No deal in sight at launch of talks to prevent a second shutdown

Congressional deal-makers started negotiations Wednesday in hopes of striking a border security compromise that could stave off a second debilitating shutdown in two-and-a-half weeks, but they found no agreement on whether they would fund President Donald Trump’s border wall.

Underlying the talks is a debate about whether to broaden the scope to include deals on the debt limit and immigration policy, or to keep the negotiations limited to increasing funding for various border security efforts.

Story Continued Below

“We need to go big,” said Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.).

The conference committee has until Feb. 15 to reach a deal before funding runs out again for nine of 15 federal departments, upon expiration of the continuing resolution that Trump signed Friday to pause the government shutdown.

Because Congress is expected to approve only a fraction of the $5.7 billion the president wants for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, Trump will likely have to decide whether to declare a national emergency to shift funding toward his wall project or spur another shutdown by digging in on his ultimatum.

If the negotiators fail to craft a product that can pass both chambers in that time and earn the president’s signature, funding is likely to lapse again for the departments of Transportation, Agriculture, Homeland Security, Treasury, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, State and Interior, as well as the IRS, National Science Foundation, FDA and EPA.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump put the 17 negotiators on notice that they are “wasting their time” if they are “not discussing or contemplating” more money for a border wall or physical barrier. But while some Republican conferees said a final deal should include extra funding for barriers, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are emphasizing investment in border security personnel and technology.

House Appropriations Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) and the panel’s top Republican, Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), both said during the meeting that they want increased money for border immigration judges, detection technology and resources to help meet humanitarian needs of migrants, especially children.

Democrats plan to unveil a proposal as early as Wednesday afternoon for border security investment, including money for hiring another 1,000 customs officers and buying new imaging technology for land ports, plus repairing and improving Border Patrol stations.

Some Democrats have expressed a willingness in recent days to fund additional border fencing. They have so far rejected the idea, however, of giving extra money for a concrete wall as a trade for deportation protections for refugees and young immigrants. And conference negotiations are not expected to produce a big deal on border security or immigration policy.

Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) told reporters before the meeting that he thinks negotiations should “start with ordinary appropriations” and could broaden to include larger policy items, although he prefers to keep a narrower focus. He said the final compromise should, however, include some additional investment in “strategic barriers” along the border.

“Smart technology alone does not actually stop anyone from crossing into the U.S. illegally,” Shelby said.

If Trump opposes the product the conferees craft, Shelby said, it would be “hard” to override the president’s veto, but not impossible. Such an override would require the support of two-thirds of lawmakers in each chamber.

Officials in New York have announced “an investigation into Apple’s failure to warn consumers about the FaceTime bug and slow response to addressing the issue.”

SEE ALSO: Here’s how to disable FaceTime on your iPhone, iPad or Mac

Apple pulled support for its group calling feature in FaceTime late Monday, after it was reported that the feature could be exploited to eavesdrop on people without their consent. A teenager reportedly discovered the bug a week earlier while playing Fortnite with his friends, and his mother unsuccessfully tried to report it to Apple.

Now, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Andrew Cuomo are saying the company didn’t react to the issue fast enough.

“This FaceTime breach is a serious threat to the security and privacy of the millions of New Yorkers who have put their trust in Apple and its products over the years. My office will be conducting a thorough investigation into Apple’s response to the situation, and will evaluate the company’s actions in relation to the laws set forth by the State of New York,” James said in a statement

Investigators are also requesting that people affected by the bug report their experiences to the state’s Division of Consumer Protection.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Teslas, EVs struggle in the polar vortex

Electric vehicle owners are complaining that their cars aren't working properly during record low temperatures.

Electric vehicle owners are discovering the harsh reality of driving a battery-powered vehicle in below-freezing temperatures like those sweeping across the Midwest.

Most drivers know in theory that cold weather adversely affects the car’s and its battery’s abilities, but it’s another thing to see your range plummet on the dashboard next to the frigid outside and interior temperature. In these type of conditions the vehicles have a hard time warming up. Even charging is slowed down. So on Wednesday, EV drivers were dealing with way less range than they were used to — and some Tesla owners couldn’t even get into their frozen cars.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk last week promised ambiguous cold weather improvements coming in an upcoming computer update, but those didn’t come in time for this Siberian-like cold snap.

