Trinidad mother reunited with sons taken by ISIL father to Syria

London, United Kingdom – A mother from Trinidad and Tobago has spoken of her relief after being reunited this week with her two sons who were abducted by their father and taken to ISIL-held territory in Syria four years ago.

Felicia Perkins-Ferreira braved sub-zero temperatures as part of a nearly 10,000km odyssey that began in the balmy Caribbean islands and ended in the icy hinterlands of northern Syria, where Ayyub, seven, and Mahmud 11, were being held by Kurdish forces.

The Trinidad and Tobago government had at first appeared reluctant to assist the boys but as the case drew international attention, including support from a leading human rights lawyer and a rock star, it quickly issued passports to facilitate the family’s travel.

“I was really shocked,” Perkins-Ferreira told Al Jazeera on Wednesday, after her trip. “I started crying and i just really wanted them to be out from there immediately.”

Perkins-Ferreira, who is now in London receiving support by the UK-based campaign group Reprieve, added that her youngest son, Ayyub, who was taken to Syria just after his third birthday handed her a gift of a thousand Syrian pounds when they met and immediately told her: “Mummy, I’m ready to go home.”

Clive Stafford-Smith, the lawyer of Perkins-Ferreira and founder of Reprieve, heaped praise on the Trinidad and Tobago government, which he expects will permit the family to return home later this week.

Meanwhile, a prominent imam who has helped Trinidadian nationals to leave Syria called on authorities to help less high-profile nationals who are still trapped in the war-torn country.

‘Humane example’

In 2014, the boys were brought to live in the so-called caliphate by their father, a fighter of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group who is now believed dead.

As the US-led coalition closed in on the group, the children were sent to Turkey, accompanied by their Belgian stepmother who eventually abandoned them on the side of a street where they were found by Kurdish-Arab Syrian Democratic Forces.

They were then brought to Camp Roj, living among the families of imprisoned and dead ISIL fighters. Conditions were so bad they were forced to sleep in concrete toilets.

The rescue marks an important step in a four-year campaign to return the children, spearheaded by Perkins-Ferreira’sTrinidad-based mother, Gail Abdulsamad, who made initial contact with the International Red Cross.

PEOPLE AND POWER: Caribbean to Caliphate (24:59)

Later, Stafford-Smith, whose clients have included a number of Guantanamo Bay detainees, was brought into the fold, with Roger Waters, co-founder of iconic British rock band Pink Floyd, lending his jet to rescue the boys.

Stafford-Smith hailed the Trinidad and Tobago government for setting a “humane example” and decried the “populism” shown by other countries who have abandoned their nationals in Syria.

Of more than 2,000 foreign nationals currently held in Northern Syria, swept up as local forces took over ISIL-held territory, 1,248 are children and another 584 are women.

“Trinidad and Tobago is not a large country yet they have set an active, sensible and humane example. Other governments whose nationals are in a similar situation ought to be doing the same, yet many refuse basic assistance necessary to secure the repatriation of innocent children to their homelands,” Stafford-Smith told Al Jazeera.

Even so, the government appeared slow to act, despite becoming aware of the boys’ case since at least August, leading to speculation they were unwilling to repatriate them.

For the most part, Trinidad and Tobago’s position on returnees has been ambiguous, as it tries to balance national security concerns with obligations towards its nationals while at the same time displaying a brave face among a security-conscious international community.

The government refused to answer the questions put to them about the case, but said in a statement that upon their return it “assesses the best environments for minors who may have experienced the trauma, and ill-effects of being in around, warzones and battlefronts”.

Cases of Trinidadians heading to ISIL-held areas

The fate of the other estimated 130 Trinidad and Tobago nationals who travelled to the so-called ISIL caliphate has been mixed, but rarely as positive. With a population of just 1.4 million, the country has one of the largest per-capita populations thought to have travelled to territories held by ISIL.

Shane Crawford, who became the country’s most notorious foreign fighter after calling for the slaying of Christians in the Trinidadian streets, was killed by a US drone in 2017.

In April, a Trinidadian woman was among a group of six women sentenced to death in Iraq for links to ISIL.

Last year, the Middle East Eye spoke to a woman who returned to Trinidad after escaping with her children on foot from an ISIL camp in Syria to Turkey. One male ISIL member is also known to have returned.

