Music-streaming king Spotify sees a future in podcasts.

The company announced on Wednesday that it has made two huge acquisitions that firmly plant Spotify in the podcasting business. The music-streaming giant has bought Gimlet Media Inc., a popular podcast producer, and Anchor, a platform that helps creators produce and publish their podcasts.

According to Recode, Spotify is paying around $230 million for Gimlet. Recode first reported that Spotify and Gimlet were in talks last week. It’s currently unknown how much Spotify spent on Anchor.

Recode points out that the acquisition puts Spotify in the content creation business for the first time — something the company hasn’t done in its almost 11 years in the music industry.

Spotify isn’t finished with podcast-related acquisitions either. The company is looking to spend up to $500 million this year to bolster its podcasting business.

The amount Spotify is looking to spend on podcast companies is greater than a year of advertising revenue for the entire podcasting market.

In a blog post, Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek shared his thoughts on the company’s latest moves into podcasting. He boasts that with its 200 million users, the music streaming service is already the second biggest podcasting platform after Apple iTunes. Ek says that he fully expects 20 percent of all Spotify listening to be non-music related content eventually.

Ek also touches upon some thoughts that help explain just why Spotify paid as much as it did for the acquisitions.

“Video is about a trillion dollar market. And the music and radio industry is worth around a hundred billion dollars,” Ek explains. “I always come back to the same question: Are our eyes really worth 10 times more than our ears? I firmly believe this is not the case.”

“With the world focused on trying to reduce screen time, it opens up a massive audio opportunity,” writes Ek.

Spotify has only been in the podcasting business for about two years, when it first rolled out podcasts onto its already very popular music streaming service. It was reported back in 2017 that the company was talking with podcast producers, like Gimlet, in order to bring original podcast content to its platform. The service opened up to all podcasts just this past October.

Gimlet is responsible for producing and publishing some of the most popular podcasts on the internet like Reply All, StartUp, and Crimetown. The podcast producer found even another medium for podcasting success when it turned one of its shows into the popular Amazon series, Homecoming

In its own acquisition announcement, the podcast production and hosting platform, Anchor, stated that its platform is currently powering more than 40 percent of all new podcasts. (Disclaimer: The author of this piece was briefly contracted in 2017 to host a show for Anchor.)

For a medium on the rise, podcasting has been largely ignored as a business. Podcasters have complained that even Apple largely ignores podcasts when compared to its other services. It seems like Spotify may have found an opportunity.

US weapons sold to allies but end up with enemies

Amnesty International says the United Arab Emirates has secretly armed rebel groups in Yemen with advanced weapons bought from the United States.

The rebel groups include the Giants, the Security Belt and Elite Forces that are trained and funded by the UAE.

US commanders say there’s no authorisation for the redirection of the arms.

UAE hasn’t commented on the investigation

Will the furore over the findings push the US Congress to force President Donald Trump’s administration to withdraw support to the Saudi-Emirati led coalition at war in Yemen?

New Mexico’s governor literally runs through walls in response to Trump’s border wall

For all of the various responses to Tuesday night’s State of the Union address by President Trump — including responses from Stacey Abrams, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Sen. Kamala Harris  — perhaps the greatest was delivered by New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Immediately after Trump’s speech concluded on Tuesday night, Grisham tweeted the following  video, which showed her taking Trump to task over his immigration stance and love of border walls by literally running through walls.

Amazing. And big props to Gov. Grisham for doing her own stunts.

The video appears to be a campaign commercial from her recent 2018 gubernatorial election. But Gov. Grisham did more on Tuesday to make her point than just pull a Kool-Aid man in a Twitter video.

SEE ALSO: Nancy Pelosi literally ‘claps back’ at Trump’s State of the Union

Grisham also ordered the withdrawal of most of the New Mexico National Guard troops stationed at the border, ordered National Guard troops from other states to return home, and reassigned remaining National Guard troops stationed in border counties to “assist with the ongoing humanitarian needs of communities there, who have seen large groups of families, women and children crossing over the border in the remote Antelope Wells area in recent months.”

In her statement, Gov. Grisham added:

“We will support our neighbors where the need for assistance is great, and we will offer a helping hand when we can to those vulnerable people who arrive at our border, but New Mexico will not take part in the president’s charade of border fear-mongering by misusing our diligent National Guard troops. We will deploy our men and women in uniform only where there is a need, and where their presence can make a genuine difference in ensuring public safety and an easing of the humanitarian concerns at our southern border.”

New Mexico shares 180 miles of the border between the United States in Mexico, more than California (140 miles), but less than Arizona (373 miles), and Texas (1,241 miles).

But while the state’s border may only be a small portion of the total, it’s clear Gov. Grisham wants to send a big message that has an even bigger impact.

Knicks, Lakers, Warriors Headline Forbes’ List of Most Valuable NBA Franchises

The New York Knicks have been terrible on the court, but it apparently hasn’t affected the bottom line.

