Woj: Anthony Davis Expected to Get Minute Reduction Amid Trade Rumors

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - FEBRUARY 04: Anthony Davis #23 of the New Orleans Pelicans stands on the court during the second half of a game against the Indiana Pacers at the Smoothie King Center on February 04, 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After keeping him through the NBA trade deadline, the New Orleans Pelicans plan to manage Anthony Davis’ workload over the remainder of the season.

According to ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pelicans will bring his minutes down from his current average of 37 per game, and they’ll potentially refrain from using him in both games of a back-to-back.

The Lakers made a major push to acquire Davis before Thursday’s deadline expired. The Los Angeles Times Broderick Turner reported Tuesday that they had put Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Ivica Zubac, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and two first-round picks on the table.

However, New Orleans gave the Lakers the silent treatment, leading some to wonder whether the Pelicans had an ulterior motive:

Rachel Nichols @Rachel__Nichols

So I asked @WindhorstESPN if the Pels ever intended to seriously engage with LA on Anthony Davis, or if all the talks & leaks were instead designed to sabotage the young Lakers as revenge for what N.O. sees as tampering, & he said “it’s not just possible, it’s what happened.” 👀 https://t.co/wki2hDPaEs

Now, Davis is locked in for the remainder of the year.

Some might argue the Pelicans should shut down the six-time All-Star. New Orleans isn’t going to reach the playoffs with him, so it might as well keep him healthy before returning to trade negotiations in the summer.

Pelicans general manager Dell Demps released a statement Thursday indicating that wasn’t going to be an option:

New Orleans Pelicans @PelicansNBA

https://t.co/lMUKOV0nFi

Davis has missed the Pelicans’ last nine games after suffering a finger injury in January. Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reported he was healthy enough to play in Monday’s 109-107 defeat to the Indiana Pacers, but New Orleans held him out of the lineup.

He’s under contract through the 2019-20 season at a little over $27 million. He also has a player option for the 2020-21 season at around $29 million.

Fans Have Already Picked The Sleeper Hit Of Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next

Mike Coppola/Getty Images for Billboard

Ariana Grande is capitalizing on her dominating run of the last few months with the release of her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next, today (February 8). As fans pore over the LP and post their reactions to social media, many have decided that “NASA” is the sleeper hit destined to become her next problematic relationship anthem.

“NASA” covers that feeling of having spent too much time with a significant other. Grande sounds slightly annoyed on the tune, singing, “I can’t really miss you if I’m with you / And when I miss you, it’ll change the way I kiss you” on the chorus. Everyone’s familiar with a dull headache that comes from seeing that special someone a little too much. She replicates that simmering anger and anxiety on the feathery tune, showing fans that she, too, gets tired of staring at a lover’s head. On Twitter, fans voiced their appreciation of the bop.

Fans weren’t the only ones gifting the song praise. It appears that NASA itself is feeling the record. The administration tweeted a response to being name-dropped earlier this morning. “Hey @ArianaGrande, we saw ‘NASA’ trending this morning and thought it was about one of our new discoveries. But we realized that you might need some space,” the tweet reads. We now stan an aeronautics administration.

Thank U, Next features “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored, “7 Rings,” and of course, the title track. To hear her perform her latest batch of relationship tunes as well as the crop from last year’s Sweetener, catch her on tour when it kicks off in March.

Stream the entire new album below.

Look at this colossal storm on Uranus

Uranus, a huge gaseous world some 1.8 billion miles from the sun, is quite stormy.

NASA’s long-lived Hubble telescope spotted a notable storm churning inside the planet’s blue-green atmosphere, and the space agency posted the image online Thursday.

The entirety of Uranus’ north pole is engulfed by a “vast bright stormy cloud cap,” wrote NASA.

“Scientists believe this new feature is a result of Uranus’ unique rotation,” added NASA, noting that, unlike the other planets in our solar system, Uranus is tipped on its side. This leaves the sun shining non-stop onto its north pole during its long summer, likely resulting in widespread atmospheric changes.

Just beneath the massive polar storm is a smaller, compact white cloud made of the common gas methane, notes NASA.

The space agency also spotted a new storm brewing on Neptune. It’s the dark spot near the top of the planet and is somewhat mysterious, as these massive dark storms have been observed appearing and then vanishing relatively quickly.

“The feature is the fourth and latest mysterious dark vortex captured by Hubble since 1993,” said NASA.

