As more Venezuelans flee, the crisis pushes deeper into Colombia

Pamplona, Colombia – Up to 50 Venezuelans sleep in what used to be 55-year-old Marta Duke’s dining room every night. Forty sleep in her former living room; more in what was once her son’s bedroom.

Scores more sleep at the neighbour’s house, and 200 more sleep outside in this chilly mountain town 75km from the Venezuelan border.

“In the new year, the quantity has exploded,” said Duke, rubbing her tired eyes in the kitchen of her house-turned-migrant shelter. “I’m worried.”

Aid workers and volunteers throughout the border zone agree that the number of Venezuelans hiking into Colombia has surged in recent weeks.

As the new arrivals continue to mount, the humanitarian crisis zone once confined to the Venezuelan border is pushing deeper into Colombia.

‘No one expected this’

Late last year, places like Pamplona saw a steady trickle of Venezuelans walking through. Now, hundreds of people camp in the streets each night. The next day, they leave and more arrive.

“I don’t think anyone expected it to be like this,” said Eric Huxley, Colombia country director for the aid group Samaritan’s Purse, who has lived near the Venezuelan border since September.

No one knows exactly how Venezuelans are arriving. Figures from Colombia’s migration authority do not add up to the spike reported by shelters throughout the zone, suggesting more people are using routes between official ports of entry and arriving undocumented.

One shelter counted about 1,200 migrants passing through in one day this month, nearly twice what they counted weekly in early December. Duke also estimated that far more than 1,000 Venezuelans pass by her home each day, with almost 300 sleeping there each night.

Duke, a self-described social activist, opened her doors to the migrants one year ago, when she started to notice groups building fires to cook and camp at the entrance to Pamplona. Up to 10 people used to sleep in her house back then. Now, she runs her shelter full time while her husband works as an electrical repairman.

Every day she makes a soup with potatoes, rice, herbs and sometimes, bones.

“As long as God gives me the strength and energy to do this, I will,” she said, “It’s just sad to see so many people, children, hungry.”

Families flee

No one knows exactly why the numbers of arriving migrants have jumped in the New Year. Venezuelans seldom say it has much to do with the fresh political upheaval at home. Many countries including the United States have recognised opposition leader, Juan Guaido, as the nation’s interim president, casting uncertainty on the future of the government of President Nicolas Maduro, who still enjoys the support of the highest ranks of Venezuela‘s military, Turkey, Russia and China.

The border area is set to become the next front line of the crisis, with the US reportedly planning to send food and medical supplies to Cucuta, the main Colombian-Venezuelan border crossing, where it will stay until it is allowed into the country. Maduro maintains that the US, along with other international powers, of trying to overthrow the country’s “legitimate government”.

Many migrants say they’re only marginally aware of the upheaval at home, as events are not covered by state TV broadcasters and the people remain more focused on daily survival.

Many say the spike in migration is related to the Christmas holiday. After an austere season of sentimental family time, many concluded they were ready to leave home behind.

“We practically didn’t have a Christmas this year,” said Marena Castillo, lamenting the lack of their traditional dinner. “I couldn’t get my children anything. After that, I knew it was time to go.”

Also contributing to the spike: more migrants are bringing their families.

One of them is Eliomal Flores, who is making his second trip across Colombia. The first was in May of last year. He left behind his wife and two kids in Valencia to try and earn some money and find some stability before bringing them along.

He walked and hitchhiked alone to Bogota, where he paid about three dollars a night to sleep on a crowded floor with about 20 other Venezuelans. By day he sold candies on the street. After six months he was able to save about 100,000 Colombian pesos, about $32.

On December 18, he set out for home and spent some of what he had saved on Christmas for his children. Then, in early January, the family together locked up their house and walked away, unsure they would ever return.

Flores said he would save the money for emergency situations. So far, the family has been able to eat only donated food.

“The Colombians have been very generous with us,” he said.

More than three million people have fled Venezuela, and more than a million of them have settled in Colombia, a number which Colombian officials estimate could quadruple in the year to come.

Grassroots response

All along this part of the migration route, locals have taken it upon themselves to mount a grassroots humanitarian response.

One of them is Alonso Cardazo, 46, who farms peaches. Cardazo often drives his Toyota truck down the highway leading away from the border, stopping at each group of walking Venezuelans he found to distribute tamales, a typical Colombian food of rice and chicken cooked in a banana leaf.

He said he hands out between 30 and 40 tamales, which he buys at a shop in his local town, about three times a week. Typically it takes less than half an hour to distribute everything he has.

“I have no reason not to help them,” he said, sitting in his truck. “Just look. They need help.”