Many returnees have sought the help of Hasan Anyabwile, a UK-based Trinidadian imam who uses messaging apps – the same channels ISIL uses to spread its message – to convince people to leave and facilitates their travel back home by liaising with authorities and families.

Anyabwile, who has supported Perkins-Ferreira’s family, said the publicity garnered by the case meant that it had become too big for the authorities in Trinidad and Tobago to ignore.

“The government have now jumped onto the situation because of international exposure,” he said, adding: “A woman should not have to rally support from the international community just to get her children back.

“They have to be more sympathetic to the various dynamics people face.”

Anyabwile is supporting efforts by two Trinidadian women who are living under United Nations supervision in Syria to returned home.

He claimed that government officials have “turned a deaf ear” to a letter written by one requesting help.

NYC might actually eventually allow e-scooters

Riding in NYC could eventually be a thing.

New York City has been a holdout in the electric scooter craze, but after a city council hearing Wednesday, that could finally change.

The city’s Committee on Transportation introduced four bills concerning e-scooters and electric bicycles. Companies like Bird and Lime that rent out the motorized scooters haven’t been allowed to operate in the city’s five boroughs, despite a growing international presence.

The four bills include a pilot program for shared e-scooters and legalizing e-scooters that can only go  up to 15 mph. A similar bill would allow for the use of e-bikes with a max speed of 20 mph, while another creates a conversion program for throttle e-bikes to become pedal-assist e-bicycles.

SEE ALSO: NYC lifts ban on electric bikes, but hoverboards still illegal

Previously, a 2004 New York state law banned any motorized scooters. Last year, NYC mayor Bill de Blasio lightened up the rules with an exception for electric-assist bicycles that still require pedaling to move. This was seen as an overdue win for the courier and delivery-worker community that relies on the bicycle’s extra boost. The mayor isn’t the biggest fan of motorized vehicles zooming around the city.

Now the fight moves onto e-scooters.

Council member Ydanis Rodriguez has been vocal about legalizing electric transit options, along with council members Rafael Espinal and Fernando Cabrera. The three members held a rally before the Wednesday meeting, where the four bills were introduced.

HAPPENING NOW: Rally @ City Hall Park. The time is now to move our City into the future of transit by legalizing e-bikes & e-scooters and stop ticketing delivery workers utilizing the technology. pic.twitter.com/IeVqwUwIFX

— Ydanis Rodriguez (@ydanis) January 23, 2019

The meeting went on for more than five hours weighing what seemed like every aspect of bringing in new motorized vehicles from charging infrastructure, to protected bike lanes, to the impact on congestion and the environment.

A spokesperson for council member Rodriguez said this is the first meaningful step to allow the battery-powered devices on city streets.

Now that the council and community members were able to discuss the bills, the council will take more public comment and input from agencies and others involved in e-scooter legalization. It looks somewhat optimistic that e-scooters could be allowed in NYC — eventually, and likely with many caveats.

E-scooter company Lime is obviously eager to enter the new market and has a Manhattan event with its next generation e-scooter planned for later this week, noting it as a chance for “New Yorkers to experience the possibilities that Lime offers to everyone.” The Facebook invite says city leaders will attend.

Back in November, the package of e-vehicle bills were technically first introduced, but were held up until the state gave the go-ahead. Now that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has given the OK for cities to figure out for themselves what to do about e-scooters, NYC is doing just that. But until the state budget is passed later this year, NYC might have to wait before the electric vehicles start zooming around.

Want to work out like Thor? Marvel star Chris Hemsworth is releasing his own fitness app.

Dubbed Centr, the app will be available for iPhone and Apple Watch starting Feb. 4, and features workouts, meal plans, and mindfulness exercises all helmed by the Australian actor.

SEE ALSO: Delightful ‘MIB International’ trailer reunites Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson

“I believe we all have untapped potential,” reads Hemsworth’s website statement. “And we all need support to achieve our goals. Centr puts the world’s best in the palm of your hand, to help you develop a healthier body, stronger mind, and a happier life.”

The app hinges around a central feed, in which you can scroll through your weekly planner, see newly-added workout or meditation videos and recipes, and swipe to swap out activities you’re not into — yeah, high-intensity interval training, you’re outta here.

The app’s workout section features 20 or 40 minute sessions for home or the gym, with new videos released weekly, including boxing, HIIT, yoga, strength training and others.

