over against the Dallas Mavericks, these offensive struggles are pretty much what we have come to expect over the past couple of weeks.

The defensive effort also hasn’t been there with the players looking lazy and disinterested at times, also failing to put up much resistance down the stretch:

NBA @NBA

Collin Sexton shake and bake! 👀🔥

#BeTheFight @NBATV https://t.co/lCSyrH3Qmp

Bleacher Report NBA @BR_NBA

Cavs are taking it to the Lakers right now 😬 https://t.co/rm0hgCfCAY

This hasn’t left many positives to take away from this stretch without James.

While the four-time MVP returning to the court will mask some of these deficiencies, the poor play around him will likely hold this team back.

Throughout his time in Cleveland, we saw James having to carry the team in the playoffs with a win or loss dependent on him having an incredible performance. There was hope things would be different with the Lakers thanks to the young core and the experienced veterans on the roster, but it seems to be more of the same.

There is still time for these players to improve, but LeBron is in trouble based on these recent performances.

What’s Next?

The Cavaliers will continue their road trip Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Lakers will have only one day off before hosting the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday.

Manny Machado Rumors: White Sox Offer 8-Year Contract; Phillies Still in the Mix

Only a few teams are apparently still in the running for Manny Machado, although the Chicago White Sox have an offer for an eight-year deal on the table for the free-agent shortstop, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The Philadelphia Phillies are still engaged with Machado as well, while a third mystery team is also in the hunt.

Both the White Sox and the Phillies have been targeting him throughout the offseason, while each has used personal relationships to try to sway the four-time All-Star.

Philadelphia recently hired former Baltimore Orioles third base coach Bobby Dickerson, who, as Matt Gelb of The Athletic noted, is a mentor to Machado. The two worked together from the time Machado was drafted in 2010 until he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.

Additionally, Chicago signed outfielder Jon Jay, who, along with Yonder Alonso, grew up with Machado in Miami and remains good friends with him, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Still, it could all come down to the length and money on the contract.

Though all the offers aren’t yet known, the White Sox are clearly serious about this pursuit based on the eight-year deal, which would be the longest the organization has ever given out.

Meanwhile, both teams are reportedly also in pursuit of free-agent outfielder Bryce Harper.

Stephen Curry is not ready to hand the MVP race over to Giannis Antetokounmpo and James Harden just yet.

The Golden State Warriors guard led his team to a 119-114 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in Sunday’s showdown at American Airlines Center with 48 points, six rebounds and five assists behind 11-of-19 shooting from downtown.

One of those triples came with less than a minute remaining in a tie game to put the visitors ahead for good.

Luka Doncic countered with 26 points, six rebounds and five assists, but the rookie didn’t have the firepower to counter the two-time MVP down the stretch.

Curry has now scored 35 or more points in three of five January games and has spearheaded a four-game winning streak for the two-time defending champions.

Canadian air traffic controllers send pizza to U.S. colleagues working without pay

It's not a paycheck, but it's a sign of solidarity.
It’s not a paycheck, but it’s a sign of solidarity.

It’s the fourth week of Donald Trump’s government shutdown, with around 800,000 federal employees working without pay since Dec. 22.

That includes air traffic controllers, like those working in the New York Air Traffic Control Center, who, while they’re still waiting for their paychecks, received a tasty symbol of solidarity from their colleagues across the Canadian border.

SEE ALSO: Jimmy Kimmel gives federal employees work during Trump’s shutdown

Canadian air traffic controllers from the Atlantic province towns of Gander and Moncton ordered pizzas for the crew working at the control center in Ronkonkoma, Long Island on Friday, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

Pointed out by the news outlet, a notice was posted up in the hallway of the centre heralding the arrival of 32 pies courtesy of the Canadian Air Traffic Controller Association (CATCA).

An image of the notice was posted to Reddit by David Lombardo, a former air traffic controller at the Long Island center, and was posted by other employees on Twitter.

This wasn’t the only U.S. air traffic control center to receive some cheesy goodness from their Canadian counterparts.

