Lakers Rumors: Michael Beasley, More Had Heated Exchange with Luke Walton

The Los Angeles Lakers sans LeBron James hung tough with the Golden State Warriors for three-plus quarters on Saturday, but the Dubs outscored L.A. 27-15 in the fourth for a 115-101 win.

After the game, the Lakers locker room got heated, per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, with forward Michael Beasley and head coach Luke Walton specifically mentioned:

Shams Charania @ShamsCharania

As uncertainty surrounds Lakers into deadline week, several veterans — including Michael Beasley — had an emotionally-charged verbal exchange with head coach Luke Walton postgame tonight, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium. It stopped short of turning physical.

Shams Charania @ShamsCharania

In postgame locker room, Luke Walton preached to players on playing unselfishly, sources said, when several veteran players snapped back. As one source described it, “Heated scene.” https://t.co/w7YXNeVgRl

Los Angeles has gone 10-16 ever since a 17-10 start. The Lakers are also 7-12 without James in the lineup and have lost five of their last seven overall.

The team is also in a state of flux as trade rumors run rampant regarding a sizable chunk in regard to potential deals for New Orleans Pelicans big man Anthony Davis. Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Ivica Zubac and Lonzo Ball have been part of them, per Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times.

Charania reported Josh Hart, Lance Stephenson and Rajon Rondo could be part of a trade, and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN mentioned Beasley’s name.

Naturally, a losing skid coupled with at least eight players not knowing where their professional lives will plant them in a week has to make for a difficult situation.

The season probably hasn’t been easy for the veterans, who were perhaps expecting a deep playoff run rather than a fight just to make the final eight in the West. Charania mentioned a couple players more who got upset on Saturday:

He also mentioned some specific issues while noting that sources thought some good could come out of the airing of grievances:

The key here is whether Walton can steer the team back in the right direction when James is back on the court full time. He returned Thursday but missed Saturday because of “load management” but looks good to go for the remainder of the season.

James could be the best medicine for what ails the Lakers on and off the court, but the relationship between Walton and the veterans is something to keep an eye on after this reported postgame discussion.

At least some (if not all) of the vets figure to stay in town even in the hypothetical scenario where Anthony Davis is traded to Los Angeles before the Thursday deadline, as the young players are the reported centerpieces of any deal. Therefore, any issues would likely need patching up before a playoff run.

Despite all of the L.A. drama, the Lakers aren’t out of it at 27-26. They are just two games behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the final playoff spot with 29 contests remaining.

L.A. hits the court next at the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday.

Triumphant Qatari football team celebrated for historic win

Doha, Qatar – Euphoric crowds lined the Qatari capital’s Corniche to welcome the national football team home after it won the AFC Asian Cup final after a thrilling campaign.

In an historic and decisive victory, Qatar won 3-1 over Japan in a tournament that saw them defeat both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), two countries that are currently part of the quartet blockading Qatar since June 2017.

The team, affectionately known as the Maroons, touched down at Doha’s Old Airport at 16:00 GMT and was welcomed by the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who had just wrapped up his Asia tour.

The team arrived via Oman as direct flights between Qatar and Asian Cup host, the UAE, remain banned due to the nearly two-year blockade imposed on Doha by its Gulf neighbours.

Families, young men and women drove along the seaside road, sitting on car roofs or hanging out the windows, waving the Qatari flag. An elaborate fireworks display filled the night sky as the crowds waited for the team to arrive.

As the team’s flower-covered bus finally made its way along the Corniche, screams and cheers filled the air as fans threw flags and flowers.

Fans tried to get as close as possible to the victory bus, shouting “Qatar, Qatar” and chanting their favourite player’s names. The team raised the silver Asian Cup trophy for the crowd.

Al Jazeera spoke to a cross-section of the fans who came to take part in the historic celebration.

Osama al-Sheikh, 17 from Qatar

“I am delighted. I watched the game at the Mall of Qatar and stayed out celebrating late. By the time I got home, my voice was gone. This football sends a great message to all of the Arabs, especially to the UAE. God is with us. We are victorious in all other aspects like our manners and professionalism.”

“I have been in Qatar for 28 years and I am still on cloud nine from yesterday. My family and I were also here on the Corniche after the final on Friday and today we’ve been here since 4pm to continue celebrating. I congratulate his highness Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and all of the Qatari people.”