Like most fitness apps, you’ll be able to set a goal and log your progress, and you can set your chosen intensity level. Centr can even use HealthKit with Apple Watch to log your workouts and record your heart rate.

Paired with this is the mindfulness section, which not every fitness app prioritizes, so kudos. The app promises guided meditations, confidence-building exercises, “sleep visualizations,” and tips for dealing with stress.

Then, there’s the meal plan section, which can be altered to dietary requirements including gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian, and comes with automated shopping lists.

Hemsworth developed the app with his wife, actress Elsa Pataky, along with a host of Hollywood trainers, a Hollywood stuntman, a Navy SEAL trainer, yoga and pilates instructors, a psychotherapist, meditation expert, a bunch of professional chefs, and more.

The app ain’t cheap, with pre-ordered subscriptions sitting at $15.99 a month (that’s with 20 percent discount for “founding members”), but that’s much cheaper than most gym memberships.

If nothing else, the trailer for Centr is a work of art, set in Australia’s Byron Bay and starring many offensively beautiful people, including Hemsworth, who whacks a colossal tyre with a Thor-like hammer and does yoga on an empty beach among other activities.

Until the app launches on February 4, if you’re in need of some celebrity encouragement to get up and seize that day, I can highly recommend Dwayne Johnson’s highly motivational alarm app, The Rock Clock. Maybe pair the two, depending on how much motivation you need (I need it all).

What Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into politics means for India’s elections

The biggest democracy in the world is due to elect its leader for the next five years in fewer than 100 days -and the race has just become more interesting.

On Wednesday, the main Indian opposition Congress party announced that Priyanka Gandhi – the younger sister of party leader Rahul Gandhi and one of the youngest scions of the country’s most fabled political family – had officially entered politics.

The popular 47-year-old accepted a senior position and will be in charge of the party’s affairs in the key state of Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 MPs to the 545-strong lower house of parliament and has produced nine Indian prime ministers.

The news had Congress staff across India dancing and burning crackers.

‘Crowd-puller’

Priyanka Gandhi’s appointment is expected to significantly help her brother in mounting a credible challenge to the dominance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the last elections in 2014, Congress saw its seat count in the lower house of parliament fall to just 44, while its vote share in Uttar Pradesh dropped to about eight percent.

Analysts have said the party needed new ideas and new faces to revive their fortunes.

“This was in the offing,” Said Naqvi, a journalist and political analyst, told Al Jazeera.

“She [Priyanka Gandhi] is a definite a crowd-puller and this decision will certainly weigh on the ruling BJP’s gameplay now.”

Political dynasty

Priyanka Gandhi’s family has long dominated Indian politics.

Her great grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru, was the first prime minister of independent India; her grandmother, Indira, and father, Rajiv, were also prime ministers, while her mother, Sonia, has been a Congress party president.

Priyanka Gandhi herself is no stranger to politics but had confined herself to Amethi and Rae Bareily, constituencies which are represented by her brother and mother respectively.

She is married to businessman Robert Vadra, who has faced graft accusation by the BJP in his business dealings. The Congress party has dismissed the allegations as “politically-motivated”.

In recent months, Congress has been on a upward curve, wresting power from the BJP in December’s regional elections in the key states of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

The results dealt Modi his biggest defeat since taking office in 2014, boosting the opposition ahead of the national polls, when more than 900 million eligible voters are expected to pick the country’s members of parliament who, in turn, will elect the prime minister.

‘Game changer’

So far, most opinion polls have the BJP leading the race, with Modi’s popularity remaining high.

The outcome, however, is not seen as a foregone conclusion.

This month, the leaders of the regional Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) announced the creation of a potentially formidable coalition aiming to challenge Modi.

Meanwhile, in a show of strength, Mamata Banerjeee, chief minister of the eastern state of West Bengal, a few days ago organised a massive rally attended by most of the parties opposing the BJP.

And now, Priyanka Gandhi’s official foray into the state’s politics is expected to add more pressure on Modi and his ruling party.

“Priyanka’s entry is a game changer,” Jai Prakash, a farmer from Amethi, told Al Jazeera.

“People see a reflection of Indira Gandhi in her. She is more charismatic than Rahul,” he added.

“She is Congress’s trump card.”

Uber Rewards rolled out to more cities and we aren’t that impressed

It's a gold party.
It’s a gold party.

