Spanish nationalists call for Pedro Sanchez’ resignation

Madrid, Spain – Tens of thousands of Spaniards descended on Madrid to call for the end of the Socialist-led minority government and demanded that Catalan separatist leaders be put in prison.

The demonstration on Sunday, called by a coalition of three right-wing parties – the People’s Party (PP), Citizens and the VOX – draped Madrid’s Plaza De Colon in Spanish flags as protesters chanted slogans like “Long Live Spain!” and “Long Live the Police!”

The Spanish government estimated the number of demonstrators at 45,000, while organisers said 200,000 attended. Many held signs saying “Stop Sanchez”, a reference to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has overseen talks with Catalan separatists in recent months.

“Spain’s sovereignty isn’t a negotiation,” Marcos Villalobos, a student at Madrid’s Complutense University, told Al Jazeera at the protest. “We are one country.”

Many right-leaning Spaniards are alarmed by the willingness of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) to negotiate with Catalan nationalist parties on regional self-determination before the high-profile trial of 12 Catalan leaders accused of rebellion, embezzlement and disobedience in relation to Catalonia‘s failed 2017 independence bid.

#Spain does not put up with @sanchezcastejon and his government. #Sánchez is a traitor. #SanchezLargate #SanchezDimisionYa #SanchezIndecente #SanchezTraidorAEspaña #SanchezLargate10F #SanchezTraidorAEspañaDimison #EleccionesGeneralesYA #Eleccionesya #Yovoy #YoVoyPorEspaña pic.twitter.com/lm5TEzkfZb

🇪🇸Juancar 🇪🇸 (@Juancarfg) 10 febbraio 2019

Sanchez said he “respected” the demonstrators during a speech in the north of Spain, but said the PSOE-led government would continue supporting “coexistence, law and dialogue in Catalonia”.

PSOE holds 84 seats in Spain’s 350-seat Congress of Deputies, roughly half the number needed for a majority.

The centre-left party has a tenuous alliance with a left-wing coalition headed by Podemos that holds 67 seats, which means the group requires support from smaller Catalan and Basque nationalist parties.

Sanchez is currently trying to pass a national budget to prevent new elections. The two major Catalan nationalist parties, the Republican Left of Catalonia and the Catalan European Democratic Party, announced they would not vote for the budget this week.

As a result, Sanchez is now fighting to save his government.

As demonstrators sang pro-Spain songs in Plaza de Colon, Marta Feijoo, a pensioner from Galicia in Spain’s north, said Spain’s political situation wasn’t a matter of negotiations, but of law.

“The Catalan leaders broke the law. They have no respect for the Constitution. Politics isn’t about changing the law, but respecting it,” she said.

Sebastian Balfour, an emeritus professor of history at the London School of Economics who specialises in modern Spain, told Al Jazeera that Catalan nationalist parties have never held such sway over the national government.

“The situation is unprecedented,” Balfour said.

Spain’s Supreme Court starts its trial on Tuesday for the 12 leaders of the Catalan separatists.

‘SNL’ pays tribute to the ‘Women of Congress’ and pantsuits

After a midterm election which brought a record number of women to Congress, some Congresswomen are being treated like celebrities.

Saturday Night Live knows this fanbase well. This sketch from the Feb. 9 episode imagines the newly elected women of Congress as Charlie’s Angels dressed in white (the traditional color of women’s suffragists).

There’s Kate McKinnon as Nancy “Madame Clap back” Pelosi and Leslie Jones as Maxine “Don’t Go Chasing” Waters.

This is the kind of hardcore Pantsuit Nation feminism we can all get behind.

Egypt’s Sisi takes over as new head of African Union

Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is expected to focus on fighting armed groups operating in Africa [Tiksa Negeri/Reuters]
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is expected to focus on fighting armed groups operating in Africa [Tiksa Negeri/Reuters]

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took over as chair of the African Union (AU) following a meeting by heads of state from the continent in Ethiopia’s capital on Sunday.

The post rotates annually between the five regions of the continent.

The Egyptian leader is expected to focus on the fight against armed groups on the continent and rebuilding efforts of countries recovering from conflict.

“Terrorism remains a cancer that affects African nations and steals the dreams of our people and we must identify and combat those who fund terrorism activities on the continent,” Sisi said in a speech to the AU assembly shortly after his appointment.

Under Egypt‘s leadership the bloc will prioritise mediation and “preventive diplomacy” as one of the key mechanisms for promoting peace and security on the continent, he added.

Sisi takes the helm from Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who focused on creating an Africa wide free-trade zone during his tenure.

“There is no doubt that you (Sisi) will take our union forward decisively to new and greater heights,” the Rwandan leader said as he handed over to Egypt’s president.

In recent years, Cairo has had a frosty relationship with the African Union.

Egypt was kicked out of the 55-member state pan-African body in 2013 following a Sisi-led military coup.

The coup resulted in the overthrew of the country’s democratically elected leader, Mohamed Morsi, and brought Sisi to power. The bloc later lifted Egypt’s suspension.

‘Shocking contempt’

Meanwhile, Amnesty International expressed concern that Sisi’s leadership of the bloc could harm the continent’s human rights record.

“During his time in power, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has demonstrated a shocking contempt for human rights. Under his leadership the country has undergone a catastrophic decline in rights and freedoms,” said Najia Bounaim, Amnesty’s North Africa campaign director.

“There are real fears about the potential impact his chairmanship could have on the independence of regional human rights mechanisms and their future engagement with civil society,” Bounaim added.

It is the first time since the AU was founded in 2002 that Egypt assumes the top seat of the body.

White confusion over blackface is the punchline in this ‘SNL’ sketch

Saturday Night Live turned its attention to Virginia on Feb. 9, the first episode since controversy gripped the state.

It’s been a tough time for Virginia and its duly elected leaders. The state’s Democratic governor, Democratic attorney general, and top Republican in the state Senate have all admitted to wearing blackface at some point in their lives.

(Technically, Governor Ralph Northam claims he didn’t do it, and that he wasn’t in an offensive photo on his own college yearbook page featuring one man in blackface and another in Ku Klux Klan robes. Northam’s lieutenant governor, Justin Fairfax, is also facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and may soon be forced out of office. Virginia’s kind of a mess right now.)

Back to the sketch: Kenan Thompson is a state ethics officer looking to find any other blackface controversies-in-the-making. The all-white room of state officials he’s meeting with isn’t just 100% guilty; they also parrot the worst examples of white justification for wearing blackface (it’s never OK, folks).

‘SNL’ cold open drags CNN and America’s obsession with Jeff Bezos

By Adam Rosenberg

Is all of America really that obsessed with Jeff Bezos dick pics? Or is it just CNN?

The latest Saturday Night Live cold open visited the cable network’s Meet The Press stage, where host Chuck Todd (Kyle Mooney) banters with guests about the size, shape, and “coloration” of Bezos’ member.
