Can The 2019 Oscars Be Saved?

Warner Bros.

The Popular Oscar was the first strike. For roughly three weeks this past summer, the internet — or, anyone who cares about the Oscars and/or the future of cinema — collectively lost their minds when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a new Oscars category for “outstanding achievement in popular film.” The backlash was swift, and the idea was reportedly scrapped (for now). But it was a sign of things to come.

The Kevin Hart hosting debacle — strike two — has cast a major shadow over this year’s ceremony. And the frustrating back-and-forth between the Academy, Hart, and, weirdly, Ellen DeGeneres left a bad taste in the mouths of even the most passionate Academy Award viewers. But that hasn’t stopped the Academy from reportedly scrambling to assemble the star-studded cast of the Avengers at the February 24 telecast. In an homage to past ceremonies, or a desperate Hail Mary, the telecast is reportedly calling upon the Avengers to co-host the 91st Academy Awards together, a decision that’s currently falling apart at the seams. This is strike three.

Getty Images

The Academy Awards have been in the middle of an identity crisis for a while, but this year, we’ve finally reached Dante’s Inferno: The 2019 Oscars are Jackson Maine peeing onstage at the Grammys in the middle of a drunken stupor, messily forging ahead aimless and hostless anyway. So it’s time for an intervention.

As ratings continue to decline — last year’s telecast was the least-watched in Oscars history, down 20 percent from the year prior — the Academy increasingly look for ways to remain relevant. On paper, honoring the year’s most popular film sounds like an easy (read: lazy) way to appeal to the masses, but it undermines the sanctity of the ceremony and, even worse, disregards its core audience, the people who treat the annual Academy Awards like their Super Bowl — who carefully analyze the playing field for the thrill of winning their Oscars pool, and who religiously tune in for the yearly pomp and circumstance, waiting for the Hollywood elite to anoint the very best in cinema.

So no matter how many hypothetical nominations the Academy gives Deadpool, 13-year-old boys aren’t going to tune in to watch the Merc with a Mouth accept a statuette in a suit. They’ll watch the speech on YouTube later.

When the Academy expanded the Best Picture race back to 10 nominees in 2009, they did so with a promise to cast a wider net. In the wake of The Dark Knight‘s Best Picture snub, this was a way for the Oscars to move out of their comfort zone and to nominate the kinds of blockbuster genre films that resonate with both critics and audiences. A compelling Best Picture race needs a diverse pool of nominees; to separate the two ruins the fun and delineates one category as more important than the other.

Marvel Studios

Lupita Nyong’o (left) and Letitia Wright (right) in Marvel’s Black Panther

With that in mind, the Popular Oscar just seemed like a shameless way to get movie stars on stage and to guarantee nominations for billion-dollar Marvel franchises. But the Academy doesn’t need to pander to Marvel and its legions of fans; Black Panther deserves to be in the Oscars conversation because it has earned it. Not only was it the highest-grossing domestic film of 2018, but it was also one of the best-reviewed — and it’s run a relatively smooth awards season campaign. And nominations for Black Panther could score major ratings for ABC. According to IndieWire, there’s a direct correlation between Oscar nominee diversity in major categories and viewership. And who wouldn’t want to watch Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, and director Ryan Coogler represent Wakanda at the Oscars?

So where does the show go from here? Coincidentally, the answer may lie in a much-maligned bit from the equally-maligned 1989 Oscars. Thirty years ago, the Academy Awards were hostless (sound familiar?) and looking for a change. So they hired veteran producer Allan Carr to put on a spectacle, and the result was a bizarre, campy opening number starring Snow White and Rob Lowe. But in hindsight, it’s another musical sequence, which brought together 19 of 1989’s rising young stars and future Oscar hopefuls to belt out “I Wanna Be an Oscar Winner,” that actually might be onto something.

If the Oscars truly want to connect with younger audiences, then perhaps it’s time to start recognizing their talented peers: the striking depth of Timothée Chalamet; the winsome enthusiasm of Elsie Fisher; and the onscreen magic of Letitia Wright, who delivered the year’s most luminous performance in Black Panther. Should there be a category for breakthrough performances? The Ringer‘s Sean Fennessey argues that it’s the perfect way to revitalize the archaic nature of the telecast without demeaning its history. And given the fervent fandom around these younger scene-steelers, it also guarantees meme-able content without making it so obvious. The internet’s boyfriend accidentally dropping an f-bomb on live TV? Charming!

