Alliance of American Football 2019 Results: Week 1 Scores from Saturday

The inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football officially kicked off with a pair of games Saturday night.

The Week 1 slate got underway with a tilt between the Atlanta Legends and the Orlando Apollos as well as one featuring the San Diego Fleet and the San Antonio Commanders. Among the notable players who took the field were former NFLers Denard Robinson (Atlanta) and Jalin Marshall (Orlando).

Below is a look at the first-ever AAF action.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - FEBRUARY 09: Tyrone Holmes #58 of the San Antonio Commanders celebrates after sacking Mike Bercovici #11 of the San Diego Fleet during the first quarter in an Alliance of American Football game at the Alamodome on February 09, 2019 in

It was a night of firsts for the AAF, and a number of those historic moments came during the Fleet-Commanders tilt.

The San Antonio offense is responsible for the first play in AAF history, as quarterback Logan Woodside (a 2018 seventh-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals) connected with wideout Mekale McKay for a big gain:

Let’s get the party started. https://t.co/FusbYTNTHu

On San Diego’s first possession, Commanders linebacker Shaan Washington introduced himself to Fleet quarterback Mike Bercovici in jaw-dropping fashion:

The Alliance @TheAAF

What. A. Hit. 💥

@aafcommanders | #SDvsSA https://t.co/cZIyt91mTz

Perhaps the most notable part of that helmet-popping hit was that it did not draw a flag from the officials.

That sack set the tone for the first half, as the teams could only muster a pair of field goals apiece through the first two quarters.

While it was a defensive struggle for most of the first three quarters, Woodside put the Commanders on the doorstep with a 46-yard pass to Alonzo Moore on the final play of the third:

The Alliance @TheAAF

Woodside launches it to Moore! The @aafcommanders are in business.

#SDvsSA https://t.co/IYIufVfxBQ

That set the table for the game’s first touchdown:

CBS Sports @CBSSports

It’s the first touchdown in @aafcommanders history and it’s a big one. https://t.co/iJPs1BhJk8

The ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving San Antonio with a 12-6 lead.

After his team failed to find the end zone through the first 45 minutes, San Diego coach Mike Martz (led the then-St. Louis Rams to Super Bowl XXXIV title) opted to make a change under center, replacing Bercovici with Philip Nelson. That move did not make much of a difference, though.

San Antonio gained breathing room with a field goal later in the quarter. It was only fitting that a play by the Commanders defense helped put the game on ice:

CBS Sports @CBSSports

The biggest interception in @aafcommanders history!

What a play by Zack Sanchez! https://t.co/h0OYbyOtPk

That all but sealed the victory, as San Diego couldn’t score in the final moments.

Orlando Apollos 40, Atlanta Legends 6

Orlando got its inaugural campaign off to a strong start thanks to a balanced effort.

Like the San Antonio-San Diego matchup, this game was also responsible for some historic moments. Atlanta kicker Younghoe Koo (formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers) put a 38-yard field-goal attempt through the uprights just past the midway point of the first quarter for the first points in AAF history:

CBS Sports @CBSSports

Boom.

The first points in the history of @TheAAF belong to the @AafLegends. https://t.co/SJAyWiU40v

Unfortunately for the Legends, though, it would be nearly all Apollos for the rest of the first half.

Orlando got on the board in the opening minute of the second quarter, thanks to a replay reversal:

CBS Sports @CBSSports

“We’ve got a score.”

After some careful consideration, @aafAPOLLOS get the first touchdown in the history of @TheAAF. https://t.co/dCTBYvCEMF

The pass-and-catch from Garrett Gilbert (Texas) and Marshall (Ohio State) became the first touchdown in league history. That would not be the only time that duo connected on the night, though.

After a De’Veon Smith touchdown extended their lead to 13, the Apollos channeled their inner Philadelphia Eagles with a trick play near the goal line.

Orlando Apollos @aafAPOLLOS

The “Orlando Special” ‼

🏹#TakeAim | #ORLvsATL https://t.co/AiDcvILBF7

Just like that, Gilbert and Marshall each had recorded a passing and a receiving touchdown in the first half.

That scoring drive was aided by sound advice from Apollos coach Steve Spurrier:

CBS Sports @CBSSports

“Tell him to catch it this time.”

Some sound advice from Steve Spurrier. 😂 https://t.co/sNI09aadlW

And that’s why the Ol’ Ball Coach is in the College Football Hall of Fame.

While the other three teams managed just six first-half points apiece in their AAF debuts, Orlando’s offense proved it was more than ready to play.

The blowout continued into the fourth:

The Alliance @TheAAF

.@aafapollos are piling on the points! 🏹

#ATLvsORL https://t.co/lanDmmi1Zo

The defense even got in on the action with a pick-six.

Gilbert led his team to victory by completing 15 of 25 pass attempts for 227 yards and three total touchdowns, per Apollos reporter Tom Alexander

What’s Next

Week 1 of the Alliance of American Football schedule continues Sunday, as the Memphis Express and the Birmingham Iron will square off at 4 p.m. ET and the Arizona Hotshots will host the Salt Lake Stallions at 8 p.m. ET.

