Kashmir’s ‘half-widows’ launch calendar to remember disappeared

Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir Safiya Azad, 43, dreads forgetting her husband. She doesn’t know whether he is dead or alive.

Every day, for the past 26 years, she has tried to remember him.

On a Spring afternoon in April 1993, Humayun Azad, a businessman, disappeared after he was picked up by Indian paramilitary forces a kilometre away from his home in Indian-administered Kashmir‘s main city of Srinagar.

Under the banner of the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP)on January 15, Safiya and a group of other Kashmiris whose relatives have disappeared launched a calendar with sketches and stories of their missing family members.

Parveena Ahanger, now 65, started the APDP when her son disappeared in the early 1990s.

“This is a unique way for them to keep remembering and looking for their family members as they await their return,” she told Al Jazeera.

“The dead dies, he has a grave. The disappeared, they do not let us mourn properly. They ache in us every moment,” she added, through tears.

The calendar features 12 disappeared people – one for each month. A blood stain marks the day of their disappearance.

Among the missing are a student, farmer, labourer, tailor and a driver.

I even saved a half-burned cigarette that he had smoked on the morning of his disappearance. Until a few years ago, his clothes remained hanging in the wardrobe.

Safiya Azad, wife of missing businessman Humayun Azad

The case of Humayun Azad, a broad-faced man with a thin moustache, is highlighted in April.

Next to his sketch are the words: “I buried you, again and again, in my heart once, in my soul twice and in my memory every once in a while.”

According to Suhail Naqshbandi, the artist who sketched the missing men, “it was an emotional experience.”

He told Al Jazeera: “The pictures were very small and blurry. And the existence of these young [men] seems to be blurry too. I had to imagine and guess the details. You do not know what has happened to this man.”

Human rights groups say at least 8,000 have disappeared since 1989.

Some were picked up by paramilitary forces, according to witnesses, and others simply left their homes and never returned.

Most disappearances, the rights groups say, took place in the 1990s and early 2000s, when the armed-conflict was at its peak in the restive region.

People like Safiya have been seeking answers for more than two decades.

“I was 16 when I got married to him. He was 24,” she said.

Their son, Dawood Ahmad, was six months old when Humayan went missing.

“From police stations to jails … I looked for him everywhere,” she said.

She now lives at her in-laws’ home in Srinagar.

“It might have happened 20 years ago or more. It might not be a story for people to hear any more. But for me, everything is so fresh in my memory.”

‘Half-widows’

A “half-widow” , a term specifically for women whose husbands have disappeared, Safiya was married for two years before Humayan went missing.

On that day, a neighbour told Safiya that her partner had been taken away.

“After that, we never saw him.”

She clung to hope when some prisoners said they saw her husband in an infamous interrogation centre in Srinagar known as Papa 1.

The centre had been used to extract information from rebels in the 1990s when the armed rebellion against Indian rule began in the disputed territory.

“It elevated my hope that he was alive. I went to the torture centre every day. I sat there from morning to evening. I would take grapes for him or something else and hand it over to the security guards at the gate to give him. But I never got a glimpse of him,” said Safiya.

Once, she sent him a packed suitcase.

“I sent him clothes, toothpaste, soap, a towel, slippers. He was fond of chewing gum and I sent a pack of chewing gum too,” she said, “but I do not know whether it reached him.”

She claimed that a legal case she filed offered no results, so she joined APDP.

Every 10th day of the month, relatives of the disappeared hold a sit-in protest, demanding the whereabouts of their loved ones.

“Until 2000, I would get a message from someone, saying that they saw him in the torture centre. Then the messages suddenly stopped,” said Safiya.

Despondent, she wrote poetry and letters to her husband.

“I lost all of my writing when the flood hit Kashmir in 2014. I even saved a half-burned cigarette that he had smoked on the morning of his disappearance. Until a few years ago, his clothes remained hanging in the wardrobe. With me, everything at home waited for him,” she said.

Safiya worked at a nursery, which provided income and an education for their son, who is now in his twenties.

“In all these years and today, I still have only hope that [Humayun] is alive and will return.

“I have kept my son away from this struggle because it consumes a person.”

Whenever there is a knock on the door. I feel it’s him.

Safiya Azad, wife of missing businessman Humayun Azad

Khurram Parvez, a Kashmir-based human rights activist and chairman of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFID), blamed the government for inaction.

“Cases linger,” he said. “In many cases, the perpetrators have also been identified but no justice has been delivered.”

But Vijay Kumar, adviser to the governor of Jammu and Kashmir state, told Al Jazeera: “There is a proper system in place in the administration if someone has a complaint or asks for an inquiry.

“There are always set mechanisms in the government of India and other places to monitor some of these cases. Many cases have been enquired.”