Image: uber screengrab / mashable

2016%252f10%252f18%252f6f%252f2016101865slbw.6b8ca.6b5d9.jpg%252f90x90By Sasha Lekach

On my way home from the gym Tuesday evening, I was pleasantly surprised to see an invite to join Uber Rewards on the ride-hailing app.

I’m in San Francisco and the loyalty program hadn’t made it there yet — or so I thought. As of this week, the program that offers perks and rewards based on the number of Uber rides taken expanded with a long list of new areas.

SEE ALSO: Lyft’s rewards program will offer perks for choosing Lyft over Uber

Uber Rewards was first announced in November in nine areas. Now it’s also in:

  • Washington, D.C.

  • Philadelphia

  • Atlanta

  • San Diego

  • New York City

  • Miami

  • New Jersey

  • Denver

  • Tampa Bay

  • Boston

  • Dallas

  • Orange County

  • Houston

  • New Orleans

  • Kansas City

  • Indianapolis

  • Los Angeles

  • San Francisco

  • Fort Collins

  • Rockies

  • Pittsburgh

  • Lehigh Valley

  • York-Gettysburg

  • Erie

  • Western Massachusetts

Based on my past six months of ride-hailing, I qualified for gold status. I felt something like a sense of pride that I wasn’t relegated to lowly blue, the starter status. Then I realized it meant I’d simply spent enough money on Uber to qualify. Funny how they get you.

Once people in ride-hailing heavy cities like Los Angeles, New York, Denver, Boston, and San Francisco realized they were part of a loyalty club that could offer them perks like no cancellation fees, people started to look a bit closer at what they were a part of. It also felt like a game to see if you’d reached diamond status (the highest level — it goes blue, gold, platinum, then the coveted diamond).

After a quick look at the perks, it became apparent that, yes, you do receive $5 credit for every 500 points but only after spending a lot of money on the car service. You receive one point for every dollar spent on Uber Pool rides and Uber Eats orders. You get two points for ordering an UberX, UberXL, Select, or WAV ride, and three points for ordering Black and Black SUV rides.

Several noted that the rewards were fairly stingy in an attempt to cultivate loyalty away from competitor app, Lyft. Lyft’s loyalty program  — also announced in November — has yet to make its way to riders yet.

Some detractors had thoughts:

Appreciate @Uber new rewards program, but seems stingy. I’m not at all motivated towards more loyalty. Margins already too low? Not enough market research? What do you think @TheRideshareGuy?

— Murph (@GregMurphy_SD) January 23, 2019

Uber’s new loyalty program is kind of a joke. You have to spend $250 to get $5 in uber cash.

Or in subway sandwich terms, buy 25 sandwiches and get one free!! https://t.co/lFVha0Joka

— Harry Campbell (@TheRideshareGuy) January 23, 2019

But for others, the rewards are a welcome bonus for doing nothing but ordering a car or a meal — many, many times.

Now we’ll see if the new points system changes things for riders. Some speculate that ride-hailing will become more like airline loyalty programs, favoring higher-frequency flyers.

I have a theory that the quality of service for the average customer is going to suffer as a result of Uber’s rewards program. Make service worse for the those without status, making them chase higher status for better service. Straight from the airline industry playbook.

— harold nyikal (@wickedH) January 23, 2019

Lololol no use fighting you on that front since you are the food delivery marketplace expert, solving for different use cases though imo and not sure rewards incentives strong enough to make customers choose Uber v Lyft, and Ubereats v Caviar, Grub, etc

— Minion Capital (@MinionCapital) January 23, 2019

For anyone with a Lyft all-access pass, the choice is easy. But for everyone else, the eternal question of Uber or Lyft rages on.

Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo, who has enjoyed a career resurgence after the Oklahoma City Thunder traded him and Domantas Sabonis for superstar forward Paul George in 2017, suffered a gruesome knee injury on Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors.

Fox Sports Indiana shared footage of the play:

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

Prayers up for Dipo, who had to be stretchered off the floor after an apparent leg injury 🙏 https://t.co/c9VJqyrkgj

In 2017-18, the ex-Indiana Hoosier star averaged 23.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and a league-leading 2.4 steals per game. Not only did he easily win the Most Improved Player award, but the six-year veteran was also named to the All-Defensive first team and the All-NBA third team.