Tesla sent over its winter driving tips that acknowledge its cars will suffer from “increased range consumption” when it’s cold out. Drivers certainly noticed the limited range in the negative temperatures. The Model X 100D normally has close to 290 miles of juice. In negative temps, one driver reported 120 miles listed as its range.

It’s certainly not all wintery bliss as a Model 3 video Tesla put out after Christmas would it make it seem. Tesla has a cold-weather testing site in Alaska, so the cars have proven they can handle some tough weather. But Wednesday’s weather is extreme. Even after heating the car interior from the app, some reported difficulties getting into the vehicles.

Chevy Bolt is another all-electric car put to its limits in the extreme cold. A Chevy engineer passed along tips to help with depleted range as the battery works to warm up the rest of the car. One piece of advice: warm up the car while it’s plugged in before you start driving. Another is to use the seat warmers instead of the car heater since that’s battery intensive.

For some drivers it’s just a matter of getting into their vehicle. Tesla’s sleek door handles don’t seem prepared for what the National Weather Service is calling “life-threatening wind chills.”

The cars have retractable door handles that usually open automatically when you approach the vehicle or push on it. But all the ice is keeping the handles stuck — though traditional car handles with a lever are also struggling in the frosty conditions.

.@elonmusk .@Tesla I love you but can you hire a designer/engineer from places where the weather gets bad so that we don’t have to deal with bad design like this again?? This is after 30+ minutes of preheating the car to 80 degrees. Also wipers and side mirrors were frozen too pic.twitter.com/HO8igw131x

— sa ra (@sarahthanif) January 30, 2019

So many oversights by @Tesla in the design of the Model 3 in regards to cold weather. I shouldn’t have to plant my feet and shove a broomstick into the door handle to pop it open in 28 degree weather. Not everybody lives in California.

— Daniel Wilkinson (@D_Wilky) January 30, 2019

In case you’re wondering what it looks like to climb from back of S to front to get in while in snow boots (driver’s door frozen). Also pictured are Lucky jeans sure to turn white seats blue. This was after preheating at 74 for 20 mins. 😁❄ pic.twitter.com/oTkjYxpSnl

— Tesla Model 3 Fan (@teslamodel3fan) January 30, 2019

Other EV owners are accepting the reduced mileage in the cold weather, a known problem with electric vehicles (and other lithium-ion products), and carrying on.

Now this is really cold. It doesn’t get any better that a good -7 degree morning in Central Indiana. Fortunately, my all-electric vehicle Nissan Leaf) continues to work well and the heat is on! pic.twitter.com/pwwfjk072d

— Marvin Blade (@blade_marvin) January 30, 2019

That’s an interesting question with a complicated answer.

The Bolt EV manual warns not to let the battery get below -40° as this may cause the battery to freeze and “immobilize the vehicle”.

However, it does not say at what temp the battery heater cannot compensate.

— Technology Connections (@TechConnectify) January 30, 2019

It looks like Autopilot, Tesla’s semi-autonomous driving mode, is handling the snowy conditions without too much trouble as video posted over the weekend showed. Although the car struggled to understand where it was on the road a few times, it made it through the snow storm in one piece.

Now if only drivers could open those frozen doors…

Robert Kraft Says Patriots Would Be Open to Tom Brady Contract Extension

In the least surprising development of Super Bowl week, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft would like to work out a contract extension with Tom Brady

Per ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss, Kraft would have no hesitation about giving the 41-year-old another extension on his deal that is set to expire after the 2019 season.

“Think about it: The last three years we’ve been privileged to go to the Super Bowl with a quarterback in place,” Kraft said. “I would be quite surprised if he didn’t continue for quite a while as our quarterback.”

The last time Brady went through negotiations with the Patriots, he agreed to a restructured contract in August worth $15 million per season and included a variety of performance-based incentive bonuses.