NASA plans to continue monitoring weather on these frigid, far-off gas giants to better understand the extraterrestrial storms.

“Just as meteorologists cannot predict the weather on Earth by studying a few snapshots, astronomers cannot track atmospheric trends on solar system planets without regularly repeated observations,” the space agency wrote.

“Astronomers hope that Hubble’s long-term monitoring of the outer planets will help them unravel the mysteries that still persist about these faraway worlds.”

Can Embattled No. 1 Pick Markelle Fultz Save His Career in Orlando?

PHILADELPHIA, PA - NOVEMBER 23: Markelle Fultz #20 of the Philadelphia 76ers watches the game from the bench against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Wells Fargo Center on November 23, 2018 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ORLANDO — Who says the Magic aren’t risk-takers?

It’s usually alien-like length that catches the eyes of President Jeff Weltman and general manager John Hammond. This time, the two are trying their luck at unearthing star power in the almost forgotten collegiate scoring machine Markelle Fultz.

“Markelle Fultz was the No. 1 pick in the draft two years ago,” Weltman said. “It wasn’t a fluke. The whole league had him there.”

Magic fans have been more than patient in awaiting their star point guard. After shipping out Elfrid Payton at the deadline last season, Orlando passed on opportunities to pick up Isaiah Thomas, Seth Curry, Shabazz Napier and Tim Frazier, as well as draft or deal for fellow 2017 draftmates Dennis Smith Jr. and Frank Ntilikina.

They gazed longingly at Trae Young from afar, only to see Atlanta ask him to dance first in a deal facilitated by Dallas for Luka Doncic.

Though the Magic only packaged an expiring wing shooting under 37 percent from the field (Jonathon Simmons), the Thunder’s 2020 first-round pick (top-20 protected) and the Cavaliers’ 2019 second-round pick, the move doesn’t come without risk.

“Stan [Van Gundy] used to say when you start trading away pretty good players, a lot of times you can make yourself a lot worse,” head coach Steve Clifford said. “And I think that happens a lot at trade deadlines. You watch a guy, and there’s something about him you don’t like, and you trade him. And then you say, ‘Oh s–t.’ A lot of times, the best trades are the ones you never make.”

Picks like the one the Magic just gave away (via OKC) turned into several intriguing prospects in the 2018 draft.

Nos. 21-23? Grayson Allen, Chandler Hutchison and Aaron Holiday, with Josh Okogie going one pick sooner at No. 20.

The 76ers are the clearest indication of what expectation can do to a young player like Fultz. After all, it was just over a year-and-a-half ago that he was perceived as the brightest star in a draft class made up of Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, De’Aaron Fox, Lonzo Ball, Jonathan Isaac, Lauri Markkanen and Kyle Kuzma.

The 76ers invested a lot in the young scoring guard, combining their third overall pick (which became Tatum) with a future first-rounder and end up walking away with what amounts to two early second-round picks.

In the past year, fans watched more footage of head-scratching shooting drills and universally mocked free-throw attempts than meaningful basketball minutes.

Fultz and shooting coach Drew Hanlen also discontinued their relationship.

Alex Kennedy @AlexKennedyNBA

Markelle Fultz and Drew Hanlen are no longer working together or on speaking terms, according to league sources. No word on why the two parted ways, but their relationship deteriorated about three weeks ago. Prior to this falling out, Fultz spent the summer training with Hanlen.

“Honestly, I don’t know where to start,” one NBA executive told Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report in October 2017. “This is mind-boggling. Who in the world told him to do anything like that? In college, he just shot 65 percent [on free throws]. It needed minor adjustments. This new thing is crazy, and a few weeks ago, he had an entirely different technique. Why change every time for the worse?”

On his podcast, JJ Redick lamented the lost opportunity for Fultz to grow and said the following at a media-attended shootaround in February 2018: “The kid’s f–king 19, man. Holy s–t. Y’all are sick.”

Fultz has since been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome (an injury that affects the shoulder). President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman feels the Magic are uniquely suited to manage the situation, and he preached patience several times Thursday.

“As for the timetable, we’re going to do it right; we’re not going to do it fast,” Weltman said. “It’s our job organizationally to put him in a position to succeed. However long that takes, that’s how long it’ll take.”

Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA

Source: Orlando will exercise patience with Markelle Fultz’s return to play. The Magic are taking the long-view with Fultz potentially being the starting guard to pair with the rest of their young core. Don’t be surprised if Fultz doesn’t return to play this season.