Celtics Blow 28-Point Lead, Lose to Clippers After Kyrie Irving’s Knee Injury

Adding insult to injury, the Boston Celtics blew a 28-point lead on their home floor as they dropped Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, 123-112.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, it marked the largest come-from-behind victory in Clippers history and was the team’s second 25-point comeback win this season.

Meanwhile, ESPN Stats and Info also noted that it was the sixth time in the last 20 seasons the Celtics have blown a 25-point lead and lost, twice as many as any other team during that span. That historic collapse certainly did not sit well with the TD Garden crowd:

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

Celtics got booed off the court at TD Garden after blowing 28-point lead vs. Clippers. https://t.co/bTnePzX6cw

After all, this was a game the Celtics appeared to have in hand from the start.

Boston jumped out to a 23-point lead in the opening 12 minutes after doubling up Los Angeles with 43 first-quarter points. The Celtics eventually grew their lead to 28 with just under five minutes to play in the first half.

Then, things went downhill.

Right after the Celtics grabbed their largest lead of the night, Irving came up limping while trying to defend a three-pointer. Not only did the shot go in, but the All-Star point guard also would exit the game moments later and would not return due to a right knee sprain.

Meanwhile, the Clippers started to chip away. They managed to cut the deficit down to 21 points by halftime, setting the tone for a big second half.

After allowing 74 points in the first half, Los Angeles held Boston to just 12 points in the third quarter. By the end of the period, the margin had been trimmed all the way down to five.

The Clippers completed the comeback and then some by outscoring the Celtics 42-26 over the final 12 minutes. Just like that, Boston saw a 28-point lead turn into an 11-point loss.

What makes this loss even more stunning is the fact it came just two days after Boston blew an 18-point lead to the Los Angeles Lakers on the same court.

As NBA on ESPN pointed out, this game featured a number of feats:

NBA on ESPN @ESPNNBA

The Clippers’ 28-point comeback W … 😮

– Largest comeback by any team on the road since 2009
– Biggest blown lead for the Celtics since 2003
– Clippers are the 1st team in the last 20 seasons with multiple 25-point comebacks in a season https://t.co/r2Ad0V8kyf

The Clippers had eight players in double figures, with Montrezl Harrell leading the way with 21. They shot 47.6 percent from the floor while draining 12 triples and went went 31-of-40 from the free-throw line.

On the other side, a balanced effort couldn’t lead Boston to victory. Seven players scored 10-plus points, and Gordon Hayward’s 19 were a team-high. The Celtics shot just 42.4 percent from the floor, including 9-of-26 from three-point range.

The Clippers improved to 31-26 on the season, opening up their lead on the eighth spot in the Western Conference to a full game over the Sacramento Kings. The Celtics dropped to 35-21 with the loss, falling a half-game behind the Philadelphia 76ers for fourth in the East.

Of course, the loss, as stunning as it may be, takes a backseat in Boston. All attention will be on Irving’s health moving forward.

Fiji Water is now countersuing the Fiji Water woman

Image: Stefanie Keenan / Contributor / Getty images

2017%252f09%252f18%252f2b%252fjackbw5.32076.jpg%252f90x90By Jack Morse

Let the lawsuits flow, like a gushing natural spring refusing to be bottled. That’s right, Fiji Water is countersuing the Fiji Water woman.

The virally famous Fiji Water woman, whose real name is Kelly Steinbach, gushed into the spotlight at the 2019 Golden Globes for her uncanny ability to photobomb celebs. But things took a turn for the weird when we learned she was suing Fiji Water. Well, it turns out the purveyor of overpriced H2O can dish it out, too.

SEE ALSO: Photobombing FIJI Water woman is suing FIJI Water and yes, you read that right

According to the lawsuit, which BuzzFeed News dug up, Fiji Water and its parent, The Wonderful Company, argue that Steinbach “reneged on the valid agreement between herself and FIJI to serve as a Fiji Water Brand Ambassador and permit FIJI to use her likeness in its related advertising campaign, and instead, attempted to extort close to half a million dollars from FIJI because she wanted a better deal than the original $90,000 she had originally accepted in exchange for such rights.”

In other words, Fiji claims that Steinbach saw which way the viral winds were blowing, and decided she was due a little extra compensation. Again, that’s Fiji Water’s take on things. Steinbach, of course, sees things a little differently: she claims she was “pressured” to “sign away her rights in the moniker ‘Fiji Water Girl’.”

Fiji’s countersuit doesn’t stop at allegations of extortion. The legal filing also takes a moment to, in effect, call Steinbach ungrateful.

“[The] irony is not lost on FIJI that Ms. Steinbach has now bitten the hand that feeds her by suing the very company that is entirely responsible for providing her the opportunity and the means to capitalize on her fleeting 15 minutes of internet fame.”

Which, ouch.

So what happens next? Well, if the parties can’t agree out of court then judgment is likely to be left for the Superior Court of California to decide.

Who would have thought viral fame could turn sour so quickly. Oh, wait