Ahmad Amer Saif al-Marghoubi, 61, from Oman

“I have been in Qatar for 35 years. There are no words to describe how happy I am. The Qataris are our brothers. I watched the match at home and when the team scored the first goal my heart was about to burst from joy. My sons play football here at the Rayyan and Shaniya clubs. I also used to play football at a club in Belgium during my youth. We Omanis supported Qatar in the final because they are our brothers, Qatar is dear to our hearts. This victory is for all of the Arab Gulf states – for the Saudis, the Emiratis, the Bahrainis, the Kuwaitis and the Omanis.”

Sheikha, Yara, Mariam and Maya al-Jeda, 16

“It was a momentous event. We are so proud of our national team and what they accomplished, especially in light of this blockade. They won in front of the Emirati fans. I don’t usually watch football but of course, with the national team, it’s different. We’re all behind them.

We watched the first half of the game at home with my family and the second half at a public screening in Bidda Park. It was such a lovely feeling to see Qataris and expatriates supporting and celebrating the national football team. We are especially grateful to the Omani people, who stood by us and supported us in the UAE since we are banned from entering that country.

The football team represented the Qatari people in such an ethical and principled way. The happiness of people here cannot be contained. We are hopeful that in the upcoming World Cup, we will have a good campaign.

To see our team reach the final and win and come home with the trophy is hugely rewarding.”

One year removed from his Achilles injury, Golden State Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins is back and fully healthy.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma learned that the hard way on Saturday night.

Midway through the third quarter, Kuzma attempted to slide in and take a charge on the driving Cousins. Well, not only did he get called for a foul, but the 6’11”, 270-pound Boogie absolutely bodied the 6’9″, 220-pound Kuzma.

Cousins was whistled for a technical foul after staring down his posterized opponent, but that won’t make Kuzma feel any better.

That dunk was part of a 17-5 Golden State run to end the third quarter, giving it a two-point lead entering the final period. The Warriors pulled away for a 115-101 victory, with Cousins (18 points and 10 rebounds) posting a double-double.

NBA Rumors: Bucks Discussing Thon Maker Trade with Multiple Teams

MIAMI, FL - DECEMBER 22: Thon Maker #7 of the Milwaukee Bucks looks on prior to the game against the Miami Heat at American Airlines Arena on December 22, 2018 in Miami, Florida. The Milwaukee Bucks are discussing a potential Thon Maker trade with multiple teams, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

As ESPN’s Malika Andrews pointed out, Maker was the only healthy Buck who did not appear in Saturday’s 131-115 victory over the Washington Wizards. He has not played in any of Milwaukee’s past five games and has logged just four total minutes over the course of the last seven contests.

Last weekend, Wojnarowski reported the former lottery pick would like to be traded to a team that would provide him with a bigger role. Since being drafted 10th overall in 2016, Maker is averaging just 13.3 minutes per game in two-plus seasons.

This season, Maker is averaging 4.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 11.7 minutes per game. He has come off the bench in all 35 of his appearances in 2018-19 after making 46 starts during his first two seasons.

While his overall numbers may not jump off the stat sheet, the 7’1″, 221-pound forward is doing his best to make the most of his limited opportunities. Per NBA.com, he is averaging 19.2 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per 48 minutes this season. Meanwhile, he has a net rating of positive-4.9.

Maker is under contract for the 2019-20 season at $3.6 million, per Spotrac. Still only 21 years old, that’s a reasonable salary for a team to take a chance on him. As he completes his third NBA season, he is eligible to negotiate a rookie contract extension this offseason.

Trump targets Gillespie amid Northam race scandal

Donald Trump

After nearly 24 hours without commenting publicly on the scandal, President Donald Trump tweeted after Northam held a press conference to deny the allegations. | Win McNamee/Getty Images

President Donald Trump on Saturday weighed in on Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s racial controversy — by taking a shot at his 2017 Republican gubernatorial challenger, Ed Gillespie.

“Ed Gillespie, who ran for Governor of the Great State of Virginia against Ralph Northam, must now be thinking Malpractice and Dereliction of Duty with regard to his Opposition Research Staff. If they find that terrible picture before the election, he wins by 20 points!” Trump tweeted.

Story Continued Below

Gillespie appears to remain a sore spot for Trump, who was shunned by the Republican nominee during the high-profile 2017 election.

Gillespie, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee and counselor to George W. Bush, never invited Trump to campaign. After Northam won, Trump tweeted that Gillespie “did not embrace me or what I stand for.”

