These googly-eyed robotic assistants are being rolled out in supermarkets

The robots are coming, and they’ll be bearing googly eyes.

Marty, as it’s called, is a tall, gray robotic assistant that will be introduced to Giant Food Stores, a supermarket chain which operates in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

SEE ALSO: PepsiCo is using robots to deliver snacks to college students

The robots will be introduced in the coming months to 172 outlets, and will trundle around stores to identify hazards like spills, allowing staffers to spend more time serving customers.

According to The Washington Post, Marty uses a camera to scan the floor for hazards. Once identified, Marty will alert nearby customers by verbally telling them “caution, hazard detected,” then will send an alert through the store’s PA system.

Marty can also scan shelves to identify what items are out of stock, and can also do price checks to ensure there aren’t discrepancies between what’s on the shelf and the store’s database.

Anyway, here’s Marty dawdling around a store.

“Bringing robotics and A.I. from a research lab to the sales floor has been a very exciting journey, and we were thrilled by the customer response in our pilot stores,” Nicholas Bertram, president of Giant Food Stores, said in a statement via email.

A spokesperson for Giant Food Stores told PennLive that the robot won’t be used to replace employees. However, retail is one of those industries which is very susceptible to job losses due to automation.

Can’t keep up with the news? Samuel L. Jackson and Jimmy Fallon poetry slam it for you.

Donald Trump’s border wall. The U.S. government shutdown. Who’s hosting the Oscars. There’s a lot of news to keep track of right now.

So, Jimmy Fallon and Captain Marvel star Samuel L. Jackson rounded it all up for you, in one handy poetry slam.

The pair took turns on the mic on The Tonight Show on Monday to explain what the hell is going on across the country right now, in the required black turtleneck and hat combo.

Trump’s fast food spread at the White House has the internet talking

Now the longest in history, the U.S. government shutdown has led to some unusual things happening.

Like for Donald Trump, who on Monday, during his imposed shutdown over funding for his border wall, hosted the Clemson Tigers, crowned the best college football team in the country last week.

SEE ALSO: Trump, for some reason, lies about not having left the White House when he clearly has

You’d expect a fancy feast when visiting the White House, but the shutdown meant that many of its staff were furloughed. So, Trump — who said he paid for it himself — decided to put on a spread of fast food for the visiting champions, consisting of items from McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Dominos.

Trump told reporters earlier that day that he “would think that’s their favorite food.”

TRUMP says he plans to serve the Clemson national championship football team “McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King with some pizza” when they visit the White House tonight.

“I would think that’s their favorite food,” he says, earnestly. 😳 pic.twitter.com/Gup28pERfh

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) January 14, 2019

And he wasn’t joking: There were stacks of (very patriotic) burgers, pizza, fries, and nuggets arranged on silver platters in the White House’s dining room.

“I like it all. I like it all. It’s all good stuff, great American food. And it’s going to be very interesting to see at the end of this evening how many are left,” Trump told reporters.

President Trump welcomed the NCAA national champion Clemson Tigers football team to the White House with a shutdown smorgasbord of fast food offerings he called “great American food,” including piles of pizza and fries and more than 300 burgers. https://t.co/OVBdfzv4wg pic.twitter.com/dzEztYbia1

Naturally, the internet had much to say about the banquet, like the guy lighting candles, as you do when you’re about to dine on some Quarter Pounders and Filet O’ Fish.

candles are an essential component of any catered fast food meal

Or the fancy gravy boats, which for this occasion were used to hold dipping sauces.

White House Staffer, choking through tears – “I… guess… we could… use the… Lincoln gravy boats… for the… Mc… the McNug… the McNugget sauces.” 😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/cLxJeYnBwr

— W. Kamau Bell (@wkamaubell) January 15, 2019

Many picked up the portrait of Abe Lincoln in the background, merely witnessing the scene beneath him.

One Clemson player was reportedly heard saying: “Our nutritionist must be having a fit.”