According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, the Knicks lead the NBA with a $4 billion valuation:

Darren Rovell @darrenrovell

JUST IN: Forbes NBA Franchise Values

1. Knicks, $4 Billion
2. Lakers, $3.7 Billion
3. Warriors, $3.5 Billion
4. Bulls, $2.9 Billion
5. Celtics, $2.8 Billion
6. Nets, $2.3 Billion
7. Rockets, $2.2 Billiion
8. Clippers, $2.15 Billion
9. Mavs, $1.9 Billion
10. Heat, $1.7 Billion

New York owner James Dolan recently said there were “feelers” for offers on the team worth about $5 billion, per ESPN.

New York has the worst record in the league at 10-43, and it hasn’t had a winning record since 2012-13. The franchise has only won a single playoff series since 2000, but playing in a major market has kept its value high.

The same could be said about the Los Angeles Lakers, who are ranked No. 2 with a $3.7 billion valuation even though they’ve gone five years without a playoff appearance.

The Golden State Warriors, worth $3.5 billion, have at least used on-court success to grow their brand with three titles in the last four years.

Trump nominates US Treasury’s David Malpass to lead World Bank

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the World Bank Group should be led by US Treasury official David Malpass, a Trump loyalist and critic of multilateral institutions who has vowed to pursue “pro-growth” reforms at the global lender.

Malpass, the undersecretary for international affairs at the Treasury Department and recently involved in the US-China trade negotiations, has been a sharp critic of the World Bank, especially over its lending to China.

He would succeed Jim Yong Kim, who announced in January he is stepping down three years before his term was set to expire amid differences with the Trump administration over climate change and development resources.

The departure of Kim, who was first nominated by former US President Barack Obama in 2012, is likely to become a contentious fight between the Trump administration and other countries who believe the United States exerts too much influence over the bank, which is based in Washington, DC.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Malpass had accepted Trump’s offer to lead the bank. A source close to Malpass said his priorities would be raising incomes in developing nations and defending US interests.

Critic of lending to China

Over the past two years, Malpass has pushed for the World Bank to halt lending to China, which he says is too wealthy for such aid, especially when Beijing has subjected some developing countries including Sri Lanka and Pakistan to crushing debt loads with its “Belt and Road” infrastructure development programme. China is the World Bank’s third-largest shareholder after Japan.

At a 2017 forum sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relation, Malpass singled out China as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the World Bank.

“Well, China has plenty of resources,” he said at the time. “And it doesn’t make sense to have money borrowed in the US, using the US government guarantee, going into lending in China for a country that’s got other resources and access to capital markets.”

Asked during the forum if he has discussed his concerns with “Dr Kim’s bank”, he said he was met with “a lot” of resistance. “But we’re having a good dialogue with them,” he said.

Last year, Malpass helped negotiate a package of World Bank lending reforms tied to a $13bn capital increase that aimed to limit the bank’s lending and focus resources more on poorer countries.

The reforms seek to “graduate” countries to private-sector lending and limit World Bank staff salary growth.

Trump’s nomination of Malpass is subject to a vote by the World Bank’s executive board and could draw challengers from some of the bank’s 188 other shareholding countries.

The United States, the lender’s largest shareholder with 16 percent of its voting power, has traditionally chosen the bank’s president, but departing president Jim Yong Kim faced challengers from Colombia and Nigeria in 2012.

In Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, It’s Too Easy to Forget Ted Bundy Was a Monster

Courtesy of Sundance Institute

By Monica Castillo

Decades after his death in the electric chair, Ted Bundy’s name still elicits a strong reaction. Because of renewed debate over Bundy’s looks and the trailer release of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile — the new movie headed to Netflix in the fall starring a very charming Zac Efron as the infamous serial killer — these feelings have risen back to the surface.

The movie, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, earned plenty of attention for its casting choice and the way it approached its subject. Extremely Wicked tries to understand how Bundy was able to commit so many atrocities, across so many state lines, and get away with it all for so long. Joe Berlinger’s film posits that Bundy’s good looks and charming personality had something to do with it. Bundy was allegedly a figure so persuasive, that when the judge sentenced him to death (and gave the movie its distinct title), he said that he wished the killer would have stayed in law school so he could practice in his courtroom. That’s not a statement said in court often. Or ever.

George Pimentel/Getty Images

‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile and Evil’ star Zac Efron at the film’s Sundance premiere

The movie jumps back in time to get a glimpse of how Bundy became one of the most notorious serial killers in America, but it only manages to do so half-heartedly. Much of the first half of the movie is not from Bundy’s perspective, but that of his longtime girlfriend, Liz Kloepfer (Lily Collins), and the story begins when she confronts him for the last time before his execution.

As the movie goes on, the story fractures, shifting the focus on Bundy during his many stints in jail. While it seems like the natural course for the movie to follow, focusing on Bundy instead weakens a potentially compelling narrative we haven’t heard before. Kloepfer may not have been the attention-grabbing marquee name, but her story of survival is perhaps the narrative that deserves more screen time. The movie often shows how Bundy would try to cover his tracks, manipulate those around him, and gaslight Kloepfer into believing that he was the real victim getting framed by the police. Hers is a horror story of an abusive relationship, but in trying to meld her perspective with Bundy’s, the movie makes the two points of view into an unholy match.