Ever since controllers in Edmonton reportedly ordered pizzas for their colleagues in Anchorage, Alaska on Thursday, Canadian control centers have sent pizzas to 35 U.S. units including those in Boston, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Cleveland.

What started as one gesture of #solidarity from YEG ACC controllers to those in ANC, is now a pizza wave with CATCA ACC and Tower members sending pizzas all over the US. Our CATCA members stand with our @NATCA brothers and sisters!

— CATCA (@CATCA5454) January 13, 2019

The best bit? The initiative came directly from Canadian employees themselves, something Ron Singer, spokesman for Nav Canada, which owns and operates Canada’s civil air navigation industry, congratulated them on while talking to HuffPost Canada.

“We are very proud of the thoughtfulness that our controllers have shown to their colleagues in the U.S., proud but not surprised,” he told the news outlet.

Doug Church, deputy director of public affairs for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) in the U.S. told CBC there are 14,000 controllers currently working without pay.

In fact, on Friday, NATCA announced it is suing the federal government for its members working without pay thanks to Trump’s shutdown over funding for his border wall.

The association had already joined other aviation groups in penning an open letter to officials, urging the government to resolve the shutdown.

So, while an actual paycheck what U.S. air traffic controllers really need, a show of support and solidarity in the form of pizza is a solid “hang in there” from across the border.

“It’s just a really good shot in the arm of positive energy and positive emotion to know that, ‘Hey they’ve got our back,’” Church told CBC. “On behalf of the entire NATCA and air traffic control around this country, we extend our thanks and our gratitude.”

Watch China’s Chang’e-4 probe land on the far side of the moon

By Johnny Lieu

On Jan. 2, China stunned the world by landing its Chang’e-4 probe on the far side of the moon.

Now, you can watch its descent onto the lunar surface, with footage released by the China National Space Administration on Friday

The video shows the probe finding its way to the Von Kármán Crater, where it will study the surface on the far side of the moon, which always faces away from Earth.

State media reports that the mission includes “low-frequency radio astronomical observation, surveying the terrain and landforms, detecting the mineral composition and shallow lunar surface structure, and measuring neutron radiation and neutral atoms.”

Drew Brees Lifts Saints to NFC Championship with Win vs. Nick Foles, Eagles

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - JANUARY 13: Michael Thomas #13 and Drew Brees #9 of the New Orleans Saints celebrate their third quarter touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Playoff Game at Mercedes Benz Superdome on January 13, 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The New Orleans Saints advanced to the NFC Championship Game for the third time in franchise history after beating the Philadelphia Eagles 20-14 in the divisional round on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Drew Brees powered the Saints in the win, throwing for 301 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Alvin Kamara had 106 yards from scrimmage, while Michael Thomas caught 12 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown.

In what’s likely to be his last game with the team, Nick Foles finished with 201 yards, one touchdown and an interception.

The Eagles got the ball to the Saints’ 27-yard line with one minute, 52 seconds left in the game to get into position for a possible go-ahead score. Alshon Jeffery let a Foles pass slip through his hands and into the arms of New Orleans cornerback Marshon Lattimore to deny Philadelphia’s comeback attempt.

Saints Running Game Will Determine Outcome in Rematch vs. Rams

As much as Brees means to the Saints, the duo of Kamara and Mark Ingram will most likely set the tone for New Orleans in the conference title game.

In their matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Rams held Ezekiel Elliott to 47 yards on 20 carries. The Cowboys gained just 308 yards as a team.

Los Angeles also held the ball for 36 minutes, 13 seconds, keeping the Dallas defense on the field for long stretches. The Rams defensive line dominated the Cowboys up front, and that had a domino effect for the rest of the game.

The Saints can counteract that with Kamara and Ingram, who ran for 115 yards in their 45-35 victory earlier this year.

Neither Kamara nor Ingram had a big game against the Eagles, but they both delivered key runs in the fourth quarter to help the Saints seal the win.

Ingram broke free for a 36-yard run to get New Orleans into Philadelphia territory on a drive that culminated in a 39-yard field goal by Wil Lutz to give the home team a six-point lead.

