Let this quest to pet 100 dogs in one day at a dog show inspire you

A dog show is already a magical land where dreams come true, but one innovative attendee made a good thing even better.

Sally Kuchar arrived at the Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog Show on Saturday with one goal: Pet 100 dogs. It was an optimal place for such an undertaking. The Golden Gate show is a bench show, which means that the dogs hang on on assigned benches (and are available for meet and greets) while they’re not being shown.

“Folks are encouraged to walk around and familiarize themselves with the breeds, and petting is very, very encouraged,” Kuchar explained via email.

So Kuchar made the rounds. Throughout the day, she took 100 videos of 100 dogs, each better (or good-er, if you’re still into that lingo) than the last.

A few highlights:

Kuchar said that although she’s been to the Golden Gate show five times before, this is the first time she’s taken on the 100 dog challenge. “I like doing public challenges because it holds me accountable,” she said.

As for her favorite dog, that’s obviously #100. (It’s her own dog, Skippy.) But she did also enjoy #64. “We just got along really well,” she said.

And for the most part, the dog owners were cool with Kuchar’s wholesome project. She only had one weird run-in: “I was having a great conversation with a bulldog’s owner and did let her know that I was trying to pet 100 dogs,” she said. “She looked at me quizzically and changed the subject.”

She’ll understand once she sees Kuchar’s Twitter thread.

Killing of Palestinian by Israeli settlers ‘shocking’: UN envoy

The UN’s Middle East envoy has termed the killing of a Palestinian man by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank “shocking and unacceptable”.

Nikolay Mladenov on Sunday called on Israel to “put an end to settler violence and bring those responsible to justice”.

Hamdi Naasan, 38, succumbed to his wounds on Saturday near the village of al-Mugheir after Israeli settlers from the nearby illegal settlement of Adei Ad fired shots.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, Naasan was shot with a live bullet in the back. At least 30 other Palestinians were injured, of whom six were shot with live ammunition, accoding to Maan news agency.

Today’s violence in #AlMughayer is shocking & unacceptable! #Israel must put an end to settler violence & bring those responsible to justice. My thoughts & prayers go out to the family of the #Palestinian man killed & those injured. All must condemn violence, stand up to terror.

    — Nickolay E. MLADENOV (@nmladenov) January 26, 2019

Thousands gathered in al-Mugheir village to attend the funeral of Naasan.

The Israeli army temporarily obstructed mourners from reaching the burial site by putting up a roadblock between the highway and a road leading to the village. In an ensuing confrontation, the Israeli army arrested two Palestinian teenagers.

The Palestinian leaves behind his wife and four children – the oldest, a 10-year-old and the youngest, a one-year-old baby.

Al-Mugheir, a village with around 4,000 residents, is surrounded by four Israeli settlements, considered illegal under international law.

    ‘They came to kill’

Ataf Naasan, the slain Palestinian’s cousin, told Al Jazeera that a group of settlers carrying weapons attacked the outskirts of their village on Saturday at noon.

Eyewitnesses told Al Jazeera that Naasan was killed while was carrying one of the wounded to an ambulance.

Israel arrests settler teenagers accused of stoning car

“When we came, they started shooting at us,” Ataf said. “They aimed at our heads, our stomachs. They were firing randomly.”

“When he put [the wounded man] down, they shot him,” Ataf said.

Ataf emphasised that the settlers were carrying extra rounds of ammunition.

“I’ve never seen this before,” he said. “They were prepared, and they came to kill.”

Al-Mugheir residents told Al Jazeera that the Israeli army witnessed the events from 2km away, but did not intervene.

Around 3,000 people attended the funeral of Hamdi Nasaan killed in a settler attack [Annelies Keuleers/Al Jazeera]

“The army did not come until the settlers finished their ammunition. Then they started shooting tear gas and rubber bullets at us,” Ataf said. “Can you believe this? They attacked us instead of arresting the settlers.”

The Israeli army said in a statement that a settler from the nearby illegal Israeli settlement of Adei Ad had a “physical confrontation” with several Palestinians and was slightly hurt.

“Shortly thereafter, a conflict erupted between Israeli civilians [settlers] and Palestinians in the area, in which live rounds were fired by the civilians [settlers],” the statement said.

Tzuriel Amiur, spokesperson from the illegal settlement of Adei Ad said that a settler had been “attacked by a group of Palestinians who stabbed him and threw stones at him”.

In response, a group of settlers headed for al-Mugheir. They were then “ambushed” by as many as 200 Palestinians throwing rocks, Amiur said.

When the army arrived, “civilians and soldiers were afraid for their lives and opened fire”, he said.

Amin Abu Alya, head of the al-Mugheir village council, however, said on Saturday that the settlers had opened fire before the army moved in.

“At the beginning it was settlers shooting, then the army came and fired tear gas,” he told AFP news agency by phone.

Asked who shot Naasan, he said it was settlers.

    ‘Rocks against guns’

The village of al-Mugheir has long been victim of “price tag attacks”, in which Israeli settlers, often religious extremists, enter the village to damage Palestinian property.