Efron is easily more charismatic and charming than the real Bundy, who finally shows up at the end of the film. Berlinger, who also directed the Netflix docu-series Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, unearths some of Bundy’s most notorious moments in court and faithfully recreates them for his version of events. Yet, in trying to retrace Bundy’s relationship from his side of the story, the movie gives Efron-as-Ted a romantic sheen as he woos Kloepfer, obsessively writes her letters, and calls her incessantly to insist he’s innocent. However, that behavior isn’t romantic; it’s psychologically damaging. The audience sees only a fraction of the toll it takes on her and how his case may have affected her life.

The film also details how Bundy later moved on to a new partner, Carole Anne Boone (Kaya Scodelario), while he was in jail. Boone, an old acquaintance-turned-lover, was far from the only woman coming to Bundy’s trial to show support and affection toward the sociopath. Unlike the amount of time given to Kloepfer’s story, there’s very little in the movie to explain how Boone’s obsession with Bundy began, even though she would bear him a child while he waited in a Florida prison for his execution. That phenomenon of women falling for dangerous men isn’t unique to the Bundy case, but it certainly was a part of his legacy.

George Pimentel/Getty Images

(Left to right) Joe Berlinger, Lily Collins, and Zac Efron attend the ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile’ premiere

In fact, the appeal of the “charming serial killer” can be found on another Netflix acquisition, You. After a quiet debut on Lifetime, the show — starring Penn Badgley as a problematic stalker, murderer, and love interest — has become a streaming hit on social media since debuting on the service in late December. There are a number of theories over the years to explain the appeal of a forbidden crush on murderers or why the public is so fascinated by serial killers. If anything, Bundy’s case renewed the public’s curiosity in mass murderers like himself and gave a new twist to the old story of a killer on the loose: his so-called good looks, normalcy, and intelligence. The media coverage at the time so often remarked on Bundy’s apparent “charm,” that the legend has overshadowed the facts of his case. Likewise, Extremely Wicked‘s humanization of Bundy makes him seem like less of a monster despite his monstrous crimes.

Because Extremely Wicked tells Bundy’s saga from the perspective of his long term relationship, the details about his victims are hidden from Kloepfer and the audience for most of the movie. It isn’t until Florida’s case against Bundy that viewers get a better look at his less flattering side, which includes ghastly details about the terrible murders of two young Florida State University students and his attack on several of their sorority sisters while they slept.

Berlinger insists that Extremely Wicked does not glamorize Bundy’s actions, but the way the movie tries to understand Bundy’s double life with Kloepfer makes his character morally ambiguous until the end. And though it could be argued that omitting his actions means the movie doesn’t sexualize the violence against Bundy’s victims, putting his crimes aside for so long also allows the audience to see him first as a charming stranger before his darker impulses are revealed.

Right before the credits, Extremely Wicked tries to recenter the attention on Bundy’s known victims, as the 30 names appear on-screen in silence. Yet the scope of his damage against Kloepfer and the countless other women he terrorized is never given a chance to register the same way.

NFL to Investigate Antonio Brown Allegedly Shoving Woman in Domestic Dispute

Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Antonio Brown was accused of pushing a woman to the ground in January, according to a police report obtained by Andy Slater of 640 The Hurricane:

Andy Slater @AndySlater

SLATER SCOOP: Here’s the Antonio Brown incident report.

Brown allegedly pushed female with two hands, causing her to fall to the ground.

Details below. https://t.co/CzauY3NsgX

The woman said she hurt her wrist and suffered a scrape from the push.

NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy told Pro Football Talk via email that the NFL will review the matter.

No arrests were made following the altercation. Brown’s lawyer, Darren Heitner, offered a statement Wednesday saying that his client “did absolutely nothing wrong,” per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler:

Jeremy Fowler @JFowlerESPN

A follow-up statement from Antonio Brown’s lawyer, Darren Heitner, in light of police report leaking. https://t.co/njZGeH0VoO

Heitner also released a statement Tuesday after the allegations were first publicized.

“The allegations are baseless and false,” he said, per Fowler. “It’s unfortunate that the media is trying to use distractions like this and prior stories in an effort to tarnish my client’s name and reputation. We have no further comment.”

According to TMZ Sports, the woman in question has a child with Brown and did not want to press charges after initially going to the police. She apparently “wished to cancel her report” and the police report says she refused to fill out a victim affidavit.

The Hollywood (Florida) Police Department had no comment on the situation besides noting that no arrests were made, per Fowler.

This might not matter with the NFL looking into the dispute. Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was suspended for six games without an arrest because the league determined he violated the league’s personal conduct policy. The NFL hasn’t yet made a decision on former Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, but he could face an even longer suspension after a video was released of him shoving and kicking a woman.

Brown is a seven-time Pro Bowler for the Steelers, but he was already seemingly on his way out of town after a reported dispute with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger that led to him missing his team’s Week 17 game, per Gerry Dulac and Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

He will likely be part of trade talks this offseason, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