Brady has given the Patriots bargain deals relative to his fellow QBs throughout his career. The three-time NFL MVP had the 11th-highest cap hit among quarterbacks in 2018 at $22 million, behind players like Jimmy Garoppolo ($37 million), Derek Carr ($25 million) and Eli Manning ($22.2 million).

Despite his age, Brady told ESPN.com’s Jeff Darlington there is a “zero” percent chance he will retire regardless of the Patriots’ outcome in Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

There’s no reason for Brady to consider walking away right now. He’s playing in his third straight Super Bowl and has thrown for 691 yards in two wins over the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs this postseason.

Lady Gaga Passionately Defends Kesha In Unsealed Deposition Documents: ‘I Believe Her’

This week, dozens of documents were unsealed in the ongoing legal battle between Dr. Luke and Kesha, who has accused the producer of raping her and refusing to release her from her contract. The newly released document that has everyone talking is Lady Gaga‘s September 2017 deposition, which shows that Gaga fiercely defended Kesha while being questioned by Dr. Luke’s lawyers.

Before the deposition, obtained by The Blast on Tuesday (January 29), began, Gaga’s lawyer prefaced that the singer was experiencing “PTSD” due to her own experiences as “a sex abuse survivor… and this deposition has proved to be a trigger event for Ms. Germanotta.” Gaga then recounted how the first time she met Kesha, the Rainbow singer was wearing only underwear in the back room of Dr. Luke’s studio. She also described how Kesha had confided in her about the alleged abuse that took place over the next few years.

“What we discussed was, what I recall was her immense sadness and depression and fear,” Gaga said. “She was visibly very different than when I had seen her before, and — but I can’t say specifically what exactly we spoke about. I just recall that it was emotional, and I wanted to be there for her.”

The proceedings became combative when Dr. Luke’s attorney asked Gaga if she believed that the sexual assault allegation “bruised” the producer’s reputation.

“If you are asking what my view is of his reputation, I made my view of him and his reputation when I saw her in that back room,” Gaga retorted. “That was an image that — of something that happened to me, and I felt and knew in my heart that she was telling the truth, and I believe her.”

She added that when sexual abuse happens in the music industry, “it is kept extremely secret, and it is compounded by contracts and manipulative power scenarios that actually include this very situation that we are all in right now.”

The most intense point in the conversation occurred when Dr. Luke’s lawyer began talking about “he-said-she-said” scenarios, asking, “You think there has never been a false accusation of rape?” Gaga responded, “You — how about all of the women that are accused of being liars and how she was slut shamed in front of the world, how about that?”

When Dr. Luke’s lawyer then pressed Gaga for “factual knowledge” about what happened between Kesha and the producer, Gaga replied, “Oh, I have factual knowledge of her depression. I have factual knowledge of her need for support and love. I have factual knowledge of the spiral that I watched that girl go down. I have factual knowledge of trauma. I am informed and intelligent about this issue. That girl has experienced serious trauma and she is in the middle of it right now. And you are all a party to it.”

She continued, “Why on earth would this girl tell the entire world what happened? Why on earth? Do you know what it’s like for survivors? Do you know what it’s like to tell people? Don’t you roll your eyes at me. You should be ashamed of yourself.”

Lady Gaga was subpoenaed to testify as part of a defamation lawsuit, in which Luke is suing Kesha over texts that she sent to Gaga about a record executive’s claim that the producer raped Katy Perry. Both Perry and Dr. Luke have denied that claim, but on Tuesday, Kesha’s legal team filed paperwork arguing that those denials do not prove that a rape never occurred.

What is Theresa May’s next Brexit move?

In less than two months, the UK will leave the European Union. What’s less certain now is how it is going to do that.

British MPs have given Theresa May the go ahead to re-negotiate parts of her Brexit agreement.

But they’ve rejected the possibility of leaving the EU without any deal in place.

Meanwhile, the EU is opposing any re-opening of the current agreement which was signed in November after 18 months of negotiations between the UK and EU leaders.