It was certainly an interesting sight.

Although it’s unusual, the Clemson players dug in. And hey, we would’ve done so too, although what’s the bet the food would’ve already been lukewarm.

Although it’s often highlighted Trump has a penchant for fast food, his predecessor Barack Obama was also a big fan of cheeseburgers — albeit arguably better iterations from Shake Shack and Five Guys (don’t @ me on the latter, please).

Anyway, this whole thing is totally a reenactment from Richie Rich.

Houston Rockets guard James Harden made NBA history in style on Monday.

Harden poured in 57 points on 17-of-33 shooting from the field and 6-of-15 shooting from three-point range in his team’s 112-94 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at the Toyota Center. It was the 17th straight game he scored at least 30 points, surpassing Kobe Bryant‘s post-ABA-NBA merger record.

It was also quite the bounce-back effort for the Arizona State product, who tied a more dubious record during Sunday’s 116-109 loss to the Orlando Magic. He was just 1-of-17 from deep in that game, tying Damon Stoudamire’s mark for the most three-pointers missed in a game.

Houston needed Harden’s prolific scoring against Memphis seeing how Chris Paul is still out with a hamstring injury. What’s more, ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported big man Clint Capela will miss four to six weeks due to a right thumb injury.

As long as Harden is scoring at a record pace, the Rockets figure to remain in the middle of the Western Conference playoff chase as they wait for their other key cogs to return.

James Harden Breaks Kobe Bryant’s Record for Most Games with 30 or More in a Row

Houston Rockets star James Harden dropped 57 points in a 112-94 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night, and in doing so, he made NBA history.

Harden has now scored at least 30 points in 17 straight games, surpassing Kobe Bryant for the longest such streak since the 1976 ABA-NBA merger.

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

The Beard continues his historic scoring tear. https://t.co/AkVjLPjMgz

Harden has taken his game to another level over the past month. During his ongoing streak, he’s averaging 41.3 points. As a result, the six-time All-Star is basically in a dead heat with Giannis Antetokounmpo in the 2019 MVP race.

The Rockets (25-18) have needed every bit of his outrageous scoring to maintain a spot in the top eight of the Western Conference, and Houston may have to lean even more on the reigning MVP going forward.

Chris Paul hasn’t played since the team’s 101-99 defeat to the Miami Heat on Dec. 20 after picking up a hamstring injury, and Eric Gordon has missed Houston’s last eight games due to a knee injury.

ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski also reported Monday that Clint Capela will be out four to six weeks to recover from ligament damage in his right thumb, leaving the short-handed Rockets in a bigger bind.

With the way Harden is playing, Houston might be able to keep its head above water long enough until it’s back to full strength ahead of the playoffs.

Scientists in Hong Kong claim antiviral breakthrough

Scientists in Hong Kong say they have made a potential breakthrough discovery in the fight against infectious diseases – a chemical that could slow the spread of deadly viral illnesses.

In a study published this month in the journal Nature Communications, a team from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) described the newly discovered chemical as “highly potent in interrupting the life cycle of diverse viruses”.

The scientists told AFP news agency on Monday that it could one day be used as a broad-spectrum antiviral for a host of infectious diseases – and even for viruses that have yet to emerge – if it passes clinical trials.

The spread in recent decades of sometimes deadly bird flu strains, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) have underscored the need for new drugs that can work more quickly than vaccines.

Broad-spectrum antivirals are seen as the holy grail because they can be used against multiple pathogens.

In contrast, vaccines usually only protect against one strain, and by the time they are produced the virus may have mutated.

The HKU team tested their chemical “AM580” on mice in a two-year study and found it stopped the replication of a host of flu strains – including H1N1, H5N1 and H7N9 – as well as the viruses that cause SARS and MERS.

It also stopped the replication of the mosquito-borne Zika virus and Enterovirus 71 which causes hand, foot and mouth disease.