New Orleans Saints @Saints

#HomeInTheDome | #PHIvsNO https://t.co/jE2Nw3sB3g

Kamara got the critical first down run on what proved to be the final possession of the game. On 3rd-and-10 with 1:03 remaining, he gained 12 yards to move the chains and allow the Saints to run off the remaining time on the clock.

New Orleans already beat the Rams once in a shootout. They’d be better off trying to slow down the pace a bit more in the second go-round in order to keep Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, Robert Woods and Los Angeles’ high-powered offense off the field.

What’s Next?

The Saints will play the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC title game, with kickoff scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET on Jan. 20.

Judge freezes Trump administration contraception rule

The administration’s efforts reignited a fierce battle over one of the health care law’s most controversial provisions and quickly prompted legal challenges. | Rich Pedroncelli, File/AP Photo

Health Care

The new rules would let employers refuse to cover birth control by citing religious or moral objections.

A federal judge in California blocked a Trump administration rule that was set to go into effect Monday — one that would have allowed virtually any employer to refuse to cover workers’ birth control by citing religious or moral objections.

U.S. District Judge Haywood Gilliam ruled the policy would cause harm to the Democratic states suing over the rules, and he issued an order staying the rules from going into effect while the lawsuit proceeds. The temporary block is just for the states involved in the lawsuit.

Story Continued Below

The new rules mark the administration’s second attempt to expand a workaround to a requirement stemming from Obamacare to provide FDA-approved contraception at no cost. The first attempt was halted in 2017 after courts found the administration tried to implement the change without giving the public the opportunity to weigh in. Houses of worship and closely-held private companies with religious objections are currently exempted from the requirement.

The decision on issuing an injunction hinged on whether the court believed people will suffer irreparable harm from President Donald Trump’s policy. HHS estimated that between 6,400 and 127,000 women will lose coverage of contraceptives under the rule, but reproductive rights advocates argued millions more could potentially be impacted.

The administration’s efforts reignited a fierce battle over one of the health care law’s most controversial provisions and quickly prompted legal challenges.

The states sought nationwide injunctions, arguing the administration again violated administrative procedure and that the rule would undercut the health care law and unconstitutionally discriminate against women.

In a similar case, Democratic attorneys general challenged the revised version of the rule on Thursday at the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia. The court has not yet ruled on the request for an injunction but may do so by Monday.

Gilliam, the California judge, heard arguments Friday on the states’ request to block the rules. The states receiving an injunction Sunday evening include: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington state, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

“The law couldn’t be more clear — employers have no business interfering in women’s healthcare decisions,” California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement Sunday evening. “Today’s court ruling stops another attempt by the Trump Administration to trample on women’s access to basic reproductive care.”

A story of an online stalker takes a bizarre turn down the rabbit hole

2018%2f04%2f02%2f74%2fheadshot.edeb7By Morgan Sung

Buckle up — this Twitter thread is a wild ride.

A serial plagiarist was caught in a lie — really, many lies — after making up a fake story for an Instagram caption, and it shines a light on the harassment women in tech face.

In a now-deleted post, a software developer Tee Medlin — supposed software developer, since who knows what’s true anymore — claimed that a woman who was pictured but not named was stalking him during a tech conference.

SEE ALSO: Self-driving robots and cars deliver food to techies and college students

“Has not stopped following me around, asking me questions, and telling me about her life since I got off stage this evening,” read his caption. “Now its social hour and I have a shadow. HELP!”

Except it was all fake. Condon had never met Medlin, and the photo was taken from an article she wrote three years ago.

Wow. I’ve been harassed online before, but @teemedlin– I have no idea who you are, nor was I at a conference/meet-up/event w/ you 4 days ago. Lying about this is next level- also, ++ photo is from my @NewCo article I published years ago/from a conference 3 years ago. Get a life. pic.twitter.com/tk3Vc2zhLX

— Chloe Condon 🎀 (@ChloeCondon) January 11, 2019

When a Twitter follower asked if the photo was of her, Condon thought she had been included in another round-up list of women in cryptocurrency because “it felt click-baity.”