With so many exciting achievements in film this year — the success of Black Panther, the Hollywood rebirth of Lady Gaga, Netflix’s first Best Picture frontrunner, and “Shallow”‘s internet dominance, to name a few — the Academy is not lacking in opportunities to celebrate the industry’s younger, more diverse stars right now. Because that’s what the Oscars should be: a celebration — not an obligation — both of its artists and increasingly disparate membership.

And if not, and we have to suffer through Green Book winning Best Picture, well then at least they’ll be a glorious train wreck.

Lizzo Tells Us The Big-Budget Ideas She Didn’t Get To Put In The ‘Juice’ Video

MTV News

During one segment in Lizzo‘s flashy, old television-mining music video for “Juice,” the artist herself appears in a black dress opposite a late-night host, seemingly not having any of it. It’s just one clip in the video’s mirage of warm, fuzzy TV visions — among home-shopping and exercise informercial sequences — that puts Lizzo herself front and center. As she revealed last week on Twitter, this one channeled one specific moment: Madonna’s infamous 1994 appearance on Late Show with David Letterman.

She stopped by MTV News this week to explain why along with the director, Quinn Wilson, she chose that particular moment. The answer’s pretty simple: “There was something really honest about how not with the shits Madonna was, and I feel like wanted to bring that alive.” She contrasted Madonna’s sedate, uncaring (and cool) energy to that of modern talk-show guests, whose rehearsed answers don’t always make for interesting television.

The “Juice” video, however, is fascinating television. As Lizzo herself makes a half-dozen costume changes, she also celebrates the history of the medium in what’s both a nostalgia trip and a contemporary comment. “There’s such a nostalgia with channel-surfing that I had as a kid, like going through Nickelodeon and going to Cartoon Network,” she said. “And then the late-night, like 3 a.m. when you can’t sleep, where it was like Mama’s House was playing, or Seinfeld.

And what we see in the video isn’t even all of what could’ve been.

“I wanted to be Mrs. Rogers from Mrs. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” Lizzo said. “We was gonna do a Good Times scene. Like, we definitely were gonna go for it. We wanted to do a futuristic alien sci-fi show, but, you know, we didn’t have the budget… or the time.”

No matter, “Juice” ended up one of the first truly great music videos (and songs) of 2019. As for what else we can expect from Lizzo this year, she called herself a “song leprechaun” who plans to drop “little songs at the end of little rainbows with a pot of gold for you to enjoy.” Sounds juicy.

Watch the entire MTV News interview with Lizzo in the video above.

Charlotte Hornets rookie forward Miles Bridges is reportedly set to compete in the 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest on Feb. 16 during All-Star Weekend at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported the news Friday.

Bridges, the 12th overall pick in the 2018 draft, hasn’t made a major impact yet for the Hornets. He’s averaged 6.7 points and 3.7 rebounds across 42 appearances off the bench.

The 20-year-old Michigan State product has impressed with his aggressiveness around the rim, however, and produced several highlight-reel dunks in the process.

Charlotte point guard Tony Parker said he’s witnessed progress from the rookie despite not being a focal point of the team’s offensive gameplan at this early stage.

“We don’t call a lot of plays for him, so it’s not easy,” Parker told reporters Thursday. “Tonight we called plays for him, and he was very aggressive and got to the basket and got fouls, so that’s what we want. It depends on the games, but tonight I like what I saw.”

Now he’ll get a chance to showcase his power and athleticism on the All-Star Weekend stage.

The dunk contest isn’t the star-studded spectacle it was in the days of Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins or Vince Carter and Kobe Bryant, but it’s still a spotlight event.

No other competitors have been announced, but reigning champion Donovan Mitchell confirmed Friday he won’t return to defend the title.

Scott Linehan Fired as Cowboys Offensive Coordinator After 4 Seasons

The Dallas Cowboys announced Friday offensive coordinator Scott Linehan agreed to leave his position following discussions with head coach Jason Garrett.

Garrett released a statement, calling the coaching change a “mutual decision.”

“This was not an easy decision because of how highly we regard Scott Linehan as a football coach and as a person,” he said. “He and I had some really positive, substantive and open discussions which took place in the latter part of this week, and we ultimately agreed that it would be in the best interest of all of the parties involved if we were to make a change at this position.”

Linehan joined the Cowboys as a passing game coordinator in 2014 and was promoted to offensive coordinator one year later. He served in the latter role for four seasons.

His departure comes after Garrett said Monday on 105.3 The Fan (via ESPN’s Todd Archer) he expected the 55-year-old Washington native to return for 2019.

“We don’t anticipate any significant changes on our staff,” Garrett added.

However, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones appeared on the same radio station later Monday and said no final decisions had been made about the staff, per Ryan Welch of CowboysWire.

“No, we’re a little over 24 hours into this,” Jones said about making coaching decisions. “… I think it’s a little early to be speculating about players, coaches, anything like that other than I really do think our group overall did a nice job.”

Dallas finished the 2018 regular season ranked 22nd in both total offense (343.8 YPG) and scoring offense (21.2 PPG).

Linehan has 13 years of coordinator experience at the NFL level. Along with the Cowboys, he also served in that capacity with the Minnesota Vikings (2002-04), Miami Dolphins (2005) and Detroit Lions (2009-13). He was head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2006 through 2008.

In those 16 seasons, his offenses ranked inside the top 10 in yardage eight times and the top 10 of scoring on six occasions, per Football Reference.

Linehan’s replacement will inherit a high-upside group of playmakers led by quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver Amari Cooper, plus any offseason additions.

Future Is The True Night King In Snowy ‘Crushed Up’ Performance

Prince Williams/Wireimage

Future‘s seventh proper album, The Wizrd, is out right now, and it’s notable for a few reasons. One, it completes his record-contract requirements with Epic, freeing him up for other pursuits, musical or otherwise. (He told Rolling Stone that his next dream is to open a clothing store: “I wake up, go to my store every day. People come in and shop and I help put they outfits together — and it cost me nothing. They don’t pay me to do it. It’s just a passion of mine.”)

The other reason The Wizrd should be on your radar is that it’s a further refinement of the rapper’s patented icy trap sound. To personify this, he stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform the album cut “Crushed Up” in a literal blizzard. That snow might be added in post, but it looks convincing anyway.

The stage setup here is pretty skeletal: You’ve got Future himself in his trademark sunglasses and a shredding guitar player next to him, as a fake fog creeps around them and digital snow punctuates the mood. He’s like Game of Thrones‘s Night King except in a very expensive jacket. It’s chilly as hell!

The Wizrd boasts guests like Young Thug, Gunna, and Travis Scott, who also pops up on the new release by James Blake, out today. Check out Future’s snowy Colbert performance above, and stream The Wizrd below.

Carmelo Anthony Rumors: Former Rockets SF Has ‘Multiple’ Interested Teams

Mary Altaffer/Associated Press

Carmelo Anthony has not appeared in an NBA game since Nov. 8 after he and the Houston Rockets decided to go their separate ways, but it may not be too long before he is back on the court.

According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Joe Vardon on Friday, Anthony “has multiple options available and is expected to pick one before the Feb. 7 trade deadline.” It’s not clear, though, if those options would potentially be completed via trade or a release and signing.

It’s been a bumpy journey for the 10-time All-Star since he was traded from the New York Knicks to the Oklahoma City Thunder in September 2017. After struggling to adjust to playing alongside Russell Westbrook and Paul George, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks last summer before being waived.

The 34-year-old wound up signing a one-year deal with the Rockets for the veteran’s minimum of $2.4 million. However, his tenure in Houston was short-lived.

Anthony and the Rockets struggled, with the forward asked to come off the bench for the first time in his career. He averaged 13.4 points on 40.5 percent shooting (32.8 percent from three-point range) and 5.4 rebounds per game in 10 appearances.

The Rockets announced on Nov. 16 that Anthony would not be a member of the team moving forward as “the fit we envisioned” never materialized.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst (h/t ESPN’s Rachel Nichols) reported in late November that executives around the league told him that it was possible the former scoring champ’s NBA career was over:

Rachel Nichols @Rachel__Nichols

Team execs have told @WindhorstESPN Carmelo Anthony has likely played his last NBA game, but what about the teams whose primary interest isn’t, um, well, winning right now? Melo is a popular locker room guy, fan fave & if his defense is lacking, maybe a front office won’t mind? https://t.co/PIRNCzB1K1

There has not been much buzz surrounding Anthony in recent weeks either. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported in August that the Miami Heat were among the teams interested in adding Anthony before he signed with Houston.

As Vardon wrote in December, LeBron James is interested in his Banana Boat buddy joining the Los Angeles Lakers. James later acknowledged, though, that roster decisions aren’t up to him, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

Amick and Vardon noted that Anthony’s “conditioning and the overall state of his game” are going to be considered by the Lakers before considering any potential move.

Anthony has gone two months and counting since his last appearance in the NBA. While it may take some time to get him up to speed with a new team, it appears that it may not be long before he is back in action.

Kenya court orders five suspects held over Nairobi attack

Five suspects have appeared in court in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi in connection with Tuesday’s deadly hotel attack.