“This is what we call a broad-spectrum antiviral drug, which means it can kill a number of viruses,” microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung, who led the team, told AFP.

“This is quite important in the early control of an epidemic.”

Cancer-detecting breath test being trialled in UK (1:56)

Starving the virus

The study is part of a growing body of research by virologists to find drugs that avoid targeting a virus directly – something which could lead to resistance. Instead they look for compounds that interrupt the way viruses use crucial fatty acids, known as lipids, within a host’s cells to replicate.

“This study is science in progress – an early step in an exciting new direction,” said Benjamin Neuman, an expert on viruses at Texas A&M University-Texarkana who has published his own studies on starving viruses of lipids.

“Viruses are totally dependent on supplies stolen from their hosts, and a number of recent studies have shown that treatments that interrupt the steady flow of lipids in an infected cell are highly effective at blocking a wide range of viruses,” he told AFP.

The next step is to test the drug on a wider variety of animals, including pigs and primates, before pushing to clinical trials, a process Yuen said could take up to eight years.

The HKU team have applied for a patent in the United States.

A derivative of AM580 is already being used in Japan to treat cancer, raising hopes that it will show low toxicity for humans.

But Neuman warns there are drawbacks.

Like many chemotherapy methods used to fight cancer, antivirals such as AM580 damage a person’s cells to starve a virus. While cells can heal, much research still needs to be done on how and when to use such techniques.

“Unless the treatment is targeted very carefully, the potential for side effects would be very worrying,” he said.

Densely populated Hong Kong has first-hand experience of deadly viral outbreaks.

In 2003, nearly 300 people died from SARS and the city’s densely packed apartment blocks are considered hugely vulnerable to future outbreaks.

The 17-year-old powerhouse cast as Maria in ‘West Side Story’ has a treasure trove of YouTube videos

Landing one of the most coveted roles in musical theatre, 17-year-old Rachel Zegler has beat out over 30,000 auditions to be cast as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.

But the best part of this casting news is that Zegler, a self-proclaimed “theatre kid” has a treasure trove of YouTube and Twitter videos showing her belt everything from Karaoke favorite “Part of your world” to Queen and Lady Gaga hits.

As per Deadline, the New Jersey high school student will make her debut in Spielberg’s remake, alongside Baby Driver‘s Ansel Elgort as Tony, Broadway veterans Ariana DeBose and David Alvarez as Anita and Bernardo, Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino, and the already-announced legend Rita Moreno, who won an Academy Award for her performance as Anita in the 1961 movie.

SEE ALSO: Please enjoy Ariana Grande belting a song from ‘Wicked’ with perfect green makeup

According to the publisher, Spielberg and his production team set out to cast the film with performers from the Puerto Rican and broader Latinx community.

Zegler, who is Colombian-American, reportedly saw a notice posted on Twitter in January 2018, which was calling for Latinx actors to audition. She submitted a video of herself singing two songs from the musical, “Tonight” and “Me Siento Hermosa” (“I Feel Pretty”).

“I am so thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Maria alongside this amazing cast,” Zegler told Deadline. “West Side Story was the first musical I encountered with a Latina lead character. As a Colombian-American, I am humbled by the opportunity to play a role that means so much to the Hispanic community.”

Zegler is one talented teenager, something you can tell from her YouTube and Twitter videos — including those which show she’s already nailed the part of Maria in a performance of West Side Story at Bergen Performing Arts Center in New Jersey.

But it’s her covers of both pop music and musical theater numbers, with minimal production, that really stand out. Her killer rendition of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” from A Star Is Born gained over 5.54 million views.

In fact, Zegler’s been covering Lady Gaga for some time now on her YouTube channel — she’s nailed a fair few A Star Is Born covers — along with a bucketload of Queen, like this casually excellent cover of “Love of My Life.”

