Dutch boxing hero who fought Ali still riding punches in Bulgaria

Former Dutch boxing champion Rudi Lubbers, who lost to Muhammad Ali on points in a 12-round heavyweight fight in Jakarta four and a half decades ago, is back on his feet after taking one of the heaviest punches of his life.

The 73-year-old and his partner Ria have been living in poverty in southeastern Bulgaria for the last two months, only to receive help after his story grabbed huge attention in the Netherlands following a TV documentary shown last Sunday.

They survived the freezing conditions in a broken-down van, lacking electricity, water and sanitary facilities, while looking after stray dogs.

Ria’s health suddenly deteriorated to the point she was rushed to hospital on Friday in critical condition.

Lubbers said her condition had improved slightly but she would remain in hospital for a few more days at least.

“The most important [thing] now is that my girlfriend returns in good condition and can see the dogs again,” Lubbers told Reuters news agency just outside the dilapidated van in the countryside near the village of Kosharitsa.

Lubbers, who represented the Netherlands at the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games before turning professional in 1970, said his fight with former world champion Ali, for which he earned $125,000, made him mentally stronger.

“I’ve learned from the fight, so I could survive here,” he said, adding that he and Ria had received food and clothes from local people as well as Bulgarian mastika, a strong anise-flavoured drink, to keep them warm in the freeze.

Many in the Netherlands were shocked to see their boxing hero in such a desperate situation to the point that more than 12,500 euro were collected following the launch a crowd-funding campaign.

Rudi’s son Marco, who hasn’t been in touch with his dad for two years, arrived in Bulgaria after watching the documentary while Dutch people, living in the Balkan country, arranged a temporary shelter for the dogs.

Lubbers worked at funfairs with Ria for several years after retiring, but became homeless after she was declared bankrupt in 1999.

They lived then in Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Portugal before arriving in Bulgaria a few years ago.

Lubbers said he had remained friends with Ali who fought him in 1973 as he prepared for a rematch with his great rival Joe Frazier.

“Years after the fight, he [Ali] came to Holland,” said Lubbers who revealed that Ali had told him something he would remember forever.

“Ali told me: ‘Rudi, you’re the only white man from whom I ever learned something’.”

Lubbers, never beaten by a Dutch opponent during his career, said he still watched boxing but was disappointed by modern techniques.

“I love boxing but boxing has changed,” said Lubbers, who has suffered from asthma all his life. “It’s more fighting now.”

In Pictures: Chinese communities celebrate Lunar New Year

The Chinese Lunar New Year is being celebrated around the world with lanterns, performances, decorations and food.

People are bidding farewell to the year of the dog in the 12-year Chinese astrological cycle and welcoming the year of the pig with hopes of happiness and fortune.

On new year’s eve, members of the Chinese communities gathered for reunion dinners, gave red packets of pocket money to children and lit firecrackers at midnight.

Earlier on Tuesday, the first day of the year of the pig, hundreds lined up outside famous temples to burn the first joss sticks of the year, expecting it to bring them good luck.

Ornaments were readied, kiosks set up, and traditional dragon dancers leapt in the air.

The colour red dominated the celebrations – on lanterns, clothes and signs. In homes and shops, pig dolls were displayed for the festival, which is also celebrated in Vietnam and by ethnic Chinese communities across Asia.

Seth Meyers slams Virginia governor’s response to racist yearbook photo

By Shannon Connellan

After a racist photo on his 1984 yearbook page surfaced on Friday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam was called on to resign. So, he held a press conference to prove he’s not a racist. It didn’t go well.

It was almost too easy for Seth Meyers, who took “A Closer Look” at the controversy on Monday, and in particular, the governor’s backtracking on whether the image of a man wearing blackface, and another wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood, actually featured him.Ā

After apologising for being in the photo, Northam later changed his story, claiming he knew he wasn’t in it. Why? He pointed to another time he wore blackface, when he performed a Michael Jackson routine in a dance contest. Really.

“He’s actually arguing that it couldn’t have been him in blackface because there was a different time he wore blackface,” said Meyers. “It’s not a defense, that’s a confession. Try that next time a cop pulls you over: ‘Officer, I’m totally sober. Usually when I drive drunk I swerve a lot more.’”

For the most part, Meyers joked about Northam’s defence, but put the reality of the situation quite simply.

“Even if it’s not you in the photo, admitting that you did wear blackface at a different event is also disqualifying,” he said. “It’s not just an embarrassing story, it’s racist and dehumanising.”

Emissions threaten to melt two-thirds of Himalayan glaciers

Two-thirds of Himalayan glaciers – the world’s “Third Pole” – could melt by 2100 if global emissions are not sharply reduced, scientists have warned in a major new study.