Northam has been facing calls to resign after a picture in his medical school yearbook page surfaced showing two men dressed in blackface and a Ku Klux Klan outfit. Northam initially apologized for the photo but later insisted that neither of the two men was him.

After nearly 24 hours without commenting publicly on the scandal, Trump tweeted after Northam held a press conference to deny the allegations.

Trump also referred to Northam’s controversial statement on a new bill in Virginia’s legislature that would roll back certain requirements for obtaining second and third-trimester abortions.

“Democrat Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia just stated, ‘I believe that I am not either of the people in that photo,’” Trump wrote online. “This was 24 hours after apologizing for appearing in the picture and after making the most horrible statement on ‘super’ late term abortion. Unforgivable!”

Trump is currently at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. Earlier in the day, he played golf with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

Quint Forgey contributed to this report.

Warner, Kaine urge Northam to resign as presser fails to quell Dems’ fury

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s public insistence Saturday that he was not pictured in a racist photo on his medical school yearbook page did little to placate members of his own party — with the commonwealth’s two Democratic U.S. Senators urging the governor to step down.

“After we watched his press conference today, we called Governor Northam to tell him that we no longer believe he can effectively serve as Governor of Virginia and that he must resign,” Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine said in a joint statement with Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.).

Story Continued Below

“Governor Northam has served the people of the Commonwealth faithfully for many years, but the events of the past 24 hours have inflicted immense pain and irrevocably broken the trust Virginians must have in their leaders,” the lawmakers said. “He should step down and allow the Commonwealth to begin healing.”

The only elected African-American governor in Virginia’s history also explicitly called for Northam’s resignation after his press conference at the governor’s mansion Saturday.

“I stated, earlier, that Gov. Northam’s continuing in office was his choice to make,” tweeted L. Douglas Wilder, who in 1990 became the first black governor of a U.S. state since Reconstruction.

“It is difficult for anyone who watched the press conference today to conclude that he has any other choice … but to resign,” Wilder wrote online.

In a remarkable appearance before reporters on Saturday afternoon, Northam claimed he was neither of the people depicted in blackface or dressed in a Ku Klux Klan robe in the yearbook, despite saying the day before that he was indeed in the photo.

Northam also revealed that he had previously darkened his skin with shoe polish to perform as Michael Jackson for a talent show in San Antonio, which he said he won after performing the late pop star’s signature moonwalk dance.

“I believe then and now that I am not either of the people in that photo,” Northam said, adding, “I recognize that many people will find this difficult to believe” because he admitted Friday that was one of the image’s subjects.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez expressed incredulity in a statement released following Northam’s remarks.

“His past actions are completely antithetical to everything the Democratic Party stands for,” Perez said. “Virginians and people across the country deserve better from their leaders, and it is clear that Ralph Northam has lost their trust and his ability to govern.”

Former Attorney General Eric Holder, a prospective Democratic contender in the 2020 presidential race, tweeted after the press conference that while he has “come to know Ralph Northam as a good, very decent man,” the time had come for the governor to bow out.

“I regretfully conclude that he does not now have the ability to effectively govern and effectively stand for the issues – moral and political – that Virginia and the nation must confront,” Holder wrote online.

Democratic Virginia congressmen Gerry Connolly and Don Beyer said in a joint statement that having expected Northam to resign Saturday morning, “Nothing we have heard since changes our view that his resignation is the only way forward for the Commonwealth.”

In a stinging statement from the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus released as Northam was addressing the media Saturday, the state lawmakers said their confidence in the governor had been “eviscerated.”

“In light of his public admission and apology for his decision to appear in the photo, he has irrevocably lost the faith and trust of the people he was elected to serve. Changing his public story today now casts further doubt on his ability to regain that trust,” the caucus said.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), a member of House Democratic leadership, accused Northam of being dishonest with his constituents.

“Dear Ralph Northam: You now appear to be lying about a mix-up,” Lieu tweeted. “You wrote a caption under the racist photograph. It references your interest in being a doctor, and beer, which is in the photo. You knew exactly what you were doing with that photo. You need to resign.”

Usain Bolt tied the NFL’s 40-yard dash record, was real chill about it

Usain Bolt really just did that.

Pro Football Hall of Fame 2019: Complete List of NFL Inductees to Canton

0 of 8

    Ed Zurga/Associated Press

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced eight inductees for the class of 2019 on Saturday night.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed, Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, New England Patriots cornerback Ty Law, New York Jets center Kevin Mawae, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt and Chiefs safety Johnny Robinson were all selected for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, by a 48-member selection committee.