The siege, which lasted more than 18 hours and claimed by the armed group, al-Shabab, left at least 21 people dead.

The court on Friday granted a request by the prosecution to hold the suspects – four Kenyans and a Canadian national – for 30 days in order for them to conclude their investigations.

“The team of investigators has so far covered considerable ground in the investigations,” Noordin Haji, director of public prosecution, said in a statement on Friday.

“The investigations into this matter are complex and transnational and would therefore require sufficient time and resources to uncover the entire criminal syndicate,” Haji added.

The suspects, identified as Joel Nganga, Oliver Muthee, Osman Ibrahim, Gladys Kaari and Guleid Abdihakim, were arrested on Wednesday in the Nairobi neighbourhoods of Eastleigh and Ruaraka, hours after the hotel siege ended.

George Kinoti, Kenya’s director of criminal investigation, said on Wednesday those arrested were being treated as key suspects because they were in close contact with the attackers.

The al-Qaeda-linked group said it carried out the attack in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Wednesday all the gunmen behind the attack were killed adding that Kenya will hunt down every individual that was involved in the siege.

On Friday morning, businesses in Nairobi’s commercial hub of Eastleigh were closed in solidarity with victims of Tuesday’s attack.

Traders told Al Jazeera the attack was an attempt by the armed group to hurt the city’s business environment.

“We closed our businesses in solidarity with those affected by the attack. We are saddened by the situation in Nairobi,” Abdi Mohamed Aden, a shopowner, told Al Jazeera. “They [the attackers] are trying to incite people against each other but that will not happen.”

Mohamed Ali Abdi, a trader in the eastern suburb, said Tuesday’s attack left people shaken but determined.

“We closed down our shops because we are mourning the death of our brothers, our fellow Kenyans who lost their lives. We want to tell those who want to destroy Kenya we will destroy you,” he said.

Of the victims of Tuesday’s siege, 16 were Kenyan, one was British, one was from the United States and three were of African descent but their nationalities were not yet identified, according to police.

The attack at DusitD2 was the first in Nairobi since the Westgate mall attack in 2013, which left more than 60 dead.

Is Kenya containing the threat from al-Shabab?

Matt Miller’s Scouting Notebook: Best Landing Spots for Top QBs in NFL Draft

Missouri quarterback Drew Lock (3) throws during warmups before an NCAA college football game against Tennessee Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, in Knoxville, Tenn. (AP Photo/Wade Payne)

Wade Payne/Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — All week during practices and late-night drinks at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, scouts and evaluators are talking about the quarterbacks.

“Do you really think Kyler Murray goes in the first round?”

“Where are you hearing the Broncos will go?”

There are a lot of different scenarios being tossed around, but as the offseason heats up, it’s clear that NFL evaluators and decision-makers are wondering how the quarterback carousel will affect the 2019 draft class. Meanwhile, teams already set at the position are looking at the possibility of a run on quarterbacks pushing talented players like Ohio State edge-rusher Nick Bosa or Kentucky edge-rusher Josh Allen down the board.

So, where will the quarterbacks go?

It all starts on March 13 with the opening of the 2019 league year. Like one player personnel veteran told me this week, “It’s pointless to predict right now because Nick Foles could go to Jacksonville or Joe Flacco could go to the Giants and throw it all off.”

He’s right. Everyone in the NFL has a plan coming together right now (or they should) about how the offseason will go. You make a plan for where you’ll spend in free agency and identify targets. From there, you look at your team’s remaining needs and match those with value in the draft. But if your team needs a quarterback, you can’t go far in your plan without first considering where Flacco and Foles will land.

Thus, the domino effect of the quarterback position can’t start yet. But that stops no one from hypothesizing about where the draft’s top quarterbacks will land.

“I bet you three [QBs] go in the top 10,” said the veteran personnel man.

That number might be low.

Another high-level scout recently told me that between current needs in the top 15 and potential trades up the board, he expects four quarterbacks to be drafted in the top 10.

It’s easy to piece together possibilities, especially with some evaluators believing the Cardinals will trade Josh Rosen (which adds another domino) to get new head coach Kliff Kingsbury his guy in Kyler Murray.

If Arizona does move Rosen, Murray (Cardinals), Dwayne Haskins (Giants), Daniel Jones (Jaguars) and Drew Lock (Broncos) could all go in the top 10. It’s even easy to plot it out without factoring in trades.