Even if the most ambitious Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is achieved, one-third of the glaciers would disappear, according to the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment, which was released on Monday.

Glaciers in the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region are a critical water source for some 250 million people in the mountains, as well as to 1.65 billion others in the river valleys below, the 650-page report said.

The glaciers feed 10 of the world’s most important river systems, including the Ganges, Indus, Yellow, Mekong and Irrawaddy. They also, directly or indirectly, supply billions of people with food, energy, clean air and income.

If the ice melts, the consequences could include worsened air pollution to more extreme weather.

Lower pre-monsoon river flows will disrupt urban water systems and food and energy production, the study warned.

NASA’s new satellite measures ice levels on Earth

‘Bare rocks’

Five years in the making, the report was published by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal, one of eight countries on the front line.

More than 350 researchers and policy experts, 185 organisations, 210 authors, 20 editors and 125 external reviewers contributed to its completion.

“Global warming is on track to transform the frigid, glacier-covered mountain peaks … cutting across eight countries to bare rocks in a little less than a century,” Philippus Wester, of ICIMOD, said in a statement.

“This is the climate crisis you haven’t heard of.”Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

The 2015 Paris Agreement vowed to cap global warming “well below” two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In December, the UN climate forum agreed on a common approach to implement the accord, but failed to deliver fresh commitments to reduce planet-warming greenhouse gases.

Voluntary pledges currently in place would see Earth heat up by more than 3C, a recipe for widespread human misery, say scientists.

The new report notes that a 1.5C increase in global temperatures would mean a rise of at least 2.1C in the Himalayas region. If emissions continue unabated, the roof of the world would warm by an unlivable 5C.

“This is a landmark piece of work,” said Jemma Wadham, a professor of glaciology at the University of Bristol in England, who did not contribute to the report.

“The discovery that a third of the Himalayan glaciers could disappear signals potentially disastrous consequences for river flows, pollution and managing natural hazards associated with extreme events for more than one billion people.”

Pollution

The Himalayan glaciers, which formed some 70m years ago, are highly sensitive to changing temperatures. Since the 1970s, they have thinned and retreated, and the area covered by snow and snowfall has shrunk, raising concerns that glacial lakes could burst and flood.

Satellite data shows that numbers of such lakes in the region grew to 4,260 in a decade from 3,350 in 1990.

“Emerging hazards – in particular glacial lake development and increasingly unstable rock and ice faces — will become a major concern,” said Duncan Quincey, an associate professor at the University of Leeds school of geography.

Delhi choked with toxic smog as air quality worsens

Air pollution from the Indo-Gangetic Plains – one of the world’s most polluted regions – also deposits black carbon and dust on the glaciers, hastening melting and changing monsoon circulation, the ICIMOD study said.

The region would require up to $4.6bn per year by 2030 to adapt to climate change, rising to as much as $7.8 billion per year by 2050, according to an estimate in the report.

“Without the ice reserve in the mountains to top up the rivers through the melt season, droughts will be harsher on those living downstream,” noted Hamish Pritchard, an expert on ice dynamics at the British Antarctic Survey, commenting on the findings.Ā

Lakers Rumors: Pelicans Want to Keep Anthony Davis Past Trade Deadline

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - JANUARY 30: Injured Anthony Davis #23 of the New Orleans Pelicans reacts during the first half against the Denver Nuggets at the Smoothie King Center on January 30, 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana. In pursuit of New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers have to “overcome significant support within the Pelicans organization” to keep Davis through the deadline, according to ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com offered more insight into the Lakers’ perspective.

Ramona Shelburne @ramonashelburne

Yes. So far, the Lakers have felt conversations with New Orleans have been one-sided and they are growing increasingly pessimistic about the Pelicans willingness to do a deal with them. https://t.co/vbMEcLTHwY

Fletcher Mackel of WDSU in New Orleans reported the Pelicans are holding off on a Davis trade now in order to wait until this summer, when the Boston Celtics can enter the fray. New Orleans is reportedly looking to make Jayson Tatum the centerpiece of the deal, not one of the Lakers’ young stars.

According to the Los Angeles TimesTania Ganguli and Broderick Turner, the Lakers offered Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson, Michael Beasley and two first-round picks to the Pelicans. Los Angeles was also prepared to take on Solomon Hill, who’s owed almost $12.8 million next year.

Some might argue Pelicans general manager Dell Demps should take the offer the Lakers put forward, but it makes little sense to rush into a deal now.