Each new inductee will be enshrined during a ceremony at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August.

Here is a closer look at the inductees and what they accomplished over the course of their football careers en route to being recognized as some of the greatest performers and contributors in the history of the sport.

1 of 8

    Ed Zurga/Associated Press

After a 17-year NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons, Tony Gonzalez was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

The 1997 first-round pick out of Cal is arguably the greatest tight end in NFL history.

Gonzalez was named to the Pro Bowl an amazing 14 times during his career, and he was selected to the All-Pro First Team on six occasions.

After spending the first 12 seasons of his career with the Chiefs, Gonzalez had five productive seasons with the Falcons.

He was still among the best tight ends in football in his final season at the age of 37 in 2013 when he finished with 83 receptions for 859 yards and eight touchdowns.

Gonzalez topped 1,000 receiving yards in a season four times during his career, and he caught double-digit touchdowns on three occasions.

With 1,325 receptions for 15,127 yards and 111 touchdowns, Gonzalez is one of the most prolific pass-catchers in NFL history regardless of position.

He ranks second on the all-time receptions list behind Jerry Rice, sixth in receiving yardage and eighth in receiving touchdowns.

No tight end in NFL history has more catches or receiving yardage than Gonzalez, and only Antonio Gates has more receiving touchdowns with 116.

Gonzalez was a slam-dunk choice as a first-ballot Hall of Famer, which is fitting given the former basketball player’s touchdown celebration.

Longtime Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed was chosen as a first-ballot Hall of Famer on Saturday.

Reed spent 11 of his 12 NFL seasons with the Ravens before splitting his final campaign between the Houston Texans and New York Jets.

The 2002 first-round pick out of Miami was named to the Pro Bowl nine times and the All-Pro First Team five times in his illustrious career.

He was won the 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, making him one of only five safeties in NFL history to receive that honor.

Reed completed his resume during the 2012 season when he helped lead the Ravens to a victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.

Perhaps no player in NFL history was a better playmaker on the defensive side of the ball than Reed.

His 64 career interceptions are seventh on the all-time list, and his seven pick-sixes are tied for 11th in NFL history.

He also returned a pair of fumbles and a punt for scores.

Along with linebacker Ray Lewis, Reed was the lifeblood of a Ravens defense that ranked near the top of the league for the better part of a decade.

After Lewis went into the Hall of Fame last year, it is only fitting that Reed will join him in 2019.

Former Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey is a Pro Football Hall of Famer in his first year of eligibility.

Bailey was selected with the No. 7 overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft out of Georgia by the Redskins, and he went on to have a 15-year career highlighted by major accomplishments.

After spending five seasons with the Redskins, Bailey was traded to the Broncos in a blockbuster deal that sent running back Clinton Portis to Washington.

Bailey raised his game to another level in Denver and finished his career as a 12-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro.

He amassed 908 tackles, 203 passes defended and 52 interceptions, four of which he returned for touchdowns.

Since passes defended became an official stat in 1999, no player has defended more passes than Bailey.

He also ranks 26th all-time in interceptions despite the fact that opposing quarterbacks often threw away from his blanket coverage.

While Bailey never won a Super Bowl, he did appear in 11 playoff games, and he reached Super Bowl XLVIII with the Broncos in his final season.

Bailey was the preeminent cover corner of his era, and there was little doubt about his Hall of Fame worthiness entering Saturday’s vote.

One of the New England Patriots’ all-time greatest defensive players, cornerback Ty Law, was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Law was chosen during his third stint as a Hall of Fame finalist.

He spent 15 seasons in the NFL after getting selected by New England in the first round of the 1995 NFL draft out of Michigan.

During Law’s 10 years with the Pats, he played on teams that went to four Super Bowls and won three.

Most of his success was in New England with those Super Bowl victories, four Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pro selections, but he was still productive later in his career.

Law spent two seasons with the New York Jets, two with the Kansas City Chiefs and one with the Denver Broncos.

In 2005 with the Jets, Law was named to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time in his NFL career and led the league with a career-high 10 interceptions.

Law also led the NFL with nine picks in 1998 as a member of the Pats.

In 203 career regular-season games, Law made 838 tackles, registered five sacks, forced seven fumbles, recovered five fumbles and hauled in 53 interceptions, seven of which he returned for touchdowns.

On the all-time NFL list, Law ranks 24th in interceptions and 11th in pick-sixes.