In June last year, the United Nations, in its first-ever human rights report on Kashmir, said: “There is also almost total impunity for enforced or involuntary disappearances, with little movement towards credibly investigating complaints, including into alleged sites of mass graves in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region.”

While families face a long legal struggle, Safiya said the more challenging battle is emotional.

“Whenever there is a knock on the door,” she said, “I feel it’s him.”

The Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics 115-111 on the road Saturday at the TD Garden behind 33 points from forward Kevin Durant.

The game went down to the wire, with the teams tied at 111 following a three-pointer from C’s guard Marcus Smart with 1:08 remaining.

However, Warriors guards Klay Thompson and Steph Curry each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch while the Celtics went 0-of-4 in the final minute.

C’s point guard Kyrie Irving dropped 32 points and 10 assists.

The two teams face off again Tuesday, March 5, in Oakland, California.

Kevin Durant Drops 33 Points as Warriors Outlast Kyrie Irving, Celtics 115-111

The Golden State Warriors continue to cruise regardless of competition, earning a 115-111 road win over the Boston Celtics on Saturday night.

A pair of Klay Thompson free throws helped the Warriors take a two-point lead in the final minute, and Stephen Curry sealed the win with two more at the line.

Kevin Durant scored 33 points with nine rebounds at TD Garden, while Curry added 24 points. The Warriors (35-14) extended their winning streak to 10 games, their longest of the season, with seven of those wins coming on the road.

The Celtics (30-19) snapped their five-game winning streak despite 32 from Kyrie Irving.

Celtics Must Free Young Stars to Reach Potential

Irving has been playing at an MVP level, but he needs help if the Celtics are going to contend for a championship.

The good news is there is help to be found on the roster; the team just needs to unleash it.

With Irving out during last year’s playoff run, young stars Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier carried the load while showing they can compete with anyone. Unfortunately, each has taken a step back during the regular season.

Tatum finally exploded with 20 points, including 14 points in the third quarter.

He also had a lot of confidence with the ball:

Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA

Tatum is stepping up. This is great to see for Boston.

The second-year player has the talent to have this type of production every night, but he has a tendency to fade if he struggles early. He also disappeared in crunch time against the Warriors with zero points in the fourth quarter and barely got noticed.

The Celtics need him to play like he did in the third quarter much more often.

Boston must also let Brown and Rozier get into more of a rhythm so they can make the type of impact they had last postseason.

Rozier scored 26 points Wednesday with Irving out, and while no one is suggesting he should play over the All-Star, he still needs more minutes to make the type of big plays we are used to seeing.

Brown had a strong first half and finished with 10, although it’s clear he is capable of more.

And while Gordon Hayward has had flashes of strong play this season, he hasn’t been the player he was before his ankle injury. Head coach Brad Stevens needs to limit his minutes in important games until he proves he can make a bigger impact.

We have seen what the young core can do; the Celtics just need to let them reach their potential to help the playoff push.

DeMarcus Cousins Fits Perfectly with Warriors Despite Foul Trouble

In his fourth game back from an Achilles injury that cost him a year of action, DeMarcus Cousins looks far from the player who was selected to the last four All-Star Games. But despite the rust, his addition is still scary for opponents.

The center finished with 15 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes, adding three steals and one block.

Just as importantly, he looked like a Warriors player on the court, including a perfectly run fast break with an assist to Durant:

(via @NBA)

https://t.co/jueyXC91n3

He also knocked down a three-point shot, as he now sits 6-of-9 from behind the arc so far this season.

Cousins was also in key position to make plays down the stretch, showing the type of trust the coaching staff already has in him.

Of course, there were plenty of complaints on the defensive end. He got into foul trouble early and spent nearly the entire fourth quarter with five fouls, limiting his aggressiveness defensively.

The Celtics also took advantage of his slow movement defending pick-and-rolls, which he will need to improve.

But there are more reasons to be encouraged for a player coming off major surgery. As he gets more into playing shape, Cousins will make Golden State even tougher to defend.

Boston Shows It’s a Championship-Level Team with Effort

The Celtics came into the season as the favorite to win the Eastern Conference, but a slow start caused some doubts to arise. They were just 10-10 to begin the year and 25-18 after three straight losses a couple of weeks ago.

However, this is the team many expected to see all year long.

While there were some bad opponents during the recent winning streak, Boston has stepped up against top competition, including the win over the Toronto Raptors. However, the performance against the Warriors—even in a loss—is what really should send a message that this squad is a legitimate contender.

Irving showed he can carry the team for stretches if needed, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter, including some difficult shots:

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

Kyrie is RIDICULOUS.

(via @Celtics)

https://t.co/aQKNTG4BEl

The Warriors double-teamed him in the final few possessions to prevent the upset.