“Once I read the caption and saw the comment, I was furious,” she said in a private message exchange. “As a woman online and in tech shitty things are said/commented about me all the time — but this was a whole new level of WTF-ery that I had not experienced yet.”

In comments on the post, Medlin stuck to his story.

“There are a lot of folks on Twitter saying ‘This must be a bot!’ and ‘He’s AI!,’ but as someone working in tech with a pretty good knowledge [of] the advancements in ML/AI, sadly we’re not there yet,” Condon said. “This is just a very mentally disturbed person who has somehow developed a persona in the last 5-ish years.”

And as the Twitter thread unpacks, we learn that Medlin’s “persona” runs deep — dude’s been plagiarizing all over Instagram and social media. From taking credit for another developer’s talk to pretending that he was interviewed in a robotics publication, on screen, Medlin made himself appear to be a major player in tech.

And he has a habit of posting stock photos and news footage to make up bizarre self-congratulatory stories in his social media captions.

Twitter users also dug into Medlin’s Pinterest account, where he claimed to hang out with the most bizarre group of public figures. Is there any person who’s friends with both Mitt Romney and Seth Rogen?

The Rogen photo turned out to be something other than a Photoshop, in fact. As it turned out, this is just a wax replica of the actor, as seen at the Hollywood Wax Museum.

Moving on….

To add to the wild ride, another Twitter user pointed out that Medlin’s dog is also named Chloe — though that’s probably just a coincidence.

Ok @ChloeCondon, I think I have another good @teemedlin one for you!

Two, maybe three, days of posts that are probably all taken at once as the same sweater features and the hats are all in the car, along with the same box of donuts, ground debris appears identical. pic.twitter.com/AAavZc6d9x

— Nicole (@nicolewashere84) January 12, 2019

Although Condon says she usually takes people’s online presence “with a grain of salt,” the bizarre experience has also made her “much more careful” about who she’s willing to meet. The whole thing has also put her “in a spiral of questioning of how deeply someone could make up their career, family, accolades, credentials, etc.”

Since the thread went viral, Tee Medlin has deleted his Twitter account and appears to have revamped his Instagram account as well. Before doing so, he tweeted that his account was hacked and claimed that someone else was accusing Condon of stalking them.

You changed your Instagram handle last night, so I think you’ve known about me before this morning… Now please explain your Facebook posts dating back several years 🤔 pic.twitter.com/f6blEi5NpI

— Chloe Condon 🎀 (@ChloeCondon) January 12, 2019

On Facebook, he posted about a “disgruntled past employee or coworker” hacking his account and complained about getting cyberbullied. (To be clear, whatever this guy did, bullying of any kind is bad. Don’t add to the wrongs done here. The authorities are handling things now.)

On Sunday, Condon filed a police report against Tee Medlin. When asked how she thinks social networks could prevent blatant plagiarism and harassment like this, Condon emphasized the importance of calling out lies.

“What’s funny is that i have personally known several individuals who have been pathological liars,” she said, nodding to a theater peer who would constantly lie about the strangest things. “Looking back, I’m now realizing that none of us ever called him out on it — we just watched it all unfold and talked about it on our drives home.”

Several people who claimed to know Medlin personally DM’d Condon to tell her he’s lied like this for “as long as they’ve known him.”

“I think the pure happenstance that he posted this photo of me, and I was alerted of it, and that my followers started investigating is pretty surreal,” she reflected.

It appears that Medlin has been stopped — for now. But Condon is still wary of the way people present themselves on social media. And if this Medlin character is really just some kind of weird, rogue AI, she’s impressed.

“However, if I’m wrong, and this is very good AI- congrats to whoever built it because this is groundbreaking work, my friend,” Condon quipped.

With additional reporting by Adam Rosenberg.

Tom Brady-Bill Belichick Dynasty Isn’t Done Embarrassing Rest of NFL Just Yet

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady left and head coach Bill Belichick speak on the sideline during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the New York Jets, Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018, in Foxborough, Mass. (AP Photo/Steven Senne)

Steven Senne/Associated Press

The game started with Old Man Brady and Old Man Belichick limping onto the field, taking their vitamins, tossing their crutches aside and embarking on the longest playoff-opening drive of their many years together.