Oladipo led the Pacers to a surprising playoff appearance as Indiana earned the Eastern Conference’s fifth seed with a 48-34 record. The Pacers nearly took down LeBron James and the eventual Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round but lost in seven games despite Oladipo’s 22.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.4 steals per contest.

This season started out with much promise as the 6’4″ guard averaged 22.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.7 steals in the Pacers’ first 15 games, which resulted in a 9-6 record.

However, Oladipo then missed 11 full games with a sore right knee. In his absence, the Pacers did an excellent job staying afloat with a 7-4 mark.

Oladipo returned to the court against the Milwaukee Bucks and hadn’t shown any ill effects from the knee injury since. Entering Wednesday, the 26-year-old had posted 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.7 steals for the 31-15 Pacers.

Indiana has done well without Oladipo on the floor, with Sabonis emerging as a dominant force thanks to 15.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.

However, the Pacers don’t have a consistent primary scorer sans Oladipo, and that could end up being a problem.

Bojan Bogdanovic has raised his scoring average from 14.3 points per game to 16.0 points on 49.2 percent shooting, but he’s best used as a complementary offensive threat. Oladipo is the only Pacer capable of being the team’s top offensive weapon on a game-by-game basis.

Regardless of the Pacers’ performance sans Oladipo on the court, the hope is that the exciting young guard returns to the court 100 percent. His improvementand the Pacers’ ability to defy expectations after the George tradehave been two of the NBA’s better stories recently.

Immigration hawks ‘frustrated’ over Trump’s border wall obsession

Donald Trump holds up a picture of a wall during a meeting

White House

Even conservative activists who have made a career of restricting immigration say Trump has gotten carried away by his famous 2016 campaign promise.

Democrats aren’t the only ones who wish President Donald Trump weren’t obsessed with building a border wall.

Even hard-line conservative immigration activists are frustrated with Trump’s relentless focus on a border wall — and are pushing him to embrace what they call more effective enforcement policies as part of any deal with Congress.

Story Continued Below

They are working with a half-dozen Republican members of Congress to write additional proposals they hope the White House will support. The suggestions include reducing the number of people sponsored for residency by family members, eliminating the visa lottery system and mandating nationwide E-Verify, an online system that allows businesses to cross-check work authorizations.

“We’re obviously a little frustrated because so much focus has been on barriers, walls and fences,” said Chris Chmielenski, director of content and activism at NumbersUSA, which supports curbing legal and illegal immigration.

When NumbersUSA outlined 10 steps to bolster immigration enforcement on its website, a border wall didn’t even make the list. The group, which has participated in discussions at the White House this week, sent an email blast to supporters urging them to contact the White House to include other measures.

Democrats who are dug in against funding a wall have said they might agree to some toughened enforcement measures that don’t involve concrete or steel structures, although they generally oppose E-Verify and reducing legal immigration.

Trump has offered the Democrat-controlled House a deal to temporarily protect hundreds of thousands of immigrants who entered the country as children in exchange for $5.7 billion for a border wall as a way to break an impasse with lawmakers that has kept the federal government shuttered for 33 days. But immigration groups that have stood with him in the past complain that he is giving too much for too little — a sign that his determination to fulfill an oft-repeated campaign pledge risks costing him even some hard-core supporters.

RJ Hauman, government relations director at Federation for American Immigration Reform, which also wants more enforcement, called Trump’s “build the wall” approach simplistic.

“President Trump was elected to put forth a multi-pronged approach to immigration, not just build a couple hundred miles of border barriers,” he said. “It’s disappointing to see what he’s doing now.”

On Wednesday, Trump hosted a call with 500 state, local and community leaders and later met at the White House with conservative leaders, including those from The Heritage Foundation, Americans for Prosperity and Tea Party Patriots, to sell his proposal.

“The president really has no intention of caving on this. That wasn’t spin, that was after the reporters and everything left,” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies and an attendee at the White House meeting. He added that Trump offered no hint of how he might proceed if, as expected, scheduled votes in Congress on Thursday aiming to reopen the government should fail.

But there are few signs that his latest overture to immigration hard-liners could quell their anger about his Saturday proposal to grant protections from deportation to immigrants who came to the country illegally, according to people familiar with the meetings.

Hauman, for one, said he is frustrated that Trump’s immigration proposals have gotten “increasingly weak” and that he didn’t rescind an Obama-era program that protected so-called Dreamers immediately, as he promised on the campaign trail.