He also made six interceptions in 13 career playoff games, returning one for a touchdown against the St. Louis Rams in New England’s 20-17 win in Super Bowl XXXVI.

That iconic moment stands as Law’s greatest career highlight, but entering the Hall of Fame may soon surpass it.

One of the greatest centers in NFL history is now a Hall of Famer.

In his third year as a finalist, former Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Mawae spent 16 seasons in the NFL from 1994 to 2009, making the Pro Bowl eight times and the All-Pro First Team three times.

Seattle selected Mawae in the second round of the 1994 NFL draft out of LSU and made him an instant starter at guard before moving him to center, but Mawae experienced his greatest success in his eight seasons with the Jets.

From 1998 to 2004, Mawae started 112 straight games and was elected to the Pro Bowl in six of seven seasons.

It wasn’t until his final season in New York that injuries forced him out of the lineup, which led to his release by the Jets and subsequent signing by the Titans.

Mawae was a Pro Bowler in each of his final two seasons, and he ended his career with 241 career regular-season games played and 238 starts, which is 21st on the all-time list.

He also appeared in seven playoff games, although he never reached the Super Bowl.

Mawae was perhaps best known for his clean play, as he was called for just six false-start penalties in his career.

Saturday’s honor was a fitting one for Mawae, as he was part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-2000s Team prior to officially being named a Hall of Famer.

Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday in the contributor category.

The 74-year-old native of Wisconsin purchased the Broncos in 1984 and oversaw a remarkable run of success.

During his tenure, the Broncos have reached the Super Bowl on seven occasions and won three championships.

They have also made the playoffs 18 times since he bought the team, making the Broncos one of the most successful NFL franchises of the past three-plus decades.

In Bowlen’s time at the helm, the Broncos featured several Hall of Fame players, including quarterback John Elway, running back Terrell Davis and tight end Shannon Sharpe.

According to Zac Stevens of BSN Denver, every Broncos regular-season and playoff game has been a sellout since Bowlen bought the team.

Bowlen stepped down as Broncos CEO in 2014 as a result of Alzheimer’s disease.

He is already part of the Broncos Ring of Fame, and he received an even greater honor Saturday by being named a Hall of Famer.

Former Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt was elected as a Pro Football Hall of Famer on Saturday in the contributor category.

After breaking into the NFL as a scout with the Los Angeles Rams and then the San Francisco 49ers in the late 1950s, Brandt joined the expansion Cowboys in 1960 and helped construct multiple Super Bowl-winning teams.

The University of Wisconsin graduate served as the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel alongside general manager Tex Schramm and head coach Tom Landry.

While the Cowboys went 0-11-1 in their first season, they quickly developed into the class of the NFL.

Dallas won five NFC championships in Brandt’s time with the franchise, and it prevailed in both Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII.

The Cowboys won 13 division titles during Brandt’s tenure from 1960 to 1989, and they had a winning record for 20 consecutive seasons from 1966 to 1985.

Brandt had a hand in drafting many of the greatest players in Cowboys history, including fellow Hall of Famers Bob Lilly, Roger Staubach, Bob Hayes, Mel Renfro, Rayfield Wright, Randy White, Tony Dorsett and Michael Irvin.

After parting ways with the Cowboys in 1989, Brandt became an NFL draft analyst, and he remains a contributor on NFL.com to this day at the age of 85.

In his seventh round as a finalist, former Kansas City Chiefs safety and flanker Johnny Robinson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday as a senior nominee.

Robinson spent his entire 12-year playing career with the Dallas Texans/Chiefs franchise from 1960 to 1971.

The Texans selected Robinson in the first round of the 1960 AFL draft after he starred at LSU as a running back.

Robinson spent his first two AFL seasons as a flanker (or wide receiver), totaling 658 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, as well as 76 receptions for 1,212 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

He then moved to safety in 1962, which was the Texans’ final year in existence before becoming the Kansas City Chiefs.

In his nine years in Kansas City, Robinson was a six-time AFL All-Star and one-time Pro Bowler, as well as a five-time All-AFL First Team selection and one-time All-Pro First-Teamer.

Robinson also won three AFL titles during his career, and he helped lead the Chiefs to a win in Super Bowl IV over the Minnesota Vikings.

The Louisiana native had 57 interceptions in 164 career regular-season games, ranking him 13th on the all-time list.

Robinson led the league in interceptions twice with 10 in both 1966 and 1970.

While Robinson’s Hall of Fame induction may have taken longer than expected, his status as one of the AFL’s top defensive players undoubtedly makes him worthy.