New Orleans officially confirmed Davis’ trade request on Jan. 28, 10 days before the trade deadline expires. That gave potential suitors little time to decide not only whether they wanted to make a move for Davis but also what they’d be willing to give up in order to get him.

By waiting until the summer, the Pelicans will have more time to evaluate the trade landscape.

The fact that Davis could only be a one-year rental will turn off some teams, but all it takes is one desperate general manager to step up and make a big play for the six-time All-Star. Few expected Paul George to land with the Oklahoma City Thunder or Kawhi Leonard to end up on the Toronto Raptors when it became clear they were leaving their old teams.

Just as important, the Pelicans will know the order of the 2019 NBA draft lottery if they put a Davis trade on the back burner until the offseason.

For instance, the New York Knicks own the NBA’s worst record (10-42) but have just a 14.0 percent chance of getting the No. 1 overall pick, per Tankathon. There’s a 47.9 percent chance of New York falling out of the top four altogether.

It’s clear Davis wants out, so dragging things out wouldn’t be ideal for anyone involved. However, going that route is the Pelicans’ best option in a difficult situation.

It’s been quite the year for “The Queen of Shitty Robots,” Simone Giertz.

The diagnosis and surgery of a non-cancerous brain tumor, and now the return of it, hasn’t made things the easiest for the YouTube star.

SEE ALSO: Simone Giertz didn’t let brain surgery stop her. What’s next?

While some would want to see the back of their removed tumor, Giertz managed to get a photo of it… in Antarctica.Ā

After sending it far, far away, Giertz posted the image of the tumor on Twitter, complete with ice shelves in the background.Ā

The kind act was the result of Ariel Waldman, who went to the continent to study tardigrades, a near-microscopic water dwelling animal found there.

Waldman added on Twitter that she took the tumor down to Antarctica “a couple months ago,” in what is probably the coolest favor ever.Ā

Also @arielwaldman deserves all the high fives for doing me this very awkward favor. She went there to study tardigrades and is well worth a follow.

Celtics Trade Rumors: Pelicans Eyeing Jayson Tatum in Summer Anthony Davis Deal

Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum reacts after making a three-pointer during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the Philadelphia 76ers in Boston, Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018. (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)

Michael Dwyer/Associated Press

New Orleans Pelicans general manager Dell Demps and special adviser Danny Ferry remain unmoved by the Los Angeles Lakers‘ attempts to acquire Anthony Davis, according toĀ Fletcher Mackel of WDSU in New Orleans.

Mackel reported the belief in New Orleans’ front office is the team can land Jayson Tatum in a trade with the Boston Celtics.

TheĀ Los Angeles TimesĀ TaniaĀ GanguliĀ and Broderick TurnerĀ reported earlier Monday the Lakers were prepared to offerĀ Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson, Michael Beasley and two first-round picks for Davis and Pelicans veteran Solomon Hill.

The Lakers are “growing increasingly pessimistic” they can complete a deal before the deadline, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

The Celtics can’t make a trade for Davis until July 1 because ofĀ league rulesĀ regarding players who signed rookie extensions under the “Rose Rule.” Boston already acquired Kyrie Irving, which prevents the team from adding another player on a rookie max deal.

That gives the Pelicans an incentive to wait out Davis’Ā trade request.

When looking at the most realistic outcomes for New Orleans, Tatum is probably the best asset it could land.Ā The 20-year-old is averaging 16.1 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 37.3 percent from beyond the arc, and those numbers are somewhat underwhelming after his impressive rookie season.

Tatum could be the face of the Pelicans’ new era.

The situation may not be so straightforward, though.

WojnarowskiĀ reported Davis wouldn’t intend on signing a long-term deal with the Celtics were the Pelicans to trade him to Boston. He can opt out after the 2019-20 season.

Yahoo Sports’Ā Chris HaynesĀ brought up the “growing belief of uncertainty” about Kyrie Irving’s future with the Celtics, which came before Irving deflected questions about his impending free agency this summer.

Boston may not feel comfortable giving up Tatum for Davis without a firm assurance Davis will re-sign, and Davis might want to see what Irving decides before he commits to the Celtics beyond 2020.

Were the Celtics to effectively fall out of the Davis sweepstakes, the Pelicans would almost certainly lose some leverage, thus allowing the Lakers to amend the offer they’ve already put forward.

UN says North Korea trying to protect nuclear, missile capability

North Korea has maintained its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and is looking for ways to ensure those capabilities cannot be destroyed by any military strikes, according to a confidential report by United Nations sanctions monitors.

The report to a 15-member UN Security Council sanctions committee, seen by Reuters news agency on Monday, comes ahead of a second planned summit between US PresidentĀ Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this month.