Others, like Duke in Pamplona, have opened their homes to migrants and refugees. Douglas Cabeza, 52, left his work as a shoe repairman three months ago to host Venezuelans full time.

When they outgrew his living room, he added a loft to his house. Now, he is building a set of shacks up the mountain from his home to shelter more people.

“Since about the third of January, a very strong flow has begun,” he said, standing in a loft surrounded by sleeping groups of women and children. “I don’t know how much longer this can last. So many people have left. How many more can remain?”

Truck drivers who pick up Venezuelans also provide some of the most crucial aid.

One hour in a car or truck can account for up to 15 hours on foot, said Victor Fernandez, coordinator for the Red Cross in Pamplona. Each day, he works at a small outpost set up for Venezuelans as they hike out of town and into the high mountains.

“The flow of children has increased a lot,” he said, as many parents have returned to bring back their families.

Most are able to catch rides by this point, but still about 300 pass through the checkpoint each day. Fernandez said about 45 percent of them carry legal documentation, and only five percent have stamped passports, meaning they used official border crossings.

He gives an orientation to a small crowd, explaining to them where to stop their hikes to avoid nightfall catching the migrants in the highlands, where temperatures can near freezing. And he hands out maps of the route, showing 47 hours by foot to the next big city, Bucaramanga. The Ecuadorian border, where many were headed, lay about a 15-day walk ahead.

Algeni Garcia said his sandals fell apart on the four-day walk to Pamplona [Dylan Baddour/Al Jazeera]

Faced with this news, many Venezuelans opt to stay put and hope to catch a ride, but few trucks have space by this point.

Algeni Garcia, who recently left Venezuela with his wife and two children, rested in the gravel parking lot near the Red Cross checkpoint. Holding his one-year-old daughter, he studied the walking map, dismayed by what he learned in the recent orientation.

“Mom says we can’t walk,” his nine-year-old son told him.

“Go tell her we have to walk,” he said, frustration ringing in his voice. “There is no future here.”

A cat named ‘Peepee’ runs his own Twitter account, and it’s even cuter than you’d think

With the rise and fall of the cat meme economy, we look to online cat personalities to fill the cuteness void in our hearts. But one talkative feline has gone beyond just looking adorable to steal our attention.

Giving an inside look at the daily thoughts of a house cat, Twitter account @peepeeplayhouse shows the life of Peepee. And yes, that is his real name.

iave been Cote again . my dade said “Peepee You Nevre Wake Up Excapt Fore Treat’s”. i saide No thatse not true .then My dad toke fotage bahind my Back’ of me sleaping thru a cackafony and then Wakeing up excited fore treat’s. . pic.twitter.com/XbebHHcKJI

Peepee is 8-years-old (or as he says, “Ate year’s oald“), loves drinking water that isn’t his, and is a big fan of receiving pats. Sounds pretty typical, right? But what makes this Twitter so great is that it isn’t from the perspective of a human or a cat parent documenting these tales — it’s Peepee’s own account— and he wants his thoughts to be heard.

This charming collection of daily anecdotes is displayed well in the viral tweet below. Describing his true nature as a cat, many people found this an extremely relatable mood.

He also went on to say that he was just having a lot of fun blogging on his own, and he hopes that everyone just has a good time on his page.

Indeed, a wholesome community has assembled to compliment and shower Peepee with affection. His page is filled with everything from fan art, to theme songs honoring his adorable legacy.

@peepeeplayhouse – hi peepee. I recorded that lil song I made for you with a full band. It’s a little faster that the first one. I hope you don’t mind that I used one of your beautiful pics for the video. Hope you like! pic.twitter.com/5HNxr8xaTx

— almost dr. jordan (@thewholeboy) January 29, 2019

Peepee is definitely not the first animal online to bridge the communication gap with a wide human audience — other accounts such as @ProBirdRights and @dog_feelings seek to capture our innate need to understand our pets.

Internet lexicon surrounding pets has interestingly evolved into two major categories — how we talk about pets and how the pets themselves “talk.” This is well documented in an NPR article about the origins of doggolino, the cutesy language used to refer to pets, reflects how we talk to our pets IRL.

But the rise in animal memes gives a voice to our animal companions. We impart our cutesy language onto them, and also reflect our pets’ limited worldview. Peepee speaks to us in the same loving way that we ourselves would speak to him, and we hope that this is the way our pets actually see us.

And with so many cats on the internet, that’s what makes Peepee’s playhouse a gem all its own. This little fellow fights for belly pats and trans rights. What a true icon.