Greener pastures could still be ahead for Fultz, who finds himself outside of the northeastern spotlight in a quieter city with minimal expectations this season and beyond. The Orlando fanbase is more likely to be wearing Mickey ears than giant foam fingers.

Besides, Fultz doesn’t have to step in and command the offense overnight. That job belongs to D.J. Augustin, who still has one year remaining on his four-year contract and has performed above expectations this season.

Augustin has continued his deft touch from the perimeter, sinking 42.8 percent of his three-point attempts this season. His presence on the floor has been critical to the Magic, as he’s second to only All-Star Nikola Vucevic in plus/minus. Augustin pilots the misleading 26th-rated offense with aplomb, making the unit 10 points better per 100 possessions when he’s on the court (would be 12th in the NBA).

As effective as the offense has been with Augustin, Aaron Gordon and Vucevic on the floor, it’s been a five-car pileup once they sit.

They packaged two second-round picks to acquire Jerian Grant, who has been a disaster offensively, sinking the group’s second unit at a rate of 8.3 points per 100 possessions. His lack of playmaking skill has corresponded to the slowed development of Mo Bamba (who is now out with a stress fracture in his leg). When the two shared the court, the Magic were a wretch-inducing minus-13.6 per 100 possessions. Bleh!

The lack of playmaking in the second unit has resulted in some big-time collapses this season. In fact, the Magic have lost eight games when leading by 15 points or more, worst in the league.

Simmons even took the reins of signal-caller because of Grant’s struggles, but injuries and inconsistency torpedoed him in his contract season.

“Every time he [Simmons] starts getting back into a rhythm, he gets these four- or five-game things that have hurt him,” Clifford said. “Look at his range shooting. Last year he was 33 percent, and this year he hasn’t been able to shoot the ball well.”

Clifford knows the importance of taking a chance on a player like Fultz, but he also lamented moving on from Simmons: “It’s not like he hasn’t worked at it. He’s been in here. I think it’s difficult when you miss a whole offseason like that.”

However, the lack of one-on-one playmaking talent hasn’t gone unnoticed. When asked about the importance of superstar playmaking abilities like those of Russell Westbrook and Paul George, Clifford said, “You have to have ways to get to the ball and have guys who can make quick, simple plays to take advantage of it.”

He continued: “Would it be easier to have a guy you can just give the ball to? Absolutely. Or a superstar? Absolutely.”

Those playmaking traits are what made Fultz the No. 1 pick two years ago. At Washington, he averaged 23.2 points per game to lead all freshmen and did it on 47.6 percent shooting from the field and 41.3 percent from three.

Weltman said: “His skill level, his vision, his competitiveness—this guy has the whole package. In today’s NBA, to have a physical profile of Markelle Fultz is something that we’re all looking for. Those are the kind of guys that can dominate games these days.”

Scouts said the following of Fultz in August 2017, per Wasserman:

Scout No. 1: “Offensive skill set is very good. Able to get you a shot if need be late in the clock or early on, and he has creating ability that is undervalued.”

Scout No. 2: “He’s an underrated playmaker because his teammates at Washington didn’t finish a lot of his passes. Versatile enough to play off the ball, too. Reminds me of Dwyane Wade.”

Scout No. 3: “His environment will be crucial in his development, and it seems to me the Sixers are counting on a lot of question marks.”

This is what Magic fans will dream about. The Magic have drifted through mediocrity for six consecutive seasons without a playoff berth. With a mishmash of veteran talent and developing players, it’s hard to know just what direction they’re heading in.

John Denton @JohnDenton555

Something to keep in mind with @OrlandoMagic trading for 6-4, 200-pound PG Markelle Fultz — The @sixers run a motion offense with the fewest pick-and-roll plays in the NBA. Using his size & quickness, Fultz thrives in pick-and-roll plays. He’ll get more of those looks in ORL.

Fultz could answer that question. If he can realize even 75 percent of his potential and combine it with the endless rim protection and defense of Isaac, Gordon and Bamba, this “Core Four” could give the Magic one of the most interesting young groups in the NBA.

“I think he’s a 20-year-old player with tremendous potential, and I feel confident in saying the league looks at him that way, not just us,” Weltman gushed.