But of course, being cast as a lead in one of the most iconic musicals of all time, Zegler is right into musical theatre, covering songs from Broadway shows like Hamilton, Mean Girls, Waitress, In the Heights, Rent, Dear Evan Hansen and some Disney favourites, often from her bathroom. It’s all in the acoustics, right?

And guys, she even tackled the Les Miserables Big Ones, “I Dreamed a Dream,” and “On My Own.” Chills.

But seriously, this rendition of “Part of Your World,” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid is pure fire. Jodi Benson’s notes are not easy to smash, and Zegler nails it.

Go and watch all her vids, guys. She’s about to be everywhere, and pitch-perfectly at that.

Filming for West Side Story is reportedly set to start in the summer of 2019, and will be released by Twentieth Century Fox. Sit tight.

Tyus Battle’s 32 Lead Syracuse to Shocking Upset Win over Zion Williamson, Duke

DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA - JANUARY 14: Tyus Battle #25 of the Syracuse Orange drives against RJ Barrett #5 of the Duke Blue Devils during the first half of their game at Cameron Indoor Stadium on January 14, 2019 in Durham, North Carolina. (Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images)

Syracuse handed Duke its second loss of the season as the No. 1 team in the country couldn’t overcome the absences of Tre Jones and Cam Reddish.

Tyus Battle scored 32 points for the Orange in the 95-91 upset win at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Monday night.

ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo

No. 1 ranked Duke loses to unranked Syracuse 95-91 in OT.

It is the first time that a top-ranked Duke team has lost at home to an unranked opponent. They were 90-0 entering tonight.

Reddish (illness) missed the game and Jones suffered a shoulder injury in the first half, putting a lot of pressure on the rest of Duke’s roster. Zion Williamson had 35 points and 10 rebounds and RJ Barrett added 23 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the disappointing home loss.

The Blue Devils fell to 14-2 on the season, while Syracuse is now 12-5, including 3-0 in true road games.

Tre Jones Injury Exposes Duke’s Lack of Depth

Although he has often been overlooked this year with so much talent around him, Jones is an outstanding college player and a key part of the Blue Devils’ success this season.

His value might not have been appreciated until he suffered a shoulder injury less than six minutes into Monday’s game.

The point guard had two points, two assists and four steals in the first few minutes while helping Duke to a 14-6 lead, but Syracuse was able to get back into the game after he was forced to leave.

It was clear what type of loss this was for the Blue Devils:

Jay Williams @RealJayWilliams

The most important player on Duke’s team not being on the court will make life difficult for these Blue Devils. @espn https://t.co/fESU1EOxX2

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanHoops

Sophomore Jordan Goldwire getting meaningful minutes running the point now for Duke. Tre Jones is so important for the Blue Devils, though. Terrific defender, unselfish and no shortage of intangibles. Would expect offense to run more thru RJ Barrett with Jones out.

Bridget Condon @BridgetABC11

Tre Jones out completely changes this team

Not only can Jones run the offense with impressive efficiency, but he is also an elite defender who can shut down opposing players on the perimeter. Without him, the team loses a lot on both ends of the court.

With Reddish also out, it put a lot of pressure on the rest of the players to carry a much bigger load.

Williamson and Barrett did their jobs as usual while Alex O’Connell had a huge night with 16 points, but the lack of alternative options remains a concern.

Duke has gotten most of its offensive production from its four main freshmen, as only eight players average more than 10 minutes per game. This had been working with everyone healthy, but it clearly leads to problems when one or more of the key players is unavailable.

Even foul trouble for Williamson or Barrett could lead to problems against quality opponents.

Losing Jones for an extended stretch would be a killer, especially considering the lack of reliable alternatives coming off the bench.

Syracuse’s Performance a Reminder ACC Has Most Depth in the Country

Injuries or not, Syracuse had an incredible showing against the best team in college basketball.

Tyus Battle scored 20 points in the first half and finished with 32 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Frank Howard came through with a big second half to end up with 16 points and five assists. Paschal Chukwu showed what he can do as well with 10 points and 18 rebounds.