At the same time, Trump continues to fixate on his vision of a barrier along the southern U.S. border.

“We have to have a wall,” Trump said at the meeting Wednesday. “We have to have a barricade of some kind, a steel barricade, it’s already designed. We’re building a lot of wall as we speak, a tremendous amount, and we’re renovating a lot of the other wall.”

Trump is holding a series of meetings with immigration hard-liners, including one on Tuesday that was not listed on his public schedule, and another one Thursday, according to people familiar with the meetings.

“Ultimately a border wall is less important than interior enforcement, including E-Verify,” said Reihan Salam, executive editor of National Review and author of “Melting Pot or Civil War? A Son of Immigrants Makes the Case Against Open Borders.” “Clandestine border-crossers are certainly a part of the unauthorized border problem, but they’re a small and shrinking part.”

The activists want the White House to add other policies to the offer that Trump made on Saturday. Sens. Tom Cotton and John Boozman, both Republicans from Arkansas, have introduced legislation to mandate an E-Verify system. Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla.) drafted a bill that would end the visa lottery. And Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) wrote a proposal to end extended-family preference category for legal immigration.

Other lawmakers are expected to introduce legislation to end the visa lottery system, enact a biometric exit and entry system, and make changes that some say will make it easier to end the catch-and-release system, according to several people knowledgeable of the proposals.

A wall on the Mexican border was a centerpiece of Trump’s 2016 campaign, in which he promised to crack down on illegal Mexican immigration. He also pledged to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows temporary, renewable work permits for so-called Dreamers who were brought into the U.S. illegally as children. Trump backed away from that pledge last year when his administration announced that it would instead wind down the program over six months and allow certain recipients to apply for a two-year renewal. A court challenge has since kept the program alive.

Steve Cortes, a Trump ally who served on his Hispanic Advisory Council during the 2016 campaign and is serving on his 2020 reelection committee, said he understands the substantive complaints over Trump’s wall obsession, but called it vital to his reelection campaign.

“The wall is so important, both in reality and symbolically, that a streamlined compromise makes sense for now,” he said. “There’s plenty of time to address the larger issues that need reform, such as our often-abused asylum allowances and chain migration.

“I believe the wall all but assures reelection in 2020, and we can’t lose sight of that political necessity,” he added.

The same groups have opposed Trump’s immigration plans before: Last year, they launched TV ads and blasted him on social media for his proposal to offer 1.8 million immigrants a chance at citizenship and allow millions of immigrants to legally reside in the country through family reunification programs.

Trump’s latest offer would provide a three-year extension of protections for DACA recipients and those from El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua who fled their countries and have Temporary Protected Status. It would also limit the number of minors who could be granted asylum and pay for 2,750 border agents and law enforcement officials and 75 new immigration judges.

Democrats, too, criticized Trump’s offer and insisted he sign a funding bill to reopen the federal government before they negotiate. The longest shutdown in U.S. government history has left 800,000 federal workers furloughed or forced to work without pay.

“We’ve got to keep this narrow,” said Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, an immigrant advocacy group. Noorani called for “smart border security that includes a combination of technology, infrastructure and human resources, and then pair that with permanent protections for DACA recipients and TPS recipients,”

Conservatives insist they aren’t looking for a comprehensive immigration plan — which Congress has failed to pass multiple times, including last year — but rather a deal that provides more enforcement to combat illegal immigration and reduces the number of legal immigrants allowed into the U.S.

Vice President Mike Pence and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner said repeatedly over the weekend that the president’s proposal was intended not only to end the shutdown, but also to be a jumping-off point an for immigration overhaul.

“In this speech, there were a lot of overtures toward broader immigration reform,” Kushner told reporters on Saturday. “The president’s shown on a wide ranges of issues that he’s been able to bring people together and find solutions. I think he would like to see immigration fixed.”

The White House has already started holding working meetings with various groups in the hopes it can strike a larger deal. But Congress failed to pass a rewrite of the nation’s immigration laws last year when both chambers were controlled by Republicans making it extremely unlikely a divided Congress would grant Trump a victory as he launches his reelection campaign.

Bohemian Rhapsody Director Bryan Singer Faces New Sexual Assault Allegations

WireImage

On the heels of Bohemian Rhapsody’s two major Golden Globe wins — including Best Motion Picture Drama — and five Oscar nominations — including Best Picture — Bryan Singer, the film’s maligned director, faces fresh allegations of sexual misconduct with minors.