Fultz probably won’t create much noise in the Amway Center during the 2018-19 season, but forget this campaign. Orlando is the perfect place to provide him with the room and development he needs to realize his franchise-altering potential.

If Weltman, Clifford and Orlando can indeed practice patience and rediscover the player who once set the basketball world on fire, the Magic and Fultz may walk off into the sunset winners of one of the most surprising trades of 2019.

Jamal Khashoggi murder: No closure without body, says fiancee

Jamal Khashoggi‘s remains have not been found four months after his brutal murder and there is no grave for his loved ones to grieve and pray at, the Saudi dissident’s fiancee has said.

“It is important for us that the body is found, that we have a place at which his beloved ones could say prayers,” Hatice Cengiz said in Istanbul on Friday during the release of the book, Jamal Khashoggi: His Life, Struggles and Secrets.

The 228-page book, written by two Turkish journalists, is based on interviews with Cengiz, who described it as “emotional” as it portrays a side of Khashoggi seen by those closest to him.

Khashoggi was murdered by a team of Saudi operatives on October 2 last year inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where he had gone to collect documents to marry Cengiz.

After making numerous contradictory statements about Khashoggi’s fate, Riyadh said he had been killed and his body dismembered when negotiations to persuade him to return to Saudi Arabia failed.

The brutal killing, described by Turkish and US officials as an elaborate plot, has drawn an international outcry about press freedom and the Saudi government’s tactics to suppress criticism.

Cengiz said she is hopeful that his killers will be punished and has appealed to legislators in the European Union and the United States Congress to closely follow the case.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say that we would welcome in a very nice way in the event he (US President Donald Trump) takes a new stance regarding this subject,” she said.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) faces allegations of ordering the sensational killing, a charge that Saudi Arabia has consistently denied.

Khashoggi, a longtime royal insider who wrote for the Washington Post, was one of the best-known critics of the Saudi crown prince.

Cengiz said she believes that Saudi King Salman “has a conscience” and will support Turkey’s efforts to shed light on his killing.

Turkey, which is carrying out its own investigation into Khashoggi’s murder, has been frustrated by what Ankara says is a lack of cooperation by Riyadh.

‘Use a bullet’

On Thursday, a New York Times report said MBS had threatened to go after Khashoggi in 2017, and that the conversation was intercepted by US intelligence agencies.

The report claimed MBS told an aide that he would “use a bullet” against the journalist if he did not return home and end his criticism of the kingdom.

Cengiz’s comments also came a day after an independent United Nations human rights expert said authorities in Saudi Arabia quietly held a second court hearing for the 11 people facing charges over the killing.

Agnes Callamard, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, said she learned of the hearing during her first visit to Turkey last week to investigate the murder.

Callamard on Thursday said Saudi Arabia had undermined Turkey’s efforts to investigate the death, which she described as a “brutal and premeditated killing“.

“Khashoggi was the victim of a brutal and premeditated killing, planned and perpetrated by officials of the State of Saudi Arabia,” Callamard said in a preliminary report on Thursday.

Describing Callamard as “really sincere”, Cengiz added, “Regarding the UN, there hasn’t been any serious [investigation] work done on this subject so far but there’s more hope for the upcoming period.”

Whitaker tells lawmakers he won’t testify about conversations with Trump

Matthew Whitaker

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker arrives to appear before the House Judiciary Committee. | Andrew Harnik/AP Photo

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker will tell the House Judiciary Committee on Friday that he will not answer questions about his conversations with President Donald Trump, citing the possibility that the president would invoke executive privilege to shield the contents of those discussions.

“I want to assure you that I will seek to answer the Committee’s questions today, as best as I can, but I also must make clear that I will continue the longstanding Executive Branch policy and practice of not disclosing information that may be subject to executive privilege, such as the contents of deliberations or conversations with the President,” Whitaker will say, according to his prepared remarks.

Story Continued Below

Last month, Democrats sent Whitaker a list of questions mostly pertaining to his conversations with Trump about special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) gave Whitaker until Wednesday to inform the panel whether Trump planned to invoke executive privilege.

In his opening statement, Nadler highlighted Whitaker’s past statements that were critical of the Mueller probe, including his suggestion that the investigation be de-funded. Whitaker declined to recuse himself from overseeing the special counsel investigation, a decision Democrats have said they plan to examine.

“When career officials at the Department recommended that you take steps to mitigate your apparent conflicts of interest, Mr. Whitaker—when they told you that your public criticism of the special counsel was bad for the Department and bad for the administration of justice—you ignored them,” Nadler told Whitaker.