There were strong performances from both the veterans and the young players, while a lot of the potential remains untapped.

If the Celtics play at this level every night, they can beat any team in the NBA.

Though not every team that plays Golden State close is a contender, this was a game that could have easily been played in June as part of the NBA Finals. The product on the court Saturday finally matched what we were expecting on paper.

Not everyone loves moral victories in a loss, but the Celtics can build off this defeat and turn it into a dominant run against the Eastern Conference.

What’s Next?

Golden State will finish its road trip Monday against an Indiana Pacers team trying to recover from the loss of Victor Oladipo. Boston will remain home for a battle against the Brooklyn Nets on Monday.

North Beats South in Senior Bowl 2019 as QB Daniel Jones Wins MVP

The North defeated the South 34-24 in the 2019 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, on Saturday, with Duke Blue Devils quarterback Daniel Jones taking home MVP honors.

It was a defensive struggle during the first half, although Will Grier and the South squad had some early success. Grier led the South to the end zone on the game’s opening drive by going 75 yards in just less than five minutes.

Grier led the South on another scoring drive during his next possession as well. His ability to extend a play was on full display during a 34-yard pass-and-catch to Clemson Tigers wideout Hunter Renfrow on a third down:

Grier completed four of his eight pass attempts for 61 yards in one quarter of action. This was his first game action since Nov. 23, as he skipped his team’s bowl game last month.

Speaking of Renfrow, the two-time national champ opened some eyes with a 21-yard punt return moments before halftime:

On the other side of the field, Missouri Tigers star Drew Lock had his latest opportunity to try to establish himself as a potential first-round pick. The 6’4″, 225-pound Mizzou signal-caller showed scouts his improv skills with an underhanded throw late in the first:

Lock, who ranks 32nd on Bleacher Report draft expert Matt Miller’s latest big board, finished the day 9-of-14 for 57 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.

NFL.com’s Chase Goodbread was among those impressed by Lock:

Looked good. Feet really calm in the pocket when it was clean. Scouts will like the ball he threw incomplete to McLaurin better than anything he completed. https://t.co/Dt3Hz67Uu2

The North offense eventually settled in and was able to gain some momentum after halftime.

Jones had the strongest performance of any quarterback on the day. The 6’5″, 220-pound passer led the North on a pair of scoring drives to open the second half, showing off his mobility on one of the touchdowns:

He also found the end zone through the air, although UMass receiver Andy Isabella was a big reason why:

That performance caught Miller’s eye:

Jones finished the day 8-of-11 for 115 yards, two touchdowns (one rushing) and zero interceptions. The Blue Devils star landed at 28th on Miller’s latest big board.

Of note, Penn State’s Trace McSorley went 7-of-13 for 59 yards and recorded eight rushing yards as well for the North squad. Washington State’s Gardner Minshew (1-of-8, four yards) and Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham (4-of-5, 30 yards, fumble) also saw time on the field for the South.

Quarterbacks weren’t the only ones on the field, of course. Isabella (seven catches, 74 yards, one touchdown), Ohio State receiver Terry McLaurin (four catches, 53 receiving yards; one rush, 19 rushing yards) and Louisiana Tech edge-rusher Jaylon Ferguson (sack; No. 22 on Miller’s big board) were among the other top performers.

While the players don’t know where they might land in the NFL draft, many on the North side were honorary Oakland Raiders for the day, as coach Jon Gruden was rewarding his playmakers with helmet stickers:

That gave players a little extra incentive for the showcase game. And it may have played a role in turning an early 9-0 deficit into a 34-24 victory.

Players now have about one month to prepare for the 2019 NFL scouting combine, which will run from Feb. 26 through March 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Matt LeBlanc stole props from ‘Friends’ set for the best reason

The fascination with all things Friends doesn’t let up, even after the actors in the beloved sit-com have moved way on. It’s been nearly 15 years since the final episode aired. But with the show still streaming on Netflix it really refuses to die.

Matt LeBlanc, who played the goofy Joey and still fields questions about the show all the time, had some new secrets to divulge on Friday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he was pushing his new season of Man with a Plan.

LeBlanc admitted to having taken some nostalgia-inducing items from the apartment set where his fictional self lived with Chandler (played by Matthew Perry). One is the foosball table and the other is the Magna Doodle magnetic drawing toy that the roommate hung on the apartment door. The Magna Doodle even made it into the spin-off series Joey.

But LeBlanc didn’t really steal it. He gave it to a crew member who would draw designs on the board before filming episodes. LeBlanc said the crew member was an electrician on the show who added a fun touch to the set. The actor notes that he probably could’ve sold it for a lot more money, but this is a much cuter story.

Another show souvenir LeBlanc grabbed? “A sh*t-ton of cash.”