Knocking down 11 three-pointers also helped, including this heave before halftime:

ESPN @espn

FROM THE OTHER 3-POINT LINE!!

(📍 @TysonBrand) https://t.co/K35n0Epvft

Syracuse has had some disappointing performances this year—especially Saturday’s 73-59 loss to Georgia Tech—but it can match up with anyone in the country when it plays to its capability.

Of course, the Orange are at best the eighth-best team in the ACC.

The conference entered Monday with seven teams in the top 26 of the NET rankings, including the No. 1 and No. 2 teams and four in the top 10. The latest AP Poll has six ACC teams in the Top 25, with five in the first 13.

These top teams are contenders to make a deep run in March, while unranked teams like Syracuse, Louisville and Pittsburgh are also capable of pulling off an upset.

This could lead to a wild year in the league.

Performance Against Zone Showcases Zion Williamson’s Versatility

A zone is usually the best way to slow down a strong, athletic player like Williamson. It can keep a player out of the lane and deter him from attacking the basket.

Against the iconic 2-3 zone that Syracuse employs, it would have been understandable to see the freshman struggle. That obviously wasn’t the case Monday.

The forward was incredible against the Orange, finishing with 35 points on 12-of-20 shooting. He made just one of his five three-point attempts but still made several jump shots in the game.

With two starters out, he had to take on a bigger offensive role and more than did his job.

While the scoring was impressive, he was also in control throughout the game. He generally made the right pass and only had two turnovers against a stingy defense.

Jeff Goodman of Stadium discussed Williamson’s smart play:

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanHoops

Zion has been good against this Syracuse zone. Catches and makes quick decisions.

His highlights are always fun, but his basketball awareness makes him an even better player and is a major reason he should succeed in the pros.

Meanwhile, Williamson also flexed his muscle on the defensive end with four blocks.

ESPN @espn

Not in Zion’s house 😤 https://t.co/brQusqL0Gd

His ability to contribute on both ends makes him arguably the best player in college basketball.

What’s Next?

The schedule only gets tougher for Duke as it faces No. 4 Virginia on Saturday in what could be the biggest game of the conference season. Syracuse will return home to face Pittsburgh.

Canada issues China travel alert as tensions escalate

Canada has warned its citizens of the risk of “arbitrary enforcement” of local laws in China after a Canadian man convicted of drug trafficking was suddenly retried and sentenced to death, and Beijing denied another detained Canadian diplomatic immunity.

The Canadian government on Monday updated its travel advisory for China, telling citizens to exercise a high degree of caution while in the country.

The update noted the “risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws” and highlighted the severe penalties for drug offences, including death.

It came hours after a court inin China’s Liaoning province sentenced Robert Lloyd Schellenberg to be executed for drug smuggling following a day-long retrial in which the 36-year-old Canadian had declared his innocence.

“The court completely rejects the accused person’s explanation and defence because it is completely at odds with the facts,” the chief judge said in a courtroom packed with observers, including Canadian embassy officials.

Schellenberg had the right to appeal to Liaoning High Court within 10 days upon receiving the ruling, according to a statement by the Dalian Intermediate People’s Court.

Canada arrests CFO of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei (2:16)

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, said in Ottawa that he was concerned that China had chosen to “arbitrarily” apply the death penalty to a Canadian citizen.

The Canadian government has said it is following the case “very closely” and has provided Schellenberg with consular assistance.

Schellenberg was detained in 2014 and sentenced to 15 years in prison two years later. But last month, an appeal by prosecutors claiming the sentence was too lenient was suddenly given the go-ahead. Monday’s retrial was scheduled with just four days’ notice.

Analysts and rights groups said retrials were rare in China, especially ones calling for a harsher sentence.

“China is going to face lots of questions about why this particular person, of this particular nationality, had to be retried at this particular time,” Sophie Richardson, the Washington-based China director for Human Rights Watch, told Reuters news agency.