In his prepared statement, Whitaker explained that there “has been no change in the overall management of the special counsel investigation.”

“I have and will continue to manage this investigation in a manner that is consistent with the governing regulations,” he added.

Senior DOJ officials say that while Whitaker is technically the supervising leader of Mueller, both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Ed O’Callaghan, the principle associate deputy attorney general, have kept their same roles overseeing the Russia investigation that they had when former Attorney General Jeff Sessions led the Justice Department but had been recused from the probe because of his work with the Trump 2016 campaign.

Rosenstein plans to leave the Justice Department in about four to six weeks after William Barr’s Senate confirmation, per the attorney general’s request, according to a senior DOJ official with knowledge of Rosenstein’s plans.

On the Mueller probe, the special counsel appears to have been full steam ahead since the November change in DOJ leadership. He’s obtained a grand jury indictment against longtime Trump associate Roger Stone and pursued former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort for violating the terms of his guilty plea by lying to prosecutors.

On Thursday, the committee authorized Nadler to issue a subpoena if Whitaker either did not show up for the hearing or declined to answer certain questions. Whitaker said he would not appear Friday morning unless Nadler dropped his subpoena threat. Thursday night, Nadler said he would not issue the subpoena.

New ‘Child’s Play’ trailer marks Chucky’s creepy return

By Kellen Beck

Meek Mill And Drake Think It’s Cool To Crash Cars We Can’t Afford In ‘Going Bad’ Video

YouTube/Meek Mill

A lifetime ago, Meek Mill and Drake were each other’s sneering villains, taunting each other on wax and social media. Seeing them collide, literally and figuratively, in their new video for “Going Bad” can make you emotional, given everything that they have put each other through. The pair, along with video director Kid Art and countless rapper pals, have combined for one of the sleekiest visuals released this year thus far. Check it out below.

“Going Bad” is all about the feels it gives off. There’s a ton of powerful black faces in the music industry strolling through a luxurious pantheon, although there’s only one woman that appears in the video. Meek and Drake are in the center of the ruckus, of course, with the kind of suave, blank stares associated with being cooler than anyone else. Surrounding them are a number of are members of contemporary hip-hop’s brass – Nipsey Hussle, T.I., Swizz Beatz, and more – who match their stale faces in intensity. It’s never really revealed where exactly they are walking to, but it doesn’t matter. We’re all just really here to see the swaggering stroll, not necessarily where it leads.

The most visually striking part comes when Meek and Drake play chicken with expensive cars and they both lose. From the beginning, both rappers are revealed to be speeding in their respective cars to locations unknown. After Drake’s verse ends, we see what they’re doing – planning to drive full force into each other. Yikes. They collide in a mess of crumpled car metal and tire confetti before Meek begins his verse after a brief interlude, almost like this collision is a “passing the baton” moment. It could signal their inevitable reunion; they avoided each other for so long after beefing in 2015 that they are now back together, physically. Or maybe it’s just a CGI effect that Meek decided would look cool with the whole “boss” motif going on.

“Going Bad” appears on Meek’s 2018 album ChampionshipsHe’s released videos for “Intro” and “Trauma” since its release. This month, he’s embarking on a tour in support of the LP.

Opera browser to bring built-in VPN on Android

Opera’s bringing back its VPN (virtual private network) service, albeit in a slightly different format.

In 2016, the company launched a free VPN app for Android (followed by an iOS launch) but the app was discontinued last year. Soon, however, Opera will offer the free VPN service again, as part of its Opera browser for Android.

SEE ALSO: Facebook paid teens to install an app to spy on their internet and phone use

The feature is currently undergoing testing and is slowly rolling out to Opera beta users, the company said in a blog post Thursday.

Once you turn the option on, you can choose your virtual location — the choices aren’t as good as you’d get from a commercial VPN service, but you do get to choose whether you want to be virtually located in Europe, America or Asia. Opera claims it’s not keeping any usage logs.

VPNs are important tools for anyone concerned about their privacy. They obscure your internet activities from your internet service provider, and can sometimes be used to use services or access sites which are blocked in your country.

Opera already offers a free, unlimited VPN as part of its desktop web browser. Just like that version, the mobile browser also offers you to bypass VPN when accessing search engines.

Opera’s browsers for Android is freely available on Google Play