Trump offers private SOTU preview to close allies

Donald Trump

State of the Union 2019

The gathering was called to detail the main themes of Tuesday’s speech for roughly 20 Republicans close to the administration.

In the middle of a State of the Union briefing for the White House’s closest allies Monday night, a fired up Donald Trump walked in.

The president appeared eager to give the annual speech Tuesday night in the House of Representatives, an occasion he has always enjoyed given its history and pomp and circumstance, said two people briefed on the meeting. After acknowledging several supporters in the room, Trump went on at length about Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s recent comments about late-term abortions and nonviable babies born with fatal abnormalities, characterizing them as a description of murder.

Story Continued Below

The gathering was called so acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney could detail the main themes of Tuesday’s speech to roughly 20 Republicans close to the administration, including former campaign officials like Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie. At the session, Mulvaney outlined the speech’s main themes while reminding attendees the draft was still influx and could change in the hours leading up to the speech.

A hand-out from the meeting obtained by POLITICO said the speech will focus on “choosing greatness” and will zero in the themes of immigration, American workers, healthcare, the rising cost of prescription drugs and national security.

Foreign affairs will also feature prominently in the address, according to two sources briefed on the speech. Trump intends to highlight what he sees as his accomplishments, including the recent uptick in military spending, his push to revise NATO, his ongoing trade negotiations with China and his diplomacy with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, with whom he is expected to meet in late February.

Domestically, the speech is expected to touch on the need for greater infrastructure spending. Trump is likely to mention the expanding 5G wireless network — the next iteration of how cellphones will communicate — as well as additional oil pipelines being built. The administration’s economic record will also receive mention, with Trump likely to cite a low unemployment rate and the White House efforts to roll back and reduce government regulations.

While senior administration officials have insisted in recent days that the speech will call for bipartisanship and unity, the president also intends to use his bully pulpit to tout the differences between the two parties at a time when some Democrats are pulling the party left and calling for higher taxes and a more expansive Medicare program.

“The president will talk about the choice voters have. He is offering solutions, while the opposition, the Democrats, is basically offering socialism,” said one source briefed on the speech.

On Tuesday, Trump will also meet with television anchors at the White House for an off-the-record meeting to preview his speech, according to two White House officials.

Andrew Restuccia contributed reporting.

LaVar Ball Rips ‘Worst Coach’ Luke Walton, Anthony Davis as He Eyes Lonzo Trade

Ben Margot/Associated Press

LaVar Ball isn’t happy with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In the wake of Lonzo Ball’s name being floated in Anthony Davis trade rumors, LaVar Ball appeared on the Doug & Wolf radio show in Arizona and ripped Lakers head coach Luke Walton:

“Luke Walton was the worst coach he ever had. It was Magic [Johnson] who said he was going to be the dang face of the franchise. But Magic ain’t doing no coaching. And the only person to kill Lonzo is the coach pulling him out and not having no confidence in him. Everyone who’s had confidence in Lonzo just let him go and let him win. That’s what he does. He wins. Luke Walton turned him into a loser. A loser’s mentality is like, ‘Oh, he’s young, he’ll get it.’ Instead of just letting him go out there and do what he does.”

Davis didn’t escape Ball’s wrath.

“AD is good!” Ball said. “But he’s not a winner. How many playoff games has he won? He’s been in the league a long time, there’s a difference between players and winners.”

Dems revive push to shield Mueller from firing and make his final report public

Mitch McConnell

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s opposition to the protect-Mueller effort is well documented; but last week, McConnell said that the Mueller report “ought to be as fully open and transparent, whatever the recommendation, as possible.” | Andrew Harnik/AP Photo

Congress

There’s growing Republican support for making Mueller’s findings public.

House Democrats plan to move quickly to protect special counsel Robert Mueller and ensure his findings are made public, in their first move since taking power to confront the White House over the Russia investigation.

Still undetermined, however, is whether Democrats will pass a combined package, or one measure to prevent President Donald Trump from firing Mueller and another to ensure the release of his final report, according to multiple lawmakers and aides.

Story Continued Below

“Which is the best way [to shield Mueller] — I don’t know,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said in a recent interview.

Among the committee’s first orders of business expected later this month, Nadler said, will be legislation to shield Mueller from unjust termination, an effort that previously went nowhere in the GOP-controlled House and was repeatedly blocked by Senate Republicans. Senate Majority Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has long criticized the proposal as a futile, partisan hit-job against the president.

But there is growing Republican support for making Mueller’s findings public after Trump declined to commit to doing so over the weekend — and the House will try to force the Senate’s hand.