On January 17, settlers cut 35-year-old olive trees with electric saws and painted stars of David on rocks in an olive grove belonging to Abed al-Hai Naasan, a resident of the village, the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, reported.

The violence in al-Mugheir has increased in the last two months, as the villagers started organising peaceful marches every Friday to protest the establishment of a new illegal outpost, Mevo Shiloh, in an abandoned army base in the area.

The villagers slammed the Israeli army and the civil administration for promising to evacuate the outpost, illegal under Israeli law, and not living up to the promise.

“They just let [settlers] do whatever they want,” Ataf said. “There is no difference between the army and the settlers.

“But we are not afraid of them,” he said. “We will keep resisting until they leave. Rocks against guns. We’ll fight them with our bare chests.”

Naasan is the fourth Palestinian to be killed in the last two days.

On Saturday, Ayman Hamed, 18, was put to rest in his village of Silwad in the occupied West Bank after the Israeli army shot and killed him the previous day. The Israeli army claimed he was throwing stones.

Israeli police killed another Palestinian, Riyad Shamasneh, during a high-speed chase near the Old City’s Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem on Saturday morning.

Israel PM urged to expand illegal settlements ahead of election

Gaza resident Ehab Abed, 25, was killed by Israeli fire during the weekly Friday demonstrations near Israeli fence.

The violence in al-Mugheir comes days after Israel charged a Jewish teenager with manslaughter for the death of a Palestinian woman in the occupied West Bank.

Over 600,000 settlers live in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, which Israel has occupied since the 1967 war.

With additional reporting by Annelies Keuleers from al-Mugheir in occupied West Bank

Elon Musk says ominous music, ‘Rick and Morty’ will keep Teslas safe

Nothing keeps out thieves and ne’er-do-wells more effectively than a D Minor musical composition.

That’s the latest idea Tesla CEO Elon Musk proposed for his 360-camera theft prevention “Sentry Mode” that he plans to bring to electric Tesla cars with Enhanced Autopilot. He says a “rough” beta will be released sometime in February.

The latest details of the car monitoring system — that sound like a joke, but knowing Musk are possibly real(??) — were introduced on his Twitter page Saturday night. Musk claims the watchful cameras will play Bach’s Toccata and Fugue composition. He also said thieves might hear the metal versions of the classical piece.

Musk then made a reference to a Rick and Morty episode where the smart car is told to “keep Summer safe.” So maybe be prepared for violent, over-the-top anti-theft measures from the animated show intended to protect character Summer Smith (but probably not):

Musk first proposed Sentry Mode on Jan. 22 after someone posted a dent on their car door and expressed the wish they could’ve been recording the car while it sat exposed and vulnerable.

Soon, Tesla owners could have to worry about people messing with their expensive electric cars just to hear a little classical music.

NFL Rumors: Redskins Planning for Alex Smith to Miss 2019 After Gruesome Injury

    Jeff Haynes/Associated Press

A devastating broken leg not only cost Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith the final six games of 2018, it could cost him the entire 2019 season.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the team is planning on being without him the entire year and would be “pleasantly surprised” if he is able to contribute in any way.

Smith first suffered the injury after taking a brutal hit in November. He spent four weeks in the hospital and underwent several surgeries after the spiral leg fracture became infected.

Daniel Radcliffe has a Super Bowl favorite and a message for Tom Brady

    Image: Miles Mortensen/Invision/AP/REX/Shutterstock

    2016%252f09%252f16%252f63%252fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde1lza2.c97cf.jpg%252f90x90By Adam Rosenberg

Daniel Radcliffe, who will one day be introduced as something other than the star of the Harry Potter series (but today isn’t that day), is ready for the Super Bowl.

He revealed as much in an interview with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, which Radcliffe is attending to promote his upcoming TBS series Miracle Workers. Asked who he’s rooting for in the Feb. 3 showdown between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Ram, he responded with a succinct, matter-of-fact answer: “Rams.”

SEE ALSO: Pottermore’s unnecessary poop tweet reminds us that wizards are gross, we’re all overthinking things

Then he added: “Because, like, the whole world is rooting against the Patriots. Like… sorry.”

That’s mostly true. There are a few U.S. states that fall under the banner of “New England” and most of those people are probably backing the Pats. But this is also a team that’s been to the Super Bowl nine times since the year 2000, with five wins. They’re not exactly an underdog.

(The fact that team owner Robert Kraft, coach Bill Belichick, and quarterback Tom Brady are all Donald Trump pals hasn’t helped the Pats popularity either.)

Radcliffe accepts the dominance of Brady, who has led his team to all five Super Bowl wins over the years. He doesn’t think the quarterback, who is regularly called out as professional football’s G.O.A.T., should retire.

But Radcliffe also doesn’t mince words about Brady’s stated politics, and his attachment to a piece of political memorabilia that many have come to regard as a symbol of the current administration’s hateful beliefs.