Prosecutors said Schellenberg was the principal suspect in a case involving an international syndicate that planned to send some 222kg of methamphetamine to Australia, hidden in plastic pellets which were concealed in rubber tyres.

Two Chinese men have also been tried. One was given a life sentence and the other a suspended death sentence.

But Schellenberg’s lawyer, Zhang Dongshuo, said prosecutors had not produced any new evidence to justify a heavier sentence. He said he planned to lodge an appeal.

China has executed other foreigners for drug-related crimes in the past, including a Japanese national in 2014 and a Filipina in 2013. Beijing considers the number of people executed in China each year to be a state secret. International human rights organisations estimate the figure at around 2,000.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Dalian, where Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was suddenly retried on drugs charges and sentenced to death [Reuters]

The death sentence adds to the tension between the two countries following the arrest in Canada last month of a top executive from telecommunications giant Huawei, infuriating Beijing.

Canada detained Meng Wanzhou, the company’s chief financial officer, on a US extradition request related to alleged Iran sanctions violations. Meng, which denies wrongdoing, has been released on bail and extradition proceedings are due to start next month.

Chinese authorities later detained two Canadian nationals – a former diplomat and a business consultant – on suspicion of endangering national security, in what has been seen by analysts as retaliation for Meng’s arrest.

‘Difficult not to see a link’

Further escalating the diplomatic rift between Ottawa and Beijing, a Chinese spokesperson said earlier on Monday that Michael Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat taken into custody the day after Meng’s arrest, was not eligible for diplomatic immunity as Trudeau has maintained.

A senior Canadian government official said Chinese officials have been questioning Kovrig about his diplomatic work in China, which is a major reason why Trudeau is asserting diplomatic immunity.

Huawei CFO’s arrest rattles investors, markets tumble (2:03)

The official, who was not authorised to comment publicly about the case, spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Kovrig, a Northeast Asia analyst for the International Crisis Group, was on leave of absence from the Canadian government at the time of his arrest last month.

Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, told reporters that Kovrig is no longer a diplomat and entered China on an ordinary passport and business visa.

“According to the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations and international law, he is not entitled to diplomatic immunity,” Hua said at a daily briefing. “I suggest that the relevant Canadian person carefully study the Vienna Convention … before commenting on the cases, or they would only expose themselves to ridicule with such specious remarks.”

A former Canadian ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques, said interrogating Kovrig about his time as a diplomat in China would violate Vienna Convention protections of residual diplomatic immunity that mean a country is not allowed to question someone on the work they did when they were a diplomat.

“It’s difficult not to see a link” between the case and Canada’s arrest of Meng, Saint-Jacques told The Associated Press news agency.

Hua insisted the allegation that China arbitrarily detained Canadian citizens is “totally groundless”.

Canada has embarked on a campaign with allies to win the release of Kovrig and Spavor. The United States, Britain, European Union and Australia have issued statements in support.

Trudeau called US President Donald Trump about the detentions last week and the White House called the arrests “unlawful”.

How Stephen King’s tweets saved book reviews for a local paper

“Don’t do this,” Stephen King tweeted at a local Maine paper.

2017%2f09%2f01%2fdc%2f1bw.3febfBy Shannon Connellan

When Stephen King tweets, things move — like the number of subscribers to a local newspaper.

The best-selling author tweeted his outrage over a Maine paper’s decision to ditch locally-written reviews of books about Maine or by Maine authors.

SEE ALSO: 37 of the most brutal Trump burns tweeted by Stephen King in 2018

“Don’t do this,” King urged people to tell the newspaper, The Portland Press Herald, appealing primarily to his fellow Maine residents.

Both real and fictional towns in the New England state of Maine provide the setting for many of King’s novels, including Salem’s Lot, Pet Sematary, and The Dead Zone, among many others. One of the most famous is King’s dreaded fictional town of Derry, Maine — where It lives.