The first meeting between Kim and Trump last June in Singapore produced a vaguely worded document in which the North Korean leader pledged to work towards “the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula”.Ā

While Trump has hailed “tremendous progress” in his dealings with North Korea, the UN report found that Pyongyang “is using civilian facilities, including airports, for ballistic missile assembly and testing with the goal of effectively preventing ‘decapitation’ strikes on a smaller number of identified nuclear and missile assembly and manufacturing site”.

The report said it “found evidence of a consistent trend on the part of the DPRK to disperse its assembly, storage and testing locations”, using the abbreviation for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Trump lashes out at US spy chiefs over Iran, North Korea and ISIL

The North Korean mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the 317-page UN report, which was submitted to Security Council members on Friday.

In his annualĀ New Year’s addressĀ last month, Kim renewed his commitment to denuclearisation but warned that he may have no option but to seek an alternative course if theĀ United StatesĀ does not take corresponding measures and maintains sanctions.

‘Sanctions ineffective’

The UN Security Council has tightened sanctions on North Korea since 2006 in a bid to choke funding for the country’s nuclear weapons programmes, banning exports including coal, iron, lead, textiles and seafood, as well as capping imports of crude oil and refined petroleum products.

“The country continues to defy Security Council resolutions through a massive increase in illegal ship-to-ship transfers of petroleum products and coal,” the sanctions monitors found. “These violations render the latest UN sanctions ineffective.”

The monitors said they had evidence of one unprecedented prohibited petroleum product transfer of more than 57,600 barrels, worth more than $5.7m.

They said the case highlighted “new sanctions evasion techniques that defeated the due diligence efforts of the region’s leading commodity trader, as well as the US and Singaporean banks that facilitated the fuel payments and a leading UK insurer that provided protection and indemnity cover to one of the vessels involved”.

Gordon Chang, a regional analyst and author of Nuclear Showdown: North Korea takes on the world, said the US needed to do more to enforce sanctions.

Trump, Kim to hold second summit near February end: White House

“The real story here is not that the North Koreans are violating sanctions, or continuing building up their arsenal,” Chang told Al Jazeera.

“The real surprise here is that the United States is not enforcing sanctions vigorously. The US has since the middle of May last year basically allowed the North Koreans – and the Russians, and the Chinese, and the South Koreans – to violate sanctions and so, of course, Kim Jong Un feels ‘why should I give up my missiles and my nukes.’”

The report accused North Korea of violating a UN arms embargo and attempting “to sell a wide range of military equipment to armed groups and governments in the Middle East and Africa”, as well as small arms and light weapons to Libya, Sudan and the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The UN monitors also noted “a trend in the DPRK’s evasion of financial sanctions using cyber attacks to illegally force the transfer of funds from financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges”.

North Korea is subject to a ban on luxury goods and the monitors said they are investigating the public appearance of a relatively new Rolls-Royce Phantom in Pyongyang on October 7 last year. The car usually sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Russia and China suggested the Security Council discuss easing sanctions after Trump and Kim met for the first time. But the US and other council members have said there must be strict enforcement of sanctions until Pyongyang acts.

Riverdale’s Josie McCoy Might Finally Get Her Spin-Off After All

The CW Network

Sounds like Josie McCoy’s future is a lot bigger than small-town Riverdale! According to new reports, Ashleigh Murray will reprise her role as a lead in the CW’s Katy Keene pilot.

The Riverdale spin-off will have us flash forward to a now 20-something Josie, who moves to New York City to embark upon the next stage in her music career. While there, she meets new friends, enters new relationships (sorry, Archosie shippers!), and sees her star rise.

Presumably, one of Josie’s new friends will be Katy Keene herself, a budding fashion legend chasing her dreams in the big city. It’s a musical dramedy — perfect for Josie — about four friends trying to make their way in fashion, music, and theater.

The new series from creator and executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has been picked up to pilot, which means the first episode will definitely be filmed, but nothing is certain beyond that. However, Aguirre-Sacasa does have a pretty good track record thus far, having already successfully launched one Archie Comics spin-off with Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, so it’s OK to feel good about this one finding its way to the small screen.

But there is one downside to Katy Keene‘s success: If it is picked up to series, it means Murray will be leaving Riverdale. (Again, sorry, Archosie fans!)

Although CW president Mark Pedowitz previously told reporters there will not be a crossover episode to introduce Katy Keene due to the time jump, he did offer one beacon of hope that the two worlds may collide later on, saying, “Any of the Riverdale characters who come to Katy Keene will be older.”

Might we suggest a 10-year Pussycats reunion show?