They agreed on the terms of the UK’s departure from the 28-member bloc.

But British MPs rejected it earlier this month, forcing May to come up with a Plan B – with a special focus on the controversial issue of the Irish border.

So, can May convince the EU to open negotiations again? Or could Britain crash out of the block with no deal?

Billie Eilish Stands Over A Friend’s Bed In ‘Bury A Friend’ – Guess What Happens

Michael Hickey/Getty Images

By Trey Alston

Billie Eilish surprised the world when she announced her debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, and unveiled its spooky cover. It looks like that creepy motif will run throughout all the songs, if the single she released on Wednesday (January 30) is any indicator. Eilish dropped the video for “Bury a Friend” and you shouldn’t watch it without a nightlight on and a rosary around your neck.

In the visual, Eilish, with some seriously scary all-black eyes, lurks underneath the bed of a friend before standing and watching him sleep. Throughout the video, hands grip her face and twist her head, and she’s injected with enough needles to make even the bravest people squeamish.

It’s an unsettling accompaniment to the equally hellish, minimalistic song. Eilish’s unique vocal range already makes her music hit differently; the added effect of the video’s spookiness means that “Bury a Friend” will stay with you long after its dark climax.

Eilish’s upcoming album comes out on March 29. It follows her debut EP, Don’t Smile At Me, that dropped in 2017. “Bury a Friend” is a bold indicator of how her album may possibly sound. Make sure you have an exorcist and priest on standby. To get more of her signature minimal style, listen to her contribution to Music Inspired by the Film Roma, “When I Was Older.”

Exploring abandoned mansions on YouTube will fulfill the explorer in you

This post is part of Hard Refresh, a soothing weekly column where we try to cleanse your brain of whatever terrible thing you just witnessed on Twitter.

There’s something about going through someone’s old belongings that is at once fascinating and eerie. However, there’s certainly a fine line between rummaging through postcards at a flea market in Brooklyn and stepping foot into a rotting mansion on Long Island.

You can cross that line of invasion on YouTube. There, you’ll find the corner of lively urban explorers sharing their findings as they explore decaying structures they may or may not have permission to do so.

Growing up I was fascinated with history, so watching people investigate these crumbling mansions and all they contain is strangely soothing. Witnessing others take risks we’d never take ourselves provides a chaotically zen experience.

Watching mansion after decaying mansion, all massive and unkempt, I couldn’t help but find myself glued to the screen. My imagination kicking into high gear: Who lived here? Why did they leave? What would it have been like to live in a house in the middle of the woods with multiple skylights?

While I certainly wouldn’t want to go into any of these places alone, the brave souls that do provide the world some amazing footage. Without speaking, they navigate dark, shuttered houses while shuffling over debris in order to get the perfect shot for those of us who’d rather gaze from non-moldy environments.

Some of the homes have alleged backstories that involve crime, tragedy, or a combination of both. Some have simply outlived their owners and haven’t found new ones, left to their own defenses on lonely acres.

Often the explorers don’t know the whole story of what happened to the owners of the house, or aren’t willing to share details for privacy concerns. While most YouTube comment sections are places where curiosity and intellect go to die, the people commenting on these videos are, for the most part, curious and passionate.

Many commenters also want to make it known that they despise vandalism, which isn’t difficult to comprehend after seeing these vacant spaces drenched in spray-painted swear words and broken glass. Others are detectives and storytellers, rehashing details from the home in question or mentioning a personal link they may have to it.

Privately owned homes are not the only places to be left behind. There’s also videos of resorts, motels, and malls that have seen better days. For example, this forlorn honeymoon resort in the Poconos will have you feeling incredibly strange:

Plenty of these clips likely constitute as trespassing, so we suggest not accessing any property that you don’t have permission to do so. Aside from being illegal, exploring these dilapidated homes can also be extremely dangerous. That being said, we’re grateful for these brave souls that allow us to see places that we otherwise wouldn’t.

If you’re in the mood for reliving the past while remaining fully in the present, these videos are the perfect things to uncover.