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram will no longer publish local, freelance-written reviews of books about Maine, set in Maine, or written by Maine authors.

Retweet this if you’re from Maine (or even if you’re not). Tell the paper DON’T DO THIS.

— Stephen King (@StephenKing) January 11, 2019

“It’s all about money and a shrinking income for newspapers,” King went on in a follow-up tweet. “They want to go wire service reviews only, so Maine writers won’t get a boost. Many of them depend on those reviews to buy bread and milk.”

Maine residents and enthusiasts in other states responded to King, voicing their love for the reviews, with one Maine librarian calling them “essential in finding local authors,” as opposed to recommendations from Amazon, for example.

As a Maine librarian, these reviews were essential in finding local authors. Many people want to read Maine authors and would specifically bring the reviews in to request the books from the library. You have to pay to be in Kirkus and there’s more to book life than NYT and Amazon

— Emma J. Gibbon (@Sleepyfable) January 12, 2019

Writers and authors benefit so much from local publications, libraries, and bookstores. More opportunities for outreach, coverage, sales, book signings, readings, Q&A’s, recommendations, and the list goes on. NYT and Amazon are great, but it only goes so far.

— Angela Rynan Durrell (@Rowaenthe) January 12, 2019

I lived in Maine for years. Its strength is local pride, community, and support. I urge The Portland Press Herald & Maine Sunday Telegram to not turn its back on local writers.

— Kate Bixler (@K_Bixler3) January 11, 2019

Sure enough, The Press Herald responded to King’s request. And they played it smart, promising to reinstate the local book reviews immediately, on one condition: King must convince 100 of his 5 million followers to buy digital subscriptions for the paper.

Supplying a suitable promo code, “KING,” for the challenge, the game was afoot.

These are challenging times for newspapers. But here’s an offer: If you can get 100 of your followers to buy digital subscriptions to the @PressHerald, we will reinstate the local book reviews immediately. Use the promo code KING. Deal? https://t.co/5eoqjQ2psV

The Press Herald posted updates on the total number of new subscribers, cheekily asking King for a retweet to “get us over the threshold.”

“The Portland (Maine) Press-Herald has agreed to reinstate local book reviews if 100 people subscribe,” King wrote, acknowledging the slightly promotional nature of the challenge.

“Sales pitch? Blackmail? Either way, 71 people have subscribed so far. Are there 29 more Twitterheads out there who want to ante up? Just asking.”

And either way, it worked. The Press Herald gained over 200 new subscribers in under 48 hours, according to the New York Times

“We’re at our goal. Book reviews will return,” the newspaper announced on Sunday.

You all are the best readers anywhere. Sincerely.

We’re at our goal. Book reviews will return.

King posted his gratitude to his followers for subscribing, tweeting, “You saved the day.”

Thanks to everybody who subscribed to the Press-Herald. You saved the day. There are countries where the arts are considered vital. Too bad this isn’t one of them. The paper thanked you guys. Also thanked me. (And misspelled my name.)

If you’re wondering, the paper didn’t actually misspell King’s name, they were replying in thanks to a nice comment from Twitter user Steven Moore. You can see how that could get confusing.

While a small victory for a local paper may not mean that much to you if you’re not a Maine resident, it’s an important part of a much larger industry problem.

Although integral to their communities, local newspapers have found themselves under pressure in recent years, working hard to stay afloat amidst an ever-expanding digital media landscape — hence the growing need for online subscriptions like those gained by The Press Herald.

With print advertising revenue taking a dive over the last few years, and with staffing and circulation on the decline, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, local newspapers have the odds stacked against them.

“For more than a century, most people in the Western world have taken local journalism for granted,” wrote Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, director of research at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, in his 2015 book on the subject.

“Having a local news medium dedicated to covering you and people around you helps mark the identity of the place where you live as somewhere and helps mark people there as someone,” he wrote.

“Local news helps cultivate consensus, coherence, and stability within a community.”