“I hope they can pass it in the Senate. I don’t know if they can. Sen. McConnell has not been terribly accommodating to such efforts,” said Nadler, whose committee has jurisdiction over the issue.

Trump has been dogged since the start of the Mueller probe in May 2017 with questions about whether he’d try to fire the special counsel. The president and his lawyers have repeatedly denied any interest in making such a politically explosive move, though a person familiar with the issue told POLITICO that Trump did order Mueller’s firing just a month into the probe and only backed down after his White House counsel at the time threatened to quit.

McConnell’s opposition to the protect-Mueller effort is well documented; but last week, when asked about a new Senate bill aiming to guarantee a public disclosure of Mueller’s findings, McConnell said that the Mueller report “ought to be as fully open and transparent, whatever the recommendation, as possible.”

Those comments left Democrats hopeful that McConnell might be amenable to the idea as long as it isn’t tied to the legislation to protect Mueller’s job from a president who continues to rail against a “witch hunt” that has ensnared some of his former close associates.

For that reason, Nadler suggested the Judiciary Committee could pass the two measures separately in the lower chamber, making it more likely that their ultimate goal of a public Mueller report would be achieved. Trump would still have to sign such legislation, but passage alone would send an important signal from Congress, proponents argue.

“The report has to be public,” Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), a member of the Intelligence Committee, said on CNN, noting that Republicans have supported the public release of the panel’s witness interview transcripts.

“The crux, the heart of the report and the conclusions and the facts and circumstances on which it’s based have to be public so that the public can review it and we have faith in our electoral system,” Turner added. “The public has got to have confidence that this investigation was unimpeded, went to its conclusion.”

Democrats have signaled an urgency to act on the effort as of late, with Nadler and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) threatening to issue subpoenas for the information if it’s shielded from them or subjected to political interference within the Justice Department.

On Sunday, Trump would not promise to make the final report public, telling CBS News: “I don’t know. It depends. I have no idea what it’s going to say.”

Mueller, now in his 20thmonth on the job, is under no deadline to finish his work. When he does wrap up, he’s required under Justice Department rules only to give the attorney general a confidential report detailing who he prosecuted and who he declined to prosecute. It’s then up to the attorney general to decide what to publicly release. Separately, the attorney general is also required to tell Congress of any instances where DOJ leaders rejected Mueller on any major proposed decisions.

During his confirmation hearings last month, William Barr, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, did not commit to a full public disclosure. Meanwhile, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker declared last week that the Mueller probe was “close to being completed,” but Democrats have largely dismissed that claim.

Nadler is leaving all options on the table to ensure that Mueller’s findings become public, and he told POLITICO he would issue a subpoena to the Justice Department if the attorney general moves to block a full disclosure. He also indicated he would invite Mueller himself to testify before the committee if a legislative effort doesn’t materialize. But he prefers legislation because a subpoena challenge could lag in federal court for months.

While House Democrats will be able to pass their Mueller-protection efforts without GOP support, buy-in from Senate Republicans is crucial. Last week, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduced legislation that would allow Congress to review Mueller’s final report, including the evidence contained in it. The bill would also require a public disclosure of the report, with proper redactions to protect the FBI’s sources and methods. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Tex.) has introduced an identical measure in the House.

“The American people paid for that report. They deserve to know everything that’s in it,” Blumenthal said, adding that he still had concerns about Barr as attorney general. “This issue is a defining and definitive test of the larger question which is will he be the people’s lawyer or the president’s lawyer.”

While House Republican leaders have publicly expressed support for publicizing Mueller’s findings, it’s unclear if a legislative effort will move forward in the Senate, with some Republicans deferring to Barr and the president.

“You don’t know what’s in it,” Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said of the final report. “It involves an investigation of one of our biggest adversaries, Russia, and there could well be classified information that can’t be revealed, and so I’m sympathetic to why Barr and the president have not said unequivocally it’s going to be public.”

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who is a co-sponsor of the special counsel protection bill and is up for re-election in 2020, said he is confident Barr will release as much information as he can.

“There’s some statutory limitations. A lot of people try to read it as he was equivocating [at his confirmation hearings] but I think he was saying exactly what he had to say legally,” Tillis said. “He’s going to release as much as possible. I don’t anticipate a lot of redaction and I want it all out. I think that’s the easiest way to end the speculation and move on.”

While the fate of the Grassley-Blumenthal bill is unclear, Republican senators have echoed McConnell, saying they support transparency.

“I think after this long investigation has gone on that the American people deserve to know what the findings are of Mr. Mueller,” said Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). “I believe the report should be released.”

Burgess Everett and Darren Samuelsohn contributed reporting.