The Patriots—portrayed so often in recent weeks as doers of pool aerobics and watchers of blood pressure—removed their bifocals and went 83 yards in 14 plays against a Chargers defense that smothered the Ravens a week ago. The drive lasted an astounding seven minutes, 11 seconds, and 71-year-old Tom Brady and the Patriots converted four third downs along the way.

And like that, they reminded us what we always seem to forget: Nothing stops this team. Not even age. They are Jason. They are a vampire. They are the Terminator. They are impossible to kill.

Just when you count them out, they poke you in the eye. When you think Bill Belichick has lost it, he puts on a doctorate-level coaching clinic. If Brady has fallen off a cliff—hell, that is one gorgeous cliff.

Los Angeles tried that seven-defensive-backs defense that worked so well for it against Baltimore, and Belichick’s scheme and Brady’s execution obliterated it. They used a series of short passes and a physical running game that stretched the field horizontally, drew the Chargers to the line of scrimmage and then blew them off it.

It would only get worse, ending with a 41-28 score that was much closer than the game.

Charles Krupa/Associated Press

The Patriots will play at Kansas City next Sunday in the AFC title game. The matchup will be among the most interesting in recent years. The Chiefs have some of the brightest young stars in the game; the Patriots, well, don’t. Brady may not really be 71, but he is 41, and their most dominant player of recent years, tight end Rob Gronkowski, has a body that ages in dog years.

Yet, for a team that was supposed to be getting knee replacements and telling everyone how they used to walk to school uphill both ways, boy, do the Patriots look spritely all of a sudden.

They aren’t ready for those social security checks just yet.

After Sunday’s game, there was a rare moment of Brady showing his true feelings about how the Patriots are perceived outside of New England. When CBS’s Tracy Wolfson asked Brady about playing the Chiefs, he responded: “It’ll be a good game. They’re a good team. We played them earlier this year. You know, I know everyone thinks we suck. Can’t win any games. So, we’ll see. It’ll be fun.”

Well, damn, Tom.

That’s how driven Brady is. Even after all the titles and the team and individual accolades, and after destroying the Chargers, he has that chip on his shoulder. The chip is older and showing some wear and tear, but it’s still there and still pushing him.

The Patriots physically punished the Chargers in ways that team hadn’t experienced this year. By halftime, the Patriots had a 35-7 lead, 347 total yards, 24 first downs (to the Chargers’ six) and a 10-minute time-of-possession advantage.

Slowing down with age? Not a team coached by Belichick. The Patriots manhandled the Chargers on the field, and the strategy behind the manhandling was even more interesting. Belichick must have known that seven-DB scheme was coming, and he attacked it. The Patriots averaged 8.2 yards per play in their first 25 plays against L.A.’s seven-DB defense, per ESPN Stats and Info

The Ravens’ coaching staff looked totally overwhelmed, averaging 3.9 yards a play in 59 plays.

One of the players who was supposed to be headed toward retirement was Gronkowski. At times this season, the 29-year-old looked like he could barely walk. On Sunday, he could be seen ferociously engaging two blockers on one play and then on the next—a short touchdown run by Sony Michel on 1st-and-goal near the end the first half—blowing up linebacker Hayes Pullard off the ball and tossing him aside like he was bag of groceries.

In another example of the Patriots’ brutality, in the third quarter, after Gronkowski made a catch in the middle, someone’s mouthpiece went flying after some initial contact. Gronkowski kept rumbling.

That’s old-man strength right there.

There are times, it seems, we take these Patriots victories for granted. We watch Brady and Belichick and respond with a shrug when we should respond with their own wing of the Hall of Fame.

If you dismiss their greatness because you hate them or think they only win because they cheat, you don’t get it. What they are doing isn’t about that. It never was, and it never will be.

It’s about how they seem dead and then roar back to life. How they seem slow and then run right by you.

The Chargers couldn’t stop them. Can the Chiefs? Can anyone?