The Atlantic’s thoroughly reported piece contains specific details from over 50 sources, including four men who had never publicly spoken about their life-altering encounters. And much like the repetitive nature of the accusations against Harvey Weinstein, their stories tell the same chilling tale of Singer, a powerful, in-demand man in the film industry and host of infamous Hollywood pool parties, where he would prey on the vulnerability of teenage boys — promising them acting gigs, giving them access to his successes, fueling them with drugs and alcohol, and using their bodies for his own pleasure or that of his friends.

In a statement provided to numerous outlets, Singer denied the accusations and called the report a “homophobic smear piece.”

“The last time I posted about this subject, Esquire magazine was preparing to publish an article written by a homophobic journalist who has a bizarre obsession with me dating back to 1997. After careful fact-checking and, in consideration of the lack of credible sources, Esquire chose not to publish this piece of vendetta journalism. That didn’t stop this writer from selling it to The Atlantic. It’s sad that The Atlantic would stoop to this low standard of journalistic integrity. Again, I am forced to reiterate that this story rehashes claims from bogus lawsuits filed by a disreputable cast of individuals willing to lie for money or attention. And it is no surprise that, with Bohemian Rhapsody being an award-winning hit, this homophobic smear piece has been conveniently timed to take advantage of its success.”

It’s worth noting that according to the writers of The Atlantic piece, that statement is misleading. In a statement provided via The Atlantic’s communications team, Maximillian Potter and Alex French note that Esquire’s fact-checking and legal team approved of the sources and reporting; it was executives on the top who killed the piece for unknown reasons. The piece was also vetted by The Atlantic’s team before publication.

Regardless, the harrowing report is nothing new for industry insiders. Singer first faced assault allegations in April 2014, when Michael Egan sued the director, alleging rape. The lawsuit was dropped months later — but not before BuzzFeed published a lengthy report detailing the director’s party-hard lifestyle — and Singer moved forward, career virtually unscathed in the years before the #MeToo movement reached the mainstream.

But Singer’s reputation still preceded him, particularly within Hollywood’s gay community. Soon after the latest report’s publication, Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander took to Twitter to denounce the director. “Bryan singer and his LA pool parties are ACTUAL Hollywood nightmares that many people have spoken out about for a long time,” he wrote. “He’s a deranged, abusive and sadistic man, so are his accomplices. It is so incredibly difficult for survivors to come forward, Love and respect to them x.”

Many others either remained unaware of or turned a blind eye to the past allegations and gossip lingering in Singer’s orbit — including, apparently, Bohemian Rhapsody’s now-decorated star, Rami Malek.

In an interview following news of his Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, Malek told the Los Angeles Times that he “didn’t know much about Bryan” while he was preparing for the role. “I think that the allegations and things were, believe it or not, honestly something I was not aware of, and that is what it is,” the actor said, before suggesting that “perhaps that was Freddie himself” pushing the cast and crew to persevere through the adversity that came when, according to reports, Singer stopped showing up to the set and was fired with weeks of filming to go. (Also around this time, in December 2017, Singer was hit with another lawsuit alleging sexual assault of a minor — an accusation he swiftly and vehemently denied.)

When asked how fans can reconcile their love of the film with their disdain for Singer’s prior actions, Malek subtly suggested that the crew did what they could, given the circumstance. “I think they can understand that Bryan Singer was fired from the film. And that can be something that they can look at from a perspective of understanding why they can appreciate the film,” he said, then redirected the questioning away from the controversy to thank Dexter Fletcher, who directed the remainder of the movie — not unlike the deflection the Bohemian Rhapsody team utilized at the Golden Globes.

Gwilym Lee, who portrays guitarist Brian May in the Queen biopic, reacted to Malek’s interview with a hearty hear, hear. “This says it all…a leading man became a leader,” he wrote on Twitter. But not all fans are satisfied, questioning how much (or how little) Malek really knew about Singer’s nefarious reputation.

But the biggest question that remains — and the only one that can really change at this point — is what happens to Singer moving forward. Will he be exiled from the Hollywood elite, like Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and others before him, or will he get that $10 million payday from Millennium Films to direct a “female-empowered” Red Sonja remake?