—Could Nick Foles land in Jacksonville? It’s a theory many have floated for several obvious reasons. The Philadelphia Eagles will not want to trade him within the NFC East, and they might try to keep him out of the NFC altogether. The Jaguars also hired Foles’ former quarterbacks coach, John DeFilippo, as offensive coordinator. If the asking price is a second-round pick, as many have theorized at NFLPA practices, the Jaguars should jump at the opportunity.

Butch Dill/Associated Press

—Kentucky pass-rusher Josh Allen, the No. 3 overall player on my big board, dropped out from the Senior Bowl this week. Allen is not injured, but he opted to pull out to preserve his health and prepare for the NFL Scouting Combine. It’s a common move for top players not to attend the Senior Bowl, but in this case, Allen could be hurting himself. The San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders are the staffs working the event, and both have a need for a pass-rusher. Selecting at No. 2 and No. 4 overall, respectively, a week of contact with Allen could have locked him into either spot.

—The Denver Broncos hired former San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello as their new offensive coordinator, and folks around the league are already taking notice. One former general manager texted me to say that Scangarello will be a head coach in the near future.

—The 2019 tight end class is special, with three legitimate first-round talents. That’s comparable to 2017, when O.J. Howard, Evan Engram and David Njoku were all seen as top-32 players. This year, Iowa’s Noah Fant and T.J. Hockenson and Alabama’s Irv Smith Jr. are all top-tier candidates at tight end. Fant is the most athletic and is somewhat reminiscent of Engram. Hockenson is the best blocker, has excellent hands and won the Mackey Award for college football’s best tight end. Smith is arguably the most complete one of the bunch, and he looks like a plug-and-play starter.

It’s time to update the big board after the January 14 deadline for underclassmen to declare. Here’s my most recent top 32:

1. Nick Bosa, EDGE, Ohio State

2. Quinnen Williams, DL, Alabama

3. Josh Allen, EDGE, Kentucky

4. Ed Oliver, DL, Houston

5. Rashan Gary, DL, Michigan

6. Devin White, LB, LSU

7. Greedy Williams, CB, LSU

8. Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama

9. Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida State

10. Clelin Ferrell, EDGE, Clemson

11. Josh Jacobs, RB, Alabama

12. Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State

13. Devin Bush, LB, Michigan

14. Jeffery Simmons, DL, Miss. State

15. Trayvon Mullen, CB, Clemson

16. Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama

17. Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia

18. Byron Murphy, CB, Washington

19. Cody Ford, OL, Oklahoma

20. Daniel Jones, QB, Duke

21. Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State

22. Yodny Cajuste, OT, West Virginia

23. Jachai Polite, EDGE, Florida

24. Jaylon Ferguson, EDGE, Louisiana Tech

25. Noah Fant, TE, Iowa

26. T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

27. Irv Smith Jr., TE, Alabama

28. Greg Little, OT, Ole Miss

29. Oshane Ximines, EDGE, Old Dominion

30. Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma

31. N’Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State

32. Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma

6. Stock Up

Oklahoma offensive lineman Cody Ford is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the best of the group in this draft. Most teams see Ford, a 6’4″, 337-pound rock at right tackle, shifting inside to offensive guard, where he has the power to excel in the run game.

Don’t be surprised if Ford is a top-15 selection when April rolls around. This isn’t a particularly strong offensive line class, and his size, power and NFL readiness are enticing.

5. Stock Down

The Clemson Tigers upset Alabama to earn a national title, but defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was absent from the team’s playoff victories because of a suspension for a failed drug test. NFL scouts say that episode, as well as his nose tackle position becoming extinct in the NFL, will push him down boards.

A former top prep player, Lawrence has plenty of name recognition among football fans, but scouts are not high on his abilities.

4. Sleeper of the Week

One of the toughest, most physical players in the 2019 draft class is Temple’s Rock Ya-Sin. The senior cornerback is excellent playing at the line of scrimmage, and his reach, awareness and instincts all show up on tape. In a cornerback class dominated by juniors, Ya-Sin has a chance to leave next week’s Senior Bowl as the group’s top-ranked senior.

3. The top 24 picks of the first round are set. Here’s the current order based on win-loss percentage and strength of schedule:

1. Arizona Cardinals

2. San Francisco 49ers

3. New York Jets

4. Oakland Raiders

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

6. New York Giants

7. Jacksonville Jaguars

8. Detroit Lions

9. Buffalo Bills

10. Denver Broncos

11. Cincinnati Bengals

12. Green Bay Packers

13. Miami Dolphins

14. Atlanta Falcons

15. Washington Redskins

16. Carolina Panthers

17. Cleveland Browns