“No [he shouldn’t retire],” Radcliffe exclaimed. “But he should also stop winning things. Take that MAGA hat out your locker. I feel like that was the moment where, as a country, we were all like ‘Oh come on dude! You’re awesome and we’re behind you; don’t put that in there!’”

Bashir says Sudan protesters trying to emulate Arab Spring

Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has said protesters in the country are trying to imitate the 2011 Arab Spring and blamed unidentified outside groups for trying to destablise the region.

During a visit to Cairo on Sunday, where he met Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Bashir said the the unrest in Sudan was “an attempt to copy the so-called Arab Spring for Sudan.”

It is Bashir’s second overseas visit since last month, when protests triggered by a hike in bread prices erupted in the country. The demonstrations have also called for Bashir, who has been in power for nearly 30 years, to step down as the country’s leader.

Sisi said he was eager to maintain the close historical ties between the two countries, while Bashir said the protests against him were not as bad as they seemed, accusing outside groups of trying to undermine his rule in what he compared with Egypt’s own experience during its 2011 uprising.

“There are many negative organizations working on shaking the stability and security of the region,” Bashir said at a joint press conference after the meeting.

How bread has emerged as the main symbol of Sudan unrest

“We acknowledge that there is a problem, we are not claiming there is nothing but it is not as big as described by some media platforms. It’s an attempt to copy the so-called Arab Spring for Sudan.”

Citing what he said was the “harmful agitation” that such countries had witnessed, he added: “The Sudanese people are alert and will not allow for any intrusion or attempt to destabilise the security of Sudan.”

The protests – which began in the northeastern town of Atbara and have spread to several cities – initially erupted over the rising costs of bread and fuel and other economic hardships, including skyrocketing inflation and limits on bank withdrawals.

But they quickly morphed into calls for Bashir, who has been in power for 29 years, to step aside.

Authorities have used tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition to quell the unrest and imposed emergency laws and night-time curfews in some cities.

Officials say 30 people have died in the protests, however, rights groups have put the death toll at more than 40.

Bashir, who took power in a 1989 military coup, has said any change of leadership could only come through the ballot box. He is expected to run for another term in office next year.

He was indicted in 2010 by the International Criminal Court for genocide in Darfur, and restricts his travel to friendly Arab and African countries.

Sudan’s economy has struggled to recover in recent years following the loss of about 80 percent of its oil reserves with the secession of South Sudan in 2011.

    Reinforcing ‘bilateral relations’

Meanwhile, Sisi, who has been Egypt’s president since 2014, says he is working to restore stability following the turmoil triggered by the country’s uprising eight years ago, overseeing a widespread crackdown on opposition.

He said Bashir’s visit was “the culmination of the numerous efforts we made in the past year to reinforce bilateral relations.”

Concern grow over fate of protesters held in Sudan

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry voiced support for Sudan’s embattled government during a visit to Khartoum in December.

“Egypt is confident that Sudan will overcome the present situation,” Shoukry told reporters at the time, after talks with Bashir.

“Egypt is always ready to support Sudan,” he said.

Relations between the two countries had deteriorated when Egypt conceded the two Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia in 2016, leading to a reconfiguration of Cairo’s maritime borders with Khartoum.

Sudan filed a complaint with the UN Security Council in 2017 accusing Egypt of attempting to illegally annex the border area, commonly referred to as the Halayeb triangle, which has long been a thorn in the two nations’ fragile relationship.

Broke English majors, take your places. A homeowner in Alberta, Canada is selling her $1.7 million (CAD) home via essay contest.

Alla Wagner is searching for a new owner for her 5,000 square foot home, which, according to a report from CNN, has “three bedrooms, three full baths and two half baths, in addition to a wine cellar, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a pond.” Not bad.

Here’s how it works: Entrants must write a short letter (maximum 350 words) explaining why they should get the house, then mail or email it to Wagner along with a $25 entry fee. Once Wagner collects roughly 68,000 entry fees — enough to cover the house’s value — she will publish a group of semi-finalist essays on social media so people can vote for their favorites. Then, the 500 entries with the most votes will be whittled down by an “independent panel of judges,” who will select three finalists. These three finalists will then be interviewed. One of them will get the house.

SEE ALSO: Apple wants you to send your best iPhone photos in return for, cough, exposure

The contest began on Jan. 5, and Wagner plans to run it until April 5. If there are nearly enough entries by then, she’ll extend it another three months. If she’s nowhere near her goal, she’ll cancel the contest and refund everyone’s entry fees.

As of Friday, Wagner had collected around 5,000 entries. The contest is getting more attention, though, so 68,000 may not be too far away. If you want a $25 mansion, better get that entry in.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Antonio Brown may be heading toward a divorce.

That said, neither side appears to be all-in on signing the papers.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Brown “hasn’t closed the door” on playing for the Steelers in 2019 and that the team remains in control of any trade talks. Brown and his representation have not been granted permission to seek a trade partner.

Rapoport noted a trade is the “preferred outcome.”
